Bug#304705: perl: please remove non-standard rename command

In order to fix this bug (#228737), rename must first be dropped from

   one got there first.

Amazing. I cannot imagine that compatibility with most other
GNU/Linux distributions should be less important than who's first?

Hardly amazing. Consider the impact on Debian users, who are used to
the current semantics, if those were to change incompatibly after an
upgrade.

In addition to the inconvenience of command line usage breaking, this
has the potential to break local administrator scripts, possibly
silently.

That being said, Policy does provide ways around such conflicts, the
most appropriate in this case being alternatives.

I've made a note re-visit this issue once sarge is released, and to add
an alternative for /usr/bin/rename if the util-linux maintainer is
interested in doing similar.

A little bit of research could have shown you that either debian-installer or
installation-reports are the proper ones to use. general is just being lazy.

No, that's not true.

The general package is there for people who don't understand all the
details of how a Debian system really works, but still want to report
their bug somehow. Or, perhaps, for people that get confused by the
complexity and the amount of available packages in the Debian BTS.
reportbug offers to file a bug against general if you're unsure,
and that's a good idea.

After all, we want bugreports from people who are not very familiar with
Debian (yet), too -- or, dare I say, especially? -- because those will
help us improve the system's usability. Flaming on them isn't going to
improve the number of those.

I'd very much like to be able to use the perl native 64 bit integer
support. I can use it in C/C++, why not in perl?

Please recompile perl with these defines enabled.

When building the 5.8.0 packages, I attempted to enable -Duse64bitall .

Unfortunately while this worked fine on the 64bit sparc I was developing
the packages on, test builds on i386 and powerpc both failed (in
different ways).

While this may have been fixed in subsequent releases of either perl or
the toolchain, I can't enable it now without breaking the ABI (requiring
all XS modules and programs embedding perl to be rebuilt).

I'll try again the next time the ABI is going to break (probably 5.10.0,
but may be earlier).

Can I request libgpewidget is rebuilt without cairo, removing the

Seems reasonable. I'll make that change.

Can I ask if you are going to upload this soon? To get cairo removed
I need a new libgpewidget upload and need you to request debian-release
to add the new version into sarge. There's only a few days left.

install scripts... or did mkinitrd changed meanwhile, introducing a new

You mean something like the patch below ?
(Not tested yet, want to be sure this is the idea)

I would've uploaded such a fix already, but upstream objects to this because
doing this in userspace instead of in the kernel means losing the other
features of CAP_UNIX -- which are, uh, symlinks and pipes, basically. I'm
not really convinced that symlinks and pipes are important enough for people
who are using existing mounts with uid or gid smashing to warrant shipping

I am obviously biased since I spend a whole night trying to track down this
problem, but I think that people interested in CAP_UNIX will have moved
to kernel 2.6 and cifs. At that point it seems unlikely that kernel 2.4
will be ever fixed, in Debian or in mainline.

It is a very nasty security problem: The server can change the security
model of the client by enabling unix capability ! This can be used to
compromise the client if the server is compromised.

Yes, I certainly agree that it's bad, and I'm really leaning towards the
position that the security implications for users upgrading from woody
outweigh upstream's desire for the other features to Just Work. Even
*those* are a behavior change, and arguably not an automatic win for all
users.

One option would be to check if the host run a 2.4 kernel or a 2.6 kernel
and only apply the correction for 2.4 kernel. (It is my understanding
 that 2.6 kernels do not have this problem, though I did not try);

Well, most people using 2.6 kernels are likely to be using cifs instead of
smbfs anyway (due to smbfs's general bitrot in 2.6 last I looked at it), so
I'm not sure that addresses upstream's objections.

imho there's only one reason for this, namely, to cater for legacy

There's no reason why passwords should be limited to 8 characteres

allows for a much higher password length.

ACK, and on our systems, about the first thing I do is upping the

Now after I updated my server (sarge) also the server cron stops working
properly.

I made many tests by downgrading glibc and/or libldap2 without success.
Now I'm on the end of my latine. (I hope this is also understandable in
english and not only in german.)

