Hi, thanks for your patches. I've just applied them into my source trees. I don't know when I'll upload them in Debian because we are working for a new layout for debian zope packages which will require some time to be accomplished. However, you can find the fixed packages (with the new zope layout) on http://www.kobold.it/plone/, so if you have time and you are curious, you can have a look at them. Bug#301000: vino: bashism in postinst script
Package: vino Version: 2.8.1-1.1 Severity: minor Tags: patch For redirecting stdout and stderr the postinst script uses the redirection operator which is only available in bash. When /bin/sh is not a symlink to bash (I use dash), the stderr is not redirected and I can see this error message: kill: 18: Usage: kill [-s sigspec | -signum | -sigspec] [pid | job]... or kill -l [exitstatus] This is just a cosmetic bug, it does not prevent the installation of the package. Bug#277750: Shorten down the Dutch translation of the root password question dialog in package shadow
Dear Dutch language team, In #277750, I reported a bug about a too long dialog box for the root password dialog. This dialog is used in standard installs and having it too long may confuse users. Please find attached the relevant nl.po file. Could you take care of shortening it. As the shadow package maintainer now (along with the maintenance team), I believe I get get this fixed in time for sarge even if I stupidely forgot about this and more stupidely forgot to CC you when reporting the bug. PS : I didn't recheck since I reported this...so I assume the dialog is still too long but indeed, I'm not completely sure of that. -- nl.po Description: application/gettext

Package: kmail Version: 4:3.3.2-0pre1 Severity: important KMail sometimes hangs for a certain amount of time (maybe about 30 seconds but it's possible that I err here). I think, this problem started after upgrading to this very version. The freezes happen in various situations - when sending an e-mail, when scrolling through a mail message in the main window, etc., etc. KMail doesn't crash, it's just that I have to wait for a rather long time until KMail continuous to work as expected again. Bug#301003: conglomerate: Can't use an input method
Package: conglomerate Version: 0.9.0-1 Severity: normal I'm running SCIM, and I can't find a way ot use it in conglomerate in a useful way. Say I want to type an À. Because of bug #210490, I have to use an input method instead of just using Compose. (For other characters, for instance Japanese, there's no way to input text without an input method anyway). So I switch to, say, the M17N-t-latn-pre method, then proceed to type my À: first `, then A. Problem is: after I typed the `, nothing appears in the Conglomerate window. The À appears when I finish typing it, though. If I started Conglomerate fro ma terminal, I get the following messages on the term: ** Message: preedit_changed_cb: preedit string is: `,cursor pos=1 ** Message: preedit_changed_cb: preedit string is: `,cursor pos=1 ** Message: preedit_changed_cb: preedit string is: ,cursor pos=0 ** Message: commit_cb: À Now this bug is relatively minor for this particular character (which I only provide as a test case), but it effectively prevents typing Japanese (and probably other languages too). All the Japanese input methods I've seen are phrase-based: you need to first type the transliteration of your phrase (which gets displayed in hiragana, the Japanese phonetic alphabet), then pick the actual kanji phrase from a dictionary of known phrases with matching transliteration. The phrase can be rather long, and it's going to be a big pain if you can't see what you type. Bug#301011: more verbose instructions on new upstream package
Package: developers-reference Version: 3.3.5 Severity: wishlist Please include Brian Nelson recommendations for things to be done on new upstream package http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2004/12/msg00310.html: First of all, I'll assume you've skimmed over the source as part of your initial packaging. I usually go through the following steps: 1. Read the upstream changelog, NEWS, and whatever other documentation they may have released with the new version. 2. Do a 'diff -urN' between the old and new upstream sources to try to get a feel for the scope of the changes, where work is actively being done (and thus where new bugs may appear), and also keep an eye out for anything suspicious. 3. Port the old Debian packaging to the new version. This basically involves applying the diff.gz from the old package to the new one and incrementing the debian/changelog. Tools like uupdate help automate this for you. Personally I keep all of my packages in a subversion repository and thus do an svn merge. 4. If the patch/merge did not apply cleanly, inspect the situation to determine what failed (clues are left in .rej files). Most often the problem is that a patch you applied to the source was integrated upstream, and thus the patch is no longer relevant. 5. If any changes were made to the build system (hopefully you'd know from steps 1 and 2) and update the debian/rules and debian/control build dependencies if necessary. 6. Build the new package. Personally I always build in a pbuilder chroot since I use some 3rd party packages on my system and I don't want those interfering. 