Bug#350441: Possible cause for open /etc/logrotate.d/syslog failed

I just had the same error as reported by Rickard.
I my case, the error is because I have installed syslog-ng (I don't
appreciate opening syslog to DoS attacks just to have a loghost).

Bug#362701: Hiccups on kernels without modules

2006-04-15 Thread Joachim Durchholz

Package: bastille
Version: 1:2.1.1-11

Hi,

My Linux kernel is running without modules or module tools, for security
reasons.

Consequently, all modprobe calls fail.

I'm not sure whether the lack of module support has any serious
consequences; I did get some funny reactions out of the package but
couldn't/didn't reproduce them.

Bastille does emit the annoying message
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.6.8/modules.dep
  (No such file or directory)
four times though.

Jo

I'm guessing either the 'freeguide' package is configured funny,

 Hope this helps...

Indeed, I think that I spoke too soon: I had Azureus 2.4.0.2 up, but the

Which gij version did you use? I've seen that problem with gij-4.0, but
for me it worked with gij-4.1.

Moving the jar file out of the way didn't seem to change that. :-(

Azureus does currently run using GIJ, which I think is great (!),

Are you able to correctly use Azureus with gij, without any serious
 flaws?

Yes.

Bug#296811: SSH hanging issues

2006-04-15 Thread Vaclav Smilauer
I ran into this exact problem today with 1:3.4p1-1.woody.3. It's
undoubtedly a server-side MTU issue. I was able to do

ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] /sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 1000

and after a brief pause, everything works again.

Adrian, is machine the server you are connecting to or is it the
router that does NAT?

If it is the machine where ssh server runs, can someone knowledgeable
explain if there is a way to achieve working config by tuning the NAT
machine only?

If it is the NAT machine (router, firewall), is eth0 the WAN interface
or the local LAN?

BTW I am able to ssh with linux port of putty (without X11, though) and
scp with winscp over wine. How odd.

Good luck to everybody...

Bug#362708: acpi_cpufreq and snd_atiixp conflict

2006-04-15 Thread Ahmad Khayyat

Package:
linux-image-2.6.15-1-686-smp
Severity: normal

When acpi_cpufreq kernel module is loaded, alsa would randomly break.
The
application accessing sound sometimes hangs and cpu usage gets 100%,
and
sometimes it works fine. Multiple applications accessing sound at the
same
time often causes the problem to appear, but a single application could
too.
Without acpi_cpufreq loaded, alsa works perfectly fine with single or
multiple applications accessing sound at the same time.

I am not sure, though, if this is a problem with my acpi. This is a
Toshiba
Satellite A70 laptop with atiixp chipset and Pheonix BIOS. The machine
shuts down properly but does not reboot. Reboot completes the shutdown
but
stops there before actually turning off the machine or rebooting it.
LEDs
stay on and I can hear the fan.

I used to use p4_clockmod scaling driver just fine. acpi_cpufreq could
not
be loaded in previous kernels. This is the first kernel in which I
managed
to load acpi_cpufreq, and it seems to work fine, except for the sound
problem.

nor do i want to waste cycles for the user data.

That's your local decision which you are free to make and to configure
locally. Thanks to the split config, you don't even need to change any
conffile of aide. Just place your rule in the appropriate config
directory.

The next aide release will include an example saying how to do this.
Basically, it's a one-liner shell script saying

getent passwd | awk '{ if( $3 = 1000) { print ! $6 }}' FS=:

which will exclude the home directories of all local accounts with
uid 1000 from the aide check.

Greetings
Marc

Fine ;)

Maybe adding a small additional sentence to the NEWS.Debian about the
fact that aide will run significantly longer now (especially in the

Yes, I agree. Done in svn.

Bug#362709: yate_0.8.7+cvs20050604-4 FTBFS: build-dep on removed libortp2-dev

2006-04-15 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: yate
Version: 0.8.7+cvs20050604-4
Severity: serious

The yate package can't be built from source in unstable because the -dev
package for libortp seems to be have changed its name gratuitously: yate
build-depends on libortp2-dev, but only libortp4-dev is available.

I say that the name change seems to be gratutious, because the APIs exported
by the two sets of headers don't seem to diverge very much. This package is
almost certainly better off with a single libortp-dev package, instead of
making the package name track an soname that has nothing to do with the
exported API.

But in any case, after updating the build-dependency to point to
libortp4-dev, yate fails to build with the problem in bug #358131; so I
can't confirm whether libortp2-dev and libortp4-dev are truly compatible.

