Bug#330119: lbreakout2: LBreakout2 should include desktop file

2005-09-26 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: lbreakout2
Version: 2.5.2-2
Severity: normal

The LBreakout2 package does not include a the desktop file. Without this
desktop file LBreakout2 is not visible for normal users in the KDE/GNOME menu.
(The already included menu file is not sufficient because the debian
menu system does not integrate well into the KDE/GNOME menu.)

Bug#330120: kverbos doesn't load verbs

2005-09-26 Thread Helen Faulkner
Package: kverbos
Version: 4:3.4.2-2
Severity: important

Hi,

I am trying to use kverbos to practise my Spanish verbs :)
I am using it with the default file of verbs that it comes with, but it is
seemingly having trouble loading the verbs in the file. For most of the verbs
is throws a warning dialog saying There is a problem with the verb $VERB.
Please check the verb in the edit dialog. For some of the verbs (maybe 1 in 8
or so) it works.

I don't know what is causing this, and I don't know whether it is a new problem,
because I have only ever looked at kverbos very briefly before. However,
looking at the edit verb list dialog, it looks to me that maybe kverbos is not
reading the list of verbs correctly from the file. It seems to have some of the
Spanish mixed in with the column that is supposed to contain the other language
(in my case, this should be English), and it is also not displaying the
accentedhave no idea characters correctly. Maybe there is a problem with the
format of the verb file, which is located in
/usr/share/apps/kverbos/data/en/verbos.verbos.

Thanks,

Helen

Is there any specific reason to close the bug? It is healthy to keep
ITPs open when packages go to experimental (that's why they are tagged
as fixed-in-experimental) since some work is still *intended* or to be
done to get the package workie on real Debian platform.

Could you please run the same test as I did on your side to see if you

The upstream author said the test the 109 verifies that barrier was

So I think these are potential security holes in current version of

Bug#330121: blootbot: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation

2005-09-26 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: blootbot
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch l10n

Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the
debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors.

If you do not already use it, please remember about the
podebconf-report-po utility, which helps warning translators about
changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. See
its man page for details.

The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators when
you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf templates
changes (EVEN TYPO CORRECTIONS). Then leave about one week for them to
update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which
requires time).

podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the
needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the
PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-)

If you apply this policy, please forget about these remarks, of
courseThis message is generic..:-)

Bug#330079: partman-auto: Should not propose only desktop system for systems with a 512Mb disk

2005-09-26 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Christian Perrier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
 Package: partman-auto
 Severity: normal

On systems with a smalll 512Mb hard disk, partman-auto only proposes the
desktop system recipewhich later in 2nd stage leads to a failure in
the standard system install because the 350Mb / partition is too small.

This is because the atomic recipe mentions 500M as minimum size for
the root partition while the home recipe only mentions 300M.

One should note that:

-300M is not enough for a base system install on a i386 platform
-both should be consistent

We should probably measure what is the current minimum size for both
types of installs:

-base system
-standard system

...and adapt the recipes accordingly.

Bug#330127: rkhunter: Do not send mail when there is no output

2005-09-26 Thread Thomas Prokosch
Package: rkhunter
Severity: normal

Rkhunter sends an email on the daily invocation even if there are no
warnings or errors. The sent mail is empty which in turn makes /usr/bin/mail
complain about the null message body. As a result there are two messages,
one confusing, when there should be none.

The probably easiest solution would be to remove the pipe to /usr/bin/mail
completely and let cron handle the mailing of the output.

Ooops. That is the same as bug #327446 -- and it is actually an R bug due to
an upstream change. We trigger the bug from the package postinst.

Sorry about that -- but it was a unannounced applications interface change by
R, and I am trying to keep the old behaviour until we switch all the 50+
 r-cran-* packages one-by-one.

Thanks for the heads, I had not noticed this as I had inadvertently put the
previous' weeks snapshot of R 2.2.0-to-be on 'hold' and had not upgrade to
the build from Thursday which bit you here.

New and corrected version should come out shortly. Sorry for the
 inconvenience.

As I said, the 2nd start of PG now doesn't fail, but the one during

If this really is a timeout-thing, I think I know why it might happen
  here:

I changed kdm to start earlier as that takes some time, so kdm is
started as 14th in runlevel 2, while PG is 20. So it could be that the
startup of KDE (which is quite hdd-intensive) makes PG take quite some
time to come up. (Did I tell you that this is a notebook hdd with only
  4500 RPM?)

