--- Comment #1 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2006-04-24 10:58 MST ---
I did some further investigation on this behavior.
Interestingly, some strange combination of client OS and directory name on the
server seems to result in this behavior.

Given: Client-OS: Windows 98 SE
Samba 3.0.14 (Debian Sarge)

There's a directory on the server, that's owned be root.somegroup, with
permissions of 0770. The user on the client machine is in group somegroup,
primary group is othergroup.

Now, it seems that as soon as the directory is named y-something or
Y-something everything that would normally appear beneath that group is
invisible (it's still accessible, tho).

Now, change the Samba Server version to 3.0.11 and everything will get listed.
Or change the name from y-something to y_something or x-something or
z-something...

Or: leave the Samba Server at version 3.0.14 and the directory named
y-something and just used Windows XP (SP2) as the client OS - instead of
Windows 98 SE. Same user, but in this combination y-something is visible...

So, it seems that either Windows 98 SE sends a different request that causes
Samba Version 3.0.11 to choke on dirs called y-something or Samba Version
3.0.11 changed something that causes Windows 98 SE to choke on dirs called
y-something. And to repeat: it's not just that directory that's hidden, it's
everything that would be listed beneath/after/below that directory.

This behavior first appeared in version 3.0.12. 3.0.11 works fine.

Thanks!

Bug#339837: Publishing more data could maybe help

 1. Certain people sign NDAs/agreements to get the early disclosure

transparency, but security bugs can be fixed before they're (widly)
 known in the wild.

The Security Team has not signed any NDA, but a requisite to be on vendor-sec

for years, it makes sense in a world where the bad guys do reverse
engineering of security patches to develop worms and exploits, and it helps
the Security Team provide better security for our users (remember, SC #4).

Bug#364640: firefox: violates Mozilla user-agent string specification

2006-04-25 Thread Mike Hommey
On Mon, Apr 24, 2006 at 11:04:12PM -0400, Eric Dorland [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:
I'm not seeing what us being different is buying us though. Sure, the
mozilla format is stupid, but there doesn't seem to be any advantage
to the way you've done it. It's ok for us to be different, but there
should be a good reason to be.

Here is the rationale behind the change in xulrunner:

* It shortens the already long user agent string so that additions such
as product name are not painful,
* removes pointless information (the date in the original string
indicates the date of the build, not that of the API),
* keeps the Gecko string (which some site might want, seing how Apple
and Konqueror did put a like Gecko string),
* and finally avoid confusion with other Debian release informations
that may be present in the product specific part (Galeon, Epiphany, etc.)

I changed in firefox as well because in the end, it will be built against
xulrunner and will get this change anyway.

The only problem with it is that it gives the firefox version, not the gecko
one...

Bug#364706: azureus: Unable to close Warning window

2006-04-25 Thread Huy Duong
Package: azureus
Version: 2.4.0.2-1
Severity: normal

I was using Azureus when it suddenly shutdown due to a

NullPointerException (already reported to Azureus
dev). When I
re-ran Azureus, a Warning dialog opens in the lower
right corner
telling me that Azureus did not shutdown tidilty
 I try to click
on the Hide button to close the window but it does
not close.

When the mouse hovers over the button, it highlights,
so it seems like
the button is receiving the proper events, but
clicking on the button
doesn't cause it to do anything. I'm not sure if this
is a problem with
Azureus or the window manager (I'm using metacity),
but I'm assuming it
is Azureus as I don't have this problem with other
apps.

Thanks,

It requires xserver 1.1. The CVS ati-1-0-branch has most of the fixes
and could be packaged for xserver 1.0 though.

Is there any plan to do that ? (Upload to experimental or unstable?)

An upstream release from that branch appears imminent. Once that's out,
nothing (other than lack of time) should prevent packaging it for sid.

Bug#321102: KMail with RC-Bugs moved to testing?

2006-04-25 Thread Bastian Venthur
Hi Devs,

I noticed KMail moving to testing, although it has grave bugs open. Was
this a mistake? I always thought packages with RC Bugs don't enter
testing until they're fixed?

Looking at #321102, I noticed that found in version is set to various
old versions but not to the current one (which is not that old BTW). If
this affected the migration to testing, it would look like cheating to
me in order to get the current PIM into testing at all costs.

I might be biased since I'm the reporter of some of the RC-bugs, but the
according upstream-bugs are still open (and still has 780 votes), so I
don't see a reason to assume this bug was somehow fixed. I suggest to
keep the bug open for every current version until the according
upstream-bug is closed. Since this is currently the only grave bug in
upstreams BTS I think the chances that upstream will forget about the
bug are pretty low.

