  Sorry for being unclear. If you build kernel-source-2.4.27 2.4.27-11
  then it should use gcc-3.3 for the build, even if your default
  gcc is gcc-4.0. To be more specific, if you inspect the makefile
  you will see that it actually sets the compiler to be gcc-3.3,
  rather than gcc.

  Of course if you use a different Makefile, say to build
  out of tree modules, or force the compiler to something else,
  this system breaks down. I'm not sure there is a good solution to
  that problem. But unpacking the kernel-source tar ball and doing
  a build should work as long as you have gcc-3.3 installed,
  which is a recomendation of the package.

 Well, if it fails when building a module I will just go and bug the
 maintaner for that module source. ;-)

Thats pretty much what I was thinking needs to happen.
Lets see how it goes.

tag 274705 + patch
thanks

So the relevant code seems to be in src/copy.c, where it checks if
--reply=no was set _and_ the file isn't overwritable; or if -i was
set, or if no option was given and the file isn't overwritable. So
--reply=no has an effect when you do:

touch a b
chmod 000 b
mv --reply=no a b  # can't overwrite, so do nothing

This seems quite deliberate, but afaics it's a bug. I think the attached

 This is in the stable (Sarge) release.

As usual, I had Sunday dinner at my parents' house tonight. Afterwards, my Dad
and I watched a Jimmy Hendrix concert DVD I bought him. We talked about how,
though his music may seem like mainstream or even oldies today, Hendrix was
such a pioneer. He explored what electricity could do for the guitar like
nobody before him. Famous musicians - many of his peers - marveled at what
Hendrix created. Yet his career was a short, bright flame. How many people who
have contributed to art, science and knowledge can say that a few years of
their career brought them unparalleled success and recognition? I suppose John
Nash's notion of an original idea really can have that much impact. I don't
imagine that I will ever affect the world with music or economic theory, but as
I writer I would like to leave my mark. I think about it often. Will my writing
be read? Or even matter? I feel that while it's good to admire great thinkers

much.3

Well, if the packagee do not include any binary and no doc files then
this IS a grave bug.

However,

   Your kdm package is obviously in state 'deinstall ok config-files'.
   I'm closing this bug.

kdm was in state installed on my system. This strange state that no real
files are in the package was the result of an upgrade several days ago.

Now when I try to reinstall kdm by apt there are many unresolved
dependencies. And a try to do this with dselect will deinstall kdm and
give no way to install it.

 It seems it is rather a problem with dvipdfm being to strict with
 pdf name objects and not accepting the #.

Thanks for analysis! I guess we should contact Mark A. Wicks about
that.

lol. sorry, but moving the files to somewhere else doesn't free it from

Each program, utility, and function should have an associated manual

Could you please add the name of the scanned package to that, something

This helps in scripts when you uscan for many packages in a batch.

As 'e' and 'r' are direct one beside another (on a qwert[yz] keyboard,
maybe dvorak is better) it is very dangerous to type blind crontab -e
to edit the crontab. If you do so and type crontab -r the crontab will
be gone and has to be restored from backup.

It whould be nice if crontab whould ask if the user whould realy do so.
Many other tools ask this question for much less dangerous think.

Bug#319389: acidlab: ACID looks dead should get replaced by BASE

2005-08-20 Thread Jeremy T. Bouse
I does look as though BASE is a much better solution and apparently
has corrected many of the issues with the licensing of the current ACID
version causing problems. I'll begin working to get BASE packaged as
soon as possible, but can't make any estimates at this time. I will be
working to have it replace acidlab if at all possible; however, that may
require extra testing to make the transitions smooth.

I did get a chance to take a look at the demo the Snort booth had at
LWE'05 last week and talk with one of the developers on the project.

Regards,
Jeremy

Bug#324104: please split off non-essenstial stuff from xlibs-data to a separate package

2005-08-20 Thread Miernik
Package: xlibs-data
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-5
Severity: wishlist

xlibs-data contains some things which are essenstial for running most X
programs, while other things in it tka up a lot of space, and are rarely
used. The package takes up almost 7.5 MB of disk space, out of which
4 MB are cursors in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/ (only two or three default
cursors should be in the main package, the rest in xlibs-data-extra for
example), and half a meg of stuff in /usr/X11R6/include/X11/bitmaps/ and
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/bitmaps/ which I don't think I ever use, while I
use X (I use the ion3 window manager).

libx11-6 package (which I need because GTK+ depends on it) desription
states: libx11-6 depends on xlibs-data for locale data and the X error
and keysym databases, and these are almost the only things I need from
xlibs-data (+ two or three default cursors). So please leave only that
in xlibs-data, which will make it's installed size about 40% of it's
current installed size, and move the rest to a new package, for example
xlibs-data-extra.

Please don't tell me that 4 MB is nothing in the era of 200 GB hard
drives - people want tu use flash disks as the only filesystem also in
desktop computers, not just embedded (just because of their silentness,
nothing else), and/or put a copy of the whole filesystem in RAM for
speed, and then such a waste of diskpace matters.

requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

libffi2 is no longer available in unstable, so libsablevm1 needs to be
rebuilt against libffi4 (or similar..) Until then, libsablevm1 is thus
uninstallable as well.

Bug#324111: aspell-en: checksum mismatch between package and filesystem

2005-08-20 Thread Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe
Package: aspell-en

Hello,

when checking the md5sums of aspell-en, there are always the following
mismatches between package and filesystem:

$ debsums -s aspell-en

This is most likely because files in the package are modified on the
fly.

You should not change files on-the-fly that you did put under package
management control (i.e. put them into the package).
If you need some defaults for these files, create them in the postinst
script. For example, you could ship them im some other directory
(like /usr/share/.../defaults) and (conditionally) copy them while
postinst.
No need to mention: make sure you carefully remove them while the
package removal phase, too :)

Rhythmbox sometimes freezes on startup while loading the music database.
It seems like this issue is associated with the rhythmlet gdesklet,

 Well, if the packagee do not include any binary and no doc files then
 this IS a grave bug.
Sure, but the fact is that the package include the binary and the doc files,
you just need to install it (not possible in Sid just now because of other
issues).

 kdm was in state installed on my system. This strange state that no real
 files are in the package was the result of an upgrade several days ago.
Can you tell me how can you have kdm installed in your system without having

Bug#322686: docbook-xsl: new version 1.69.1 available

In theory, the DTDs etc. would belong to the docbook-xml

together on the Debian level, but that would be confusing.)

 I suppose I could package up the current docbook-xsl as is, and also
 package the current website slides packages. That way the users can
 decide which sets of website/slides stylesheets they want to use.

This sounds most sensible. If any difficulties arise, I would
leave the slides and website stylesheets out of docbook-xsl
until things are settled upstream.

I noticed that the package could be improved a little. The patch would be
too big for done changes, which as substantial, so I'm attaching the
whole chnaged file here. The most serious problem was that the
package did not use unique namespace prefix for all functions and
varibales. That causes pollution in Emacs and possible clashes.
Variable definitions should use 'defvar' and not 'setq' and installing
to gnus should happend at Gnus load time etc. See Changelog.

* gnus-BTS.el:
(top level): Changed all variable and function names to use common
prefix `gnus-dbts-'. This makes package namespace clean. Converted
all lambda forms to real functions. Cleaned up
`gnus-select-article-hook' setting.
Changed all 'setq' to 'defvar'.

I choose only important as severity.

It is not relevant if I use gs-esp, gs-gpl or gs-afpl so thats the reason
filling the report for the driver itself (I hope this is where the bug is
located).

Also I tryed to purge all relevant packages and reinstalling. Including
removing the printer and installing it again.

My Printer is an Epson Stylus Photo 915 and it worked well until this upgrade.
Just to note, there was a problem with an upgrade bevore having a wrong
allignment of the printout on the paper but this might an other bug.

Bug#324117: Redocumenting inherited members

2005-08-20 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: doxygen
Version: 1.4.4-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

thanks for packaging doxygen!

I'm having trouble with redocumenting inherited members. Here is an
example:

// Interface for a Consumer
struct Consumer
{
/// Consume an item
virtual void consume(item) = 0;

/// Consume a container of items
virtual void consumeItems(items)
{
// Default implementation
for (Items::iterator i = items.begin(); i != items.end(); i++)
consume(*i);
}
};

// Interface for a Collection. Uses Consumer as a way to be populated.
struct Collection : public Consumer
{
/// Retrieve an item
virtual void getItem(item) = 0;
}

struct Storage : public Collection
{
void consume(item) { do something }
void getItem(item) { do something }
}

Now, I'd like to redocument the consume and consumeItems methods in
Collection, as I know more about their context and I want to show that
their function is to insert items into the collection.

Unfortunately, I found no way to do that to date.

Ciao,

Enrico

 If you care about that, then use either KDrive (without XKB/DRI/etc,
 naturally),

There is no KDrive package in Debian.

 the modular libX11 that lets you disable XKB and XCMS (which, IIRC, is
 about 1MB or more), and basically everything that isn't the standard
 X.Org distribution, much less the Debian packages thereof.

I don't understand much of this.

 Closing this bug because I don't think there's any merit in it, sorry.

In what precentage of systems do you think are the extra cursor themes
and pixmaps (which together take up 60% of this package installed size)
actually used?  5% ?  1% ?

In what precentage of systems do you think is the package xlibs-data
installed?  80% ?  95% ?

I estimate that in about 75% of systems where this package is installed,
the 60% of this package, the 4.3 MB of bitmaps, pixmaps and cursor data
are not used.

So how can you justify including that in a package that anything which
has something to do with X depends on? I don't think there is any merit
in that.

I am not angry that you don't want to fix this bug, because no developer
is obliged to do anything, it'd get done when someone sometime would
feel wanting to do this and supply a patch, maybe even me. But I am
angry that you closed the wish, a wish that wouldn't do anybody any
harm, the burden on packagers would be minimal, would save a
considerable amount of space (packages are beeing split for smaller or
similar space savings: bsdmainutils/bsdutils, gettext-base/gettext), and
you closed it by a one-person decision, even without a futher discussion
and/or waiting for other's opinion on debian-x or the BTS.

 Thanks for your help.

The source updates look fine to me, but:

  * Use absolute paths when making links to doc directories, this stops
problems for people with symlinked /usr/share/doc (i.e., me!).

contradicts Debian Policy 10.5. I don't think personal preference in
configuring symlinks on one's system is a very compelling reason to
contradict policy here.

Thanks,

Package: wflogs

While translating the file wflogs, I encountered the following
errors, which I thought you might like to eliminate in a future release.

wflogs will use the corresponding modules to parse the logs. If you
want to
parse a log file with multiple formats mixed (typically a remote
syslog
file), you can specify several format module names, one being probed

another. Use special name `all' to try every available formats.

obfuscate is not a commonly-used word. Most of your English-

the plural form is generally used. So:

x is a
growing number), ipaddr belong to 0.0.0.0/8 network, macaddr are of

each
original value is associated with a new unique one (unicity is
preserved).

I would recommend preserved instead of conserved, unless the
former word has a specific technical meaning here.

Again, it would be better to use a word in common usage rather than
obfuscated.

Unless it is an invented technical word, we use uniqueness, not
unicity.

Hi Frank and all,

thanks for the package-name-doesnt-match-sonames check!
However, I'd like to offer two reductions of false positives:
- allow c2 suffices for the C++-transition,
- lowercase sonames (e.g. for libX*).

Attached is a quick patch.

Kind regards

T.

P.S.: Would you entertain a patch for #253884?

This little known secret has been kept quiet for years.  The opportunity exists

Leon Farrell

I am back to work today and compared to yesterday 100 percent better. I came in
yesterday feeling a little sick to my stomach but just put it off to sour
stomach thinking nothing about it, I mean I have worked with worse. As the day
progressed I noticed my head was hurting more and more, then the lights were
getting brighter, at one point I must have looked like the hunchback of Notre
dame. I had several of my counter parts coming over concerned about how I was
feeling. Several of the folks I have worked with have learned the look on my
face and knew what was happening. Now don't get me wrong I have worked through
many a migraine and was going to work through this one. This migraine had a
different idea though, this was going to be one of those that sideline me. I
felt it welling up in my stomach and ran to the bathroom to worship the ole
porcelain crown. I came back after a few minutes and a quick mouthwash back to
the desk. My compadre ask what happened so I told her and I was promptly
ordered home. After checking out with the bosses and making sure there would be
no trouble for her to stay on my shift I left. I took much longer to get home
then normal due to the fact that I stopped a few times to holler for Ralph! I
walked into the house and straight to the bedroom where it was Dark and aid
down when my stomach had settled down some I took my meds and was out for a
little while. Now if you are one of the lucky ones that do not suffer from
migraines the only thing I can think of to let you know the pain that one can
feel from it is to take your little toe and close it in a vice till it is the
equivalent of mashed taters. Folks having migraines at time lose all track of
what they are doing, they have been known to put their heads through walls and
more trying to get rid of the pain. While the best known cure on the market is
a product called Imatrex, I am one of the few that are allergic to it. I have
to use other measures and if I do not want to take narcotics like then I must
suffer through it. One of the bad thinks is you get sensitive to light then any
movement makes you nauseous, any noise sounds are magnified ten fold. All you
want to do is get in a dark corner away from the world and hide. Now the next
day when you wake up especially when you have had a rough one like last night
you fell almost hung over, really groggy. I woke thought and felt much better
(then I did yesterday) and yes hung over I came to work and had a fairly normal
day here at the ole station. 3

The upstream developer wrote this about his intentions wrt Falcon's Eye:

 I intend to still work on NetHack - Falcon's Eye. It has taken
 much longer than I have thought earlier, but I do intend to make
 a new release of the game later.

 Other people have also made updates and new versions; your recent

 I seem to remember some other updates based on newer versions of

I've to attend the wedding of my sister today but I'll send a patch

Bug#324018: kdm does not have the binary in the package anymore

2005-08-20 Thread Adeodato Simó
* Klaus Ethgen [Sat, 20 Aug 2005 09:35:30 +0200]:

 Well, if the packagee do not include any binary and no doc files then
 this IS a grave bug.

  Sure, but it is not the case as demonstrated by my transcript.

  This is the best _sincere_ advice I can give to you: stop using
  unstable.

  Have a nice day,

Bug#319929: nsis: 2.08-2 better, but some still fail

2005-08-20 Thread Bruno Holliger

Dear Paul

Upstream has provided a patch[1] for this issue that I tested and found
that it works very well[2], which is now in debian nsis 2.08-3, which
I'll be uploading to debian mentors once I can find a fix for the
BgImage segfault.

Tested the examples again and those worked great.

Thanks,
-Bruno.

Bug#324128: Install script not found and generic install problemes on mozdev.org

2005-08-20 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: mozilla-browser
Version: 2:1.7.10-1
Severity: normal

Installing of extensions from mozdev.org or other sources are somewhat
difficult with the debian version of mozilla.

1. The most links on mozdev.org do not work with the debian version (a
   vanilla version works well) as they use onclick to install extensions
   and have a href to #.

2. If you solve this hurdle by using a own wrapper page to install

   applications can be installed but most cannot (as for example the

You are using Kanotix, but reporting bugs to debian. In this case it
doesn't matter, as it is probably an upstream bug.

 I don't know. This was the result of a normal apt-get update; apt-get

Adeodato asked some days ago to not dist-upgrade your KDE until he tells
otherwise. You can recover a working KDE by following some advices in
messages sent to the debian-kde mailing list in the last days.

Bug#323385: was setting charset to latin1 in .muttrc :/

2005-08-20 Thread Sven Luther
retitle 323385 .muttrc setting latin1 in a UTF-8 terminal breaks.
severity 323385 normal
thanks
Hello,

Sorry for the disturbance, i was setting charset to latin1 in my muttrc, which
was causing all those troubles.

Still, let me describe the exact situation, and you will be able to decide
wheter to close the bug report or not, but i will add the reason of the
problem for completeness.

ssh is not involved, i tried and reproduce this locally.

i have set my whole system to fr_FR.UTF-8. i had the following in my muttrc :

charset-hook us-ascii iso-8859-1# use latin1 for incorrectly encoded emails
set charset=iso-8859-1# which charset the terminal uses
set send_charset=iso-8859-1 # send emails with latin1 chars

Which i believe was wrong in this case, don't remember why i added it, but i
just recently migrated to UTF-8.

when someone send me an email with a latin1 terminal, like :

  From: Jérôme Marant [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then i was obviously not seeing the utf-8 chars, which is understandable, but
furthermore, mutt was truncating the From field after the first J, when doing
a reply or something.

I feel that this is a bug still, even if my encoding settings where fubar,
mutt should be copying the line verbatim instead of truncating it.

Ok, thanks for your resolution, don't know why i didn't receive your last
email, but doing the :set ?charset was the one which hinted me on the problem.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

Bug#207951: more info

2005-08-20 Thread Vincent McIntyre

The misspelling is in the name table of the ttf file.
 (ttx -t name bsmi00lp.ttf; grep -i reguler bsmi00lp.ttx)

I managed to unpack the ttf file and patch the bsmi00lp._n_a_m_e.ttx file,
then repack to produce a fixed bsmi00lp.ttf. It's big, contact me if you
want a copy.

I'm not sure how to redistribute the change to the source of a font like
this. Is it enough just to send upstream a fixed copy?

 Hi,

 Default exclude options to dpkg-buildpackage seem that does not cover
 every directory created for arch/bazaar.

 When using bazaar for managing my repository and arch-buildpackage to
 build packages, I had to add these files to the exclude regexp in my
 ~/.archdeb.conf file:

 dpkg-buildpackage = debuild -rfakeroot
-i'\+\+pristine-trees|\+\+saved.*|,,.*|\{arch\}|.arch-id*'

 Please include that -i line by default in arch-buildpackage

ii  libconfig-general-perl2.29-1 generic configuration module
ii perl 5.8.7-4Larry Wall's Practical Extraction
ii tla 1.3.3-2arch revision control system

arch-buildpackage recommends no packages.