If this is indeed the problem an option to increase this timeout in
pg_ctlcluster would be really nice - for example in
  /etc/default/postgresql-server-8.0 or so.

Ok, but to be sure that this is really the culprit, can you please
increase the timeout to 60 seconds (raise $attempt comparison to
  120) and check that indeed the slow startup is the reason, and not
 something else?

60 Seconds doesn't work either, but 120 do:

for (my $attempt = 0; $attempt  240; $attempt++) {

Now PG doesn't give an error anymore. I'll try with values of 120 and 40
there while removing kdm from the runlevel..

mysql-dfsg-4.1 was affected and needs a DSA. Would it be correct if I

(I could have used found tags though).

The CAN-2005-2558 is mentioned in the debian/changelog of the unstable

Which it wasn't btw, the latest version of mysql-dfsg in the archive was
 released this May.

The unstable version has had build problems for the last months on some

Bug#329730: dbconfig-common: does not work for postgresql

/bin/false means you need to su -s /bin/sh

ah, i htink this is a recent change:

mini-me[~]09:15:58$ getent passwd postgres
postgres:x:106:114:PostgreSQL administrator,,,:/var/lib/postgresql:/bin/bash

simple enough to fix, anyway.

That fixes the first set of bugs.
 Now, a chown problem, I'm using db-test-pgsql.

Why does this happen? From the typescript again with the su fixed.
 + chown -R dbtestpgsql /tmp/dbconfig-common.psql_home.5tU57X^M
 chown: `dbtestpgsql': invalid user^M

Indeed! it is an invalid user, its not a unix user but a postgresql
 user.

it should only be attempting to chown if the app was configured to
install via ident sameuser, which currently is the default (because
by default this is the only method that will work out of the box). of
course, if there's no system user, that won't work either.

as we speak i'm in the process of working with martin pitt to develop
set of postgres-hosted scripts that dbconfig-common can use to test,
add, and remove postgres configuration. this should hopefully more
completely solve this problem. in the very least, the admin will
be told what needs to be done (add a user, add a line to pg_hba.conf),
and of course dbconfig-common will be nice enough to offer to do
it for them.

also, could you post your source package online somewhere so i could
take a look at it and use it to try and flush out the bug?
I can do that, but db-test-pgsql is a decent enough test for now.

fair enough. i'll mess around with it a bit later today.

On Mon, Sep 26, 2005 at 11:15:36AM +1000, Craig Small wrote:

 '\''jffnms'\'' template1'^M
 + dbc_error='ERROR: relation acct_id_seq already exists'^M

it definitely shouldn't be doing that. the only time it should be
connecting to template one is when it is testing the connection or
creating the database user. i think there's some variable polution
going on somewhere, i'll look into that.

Bug#330129: manpage stylesheet doesn't handle nesting replaceable inside filename very well

2005-09-26 Thread Daniel Burrows
Package: docbook-xsl
Version: 1.68.1-0.1

If I nest a replaceable tag inside a filename tag in a manpage, it appears
that the XSL stylesheets generate a start italic tag for each of the two
start tags, and an end italic for each of the two end tags. Since troff
doesn't have a stack of styles, this results in the italic text being
terminated too soon, like this:

[start italics]/non/replaceable/stufffoo[end italics]/more/non/replaceable

More concretely, the last section of aptitude's manpage (in SVN) is:

  refsect1
titleSee Also/title

para

citerefentryrefentrytitleapt-get/refentrytitlemanvolnum8/manvolnum/citerefentry,

citerefentryrefentrytitleapt/refentrytitlemanvolnum8/manvolnum/citerefentry,

filename/usr/share/doc/aptitude/replaceablelang/replaceable/html/index.html/filename

from the package aptitude-doc-replaceablelang/replaceable
/para
  /refsect1

In the generated manpage, this renders as follows:

.SH SEE ALSO

.PP
 \fBapt\-get\fR(8), \fBapt\fR(8),
\fI/usr/share/doc/aptitude/\fIlang\fR/html/index\.html\fR from the package

Bug#330131: aptitude: appears to ignore unmarkauto

2005-09-26 Thread Vincent McIntyre
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-2
Severity: normal

Background
--
I've just upgraded to sarge from woody, using aptitude on the commandline,
as recommended by the release notes.

For some reason aptitude decided to remove apt-show-versions, which I'd
installed deliberately with apt-get while the box was running woody.
I read and I think understood the reason, in the html reference guide
and the manpage.