The only think what I can do is to programm my own cron to fix this
issue. Cron is a very important service which HAS to work properly. It
is strange that this bug might be in a library arround but only cron is
affected. All other thinks works very well together.

Funny, the cron was not updated in the periode when the problem
was first noticed.

Any suggestions?

Regards

I think that it may be happening due to buggy X11 driver or some strange

Bug#307003: Eric bashed my head

2005-05-29 Thread Andrzej Mendel
Eric bashed my head for claiming this bug is done when it's still a
problem. I think we could:
1: Call it a feature. This would be quite redmondish, I think:)
2: Make postinst spit out a warning message (something like You need to
restart Firefox after an upgrade) if it detects there are FF instances
running. Some users will notice it, but most won't.
3: Or maybe should upgrade fail if Firefox is running. This could be
quite irritiating, but would surely solve this bug.

Bug#253147: eroaster: The bug is still there

2005-05-29 Thread Cesar Martinez Izquierdo
Package: eroaster
Version: 2.2.0-0.8-2
Followup-For: Bug #253147

Hi, note that I don't use eroaster anymore, but I've just checked
again this bug (to close it if needed), and I've found that
the bug is still there.

I will describe the bug again:
When I execute eroaster, the main window doesn't fit horizontally
on my screen. I use a 1024x768 resolution.
While I can resize the vertical size of the window, I can't change
the horizontal size.

The only workaround I've found is to maximize the window (then it fits
in the screen), but if I restore the window, I got a too wide window
again.

I've deleted my .eroaster directory but this doesn't change anything.

Note that this is a new machine with a new, fresh Debian installation.
When I reported the bug last year, I was also able to reproduce the bug
in two different machines. Therefore, it is strange for me that you
can't reproduce it...

Bug#311151: Cronjob should fail silently if /etc/storebackup.d/ does not exist

Package: storebackup
Severity: normal

If the storebackup Debian package is removed but not purged, errors are
generated daily from cron due to failed attempts to look into the no
longer existing directory /etc/storebackup.d/ .

The fix (I believe) is to have the cronjob check if that directory exist
and fail silently if not.

The /boot part is wrong. I had to remove it to get grub to boot
 memtest86+.

Well, the example assumes your /boot is on your root partition. If
you have a separate /boot partition (which should not be needed on
recent hardware, afaik), your grub root is /boot, and yes, the
example has to be modified accordingly.

I should probably write a note together with the example :)

Comments/Problems:

I built this machine for a friend, using a Sempron 2400+ on an Asus
A7V400-MX MoBo and 512MB of Kingmax RAM. HD was a 80GB Maxtor, DVD-Rom
an LG. I wanted to debianize it just for fun, before installing
Windows2000 for my pal.

The install went good, all parts were correctly recognized but I
couldn't access outside network.
I use a Zyxel P623-ME as ADSL Modem/Router, linked to a hub where other
2 machines are connected.
After the reboot base-config started looking for apt-get files but
couldn't access the network, so I checked /etc/resolv.conf but my
nameservers were there.

In the meanwhile other machines on the LAN could access the internet.
I checked my routing table (# route -n) but it was just the same as
other machines.
The VIA_RhineII module for LAN was correctly loaded (fact is, I could
ping other machines on LAN and get pinged, but couldn't ping google).

I installed Xandros OCE using the same values for eth0, and it worked
flawlessly. Windows2000 worked too (altough it took almost 4 hours), so
I exclude any hardware or LAN configuration problems.

I know this is not the best report ever, and I don't have the machine
anymore to run more tests, but hope this can help.

Thanks for your attention!

Bug#228971: It's buggy Javascript

2005-05-29 Thread Andrzej Mendel
It's not a problem of firefox I think. Opera takes insane amounts of CPU
power on this page too. It's just a case of horrible scripts and maybe
not optimized Javascript interpreting. On slower machines it can make
Firefox virtualy irresponsible, on my P4 1.6GHz it makes it veeeryyy
slow, but it is possible to close the page and save the day.
Methinks we can close this bug. Mozilla Firefox displays a dialog with
an option to disable CPU intensive scripts if it detects one.

