There's also an issue with the D-I section. The fact that ssh was used
with network-console was the reason why d-i needed a rebuild, but the
announcement should also have mentioned that using older CDs will result
in vulnerable host keys being generated when openssh-client is initially
installed from CD [1] and that that is also fixed with the new release.

I also feel a reference to the relevant DSA would have been appropriate.

IMO with these omissions Joey's earlier suggestion [2] of a special DSA
about all this does make a lot of sense. Someone else will have to take
the initiative for that though.

I'm sorry that I wasn't available to comment this weekend, but the info I
had was (from #d-cd on Wednesday):
22:52:53 : Sledge: planing for r4 is, that Ganneff and me are doing

22:54:54 : fjp: yes. i will contact you tomorrow evening about the
text for the press release.
22:55:20 : need to clarify a few things first. eg. who is sending
out the announcement

I'd already reminded Martin of the need to coordinate the announcement
earlier (and it is in the SRM checklist [3]).

The first actual pings I got to review the RN were on Saturday (from
#d-boot):
14:39:54 : fjp`: I got a first draft of the etch-and-a-half
announcement ready at http://people.debian.org/~tolimar/tmp/ . Could you
please have a look at it?

Given that the release was planned for Friday and Martin was going to
contact me on Thursday I really do not see how I should have known I
should have planned on being available on Saturday and Sunday as well.
As it happened I was not. Guess that's the risk when things are left until
the very last minute, especially if you _know_ you need input from
others.

I don't know how the communication between RT and d-publicity has been, so
I also don't know if/how things could have been started up sooner. From
my PoV it's primarily the job of the RT to make sure things get started
up early enough to allow for needed coordination/reviews/translation.

Cheers,
FJP

Re: Please review announcement of upcoming release of Debian 4.0r4 "etch-and-a-half"

2008-07-27 Thread Joey Hess
I'm sorry that this is late, but the announcement has a rather
disturbing number of problems. I'd suggest at least the following changes:

New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular
installation
media accompanied with the package archive respectively will be available
soon
   at the regular locations.

This sentence is basically incomprehensible. How is installation media
accompanied by the package archive? "respectively" to what? I don't understand
what it's trying to say, so I can't even suggest a rewrite.

"Etch and a half" is Debian's desire

Poetical, but false. Suggest inserting "the result of" after "is".

This marks the first time the Debian project updates several core packages
in its stable distribution without security implications and demonstrates its
   huge dedication for their users.

The above is perfectly well written, but it is also laughable puffery. If
we have a huge dedication to our users, why is this the first time we managed
to do this in over ten years? Suggest s/and demonstrates.*\.//

Components newer than the first release of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 ("etch") that
were not supported yet will be detected by an updated installation routine
which is able to install a newer Linux kernel (2.6.24) on the freshly
installed
   system.

While I suspect that there's a reading of the above that makes every word of it
true, it's not the obvious reading. I think that most people will read it to
suggest that d-i tries to figure out if the system needs 2.6.24 or can get by
with the old kernel and choses which to install, which, AFAIK is not true.
Suggest the following text, which comes from
etch/debian-installer/etchnhalf:

The "etch-and-a-half" release is essentially just the most recent
point release for etch, but with a more recent kernel (version
2.6.24). The main purpose of this release is to allow installation of
"etch" on systems not supported by the 2.6.18 kernel that is used in
   regular "etch" installs.

Bad English:
Dual-head setups are also supported rudimentary.
Replace:
There is also rudimentary support for dual-head setups.

Comma additions:

for the first time in Debian's history, an update for a stable distrubtion
also
^
adds support for newer hardware, by giving users the option to install newer
 ^
  drivers.

Note that in general I am disconcerted by the lack of review our press
announcements are getting, and the quality of their text.

One minor bit; while dcc was also subject to security issues that were
not backportable, it was mostly removed as the outdated version was causing
harm to the DCC server network and a newer version couldn't be released
since upstream went non-free in later releases.

So this should rather say "Incompatible with DCC network, security issues"

The Debian project is pleased to announce the fourth update of its stable
distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codename ). In addition to
correcting several security problems and a few serious defects in the stable
release, for the first time in Debian's history an update for a stable
distrubtion also adds support for newer hardware by giving users the option to
install newer drivers.