Problem statement
-
My problem is that the manpage seems to suggest that
  aptitude unmarkauto apt-show-versions
should fix the problem, but it appears not to work. As illustrated
below, the only option appears to be to allow aptitude to have its
wicked way and uninstall, then reinstall deliberately.

I could not see any similar reports to this in the BTS (most reports use
the curses interface, the closest seem to be 235727, 237830, 266061)

Workarounds
---
A suggested patch for the manual page is attached.

Future work
---
I assume there have been about 500 wishlist bugs to allow this feature to
be turned off in /etc/apt/apt.conf, please add my vote to the clamour.
If this feature exists and is documented, could you point me to the doco
and I'll submit a patch to the reference manual that puts a pointer in
the places that I looked for it.

My dialogue with aptitude is shown below.

Bug#330132: voicemail files not group-readable

2005-09-26 Thread Tzafrir Cohen
Package: asterisk
Version: 1.0.9.dfsg.1-3.1

The following was only tested on my packages, but should generally
affect other Debian systems:

Asterisk's voicemail creates files with permissions 0600. Thus they are
only readable by the user asterisk and not by anybody else in the group
asterisk.

A trivial, hard-wired fix is attached, though is probably not optimized

Bug#330133: tailor test -v does not work with Debian package

2005-09-26 Thread Frederic Daniel Luc LEHOBEY

Hi,

According to /usr/share/doc/tailor/README.gz:

You can run the test suite with the following command line::

 $ tailor test -v

that runs all the tests in sequence, or::

 $ tailor test -v TailorTest

to trigger just a subset of them.

but fails with:

$ tailor -v test

whereas this command succeeds with the same tailor version from
upstream.

You may have decided to disable the tests in the Debian package, but
if so, please say it in a README.Debian.

Thanks for your work on packaging tailor.

Bug#250583: Still present?

2005-09-26 Thread Daniel Burrows
Are you still seeing this? I've been trying to reproduce it, but without
much success. The number of fds used by the program (as shown in
/proc/pid/fd) is constant. I can see one apparently extraneous mapping
in /proc/pid/maps, but only one:

jester:~/programming/aptitude/branches/aptitude-0.3/aptitude grep
pkgcache\\.bin /proc/`pidof aptitude`/maps
b3d13000-b44cf000 r--s fe:00 1376293/var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin

(deleted)
b44d2000-b44d3000 rw-s 00c0 fe:00 1376263/var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin
(deleted)

I assume that the deleted maps are ones that were munmap'd, but that
the kernel remembers them for some reason or other. So there is what appears
to be one extra mapping, but that's all I see.

Bug#320444: postgresql-8.0: init script returns failed even if postgres started

2005-09-26 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi Andreas!

Andreas Pakulat [2005-09-26 9:23 +0200]:
60 Seconds doesn't work either, but 120 do:

 for (my $attempt = 0; $attempt  240; $attempt++) {

120 seconds? Good grief, it takes 3 seconds even on my relatively slow
iBook G4 (800 MHz) laptop (slow hd as well). I guess kdm *really*
drains your I/O resources if it lasts that long.

I don't want to default to such an exaggerated timeout just for a few
users, so I rather make this configurable with a sane default. It
seems that this is purely cosmetical for you anyway.

Now PG doesn't give an error anymore. I'll try with values of 120 and 40
there while removing kdm from the runlevel..

That would be nice to cross-check.

Thanks for checking!

Use The Changelog.

mysql-dfsg-4.1 was affected and needs a DSA. Would it be correct if I

(I could have used found tags though).

Just use Closes: in the chanbgelog. Belive it or not, the BTS will do
the right thing. See recent posts to debian-devel-announce.

Which it wasn't btw, the latest version of mysql-dfsg in the archive was
  released this May.

The unstable version has had build problems for the last months on some
archs (and I was on holyday when the bug was found). Currently I try to
get someone from the s390 team to install me the build-deps in a dchroot
but [EMAIL PROTECTED] seems to go to /dev/null :-(

Anyway I'm working on s390 for unstable/testing and waiting for Martin
Schulze to get the DSA out.

I do not understand why you are waiting to upload a fix just because
s390 doesn't build. mysql-dfsg 4.0.24-10 is still vulnerable in unstable
for all architectures.

Shortcomings

Tailor currently suffers of the following reported problems:

a) It does not handle empty CVS checkouts, in other words you cannot
bootstrap a project that has nothing in its CVS upstream
repository, or from a point in time where this condition was true.
---

Do you have examples where similar commands work? (Is it a bug in
upstream or does it come from the above repositories unsuited to
tailor?).

