Bug#312183: kturtle: Inappropriate characters in logo file names produces failures in locate and other tools
Package: kturtle Version: 4:3.3.2-3 Severity: important Tags: l10n Some of the file names in this package are in the Latin-1 character encoding scheme: $ ls -1 /usr/share/apps/kturtle/examples/fr_FR | iconv -f latin1 -t utf8 carrogo enroulogo exemple1.logo triangle.logo If the user's locale is one which uses some other character encoding scheme, these can generate incorrect results in other system tools, for example coreutils and findutils. This is because the 'character forms a leading byte of an invalid multibyte character sequence in UTF-8. The effect of this is that such filenames fail to match the glob characters ? and *. Essentially, ls, find and locate (among other things) generate the wrong result for these files. If the user modifies their locale to an ISO-8859-1 locale, then these filenames are not a problem. However, I think it's inappropriate for Debian packages to use filenames that cause other tools (also from Debian packages) to work incorrectly:- $ ( find . ; echo ===; find . -name '*' ) | iconv -f latin1 -t utf8 . ./triangle.logo ./carrogo ./enroulogo ./exemple1.logo === . ./triangle.logo ./exemple1.logo $ /bin/ls --ignore='*' | iconv -f latin1 -t utf8 carrogo enroulogo -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.10 Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages kturtle depends on: ii kdelibs4 4:3.3.2-6.1 KDE core libraries ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libc62.3.2.ds1-22GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0c102 2.7.0-7 client library to control the FAM ii libgcc1 1:3.4.3-13 GCC support library ii libice6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libidn11 0.5.13-1.0 GNU libidn library, implementation ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-1 PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt3:3.3.4-3 Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libsm6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 X Window System Session Management ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.6-5 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxrender1 1:0.8.3-1 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xlibs4.3.0.dfsg.1-14 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii zlib1g 1:1.2.2-4 compression library - runtime -- no debconf information

Package: rezound Version: 0.12.0beta-1 Followup-For: Bug #310134 This particular character in the filename also breaks find, locate and ls when the user's locale is UTF-8. If it took over three years to notice that on ppc, and does not cause you to loose data or I can't comment. I do not have (physical) access to a powerpc machine, can you send a patch? I will try to see what is wrong, but after I get back from work (in about 9 hours) Or at least a strace? The information you are providing is a little scarce will do that also when I get back to do anything about it. Bug#312189: bind9 does uses IPv6 for lookups on a non ipv6 host
Package: bind9 Version: 1:9.2.4-1 Severity: normal At the moment our server bind9 server is trying to do some name resolving over IPv6. This fails, and I think this leads to a very verbose log, with lines like: Jun 5 07:23:13 sd01 kernel: ICMPv6 NA: ndisc_send_ns() failed to allocate an skb. While the above line looks more like a kernel bug, from my observations it seems fairly likely that it is being triggered via binds behaviour. Most of the bind lookups are occuring over IPv4, and are correctly resolving. I don't have any stats about how many are being attempted over IPv6. I assume when the IPv6 lookups fail, bind9 retries over IPv4. I'm sure that it isn't attempting IPv6 for all lookups though, as I believe I would have noticed the performance hit. The server has the following addresses assigned: 2: eth0: BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000 link/ether 00:30:48:70:f3:70 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 192.168.1.103/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global eth0 inet6 fe80::230:48ff:fe70:f370/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever 3: eth1: BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000 link/ether 00:30:48:70:f3:71 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 192.168.13.1/24 brd 192.168.13.255 scope global eth1 inet6 fe80::230:48ff:fe70:f371/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever Is there some way of turning