Bug#361190: xfonts-jmk: ISO-10646-1 font doesn't use (accented) characters from ISO-8859-1 neep font
Package: xfonts-jmk Version: 3.0-9 Severity: normal Hi It looks like the glyphs for latin1 accented characters (e.g. LATIN SMALL LETTER I WITH ACUTE = U+00ED = í) in the ISO-10646-1 neep font also came from the 10x20 misc-fixed bitmap font, even though there's a version of the glyph available in the ISO-8859-1 neep font. I've been using the neep alt font for the last few years, and the resulting inconsistency in accented characters is really annoying. Would it be possible for the ISO-10646-1 font to always use glyphs from the neep fonts when they are available? Bug#361048: locales: locale settings lost after upgrade
Yes, I waited for shadow to look at this file, and checked that locales smoothly upgrades, at least when you log on a console. It is obvious that I did not check with X display managers, will file bugs now. Can you please tell what other packages are misbehaving? I will keep this bug open for now to not have similar bug reports. Thanks. Isn't /etc/environment a config file belonging to libpam-modules? (Isn't this the whole reason for the feature request of using a different common config file for locale information?) In that case, what business does the locales package have editing this file at all? This is arguably a severity: serious policy violation for munging the config files of other packages. It's fine to create a new config file and populate it using /etc/environment as input, but you shouldn't be deleting any information from the old file. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. With some luck i can persuade upstream to split up into different tarballs. That would be very much appreciated. :) I'm still chasing down a few more packages for the mysql transition (mostly packages that aren't binNMU-safe), so it will still be a couple of days before this goes into testing. Bug#361189: debian-installer installs modutils, not module-init-tools, with 2.6 kernel
Quoting Peder Chr.Nørgaard ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: debian-installer Severity: normal This report is about debian-installer etch beta 2. I used the debian-installer as expert, which installs a 2.6 kernel. The installation ended up with package modutils, not module-init-tools. I don't think this is a problem before you start playing with your own modules - but it is wrong, package modutils is related to 2.2 and 2.4 kernels. I suppose you installed a standard base system, or one of the tasks. Anyway, deciding whether this or that package is to be installed is not D-I decision...this is driven by the package being part of the base system or not. This is why I suggest reassigning this to the relevant package, ie the one you want to see as part of the standard install. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#361003: debian-installer: installer fails to configure sound in a way that works with KDE
So now my problem is solved. However, I would suggest that this is really a task for debian-installer - either simply unconditional installation of alsa (and the newest discover), or give the user an option to install sound. As answered in another bug report, deciding whether this or that package should be part of the basic install is not D-I job. An option would be suggesting a new task for Basic sound support...or include the ALSA stuff in the desktop task. I personnally favor the second option. Hi, I read #361091 and noticed that after my 2nd time of apt-get upgrade, the LANG variable was commented out in /etc/default/locale. Specifically, the following preferences: font.name.*.x-central-euro font.name.*.tr font.name.*.x-unicode font.name.*.x-user-def For entries where * is monospace, changing the preference value from Courier to monospace solves the font display issue. Package: emacsen-common Version: 1.4.17 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch The 00debian-vars.el seems to have written in early Emacs 19.x days, so I rewrote it using modern 20.x structures. The improvements include: - Better name (+ namespace) to reflect function usage (for C-h f) - Function descriptions (for C-h f) - Better file treatment (if /etc/mailname includes leading whitespaces thet are now ignored too) The changes have been tested. Jari 2006-04-07 Jari Aalto jari aalto A T cante net * 00debian-vars.el (debian-startup-file-as-string): Renamed. Was `debian-file-string'. The new name better reflacts what the function is doing (cf. C-h f listing). Used namespace prefix `debian-startup-*', to better avoind future name clashes. Rewrote function to use standard `with-temp-buffer'. (debian-startup-buffer-remove-whitespace): Renamed. Was `debian-clean-mailname'. Changed `search-string' to a generic `re-search-forward'. Now cleans all whitespace, before, after, and newlines. Bug#361206: installer support for LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI
Package: install Severity: wishlist I would like to get support for the following SCSI adapter enabled in debian installers: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI I believe this device driver to be accepted as of 2.6.15-rc5 by kernel and needs the modules from kernel directory drivers / message / fusion. After quick investigation these modules seems to detect the device and attach it in the similar way as drivers from driver / scsi in the kernel tree. However if there are some other modules needed for LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 1030 device, I'd like to enable these too of course. I would like to ask if modification made upon this request will be projected to 2.6 boot.img installer at http://people.debian.org/ ~stappers/d-i/images/daily/sparc64/netboot/2.6/ as well as this is my only way for installation at this moment. I'm ready to test updated installer upon your request. Thank you. Best Regards, Karel Panek -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#361203: python-codespeak-lib: consider renaming the package to mention pylib
Package: python-codespeak-lib Severity: minor Hi, I'm currently working on pypy with people involved in the py library from codespeak, and they noted that the Debian package name was a bit strange. They suggested renaming it to something like python-codespeak-pylib, or python-cs-pylib, the core idea being that pylib should appear somewhere in the package name, since this is how it is commonly refered to. Bug#361205: installer support for LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI
Package: kernel-wedge Severity: wishlist I would like to get support for the following SCSI adapter enabled in debian installers: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI I believe this device driver to be accepted as of 2.6.15-rc5 by kernel and needs the modules from kernel directory drivers / message / fusion. Trouble? Bug#361153: extra call to dh_installcatalogs

I don't think this really breaks anything, but you may want to remove the explicit call to dh_installcatalogs and set your build dependency next time you upload. If you build-depend on cdbs (= 0.4.37), you could also take advantage of a little better ant support and drop the ANT_HOME variable and ant-launcher.jar from DEB_JARS. This is a really good news! Bug#361214: linux-image-2.6.15-1-sparc64-smp: RED state exception crashes on sparc64 SMP
Package: linux-image-2.6.15-1-sparc64-smp Version: 2.6.15-8 Severity: important This error repeatadly happens, and is the main reason sparc is no longer considered a release architecture, but I could not find a bug filed for it. Running with a serial consoled logged to another system, I was able to catch the error messages. They arn't completely consistant, so I'm including them all below. (A couple of weeks worth on my sparc pbuilder system.) Speculation: there has been a report that heavy disk I/O causes this problem. Since many of the messages have truncated kernel fault messages, I guess that the system buffers a kernel fault message, then tries to dump core causing a fault in the fault handler. Bug#361212: mailman: security upgrade errors out with confusing and ineffective instructions
Package: mailman Version: 2.1.5-8sarge2 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable or causes data loss Tags: sarge Attempting to install the recent security update (v2.1.5-8sarge2) errors out with the following message: Old queue files present The directory /var/lib/mailman/qfiles contains files. It needs to be empty for the upgrade work properly. Please either flush the queue (by way of mailmanctl start, then stopping it and redoing the upgrade when it is finished) or remove those files. Note that removing the files will lose some emails sent to lists. Losing emails isn't really an option for me (or many other folks running sarge boxes, I'd expect) - this is a production server with a number of live mailing lists, so I attempt to follow the instructions to flush the queue, by way of mailmanctl start, then stopping it and redoing the ugprade when itis finished. However: 1 - mailmanctl isn't in root's $PATH - it is in /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl It either needs to be in the $PATH or the upgrade instructions need to contain the full path. If that were the worst problem here, this bug would be minor, but: 2 - # /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl start The master qrunner lock could not be acquired because it appears as if another master qrunner is already running. Well. That didn't do jack. Maybe mailmanctl needs to be run during the upgrade. So I attempt to run the same command in another window when the original warning comes up, and receive: 3 - # /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl start Starting