Thanks and best regards,
Frederic Lehobey

Installing libopensc-openssl works around this problem - should the package
depend on it?

Bug#330137: zaptel-source: can't find zaptel.h during build

2005-09-26 Thread Brian May
Package: zaptel-source
Version: 1:1.0.9.1-3.mysarge.1
Severity: important

Hi.

I recompiled zaptel for sarge, but I can't seem to build the modules. As far
as I can tell, this is not sarge specific.

I tried all the work arounds I could think of, but so far nothing works :-( It
doesn't help when I can't see the gcc command line being used.

The zaptel.h included file does appear to be in /usr/src/modules/zaptel as
expected.

Any work arounds appreciated...

Bug#330139: knoda: proposes postgres as default user name

2005-09-26 Thread Peter Eisentraut
Package: knoda
Version: 0.7.3-2
Severity: normal

When I connect using the PostgreSQL driver, the connection dialog proposes
postgres as the default user name. I don't know that sense that is
supposed to make because there is no reason why there should be a user
called postgres nor that the current user has permission to connect there
nor that he should (because that will usually be a superuser). What would
make more sense is using the current Unix user name or leavin the field
empty and let libpq pick the default user name.

Bug#330141: wxvlc: package desc: change wxWindows - wxWidgets

2005-09-26 Thread Ted Percival
Package: wxvlc
Version: 0.8.4-svn20050920-3
Severity: minor

The package description mentions wxWindows twice. Both should be
changed to wxWidgets. For instance point your sensible-browser to
http://www.wxwindows.org/ and see that it loads the wxWidgets website.
My brief search of
the site turned up no proof about the change of name, but I'm sure many
developers are aware of it.

Upgrading from sarge to etch recently makes cyrillic output in gtk1.2
applications (menus in xmms, for example) unreadable. This affects only
UTF-8 locale, setting LANG=ru_RU.KOI8-R makes things allright as is downgrading
xlibs-data to 4.3.0

Bug#231826: Is #231826 really a bug in menu?

If not, do you think you could help fix the ratmenu script?
I've tried to understand the menu language with little avail,
and it seems Jonathan cannot find any error in the script.

 Hello Morten,

I more than suspect that the three install-menu functions
entryindex(), firstentry() and lastentry() do not work,
 and that cause that bug.

Add entryindex() in the start function in the fvwm menu-methods,
 like that:
 function start($var,$com)=\
 + \ entryindex()   escfirst(title(),$hotkey,) \
 cond_surr(icon(),%,%) \  $var   $com \n

rerun menu, we get a ~/.fvwm/menudefs.hook file with menu like:
 ...
 AddToMenu /Debian/Apps/Games/Card Card Title Top
 + 12 aBridge Exec exec /usr/bin/abridge
 + 0 Canfield /home/bill
  x-terminal-emulator -T Canfield -e /usr/games/canfield
 + 2 Cribbage /home/bill
  x-terminal-emulator -T Cribbage -e /usr/games/cribbage
 + 4 Floater%/usr/share/pixmaps/floater-24.xpm% Exec exec /usr/games/floater
 + 6 Go Fish /home/bill
  x-terminal-emulator -T Go Fish -e sh -c '/usr/games/fish;echo;echo PRESS
 ENT+ 8 Mille Bornes /home/bill
  x-terminal-emulator -T Mille Bornes -e /usr/games/mille
 + 10 Xpatience2 Exec exec /usr/games/xpat2

 There is 3 problems:
 1) 0 is not the first entry, that break firstentry().
 2) The numbers are all even.
 3) They are not sorted.

OK, so apparently the index is computed in menuentry::postprocess()
before the menu is sorted, that is why aBridge is first.
(It is last in ASCII order, but first after ucfirst()).

Here a patch that should fix the issue. Sorry it took so long...

Morten, could you check if I follow the C++ usage ?

Cheers,

Bug#318820: postgresql-8.0: listen_addresses shouldn't bind to all interfaces

2005-09-26 Thread Peter Eisentraut
I want to add what the idea behind this setting is:

The authentication checks in pg_hba.conf are done at a rather late stage of
creating the connection. If the server accepts TCP connections from anyone
on the Internet, it's trivial to DOS the PostgreSQL server. The current
installation default in the Debian package is therefore a gaping security
hole. The default setting is therefore to not make the database server
visible on external interfaces. The comparison with Apache and SSH is flawed
because those services are designed to operate on the open Internet whereas
PostgreSQL is definitely not designed for that.