off support for IPv6 in bind9, or even the entire OS? You may read more about this in /usr/share/doc/kernel-patch-2.4-grsecurity/ README.2.4.2x. If you want to apply this patch, please use a vanilla kernel source tree, or please use the modified version for 2.4.27 and hopefully upwards by the kernel-patch-grsecurity2 maintainer (but bugs found only in the latter should not be sent to upstream, but to the Debian BTS). msgstr En raison des rétro-portages (« backports ») et autres décisions d'empaquetage prises par le responsable des paquets « kernel-source » pour les noyaux 2.4.20 et supérieurs, la rustine (« patch ») grsecurity ne pourra plus être appliquée aux noyaux Debian. Bug#309779: gtimer still unstable - freezes randomly, corrupts window
On Tue, 31 May 2005, Russ Allbery wrote: I have no idea what's causing this, and the strace didn't really tell me anything. It looked like gtimer just wasn't getting any X events, but I don't know what would cause that. I'm afraid I'm about at my limits of understanding X and GTK programming here. Yeah, I wasn't expecting you to be able to discover very much from that, and I can't reproduce it on demand. I'll try leaving ltrace running on it and hope that we see something interesting around the time it becomes unresponsive. But regardless, I think I see the erroneous code. Would you be willing to build a new version of the package with the following patch and see if it takes care of the bad window size problem? You can do this with: apt-get build-dep gtimer apt-get source gtimer and then drop this patch into debian/patches/26_309779-bad-size.patch in the unpacked source tree and build with debuild or the like. Yup, that fixes it ;-) Window size no longer changes when the window is destroyed. All the best, Julian -- Julian T. J. Midgley http://www.xenoclast.org/ Cambridge, England. Package: initrd-tools Version: 0.1.81.1 Severity: important Tags: patch While hunting for a solution to my bug #312207, i came accross a problem in module_exists(). The shell replacement in there causes the find statement to search for to much files. This is done within the /lib/debian-installer-startup.d/S40framebuffer-module-linux-x86 script in the 2.6/initrd.gz ramdisk image (creation date 05.03.2005) The modprobe -q fbcon command fails and the loading of modules vesafb or vga16fb leads to blinking of the screen. The only way to get arond was to patch the script just to modprobe vgastate. The modprobe of fbcon still fails, but the screen is readable and the installation process can pursue without any further interrogations. I'm experimenting quite a bit with the debian installer and I'm already a great fan of it !! Fantastic work and I very much appreciate the preseeding function, because this leads to an easy customization. Unfortunately I'm missing a hook to stop the initrd bootup before partitioning. I'm looking for this hook in order to use the installer as a startup for low level maintenance on already installed systems. Maybe this hook exists already, but I wasn't getting too deep into the installers functionality to find out how to interpret the template files. If you need any further information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Package: kernel-patch-suspend2 Version: 2.1.8.9-1 Severity: normal Tags: experimental Hi and thanks for packaging swsups2 for Debian! I've compiled a custom kernel (not the one running at the time of writing!) with swsusp2. I've largely adopted Debian's .config from one of the latest 2.6.11 kernels with few modifications (i.e. deselected prehistoric CD-ROM support and OSS as well as compiled in VESA frame buffer support.) I have NOT changed Debian's heavily modularized design, since I assumed that a Debianized kernel patch was prepared for that. Now, putting the box to sleep works, whle resuming fails. The problem is that it loads the drivers for the attached devices right after the host controller, so the devices are already powered and initialized, then disconnected again, reconnected to ehci and reinitialized. Bug#312182: bastille: patch for the bug