Mailman's master qrunner. Okay. I guess it started. Then I'm supposed to stop it and redo the upgrade when it is finished. A literal reading of the instructions would seem to say I'm supposed to stop mailmanctl (just after starting it?), with /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl stop I guess, wait for the stopping to finish, then redo the upgrade. That doesn't make any sense, but for completeness, when I try to do that... 4 - # /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl stop Shutting down Mailman's master qrunner Is it stopped? It seems to say it is. ps still show mailman processes, but no matter how long I wait (well, withing reason), they don't go away. Running /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl stop again later produces: 5 - # /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl stop Shutting down Mailman's master qrunner No child with pid: 12094 [Errno 3] No such process Stale pid file removed. Still there are mailman processes... Running /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl stop a third (or subsequent) time produces: 6 - # /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl stop Shutting down Mailman's master qrunner PID unreadable in: /var/run/mailman/mailman.pid [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/run/mailman/mailman.pid' Is qrunner even running? Well, accoring to ps it still is. Huh, dead end. 7 - When is mailmanctl start finished? Assuming the literal reading of the upgrade instructions was not correct and backing up to step 3... trying to make more sense of the instructions, maybe I'm supposed to run /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl start, then stop and redo the upgrade when /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl start is finished? How do I know when it is finished? Waiting reasonable amounts of time and then retrying the upgrade still gives me the same original error message. As far as I can tell, mailman 2.1.5-8sarge2 is either uninstallable/unusable, or causes data loss (removing the files will lose some emails sent to lists). I think this security upgrade needs to be fixed such that it can be installed, without loss of mail, ideally automatically taking care of /var/lib/mailman/qfiles, but at *least* containing reasonably clear, working instructions for doing so. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.8-12-amd64-k8 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages mailman depends on: ii apache [httpd]1.3.33-6sarge1 versatile, high-performance HTTP s ii apache2-mpm-prefork [http 2.0.54-5 traditional model for Apache2 ii cron 3.0pl1-86 management of regular background p ii debconf 1.4.30.13 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-22 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii logrotate 3.7-5 Log rotation utility ii postfix [mail-transport-a 2.1.5-9A high-performance mail transport ii pwgen 2.03-1 Automatic Password generation ii python2.3.5-2An interactive high-level object-o ii ucf 1.17 Update Configuration File: preserv -- debconf information: * mailman/queue_files_present: mailman/default_server_language: en * mailman/gate_news: false * mailman/site_languages: en mailman/used_languages: en *

Bug#361048: locales: locale settings lost after upgrade
[Steve Langasek] Isn't /etc/environment a config file belonging to libpam-modules? (Isn't this the whole reason for the feature request of using a different common config file for locale information?) Yes, this issue is well summarized in http://lists.debian.org/debian-gtk-gnome/2003/09/msg00075.html In that case, what business does the locales package have editing this file at all? As you can imagine, this is exactly what I am trying to fix. Denis

Bug#351663: change to /etc/zsh/zlogin
On Friday 31 March 2006 16:25, you wrote: Attached are 2 versions of patches with 2 competing solutions to do so: 1) modularized_zlogin: this version of csh_login modularizes this file so any zsh scripts dropped into /etc/zsh/zlogin.d are sourced. - IMO this is the preferred solution as: - it can be used by other packages also (e.g. the user-es, and user-de configuration packages could use this to configure things for zsh users) - doesn't clutter the system unnecessarely (though minimally) when desktop-profiles isn't installed . (if this is adopted I'll provide patches for user-es, user-de and similar configuration packags I know of to automate the setup they do for tcsh users) 2) with_bugfix_zlogin: this just adds the shell-snippet needed to fix bug #344030 directly into csh.login Yes, running bash on startup would seem less-than-ideal. The other (modularized) solution has been strongly opposed for other shells in the past (see for example the flame wars regarding sendfile). As a another datapoint: I know that the fish, psh, en zoidberg shells currently provide such a modularized solution. And, more generally, the practice of having modularized configuration files is widespread in Debian packages, to name af few I find on my system: - apache - /etc/apache/conf.d - apt - /etc/apt/conf.d - cron - /etc/cron.