The user is now warned about the security risks of the rarly used

At its worst, it is equivelent of an anonymous writable ftp directory.

Ever since the Firefox 1.5 upgrade I've been noticing considerably more
instability, with Firefox randomly crashing after about a half-hour of
regular browsing. So far, though, I'd not been able to find a page on
which it would reliably crash; usually after restart I can go back to the
same page and everything is fine.

However, today I finally ran into one that crashes every time, including
  with running:

  firefox -safe-mode http://www.brillianceaudio.com/

  Doesn't crash for me.

Found it, at least for this site. I had a chrome/userContent.css file
that contained the following, from an old Flashblock extension:
Thanks for digging in to it.

 object[classid$=:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-44455354],

 embed[type=application/x-shockwave-flash],
 object[type=application/x-director],
 embed[type=application/x-director]
 { -moz-binding: url(chrome://flashblock/content/flash.xml#obj); }
Are those cab files still lingering? What flashblock are you talking about?
Was it a .deb, or a firefox xpi or whatever, or some binary .so?

Is there maybe something missing from the Firefox upgrade process to get
rid of stuff like this left lingering from disabled extensions?
Where was it? $HOME? /etc/? Upgrades shouldn't ever touch anybody's $HOME,
although there was a case of an upgrade creating cruft in /root where I agree
with the maintainer's decision to remove the cruft on future upgrades if the
md5sum was expected...

(Or something to at least let it not segfault on obsolete instructions?)
instructions? Do you mean extensions? It is my understanding that firefox
will simply not load extensions whose version isn't compatible. segfaulting is
a bug, always, but it isn't (yet) clear to me that it is a firefox bug :)
Anyway, the Debian firefox package is only lightly patched.

Not that I can find anywhere. And it was an XPI:

http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

and I installed it long, long ago when I had Flash installed. Some time
later, I ended up not bothering to keep Flash installed and then the

$HOME, but Firefox moves things around in $HOME all the time when starting
as a newer version and recognizing configuration files left over from old
versions. It was inside its own .mozilla/firefox directory.

Just to add to the fun, today's upgrade of X also seemed to re-write the

 contain this broken link:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/binls -l X

I think there are two paths that can cause this -- either by meddling with
the xserver-xorg contents, removing the /usr/X11R6/bin/X symlink by hand to
work around this postinst failure, followed by upgrade to a version of
xserver-xorg that re-adds /usr/X11R6/bin/X and overwriting /usr/bin/X; or by
removing xserver-xorg, letting x11-common upgrade, and re-installing a
version of xserver-xorg which x11-common failed to conflict with.

Both of these should be transitive issues that won't affect future versions
of the xorg packages; and users who experience this bug can fix it with a
reinstall of x11-common.

This topic recently came up on debian/users; it looks like smartlist
doesn't address it (see last entry in FAQ). The amount of fiddling
necessary is not much; in procmail, grab the multipart boundary string
from the headers, seek to the terminating boundary, insert another
section with the unsubscribe footer, and leave the terminating line there.

Maybe something like this will work?

I feel that if we're going to start fiddling with MIME messages, we
should check whether it's a valid MIME message first.

If we're doing that, we can also get the boundary out properly.

Bug#362064: udev: udev tries to write to an installed, working initrd without asking

2006-04-16 Thread Steve Langasek
On Fri, Apr 14, 2006 at 09:24:22PM +0200, maximilian attems wrote:
Having evms call update-initramfs at install time is completely gratuitous,
because the system *won't* be set up for evms at the time of the evms
postinst: either the update-initramfs will be a complete no-op and have to
be repeated later once evms is set up, or it won't be a no-op -- meaning it
will likely have done something undesirable, unrelated to evms.

 update-initramfs isn't a noop,
it happily include all the needed evms root support,
as evms added its hooks and calls update-initramfs.

Aha, I was thinking that these update-initramfs hooks worked the same way as
things did in the mkinitrd days -- where things were only added to the image
if it was determined that they were useful.

So if those hooks are adding their bits to the initramfs unconditionally,
you're right; there's no worry about needing to call update-initramfs again
by hand.

