Bug#784045: debian-installer-launcher needs to depend on sudo

2015-05-02 Thread Daniel Baumann
Package: debian-installer-launcher
Severity: serious

debian-installer-launcher uses su-to-root which is in menu and doesn't
automatically pull in sudo. debian-installer-launcher however doesn't
work without sudo.

given that:

  * the original bug is in debian-installer which needed to be updated
for newer syslinux (and which has happened in git and which progress
of an uploaded can be tracked through it's original bug report at
#751731)

  * there's nothing that can be done in the syslinux package regarding
this bug report anyway (i.e. the bug 'goes' away without doing
anything at all in the syslinux package)

  * syslinux = 3:6.03~pre19+dfsg-1 has migrated to testing regardless

  * there was repeatedly not given any purpose to what #759189 filed
against syslinux would be good for

i'm reassigning and merging this bug with #751731 again. feel free to
close it if you like to keep only #751731 open though.

Because your package is actively dropping features your reverse
 dependencies are using.

there were two (suspected) reverse dependencies: debian-cd and
debian-installer. i filled bugs against both beginning of june. turns
out, debian-cd is not using isohybrid. debian-installer is the only
package using it.

So please avoid doing so until packages
have been adapted, uploaded, and possibly migrated to testing.

10 weeks should be enough, even for debian-installer, to add a simple
additional build-depends.

 Patches are always appreciated.

patch attached.

 About using syslinux-utils in build-depends, I don't know yet.
It'd be nice if someone could take some time to investigate that.

no need to overcomplicate things: debian-installer calls the 'isohybrid'
command which is in bin:syslinux-utils instead of bin:isolinux. adding
syslinux-utils to build-depends as you do for any other packages you are
using during the build is enough.

Bug#746743: syslinux 6.x to unstable on 2014-05-17

2014-05-03 Thread Daniel Baumann
now that the last revision of syslinux left NEW i would like to upload
syslinux 6.x to unstable in two weeks (2104-04-17).

however, syslinux 6.x has a few incompatible changes:

  * upstream: with the addition of efi support, syslinux modules are
now stored in a different location, e.g:

  /usr/lib/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 -
  /usr/lib/syslinux/modules/bios/vesamenu.c32

  * upstream: since syslinux 5.x, some bootloaders need additional
loader files (ldlinux.*) to be copied to the medium.

for syslinux/extlinux this is already handled automatically,
for the 'manual' bootloaders (isolinux/pxelinux), this needs to
be done manually.

  * upstream: since syslinux 5.x, modules have dependencies, e.g:

using vesamenu.c32, you also need libutil.c32 and libcom32.c32

for more information, see:
http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Library_modules

  * debian: with the addition of efi support, syslinux bootloaders
are packaged separately, e.g.:

isolinux.bin is in isolinux, pxelinux is in pxelinux, etc.

packages re-using the syslinux bootloaders should depend on
these individual bootloader packages.

the following packages are affected, i've send patches accordingly:

  * debian-cd: #746746
  * debian-installer: #746743
  * ipxe: #746747
  * libguestfs: #746748
  * refit: #746749
  * unetbootin: #746751

  * live-build: will do myself
  * syslinux-themes-debian: is orphaned; will take care of that

there is no problem with plymouth on systems that do not have a display

on systems that only support text modes, the text plugin is used

libc and initramfs-tools only).

on systems that support graphical output, a graphical theme can be used
(requires package plymouth-drm with ~500kb size, installed size ~800kb;
depends on cairo, libdrm, libglib, libkms, pango, libpng, fontconfig and
ttf-dejavu-core).

on systems that support graphical output but are incompatible (i.e. when
the installed version of the kernel/libdrm doesn't support bleeding edge
nvidia or ati cards yet), plymouth falls back to the text plugin
automatically.

NB: most of the plymouth-drm depends are already included in the default
amd64/i386 desktop package selections and the plymouth 'debian' theme is
part of the monolithic desktop-base package.