7. Verify that the new package builds correctly. 8. Run lintian to catch any obvious policy violations. 9. Run 'debdiff old-package.change new-package.change'. Verify that no files have been unintentionally misplaced or removed, and no other inadvertent changes were made. 10. Verify the contents with 'debc new-package.changes'. Ensure no files are zero-length that should not be. 11. Install the new package. Verify it installs/upgrades correctly. Verify that it works normally. If the package makes use of non-trivial pre/post/inst/rm scipts, be sure to test the upgrade paths of those. 12. Check to see if any bugs have been fixed that are currently open in the BTS. If they have been, close them in the debian/changelog. 13. Check the sanity of the diff.gz file. Run 'interdiff -z old-package.diff.gz new-package.diff.gz' and verify any modifications changes are intentional and no junk files have crept in. 14. Check the contents of the .changes file to make sure you are uploading to the correct distribution, the proper bugs closures are listed in the Closes: field, the Maintainer: and Changed-By: fields match, the file is GPG-signed, etc. 15. If any changes were made to correct anything in the packaging along the way, repeat steps 6-13 until satisfied. If your upload needs to be sponsored, be sure to note any special options required when building the package (like 'dpkg-buildpackage -sa -v ...') and be sure to inform your sponsor so he or she builds it correctly. Bug#300953: nice: FTBFS: halts on nice.tools.compiler.console: parsing
Hi Roland, Thanks for your report. Which runtime did you use to try to build? The transcript points to kaffe, but the reports says: pn kaffe | java-virtual-machine Not found. which seems to imply that kaffe is not installed. Version numbers would be useful too. In any case, I am aware that free runtimes have a hard time build recent versions of Nice (which is why the version in Debian is outdated). I'm in the process of testing several options and filing bug reports. If anybody can help, please let me know, that would be very useful, since I'm also quite busy working on upstream. Bug#299875: A different, not kernel related bug
clone 299875 -1 reassign -1 ppp retitle -1 ppp_2.4.3 pppd hangs on re-connect tags -1 - patch tags -1 - security severity -1 important thanks The security issue does not seem relevant to this bug, according to the submitter. Hence reassign to ppp, where downgrading solves the issue. This might be still security related (DoS), but I doubt it. I lowered the severity to important, because only one (albeit important) feature does not work, namly re-connect. So the initial connect works. Since the submitter cannot trigger it manually and has a script for re-connects in place, a possible workaround would be to manually disconnect in time, e.g., before the provider disconnects, and then manually re-connect. Of course, the true problem should still be found here. Greetings Helge -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Bug#252657: dpkg-dev: [arch]-specific Depends broken (see #170575)
On Tue, 2005-03-22 at 14:24 -0600, Adam Heath wrote: On Fri, 18 Mar 2005, Scott James Remnant wrote: So there are three possibilities: * dpkg 1.10.11 did not add support for arch-specific entries in *Depends* and closing 170575 with dpkg 1.10.11's changelog was an error. From what I can tell, this is correct. Support for per-arch BUILD dependencies was added, not general dependencies. Wrong. You can have per-arch *regular* depends. dpkg-gencontrol just strips out the tokens that don't apply for the current arch. parsedep() in controllib.pl supports it, and the same function is used by both the build-depend and depend parsers. However it only checks for the [...] part if $use_arch (the second argument) is true and only removes dependencies that don't match if $reduce_arch (the third argument) is also true. dpkg-checkbuilddeps.pl always sets both arguments to true, so it supports [...] syntax for build dependencies and removes dependencies that don't match the host architecture. dpkg-gencontrol.pl doesn't pass any second or third argument, so they default to undef which is false. This means that for the other dependency fields, [...] syntax isn't supported and dependencies for other architectures are not removed. Changing this would be a simple matter of adding , 1, 1 to the parsedep() call in dpkg-gencontrol, however this sets a precedence that (other than substvars) the dependency lines in debian/control won't necessarily match those in DEBIAN/control -- I don't know if we want to do that or not yet. This makes the shell look for the filename ld -m elf_x86_64 on amd64 which does not exists because the ' -m elf_86_64' part is not interpreted as an option but as part of the filename. Therefore 'configure' does not find the GNU ld and does not set the correct linker options (the option -nostdlib will be missing). This $LD problem was caused by using an old buggy version of 'libtool.m4' when creating the configure script. There are also some cast from 'void*' to 'int' loses precision errors when xmpi is compiled with gcc-4.0 on amd64 With the attached patch 'xmpi' can be compiled on amd64 using gcc-4.0. Bug#300914: perl-base: Errno.pm does not export ERRNOs on hurd-i386
