Bug#1063920: console-setup: initramfs keymap is not set and breaks my root crypted boot

2024-02-14 Thread Daniel Dehennin
Package: console-setup
Version: 1.226
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Since the upgrade to 1.226, I can't open my LUKS root FS beause of broken
initramfs.

I can still boot under 6.6.11 since its initramfs is not updated with latest
tools.

I compared both initramfs and found different console-setup keymap files and
SHA256:

$ sha256sum 11/main/etc/console-setup/cached_UTF-8_del.kmap

I hope it will help you to find what's going on.

What command are you using to run debootstrap?

This fails on a number of host/target combinations, but not all of them.

A mips64el target, for example, fails every time.

Would the maintainer(s) prefer separate bugs for each arch? The fault(s)
may not lie in the debootstrap package.

Bug#997094: debootstrap: 764:debootstrap cp "$0" "$TARGET/ instead of cp "/usr/sbin/$0" "$TARGET/

2024-02-14 Thread Ken Sharp

cp needs the fully-qualified path - not just $0/progname

I've tested this on Bash, Dash, Zsh and Tcsh on Linux and FreeBSD and
${0} already expands to the fully-qualified path. It never expands to
${0}/progname as that would always fail. Can you give and example of
where this fails?

Also in functions:1520 "$2" can sometimes be set to //path which causes
the subsequent perl line to fail (difficult to reproduce) So ${2#/} worked
for me - it currently works for me with no modification.

Can you give an example of where this happens? You could also submit a
patch if you wish.

Bug#1063878: di-utils: chroot-setup.sh creates ineffective diversions (DEP17)

I have confirmed this. The bad path is not problematic in itself,
dpkg-divert will move the file away and put it back as expected.

I believe it's because dpkg is removing /sbin/start-stop-daemon in favor
of /usr/sbin/start-stop-daemon that we are losing the diverted .REAL file.

Even though this file loss scenario is rare because you need to have
two specific dpkg version in bootstrap-base and pkgsel, it's still worth
fixing because the ineffective diversions means that any dpkg
upgrade in pkgsel will happily overwrite d-i's version of start-stop-daemon
and thus we might start seeing daemons running in the debian-installer
environment.

I consider this an acceptable work-around and it would be definitely a
great enhancement over having nothing.

I think tasksel deserves a new design, but well if we do not have
someone who might tackle this task we need to go with the means we have.

Thanks a lot for this inspiring idea.

FTR, in the Kali bug the case is really special:
1/ a dpkg with /sbin/start-stop-daemon is installed by debootstrap
   (bootstrap-base step)
2/ a dpkg with /usr/sbin/start-stop-daemon is installed (upgraded)
   during the pkgsel step

Could it be possible that if you have the same dpkg version in the
image and in the network repository, then you would not be bitten by
the bug?

i.e. is the the file-loss triggered only by the bad path in the
dpkg-divert call or is it triggered by the upgrade of dpkg between
both dpkg-divert calls?

I thought it was the latter... and that would explain why OpenQA is not
affected, it likely generates images against the release that it is
testing.

> Raphael, can you link this bug to the Kali bug?

Done.

That's probably a good idea but seeing how standard that's always been
at the very bottom suddenly pops up at the very top, I think it would
have warranted a slightly more verbose changelog entry…

(See also the length of some commit messages and the “subtleties”
mentioned there, one being about standard specifically…)

Besides, I'm very much not sure it's a good idea to have standard be
listed first. I'd expect people to want to turn desktop environment
on/off, and be accustomed to have that first. Do we really want to break
finger memory? Being able to disable standard to save a little space has
never looked like a bad idea to me, but having that be the first entry
on that list feels very weird.