What happens if a package like evms is *removed*? That would certainly
break evms-on-root systems. But it would already have broken systems that
used evms for filesystems other than the rootfs, so perhaps it's not
significant.

And this is bad, because all you're doing is covering up bugs. The bug is
  either:

  - some package in the chain has broken dependencies, so packages it should
depend on are not guaranteed to be in 'installed' state at the time its
postinst runs, or

linux-image doesn't directly depend on an initramfs-tools hook like udev
so i don't understand that point.

Well, linux-image does depend on linux-initramfs-tool, which must be
satisfied before linux-image is configured. But since multiple packages
provide linux-initramfs-tool, it's important that none of these packages
allow their scripts to return success when they're not in a configured
state.

The same goes for the update-initramfs scripts: they shouldn't return
success when we know we can't guarantee correct operation.

With the current behavior, where you rebuild the initramfs repeatedly and
hope it comes out right at the end, you are throwing away very valuable
information when it is possible to *know* that an initramfs is not bootable.
And once you stop doing that (which isn't acceptable in the first place),
you stop needing to update the initramfs separately for every hook because
you'll get it right the first time the initramfs is written out!

 ok this indicates 2 bugs:
 - initramfs-tools no longer allowed to call update-initramfs
 - exit 1 if hook script doesn't get it right
as linux-image will never depend on the hook itself, there is an high
probability that the hook is in state unpacked.

Yes, there is a high probability that the hooking package is in state
unpacked. I'm not sure this means the hook script must return non-zero,
though -- many hook scripts may be usable even before their packages are
configured.

So I don't see any real benefit to having all of these tools rebuilding the
initramfs repeatedly during an upgrade cycle. Theoretically it would be
nice to know as soon as a package is installed that it will break the
initramfs, but using update-initramfs doesn't do this: the only way to be
sure whether a new initramfs is broken is to try to boot from it. Since we
can't force reboots during an upgrade (especially not once for each hook!),
there is no significant increase in predictability by using this method, and
users are better off if the upgrade doesn't touch the existing, working
  initramfs images at all.

third bug: disallowing any hook to rebuild it's initramfs

After thinking about all of this, I'm leaning toward the opinion that it
makes sense for hooks to automatically rebuild the initramfs on initial
install *only*. That gives you the benefits of being able to quickly add
support for things like evms and lvm to the existing kernels, without as
much risk of destabilizing already-working images.

ok, the following hooks install conf files, which may not be unpacked
on linux-image upgrade: evms and udev

searching the ubuntu bugs for the rationale of the update-initramfs
postinst, i get lots of broken upgrades, which were fixed by
dpkg-reconfigure linux-image, so agreeing that current state is not
optimal and that mkinitramfs needs to get stricter.
 as example:
 https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/32123

for getting aboves right initramfs-tools needs a solution for
 simultaneous linux-image and hook upgrades:

 a) you ensure hook is upacked before linux-image
that's the easy one and the hook wouldn't need to do anything.

 b) hook is unpacked after:
according to above leads to broken initramfs generation,
thus linux-image is not fully installed
breaks potentialy many upgrades

Hmm, this can still be handled by having the hooking packages only call
update-initramfs on initial install, and making sure that a hook script
that's not ready fails explicitly instead of silently.

x11-common. This needs to be fixed soon so that packages don't get uploaded
using the functional but buggy xutils 1.0.2-1.

The attached patch Works For Me when building autolock for X11R7.

Bug#362874: firefox: reproducible crash on www.brillianceaudio.com

2006-04-16 Thread Russ Allbery
Mike Hommey [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Your problem is that the extensions WAS properly disabled. But your
userContent.css file still contained a reference to it. Now the question
is, what the hell does this do in your userContent.css ?

Not a clue.

Did you add it yourself ?

No.

Did the extension add it itself ?

I would assume so, since I definitely didn't do it myself.

If it is the latter, then there's a serious issue with flashblocker. It
 shouldn't touch anything like this.

So the real crash bug seems to be that if you bind some inexisting stuff
to an element, firefox crashes. I must say I'm not surprised. Firefox is
 full of shi^H^Htuff like this.