Bug#362693: Xlockmore uninstallable

 Subject: xlockmore: uninstallable

*** Please type your report below this line ***

After a recent dist-upgrade, which included an upgrade of Xorg, xlockmore
is uninstallable. It was removed in the dist-upgrade and when attempting
to reinstall the following messages appear:

Yes, the removal of /usr/X11R6/bin/ needs to be an all-or-nothing
transition, because the symlink that puts this directory in the user's path,
/usr/bin/X11, is being pointed elsewhere in X11R7. The x11-common package
now conflicts with all other packages that install to /usr/X11R6/bin, so
xlockmore needs to be updated to install its files under /usr instead of
under /usr/X11R6.

It also means that in the end we can provide a better upgrade path, by
turning /usr/X11R6/bin into a compat symlink pointing to /usr/bin so
absolute path references continue to work for etch.

Cheers,

Hi,

RLIMIT_MEMLOCK. For example :

syslog:Apr 15 10:05:47 shadowland kernel: grsec: denied resource

/sbin/init[init:1] uid/euid:0/0 gid/egid:0/0

I have made some research on google and I have found that it is a ntpd
bug and that a solution exist (a patch) :
https://ntp.isc.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=477

I hava also search the Debian changelog of ntp but I have not found any
reference of this bug

Maybe could you apply this patch in the next release of the package

Thanks

Nicolas

2006-04-15 Thread Adriaan Peeters

Hi,

We have some nice people over at debian-legal. Perhaps you could ask
them for advice regarding the GPL/LGPL issue?
I also noticed the PLUGINS ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE DERIVED WORK!!!
string in almost every source file. Perhaps ask for advice on this as
well.

It would be nice to have xmms2 in the archive since I am preparing a
package that will (when available) depend on it.

Bug#362718: xserver-xorg-video-s3: driver lacks support for 88c864 chip

2006-04-15 Thread David Goodenough
Package: xserver-xorg-video-s3
Version: 1:0.3.5.4-3
Severity: important

I used to use the S3 driver from XFree86 3.x when running XFree86 4.x
and xorg 6.x, but that no longer seems possible with 7.x. So I tried
to use the S3 driver that comes with 7.x, and that does not seem to
recognise the 88c864 chip. Using strings the nearest I can find is
the 964 chips, not the 864. As the machine I am running on (an old
IBM 750 does not seem to be supported by the Vesa driver either, this
only leaves the VGA driver, and even that does not work properly on
this chip.

Yes this is a very old machine, but it does serve a useful purpose
and it would be really useful if the 864 chip support could be
included in this driver.

This (broken; see #362223) symlink was created by xorg itself when I
upgraded earlier this week. I am not the only one experiencing this
problem, at least one user has reported it on debian-user.

Hmm, this was supposed to have been fixed in xserver-xorg 1:7.0.11 by
removing the symlink in question. :/ So there are two bugs here --
xserver-xorg needs to drop the symlink, and x11-common needs to bump its
versioned conflict with xserver-xorg...

The first can be fixed by just removing the debian/xserver-xorg.links file
from the source package.

The second can be fixed by changing the Conflicts to xserver-xorg ( 1:7.0.12)
-- assuming it's fixed in the next maintainer upload.

Bug#362724: ddclient: Timeout is not set when creating a socket

2006-04-15 Thread Thomas Antepoth
Package: ddclient
Version: 3.6.2-3.1
Severity: important

In line 1413 there is a socket created without specifying
a timeout parameter.

This might lead to a stalled read() when the connection drops
during the network operation and to a hanging ddclient
process which does not update the ip addresses any more.

On 4 Sites we observed about 1 hang per month.

Suggestion:
Change this line 1413:

} elsif (! defined($sd = IO::Socket::INET-new(PeerAddr = $peer, PeerPort =
$port, Proto = 'tcp'))) {

to:

} elsif (! defined($sd = IO::Socket::INET-new(PeerAddr = $peer, PeerPort =

And unfortunately, a look at the svn repo shows that there is almost *no*
revision history for trunk/debian/xorg/debian/xserver-xorg.config.in; or
else I would be happy to provide you with a quick diff to revert this
change. :/

Bug#362745: wpasupplicant: Managed mode leaves wpa_supplicant running if ifup fails

2006-04-15 Thread Felix Homann
Package: wpasupplicant
Version: 0.4.8-3
Severity: normal

If ifup fails on an interface configured to use wpasupplicant's managed
mode a wpa_supplicant process is left running in the background.

The same happens if you interrupt ifup by pressing CTRL-C before it has
finished.

This has a major effect if you're trying to set up managed mode: If the first
attempt fails the second attempt will fail, too.

How to reproduce this behavior:

Break a working managed mode setup by commenting out the wpa-passphrase
line:

# /etc/network/interfaces:
iface wlan inet dhcp
wpa-driver wext
wpa-ssid yourssid
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
#wpa-passphrase Iwonttellyou
wpa-proto WPA

ifup the interface and wait until ifup gives in. You will still have a
wpa_supplicant running in the background

Now, uncomment the wpa-passphrase line and try to ifup wlan again. It will
fail.

