However, today I finally ran into one that crashes every time, including with running: firefox -safe-mode http://www.brillianceaudio.com/ Doesn't crash for me. Found it, at least for this site. Is there maybe something missing from the Firefox upgrade process to get rid of stuff like this left lingering from disabled extensions? Where was it? $HOME? /etc/? Upgrades shouldn't ever touch anybody's $HOME, although there was a case of an upgrade creating cruft in /root where I agree with the maintainer's decision to remove the cruft on future upgrades if the md5sum was expected... Bug#362064: udev: udev tries to write to an installed, working initrd without asking
On Fri, Apr 14, 2006 at 09:24:22PM +0200, maximilian attems wrote: Having evms call update-initramfs at install time is completely gratuitous, because the system *won't* be set up for evms at the time of the evms postinst: either the update-initramfs will be a complete no-op and have to be repeated later once evms is set up, or it won't be a no-op -- meaning it will likely have done something undesirable, unrelated to evms. update-initramfs isn't a noop, it happily include all the needed evms root support, as evms added its hooks and calls update-initramfs. Aha, I was thinking that these update-initramfs hooks worked the same way as things did in the mkinitrd days -- where things were only added to the image if it was determined that they were useful. So if those hooks are adding their bits to the initramfs unconditionally, you're right; there's no worry about needing to call update-initramfs again by hand. What happens if a package like evms is *removed*? That would certainly break evms-on-root systems. But it would already have broken systems that used evms for filesystems other than the rootfs, so perhaps it's not significant. And this is bad, because all you're doing is covering up bugs. The bug is either: - some package in the chain has broken dependencies, so packages it should depend on are not guaranteed to be in 'installed' state at the time its postinst runs, or linux-image doesn't directly depend on an initramfs-tools hook like udev so i don't understand that point. Well, linux-image does depend on linux-initramfs-tool, which must be satisfied before linux-image is configured. But since multiple packages provide linux-initramfs-tool, it's important that none of these packages allow their scripts to return success when they're not in a configured state. The same goes for the update-initramfs scripts: they shouldn't return success when we know we can't guarantee correct operation. With the current behavior, where you rebuild the initramfs repeatedly and hope it comes out right at the end, you are throwing away very valuable information when it is possible to *know* that an initramfs is not bootable. And once you stop doing that (which isn't acceptable in the first place), you stop needing to update the initramfs separately for every hook because you'll get it right the first time the initramfs is written out! ok this indicates 2 bugs: - initramfs-tools no longer allowed to call update-initramfs - exit 1 if hook script doesn't get it right as linux-image will never depend on the hook itself, there is an high probability that the hook is in state unpacked. Yes, there is a high probability that the hooking package is in state unpacked. I'm not sure this means the hook script must return non-zero, though -- many hook scripts may be usable even before their packages are configured. So I don't see any real benefit to having all of these tools rebuilding the initramfs repeatedly during an upgrade cycle. Theoretically it would be nice to know as soon as a package is installed that it will break the initramfs, but using update-initramfs doesn't do this: the only way to be sure whether a new initramfs is broken is to try to boot from it. Since we can't force reboots during an upgrade (especially not once for each hook!), there is no significant increase in predictability by using this method, and users are better off if the upgrade doesn't touch the existing, working initramfs images at all. third bug: disallowing any hook to rebuild it's initramfs After thinking about all of this, I'm leaning toward the opinion that it makes sense for hooks to automatically rebuild the initramfs on initial install *only*. That gives you the benefits of being able to quickly add support for things like evms and lvm to the existing kernels, without as much risk of destabilizing already-working images. ok, the following hooks install conf files, which may not be unpacked on linux-image upgrade: evms and udev searching the ubuntu bugs for the rationale of the update-initramfs postinst, i get lots of broken upgrades, which were fixed by dpkg-reconfigure linux-image, so agreeing that current state is not optimal and that mkinitramfs needs to get stricter. as example: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/32123 for getting aboves right initramfs-tools needs a solution for simultaneous linux-image and hook upgrades: a) you ensure hook is upacked before linux-image that's the easy one and the hook wouldn't need to do anything. b) hook is unpacked after: according to above leads to broken initramfs generation, thus linux-image is not fully installed breaks potentialy many upgrades Hmm, this can still be handled by having the hooking packages only call update-initramfs on initial install, and making sure that a hook script that's not ready fails explicitly instead of silently. -

