Bug#849578: task-xfce-desktop: Why you use the vlc player in the task-xfce-desktop meta package?

2018-02-25 Thread Jürgen Göricke
Hello everyone,

because this bug report is still not closed, I would like to check the status
of this bug report after more than a year and after the release of Debian
Stretch.
When is it planned to replace the VLC Media Player with Xfce's own Media Player
Parole?
And no, the VLC player is not a good alternative, as mentioned above due to the
Qt dependencies and of course because this player often has security
vulnerabilities.
It is therefore advisable to replace the VLC Media Player with the Media Player
Parole.

Regards

Jürgen

Bug#891472: task-desktop should Recommend libu2f-udev

2018-02-25 Thread Nicolas Braud-Santoni
Package: task-desktop
Severity: normal
User: nico...@braud-santoni.eu
Usertags: u2f

Dear maintainer,

libu2f-udev ships udev rules that make sure U2F devices can be used by
unprivileged users; as those devices become more prevalent, we should make
sure they work by default.

In Debian stretch, mbiebl temporarily shipped a copy of those rules directly
in udev, but this was removed in buster (in version 237-2); it appears the most
sensible solution is to recommend this package in task-desktop and in
applications
that directly provide U2F functionality (i.e. without depending on libu2f-host).

Best,

At least this one needs serious regression testing. Meaning setting up

happens without and with this patch.

There is a description of sorts for UEFI and bios booting in [1] and in
the section on "The UEFI boot manager" it says "Linux distributions
contain a tool called efibootmgr which is used to manipulate the
configuration of the UEFI boot manager"

$ man efibootmgr

DESCRIPTION
...This application can create and destroy boot entries, change
the boot order, ... and more.
OPTIONS
   [...]
   -c | --create
Create new variable bootnum and add to bootorder
   [...]
   -L | --label LABEL
Boot manager display label (defaults to "Linux")

Debian Code Search for "efibootmgr" shows that grub2 code calls it and
uses the -c and -L options, among others.

I was not able to figure out how "Linux" is replaced by "debian" but it
looks like this is what is changing the boot order but I still don't
know *why* - any hints?

Why not applying the patches yourself and becoming the maintainer
of debootstrap for a while? I think it doesn't have any obvious
regular maintainer and it could benefit from a bit of sustained attention
to deal with the backlog of bugs.

I'm ccing the 4 uploaders of debootstrap, maybe they can give you
more guidance.

I suspect it's due to this kernel change:
https://sources.debian.org/src/linux-latest/90/debian/linux-image.NEWS/#L15
Can you check that?

debootstrap could perhaps warn about the need to enable vsyscalls for
old amd64 distributions. (Annoyingly, there's no easy way to detect
whether they are currently enabled.)

Ben.

Hi,

As I wrote a patch as

archived old debian releases just use http://archive.debian.org as

Not always. I'm continually doing installs, tweaking them in one way or
another. The last install is the one most likely to "crash and burn". I
solve the problem by having grub installed ONLY on first partition of my
ONLY hard disk. I'd love to see an os-prober which created menu entries
in partition number order.

Why not send a patch which adds this as a (perhaps only preseedable or
certainly very low priority) option then?

Because I don't have the skill set. That's why I took the brute force
approach.

You could also (I think) have grub installed by the installer to the
individual partitions and then have your primary grub installed in the
MBR configured to chain load to those.

I've seen chain loading mentioned, but never had need to understand it.
Time for some reading. Thank you.

Bug#798562: debootstrap: Support "scripts" sharing code with Debian but with different default_mirror and keyring

It is only in source package, all scripts files are put into same
/usr/share/debootstrap/scripts directory. It'd be nice to add another
distro to add scripts directory in the future. Not necessary but nice,
 IMO.

It would break current usage of debootstrap, so I would like to avoid it.

Thanks, it is also good for archived Debian releases like squeeze.

Not only repository, but also keyring is different as
 /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-removed-keyring.gpg.

Now squeeze is symlinked to sid, so just create new one with
squeeze is best. Here's a patch.

Why not send a patch which adds this as a (perhaps only preseedable or

individual partitions and then have your primary grub installed in the
MBR configured to chain load to those.
