Is wmii stable enough yet? Is there any reason people would prefer wmi over wmii? Sorry I didn't get to this yet. wmi is not maintained any longer and quite buggy (mostly smaller annoying ones). wmii do have it's share of bugs too. There should be roughly 2 major releases/year, and additionally minor bugfix releases of the current major version as they are needed. That means that after the release yesterday many bugs will be discovered due to the broader audience, which will result in a bugfix release soon. IMHO It is already mature enough for unstable. wmii is different then wmi and requires some learning in the beginning. All in all one can emulate the wmi behaviour close enough that I think all/most people will switch sooner or later. I don't think the remaining ones justify to add an unmaintained, upstream death, buggy package into debian. There is an unofficial debian repo for them: deb http://wegi.net/debian unstable/ I'll take a look when I get a chance. If someone beats me to it that's fine too. Bug#311397: resolved on my PC
Thanks Stephane, It was a subtle problem, which I was aware of before I uploaded the package. Originally the package was called libcommoncpp2-1.0-0c102, but the soname changed (which I didn't notice) and uploaded libcomoncpp2-1.0-0c102 (1.3.10-1). Since the soname had changed I needed to rename, which is where libcommoncpp2-1.3 (1.3.10-2) came from. I uploaded this next version quicky, but didn't include a conflicts for the rare case that someone (like yourself) did download the 1.3.10-1 version of the package for the couple of days it was in the archive. Anyway I have now uploaded a new version which does have the conflicts statement and should ;-) work correctly for everyone. Thanks for your reports. Bug#311557: appears to be present in 1.9-9 (sid) only
On Wed, Jun 01, 2005 at 08:01:37PM -0700, Steve Langasek wrote: Well, this bug is now merged with 262395, but they seem to be opposite sides of the same bugfix; the dependency on efmt is a result of the changes in 1.9-9 that were supposed to fix 262395/306595. I don't really know anything about fmtutil (other than that it's a chronic RC irritant). What's the variable here that causes some systems to need .fmt and some to need .efmt? It doesn't seem to be the version of tetex packages installed, at least. Supposing for the moment we're out of time before release, which version would we want to go with -- the 1.9-8 version that assumes .fmt, or the 1.9-9 version that assumes .efmt? AFAIK the choice of enhanced or normal tex engine is related to the use of the new NTS primitives, so it's due to the specific sheet (xmltex in this case). Tetex is compatible with both engines, and there are other sheets that use just one of them or both. Someone who knows better the inner requirements of xmltex should have a guess... I'm a poor texnician, not a wizard :) I can just guess that probably etex is the way to go, but postinst needs a decent fix as suggested in my previous followups, in any case. -- Francesco P. Bug#310271: [Debian, phpLDAPAdmin] Any news about #310271?
Hello Fabio, Sorry for my late answer, I was on a business trip. I have reinstalled again the old state to check the condition. It is a dependency problem with the packages. I have already installed a running apache2 without php4 and libapache2-mod-php4. Due to the dependency of phpLDAPAdmin to php4 the apt-get wanted to install libapache-mod-php4 and not libapache2-mod-php4. Because libapache-mod-php4 depends on apache and not apache2, the package management tried to install apache. Now, I do not know if this is my fault or a dependency problem of some packages. Bug#311610: split libgmp3 into two packages
Package: libgmp3 Tags: etch, sid With the planned/necessary C++ ABI change all C++ library packages have to be renamed (or upgraded to a new upstream version with a new package name). libgmp3 currently contains the gmp library and the C++ bindings in another library. 93 depending packages have to be rebuilt, although only a minor part of them uses the C++ bindings. We have to rename this library this time, but we should separate the C++ bindings in it's own package, so that for the next C++ ABI change (if there is one again), not all 93 packages need to be rebuilt. An alternative to the renaming might be to explictly conflict with the versions of all depending packages, which need the C++ bindings, but you'll have to find out that dependency. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#311491: slapd stops functioning almost completely if a CPU consuming process runs at the same time
On Thu, 2 Jun 2005, Torsten Landschoff wrote: Hi Ulrich, [...] That's unlikely to happen. And, BTW: I guess this bug is also a problem with the current linux kernel. Somebody on linux-kernel pointed out that he got 10% CPU usage by having 3 processes talk to each other in a ring inside an endless loop. For some reason the scheduler thinks that no process is ready to run. Hmm, possibly there is a problem with the scheduler itself. However, as I have written, the problem didn't show up with woody and a 2.6.7 kernel. I have applied the tag sarge because of this - why was it removed? I noticed that in all operating system configurations where the problem arises (that is, when using sarge), the slapd fails to spawn additional threads when a query is made (which it does when using woody). Maybe here something is wrong? What does top say about your CPU usage? I