Bug#368383: dumb manual page for... NAME section on many man pages

2006-05-22 Thread Brendan O'Dea
dotlock (1) - manual page for dotlock (GNU Mailutils 0.6.93)

This is the default NAME section generated by help2man. Fairly useless,
but there needs to be *some* default.

Suggest that you file bugs on the particular packages which need either
to provide a --name=short description argument, or a the [name]
block in an --include file (see coreutils/man/*.x for examples of the
latter usage).

Bug#368423: xfsprogs: xfs_fsr prints unreasonable error when XFS filesystem path argument ends in '/'

2006-05-22 Thread Matt R Hall
Package: xfsprogs
Version: 2.7.16-1
Severity: minor

xfs_fsr responds to its command-line arguments inconsistently:

Executing the following command fails:
$ sudo xfs_fsr -v /mnt/
/fileshare/: Directory defragmentation not supported

Executing the following command succeeds:
$ sudo xfs_fsr -v /mnt
...
$

I would appreciate it if this problem could be fixed to make the program
easier to use with bash completion, since bash completion appends a trailing
slash automatically.

Perhaps if there needs to be a difference, a warning could be printed and
execution could continue? Or perhaps there is some particular reason why
xfs_fsr should respond in this manner which is not obvious to me. Either way I
figured I should report this to do my part as a user.

Thanks,
Matt

Wait, so gp2c doesn't stand for GNU Pascal to C?

Or with purging, did you also remove all the config files?

2006-05-22 Thread Jari Aalto
Package: util-linux
Version: 2.12r-10
Severity: wishlist

THe paclage seems to contains lot of utilities. for easier management
it would be good if some of the programs were taken out into separate
packages. This would also make it possible to send bug reports to
correct targets more easy.

Also, it is a little surprising to find out:

  $ apt-cache search fdisk

since fdisk(1) and its derivates are pretty much stand-alone programs
used at the initial stage of new disk installs.

SUGGESTION

I propose that following utilities are put into their own packages:

- mkfs* + fsck*
- *fdisk*
- namei
- fdformat
- getopt

 I really can't tell. I'm not well-versed in the internal working of the

 _opt_repo_source_Sources
 files generated locally or downloaded from the mirrors? I saw them both dated

 They should be downloaded from the mirrors, though in this case the files
 of those names correspond to sources.list lines of

   deb file:///opt/ deb-repo/

 and

   deb-src file:///opt/ repo/

 Do you have valid Packages/Sources files in whatever mirror is mounted at
 this location(s) on your system?

Steve,

Now I understand. I don't have any source packages in the local
repository, and hence an empty Sources.gz file. Commenting out the
deb-src line in my sources.list solves the problem.

Please close the bug if it's the intended behaviour of apt (or at least
apt-src). It would just seem a bit harsh that the error of 1 out of many
repositories should stop it from working altogether.

Thanks for your time and enlightening me something more about debian.

I have been an exim user since 1998, and I do not remember ever having
used -bm, -bs and/or -bS.

For me, the most important option is -bt, followed by -oMr and -M.

See, three people, three opinions.

Additionally, the man page is generated upstream automatically from
the exim specification, and I doubt that upstream is going to change
that.

If you want to learn about exim, I'd suggest Philip's excellent book
published by UIT, which is more of a tutorial than a reference.

 But if I (1) know that I want to run the exim
 command, for instance I have a message that I want to send with it,

Exim is a drop-in replacement for /usr/lib/sendmail, and if you use
that, you'd get the bonus of being portable.

 but (2) I don't know the exact options to use; then the man page seems
 like a reasonable place to look. In exim's case, it is practically
 useless

I disagree. grep exists.

- the few options which comprise 99% of all uses are buried
 deep within the man page.

I disagree.

 It would be good to have this information somewhere in the man page.

Send a patch upstream.

 Sure, you get *some* order by listing things alphabetically; so I
 don't understand your aversion to having *more* order. Is order good,
 or what? Maybe having order is good when it's useful for defending
 your position, but not mine?

Order is relative.

Please provide i386 packages of amd64 kernels. 2.6.17 includes support for
running 32-bit iptables under amd64 kernel, so standard i386 Debian userland

I think so. Or maybe tag unreproducible?