To expand on Daniel's closure message: X11R6 is dead, and this directory needs to be removed so it can be replaced with a compatibility symlink. Otherwise, the transition path gets much uglier as we try to track down one-by-one all the tools that reference /usr/X11R6/bin as an absolute path between now and etch's release. So if the file in /usr/X11R6/bin comes from an official package, please tell us the package so x11-common can conflict with it. If it's an unofficial package, update it to install to /usr/bin instead. Bug#362836: webhttrack: HTML templates for web server are in the wrong directory
tag 362836 +pending thank you BTS The Debian policy states Packages must not require the existence of any files in /usr/share/doc/ in order to function. The webhttrack web server uses templates from /usr/share/httrack/html to construct its web pages. That directory is a symlink to /usr/share/doc/httrack/html/server - so the server stops working if the administrator decides to remove /usr/share/doc/httrack. This is indeed a bug - I'm working on the issue. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, I've made a test-case in the form of a simple C program which generates 10 sec of 440 Hz sinus. With a define, it can generate samples at 44.1 kHz or et 48 kHz. Direct output at 48 kHz sounds perfect but output at 44.1 kHz through the alsa rate plugin clearly shows a problem generating high frequencies. I've attached the test case to this mail. For the benefit of anyone reading this bug report, I'll CC the reply and patch I sent to the upstream bugzilla entry: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6394 I think the reason the workaround didn't work was that not both detection routines (block 0 and 1) were moved down in the table. I've attached a patch which moves both of them and updates the comments, I'll forward it to the Debian bug report as well. Bug#355013: initramfs-tools: device mapper device ordering breaks boot (sometimes)
severity 355013 normal stop On Thu, 02 Mar 2006, Christian Weeks wrote: I use LVM on all my disks. I swapped an old laptop disk into another laptop for testing and my laptop now fails to boot normally but rather drops into the busybox. An analysis of this problem indicates that there are issues with LILO, the initramfs and/or the device mapper. Here's what appears to be happening. I run lilo, and (after spinning the CPU for about 30-60 seconds!) it deduces that my LVM disk cweekslap/root has id FE00 (I am not sure this is correct, however). So it spits this onto the command line. With a single disk in the laptop we will now boot correctly. I add in the second disk and at boot time, for some reason, the secondary disk (helenlap/home!) is now device FE00. Of course helenlap/home is not a valid root disk (it never was) and the system drops to busybox when it can't find init. I have recovered the situation temporarily with one of three fixes: 1. Use a boot parameter root=/dev/mapper/cweekslap-root 2. remount /dev/mapper/cweekslap-root at the /root mountpoint in the initram disk 3. recreate the /dev/root with mknod /dev/root b 254 2 ok, adding discs works much better with grub. lowering the severity as lilo is not default. but please become familiar with the carriage return on your keyboard and format mails to ~80 columns. can you paste your lilo.conf? Nothing is able to work permanently though. I can't make a lilo root= option stick- it turns into numbers. have you tried to use the append=root=/dev/mapper/cweekslap-root instead and without the root lilo.conf param? afaik that is the way that is recommended for evms on lilo too see end http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=357538 sorry for the late reply regards -- maks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#362894: x11-common: font system completely f***ed up: fixed font not found
Package: x11-common Version: 1:7.0.12 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Hi X maintainers! It seems that the font organization is completely crazy now: - X cannot find the fixed font anymore: The fixed enty in fonts.alias in /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc is not included in the fonts.dir file - there are still two different hierachies: Up to now the xorg.conf files contain as fontpath /usr/lib/X11/fonts ... But /usr/lib/X11/fonts - /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts but the later is DIFFERENT from /usr/share/fonts/X11/... so in effect the fonts in /usr/share/fonts/X11 are not included in the font path at all. - there are no man pages how to update the font system: mkfontdir which has been used till now is nothing else the mkfontscale script. All this is grave because one cannot start the X server, and even playing around with /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc and mkfontdir didn't fix the situation (the script could give a warning message that now you should use update-what-the-hell). After adding the fonts.scale by hand and adding it to the fonts.dir still now work, because of the above fonts path hierachy mismatch. What a grat disaster, to be honest! Forthermore, please include documentation, write up some transition document, it is NOT up to the user to find out everything by themselves. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (10, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-rc1-mm2 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages x11-common depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.4.72 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.15.5 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii laptop-detect 0.12.1 attempt to detect a laptop ii lsb-base 3.1-3 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip x11-common recommends no packages. -- debconf information: x11-common/xwrapper/allowed_users: Anybody x11-common/experimental_packages: x11-common/xwrapper/actual_allowed_users: anybody x11-common/xwrapper/nice_value/error: x11-common/xwrapper/nice_value: -10 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#362895: libgtk2.0-0: complete loss of desktop, nautilus