don't see anything conspicuous - if I start a CPU consuming process, it gets 99%, and slapd almost doesn't show up. Talking about severities: We will not delay sarge because slapd has a performance problem for one user. I am respecting your decision, of course, and I understand completely that time is short now. However, though I have not tested everything, the bug really doesn't seem to be specific to any aspect of our slapd configuration, which is simple and standard. (Please tell me if I you think that the problem doesn't arise in every slapd configuration.) And it is not just a performance problem - as I have written, the slapd needs more than 2000 x the amount of time it would need without a concurrent process. For all practical purposes: It just hangs. I didn't exaggerate to make it seem more important. Don't just believe me: This can be reproduced very easily. Bug#304734: mouseemu prevents pbbuttonsd to work
Hi, I can confirm this same behavior with an older version of pbbuttonsd (0.6.3a). The problem only started after upgrading mouseemu from 0.12-1 to 0.15-2. Order of starting mouseemu and pbbuttonsd does not matter. Starting mouseemu 0.15-2 'steals' the function key events from pbbuttonsd, stopping mouseemu 0.15-2 seems to pass them back (I haven't actually logged events in pbbuttonsd; the brightness and volume adjust just starts working again). 0.12-1 doesn't interfere at all (I just tried a locally compiled version) but suffers from scrolling and pasting bugs. The code differences between 0.12-1 and 0.15-2 are quite extensive; I will start merging in changes into 0.12-1 to see when it starts to break. Package: apt Version: 0.5.28.6 Severity: wishlist When new packages are installed the apt-get displays also fields from Recommends and Suggests. Didn't I already have MTA ... ... Interrupts this task, Goes and opens another terminal to ... check if one is installed... ... Yes - Hm, I can ignore this one. And so on for all the rest of the Recommends and Suggests. SUGGESTION: As apt-get already resolves the Depends, it could as well process also Recommends and Suggests so that only those packages that are not already installed in system are displayed. Bug#310642: A debug that outputs the values...
I rebuilt the code from the Debian source archive (version 2.5.9-9), and changed StatHist.c line 93 to this: { double shv = statHistVal(H, 0); double answer = floor(0.99L + shv - min); int iAnswer = (int) answer; if (iAnswer != 0) { // ### Stephen Blackheath fprintf(debug_log, Bug 310642 assertion values:\n); fprintf(debug_log, H-min = %f\n, H-min); fprintf(debug_log, H-max = %f\n, H-max); fprintf(debug_log, H-capacity = %d\n, H-capacity); fprintf(debug_log, H-scale = %f\n, H-scale); fprintf(debug_log, statHistVal(H, 0) = %f\n, shv); fprintf(debug_log, answer = %f\n, answer); fprintf(debug_log, iAnswer = %d\n, iAnswer); fflush(debug_log); } assert(iAnswer == 0); } Some script is obviously successfully restarting the daemon now, so it *appears* to be reliable, unlike before where the script sometimes failed to restart. Here are the relevant excerpts from cache.log - I have no idea what these numbers mean. A wild guess - perhaps it should be floor(0.99f + statHistVal(H,0) - min) ?? 0.99L seems like nonsense to me. - 2005/06/01 06:29:33| storeDirWriteCleanLogs: Starting... 2005/06/01 06:29:35| Finished. Bug#311307: Design error - should not be TCP
severity 311307 wishlist thanks On Mon, May 30, 2005 at 05:34:27PM -0500, Adam Majer wrote: This is supposedly an action game and yet it uses TCP connections. Games should use UDP connections *always*. TCP is unreliable (in games) and undesirable protocol to use. TCP is for streaming data, like files, audio, movies, etc.. The only disadvantage of UDP over TCP in games is that it is more difficult to write an engine around UDP since packet order must be maintained in the engine. I don't think that is an excuse! - Adam PS. Important because it makes the entire game experience worse. For other examples of games where TCP wrecked it see xshipwars. Hello Adam. Did you play netpanzer at all? I played it many times even with 20 players on map and there were NOT any problems with speed. Here are some quotes from my talk with upstream maintainer: 12:18 MatzeB TCP is unreliable 12:18 MatzeB that guy has no idea what he is talking about 12:18 MatzeB the whole idea about TCP is that it is reliable 12:19 MatzeB (you use UDP if you can accept unreliablilty...) 12:19 MatzeB before he has hard facts or knows what he is talking about I won't discuss that 12:19 fEnIo it is possible to use udp and have reliability but you have to implement it yourself... so in fact you end up with tcp 12:20 MatzeB well you don't end up exactly with tcp depending on your needs 12:20 MatzeB as you could decide to not resend certain packets when they're missing 12:20 MatzeB (like updating panzer positions, when you send 5 updates and miss an update in between in won't matter) 12:20 fEnIo anyway... I'll lower severity of this bug and try to discuss with him 12:20 MatzeB but netpanzer runs well enough with TCP IMO 12:21 MatzeB I don't have any figures or experiences that TCP has any bad effect here 12:21 MatzeB so I won't do all the trouble implementing an UDP protocol 12:21 MatzeB I already did that in other games (planeshift) and know what a pain it is 12:21 MatzeB and how many bugs you can have in it 12:22 MatzeB just copypaste this irc log if you want 12:22 MatzeB and close that bug 12:22 fEnIo well it could probably use less bandwidth with udp but I also think netpanzer works great with tcp 12:22 MatzeB it also won't take less bandwith with udp 12:22 MatzeB (you might save a few bytes, but nothing to talk about) 12:22 fEnIo it hardly depends on what do we really needs 12:22 MatzeB all you could win is improved latency over bad connections 12:23 fEnIo ok nevermind... I'll paste this talk to bugreport 12:23 fEnIo all in all if he wants to move to udp then patches are welcome ;) 12:23 MatzeB probably :) 12:24 fEnIo ok thanks for comments 12:24 MatzeB if he can show me that it really works better with UDP and has a clean and bugfree implementation then yes 12:24 MatzeB np 12:26 MatzeB apart from that I don't understand why people are filling such a thing as debian bugreport... 