Hi!

While working on the "reproducible builds" effort [1], we have noticed
that debootstrap could not be built reproducibly.
The devices.tar.gz tarball contains devices in unsorted (readdir) order.

The attached patch fixes this by telling tar to sort the archive
members.

Regards,
 Reiner

Package: pbuilder
Version: 0.199+nmu1
Severity: wishlist

My situation is that I'm trying to build some packages for Debian unstable, on
an Ubuntu system, using cowbuilder

To create base.cow image, I first tried,

$ sudo cowbuilder --create --distribution unstable --mirror
http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/
 [...]
E: Release signed by unknown key (key id AED4B06F473041FA)

Guessing that I was missing the debian-archive-keyring package, I installed it
and tried again, with same result. I double checked that the
debian-archive-keyring package includes key id AED4B06F473041FA

By studying the debootstrap manpage I learned that, "By default, Release file
signatures are not checked". I used the cowbuilder "--debug" option to find the
"--keyring" option passed to debootstrap, and configured in
/usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc

Next I tried to omit the debootstrap "--keyring" option using the cowbuilder
"--debootstrapopts" option, without success - it's apparently appended to value
from /usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc, in pbuilder-checkparams

Next I tried to omit the debootstrap "--keyring" option using a ~/.pbuilderrc
file,

 DEBOOTSTRAPOPTS=--variant=buildd

This failed because sudo resets the environment ($HOME),

 W: /root/.pbuilderrc does not exist

Next I tried,

$ sudo sh -c "HOME=$HOME cowbuilder --create --distribution unstable --mirror
http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/;
 [...]
E: Release signed by unknown key (key id AED4B06F473041FA)

This failed to omit the "--keyring" option. My bash knowledge isn't strong -
maybe it's possible to have two variables with same name, one a scalar and one
a "list"? I tried,

 DEBOOTSTRAP=(--variant=buildd)

This worked! It omitted the "--keyring" option and the base.cow image built
successfully. However it's prohibitively difficult to figure out

If the "--debootstrapopts" option overrode DEBOOTSTRAPOPTS in
/usr/share/pbuilder/pbuilderrc, then it would be little easier to figure out.
If installing debian-archive-keyring was all that was required, I'd be done
after my first guess - maybe debootstrap could look in both keyrings? or in
some merged keyring? I dunno...

As I write this I found Ubuntu bug,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pbuilder/+bug/599695. Unfortunately I
didn't check the Ubuntu bug tracker before trying to debug my issue - I did
check the Debian bug tracker but didn't find my issue mentioned

Does ubuntu even run https mirrors? A pointer to official documentation

Apologies; I had been intending to commit the removal myself after the
openrd testers got back to me, but testing took much longer than
expected, and I neglected to follow-up with the removals needed for d-i.

I'll make sure with future removals to CC debian-boot if it's one of the
targets currently supported in d-i, even if I plan to make the commits
myself.

available at http://wiki.debian.org/ReleaseGoals/RunDirectory
Basically, it's now in both testing and unstable, and the next
phase of the transition is to migrate all users of /lib/init/rw
over to /run and then remove /lib/init/rw entirely for wheezy
(as soon as this transition is complete).

Your package is one of the users of sendsigs.omit.d listed here:
http://wiki.debian.org/ReleaseGoals/RunDirectory#Packages_using_.2BAC8-lib.2BAC8-init.2BAC8-rw

Recommendations for how to do the transition may be found here:
http://wiki.debian.org/ReleaseGoals/RunDirectory#How_to_transition_from_.2BAC8-lib.2BAC8-init.2BAC8-rw_to_.2BAC8-run.3F

For transitioning from /lib/init/rw to /run, we would recommend that
you:

* Depend on initscripts (>= 2.88dsf-13.3)
* Replace all usage of /lib/init/rw with /run
* Move all files in /lib/init/rw to /run in the package postinst

I think a similar issue has been picked up in Ubuntu -

When debootstrap can't extract devices.tar.gz for some reason, it exists
with an error code 2, but doesn't say anything as to why it failed.

Following with strace, it appears the one failing is tar, because it can't
extract (mknod) the devices from devices.tar.gz. This happened on my system
because I was trying to debootstrap from within an lxc instance created
with the default template which disabled a whole bunch of devices.

Please at least handle the error and display tar's error message.

A bonus point if you just ignore the error, as the failing devices here were
really not important to the chroot:
dev/full
dev/kmem
dev/loop*
dev/mem
dev/port
dev/ram*

Mike

debootstrap on sid seems to do weird things when unpacking devices.tgz
on sid.

You can find the used call and everything around it at [0].

When running this script on jessie, dev/ inside the chroot contains
everything from debootstrap's devices.tgz afterwards.

When running on jessie, it contains only parts of it - the most
interesting thing is that, on sid, dev/ptmx becomes a symlink to
pts/ptmx, although it is not a symlink in devices.tgz. Everything apart
from that seems to be compeltely random - e.g., sometimes dev/null and
dev/console are missing, and sometimes not.