Package: bastille Version: 1:2.1.1-11 Followup-For: Bug #312182 i'm including the patch for the above bug about grub configuration file. However, as i see the BootSecurity module does not work beyond this bug. The patch replaces GLOBAL variable for configuration file for debian as menu.lst and changes its path to its original location as /boot/grub/menu.lst in several files. But being correctly working in InteractiveBastille it does not edit it and set a grub password. The temporary file /root/GRUB-PASSWORD cannot be created and an md5ed password could not be obtained. Thus grub configuration still does not work. I'm not sure if we open an other bug report for this insidence or continue from here. Well, patch is attached. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-1-686 Locale: LANG=tr_TR, LC_CTYPE=tr_TR (charmap=ISO-8859-9) Versions of packages bastille depends on: ii libcurses-perl1.08b-1Curses interface for Perl ii perl [perl5] 5.8.4-8Larry Wall's Practical Extraction -- no debconf information diff -ruN bastille-2.1.1/Bastille/API.pm bastille-2.1.1.new/Bastille/API.pm --- bastille-2.1.1/Bastille/API.pm 2005-06-06 10:17:29.0 +0300 +++ bastille-2.1.1.new/Bastille/API.pm 2005-06-06 09:47:06.0 +0300 @@ -771,7 +771,7 @@ $GLOBAL_FILE{inittab}=/etc/inittab; $GLOBAL_FILE{lilo.conf}=/etc/lilo.conf; - $GLOBAL_FILE{grub.conf}=/boot/grub/grub.conf; + $GLOBAL_FILE{menu.lst}=/boot/grub/menu.lst; $GLOBAL_FILE{limits.conf}=/etc/security/limits.conf; $GLOBAL_FILE{mtab}=/etc/mtab; $GLOBAL_FILE{pam_access.conf}=/etc/security/access.conf; diff -ruN bastille-2.1.1/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm bastille-2.1.1.new/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm --- bastille-2.1.1/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm 2005-06-06 10:18:10.0 +0300 +++ bastille-2.1.1.new/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm 2005-06-06 09:47:16.0 +0300 @@ -192,12 +192,12 @@ # If they want to modify the hard disk's grub file, make sure it exists. #if (getGlobalConfig(BootSecurity,lilosub_drive) eq Y) { - if ( -e getGlobal('FILE', grub.conf) ) { - push @grub_config_files,getGlobal('FILE', grub.conf); + if ( -e getGlobal('FILE', menu.lst) ) { + push @grub_config_files,getGlobal('FILE', menu.lst); } else { - ErrorLog(Couldn't modify hard drive's grub.conf -- couldn't); - ErrorLog(find . getGlobal('FILE', grub.conf) . \n); + ErrorLog(Couldn't modify hard drive's menu.lst -- couldn't); + ErrorLog(find . getGlobal('FILE', menu.lst) . \n); } #} diff -ruN bastille-2.1.1/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/API.pm bastille-2.1.1.new/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/API.pm --- bastille-2.1.1/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/API.pm 2005-06-06 10:23:45.0 +0300 +++ bastille-2.1.1.new/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/API.pm 2005-06-06 10:08:18.0 +0300 @@ -771,7 +771,7 @@ $GLOBAL_FILE{inittab}=/etc/inittab; $GLOBAL_FILE{lilo.conf}=/etc/lilo.conf; - $GLOBAL_FILE{grub.conf}=/boot/grub/grub.conf; + $GLOBAL_FILE{menu.lst}=/boot/grub/menu.lst; $GLOBAL_FILE{limits.conf}=/etc/security/limits.conf; $GLOBAL_FILE{mtab}=/etc/mtab; $GLOBAL_FILE{pam_access.conf}=/etc/security/access.conf; diff -ruN bastille-2.1.1/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm bastille-2.1.1.new/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm --- bastille-2.1.1/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm 2005-06-06 10:23:54.0 +0300 +++ bastille-2.1.1.new/debian/tmp/usr/lib/Bastille/BootSecurity.pm 2005-06-06 10:08:18.0 +0300 @@ -192,12 +192,12 @@ # If they want to modify the hard disk's grub file, make sure it exists. #if (getGlobalConfig(BootSecurity,lilosub_drive) eq Y) { - if ( -e getGlobal('FILE', grub.conf) ) { - push @grub_config_files,getGlobal('FILE', grub.conf); + if ( -e getGlobal('FILE', menu.lst) ) { + push @grub_config_files,getGlobal('FILE', menu.lst); } else { - ErrorLog(Couldn't modify hard drive's grub.conf -- couldn't); - ErrorLog(find . getGlobal('FILE', grub.conf) . \n); + ErrorLog(Couldn't modify hard drive's menu.lst -- couldn't); + ErrorLog(find . getGlobal('FILE', menu.lst) . \n); } #} diff -ruN bastille-2.1.1/debian/tmp/usr/share/Bastille/Questions.txt bastille-2.1.1.new/debian/tmp/usr/share/Bastille/Questions.txt --- bastille-2.1.1/debian/tmp/usr/share/Bastille/Questions.txt 2005-06-06 10:23:27.0 +0300 +++ bastille-2.1.1.new/debian/tmp/usr/share/Bastille/Questions.txt 2005-06-06 10:08:17.0 +0300 @@ -1341,7 +1341,7 @@ servers which are not locked away in their own room.

This seems to fix #307068 as well. pbbuttonsd must be started after mouseemu for this to work, and #307068 Doesn't matter in my setup - I can start mouseemu manually way after bootup and pbbuttonsd still receives its events. i guess the fact my mouseemu configuration uses the fn makes a difference here. paul -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