That's called a showstopper.

you're aware that regardless of syslinux version in sid, the current
vbox version in wheezy will not be able to boot any post-wheezy image at
all? so, again, the vbox bug is entirely unrelated to what version of
syslinux is in sid now and probably should be fixed anyway, even in wheezy.

(ftr) which is where i disagree, with the mentioned patch against d-i
and debian-cd, you can release d-i wheezy rc1, even with syslinux 5.x in
sid.

even more so: since steve uses a local copy of syslinux anyway (judging
from debian-cd sources as unfortunately the setup of debian-cd on the
buildhost is not documented) when invoking debian-cd, it doesn't matter
at all what version of syslinux is in sid.

therefore, right now, even without any patches, the only actually
affected things are the images within the debian-installer-images
tarball built by src:debian-installer, which i believe should be
possible to fix without too much of a hassle. let me know if you want me

which is not an argument.. any package that i don't use/care about
doesn't give any benefits to me when it get any upload. with that in
mind, from my point of view, for any package that i don't use, they
should be never ever touched at all to prevent bringing any (potential)
bug that could affect me indirectly.

i'm argueing for either an explicit unfrozen sid or an explicit frozen
sid. since it's neither right now, and you intend to overwrite the
maintainers decision via CTTE to upload newer syslinux to sid, you need
to argue against it, not 'doesn't gain anything'.

i've already made the case why i want newer syslinux in sid, and have
provided patches for the two packages that needs an update for that

first, this is a specific bug in vbox that was fixed some time ago but

at some later point).

How many (old) hardware machines has something
similar too? And how much more testing we need to declare that everything
we use is compatible?

second, if you follow the bug, it's affecting sid and doesn't affect
wheezy release images - they will have the same tested and working
syslinux version that has proven to be stable during d-i alpha/beta
images (unless i'm missing something and d-i *release* images are built
with sid packages as well, in which case i personally would consider
such a misfeature to be in critical need of a fix (iirc steve puts a
local copy of the 'to be used' syslinux version to be used by debian-cd
for release images manually on the local fs; not sure about the same
that ends up in the final release copy of debian-installer-images, will
check later on)).

i for my part have clearly said publicly many times when i'm going to

since you put yourself into uploaders of live-installer some time ago,
maybe you want to look at it yourself too?

Sorry, I'm still deeply convinced that this issue is mostly a case
that doesn't deserve an RC severity. I'll downgrade this bug again
in 4 weeks if nothing happened in the meantime.

should that be the case, i'll restore the original severity of course.

live-installer or by lacking a workaround in live-installer for
something else in d-i), it's serious.

if the bug is not to be fixed (or workarounded) in live-installer, the

If this is not intended for wheezy and if other

it is intended for wheezy, but other live-* packages can make use of it,

That said, it seems that communication with you is very hard, given your

live-installer requires working d-i, d-i currently is still too fragile.

honestly, i'm not sure how/if i can summarize it in public, it was a

You also seem to be unable to describe your changes to the existing
packages that you want to do except for handwaiving.

i've taken out the standalone preseeding backend stuff from
src:live-config into src:live-debconfig.

I don't see how we could handle this request, so I'm tagging it
moreinfo now, even if it might as well be closed unless there's
 more useful input.

ok, let's close it then (or rather, reassign to ftp-masters.. so they
can reject live-debconfig 3 from NEW, and i'll re-upload it as version
4 for jessie, that they then can process without problems anytime soon.

How would lxc depend on something live-*'ish?

for container configuration; the generic name for this was rejected by
ftp-master, bottom line is they think it's live-* stuff (eventhough it
is not), so it needed to use a package name out of the debian-live
namespace.

Please elaborate. What timeframe are you assuming?

we'll be having alpha1 out in a couple of days, so we have a baseline
of what still needs work. i expect one week (plus one week for safety)
until live-{build,boot,config,tools} is good enough for wheezy, and
after that, another week (plus one week for safety) for live-installer
and debian-installer-launcher. that would be somewhen arround end of
august. for live-manual i don't know about Bens plans, but should be
somewhat similar i think.

As for uncooperativeness it doesn't help that you ignore half of
 the mails.

i'm not aware to not have answered (or even ignored) any mails send to
this bug report, did i?

Maybe you need everything spelt out instead of blindly assuming
that you'd somehow get what questions we're aiming at.

i appreciate if you formulate questions in a direct, unambiguous and
an easy understandable way, yes.

I should not assume malice, I guess.

i prefer if you don't.

having lxdm at some later point though, is nice, and i wouldn't mind the
size decrease it bringts, however, until then the size difference
doesn't matter much.

otoh, choosing xdm is a no-go anyway, it doesn't support autologin
(which is essential for live systems) and i don't think that the the
installer (via tasksel) should use anything different than what we do
with the live systems.

Shouldn't it use lightdm by default like Xfce does?

lightdm is relatively buggy, does not reasonably support autologin yet,
and doesn't bring any advantages over gdm3. gdm3 is even smaller in
footprint size than gdm in squeeze, hence, using gdm3 in wheezy rather
than gdm in squeeze is already an improvement.

needs to contain it in order to work).

But the link to debian-cd created images answers the question in a
different way: It won't have installer images in contrib/non-free. The
only non-free stuff we would be likely to add - is added by debian-cd in

for derivatives that choose to support users with d-i+non-free-udebs

with your proposal, it's effectively impossible for derivatives to store
their d-i+non-free-udebs images in a reasonable location within the archive.

therefore my request to account for non-free within the archive for the
new installer images location *eventhough* official debian does not yet

Adding syslinux-udeb

2011-09-21 Thread Daniel Baumann

Hi,

currently, live-installer supports two installation modes, in a nutshell:

  * 'normal' mode: unpacking squashfs to /target, removing live-*
packages, result: regular non-live system.

  * 'live' mode: unpacking squashfs to /target, keeping live-*
packages, adding 'plainroot' bootparameter, result: live system

we intend to add a third, 'real live/dump' mode (name not yet clear):

  * ${new_mode}: copying squashfs to /target, rerunning bootloader
for target device, result: live system

in order to do that, and since we cannot rely on mounting the squashfs
for writing the bootloader from 'within' the live system to the target
disk, we need the bootloader available in d-i itself.

since in d-i, normal .deb packages cannot be installed (that would be in
the pool of the live-media), we need a udeb.

i therefore intend to add a syslinux-udeb shipping two files: mbr.bin
(~440byte) and syslinux (~55k). please give the required ack in order to
allow me to proceed with the upload of syslinux (which has to go through
NEW for that).

i've tested all permutations yesterday with mdadm, lvm and cryptsetup.
while it turned out that any permutations involving cryptsetup are now
fixed (as of squeeze r2; they were broken at least in anything before
r0), mdadm remains broken. the reason specific for mdadm is because lb
didn't manually include mdadm in pool/ on the media, d'oh. this is fixed

ftr: apart from the fact that since the version of the netboot images

Can you point me at a way to reproduce this?
Alternatively, a syslog from an installation run with the

please state the *exact* version of the daily images that were used to
build that image. in addition, make sure that you can still reproduce
the issue with the latest available daily image (please state the exact
version of that one too when you try).

Switching default install entry to graphical installer?

2010-08-03 Thread Daniel Baumann
Hi,

i've been testing the graphical installer quite intensively during the
last days and it works very well. given that these days most of the
crappy hardware that used to not work with g-i has either vanished
completely, or, represents a supposedly so insignificant share of the
target audience, that i think we should make g-i the default entry on
the regular d-i images, as it's much nicer for the general audience and
supports more languages.

Regards,
Daniel