Cool...

I do not understand why you are waiting to upload a fix just because
s390 doesn't build. mysql-dfsg 4.0.24-10 is still vulnerable in unstable
 for all architectures.

(actually I got it wrong, it was powerpc not s390, but doesn't matter here)

mysql-server (4.0.x) has been superceeded by mysql-server-4.1 which provides
an empty transitional package called mysql-server since version 4.1.14
which struggles to get into testing though. Since then the mysql-dfsg source
is only used to produce libmysqlclient12 which should be replaced by
libmysqlclient14 soon (release-team asked me to hold that transition back
so I wait until the latest 4.1 is in testing and then ask again).

As the security bugs do only affect the server I did not upload a new
4.0.x version to unstable.

As stable do contain 4.0.x I did not add a not found 4.0.24 to the BTS.
I know that this is not easily visible so if there is any tag combination
that would help you, please let me know.

(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=322133 contains a matrix
of all used mysql versions since woody)

bye,

No, close your bugs in the changelog. This avoids massively wasting my

mysql-dfsg-4.1 was affected and needs a DSA. Would it be correct if I
close the bug in unstable also the bug is still present in stable?
(I could have used found tags though).

The CAN-2005-2558 is mentioned in the debian/changelog of the unstable
 uploads for reference.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] points to the party responsible for maintaining the

A buffer overflow vulnerability exists within Firefox version 1.0.6 and

When reporting bugs against Epiphany or Galeon, please check whether
Mozilla, their engine, is affected. In the future, the engine of these
browsers might switch from Mozilla to Firefox though.

The problem seems to be when a hostname which has all dashes causes the
NormalizeIDN call in nsStandardURL::BuildNormalizedSpec to return true,
but is sets encHost to an empty string.

This is fixed in Mozilla 1.7.12 by disabling IDN and/or installing a
 patch as explained at:

I agree that this is not a bug in the package, BUT you didn't care to
mention this in the bug report. I did check for help there first. So how
should I know?

showed the relevant part of the output:

First of all I didn't report the bug, just in case you didn't notice.
All I did was give you the information you asked for in the bug report,
namely the kernel version.

 | /proc/misc: No entry for device-mapper found
 | Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?
 | Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
 | Incompatible libdevmapper 1.01.04 (2005-08-02)(compat) and kernel driver

I did not get this message. I only got that one line that was mentioned
in the original bug report. If Noel, who reported the bug, or anyone
else, whould have run something else to get this message, how about
telling them?

Finally one last question, how come it worked with the old version. I
never loaded the dm module by hand, but still it works with sarge, but
not in etch or sid. I would say it might have to do with you removing
the init script that used to modprobe dm_mod, don't you think?

I see that libcrypto++ previously failed to build with an internal
compiler error. Did you try to build it with GCC 3.4 for that reason? If
so, you can revert that change -- gcc 4.0 has seen a recent update which
   should fix those ICEs.

Are you positive about this, Wouter?

I have confirmed that five builds which previously failed now complete
successfully (the three upstream PRs I filed plus flac and zlib). Does
that mean they'll all succeed? Maybe not; but as this change lets 40
previously-failing tests from the test suite now succeed, I'm pretty
sure many of them will now work.

libcrypto++ suffered the famous in cp_expr_size, at
cp/cp-objcp-common.c:101 ICE that affects arm, m68k and hppa; this
is Debian Bug#323133 and upstream PR21123, which doesn't seem at all
   like fixed?

Okay, then I've probably been too optimistic about it in this particular
case.

Is seems the update is being applied to template0. It is not possible=20
to connect to template0. That might explain the missing success message
  on template0.

Actually the post installation script makes an effort to temporarily
enable connection to template0, apply the update, and revert the
enable connection change. This works for the common case.

The packages in sid are more robust against that, will print a better
error message, and not cause the whole package installation to fail,
so I'm closing this bug in sid.

Since we can not fix such bugs in stable releases, can you please
temporarily change your ACLs/configuration to allow template0
connection to user postgres in your setup, reconfigure the
postgresql package (dpkg --configure -a) and check whether it succeeds
 then?

 Thanks,

unusable, and seems as though it would probably be fixable just by
recompiling. It's been sitting for 35 days.

Another bug is important, also seems easy to fix, and even includes a
patch. It's been sitting for 321 days!