Package: libgtk2.0-0 Version: 2.8.17-1 Severity: important Installed latest gtk packages in unstable, resulted in immediate loss of desktop. Lost all icons from desktop, but background image remained. After logging out and back in again plain grey desktop, no icons or background image. Right clicking on desktop gives no response. Nautilus will no longer start, just hangs, or perhaps it is running but never manages to draw to the screen? Bug#358745: libtest-class-perl: [PATCH] fix for the FTBFS bug
Package: libtest-class-perl Version: 0.11-1 Followup-For: Bug #358745 tags 358745 +patch thanks Hi, After studying what was happening I found that this bug was also reported in CPAN 6 months ago, and it's still open (http://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=14981). There is a tip for solving the problem: using Test::Builder::Tester for replacing hardcoded strings. In many t/*.t files, T::B::T is already being used. So, I rewrote part of the two offending test files, and I think they are correct. They work perfectly now. I have already sent this patch to upstream, but since they doesn't seem very active, I think it would be good if we patch it now. I include the specific patch for the test files, and also a patch for the package, which includes the other patch and the modifications con debian/rules and debian/control for using dpatch. NOTE: in the patch I replaced the libtest-builder-tester-perl dependency with perl-modules 5.8.8, since the former are now included in the latter. -- Martín Ferrari diff -Naur libtest-class-perl-0.11/t/die_before_plan.t libtest-class-perl-0.11-new/t/die_before_plan.t --- libtest-class-perl-0.11/t/die_before_plan.t 2005-02-19 16:32:33.0 -0300 +++ libtest-class-perl-0.11-new/t/die_before_plan.t 2006-04-16 05:13:58.474443044 -0300 @@ -3,10 +3,7 @@ use strict; use warnings; use Test; -use Fcntl; -use IO::File; -use Test::Builder; -use POSIX qw(_exit); +use Test::Builder::Tester tests = 1; package Object::Test; use base 'Test::Class'; @@ -23,29 +20,11 @@ package main; -my $io = IO::File-new_tmpfile or die couldn't create tmp file ($!)\n; -my $Test = Test::Builder-new; -$Test-output($io); -$Test-failure_output($io); -$ENV{TEST_VERBOSE}=0; -$ENV{HARNESS_ACTIVE}=0; -Object::Test-runtests; - -plan tests = 4; - -seek $io, SEEK_SET, 0; -my $SEP = $^O eq MSWin32 ? Bug#362816: initramfs-tools: Initramfs-tools creates a buggy initrd image file.
After some research, it turned out that the initrd image file had a problem. I tred to fix it creating a new initrd image with mkinitramfs -k 2.6.15-1-686 -u -t, but it showed the same problem at boot up. Then I used mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd-img-2.6.15-1-686 2.6.15-1-686 and it worked well on reboot. please use update-initramfs the command line syntax you are showing above doesn't work for mkinitramfs Sorry, of course it was update-initramfs -k 2.6.15-1-686 -u -t. Bug#362894: x11-common: font system completely f***ed up: fixed font not found
On Sun, Apr 16, 2006 at 12:13:43PM +0200, Norbert Preining wrote: It seems that the font organization is completely crazy now: - X cannot find the fixed font anymore: The fixed enty in fonts.alias in /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc is not included in the fonts.dir file - there are still two different hierachies: Up to now the xorg.conf files contain as fontpath /usr/lib/X11/fonts ... When it gives you that message, it does actually mean it ... This is the recommended way to update it: update-fonts-alias misc update-fonts-dir misc update-fonts-scale misc Forthermore, please include documentation, write up some transition document, it is NOT up to the user to find out everything by themselves. This will be done, but in the meantime -- if you are unable to cope with such transitions, unstable is probably not for you. It mostly works for everyone, but in such an enormous transition (a ~60MB source package transitioning to something like 200 source packages, as well as moving out of a directory hierachy that Debian has known since its inception), you have to expect that the road will be a little bumpy. Yes, it's getting fixed, but these changes have been in Ubuntu and in experimental[0] for quite some time with the opportunity to test same, and the bugs reported there were ironed out. If you're running unstable, you're going to need to have a little patience with the process. That's just the way it goes, I'm afraid. Cheers, Daniel [0]: With minor modifications, e.g. /usr/share/fonts/X11 instead of /usr/share/X11/fonts. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? To expand on Daniel's closure message: X11R6 is dead, and this directory needs to be removed so it can be replaced with a compatibility symlink. So if the file in /usr/X11R6/bin comes from an official package, please tell us the package so x11-common can conflict with it. If it's an unofficial It was not from an official package. And it was a symlink, so dealing with it is a bit more complicated. Anyhow, I wonder what exactly do we win by trying to remove this directory. What is the problem with just letting where it is and allow it to rot untill the last package having files there is removed.
