The USB CD-Rom drive coming with a Dell Latitude X300 laptop is not properly
detected and mounted by D-I (20041104 sid_d-i businesscard CD).

PS to F. Mescam: can you try to switch to the 2nd console, then modprobe
the needed modules (I guess sr_mod as well as the USB modules).

When using an installed Debian testing system, the drive is detected as
follows:

What was the bug number of the bug report you wanted me to reply to

 See above.

I got a chance to do an install from your mini.iso on a test machine.
It's a G4 350 MHz (AGP graphics). I'm not clear as to whether this
will install your test yaboot or not, but here's what happened:

This will use my test yaboot for booting from the CD.

I booted off the CD and chose the default (i.e. non-expert) install at
the boot: prompt. I answered all the i18n questions with the default
(US-English) and configured the network manually (no DHCP on this net).
I chose the debain.rutgers.edu mirror because it's located in the
next building over on the same campus and I have a 100-Mbit connection
via campus LAN to it from the test machine. (I'm used to doing installs
over a fairly fast cable-modem that gets about 4 Mbit/sec on a good
day. This was *much* faster. -8) When it came time to partition the
disk, I chose a guided partitioning, and it set me up with a 1 MB
boot partition, a 4 GB root partition, and a 260 MB swap partition.

Then, for some reason I don't understand, it tried to install the
quik bootloader. This is definitely a NewWorld machine, so it should
have known better -- I would think! In any case, that got an error,
and it offered to let me install yaboot instead, which I did.

This is definitively a bug, could you fill a bug report about this ? i guess
quil-installer or debian-installer are the packages to report a bug against.

When the first phase was over, and it came time for the reboot,
everything went completely as expected, and I finished the installation
after an uneventful reboot. If this was using your new yaboot, then
I'd say the test was successful.

Well, to test booting from the disk, you need to install my yaboot .deb, run
ybin, and try rebooting.

If this sequence does *not* exercise your new yaboot, please give me
instructions for what to do next. I'll be in Atlanta for the
USENIX/LISA conference all next week, so my next opportunity for
testing will be a week from now.

Ok.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

console-data 2002.12.04dbs-46.1 uploaded to delayed/3-day

2004-11-13 Thread Christian Perrier

A new version of the console-data package has been uploaded to the
delayed queue.

This version is aimed at cleaning out the package's bug log with bugs
which are easy to fix. Some of these bugs are more or less related to
Debian Installer (d-i) development. None of these are critical for d-i
though. A few will however make d-i a little bit more user friendly.

I have tested this upload all past week long. The most invasive
patch, aimed at alphabetical sorting of keymap names has been sorted
for 4 weeks now. This is a very common remark from d-i testers that
the keyboard maps list looks like a messy list.

I think about raising a fake RC bug in order to prevent it to enter testing.

In my opinion, this package has to live in sid so that important bugs
are found. Then letting it enter testing will be possible. Doing so
will mostly depend whether d-i is released at that time or not.

As some udebs are part of d-i initrd's, the final word on propagating
this package to testing should be from the d-i team, imho.

PS: the delayed queue in in people.debian.org/~tfheen/DELAYED/ for
people wanting to grab the udebs and test them on local d-i
builds. PLEASE DO THIS as soon as possible.

Changes to the package. Lines markes with DI affect d-i behaviour

  * Translations:
- Added Macedonian (mk) by Georgi Stanojevski
- Corrected encoding error in French. Closes: #277569
DI * Select br-abnt2 as the default Brazilian keymap. Closes: #275273.
DI * Added Lithuanian keymap to console-keymaps-at, console-keymaps-acorn
for debian-installer. Closes: #275087.
  * Fixed dangling symlink in console-keymaps-at; thanks to Recai Oktas.
Closes: #262693.
  * Add Anton Zinoviev as co-maintainer.
  * Christian Perrier
- Add Greek UTF-8 keyboard map. Closes: #273461
- Add Persian keyboard map. Closes: #267360
- Add Arabic keyboard map. Closes: #267451
DI- Remove fr-latin1 choice in console-keymaps-at.templates
The keyboard map is still kept for backwards compatibility
  Closes: #257632
- Sync changelog for sarge and sid
DI- Remove mac-usb-euro choice in console-keymaps-usb.templates
as well as the console-keymaps-usb udeb
This will remove the suspicious European choice in d-i
  Closes: #280070
DI- sort keymaps in udeb templates. Closes: #259867
DI- default to US keymap for USB keyboard and nl_NL installs
  Closes: #280069
  * Martin Pitt (commited by C. Perrier)
DI- fixed debian/patches/00_added_keymaps.patch: mac-linux-keys-bare.inc
previously assigned AltGr to 56 and Alt to 125, which is wrong; fixed by
swapping the assignments. (Ubuntu bug #958)
  Closes: #280433

Maybe you have a corrupt CD image?
If you are interested in a more recent version of Debian,
then I would suggest to try the new debian installer. See
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
The netinst CD image contains just some basic packages
to allow an installation via network. If there are problems,
then send an EMail to this list.
But it should be mentioned that this is still software
under development.
Good luck

creating custom sarge-cdrom(changed initrd's)

2004-11-13 Thread A. Demarteau (linux rules!)
hey people,
I want to create a custrom cdset where I Am able to change the initrd
files for kernel 2.4 and 2.6 startup.
THis to cinlude certian accessibility support (already present on
floppydisks, but that's not good enough).

I actually though of copying the cd-contents to disk, changing the intrd's
and remakign the iso-image.

However, I noticed that the fiels included in the boot-sector of the cd
are not on the cd image itself (mkisofs lists this at least for the
cataluge-file).

question is, what package is used to make debian cds bootable?
And ofcourse, howto replicate the workings of it.
in short; how do I built the cd-image and make it bootable liek a regular
debian-cd.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

bootsplash option for d-i?

2004-11-13 Thread Xan
Hi,

I just want to know if in the new debian installer is considered the
possibility that the user could select a bootsplash kernel:

 - I think that it were cool for desktop users. So perhaps in novice mode
d-i could ask to user if he/she wants a boot with image or not; or not, maybe
a desktop user don't want to see this kind of questions (it's a topic for
discusion, maybe). But in expert mode, I think it should be included.

 - I think that what splash is the default should be a discussion topic. But,
in meantime, we could have debblue [http://debblue.debian.net/]. Personally,
I wish an animated spiral debian logo that grows more and more as progress
bar (a complete spiral is 100% of boot process). But it's an idea and
probably implies more work (better use done work).

Well, I finish.

Thanks for reading it,
Xan.

PS: sorry for my poor english. It's not my mathernal language.

Bug#280953: Command line arguments ignored

This is indeed fixed in the pre-RC2 version of the installer. Thanks
for your assistance.

(The Sarge installer is much improved over Woody, by the way. Pity
ext3 is the default -- Reiserfs would be a much better choice for a
fresh install.)

d-i manual: doubled section in automatic-install.xml

2004-11-13 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello,

in ../en/install-methods/automatic-install.xml of the d-i manual
is one part existing two times. I would propose to change this.

Patch attached.

If desired, I could commit this myself, since I have write access
for german translation. Any comments?

Greetings
Holger

I changed it in a different way, that keeps the link to the example file
as the first thing a user will read. Thanks for spotting that.