Hi, On Wed, Mar 23, 2005 at 01:58:35PM +1100, Brendan O'Dea wrote: On Tue, Mar 22, 2005 at 06:27:32PM +0100, Michael Banck wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/build$ grep EINPROGRESS /usr/lib/perl/5.8.4/Errno.pm [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/build$ I think this is due to no general glibc inclusion of errno.h in perl-5.8.4/ext/Errno/Errno_pm.PL, only linux is tested for. So I guess either a test for 'gnu' (or whatever perl calls it) should be added or the 'linux' test be generalized for all glibc-using architectures. While there is a specific test for linux, there is also a fallback case which uses cc to determine what errno.h resolves to. Tested to work under linux by changing linux in the test to xinu (or whatever). Ah, I see. The result is a functionally identical Errno.pm (some differences in ordering). If you wouldn't mind could you fetch and unpack the perl source, and try the following please: cd /tmp perl -d $PERL_SRC/ext/Errno_pm.PL c 149 p $cpp c 172 x \%file ^D main::(/home/mbanck/perl-5.8.4/ext/Errno/Errno_pm.PL:5): 5: our $VERSION = 1.09_00; DB1 c 149 main::get_files(/home/mbanck/perl-5.8.4/ext/Errno/Errno_pm.PL:149): 149:open(CPPO,$cpp errno.c |) or 150:die Cannot exec $cpp; DB2 p $cpp cc -E -D_GNU_SOURCE -fno-strict-aliasing -I/usr/local/include - DB3 c 172 main::get_files(/home/mbanck/perl-5.8.4/ext/Errno/Errno_pm.PL:172): 172:close(CPPO); DB4 x \%file 0 HASH(0x845656c) '/usr/include/bits/errno.h' = 1 '/usr/include/errno.h' = 1 '/usr/include/features.h' = 1 '/usr/include/gnu/stubs.h' = 1 '/usr/include/sys/cdefs.h' = 1 'built-in' = 1 'command line' = 1 'stdin' = 1 DB5 The problem is in process_files, the regex on line 59 is not suited for the Hurd's /usr/include/bits/errno.h (where the meat is), as the ERRNOs are defined as follows: #ifndef _HURD_ERRNO #define _HURD_ERRNO(n) ((0x10 26) | ((n) 0x3fff)) #endif [...] #define EINPROGRESS _HURD_ERRNO (36)/* Operation now in progress */ Running /^\s*#\s*define\s+(E\w+)\s+(\d+)/ over that file does not yield any output, contrary to running it over /usr/include/asm-generic/errno.h on Linux. cheers, Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#300962: xscreensaver: Add pretty lock dialogue from Ubuntu?
hi, Am Mittwoch, den 23.03.2005, 00:35 +0100 schrieb Josselin Mouette: Le mardi 22 mars 2005 23:47 +0100, Sven Arvidsson a crit : Package: xscreensaver Version: 4.21-1 Severity: wishlist I'm currently working on a Xft version of that dialog box, but these are quite important changes, and upstream disagrees with them. I'm against using Ubuntu's patches directly, as the result isn't configurable at all and it doesn't have the new login button. i'm really happy to see that so many people like my little hack, but i'd like to point out that its really only a hack and isnt planned to survive the next release in ubuntu, its an interim solution for hoary until a safe implementation for gnome is found, since thats the desired way to go for us. it seems Josselin had the same idea i had, since all i did was to pick a themeing patch from Alan Swanson to make xpm themeing possible and to change all drawing and font code to use the xft equivalent, so the lock code stayed as it is and the possible security issues are kept at a minimum. ubuntu uses version 4.16, i'm not even sure it would apply to 4.21 without bigger changes, since i dont know what code changed between these versions. everything is hardcoded and not configurable but i'll send an additional mail these days with th completed patch attached (its not completely done yet and still has some rough edges), its probably a good base for ideas for a new implementation, but i fully agree with Josselin that a configurable variant and even a new login button would be better. i for myself decided to wait for the gnome screensaver and not to put more work into this hack then absolutely necessary for ubuntu hoary. ciao oli signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#297806: util-vserver: FTBFS in experimental
Some further notes about util-vserver's failure to build from source: * dietlibc-dev on hppa fails to define O_FOLLOW and O_LARGEFILE. Adding these to CFLAGS allows util-vserver to build until it fails to link, because the linking looks for /usr/lib/diet/lib-hppa instead of /usr/lib/diet/lib-parisc, which dietlibc-dev provides. I believe, but have not tested (since it would require root) that if that is fixed in dietlibc, util-vserver will build on hppa. * Similarly to hppa, everything should work on mipsel after dietlibc-dev provides /usr/lib/diet/lib-mipsel instead of /usr/lib/diet/lib-mips (or after libtool is changed to use the .../lib-mips directory). * Steve Langasek reported on IRC that adding -mv8 to CFLAGS should make util-vserver build on sparc. This means util-vserver won't work on the oldest sparcs, but we (or the kernel and glibc) don't seem to support them anyway. * m68k shouldn't build util-vserver at all, since dietlib-dev does not exist on that platform. I have mailed the Package-arch-specific maintainers that util-vserver should be added to that file to prevent build daemons from building util-vserver in vain (forgot to Cc Ola, sorry). * I couldn't replicate the build problem on trex.debian.org, which is an s390 machine. I assume the problem was transient. I can provide a patch for debian/rules for conditionally adding arch-specific stuff to CFLAGS, but later tonight or tomorrow. Again, I hope this is helpful. Happy hacking. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#300667: dict: Alternate suggestion