Nice!

Please give us your point of view : would you include the static
build in your packages or should we ship with our own build of

I wanted to upload a newer release to experimental this weekend and

I'll include static libs on next upload, most probably.

Well the german translation could be better. First I'd call the graphics
menu Grafik and not Grafiken cause this means somenthing like
Images. Then please do not call the ok buttons übernehmen. This
means apply, so just call them ok.
Finally the race start message has a fault too, because laden is the
infinitive. First person singular would be lade. So Lade Abfahrt, bitte
warten... would be correct.

PS: It's nice that good old tuxracer is now again in developement!

Bug#310619: Diagnostic - Postgres dependency

2005-05-29 Thread yan
This is due to the set of schema updates from the 3.3.0 release.

From the /etc/request-tracker3.4/upgrade/3.3.0/schema.Pg file:

ALTER TABLE Transactions ALTER COLUMN ObjectType SET NOT NULL;

SET NOT NULL is a syntax that is not recognised in Postgres 7.2.

The syntax seems to have appeared at some point in the 7.3 release. Unsure
which exact revision.

Bestpractical.com states that rt works on pg 7.3

Hope this helps!

Bug#311155: tuareg-mode: error when loading an .ml file

Package: tuareg-mode

Severity: normal

When opening the following file:

tuareg report an error:
void-variable font-lock-preprocessor-face

It seem that the problem come from 03_fontlock.dpatch that make tuareg
mode not creating this variable if it do not exist already. I include a
patch (I could also just put it into the svn repositories if you which).

Bug#310732: dropbear does not work on low entropy systems

2005-05-29 Thread Dmitry Golubev
yes, but do you suggest to switch the Debian packages to use
 /dev/urandom by default? I don't think it's a good idea, most systems
with Debian installed should provide enough entropy through /dev/random.
A solution could be to have dropbear first check /dev/random, and if it
blocks, to fall back to /dev/urandom.

I am nowhere near understanding the differences between the two files, but
your solution seems good. I spent half of a day trying to find why it does
not work...

Thanks,
Dmitry

Well, the example assumes your /boot is on your root partition. If
you have a separate /boot partition (which should not be needed on
recent hardware, afaik), your grub root is /boot, and yes, the
example has to be modified accordingly.

Ah, yes, that's true. Silly me.

I should probably write a note together with the example :)

A comment in the example, saying something like If your /boot is on its
own partition, remove /boot from the 'kernel' line below. would be
excellent. Or providing two versions of the example, with and
without /boot in the path.

Hi,

Your package is failing to build with the following error:

I think you want to change this line in debian/rules:
mv $(d)/`pwd`/$(d)/usr/share/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8 $(d)/usr/lib/ruby
to:
mv $(d)/usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.8 $(d)/usr/lib/ruby

PS: You're build depending on libmysqlclient-dev which is a
virtual packages provided by libmysqlclient12-dev and
libmysqlclient10-dev. I suggest you change it to
libmysqlclient12-dev | libmysqlclient-dev or something.

Please see bug#306160 for an example of situations that can be caused by
this.

 I agree.

I've checked and I think I fixed it in CVS.
There was an error-check status that was missing in d-devlibdeps:

 -DEPENDS=$DEPENDS $(objdump -p ${A} |sed -n 's/^.*NEEDED *//p')
 +DEPENDS=$DEPENDS $(set -o pipefail; objdump -p ${A} |sed -n

Wauw, that's clever. I didn't even know about that flag...

Bug#311160: gcc-4.0: can't coexist cleanly with an earlier version of gcc (libgcc1 upgrade required)

2005-05-29 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
Package: gcc-4.0
Version: 4.0.0-8
Severity: normal
Tags: experimental

gcc-4.0 from experimental depends on libgcc1 (= 1:4.0.0-8). Thus installing
gcc-4.0 requires upgrading libgcc1 to the 4.0 version. This can potentially
break earlier versions of gcc that are installed on the same machine (e.g.,
gcc-3.3 or gcc-3.4), since they also make use of libgcc1.