This looks a bit related to #601011, but in this case, debootstrap
doesn't even exit with failure, it just goes on and what's in dev/
afterwards is completely random.

I fail to see how this would solve the problem in #843073, unless your
plan is to move away all files from /lib and its subdirectories which
would seem quite problematic to achieve, especially given the short time
until the full freeze.

Bug#844221: Debian Installer Stretch Alpha 8 release

I think this bug report would better be retitled "please drop the
non-usr-merged option" (and severity lowered to wishlist).

The real issue (in #843073) still exists and affects the archive as long
as a /single/ uploader has an usrmerged system. What the default is in
debootstrap is completely besides the point.

> Control: affects -1 dpkg-dev
> Control: severity 843073 wishlist
[...]

(As already mentioned above anything in debootstrap doesn't make the
843073 bug less severe. Downgrading that is a mistake in my view.)

The issue being discussed is only affecting non-usr-merged systems. I
think the real underlying problem here was making merged-usr vs
non-merged-usr an option. It seems everyone is reluctant to spending
time on the non-usr-merged path of things (which has no real reason to
exist at all except trying to avoid having opinionated discussions about
usrmerge). Simply dropping it and also making installing the usrmerge
package a requirement when upgrading to stretch would solve all issues
and hopefully save us all alot of time.
(If we need a random essential package to depend on the usrmerge package
to handle the upgrade path in stretch I can volunteer to add the
dependency in util-linux which is essential. We should likely also
document in the release notes that installing usrmerge as a pre-upgrade
step would be recommended.)

Andreas Henriksson

   * Add disk label type to device directory, such that
e.g. partman-partitioning can elect dasd partitioning table for dasd
 drives.
 .
   [ Dimitri John Ledkov ]
   * On s390[x], prevent using extended partitions on DASD drives that can
only hold 3 partitions. Parted doesn't have special knowledge about
that and claims that msdos partition table on DASD drives can hold
the usual maximum number of partitions types.

Ok fine, this looks pretty worse than it looked before. So I'm rearranging
the bugs to where they belong.

Right. I'm happy to assist people who want to fix this to try to find
a proper solution in dpkg-dev, but I'm not planning on spending time
on this on my own.

Err, well exactly because usemerge is a major hack, and I'm actually
surprised we are deploying systems by default with that. As an
interesting thing to install and try out on ones system that's
perfectly fine though. But IMO if the merge needs to be done it should
be done by installing things into their final desired destination on
each package. Of course that makes split installations not possible,
but oh well.

Package: base-installer
Version: 1.145

While reading through the code to figure out the format of the values
expected for "base-installer/debootstrap_script", I noticed that the
code in base-installer prepends "/usr/share/debootstrap/scripts" when it
checks this value, so I assumed the expected format must be something
like "sid". When something like "sid" is sent, base-installer doesn't
complain, but debootstrap fatal errors because it can't find the script.
When something like "/usr/share/debootstrap/scripts/sid" is given,
base-installer throws a warning (which I can't figure out why it's a
warning and not an error, since the code uses the "error" helper), but
debootstrap is happy and the install continues successfully.

I've attached a patch that makes either of these values work as expected
by prepending "/usr/share/debootstrap/scripts" if the given value exists
within that directory, and only throwing a warning if the value given
either isn't an absolute path that exists or isn't inside the
debootstrap scripts directory.

My proposed d/changelog update is as follows:

  [ Tianon Gravi ]
  * Fix warning given for absolute path "debootstrap_script" values.
  * Update "debootstrap_script" logic to allow bareword script names
like "sid" as well as absolute paths.

Of course, I'm open to tweaking any aspect of this, especially to better
fit the expected contribution style or scripting preferences. :)

♥,
- Tianon

Version: 1.152
Severity: critical
Tags: d-i l10n
Justification: breaks the whole system

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where
appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

I ran "apt-get dist-upgrade" to upgrade to testing repository.
I ran "apt-get dist-upgrade" after "su" ing to the superuser.
I am afraid that somehow LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 setting seeped into the
 environment.
In that environment, during the execution of
console-setup, "iconv" failed due to illegal or invalid character
code or something like that. I am afraid that I failed to log the
operation successfully and so can't recall the exact message, but
the failure is due to "iconv", this is for sure.
I have experienced various "iconv" issues before, and
thus I changed LANG to LANG=C after seeing the failure and
ran "apt-get install console-setup" again, and this time
it succeeded and so the "apt-get dist-upgrade" as a whole
succeeded!

On a different PC, I set LANG=C before running apt-get
dist-upgrade, and found that it ran successfully the first time.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Simply ran "apt-get dist-upgrade", and found console-setup failed
due to the failure of "iconv" that was invoked during its
execution.

But setting LANG=C before running apt-get was the cure to solve
 the problem.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

 Failure to run console-setup successfully.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
console-setup to run to completion successfully.