Hi Matt, If the dict client accepted multiple -d flags, users could search a short list of dictionaries on the specified server. That does sound desirable. A quick look at RFC 2229 suggests that the DICT protocol does not permit multiple database names with a single DEFINE command, requiring that the client issue separate requests for each database. That shouldn't be too hard to implement since dict already permits multiple word lookups in a single invocation, and with command pipelining this should not introduce a delay. 3.4. A Note on Virtual Databases of the RFC even suggests such client capabilities: However, sometimes, a client may want to search over some but not all of the databases that a particular server provides. One alternative is for the client to use the SHOW DB command to obtain a list of databases and descriptions, and then (perhaps with the help of a human), select a subset of these databases for an interactive search. Once this selection has been done once, the results can be saved, for example, in a client configuration file. I will look into this further. Bug#277750: Shorten down the Dutch translation of the root password question dialog in package shadow
On Wednesday 23 March 2005 11:48, Christian Perrier wrote: | Please find attached the relevant nl.po file. Could you take care of | shortening it. Maybe we can change it from Beheerderswachtwoord (root): to Wachtwoord voor root:? Hmm, what needs to be shorten is indeed the long description translation more than the short one ok, so how 'long' can the long description be? #. Type: password #. Description #: ../passwd.templates:3 msgid You need to set a password for 'root', the system administrative account. A malicious or unqualified user with root access can have disastrous results, so you should take care to choose a root password that is not easy to guess. It should not be a word found in the dictionary, or a word that could be easily associated with you, like your middle name. A good password will contain a mixture of letters, numbers and punctuation and will be changed at regular intervals. $ voor s). this bit could be dropped if it is to long (loose translation to english: A relatively good way to choose a password is take a long sentence of which you take the first (or second, or last, or...) character of each word, keep punctiation and maybe replace all occurences of a random charater by some special character (e.g. $ instead of s). ) -- Cheers, cobaco (aka Bart Cornelis) 1. Bug#300902: postgresql-common: pg_upgradecluster errors
Hi, ERROR: could not access file /usr/lib/postgresql/lib/plpgsql.so: No such file or directory ERROR: function public.plpgsql_call_handler() does not exist ERROR: function plpgsql_call_handler() does not exist Despite the errors the result of the upgrade seems to be OK so far (at least the data seems to be there). This is really hard to fix, I'm not sure whether it is a good idea just to do a dumb search and replace in the dump stream. Also, it does not occur with my databases, so this might be a corner case. Does this actually hurt in any way? I. e. is the update performed successfully? If so, I would prefer the small annoyance of the error message over fiddling with the dump output. It seems to be just an annoyance, but then I do not use PL/PgSQL. However I'm now reasonably confident that this is the result of this line in (some) old postgresql postinst: /sbin/start-stop-daemon --chuid postgres --name enable_lang --startas /usr/lib/postgresql/bin/enable_lang --start -- plpgsql --all /dev/null 21 || true In version 7.4.7 this is protected by a debconf variable but in version 7.2.1 (from Woody) enable_lang was called unconditionally. The machine where I experienced the problem was installed cca. 3.5 years ago and is tracking unstable nearly daily since then, so it has survived multiple PostgreSQL database upgrades. On a machine installed about 3 months ago (base install from Sarge, then dist-upgraded to Sid before installing any packages), I do not have any references to plpgsql_call_handler in the database dump. I have a feeling that this problem will affect people who originally created their databases under Woody (or before) and upgraded from there, so I think it should be mentioned in README.Debian at least. What may be more important that postgresql 7.4.7-3 puts an explicit dynamic_library_path setting in postgresql.conf that is not updated during the upgrade, and that may cause problems. Ah, right, thanks for this. So it may actually be enough to disable the PL/PGSQL language before the upgrade and enable it again afterwards (if it was enabled before). I have a feeling that this problem will affect people who originally created their databases under Woody (or before) and upgraded from there, so I think it should be mentioned in README.Debian at least. Certainly, I will try again to fix it, and if this cannot be done in a robust way, I just document it. What may be more important that postgresql 7.4.7-3 puts an explicit dynamic_library_path setting in postgresql.conf that is not updated during the upgrade, and that may cause problems.