I discovered this by poking through .mozilla/firefox and was retrying the
page each time I changed something. Since this worked with a new user
account, the first thing I decided to try cleaning out was extensions.
Deleting the disabled extension out of extensions/ didn't help, nor did
removing it from Extensions.rdf (although I'm not sure if that's even
used), but as soon as I deleted userContent.css, the page loaded without
any trouble at all.

I see that it does have Flash on it, which makes me wonder if the
instability I've been seeing is related to the growing number of Flash
banner ads and this bug triggering on them.

I had an xorg.conf file that listed /usr/lib/X11/fonts/*,

things in the old directory were from bitchx and xfonts-jmk.

You know, I really wish the X server would explain in more
detail *why* it can't load default font fixed. Is it:

- Cannot find fixed in any fonts.alias in the FontPath?
- Cannot find the name in a fonts.dir file?
- Cannot open the file name given in the fonts.dir file?
- File is corrupt?

Well, yes, there is one remaining file added manually by me, however the
postinst should not rely on that and fail otherwise.

To expand on Daniel's closure message: X11R6 is dead, and this directory
needs to be removed so it can be replaced with a compatibility symlink.
Otherwise, the transition path gets much uglier as we try to track down
one-by-one all the tools that reference /usr/X11R6/bin as an absolute path
between now and etch's release.

So if the file in /usr/X11R6/bin comes from an official package, please tell
us the package so x11-common can conflict with it. If it's an unofficial
package, update it to install to /usr/bin instead. If it's not from a
package, move the file to /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin (the latter seems more
appropriate to me, the former will give you path compatibility) via the
/usr/X11R6/bin symlink).

Note that each one of these packages must conflict with every other
package, either directly with an explicit Conflicts: or by
conflicts+provides+replaces with some virtual ftpd package I guess.
It isn't true that each package must conflict with every other
package. Rather, each package must either declare a conflict, or be
  conflicted with.

And almost all of these packages already conflict with each other because
they Provide: and Conflict: the ftp-server virtual package.

Only proftpd-common seems to be a non-ftp-server package shipping this
 manpage.

This may have been fixed since 3.3.2, but if not, well, searches take time,

are two issues standing in the way of a simple rebuild:

- xutils-dev is currently broken; bug #362886, should be fixed tomorrow
- xprint itself fails to build against Xorg 7.0 due to bug #360446; I just
talked to the maintainer, and he says he's preparing a new upstream

Did this just start happening? Does it happen if you run kmail under a
different user account? Do any other KDE PIM apps crash? Could you attach
the backtrace from the kcrash handler?

Everything there looks fine to me (it depends on the right version of kdelibs,
etc.), except for the kio-plugins, which don't have a version specified.
Shouldn't those also depend on the same version, i.e. 4:3.5.2-1?

xvncviewer does not use MITSHM extension on system that support it.
The problem is that the option -DMITSHM is missing during compilation
of the vncviewer/ directory. The patch solves it.

Is this still happening? Please try upgrading your KDE packages in general.
I suspect this was not a problem with KMail, but a problem with KDE or other
libraries. I've seen crashes like this in the past that were caused by, for
example, running a version of KMail from testing while using kdelibs from
unstable. If so, I don't think this is exactly a KMail bug.

Is this still happening with current versions of KMail? I've had no such
problems. Does it happen with a clean config file? Can you try running
KMail as a different user?

If it's still happening despite all that, please post some info like:

* What software your IMAP server runs
* Your folder structure, and how many messages are in each

Bug#362773: xautolock conflicts with x11-common

2006-04-16 Thread Roland Stigge

Hi Steve,

thanks for the patch!

Steve Langasek wrote:
Because xautolock install binaries in /usr/X11R6/bin, it now conflicts
with x11-common and therefore is uninstallable. See #362524 and
 #362200.

This should be fixable with a simple binNMU against the next version of
xutils-dev, but the xautolock package also installs manpages by hand to
/usr/X11R6/man which should also be fixed. The attached patch should take
 care of both issues.

Unfortunately, I can't see xutils-dev 1:1.0.2-2 uploaded to the archive
yet (http://packages.qa.debian.org/x/xutils-dev.html) let alone it being
available on a mirror.

