I did the change on rootskel but can't upload it as it fails to build

First I'd like to thank you for all your work and offer help to merge
ready things in trunk during those days. I'm at Debcamp and have time
to work on that with you on that.

Another thing I'd like to inform you is that netcfg has now support

branch of busybox and remove few files to udhcpc to be choosen (look
at mailing list how to test it) but it ought to make your testing

Cool, thanks.

Well now I'm starting to ponder if we ought to commit it right now or
wait until you do more changes and merge it all at once.

Since we're at beggining of the development cycle I'm more for
commiting it soon so we can discover any introduced bugs (or ugly
non-predicted behaviour) and also leave kfreebsd branch with the
non-ready changes. What others think?

The only thing that could be done in kernel-wedge is the ntfs one that
you could fix it now and use it in the package.

There's no reason to let it to later since it will make your life easier.

[RFH] Update of Debian Installer for 2.6.29

2009-04-21 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello porters,

Most arches has 2.6.29 packages ready (AFAIK only hppa lacks them
right now) and I also did most changes for all arches on SVN to get
2.6.29 updating as easy as possible. Now, we need porters' help.

Please check your pet arch and update the kernel and modules for
2.6.29. This is quite important to us to start testing installer with
this kernel.

Currently those are the arches that have already switch:

 - i386
 - amd64
 - mips*
 - mipsel*
 - armel*

I taged the ones that has pending changes in SVN with "*".

So if your arch is not listed above, you should take a look and try to
update it. If you can't do that in near future please speakup and
we'll try to find someone to handle it.

Thanks a lot by looking at it.

Fully agree; this is not to be at same patch. Please clean it up in next

I belive that there's no need to support backward compatibility since it
is not officially supported yet.

I just didn't get where those suites are suppose to be done. Do you mean
a suite script(1) at debootstrap or a specific suite at DAK(2)?

In both cases I disagree, bellow I detail why:

 1) doing a specific suite for debootstrap surely makes sense as a
meanwhile solution but I'd much prefer to have it properly fixed at
 override side.

 2) I belive it could be done in DAK in override layers; a common one
and a specific one for each kernel that override the value for it. In
DAK POV it would look like a arch specific override and I see no
problem in this approuch for the problem. Obviously, DAK people would
need to comment on this if we really thing this is the way to go.

To make easy for us to decide about it all, it would be nice if Luca
could split the patch in two. One adding the
--extra-{mirror,suite,include} options and another with freebsd
specifics. Could you (Luca) take a look and split it for us?

First I'm curious why to use another script to install instead of
regular debootstrap. Did you try to "merge" your required changes in
debootstrap?

It happens depending on the priority so mount is called early in case of
bsd; I belive that it needs to be part of base in kfreebsd to properly
fix it.

Sure there're but not before they're tested and workarounds got removed.

If we could merge it, it would be the right thing to do I guess. Anyone

I'd say to try to merge it into debootstrap.

For the work to be easier I'd suggest you to keep a debootstrap svn
mirror using git-svn and use it for your development effort so you can
easily rebase your patches against current source and others are also
free to help to get things fixed with you.

This looks to be the wrong way to fix missing dependencies for a
specific kernel. I belive the right way to fix it is to have override
based on kernel and then allow packages to have different sections and
priorities depending on it.

So for it to be done I belive we'd need to add this support on DAK
(AFAIK it lacks it).

While I understand why those options are required I dislike the idea to
have them at official deboostrap.

I'd much prefer to have it designed to work properly with the kfreebsd
integrated on Debian. This could require that a small "hacked"
debootstrap to be kept around for a while to be used in meanwhile.

Others?

For parted I belive it would be better to be done at parted's upstream
side. I belive that it should be easy to get that supported at parted
side.

I could help on that but cannot offer to mentor it due my lack of time.

Yes you're right about that. We need to check what could be done and
check alternatives. I bet most of things are doable.

I think it would be nice, specially since we'd have someone focused on
that. I do belive we would do a great improvement and it would be a nice
project to have.

I'd like to know more details about the project idea and what would be
the roadmap for that.

Ross Cameron writes:

The installer itself is mostly OS neutral but we do offer support for
many Linux specific features.

I don't think that we need to redo all that work but instead look for
alternatives available for those features and add support for them, as
has been done for the Linux ones.

Please take a look at the source of kernel-wedge and your pet

and will also upload i386 and amd64 packages (since they're the
architectures I'm able to test).

out using 2.6.24 kernels. This is where development can start to be
done _right now_.

Please porters, let's start the work for upgrading Debian Installer to
2.6.24. Those changes (for kernel-wedge and kernel modules packages)
should remain on SVN repository and _CANNOT_ _BE_ _UPLOADED_ until we
does have Beta1 images ready. As soon as it gives no trouble for us,
I'll ping you all back to uploads start to be done.

Robert and Sven,

I would like to start a separated branch for it on darcs (parted is
moving to darcs just after 1.8 release but we already have the
repository available for hacking on the 2.0 basis) and then make it
available on upstream version on 2.0 or even on 1.8.x release
depending how deeply are the changes.

Robert, would you mind if I provide you the repository for us start to
work on that?