Best regards,

Bastian

Bug#359962: alternative to X-KDE-SubstituteUID for non KDE desktops

2006-04-25 Thread Fathi Boudra
Hi,

some more informations about similar behavior to xdg-su on debian.
it could be nice to have a common way to deal with elevated user privileges
problem. Actually, kvpnc and qtparted are use cases that require this
functionnality.

* from Olivier Trichet :
On Debian system, you may use the su-to-root program from the menu
package. For instance, the qtparted package use this method.

* from man su-to-root :
NAME
   su-to-root - A simple script to give an `interactive' front-end to su.
It can be used in menu entry commands to ask for the root password

SYNOPSIS
   su-to-root [-X] [-p user] -c command

DESCRIPTION
Most menu entries simply start an editor or a game or whatever. But
some menu entries would like to give the user the ability to change important
settings in the system, that require root privileges. su-to-root can be used
to ask for the root password.

OPTIONS
   -c command
The command to execute as a string. This option is mandatory.

   -p user
The name of the user to su to, instead of root.

-X The command is a X11 program that do not require a terminal.
This is to be used with menu entries that declare needs=X11.

ENVIRONMENT
   SU_TO_ROOT_X
Select the su-like program called by su-to-root -X. Supported
values are gksu, kdesu and sux.

   SU_TO_ROOT_SU
If set to sux force su-to-root to use sux in text mode.

* about sux:
wrapper around su which will transfer your X credentials
Sux is a wrapper around the standard su command which will transfer
your X credentials to the target user.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sux/

* qtparted.desktop: Exec=su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/qtparted

Fathi

Elimar,

You're abolutely right. On 2.6 sytems we are using udev for

Does that mean that I better remove the alsa-utils package?

Thanks, Karl, for the answer.

Unfortunately I forgot to work around a misfeature of the Debian BTS -
mail to bugnumber[EMAIL PROTECTED] don't go to the maintainer, i.e. the
debian TeX mailing list. Therefore I'm sending this mail without much
input and a fullquote.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Karl Berry) wrote:

But I haven't checked whether it's still that way in
 any more current code.

No code changes have been made (yet) since TL2005. (None of this part
of the code has changed in many years, to my knowledge.)

Commenting out the break does solve the problem.

I don't understand. But anyway, I agree with your basic point that
it should possible to specify exact paper sizes and not have dvips
tinker with them. Does Akira's -tunknown solve the problem for you?
If so, we could at least improve the documentation.

 Thanks,

Bug#364711: x-window-system-core: broken dependencies?

2006-04-25 Thread Greffrath Fabian
package: x-window-system-core
version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6
severity: wishlist

Hello!

I am wondering about the dependencies of the 'x-window-system-core'
meta-package. Among others, it depends on the following packages:

xlibmesa-dri, xlibmesa-gl | libgl1-mesa-dri, libglu1-xorg | libglu1-mesa

This means that you have the choice to install the OpenGL graphics
library and the OpenGL utility library from either the X.Org release or
from the MESA release. Fine!

But when it comes to the DRI modules, the meta-package depends on
'xlibmesa-dri'. This means that whenever I install the 'libgl1-mesa-dri'
package as an alternative to 'xlibmesa-gl', I consequently have to
remove the 'x-window-system-core' meta-package along with the
'xlibmesa-dri' package. But I would like to keep the meta-package.

This is somehow annoying, since the 3 graphics adapters I use (ATI
Radeon 9500 [R300 based], SIS 630 [embedded, Notebook] and SIS 661) only
work in accelerated mode when using MESA's 'libgl1-mesa-dri' package. So
this is more than an alternative for me but the only working solution ;)

Please change the dependency on the dri modules to the following:

xlibmesa-dri | libgl1-mesa-dri

Thank you very much!
Fabian Greffrath

Bug#364712: enter file name in filebrowser?

2006-04-25 Thread Harald Dunkel
Package: thunderbird
Version: 1.5-4

Some important usability improvement:

I would like to simply enter the filename in the file browser
(e.g. for attachements). That would be 10x faster than scrolling
through a huge list of files watching for the right one to click
(sorted case independent, but directories first, huh).

Many thanx

v4l_bufsize=2048 indicates the size of the reserved bigphys buffer, it's
enabled by default in Debian kernels (CONFIG_BIGPHYS_AREA=y), so all you
need to do is to add to your append line in /etc/lilo.conf a
bigphysarea parameter with the buffer size, this way the kernel will
reserve this amount of memory as video buffer.

bigphysarea was a good enough solution for Debian to ship at one time;
unfortunately, the current Debian kernel maintainers believe the patch
should be merged upstream instead (I Cc: them on this mail), while
upstream argues with the previously happy users that the patch is badly
designed and their hardware is broken besides. I'm mostly kidding
there, but don't you agree that this would be a frustrating situation
for a non-technical user? I'm not arguing that bigphysarea is a good
solution, since I'm incompetent to judge its merits within the context
of the kernel design (and parts of the patch do appear dodgy at a
glance), but it is currently the only solution unless we figure out
where to go from here.