I will upload as soon as it is possible building against the archive / a
mirror.

bye,
  Roland

Bug#362836: webhttrack: HTML templates for web server are in the wrong directory

2006-04-16 Thread Xavier Roche
tag 362836 +pending
thank you BTS

The Debian policy states Packages must not require the existence of
any files in /usr/share/doc/ in order to function. The webhttrack web
server uses templates from /usr/share/httrack/html to construct its web
pages. That directory is a symlink to
/usr/share/doc/httrack/html/server - so the server stops working if the
 administrator decides to remove /usr/share/doc/httrack.

This is indeed a bug - I'm working on the issue.

Bug#362847: Further information

2006-04-16 Thread Stéphane Magnenat
Hi,

I've made a test-case in the form of a simple C program which generates 10 sec
of 440 Hz sinus. With a define, it can generate samples at 44.1 kHz or et 48
kHz. Direct output at 48 kHz sounds perfect but output at 44.1 kHz through
the alsa rate plugin clearly shows a problem generating high frequencies.
I've attached the test case to this mail. It can be compiled with:
gcc -lasound alsatest.c -o alsatest
Please chane the samplingRate define to test with 44100 and 48000

Thanks, have a nice day,

Steph

 Hi,

Apparently you don't understand (or don't care), because this is the second
time I file the same bug report (#344125), but as this package isn't a
native package the upstream changelog should not be here.

If I want to read what new in that release I read the NEW file in the doc

Please remove these entreies from this changelog.

We have talked about it on IRC and people like it that way, anyway that

nack it works on many boxes out there according to popcon stats.
also next time when you submit a bug report,
please paste the error message right away.

Today, I updated my system. It updated two things important I think :
 linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 and initramfs-tools. Strangely, linux-image was
already the same version, so apt just updated a up-to-date package.

But after rebooting (as it asked for during the install process), I
received the following message : Begin : Waiting for root file
system... and waiting for about 4 minutes, the Busybox shell was shown.

did you check in the rescue shell:
a) if your root device existed
b) if your relevant modules where loaded

After some research, it turned out that the initrd image file had a
problem. I tred to fix it creating a new initrd image with mkinitramfs
-k 2.6.15-1-686 -u -t, but it showed the same problem at boot up. Then I
 used mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd-img-2.6.15-1-686 2.6.15-1-686 and it
 worked well on reboot.

please use update-initramfs the command line syntax you are showing above
doesn't work for mkinitramfs

 Strange, isn't it ?

if not working i need the output of the following commands
cat /proc/cmdline
lsmod

Bug#362631: CC of bugzilla entry

2006-04-16 Thread David Härdeman
For the benefit of anyone reading this bug report, I'll CC the reply
and patch I sent to the upstream bugzilla entry:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6394

I think the reason the workaround didn't work was that not both
detection routines (block 0 and 1) were moved down in the table.
I've attached a patch which moves both of them and updates the
comments, I'll forward it to the Debian bug report as well.

Regards,
David

BTW, if a partition has previously been used as lvm and is going to be
used for a new purpose, one should run pvremove on it to remove all
traces of lvm signatures.

Bug#355013: initramfs-tools: device mapper device ordering breaks boot (sometimes)

On Thu, 02 Mar 2006, Christian Weeks wrote:

I use LVM on all my disks. I swapped an old laptop disk into another

 drops into the busybox.

An analysis of this problem indicates that there are issues with LILO,
the initramfs and/or the device mapper.

Here's what appears to be happening. I run lilo, and (after spinning the
CPU for about 30-60 seconds!) it deduces that my LVM disk cweekslap/root
has id FE00 (I am not sure this is correct, however). So it spits this
onto the command line. With a single disk in the laptop we will now boot
correctly. I add in the second disk and at boot time, for some reason,
the secondary disk (helenlap/home!) is now device FE00. Of course
helenlap/home is not a valid root disk (it never was) and the system
drops to busybox when it can't find init. I have recovered the situation
temporarily with one of three fixes:

 1. Use a boot parameter root=/dev/mapper/cweekslap-root
 2. remount /dev/mapper/cweekslap-root at the /root mountpoint in the initram
 disk
 3. recreate the /dev/root with mknod /dev/root b 254 2

ok, adding discs works much better with grub.
lowering the severity as lilo is not default.
but please become familiar with the carriage return on your keyboard
and format mails to ~80 columns.

can you paste your lilo.conf?

Nothing is able to work permanently though. I can't make a lilo root=
option stick- it turns into numbers.

have you tried to use the append=root=/dev/mapper/cweekslap-root
instead and without the root lilo.conf param?
afaik that is the way that is recommended for evms on lilo too see end

This should be fixable with a simple binNMU against the next version of

Unfortunately, I can't see xutils-dev 1:1.0.2-2 uploaded to the archive
yet (http://packages.qa.debian.org/x/xutils-dev.html) let alone it being
 available on a mirror.

I will upload as soon as it is possible building against the archive / a

Yes, hopefully this will be the case after the next dinstall, but I'm not
the maintainer of xutils-dev and the package hasn't been uploaded yet so I
can't promise anything.

Bug#362894: x11-common: font system completely f***ed up: fixed font not found

2006-04-16 Thread Norbert Preining
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.0.12
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi X maintainers!

It seems that the font organization is completely crazy now:
- X cannot find the fixed font anymore:
The fixed enty in fonts.alias in /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc is not
  included in the fonts.dir file
- there are still two different hierachies: Up to now the xorg.conf
files contain as fontpath /usr/lib/X11/fonts ...
  But /usr/lib/X11/fonts - /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts but the later
  is DIFFERENT from /usr/share/fonts/X11/...
so in effect the fonts in /usr/share/fonts/X11 are not included in
  the font path at all.
- there are no man pages how to update the font system: mkfontdir which
has been used till now is nothing else the mkfontscale script.

All this is grave because one cannot start the X server, and even
playing around with /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc and mkfontdir didn't fix
the situation (the script could give a warning message that now you
should use update-what-the-hell). After adding the fonts.scale by hand
and adding it to the fonts.dir still now work, because of the above
fonts path hierachy mismatch. What a grat disaster, to be honest!

Forthermore, please include documentation, write up some transition
document, it is NOT up to the user to find out everything by themselves.

2006-04-16 Thread Richard Burton

Package: libgtk2.0-0
Version: 2.8.17-1
Severity: important

Installed latest gtk packages in unstable, resulted in immediate loss of
desktop. Lost all icons from desktop, but background image remained. After
logging out and back in again plain grey desktop, no icons or background
image. Right clicking on desktop gives no response.

Nautilus will no longer start, just hangs, or perhaps it is running but
never manages to draw to the screen? Strace shows it stopped at this, maybe
that's normal waiting for something to happen, can collect a full trace if
that helps. I suspect the desktop is also hung in a similar way.

Bug#358745: libtest-class-perl: [PATCH] fix for the FTBFS bug

2006-04-16 Thread Martín Ferrari
Package: libtest-class-perl
Version: 0.11-1
Followup-For: Bug #358745

tags 358745 +patch
thanks

Hi,

After studying what was happening I found that this bug was also
reported in CPAN 6 months ago, and it's still open
(http://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=14981). There is a tip
for solving the problem: using Test::Builder::Tester for replacing
hardcoded strings.

In many t/*.t files, T::B::T is already being used. So, I rewrote part
of the two offending test files, and I think they are correct. They
work perfectly now.

I have already sent this patch to upstream, but since they doesn't
seem very active, I think it would be good if we patch it now.

I include the specific patch for the test files, and also a patch for
the package, which includes the other patch and the modifications con
debian/rules and debian/control for using dpatch.

NOTE: in the patch I replaced the libtest-builder-tester-perl
dependency with perl-modules 5.8.8, since the former are now
included in the latter.

Bug#360078: Bemused server missing xmms controller

2006-04-16 Thread Michael Meskes
severity 360078 wishlist
thanks

Bemused server that is included in kdebluetooth is missing controller
for xmms. It has only amarok, noatun and scripts controllers.