Even the third, minor bug would probably also be fixed just by correcting
the other two. It's been sitting for 500 days!

Has SAM been abandoned?

Bug#329800: kernel-image-2.6.8-2: NFSv3 Failure with 2.6.8-2, apparently fixed in 2.6.11

 Hello!

On the 2.6.8-2 kernel-tree, apparently there were a number of NFSv3
problems introduced which Linux later fixed in 2.6.11, or maybe earlier
in 2.6.9. This causes a NFSv3 mount from a Services for Unix 3.5 server
to successfully mount, but hang whenever a 'ls' is performed on that
directory or you attempt to 'cd' to it. I tested this with a 2.6.11
kernel pacgae from unstable and had no problems, nor did I have a
problem with a Fedora Core 4 machine which is also running 2.6.11. The
condition can be worked aroung by switching to 2.6.11, using NFSv2.

Hi,

the situation with 2.6.8 is basically that upstream has moved
so far since that release, that backporting is typically difficult.

If you want to look into making a backport, and it is reasonably
clean, I would be more than happy to look at incoporate such
a think in sarge updates of 2.6.8 (that kernel is not long
for the testing/unstable trees).

However, we are really encouraging people to try 2.6.12 (and soon 2.6.13).
2.6.12 is in testing and unstable. And a sarge backport is available,
though we haven't found a permanent home for it yet.

Bug#326970: dictd: Dictdconfig improvement managing dictionary names

2005-09-26 Thread Aleksey Cheusov

The problem is that, given the way that the locales package works
(with locales built by locale-gen), there is no means that I know of
to create a dependency on there being a UTF-8 locale built.

TP I don't understand why locales are necessary to allow dictd to read
TP UTF-8 dictionnaries. It's possible to read UTF-8 mails on an ISO-8859
TP only system, so why dictd cannot do the same ?

It easy. dictd prior to 1.10.1 uses libc functions
isw{alpha,alnum,...} and tow{upper,lower}
which are locale sensitive.
If you dislike this, upgrade dictd to the latest versions.

TP BTW, who is the upstream author of dictd ?

TP Is there a CVS somewhere ?

Ok, thanks. Kirk, can you upgrade the dictd Debian package to the latest
version of dictd (at least 1.10.1) ? This should allow to close the bugs
related to the locale issue.

Bug#326970: dictd: Dictdconfig improvement managing dictionary names

2005-09-26 Thread Kirk Hilliard
Hi Thomas, Ludovic,

Ludovic:
Are you sure the sort order is problematic?

Thomas:
Quite strange, since revo works perfectly with dictd, word search
 through indexes works.

It is only the 00-* headers missorted. This will have to be fixed,
but it is a minor thing. There is definitely a bug in dictd itself,
keeping it from reading the 00-* headers (even when properly sorted).

Thomas:
I don't understand why locales are necessary to allow dictd to read
 UTF-8 dictionaries.

AFAIK, dictd only uses the locale provided to determine sort order for
doing its search of the index. It might be possible to incorporate
UTF-8 character order into dictd itself. This would not be as elegant
from a programing standpoint, and Aleksey might not accept it
upstream, but it could be offered and might could be kept as a Debian
specific patch to avoid the UFT-8 packaging problems.

Thomas:

BTW, who is the upstream author of dictd ? Is there a CVS somewhere ?
 Mailing-list ?

Rik Faith wrote it, but Aleksey Cheusov is doing most of the current
development. dict.org still has some resources, including the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list, but CVS is now on SourceForge.
See sourceforge.net/projects/dict.

I had hoped to have addressed this by now, but was surprised with
another short trip, and will be returning home this Wednesday. I will
try to have it fixed this week.

In the meanwhile, a question.

I see:
  revo.en.inx
  revo.eo.inx
  revo.es.inx
  revo.la.inx
  revo.tr.inx
  revo.cs.inx
  revo.de.inx
  revo.fr.inx
  revo.ru.inx

I assume that that revo.eo.inx is the Esperanto index, and that all
others are translation indices.

``dict -D revo.eo abako ''(should this be simply revo?) returns the entire
entry, including all translations.

``dict -D revo.en abacus'' returns the same entire entry. Is this
desired, or should it omit all translations but the anglaj?

Do you plan a single revo package, or one package per language, so I
can easily install just the English translations? (For example, the
revo-en package, which includes just the revo.en index, could depend
upon the main revo package which includes the dictionary database and
probably the revo.eo index.)

Kirk