What are the requirements here? How much physically contig memory? Are
there any bus addressing limitations on it?

2 to 4MB depending on the size of the framebuffer (realistically,
720x480x24bpp should be the upper limit, 640x480x24bpp for square pixel
hardware). I have no idea wrt your second question, but I believe that
contiguous physical memory from the frame grabber's DMA base address is
the only requirement. The developers at mjpeg.sourceforge.net know the
hardware far better than me, since I'm just a user of that project.
Would a dialog with Ronald help you decide what to do?

We already have infrastructure for managing and allocating large
physically-contiguous hunks of memory: arch/*/mm/hugetlb.c. On x86 that
operates in 2MB hunks (non-PAE) and 4MB hunks (PAE).

Perhaps we could hook into there to get the needed memory?

Bug#364715: Only testing works although I get a selection list: stable, testing, unstable

Severity: normal

During the installation, the installer asks for an online repository. I
selected ftp.de.debian.org (from Germany). After that selection, I was
presented the list of the following three possibilities:

stable, testing, unstable
As I am going to install Sid, I selected unstable which gives an error
later when I wanted to Install base system. Only testing works.

I was using the netinst ISO from 2006-04-20.

Bug#364716: vorbis-tools: new feature 'vorbiscomment -e' to launch an editor

2006-04-25 Thread Peter Samuelson

Package: vorbis-tools
Version: 1.1.1-5
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

I often want to edit tags of ogg vorbis files using an editor, so I
wrote a new option 'vorbiscomment -e' (similar to 'crontab -e').

I was a bit lazy, using the current directory for the temp file rather
than getenv(TMPDIR), but I know some other apps do the same thing.
Also, the patch is debian-specific as I use sensible-editor rather than
getenv(VISUAL) etc.

It built on all arches except for amd64 because debian/rules didn't

could this be a clock problem on amd64?

  Hello,

I have found that is rather hard to mark strings that I am not so sure

A 'fuzzy' button would be a good thing to add to the UI.

 Isn't the ctrl+U shortcut enough?

I am not sure if that existed back when I reported this.

Right; I was attempting to indicate that an NDA or an agreement of

I had installed an amd64 system (debian unstable) a few weeks back (this

working (using ia32-libs version-1.5). When I tried to do the same on a

big EDA companies) complaining about GLIBC_2.0 not being defined.

Please post the full error message instead of paraphrasing.

I had this exact problem (gnome-session exits; no problem with
other user accounts nor with startx).

chmod a+x $HOME made it work.

Thanks Eric, for pointing me to the solution.

Bug#360128: please add regional_name variable for contry names

2006-04-25 Thread Alastair McKinstry

Hi,

Thanks for the interesting patch. Sorry about the delay in replying.
I've been looking at the patch, but how do you see it being used ?
That is, the data is used at the moment by UI code doing drop-down
lists, presenting a list of countries, and normally returning a country-code
to the program for internal use; how would this data be different?

and why not just use ISO-3166-2 instead?

Regards
Alastair

Hi!

To describe this regional_name I'm proposing, it is basicaly for languages
that:

 - Are spoken in more than one country.
 - In at least one of the countries where it is spoken, it is only spoken in
 a specific region.
 - Such region has a particular name that can be easily identified by the
 language's community.

This is the case for ca_{FR,IT} and eu_{ES,FR}, but I'm sure there are many
similar situations in the world (and each translator team can figure out which
apply to their language).

As you can see in the attached patch, the idea is that the base name is
something like @region@ (Country) that is never actualy used untranslated.
Then, translator teams that find it appropiate (i.e. when the conditions I
described above apply to their language) may add their own translation for this
string.

This will be specialy useful for d-i's localechooser, as it'll output more
descriptive information when queriing the user for her location.

My patch adds ca_{FR,IT} and eu_{ES,FR} as a proof of concept. Then I plan to
get localechooser to identify this information and use it appropiately.

Thanks

I understand that realtime-lsm is going away, but until a fresh pam turns up
in testing, it is a good enough stopgap and it would be nice for it to at
least still be working. With kernel 2.6.15 it does still work if you build a
custom kernel with the default security model compiled as a module (which
many people will want to do to enable preempt anyway).

