Date: 2012-08-12

Machine: whitebox PC, AMD CPU, no floppy drive

Comments/Problems:

I got similar observed behavior to what Don got, but different output
on the f4 console:

kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 2
EXT2-fs (fd): error: unable to read super block
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 2
EXT3-fs (fd): error: unable to read super block
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 2
EXT4-fs (fd): error: unable to read super block
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

Then the installation stopped. I could open the f2 command-line
console and enter commands, so the machine wasn't totally hung, but
the installation process wouldn't proceed any farther.

Comments/Problems:

There are some spurious errors in the boot process (after grub) but
before I get asked for a password. These don't seem to cause any
problems, after I enter the password it boots fine:

   Volume group "squeeze" not found
   Skipping volume group "squeeze"
Unable to find LVM volume squeeze/root
   Volume group "squeeze" not found
   Skipping volume group "squeeze"
Unable to find LVM volume squeeze/swap_1
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...

cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available

Thanks for your hard work, Squeeze looks great!

Bug#609558: seems to be a sequencing problem

2011-01-11 Thread toby cabot
If I wait until the initramfs drops me into the shell, then run
scripts/local-top/cryptroot, then exit the boot process succeeds.

Bug#609558: more info

2011-01-10 Thread toby cabot
I poked around a little more and it looks as if things are close to
working. The boot process looks like it has hung but if I wait long
enough it drops into a shell then I can:

cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb2 mm177490-pc
vgchange -a y mm177490-pc

and then "exit" which continues the boot process until I get:

Starting early crypto disks...sdb2_crypt (starting)
Enter pass phrase to unlock the disk /dev/sdb2(sdb2_crypt): Command failed:
cannot access device

If I enter the passphrase enough times (same error over and over) then
eventually the boot process will succeed.

Comments/Problems:

Attempted to install an encrypted LVM system on a USB-attached hard
drive. Tried to do as "vanilla" an install as possible, accepting the
defaults where I could. One non-default is that I wrote GRUB to
(hd1,0), the USB drive, instead of the default since I didn't want to
disturb the primary drive which has an encrypted Windows installation.

Everything appeared to go OK but the system can't boot. It reaches
the GRUB menu but when GRUB tries to boot the kernel I don't get
prompted for a password and I get:

Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xde
Kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.26-686 root=/dev/mapper/mm177490--pc-root ro
Error 17. Cannot mount the selected partition.