Regards,

Felix

Bug#362685: x11-common: postinst failure

2006-04-15 Thread Steve Langasek

I'll delete the symlink manually as a workaround.

Very much *not* recommended! This lets x11-common's postinst complete,
making /usr/X11R6/bin a symlink to /usr/bin, but dpkg will think
xserver-xorg still owns /usr/X11R6/bin/X -- so when *that* symlink is
removed in the next version of the package, I think you'll miss having
/usr/bin/X disappear!

Petteri, in your case this just means that xfs-xtt will be removed anyway,
because that package has been discontinued in etch -- so you'll want to just
go ahead and remove it from your system, and replace it with xfs once xfs...
once there's a version of xfs that x11-common doesn't conflict with.

A little detective work shows that it is xfce4-session trying to

I see you say in your xsession-errors so I'm guessing that means it's
not fatal and that you do indeed get into xfce (I'm too much of a coward
to upgrade right now :))

Given we can't build much and get it into unstable at the moment we
can't fix this just yet I'm afraid.

count is 33 additional conflicts after sifting out the ones that are already
conflicted with transitively.

Bug#362755: xorg: not setting MTRR range register for framebuffer to write-combining

2006-04-15 Thread Zlatko Calusic
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.0.11
Severity: normal

Starting with Xorg 7.0, X server is not setting MTRR range register
for framebuffer to write-combining which means that display output is
twice slower than before (or using twice as much CPU, depending on the
view). Everything worked correctly up to and including 6.9. Setting it
manually works but it would be nice to fix it so that X server takes
care of it automatically once again. There is no interesting output in
Xorg.0.log, it's just that line that was present before and reporting
that range is set to write-combining is now missing.

Bug#362754: Removal of RC5 and MDC2 algorithms is not clearly documented

2006-04-15 Thread Ilya Konstantinov

Package: libssl0.9.8

Version: 0.9.8a-8

Although the library is modified from its default form of including RC5
and MDC2, there's no README describing those changes clearly to
developers. This is very problematic since the removal of the algorithms
modifies the library's exported functions.

In addition, the EVP_CipherInit(3) manpage, when mentioning the
problematic ciphers, should say they were disabled.

Bug#362722: Xorg Encoding Files at Wrong Location

is that I can't use gbk-0 fonts any more.

Actually, it looks in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/encodings, not
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings.

XSF, libfontenc needs a rebuild with:

Package: kdebase-kio-plugins

Hi all!

First let me thank you for your great jog with those packages!

Then, since the very last KDE upgrade, I got a weird bug: I have two
NFS drives in my fstab that are shown in my desktop.

But while previously, I could mount them without trouble, now if I mount
drive A, and then drive B, ony drive B is shown correctly as mounted,
and I cannot browse drive A via system:/media/nfs while it is well
mounted and working in standard path on my file system.

On 4 Sites we observed about 1 hang per month.

Makes sense.

 Suggestion:
 Change this line 1413:

 $port, Proto = 'tcp'))) {

 to:

 } elsif (! defined($sd = IO::Socket::INET-new(PeerAddr = $peer, PeerPort =

This still applies in version 3.6.7, I just changed my local working
copy and uploaded a new package with the changes.

xresprobe probably needs documentation, but it was only ever intended to
be an external tool. Most of the reason why it wasn't in the
xfree86/xorg package when I made it was because doing uploads of the
monolith were very painful.

If you can get away with doing DDC, then you're right, you don't need a
driver. But if we can't, and need to call Xorg -probe and grep the
logfile, then we obviously need a driver for that.

idea is also disabled.

Note that all of them have been removed since 0.9.6b-3 (in 2001)
because of patent problems. You really can't say that we
modified the library's exported functions, since it never had
them in the first place. They only existed in non-us, in a
library with different soname.

But maybe we should document this somewhere.

The same happens if you interrupt ifup by pressing CTRL-C before it has
 finished.

This has a major effect if you're trying to set up managed mode: If the first
attempt fails the second attempt will fail, too.

Perhaps we can add a check in ifupdown.sh if we have already tried to
start an instance of wpasupplicant on this interface, and kill it, if it
is. That way we can cope with possible changes in configuration.

Kel, what do you think?

Bug#358671: Preliminary patch

Hi Paul,

I've attached a preliminary patch to add udeb generation based on the
corresponding patch to libusb. I have zero experience with debian build
recipes though, so it should be checked carefully. At least it generates
a udeb containing the libpopt0 .so file for me.