Is it possible to make a separate version of the libgcc1 package and library

Bug#298249: whatever the package is, the problem occurs when using cupsys

2005-05-29 Thread Malte Schmidt-Tychsen
Hi,

I forgot to add that this might very well be a problem with gs-esp, but
it happens (and I can reproduce it, I hope You can as well, just try to
scan a couple pages with graphics, convert them to pdf and print them)
under cupsys. So I can't use cupsys. I wouldn't know how to reproduce
this problem using only gs-esp.

So please relate this problem to the gs-esp people as the cupsys
maintainer so they can fix it before the Sarge release or make cupsys use
a different gs package that doesn't have this problem. IMHO not being
able to print ps or pdf documents larger than a couple hundred kb is a
serious flaw.

Thx,

Malte Schmidt-Tychsen

Bug#311090: fglrx-kernel: tarball could not be found

2005-05-29 Thread Javier Kohen
Hello Eduard,

El sb, 28-05-2005 a las 17:23 +0200, Eduard Bloch escribi:
 #include hallo.h
  nada:/usr/src# module-assistant --verbose --text-mode --kernel-dir

There is no such package in Debian. Show me your source or send me your
binary package file (fglrx-kernel-src_...all.deb), otherwise I cannot
 help you.

You're right, I just noticed that the package added the fglrx-kernel-src
definition for module-assistant. I thought it came in m-a's package, but
it came from Flavio Stanchina's repository.

However, the plex86-kernel-src definition, which does come with m-a,
should have the same problem. Should I report a bug to
fglrx-kernel-src's upstream to rename it to -kernel-source, or will the
fix I posted in my other mail be added to fglrx? After all, this is a
regression, as it used to work a few versions ago with the same version
of the module.

Thanks,

Looks like dbp-get loses file permissions.

Unfortunately, darcs does not store file permissions (yet), so there's
not much I can do about this one.

darcs get -- which is used to check out the initial copy -- does have an
option that says --set-scripts-executable, which could address this
particular problem. I could make this optional in dbp-get.

  TLACMD: darcs
(the usual output and asking for email twice, snip)

Take a look at the darcs manual (www.darcs.net); you can eliminate that
with a ~/.darcs/author file.

Bug#311164: CAN-2005-0757: DoS possibility in xattrs handling on 64 bits archs

2005-05-29 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: kernel-source-2.4.27
Severity: important
Tags: security

Quoting from http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2005-294.html:
A flaw in offset handling in the xattr file system code backported to
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 was fixed. On 64-bit systems, a user who
can access an ext3 extended-attribute-enabled file system could cause
a denial of service (system crash). This issue is rated as having a
moderate security impact (CAN-2005-0757).

I couldn't find further information on whether this is already fixed
in 2.4.27, do you have further information?

You don't like my cfengine script? I wrote it specifically for you!
it's not that I don't like it, but that I don't think a cfengine script is
the right approach (sorry):
- I don't think you can assume that all (gnome) users of desktop-profiles
have cfengine installed - using it to generate the necessary changes is
  definately suboptimal
- the cfengine script doesn't move over management of non-default
configuration sources to desktop-profiles, which means if you have any
such beasts, you'll either be juggling 2 ways of managing configuration
sources, or have to generate the necessary metadata manually. The
conversion script will generate the necesaary metadat automatically

I am interested in what you are cooking - maybe I can help spot possible
problems, or maybe I can even learn from it :-)
sure, many eyes make all bugs shallow and all that :-)

current state of the conversion script can be seen at

Bug#303273: jack does not support '' in names

2005-05-29 Thread Alain Cabiran
Hello,

and Thanks, Bien vu ! as we say in french (a kind of well done !)

I added small strings in print commands (fortunately print is quite the
same in every languages)

cwd is : /usr/local/shared/music/jack-9d0e440c
last_of_new : Héritage des Celtes Live

/usr/local/shared/music is a fat32 (vfat) filesystem,
the only way i found to share read/writes partitions between
linux and windows. i set base_dir to home and everything worked fine.

so i think you can close the bug without modifying jack or maybe
doing something like s//'/g in titles/names if you want, but is it
portable between systems ? i don't know.