This is not really a bug, but a feature decision. See bug #326218 for the
reasoning. I don't care which media player is better but I don't like the
idea of depending on a lot of things just to get another media player
involved. Creating a separate package might be possible though.

Bug#362816: initramfs-tools: Initramfs-tools creates a buggy initrd image file.

2006-04-16 Thread Fabien Fivaz
After some research, it turned out that the initrd image file had a
problem. I tred to fix it creating a new initrd image with mkinitramfs
-k 2.6.15-1-686 -u -t, but it showed the same problem at boot up. Then I
  used mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd-img-2.6.15-1-686 2.6.15-1-686 and it
  worked well on reboot.

please use update-initramfs the command line syntax you are showing above
 doesn't work for mkinitramfs

Sorry, of course it was update-initramfs -k 2.6.15-1-686 -u -t.

Upgrading udev resolved the problem. I did not see it in the not upgraded
list from apt. Strange that it upgrades initramfs-tools without upgrading
also to the latest udev...

Thx
Fabien

Bug#362894: x11-common: font system completely f***ed up: fixed font not found

2006-04-16 Thread Daniel Stone
On Sun, Apr 16, 2006 at 12:13:43PM +0200, Norbert Preining wrote:

When it gives you that message, it does actually mean it ...

This is the recommended way to update it:
update-fonts-alias misc
update-fonts-dir misc
update-fonts-scale misc

Forthermore, please include documentation, write up some transition
document, it is NOT up to the user to find out everything by themselves.

This will be done, but in the meantime -- if you are unable to cope with
such transitions, unstable is probably not for you.

It mostly works for everyone, but in such an enormous transition (a
~60MB source package transitioning to something like 200 source
packages, as well as moving out of a directory hierachy that Debian has
known since its inception), you have to expect that the road will be a
little bumpy. Yes, it's getting fixed, but these changes have been in
Ubuntu and in experimental[0] for quite some time with the opportunity
to test same, and the bugs reported there were ironed out.

If you're running unstable, you're going to need to have a little
patience with the process. That's just the way it goes, I'm afraid.

Cheers,
Daniel

 /usr/share/X11/fonts.

When trying to merge two big po files (dpkg's po) I found that the
application is really slow when trying to edit either of the merged
files. The files are both over 160KB.

Are you still facing this problem? How slow is slow? Is this because
your machine was loaded at that point? According to upstream, meld is
about 300 times faster for large files (though that is for diffs and not
for editing) since 0.9.2. I've been using meld or very large files and
haven't faced this issue.

  I can reproduce this.

This issue has been fixed by upstream in meld-0.9.1 (not tagging it as
fixed-upstream as the fix is already in the Debian package).

The current behaviour of meld is such that, a small red dot is used in
the right hand bottom corner of the icon for a file with newer timestamp
even if the files being compared are identical. If the files are
different, then both files are shown as red with a thick red dot in the
 newer-timestamp file.

Ah, looking further I founf locales having a NEWS.Debian directory
(already filed as bug#362763).

I imagine the fix for apt-listchanges crashing over this is to check not
only for file existence but also file characteristics.

libmono-firebirdsql1.7-cil depends on libfbembed1, which does not exist
on powerpc. not sure why the binary picked up this dependancy, but it
most likely shouldn't have.

It was not from an official package. And it was a symlink, so dealing
with it is a bit more complicated. Anyhow, I wonder what exactly do we
win by trying to remove this directory. What is the problem with just
letting where it is and allow it to rot untill the last package having

why should we try to nuke that directory, just for cosmetics reasons?

Bug#362905: giftrans: please follow xorg migration

2006-04-16 Thread Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe
Package: giftrans
Version: 1.12.2-11

Hello,

current giftrans is not compatible with the new xorg packages, since it
depends on xfree86-common which is conflicted out by the new x11-common.
This leads to either blocking installation of the new xorg packages or
the removal of giftrans on the respective systems.
Could you thus please follow the xorg migration.

Btw. have a look at the xfree86-common package description:
This transitional package is only depended upon by packages that install
files into /usr/X11R6 but have not yet corrected their dependencies.

Thanks for your work regards
   Mario