{d,hourly,daily,monthly} - bash - /etc/bash_completion.d - discover - /etc/discover.conf.d /etc/discover.d - fish - /etc/fish.d - hotplug - /etc/hotplug/blacklist.d /etc/hotplug.d - libpam - /etc/pam.d - logrotate - /etc/logrotate.d - psh - /etc/pshrc.d - sane - /etc/sane.d - sysv-rc - /etc/rc[0-6S].d /etc/init.d - udev - /etc/udev/rules.d - x11-common - /etc/X11/Xsession.d - zoidberg - /etc/zoidrc.d Some searching on sendfile profile.d site:debian.org yields, the following old threads on devel, which I guess is what you were referring to: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/1998/07/msg02557.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/1999/06/msg00556.html http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2000/06/msg00232.html The arguments against in those threads seem to boil down to: 1) programs shouldn't depend on environment variables to work - this is the use case that everyone is afraid of, note however that it is explicitly forbidden by policy nowadays, so doing so would be an RC bug anyway. Given that there are other use cases (see below), and that this particular use is an RC bug now, the argument obviously is not a good one. - as mentioned above there now is a use-case, were there didn't seem to be one at the time of those threads, I'll explain: Custom Debian Distributions are aimed at a narrower defined set of users then Debian in general. This often allows choices for more specific defaults/settings to be made that would be inappropriate for the regular Debian package or Debian in general. This leads to the creation of configuration packages whose sole purpose is to set up a Debian system with the more specific default configuration suited for the target group. Obviously for this to be possible there needs to be a mechanism to do so. At the cdd-devcamp in malaga last may [1] this topic was discussed and the conclusion was that the used mechanisms for adapting the configuration of a debian-system are (in order of preference): 1) modularized/multilevel configuration (such as a .d directory, or the various config-set stacking mechanisms of the free desktop environments) 2) debconf pre-seeding (con: only works if done before the installation of the preseeded package) 3) use cfengine (or similar frameworks) to change the configuration files themselve (con: can't be done automatically as it conflicts with policy) Regarding the on-login script of the various shells customization is currently needed by the user-es and -de configuration packages, and to fix the corner case bug #344030 of the desktop-profiles configuration framework (which provides management of the config set stacking mechanisms provided by the different desktop environments) 2) the default system environment should be minimal: - this actually becomes an argument for modularization IF a real need is demonstrated by the reasoning that in such a case the modularization means that the extra config is only there when needed, instead of always because it's made part of the configuration shipped by the basic package (even if that configuration disables it in the general case). - note that the modularized_zlogin I provided has a minimal overhead equal to testing for the existence of /etc/zlogin.d when no configuration changes are present, which should be

I don't think this is a problem before you start playing with your own modules - but it is wrong, package modutils is related to 2.2 and 2.4 kernels. This is not really possible as linux-image-2.6.15-1-486 (and other kernel images too) depend on module-init-tools. So, if it were not available, this should result in an installation failure. So, bugs #360327 (your O bugsreport), #361151 (my RFA) and #361155 (my ITP for sgf2dg) are related (and also #361158 and #361159 that are ITP for related perl libraries). If you agree that I adopt your package, I will make the sgf2dg source package create a sgf2tex binary package with only a depend on sgf2dg (for smooth transition). I will also add your changelog in my package so that we can still keep a record of your work on sgf2tex. What do you think of my proposal ? Bug#361235: module-assistant: Outdated po files
