And, as explained in private mail to Cyril, it would make sense to
have me.out of the d-i gid, given my lowered activity nowadays
(the swith to Salsa did ring the final bell, I think).

It also makes sense to drop my account from the installer team on
Salsa (or whatever it is called there) whihch will save me from commit
notifications...

Dropping me from Uploaders is also a good idea (I never found time to
do that while we were still on Alioth).

As I explained to several people already, this is part of /me
resigning from Debian one day or another, given that my priorities in
life have switched gradually.

I'll reamin subscribed to -boot so please feel free to ask for help
and advice, particularly in this D-I l10n world, which we started to
build about 15 years ago. (I think that my first commits to D-I
SVN (or was it CVS?) go back to 2003 or so)

Bug#900738: odroid-u3: as successful as one could expect

2018-06-03 Thread Vagrant Cascadian
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Pretty easy install for an armhf system.

Only complication is installing u-boot requires using the vendors signed
binaries(which can't be shipped in Debian), but the actual u-boot
binaries come from Debian.

live well,
  vagrant

Comments/Problems:

Requires using vendor's sd_fuse script in order to load the signed
binaries on the microSD, which then are used in conjunction with u-boot
From Debian. There's not much Debian could do about this, short of
reverse-engineering the signed trust binaries...

I also used the netboot images, but manually copied them to microSD, as
the network boot didn't work in u-boot.

Once installed, the boot scripts work fine.

Re: [l10n-sync] Updating sync script on git migration

2018-06-03 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

Holger Wansing (2018-06-03):
> Hmm, maybe the whole file is even better für reviewing.
> Here it is (gzipped for file size).

Danke für das ganze File. ;)

FWIW, I suppose you could have pushed a branch with a commit or two, but
I understand that you've already put efforts into that git transition
anyway. :)

Regarding your question for the duplicated line, there use to be the
concept of big commits and atomic commits, and simplifications of those
use cases over time led to a leftover “cd” call.

The rest looks good to me so I've committed this (amending a bit) and
pushed to git master:

https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/d-i/commit/cb0acca6990c60cd67aaac479372eadfa57f27e2

https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/d-i/commit/3bd7ecb355795262c7db8ea62c7c52c67c4e9e29

I think it would make sense to have you in the d-i gid, so that you can
access dillon, and re-enable crontab entries, maybe subscribing to cron
mails? Of course I could re-enable those crontab entries myself but I
won't be able to fix any possible fallouts in the upcoming days.

What do you think?

Package: installation-guide-amd64

Dear Maintainer,

While reading the installation manual trying to understand if I should use
/run or /var/run for temporary file creation, I run into the following page:

https://www.debian.org/releases/stretch/amd64/apcs02.html

There it says:

"Debian GNU/Linux adheres to the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard for directory
and file naming" and links to http://www.pathname.com/fhs/ as the reference
for such standard. This confused me because the previous debian page used
/run, but there was no reference to it on the external link.

It turns out that that is an old reference, and that the newer version of the
standard, 3.0, is now hosted at:

http://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/fhs.shtml

which correctly contains and documents /run.

Please update the above page and all references where a link to the old spec
is and change it to the new page of the Linux Foundation, or to the home page:

https://wiki.linuxfoundation.org/en/FHS

Thank you,

Dear maintainer,

your package installation-guide declares a relation onto
jadetex
which has been a transitional package for one and a half years
by now.

Please update your package dependencies to use the correct
texlive-formats-extra

We will remove `jadetex' in the near future, but will continue
providing it from texlive-formats-extra for some more time

Thanks for your cooperation

Package: debian-installer-manual

Section B.2.2 (Using boot parameters to supplement preseeding) notes
that current kernels can accept a maximum of 32 command line options,
but says nothing about a maximum number of characters on the kernel
command line.

There appears to be a 255 character maximum for parameters, after
which the kernel command line is silently truncated. I have no idea
if this is a limitation of the kernel, or of grub, but it should
probably be noted along with the 32 parameter limit.

While I'm translating installation manual via PO file, I found following
behavior of xmlpo. in manual/en/welcome/doc-organization.xml:

 describes booting into the
installation system. This chapter also discusses troubleshooting
procedures in case you have problems with this step.

is converted to the following PO entry:

#. Tag: para
#: welcome.xml:436
#, no-c-format
msgid ""
"describes booting into the installation system. This chapter also
discusses "
"troubleshooting procedures in case you have problems with this step."

It assumes the entity is the very first of the sentence. But this is
not true in some languages and cultures.

For my case (Korean), a chapter (or a document) is never an active thing
and it's very weird when a chapter became a sentence's subject. "The
chapter describe something..." should be translated like "In the
chapter, you can read something..." in Korean.

On (for example)
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.arm64/index.html
the installation guide has warning messages like

"Although this installation guide for amd64 is mostly up-to-date,
we plan to make some changes and reorganize parts of the manual
after the official release of buster."

or

"This installation guide is based on an earlier manual written for the
old Debian installation system (the “boot-floppies”), and has been updated
to document the new Debian installer. However, for arm64, the manual has
not been fully updated and fact checked for the new installer. There may

Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.67
Severity: wishlist

I cannot exclude an essential package on the debootstrap
command line, e.g.

debootstrap --exclude=dash jessie /mnt

doesn't work as expected. It would be nice to have a
"do-as-I-say" option to exclude essential packages.

Please note that I don't have any concerns against dash.
Its just an example to show what I mean.

Regards
Harri

Package: debootstrap

Hello,

The documentation says

   --exclude=alpha,beta
Comma separated list of packages which will be removed from
download and extract lists. WARNING: you can and proba‐
bly will exclude essential packages, be careful using this option.

but this doesn't seem to work: I seem to be unable to remove
"Priority: required" packages with this. E. g. after debootstrapping
sid, it is perfectly possible and reasonable to remove things like
initscripts, sysv-rc, or lsb-base. They purge without any problem.
However, I cannot debootstrap without those:

| $ debootstrap --verbose --variant=minbase --exclude=initscripts,lsb-base

This is true even with --no-resolve-deps.

I also tried this patch
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=557322#24
with and without --no-resolve-deps.

Ultimately these packages shouldn't be "Priority: required" of course
(at least the SysV stuff should soon go away), but if someone knows
what they are doing, or for experiments --exclude should be applied
after dependency and "required" resolution, not before.

Thanks for considering,

Martin

Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.59

Very closely related to #742671 (in which supplying "sid" for
"base-installer/debootstrap_script" causes an error), I realized it
might be ideal if the fix came in both directions.

I've attached a patch that allows $4 (script) to be either an absolute
path or a path/file within /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts, so that
values like "sid" or "wheezy" can be supplied as the "script" argument
and DWIM.

Here's some proposed d/changelog text:

  [ Tianon Gravi ]

Of course, as I noted on #742671, I'm very happy to adapt this to better

debootstrap pulls several packages but not for the packages from tasks,
so I want to reassign back to debian-installer.

Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.89
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I was running sbuild-createchroot, and it failed with:
I: Chosen extractor for .deb packages: dpkg-deb
I: Extracting libacl1...
E: Error running debootstrap at /usr/sbin/sbuild-createchroot line 268.

Turns out that was happening because the target directory existed and
was not empty.

But neither debootstrap nor sbuild-createchroot printed out something
useful. Debootstrap surely shouldn't fail without saying what went
wrong.

Package: debootstrap
Version: 1.0.81ubuntu3.2
Severity: normal

debootstrap is unable to operate if the packages being included have a
virtual dependency which is not otherwise resolved.

Easy reproducer:
  # debootstrap --include=libnet-ssleay-perl stretch stretch
  [...]
W: Failure while configuring base packages. This will be re-attempted up to
five times.
W: See debootstrap.log for details (possibly the package libnet-ssleay-perl
is at fault)

The log shows error:
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libnet-ssleay-perl:
   libnet-ssleay-perl depends on perl-openssl-abi-1.1; however:
Package perl-openssl-abi-1.1 is not installed.

libnet-ssleay-perl depends on perl-openssl-abi-1.1, which is a virtual package
provided by perl-openssl-defaults.

debootstrap's pkgdetails_perl dependency resolution mechanism does not
consider virtual packages, so the dependency on perl-openssl-abi-1.1 is
basically ignored.

The expected outcome is for it to be resolved to perl-openssl-defaults,
which would then be installed along with the other packages and result in a
usable bootstrap.

I've reproduced this on v1.0.81ubuntu3.2 but from code inspection I can see
the same problem exists in current git - nothing examines Provides here.

Now we can see message as below.

$ debootstrap  --print-debs  stretch ~/tmp/stretch