12:26 MatzeB I doubt any packager would patch the protocol to use UDP instead of TCP just for debian... 12:40 ziberpunk MatzeB, he's not saying tcp is unreliable 'per se', but for games 12:41 MatzeB and still that doesn't make any sense 12:41 MatzeB it's still reliable 12:41 ziberpunk MatzeB, well, it's true that most games uses UDP 12:41 ziberpunk MatzeB, yes, that's true 12:41 MatzeB I know 12:41 ziberpunk MatzeB, I agree that netpanzer works well with TCP 12:41 MatzeB but this report doesn't contain any facts why TCP is bad for netpanzer 12:41 MatzeB it's just unbacked statements 12:41 ziberpunk MatzeB, yes, that's the point 12:42 ziberpunk MatzeB, performance data or bottlenecks would give more credibility :) 12:43 MatzeB or just a few empirical statements ala the game lags like crazy for me 12:43 fEnIo I'll just decrease severity to wishlist 12:43 MatzeB (or even better with measured ping to the server and some estimations or comparisons with other games and similar ping) 12:45 ziberpunk MatzeB, yes, the statements seems based on experiences with other games, and that doesn't worth rewriting the net code So as you can see there won't be probably rewrite of net code. Bug#278810: Status update
Hi Folks! Just for the record, PostgreSQL 8.0 packages with the new architecture and structure are in experimental and will be uploade to unstable soon. The new package libpq-dev now contains the client-side library development files and is enough to build all client applications. I don't know the structure of Slony-1, but if it does not just operate on the client side, but installs a server library, then you need postgresql-server-dev-8.0 (or -7.4, it's probably best to build one slony deb for each version). So far I did not actually use the server dev package for anything, so if it misses something or needs improvements, please bug me about it. Santiago Vila wrote: On Wed, 1 Jun 2005, Nils Gundelach wrote: Hello, Alexander Wirt told me that this is a problem with the initialisation of the DB and postfix. Solution: edit postfix main.cf smtpd_policy_service_timeout = 240s It works fine for me. Thanks a lot for the info. Do you mean that using such line in main.cf the problem go away completely and you don't have to restart gld anymore? yes. Do you consider this issue solved, or do you want me to add a note about this in README.Debian? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#311637: qmail (with qmail-scanner) does not restart if LANG/LC_* is set

Bug#311546: postgresql-7.4: changing postgres uid breaks pg_ctrcluster
retitle 311546 postgresql-common: pg_ctlcluster should verify that the cluster uid/gid exist severity 311546 minor reassign postgresql-common thanks Hi Alban! [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2005-06-01 20:17 +0200]: pg_ctrlcluster get the postmaster uid and gid from the cluster. It was 31:32 when i created it. I had deleted and recreated the postgres account to update it (you removed its shell and maybe other things so not to miss any part i used the postinst adduser command to recreate it). The new uid/gid where (fake ones) 122:122. D'oh, please don't do such things. System account IDs must not be modified since that breaks all files that are owned by them. You can modify all the other properties (GECOS, shell, whatever) without any problem, but if you change the IDs, you also have to change the owner and group of all files which are owned by the account, and additionally stop all running servers before (they also run under the postgres account). Thus running the postgresql-7.4 init script fired pg_ctrcluster which retrieved the old uid/gid from the cluster (31:32) and changed the process uid/gid to match the cluster one before calling pg_ctl. pg_ctl was running with an inexistant account. Yes, this can lead to all sorts of weirdnesses. I will add a test to pg_ctlcluster that will refuse to start the postmaster if the account is not valid to prevent such failures in the future. And in pg_ctl , l.114 : if [ `$PGPATH/pg_id -u` -eq 0 ] then echo $CMDNAME: cannot be run as root 12 (...) Right, this could be made much more robust with if [ `$PGPATH/pg_id -u` = 0 ] echo This user does not exists . You may have changed the uid of the account used to create this database cluster. You should dump, drop and reinit a the cluster. fi I will implement something like that in pg_ctlcluster in Perl. Maybe all this is too much for a special case which may not appear often as the problem never arise as far as i searched for this error. Please close this bug if you think so. Well, I will close it when I added the check to make the error more obvious.