Package: module-assistant Severity: minor Tags: l10n patch Hi, In the po directory of the current source package: $ msgfmt --statistics fr.po 103 translated messages. $ make [...] $ msgfmt --statistics fr.po 100 translated messages, 2 fuzzy translations, 1 untranslated message. This is problematic for the l10n infrastructure, as it doesn't allow us to detect outdated translations (for example see http://www.debian.org/intl/l10n/po/fr) and the translators have to understand the build process before starting a new translation. The common solution is to update the po files in the clean target, so in your case by applying the following change in po/Makefile: - clean: + clean: $(POFILES) I would also recommand to add the following line: .PHONY: $(POFILES) This is needed because of the following situation: day 1: update of messages.pot day 2: beginning of a new translation, for example fr.po, by fetching the messages.pot of the day 1 day 3: new update of messages.pot day 4: end of the translation of fr.po According to the timestamps, fr.po is newer than messages.pot, so the update made on day 3 won't be merged into the new fr.po. Bug#361238: nvidia-modules-i386: nvidia-kernel-2.4.27-3-* packages would be nice to have in Sarge
Package: nvidia-modules-i386 Severity: wishlist After the sarge security upgrade of kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686 to kernel-image-2.4.27-3-686 (DSA 1018-1), the nvidia-kernel-2.4.27-2-686 package is no longer useful, but an nvidia-kernel-2.4.27-3-686 would be needed. Of course, this package is non-free, so no security update support has been offered. Building such a package on one's own is not too hard using make-kpkg and nvidia-kernel-source. However, there are probably many Nvidia graphics cards users, in addition to those at our institute, who would much appreciate if an nvidia-kernel-2.4.27-3-686 package could be built and added to Sarge. The same naturally applies to -386, -k7 etc. Many thanks for a nice package in any case, Kenrick Bingham -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-3-686 Locale: LANG=C, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#361239: nagios2 cannot start, if /var is on a tempfs
Package: nagios2 Version: 2.0-1 The process nagios2 cannot be started, if the /var directory is on a tempfs, because the directory /var/run/nagios2 doesn't exists. This directory will be created in the nagios2-common.postinst script. After a reboot, the directory doesn't exists anymore. A second aspect is the hardcoded path in the postinst script: install -d -onagios -gnagios -m750 /var/run/nagios2 and the startup script will create the path dynamically from the lock_file statement in the Nagios configuration file: THEPIDFILE=$(grep lock_file $NAGIOSCFG | awk '{print $2}' FS==) After a change of the lock_file statement, the nagios process cannot start anymor. Bug#361219: patch
On Fri, Apr 07, 2006 at 06:27:25AM -0500, Dirk Eddelbuettel wrote: I am still a bit suspicious of your brute force replacement of -fpic. Or do you know for sure that gcc 4.* requires it? Should it then be conditional on gcc/g++ versions be larger than a threshold? It is not related to the compiler version. -fpic is documented to have limitations on some systems and is not reliable on some of them for larger software. The usage of -fPIC enables the use of other relocation types which don't have this limitations (or much larger). On most arches it don't make any difference at all. Bug#361241: wmaker: icons (minimized apps) behave weird (disappear, forget workspace, overlap)
Package: wmaker Version: 0.92.0-5.2 Severity: important The behaviour of icons (minimized applications) is severely broken when automatic placement is switched on. * When switching the workspace icons often stick thereby covering (and hiding) icons on the workspace one is switching to. * After minimizing an application, clicking (singly or doubly) on one of the icons causes all of them to reshuffle, usually in a way that the icon in question changes its place (which is extremely annoying). * Icon placement ignores the dock so that icons disappear behind it/cover it. All of these suddenly appeared about a year ago (I think with 91.0). The problems are not architecture-specific since they occur in exactly the same way on my pentium machine. Wiping the complete configuration (rm -r ~/GNUstep) did not make a change either. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-powerpc Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages wmaker depends on: ii cpp 4:4.0.2-2 The GNU C preprocessor (cpp) ii debianutils 2.15.3 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii libc6 2.3.6-3GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfontconfig12.3.2-1.1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.1.10-1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libwraster3 0.92.0-5.2 Shared libraries of Window Maker r ii libx11-6 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext6 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxft2 2.1.8.2-3 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxinerama1 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4 X Window System multi-head display ii libxrender1 1:0.9.0.2-1X Rendering Extension client libra ii zlib1g1:1.2.3-11 compression library - runtime wmaker recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