Existing Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 installation CDs and DVDs can continue to be
used to install this update. After installation, upgrading via an up-to-date
Debian mirror will cause any out of date packages to be updated. However, users
of the network-console installation method are strongly encouraged to update
their media, see the "Debian Installer" portion of this announcement for
more information.

Those who install updates frequently from security.debian.org won't have
to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are
included in this update.

New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular
installation media accompanied with the package archive respectively
will be available soon at the regular locations.

Upgrading to this revision online should be done by directing the
aptitude (or apt) package tool (see the sources.list(5) manual page) at
one of Debian's many FTP or HTTP mirrors. A comprehensive list of
mirrors is available at:

  http://www.debian.org/mirror/list

About etch-and-a-half

Additional packages have been added in the Debian 4.0r4 point release to
increase the set of hardware supported by Debian 4.0 (etch). This includes
packages based upon the Linux 2.6.24 kernel and additional drivers for the X
window system. Installation of these additional packages is not required and
will not occur by default. This update represents no change to the support of
previously available packages.

The existing 2.6.18-based kernel will continue to be the default kernel for
the etch release.

These packages have been updated or newly introduced through etch-and-a-half:

Debian-Installer Update

The Debian-Installer was updated to repair an issue with the network-console
installation option. Due to a lack of entropy in how the host key is generated,
earlier Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 installers are vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle
attack. Two other issues regarding installation on already existing RAID
setups and recognizing PowerPC64 system have been fixed as well.

We should probably mention in the etch+0.5 release notes that 2.6.24
breaks multipath (since we didn't include the devicemapper/multipath
update):
 http://teams.debian.net/lurker/message/20080430.121446.c24b0824.de.html
So people with multipath-tools installed should _not_ install the new

Adjustment_s_, plural. Confusing "to serious problems to a stable
release". Also, avoid repeating "problems", don't imply we're
shuffling bugs without fixing them, and turn it into "not only...
but also".

This update not only adds corrections for security problems and a few fixes

I don't understand what the "respectively" means here... I'll adopt

Please review announcement of upcoming release of Debian 4.0r4 "etch-and-a-half"

2008-07-26 Thread Alexander Reichle-Schmehl
Hi!

Attached you'll find the current draft for the announcement of
"etch-and-a-half". Please review it; current schedule for it to be send
out is tomorrow.

I'll make the most up to date version available at
http://people.debian.org/~tolimar/tmp/ ; patches for the wml-file (which
is used to generate the HTML and the TXT version for the mail) are most
welcome, everything else is more work for me ;)

Frans, could you please pay special attention to the paragraph about d-i?

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

The Debian project is pleased to announce the fourth update of its
stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codename ). This update
not only adds corrections for security problems and a few adjustment to serious
problems to a stable release, it also adds support for newer hardware by giving
users the option to install newer drivers.

Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian
GNU/Linux 4.0 but only updates some of the packages included. Even if you need
new drivers during installation time there is no need to throw away 4.0 CDs or
DVDs. If you don't need newer drivers you'll only to update against
ftp.debian.org after an installation, in order to incorporate those late
changes.

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have
to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are
included in this update.

New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular
installation media accompanied with the package archive respectively
will be available soon at the regular locations.

Upgrading to this revision online is usually done by pointing the
aptitude (or apt) package tool (see the sources.list(5) manual page) to
one of Debian's many FTP or HTTP mirrors. A comprehensive list of
mirrors is available at:

Regarding etch-and-a-half

Additional packages have been added in the Debian 4.0r4 point release to
increase the set of hardware supported by Debian 4.0 (etch). This includes
packages based upon the Linux 2.6.24 kernel and additional drivers for the X
window system. Installation of these additional packages is not required and
will not occur by default. This update represents no change to the support of
previously available packages.

The existing 2.6.18-based kernel will continue to be the default kernel for
the etch release.

These package are update for etch-and-a-half:

Debian-Installer Update

Due to changes regarding creating of ssl certificates used during
installation via the network-console the Debian-Installer got updated,
too. Two other issues regarding installation on already existing RAID
setups and recognizing PowerPC64 system have been fixed, too.

Miscellaneous Bugfixes

This stable update adds several binary updates for various architectures
to packages whose version was not synchronised across all architectures.
It also adds a few important corrections to the following packages:
