Bug#317256: tetex-bin: \pdfadjustspacing and \pdfprotrudechars no longer working

2005-07-07 Thread Silas S. Brown
Package: tetex-bin
Version: 2.0.2-30
Severity: normal

When I was using Debian Woody, I would put
\pdfadjustspacing=2 \pdfprotrudechars=2 in the preambles of
my letters and other documents, and this would make a
positive difference to the spacing when typeset with
pdflatex. After the upgrade to Sarge, the presence or
absence of this setting appears to make no difference
whatsoever to the printed output. Certainly no characters
are protruded (verified by loading the output into The Gimp
and drawing a straight line down the right-hand margin) and
the spacing does not appear to be adjusted, and pdflatex
produces output that is identical to latex (i.e. none of
pdflatex's adjustments have taken effect). I am using the
same documents as I used before, and I have not otherwise
tampered with the tetex distribution.

Bug#317258: Megaraid driver lost PCI ID mapping for NetRAID 1M 2M

2005-07-07 Thread Kevin Carson
Package: kernel-source-2.6.11
Version: 2.6.11-7

I have an HP Netserver loaded with Debian Etch and configured with an HP
NetRAID 2M raid card. Since the split of the PCI IDs between the megaraid
(legacy) and megaraid_mbox (new) drivers, this card is no longer recognized
by either driver.

The split was such that AMI Megaraid generations 1 2 stayed in megaraid
and generation 3 went to megaraid_mbox. Unfortunately, NetRAID 1M 2M use
a generation 3 PCI ID but isn't within the PCI ID table of the megaraid_mbox
driver. From googling the web, it would appear that the NetRAID 1M 2M
will never be supported by the new driver.

So I'm submitting two very small patches that add back support specifically
for these two cards into the megaraid driver's pci id table. This has been
tested as working with my setup which uses a NetRAID 2m using a 2.02
firmware. I note that megaraid is a very well tested driver in general with
this card and still includes code specifically to work around lack of 64 bit
addressing with older NetRAID 1M/2M 1.07/1.08/1.09 firmware. As such,
keeping these cards associated with the megaraid (legacy) driver seems like
the best idea.

Keep up the good work.

Kevin

Bug#317257: gv: PDF with full pathname + change settings = crash

2005-07-07 Thread Silas S. Brown
Package: gv

If you use gv to view a PDF file, and that PDF file has a
full pathname, e.g.

gv /tmp/flyer.pdf

and then use the drop-down box to change the zoom factor,
the gs interpreter crashes with the following message:

Similar things happen when you try to change the paper size
and orientation.

However, if when launching gv you do:

cd /tmp
gv flyer.pdf

then everything works fine. However, the bug is still
effective if you do

cd /tmp
gv /tmp/flyer.pdf

so it's the presence of a pathname on the command line that
causes the bug, not the value of the current directory.
Incidentally the bug does NOT take effect if you do

cd /
gv tmp/flyer.pdf

so it must be the leading / that is causing a problem. I
have tested this on different PDFs and it is consistent.
The bug does NOT manifest itself with PostScript files, only
with PDF files. This bug was not present on Woody's gv.

Bug#317259: netdiag: netwatch contains unmentioned (documentation?) call-home code

2005-07-07 Thread Wouter Van Hemel
Package: netdiag
Version: 0.7-7
Severity: normal

After freaking out about weird packets resulting from my network, I noticed
netwatch contains call-home code I didn't find anything about in the man page.

The README does say something about it... but who reads that. ;)

I really think it should be made more clear that netwatch contains such code
BEFORE one installs and executes it.

I also wonder if the obtained data is still being used by upstream.

Hello,

This bug appears to be fixed in Debian experimental.

When I tried to send a split bzip2 file, I received the file fine.

I got the following message, but it worked regardless:

Bug#317258: Megaraid driver lost PCI ID mapping for NetRAID 1M 2M

2005-07-07 Thread Horms
On Wed, Jul 06, 2005 at 11:12:33PM -0700, Kevin Carson wrote:

Thanks. To be quite honest there was a bit of guess work in making
the orignal split as far as I understand, so patches like this are well
appreciated. I will chase up what is happening with the Megaraid driver
in the forthcoming 2.4.12 packages, as I am not sure there will be
another spin of 2.6.11.

Fabione, I'm CCing you on this as I got the patch from you in the first
place, and you might want this update.

 Keep up the good work.

Ah, I understand now.

The linux-sound-base package is now in unstable. It would be quite
appropriate for all k-i packages containing both OSS and ALSA modules
(viz., all current k-i 2.6 packages) to Depend on linux-sound-base; it
would also be appropriate for all other k-i packages to at least Suggest
linux-sound-base. This package gives the admin the ability (via
dpkg-reconfigure) to disable either OSS or ALSA so that one does not
conflict with the other.

If the admin chooses OSS then nothing further is required. If the admin
chooses ALSA then the alsa packages should also be installed. ALSA is
the preferred sound system for k-i 2.6, so I think it appropriate for
the k-i 2.6 packages to Recommend or Suggest alsa, a virtual package
currently Provided by alsa-base (but possibly a metapackage in the future).

This bug is also causing:

#316653: yelp should not depend on mozilla-browser

which results in mozilla-browser being a standard part of gnome-core, which is
complete nonsense and renders the gnome-core package unusable to me.

Why do you need to fix something in upstream to split out some shared objects?
I know the ABI is totaly unstable but programs already using these objects
don't seem to care much.

What is the problem with distributing the same files, but in a different

Subject: debootstrap: downgrading 'filetutils' to Sarge version fixes it for me
Followup-For: Bug #314858
Package: debootstrap
Version: 0.3.1.4

Having made some more tests, I noticed that I can use the unstable versions of
'debootstrap' and 'pbuilder' just
fine, as long as the version of 'findutils' (which provides 'xargs') is the one
from Sarge. Upgrading 'findutils' to
the one currently in Etch produces the afforementioned xargs: rm: Argument
list too long error.

From my perspective, it seems that this triple-merged bug is in fact two
different problems:

1) the buildd variant indeed fails for Etch, because we miss a
/usr/lib/debootstrap/scripts/etch.buildd

2) the xargs: rm: Argument list too long error reported by other people is
because the 'xargs' in 'findutils' newer
than Sarge appears broken.

I've not written in *roff before, nor am I familiar with man page
standards, but here it comes. I used a format similar to --help
rather than document -listen as a normal option, as it changes
the host:port parameter to a display number.

Thanks a lot.

Have you checked if the manpage look good after this?

Odd indeed, could the libmyodbc when installed place the correct
odbcinst.ini file in /etc and therefore overwrite the odbcinst.ini
file which seems to have been magically generated.

No, updates to /etc/odbcinst.ini by packages need to be done using the
odbcinst tool, to avoid overwriting local changes made by the admin. In
your case, there seems to have been just such a local change which, even
though it wasn't intentional, has to be respected by the libmyodbc package.

Bug#317165: localechooser: behaves badly if user selected different default locale

2005-07-07 Thread Eugeniy Meshcheryakov
6 липня 2005 о 23:17 +0200 Christian Perrier написав(-ла):
  Package: localechooser
  Severity: normal
  Tags: l10n d-i

I tried to install system in Ukrainian language but chose locale
uk_UA.UTF-8 to be default on new system. After reboot to second stage
console was setup to use UTF-8 as encoding (locale was uk_UA.UTF-8 as
expected). Then termwrap probably tried to start jfbterm and failed
(it was not present, termwrap only loaded framebuffer module). After that
base-config was run with no cyrillic letters at all.

Well, as you mention a failure to load jfbterm, I suspect the bug not
being in localechooser (at least in forst approximation) but rather in
 jfbterm failing to load.
jfbterm is failing to load because it is not present, it is not required
for Ukrainian install, so localechooser did not install it. Problem with
localechooser it that it sets up console to use KOI8-U instead of UTF-8.
There is also problem with termwrap that it tries to use jfbterm for
Ukrainian install.

Have you (or kmuto) tried a Japanese install with all defaults?
I haven't but I think that install with both UTF-8 and EUC-JP locales will
be successful for Japanese.

Anyway, such breakage is not really surprising : up to now, everything
in d-i assumed that, for a given language, only one encoding is
used...which now becomes untrue as you clearly show here.

I suspect that choosing fr_FR.UTF-8 would lead to some display problem
 in 2d stage.
That will be minor problems compared to Ukrainian: you at least will be
able to read some text and not only words Debian :)

openssh-server ships /etc/pam.d/ssh, but this above line indicates it is
looking for /etc/pam.d/sshd, and then fall back to /etc/pam.d/other. I
 presume
the submitter has changed /etc/pam.d/other to reject user logins, while in the
default case this change will simply cause things like pam_env, pam_motd,
 pam_limits and pam_mail to be not-processed.