But on a fresh etch system without anything that has previously pulled in
bzip2, the build under module-assistant fails because one of the source
 archives is a .bz2.

Is this an upstream problem with module-assistant?

Hi,

I think its a problem of realtime-lsm, because nothing forces it to be
packages as bz2. Thanks for reporting.

Bug#364720: jackd periodically zombifies on amd64 dual core systems

2006-04-25 Thread Matthew Yee-King
Package: jackd

I have noticed that jackd periodically becomes zombified and therefore
ceases to work on my amd64 debian etch system running on an athlon x2
dual core CPU. Asking on the jack dev list, I was told:

The -clockfix branch of jack CVS fixes this problem. The root problem
is that the TSC clock sources on the AMDx2 cores are not sync'd,
therefore time, as perceived by JACK, can appear to leap forward or
backward as the process migrates across the CPU cores. The -clockfix
branch works around this feature.

I checked out this branch of jack from CVS

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/jackit co -r
clockfix jack

And the problem seems to be fixed. Although now none of the debian
packaged jack apps recognise my jack server.

cheers

- matthew

Bug#350407: lessdisks-terminal: modifies /etc/kernel-img.conf in postinst

2006-04-25 Thread Stephen Gran
This one time, at band camp, Jonas Smedegaard said:
On Mon, 24 Apr 2006 14:44:06 +0100 Stephen Gran wrote:

I do feel that such interpretation is problematic, however: Even when
 several main packages (kernel-package, linux-2.6,
kernel-image-2.4.27-i386) agree to share a configuration file with none
of them requiring it, how do then an additional package
(lessdisks-terminal) treat the situation if requiring the file to exist?

(and also, judging from comments in postinst it seems that linux-2.6
really requires the file when using symlinks).

OK, I think this is a fairly straight forward test - does
lessdisks-terminal in any way maintain either kernel-img.conf or inittab
(ship a manpage, related infrastructure, file creation/deletion handling)?
If not, then your package doesn't own the file, and can't modify it
except via a helper script.

I'm not trying to be brusque, I just want to cut to the chase here.

So far, we have been pretty lenient WRT kernel images (and
kernel-package) and policy. I am a little leery of opening an RC bug
on them right now, as I think vorlon might beat me with a heavy stick
for making his life harder than it already is :)

Hmm - so RC bugs should be avoided if annoying the maintainer? Sounds
like a violation of we won't hide problems - even with the narrow
interpretation of only applying to the BTS ;-).

No, You misunderstand me. An RC bug means, by definition, that we would
rather remove the package from the next stable release rather than ship
it with this problem. I doubt that that's true for the kernel. There
are other channels for fixing bugs than clogging up the release team's
queue with things they are just going to override if they have to get a
kernel image into etch.

I do think it's something worth discussing within the kernel team,
however, and you seem better placed than I am to start that
discussion. I am happy to help with code, but I don't know the guts
of kernel package all that well, so it may take longer than is worth
it for me to come up to speed with all the hooks and options that a
helper script would need to know about.

This is exactly like /etc/inetd.conf - no package 'owns' it in the
dpkg -S sense, but it clearly is owned by whichever of the inetd
implementations that you have installed, and there is a helper
script to update it.

Which is the correct script to update inittab? And where can I read
   more about it?

As far as I know, again, there is none. I think this is such a rare
need that no one has bothered to write one.

Ahem, then hwat do you mean by and there is a helper script to update
 it?

Taht paragraph is about inetd.conf. It is an example of a parallel
situation that is handled correctly. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I'll make Manoj and the rest of the kernel team aware of this
discussion, but feel that I have spent enough of his time discussing the
kernel-install-helper idea without taking the required time and effort
to actually make a proof of concept to move it further than just that:
 an idea.

Good.

the fast resolution for your package is to just stop writing to these
config files, and put a note in README.Debian that says roughly, add
these two lines to this file, and this line to that file. That would
close this bug while the longer term correct solution is being worked
  on.

For the case of lessdisks-terminal, the messing with configuration
files can even be moved to the user-invoked install routine instead,
as mentioned early on in this thread. The best would be to not be messy
at all, but I agree that sounds not possible for the short term.

If I undersatnd correctly, you want to move the config file editing out
of postinst into something the admin invokes? That would be perfect,
thank you.

Take care,

Bug#345845: When will we see the fix in sid?

2006-04-25 Thread Jon Kåre Hellan

Hi,

Thanks for telling me how to report this bug upstream:

 Java applets go blank immediately

I reported it as https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=322257,
which in turn is a duplicate of
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=315841. This bug is fixed
upstream.

The effect of the bug is that java applets don't work if adblock is
installed. For me, the consequence is that I have to use another browser
to do home banking. That works, but it's getting old :-)

Do you know in which version of Firefox the fix will be included?
According to mozilla.org bugzilla, target milestone is mozilla1.9alpha,
if that means anything. Any wild guesses about when we can expect to see
the fix in Debian?

For what it's worth, on Fedora Core 4, java applets work in Firefox
1.5.0.1 even with adblock installed. The package version is
firefox-1.5.0.1-1.

Bug#364725: kernel-source-2.6.8: IEEE1394 SBP2 disconnect problems

2006-04-25 Thread cm1

Package: kernel-source-2.6.8
Version: 2.6.8-16sarge2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

SBP2 causes problems when disconnecting devices such as CDROMs.
Sometimes, the system will hang when trying to suspend to disk or
unloading the IEEE1394 modules, sometimes it will hang when typing

  cat /proc/scsi/scsi

after unplugging a firewire SBP2 device.

I had a look at the kernel changes to sbp2.c and found a bunch of
changes which seemed related to my problem. I added them incrementally
on top of the official Debian Sarge 2.6.8 kernel and all [my] problems
were gone. I believe the changes are safe and others would benefit from
them as well.

I have attached a patch with the changes. All those changes were
back-ported from kernel.org, thus there's no invention (or crap ;) from
my side.

Thanks,
--Christian

Bug#364722: f-prot-installer defaults to loading updates when establishing a ppp connection

2006-04-25 Thread cm1

Package: f-prot-installer
Version: 0.5.14.sarge.3
Severity: important

f-prot-installer defaults to loading new virus signatures whenever a PPP
connection is established. I found this out the hard way when I was
travelling and established a [roaming] GPRS connection for 10 Euros per MB.

Even when not using GPRS I believe updating virus signatures whenever a
PPP connection has been estalished will be a nuisance because it will
degrade the connection throughput substantially for a few minutes when
using a typical modem connection with 10KB/s

I believe the default in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/f-prot-installer should be set
to not load new virus signatures by setting

  FPROT_USE_PPP=false

Bug#364723: modprobe 2.4.27 will not load ppp module for kernel 2.2.20

2006-04-25 Thread David Lawyer
Package: module-init-tools
Version: 3.2.2-1

When I'm running kernel 2.2.20 and give the command: modprobe ppp, I
get the message:
modprobe: Can't locate module ppp

Yet ppp.o is in the right place and other modules from the same
location can be found by modprobe. Version 2.4.26 of modprobe finds
ppp.o and loads it (along with dependencies). But Version 2.4.27
can't find it.

I just tried it while running kernel 2.4.27 (same as modprobe version
by coincidence). modprobe ppp doesn't load ppp since there is no
ppp module in the 2.4.27 kernel. But instead it loads ppp_generic and
some other modules so that ppp will work. Thus it seems that ppp has
been made an alias for other modules, but for kernel 2.2.20 one needs
to load the real ppp.o.

modprobe.modutils can't find ppp either. I suppose that modutils
calls modprobe.modutils since it should check uname -r to find out I'm
running 2.2.20. I sometimes use kernel 2.2.20 since it loads about
3 times faster than 2.6.15 (but I hoping to improve 2.6.15 booting
speed by finding the causes of it's slowness on my PC).

Bug#364715: Only testing works although I get a selection list: stable, testing, unstable

2006-04-25 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Andreas Tscharner ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
 Package: debian-installer
 Severity: normal

During the installation, the installer asks for an online repository. I
selected ftp.de.debian.org (from Germany). After that selection, I was
presented the list of the following three possibilities:
 stable, testing, unstable
As I am going to install Sid, I selected unstable which gives an error
later when I wanted to Install base system. Only testing works.

Well, as divination is actually not in the D-I team skills, we might
need to have more information about this error. IIRC, I succeeded in
installing unstable 3 days ago so you maybe just went on a specific
(and probably known) bug in unstable, not necessarily related to D-I.

Bug#364724: acpid: ACPI doesn't report power changes after resume

2006-04-25 Thread cm1

Package: acpid
Version: 1.0.4-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

ACPI often doesn't report power changes while the system is off or
suspended. For example, if you suspend a system on AC and resume it on
battery, no ACPI event is sent and tools like battery status applets are
still reporting the system to be on AC.

There are hacks which modify the ACPI tables to fake an ACPI power
change event during resume but I believe this is not suitable for
average users. Instead, I thought acpid would be a better location for
this kind of hack.

I modified acpid.c such that it will fake a power change event whenever
it receives a USR2 signal. In order to trigger this, I simply execute

  # trigger ac_adapter event in acpid
  killall -USR2 acpid

in my suspend/resume scripts as the last action. Works like a charm for me...

If you believe this might be useful for others, please have a look at the
attached patch. The event simulation code probably needs to be a bit
smarter to generate events which match the system it's running on but I
currently don't have access to other laptops running Linux so I can't
check what they would expect.

--Christian

Bug#364726: dpkg-source: please use --keyring /usr/share/keyrings/debian-keyring.gpg when available

2006-04-25 Thread Robert Millan
Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.13.17
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Would be nice if dpkg-source could use --keyring
/usr/share/keyrings/debian-keyring.gpg
when this file is available. This way it wouldn't be mandatory to keep our
~/.gnupg/keyring.pub
up-to-date for proper .dsc verification.

Patch attached.

Bug#364729: Should stop building libgnutls-dev and gnutls-bin

2006-04-25 Thread Jeroen van Wolffelaar
Package: gnutls12
Version: 1.2.9-2
Severity: serious

gnutls12 builds libgnutls-dev and gnutls-bin, which are now also
provided by gnutls13. gnutls12 got scheduled a number of binNMUs for
the libtasn1-3 transition. This doesn't work now anymore, because of
gnutls13 providing a newer version.

gnutls12 will need a sourceful upload -- or removal once the gnutls13
transition is completed, of course.

Thanks,

Hi,

the latest mutt segfaults each time it tries to sync a mailbox. My mail

mostly useless to me, if I cannot move, copy or delete mail.

Here is a backtrace (I don't know if this is sufficient, please tell me
if you need more and how to get it).

Bug#345845: When will we see the fix in sid?

Do you know in which version of Firefox the fix will be included?
According to mozilla.org bugzilla, target milestone is mozilla1.9alpha,
if that means anything. Any wild guesses about when we can expect to see
 the fix in Debian?

Not before firefox 3.0, except if upstream applies this to the 1.8.1
branch, meaning it could reach firefox 2.0.
There are too much changes involved in resolving this bug that we won't
apply it.

Applying the patch in
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=315841 requires first
applying patch from https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1156
which means breaking a lot of stuff and needing to patch a lot more.

For what it's worth, on Fedora Core 4, java applets work in Firefox
1.5.0.1 even with adblock installed. The package version is
 firefox-1.5.0.1-1.

It's either by chance or they applied a whole lot of patches.

Mike

Bug#364732: runit: runsvctrl - sv change confusing

2006-04-25 Thread Nicholas Humfrey
Package: runit
Version: 1.5.0-1
Severity: normal

I got a bit confused when upgrading from version 1.3.3 of the runit
package. Took me a while to work out that runsvstrl and runsvstat had
been replaced with the 'sv' command - which is great but just
wasn't sure where they had gone.

Perhaps there could be couple of shell scripts which warn about the
change of binary name, and then call 'sv' ?

Bug#364731: O: f-prot-installer -- F-Prot(tm) Antivirus installer package

2006-04-25 Thread Johannes Rohr
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the f-prot-installer package, as I definitely don't
have the time to maintain it. The package has been up for adoption for
many months now. While a number of people have expressed interest in
maintaining this package, nobody has actually done so.

The package description is:
F-Prot(tm) for Workstations is a powerful command-line virus
scanner. It can be run stand-alone or utilized by other packages
 such as mailscanner or amavis.
 .
Since the license does not explicitely permit redistribution, this
package doesn't contain the actual software, but downloads it from
the vendor's FTP site and installs it for you.
 .
The installer has been tested with F-Prot(tm) 4.0.0 and does not work for
 older versions.
 .
This package also comes with a maintenance script to keep your
F-Prot(tm) installation up-to-date. Furthermore a cron script for
automatic virus definition updates is included.
 .
If you install F-Prot for Workstations(tm), please take into
account the rather restrictive license terms.
 .
More info about F-Prot(tm) can be found at http://www.f-prot.com

Bug#364734: bugs.debian.org: mail to nnn-forwarded is filed, but not sent to the maintainer

2006-04-25 Thread Frank Küster
Package: bugs.debian.org
Severity: normal

Mail that is sent to bugnumber[EMAIL PROTECTED] is received
by the BTS and filed in the web page, but the message is not forwarded
to the maintainer.

I think this is generally a bad idea. If upstream knows a bit about the
Debian BTS, they will keep the bugnumber address in the Cc or To, but
many won't know the difference the -forwarded makes. But then the
Debian maintainer won't notice that upstream has answered unless they
check the BTS in the web interface.

Even if the person who started using nnn-forwarded stays in the Cc,
other maintainers won't notice the conversation. This happens both when
the others are simply subscribed to the package in the PTS, and when the
real maintainer address is a mailing list, or similar forms of
collaborative maintainance

I don't see why mail to nnn-forwarded needs any special treatment; I
suggest to simply handle it as any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Regards, Frank

Bug#364735: ufsparse: Descriptions are bad formatted

2006-04-25 Thread Alejandro Exojo Piqueras
Package: ufsparse
Severity: minor

The descriptions of the packages in ufsparse, are bad formatted
according to the policy. If you need to show some text literally, the
line should begin with two spaces, instead of one. This results in very
poor readability in package managers that format the description (e.g.,
aptitude):

$ aptitude show libufsparse
(...)
Descripción: collection of libraries for computations for sparse matrices
UFSparse is a collection of libraries for computations involving sparse
matrices. The package includes the following libraries:

AMD approximate minimum degree ordering BTF permutation to
block triangular form (beta) COLAMD column approximate minimum degree
ordering CCOLAMD constrained column approximate minimum degree ordering
CHOLMOD sparse Cholesky factorization CSparse a concise sparse matrix
package CXSparseCSparse extended: complex matrix, int and long int support
KLU sparse LU factorization, primarily for circuit simulation LDL
a simple LDL' factorization UMFPACK sparse LU factorization UFconfig
configuration file for all the above packages.

This package contains the dynamic libraries.

See the description of another package (e.g., k3b) for an example, or Section
5.6.13 of the Debian Policy.

Thanks.
Greetings.

Bug#364736: graveman crashes attempting to free invalid (NULL?) pointer

2006-04-25 Thread Menaka Lashitha Bandara
Package: graveman
Version: 0.3.12-4-2.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The error produced is:

 on va kill !
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x08368ab0 ***
Aborted

This happens, for instance, if I try to get it to Burn or detect
new devices on the system. I figured that it's allocating some memory
when the popup window comes up, but frees the memory twice.

The bug became prevelant after a glibc update. Literature quotes
that the newer glibc's are more vigorous with memory checks.

This problem is resolved, however, running this as:

G_SLICE=always-malloc graveman

Cheers,

- Lashi

Bug#330990: iso-codes .pot msgid strings contain non-ASCII characters

2006-04-25 Thread Paul Eggert
Alastair McKinstry [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Defining two charsets in the .po files really bites people who edit
the .po files with vi, etc.

True. Perhaps this could be worked around by using \u in the
msgid fields (does gettext support this? should it?) so that the msgid
part of the .po file is ASCII, even though the msgid itself is UTF-8.

For iso-codes a comment could be added, giving the msgid in the native
coding for the .po file (or perhaps an ASCII-ized version like
Aaland), so that people could read the msgid.

Hello Bas.

By default upstream's build infrastructure builds only static library.
Would it be enough for you or should I ask him to provide dynamic library

Hello Andreas.

As far as I can see correct permissions are available in
/etc/udev/permissions.rules which is in udev package.

Do I really need to include one more file for that?

Bug#364742: comixcursors: does not clean up alternatives upon purge

2006-04-25 Thread Lars Wirzenius

When testing comixcursors with piuparts, I get the following error:

All these would seem to go away if you only create one alternative. As
discussed on IRC, that doesn't seem to be what you want, so another
solution needs to be found. I'm attaching the log file, in case it is
useful, since it's short.

Bug#364720: jackd periodically zombifies on amd64 dual core systems

2006-04-25 Thread Robert Jordens
Hello!

[Tue, 25 Apr 2006] Matthew Yee-King wrote:
The -clockfix branch of jack CVS fixes this problem. The root problem
is that the TSC clock sources on the AMDx2 cores are not sync'd,
therefore time, as perceived by JACK, can appear to leap forward or
backward as the process migrates across the CPU cores. The -clockfix
 branch works around this feature.

That branch will hopefully marged soon into the main branch and thus
appear in a release. I don't know how well tested the patch is so I'm
not very eager to merge that into the Debian packages before it's
release by upstream.

And the problem seems to be fixed. Although now none of the debian
packaged jack apps recognise my jack server.

That's due to the tmpdir (and other configuration options) applied to
the debian package and due to libjack that is still there. Have a
look at debian/rules and use the same options. Also you should build
some dummy libjack packages with equivs that fullfill the dependency.

Robert.

Bug#314334: This bug causes apt to break on OCFS2 too

2006-04-25 Thread James Harper
I'm just testing OCFS2 as a root filesystem, and apt breaks because
OCFS2 (and probably GFS) don't support shared writable mmap's. For OCFS2
at least, this support is on the todo list but not really near the top.

