The problem is missing IDE-floppy support in installation kernel (tested

install drivers and rescue from ZIP/LS-120 disk. But when I've choosed
it got report: problem mounting drive.

That sounds like another bug, can you elaborate? We're you forced to

Bug#123926: Same problem, but on udma100-something

2001-12-30 Thread Martin Str|mberg

FWIW, I've exactly the same problem. Everything the install program
tries to mount fails while I can mount things manually (at Alt-F2).

Was also very confused until I understood that I had to mount the
FAT32 partition on /instmnt and not /mnt.

I'm using the udma100-something flavour.

Alas I can't make a boot floppy because the install program is trying
to mount it and fails.

So in general it seems the testing distribution (which I presume is
woody because it looked for files in something/woody/something)
can't mount FAT and FAT32 things. But manually (at console 2) it works
fine.

Right,

MartinS

The DOS `install.bat' batch file located in the `udma100-ext3' directory

Installation report on i386 using udma100-ext3 boot-floppies

2001-12-18 Thread andrelop

Hi,

I've just tried to install on i386 (Pentium 166 MMX, 64MB RAM, 2GB
harddisk).

i18n seems to be working fine :-) The welcome screen is lacking accents
on all words which might be using it. I didn't translated it myself
so I'll give a try later.

Picked a language, configured the keyboard, partitioned the harddisk
using ext3 for 2 partitions and created a swap partition. All went fine.

Went to install modules and to download them from network (nice that it
told me I have no network configured and give me a chance to configure
my network). The modules were downloaded (rescue.bin and drivers.tgz)
and the installer goes back to the language selection screen. The modules
were downloaded from the default location which was given by the installer
screen, which is http.us.debian.org.

So from the language selection screen I repeated all the steps above and
downloaded the modules again. One more time, installer goes back to the
language selection screen. I just jumped all the other steps and now the
installer is installing the base system. I'll try to report the
conclusion of my tests later when the installer finishes downloading the
base-system.

I'm using Adam's disks (rescue.bin and root.bin) which I got from
http://people.debian.org/~aph/debian/dists/woody/main/disks-i386/3.0.18-2001-12-18/images-1.44/udma100-ext3/
 .

What do you mean by the welcome screen? The release notes, or the language
chooser, or something else?

The modules were downloaded (rescue.bin and drivers.tgz)
and the installer goes back to the language selection screen.

This means that dbootstrap crashed. It's happened to me once today as well.
I'm not sure if this is an artifact of the same newt problem that causes the
crash after installing base, or something different.

The release notes screen, which is found at
boot-floppies/scripts/rootdisk/messages/language/release_notes . I've
just found it is lacking some accents. I'll correct it and send updates
soon.

I hope we can fix this one before 3.0.18 release. Is it being released
already ? This one isn't blocker but one will need to skip some steps to
proceed with installation with this bug remains.

Make sure the particular controller is supported by the linux kernel.

Then,

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=82018

from the above link it looks like you should try the latest idepci boot
floppies available from the following.

http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/idepci/

Details on installation can be found in the Debian Installation Guide
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/install.

Good luck!

Also, if you want do do your hard disk working with UDMA 100 (in
future), you
will need a special cable for use with UDMA 5 (and you hard disk will
need
be working with cable select instead of master/slave selection).

udma100 asus a7v not found [lhomer lhomer@teleport.com] Re: Fw: [PLUG] hopeful new Linux recruit

2000-12-04 Thread Karl M. Hegbloom

My small problem has been solved. Thank you for all the help and support. I
am now able to install and run off a hard drive
although the installation named the drive "hdg", and I can't boot from that
drive just yet..I also can no longer see it in a windows directory..small
matters. Apparently my board is just strange enough so that even Suse 7.0
can't recognize the drives on my board. I found a recent fix on the Suse
site that worked. I would like to get back to using Debian. Do these fixes
usually propagate to other installations very rapidly?

Details at:
http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/a7vpromise.html

I tried the debian udma installation from rescue and root floppies with a
single windows bootable hard drive (WDC AC34 300L) and it couldn't find
the
hard drive. I see my zip drive (hdb), my two cdroms (hdc, hdd), hda is
identified with ide0 and ide0 with irq 14, but no named drives or ide
controllers associated with ide0. In Windows the "Win95-98 Promise
Ultra100
IDE controller (PDC20265)" is assigned irq 10. My suse installation
identifies irq 10 with an unknown mass storage device, but also claims I
have no hard drive. Thanks for the advice and interest.

Do you see all devices listed in the POST messages when the system
 boots?

The ASUS CUBX motherboard has 2 IDE controllers, and 4 IDE connectors.
To enable the 3rd, 4th connectors you must enable the on-board 'SCSI'
controller. (Yes, it says SCSI in the BIOS setup, but it's really
IDE.

Thank you to the ENU tech. who told me that "SCSI" means "2nd IDE
 controller"
   in ASUS/CUBX lingo. :-)

Actually my cdrom drive and my cdrw show up during the initial post and
the hard disk shows up whenever the Promise controller scans for
devices. When the hard disk is hooked up to the ATA100 controller the
disk does not show up in the BIOS.

Here is the links to boot and root floppies that you can download and
see if the disk is recognized. They are for Debian and you would need
other disks or cdroms to actually install. Booting with them would let
you see if it an UDMA issue.

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44
 /udma66/rescue.bin
(boot)

ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44
 /udma66/root.bin
 (root)

  Hope this helps
  David

I have to install Debian 2.2 on an ASUS A7V motherboard 'loaded' with an
UDMA100 Promise chip and a hard-disk attached to it, no other hard disk.

I read somewhere that UDMA100 was backward compatible with UDMA66,
so I tried the UDMA66 'flavor' of the installation disks for Potato,
but without look, or there is some special bootflag I haven't seen.

Is it possible to install Potato *now* in this kind of hardware
(maybe another set of disks not *officially* released) ?.

Not having this hardware or any access to it, I have no idea. Maybe
someone else on debian-boot will know? Or try the user support list?
Let us know if we need to change anything.

I was under the impression you needed a 2.4. kernel to use udma100.

It really comes down to the chipset you use, the UDMA66 disks have
support for the HPT366 chip (and others), but i think your motherboard
would have a HPT370.

All the UDMA100 motherboards i have seen also have an UDMA33/66
controller, if you plug your hdd into that slower controller you should
be able to install to it using the UDMA disks. Then if you really want
UDMA100 you may have to recompile a 2.4 kernel and move it to you faster
controller.
