and those 'undefined symbols' error is gone, but still It got stuck on the
same issue as earlier, look like netboot installer lacks core drivers for
disks?
It look like that netboot.tar.gz in the above link does belong to debian
8.9 and not 8.10? As there is no versioning scheme available in the image.

Thank you.

I can not install a Debian Squeeze on a PC, from a businesscard CD, with XFS
filesystem.
When I format the whole disk with one XFS partition I have some warnings during
the base system install (debootstrap) :
"http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o//x_amd64.deb was corrupt"

However, when I format the whole disk with one EXT3 partition I have not these
warnings and the system installs without problem.

I cannot get such error with 6.0.10 business card ISO, with XFS filesystem.
Got authentication error with expired GPG keyring but it's not issue for
 debootstrap.

Cannot reproduce and it's archived release, so let's close it.

I was trying to install a debian system using debootstrap to a USB key. I

root at /mnt and the home at /mnt/home but debootstrap failed halfway through.
If i unmount the home folder debootstrap works as expected.

Bug#902321: task-desktop: please install fonts-symbola by default

2018-06-24 Thread Adam Borowski
Package: task-desktop
Version: 3.44
Severity: wishlist

Hi!
As much as many of us consider emojis to be a big mistake on part of the
Unicode consortium, it's undeniable that these characters see quite wide
use these days. Thus, at least one font that convers this range should
be installed by default.

Of these, it seems there are only two general-purpose fonts:
* fonts-symbola (nice)
* ttf-unifont (ugly and pixellated)

There are also fonts that have colourful images instead of glyphs, but these
are unfit for most programs, and are not supported by our current libraries.
It's an issue of so-called "text presentation" vs "emoji presentation" that,
according to the Unicode standard, programs should select based on
environment being "informal like texting and chats" vs "formal like word
processing" (TR51 §4 and §2). Text presentation is also needed when the
character's color is to be set via metadata such as CSS or ANSI SGR.

Thus, even library support issues aside, we need at least one font that
provides text presentation. Package firefox-esr includes
/usr/lib/firefox-esr/fonts/EmojiOneMozilla.ttf which provides emoji
presentation, but is not available to other programs via fontconfig
for the above reasons.

Thus, please add "Recommends: fonts-symbola" to task-desktop.

I've pushed a prospective branch (pu/fix-ftbfs-in-stretch) with two commits:

https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/debian-installer-netboot-images/commit/86f910f8e1e60e308747a7f53045862705b0a132

https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/debian-installer-netboot-images/commit/eb2e5b3fb437b288c4c83427fb1c0d213f7b5a5e

Only checked with the first few architectures (still on limited bandwidth),
but that seems to do the trick. Slightly not happy about having that check
and fallback done for each and every architecture (instead of once and for
all), which could again lead to bits and pieces from both sources mixed
together); but I guess that's a reasonable compromise (no big changes needed
in the code).

I'll let others comment on this bug report plus proposed solution; Didier
maybe?

(Of course testing needs to happen when there's a version in s-p-u again.)

Right, that allows us to build from s-p-u when catching up with d-i
changes staged into s-p-u, which happens for each and every point
release where d-i gets updated (I don't remember any where it was
skipped, but my memory is not to be trusted), starting right after r0.

Right, see commit 5a0d0847c8a12e2dd3f13ce86aff797f4472dbd6 for stretch;
previous releases should have something similar.

Well, I've seen a fair share of “complaints”, but no solutions, so I
fear this isn't going to be fixed any time soon indeed. Needless to say,
I'm not a huge fan of this specific requirement / policy violation, but
I have yet to see actual, viable solutions. From my rather self-centered
point of view, d-i releases are a sufficient burden already that I don't
wish to make this worse by adding some extra layers of complexity or
indirections.

At first glance, it seems to me this bug could be addressed in two
different ways, which don't seem to be too convoluted. The first way
would be to try the s-p-u download and fall back to s download, for each
and every download. But this could (probably only theoretically) lead to
inconsistent downloads, mixing bits and pieces from s-p-u and from s.
Plus plenty of errors when the default location isn't the right one.

I suppose a better way would be to figure out with an early test if the
target version is available in s-p-u or in s, and then pick the right
suite for all downloads. Patches for this second approach are welcome.
(Currently travelling, not easy to test things needed network access.)

[preseed] strings waiting to be made translatable

2018-06-24 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi,

I just found two strings in the templates.pot file for preseed, which seem
to be added in a rush, but made non-translatable at that time:

 snip --
#. Type: error
#. Description
#. XXX: should be made translatable after Stretch
#: ../preseed-common.templates:1001
msgid "Checksum error"
msgstr ""

#. Type: error
#. Description
#. XXX: should be made translatable after Stretch
#: ../preseed-common.templates:1001
msgid ""
"The ${ALGORITHM} checksum of the file retrieved from <${LOCATION}> fails to "
"match the expected value of \"${CHECKSUM}\". The file may be corrupt, or "
"the provided checksums may be out of date."
msgstr ""
- snap -

The relevant commits from 2016 are here:

Add strings:
https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/preseed/commit/31a2b3bf53edad8cd2024e9684efd3dd913fda2f

Make strings not-translatable later the same day:
https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/preseed/commit/fb33761616096b1877d46acb32fb94c902e1ff00

We should make them translatable now, right?
Now that Stretch is out since some days ... ;-)

Hmm, apparently the string above is not translatable ...
at least not via a po file, which could be parsed automatically as in the other

Ok, thanks.

How can find out, if there are more such packages?
(brltty is missing in our l10n statistics, so more translators may be
not aware of such waiting translation work for d-i.)
I cannot search for "udeb" at packages.d.o
Is there a complete list of packages, on which d-i depends/which are used
by d-i?

when performing a test install with an d-i_buster_alpha3 image and setting
language to German, I see an entry

"Access software for a blind person using a braille display"

so that menu entry is not translated.

Which package is reponsible for this?
The l10nstats show 100% for level1, and I cannot find the above string in
the d-i repository (master po files for example).

CC'ing Samuel, which is likely to be the right person for this :-)

Some more notes:

- the grub package will need some adaptions in l10nstat (grub is tricky, since
the source package is named grub2, but in the tarball it is grub)

- currently there seems to be no upstream repository for eject.
It still points to https://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/eject.git (which
  is Alioth).
I have already filed a bug on this some days ago ...
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=901714

- When things are running well for some time, I will change the references to
  "cvs" into "vcs" ...

Thank you Steve,
Our product used Debian 8.10 as netinstall base image to build on top and
we do not manipulate 'udeb' or other stuff in the product DVD
and netboot image i'm using also belongs to the same version I believe

the netboot kernel (which is initiating the boot process) can occur.

Though, i'm sure, but will cross check it again.

Thank you,

[installer l10n statistics] l10nstats re-activated

2018-06-24 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi,

a small note FYI:
I worked on re-activating l10nstats, to get translation statistics for the
installer back.
The changings implied the move from Alioth to Salsa, and also a dist upgrade
vom Wheezy to Stretch.

Finally, there are still some bits not fixed (like spellchecking, which is a
separate cron job; and documentation: I would like to update the docs/comments
in the gen-stats script), but statistics functionality is back.

Yesterday I pushed my final changings.
Last night the cron job broke, because I forgot two changes, which I added
just now.
But now, l10nstat should be back online.