Any chance of an updated patch or, even better, something that detects
at runtime what the underlying filesystem supports and adjusts
accordingly?

Thanks

James

Bug#364743: please add a note to the description on what squashfs is

2006-04-25 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Package: squashfs-source
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

I suggest that you insert in all the squashfs* packages' description
(squashfs-modules-2.6-*, squashfs-modules-2.6.16-* and squashfs-source) a note
on what squashfs actually is, such as this one from
from http://squashfs.sourceforge.net/:

Squashfs is a compressed read-only filesystem for Linux. Squashfs is
intended for general read-only filesystem use, for archival use (i.e. in
cases where a .tar.gz file may be used), and in constrained block
device/memory systems (e.g. embedded systems) where low overhead is
 needed.

This module provides some drop-in replacements for the string

when you test against long strings. If you've ever had to search
for text in a multi-line string like an HTML document, or find
specific items in binary data, this is the module for you.

From the comments in this bug log, it seems to only deserve being
closed as unreproducible and, hopefully, very likely to have been fixe
in more recent versions.

I hereby suggest closing in starting from May 1st unless there are
stronger objections.

Otherwise, we'd better mark it wontfix and still do nothing about it...Bleh.

When it comes at bugs that pertain to versions as old as 3.0.10, the
usual Samba Team answer is asking for attempts to reproduce it with
more recent versions.

So, is it possible for you to try reproducing it with sarge's 3.0.14a
or, way better, with etch's 3.0.22?

Otherwise, I'm afraid we'll forget about it and tag it
unreproducible.

Unfortunately I have no idea which exact style is responsible for the
problem. My guess is that upgrading to teTeX 3.0 (in experimental) would
help here, but hey, it's in experimental and we can not base LaTeX beamer
package on a package in experimental.

Now that teTeX 3.0 is in testing, and backports are available for sarge,
can you please test whether the bug still occurs?

Thanks in advance,

Bug#364564: udev: No X possible after upgrade

2006-04-25 Thread Tony A. Lambley
Hi, I've just been hit with this too. It would appear that the change
to udev has affected the way my local rules are processed. Perms are
no longer set as specified, and some devices are not being created
(dvd, cdrom, et al). KDE would not start until I manually change
perms to 666 for these /dev/ entries (might not need them all just to
get KDE up):

random
urandom
pt*
tty*
mixer*
dsp*
zero*
null*

Logging into a console or via ssh as a user gave the game away with
masses of:

/dev/null: Permission denied messages.

Maybe I have a problem with the syntax in udev.rules? This used to
work before the upgrade:

KERNEL=random, MODE=0666
KERNEL=urandom, MODE=0666

and so on...

And others like these no longer work:

BUS=ide, KERNEL=hdc, NAME=%k, GROUP=cdrom, MODE=0660,
SYMLINK=dvd
BUS=ide, KERNEL=hdd, NAME=%k, GROUP=cdrom, MODE=0660,
SYMLINK=cdrom

syslog contains udev messages, but do not give any clues to the lines
in error. E.g.

Bug#360128: please add regional_name variable for contry names

2006-04-25 Thread Robert Millan
On Tue, Apr 25, 2006 at 09:40:41AM +0100, Alastair McKinstry wrote:

I'll try to clarify it better with an example. Please have a look at the
attached screenshot.

This screen is what you see in d-i after you select Catalan in the first
question. Possible answers are Andorra (ca_AD), Spain (ca_ES), France
(ca_FR) and Italy (ca_IT).

While it is technicaly true that Catalan is spoken in Italy, it is only in a
small town in Sardinia (L'Alguer) where this happens.

However, in this case we're only targetting users in that town (if it wasn't
because of l'Alguer, this option wouldn't be here at all!). For clarity, it is
preferrable if users are asked if they live in L'Alguer (Italia) than just if
they live in Italy.

Of course, when referring to Italy in general context, we use Italia. That's
why we need a different identifier to avoid messing with the standard country
name.

A similar thing happens with the small Catalan-speaking region in France. We
Catalans call this region Catalunya Nord (northern Catalonia). Since the
installer is referring to this region of France, _not_ France as a whole, it's
better to identify it as Catalunya Nord (Franca).

and why not just use ISO-3166-2 instead?

Two reasons:

  - These codes describe government administrative divisions, which aren't the
same as language frontiers (and in most cases they're grossly different).

  - ISO-3166-2 would add more information than we need. For ca_FR or ca_IT,
it is enough to tell the installer that we live in France or Italy. My
concern is only about improving the debconf template so that it asks the same
thing, but in a way that is closer to our end user and easier to understand.