Great thanks, and best regards.

Well, this works here without any problems.

Can you edit the file /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/jack_utils.py
and go to line 94, and then insert 2 statements:

 print cwd
 print last_of_new

so the code should look like this:

 if os.path.exists(last_of_new):
 error(destination directory already exists: + last_of_new)
 os.rename(cwd, last_of_new)
 print cwd
 print last_of_new
 os.chdir(last_of_new)

 Also,
  - what file system are you using?
  - what is your ~/.jack3rc? Presumably it doesn't exist or is empty?

patch supplied, please make max_vcard_field_length a bit larger,
I've seen some vcard photos up to 50kb in length, maybe 64kb is a nice
 'round' number.

Also please add the ALTER TABLE command to db-setup.mysql

Bug#304735: LDBM and 2.2.x

2005-05-29 Thread Toni Mueller

Hello,

fwiw, I have 2.2.23 with ldbm backend running w/o a hitch on OpenBSD,
but breaking down completely on Debian almost sarge.

Esp. I can browse the directory and find whatever I want, but don't see
these same records when I use search (with gq or ldapsearch, that
is).

Also, looking at http://www.openldap.org/software/release/changes.html
suggests that a number of important bugs have been killed between
2.2.23 and now, although that might be too late for sarge.

Btw, aren't there any regression test suites to run before promoting
such packages, and/or can we probably move to having the debian/* stuff
in a publicly accessible CVS or something (I prefer ARCH), to be able
to recreate older packages at any date (analogous to the BSD ports
system)?

Thanks for listening!

Best,
--Toni++

I don't know the cause of this problem. I wouldn't even object to remove

this.

Btw, aren't there any regression test suites to run before promoting
such packages, and/or can we probably move to having the debian/* stuff
in a publicly accessible CVS or something (I prefer ARCH), to be able
to recreate older packages at any date (analogous to the BSD ports
 system)?

Look here:

Never mind that last question - I see now that of course they are
different versions. Hmm, still a mystery to me.

I strongly disagree. I know what I'm losing with libsane as it is
today, I don't know what I'm going to lose with this hackish patch.

Ok, so let's go with a modified version of libusb.

For the release managers, I have uploaded a fixed version of libusb to

And wrt performances, insert comment about Gentoo here ;)
My tests show me an improvement of 7% with some USB 1.1 devices and 19%
for some USB 2.0 devices. I don't found that insignificant.

Bug#249157: Re: Bug#249157: audacity: Should be built with ALSA support

Unfortunately, compiling with portaudio-v19 enabled would break things
for many users. Audacity's portaudio-v19 support is experimental and
incomplete. PortAudio v19 is only available as a development snapshot,
and at the moment it does not support all of Audacity's features.

Does that still hold? The statement is a year old.

I will also look into providing a separate audacity-alsa binary package,
as an alternative to the stable portaudio-v18 package. (I would welcome
 a patch to provide this.)

Patching that in isn't easy because the package uses cdbs, which
doesn't seem to be geared towards building multiple binary packages
from the same source while configuring differently. You can see the
abiword package, for reference how to do this in a conventionally
built package.

Recording functionality and particularly duplex support is extremely
limited in Audacity when using OSS.

Can you elaborate on this? Audacity should have no problems recording
in full duplex with most OSS drivers (or ALSA drivers and OSS emulation).

Well, for example, recording from the digital input of my Zoltrix
Nightingale Pro 6 doesn't work at all without ALSA support compiled
into audacity.

Greetings
Marc

  Description : Unionfs Hurd translator

Unionfs is a long-standing effort for a Hurdish unionfs translator.
Gianluca Guida has recently picked it up again and added stowfs and
write-support, so it is approaching basic usability now.

Binary package will probably be 'hurd-trans-unionfs', pending a Hurd
translator naming scheme convention (any suggestions?)