(I believe this change also caused 317088, but cannot be certain from the
 report itself.)

Thanks for that. I don't understand how this could possibly have
happened, though; I certainly didn't touch anything related to PAM in
1:4.1p1-5, and the build log looks perfectly fine. I've also just
upgraded some other machines to 1:4.1p1-5 and they're working fine too.
You're certain it was working fine with 1:4.1p1-4?

I might fix this by fixing #255870/#261363, but I would really like to
understand the real problem first.

Could I get an 'strace -f -s 1024' of the server while you try to
connect to it? Feel free to send it to me privately and/or audit it to
remove any sensitive data like host keys and shadow password data first.

Richard A Nelson wrote:

It doesn't. openssh-server depends on openssh-client, not the other way
round. See the changelog for openssh 1:3.8.1p1-9. (I'm not sure what
and at the same level means, though?)

Bug#317271: request-tracker3.4: Patch to work with libapache2-mod-perl2 = 2.0

2005-07-07 Thread Jan Hudec
Package: request-tracker3.4
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hello, I managed to get request-tracker3.4 3.4.2 working with
libapache2-mod-perl2 2.0.1.

I attach a patch describing the changes I have done to the source
itself. I have not fixed the debian control file.

The patch does these three things:
1) In webmux.pl, replaces require Apache2; require Apache::Request with
require Apache2::Request (and the same for Apache::compat).
2) In lib/RT/Interface/Web/Handler.pm renames the wrappers for
Apache::request and calls to Apache-server with their respective
   new names.
3) Brings back the apache2-modperl2.conf, this time without
PerlModule Apache2 Apache::compat
statement. webmux.pl does the right thing, so this is not needed
   here.

For updating control files please note, that the patch replaces the
statements, so it now requires libapache2-mod-perl2 = 2.0 and
libhtml-mason-perl = 1.29, which is the first updated version.

Please, forward upstream too.

Doesn't sound to me like this bug makes the package mostly unusable; it
sounds like there's a specific operation that's unusable.

Bug#317241: SSH claims to be sshd to PAM, but ships /etc/pam.d/ssh

2005-07-07 Thread Andrew Schulman
openssh-server ships /etc/pam.d/ssh, but this above line indicates it
is
looking for /etc/pam.d/sshd, and then fall back to /etc/pam.d/other.
I
presume the submitter has changed /etc/pam.d/other to reject user
logins, while in the default case this change will simply cause things
 like pam_env, pam_motd, pam_limits and pam_mail to be not-processed.

That's correct. And yes, ln -s ssh /etc/pam.d/sshd solves the problem
here too. Thanks for spotting that.

I no longer use this package so I am orphaning it in the hope it will

well. It is currently up-to-date with upstream and the packaging is in
good shape.

Hm, I have noticed the patch is not really correct for Debian either.

The problem is, that the Handler.pm is used for both mod-perl1 and mod-perl2.
Thus the two changed places must be duplicated for old and new mod-perl API.

rembered your irc posting, so what's about the idea of that generic

Can these relationships be done in such a way that they exclude
architectures that don't have linux-sound-base or alsa-base?

Bug#315978: [sparc64] can't net install on v210

2005-07-07 Thread Joey Hess
Dave Love wrote:
 More info on this...

The sparc list reports that tg3 is known not to work since it needs
firmware which has been removed. In that case I think the driver
should be removed and this should be documented, especially as it
isn't clear the driver has failed with a 2.6 kernel.

The tg3 driver works for any tg3 card which already contains usable
firmware. This is many of them on i386, but I don't know about sparc.
Removing the driver (which happened in Debian's 2.6.11 kernel BTW), is
not the best approach.

AFAIK this will be resolved in Debian's 2.6.12 kernel, since the
firmware has been relicensed.

Bug#317277: copyright-lists-upstream-authors-with-dh_make-boilerplate is overly nitpicky - please remove

2005-07-07 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: lintian
Version: 1.23.9
Severity: wishlist

The lintian test
'copyright-lists-upstream-authors-with-dh_make-boilerplate' is extremely
nitpicky. It addresses the following problem:

There is Upstream Author(s) in your copyright file. This was most
likely a remnant from the dh_make template.

There's either one upstream author, in which case you should remove
the (s), or there are several upstream authors, in which case you
should remove the ( and ).

Come on, please. I hope you all agree that this test whines about
something that's not important, the text is grammatically correct but
only has two parentheses which might have been left out to save 2 bytes.
I find it hard to believe that this test would enhance package quality
judging by any significant standard.

Useless tests, besides wasting people's time, have the danger of
annoying people too much: when presented with too many complaints about
irrelevant problems, you risk people not paying attention to Lintian's
output anymore.

Thanks,
Thijs

Thankyou Mr Bug Control Robot.

If an AMD64 user wishes to test it, that'd be good. I _think_ the problem is
that libtool1.4 doesn't know when to use -fPIC on AMD64, but I don't want to
make this change until I know if it's going to actually work, since it'll
just chew buildd time needlessly.

Description : Perl module for unified IO

IO::All combines all of the best Perl IO modules into a single Spiffy
object oriented interface to greatly simplify your everyday Perl IO
idioms. It exports a single function called io, which returns a new
IO::All object. And that object can do it all!

The IO::All object is a proxy for IO::File, IO::Dir, IO::Socket,
IO::String, Tie::File, File::Spec, File::Path and File::ReadBackwards;
as well as all the DBM and MLDBM modules. You can use most of the
methods found in these classes and in IO::Handle (which they inherit
from). IO::All adds dozens of other helpful idiomatic methods including
file stat and manipulation functions.

Since I received no more feedback on this and I cannot reproduce the problem

If this is a real problem it should hit a lot of people, so I should receive
more evidences of it in some time.

Ok. What are these subdirectories named?

The postgresql-7.4 package uses /etc/postgresql/7.4/main , where
main may vary. Perhaps it'd be wise to ask the user where the
configuration resides?

For your information I'm trying to get this software component
depricated as the apache part is not needed and for database configuration
it do not exist (at least in experimental) a much better dbconfig-common
 tool.

Ok, good to know. Thanks!

Bug#317279: fai: dpkg --force-confdef in apt.conf

2005-07-07 Thread Roland Rosenfeld
Package: fai
Version: 2.8.4
Severity: normal

/usr/share/fai/etc/apt.conf contains the following block:

DPkg
{
  Options {
  --abort-after=4711; // a magic number in cologne ;-)
  --force-confdef;
  }
};

The --force-confdef caused heavy trouble on many systems when
locally modified conffiles are overwritten (without any question) by
Debian security updates.

IMHO the default configuration should always ask me what I want or
should at least keep the old (modified) configuration but should never
overwrite my changes without asking me!

it's a patch being worked on between myself and the upstream authors
to fix a bug, but apparently it's still b0rken. i had been holding
off on making an upload because the security update contained
in this release has not yet made it to testing, but i'm going to

Bug#317280: darcs calls less instead of pager

2005-07-07 Thread Thomas Prokosch
Package: darcs
Version: 1.0.3-1
Severity: normal

When piping output through a pager darcs calls the less binary directly
instead of relying on the pager symlink. This is confusing when no less
binary is installed (yes, there are machines) or the user prefers another
pager over less (such as me).

Less as a fallback should only be used after 1. there is no pager binary
2. it has been checked that there is indeed a less binary on the machine.

Please, do not presume your problem is a general one without verification.
Of course it installs perfectly in a fresh install on sarge (just
verified to be sure, but it's a quite macroscopic issue to be never
pointed before, don't you think so?), as well as in upgrading from a previous
one.
Would you please purge and install it again, and post logging?

Bug#317282: proftpd: no init script

2005-07-07 Thread Justin Pryzby
On Thu, Jul 07, 2005 at 02:38:42PM +0200, Laradji nacer wrote:
 Package: proftpd
 Version: 1.2.10-15
 Severity: grave
 Justification: renders package unusable

The install script does not install /etc/init.d/proftpd
Are you sure? I just looked:

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelistword=proftpdversion=stablearch=i386

etc/init.d/proftpd provided by: net/proftpd,
net/proftpd-pgsql,
net/proftpd-mysql,
net/proftpd-ldap

If you deleted it, it may not be recreated on reinstall. (But will be
recreated on reinstall after a purge).

Justin