Maybe it was an issue of a recently updated computer? I sledom see my
laptop behave weird because I almost never shut it down, but put it to
sleep and thus I have many upgrades during one power on. This
sometimes (I think) confuses some applications and the system starts
to behave weirdly.

Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I'm glad there is work in progress to integrate xen in the Debian kernels.
However, the current -xen kernels are mostly unusable :
- no System.map
- no config.version (that means no initrd)
- no (post|pre)(inst|rm) (this is not a real problem, at least, an
informative message
should warn the user about the lack of boot loader / initramfs automatic
configuration, and point him
to some doc)
- no doc (the doc should give a clue on how to configure grub, that is,
load the hypervisor as a
kernel and then kernel and initrd as modules, or at least a link to
xen-source.com)

I understand this is WIP, but at least System.map and config.version should
be provided to
make this usable to someone who knows how xen work.

Thanks,

Bug#368441: Add note about bold syntax and folding changes

2006-05-22 Thread Eric Wong
Package: vim
Version: 1:7.0-017+3
Severity: wishlist

I upgraded to vim 7 today and was very shocked when I saw that the
syntax highlighting has changed drastically from what I had gotten used
to since I started using it many years ago. I don't like the bold fonts
being used excessively at all.

Of course, my preferences shouldn't affect everyone, I'm sure whoever
made the bold font changes in vim 7 had good reasons to...

But to existing users like myself who have spent years inside vim, it
would be helpful to warn us of the changes, and provide some help for
those who'd like to keep their 6.4 font weights.

Here's what I've added to my ~/.vimrc for vim 7:

hi Identifier cterm=NONE
hi Comment cterm=NONE ctermfg=4
hi Statement cterm=NONE
hi Constant cterm=NONE ctermfg=1
hi Type cterm=NONE
hi PreProc cterm=NONE ctermfg=5
hi Special cterm=NONE ctermfg=5

I highly recommend adding the above lines into a source-able file
somewhere and most importantly, referencing it in the NEWS.Debian.gz
file so users will be informed.

Of course, I checked that Debian changelog and NEWS files before
submitting this report, and upon opening them, I saw that everything was
folded by default. Not very intuitive to new users, I suspect. I don't
recall using folds very much during my initial months with vim, so I
think setting

set nofoldenable

Would be a good default. At the very least, this should also be
documented in NEWS.Debian.gz

Thanks

Bug#368362: xmoto: breaks at startup

2006-05-22 Thread Rasmus Neckelmann

On 5/21/06, Samuel Mimram [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 The new level caching system causes xmoto to break for the second time

Hmm, initially I had the problem with i386 on linux too (it worked
fine on Windows), but finally got it to work on both Windows and linu
i386.

If it's related to that problem, the cause is in src/VFileIO.cpp (in
the bottom):

...

void FS::writeFloat_LE(FileHandle *pfh,float v) {
   writeInt_LE(pfh,*((int *)v));
   //unsigned char *pc=(unsigned char *)v;
   //for(int i=0;i4;i++)
   //  writeByte(pfh,pc[i]);
}

...

float FS::readFloat_LE(FileHandle *pfh) {
  float res;

   unsigned char *pc=(unsigned char *)res;
   for(int i=0;i4;i++)
   pc[i]=readByte(pfh);

   return res;
}

...

readFloat_LE() simply returns zero always, which causes the null
vector normalize exception later.

If one comes up with versions of the above functions that work on all
systems, my best guess is that the bug will go away. Unfortunately I
don't have a 64-bit system at hand, so I can't test it.

Actually I thought sizeof(int) == sizeof(float) on amd64? If that
isn't the case, there's an obvious reason to the problem. :)

 Workarund: Delete ~/.xmoto/LCache each time you run Xmoto

A more permanent workaround is to set LevelCache to false in
~/.xmoto/config.dat.

Bug#268121: manpages-dev: please include manpages for rpmatch

2006-05-22 Thread Michael Kerrisk
   +only the first character of \fIresponse\fP is considered significant.
   +Responses matching \fBm/^[Yy]/i\fP are always accepted as affirmative
   +(in any locale), and those matching
   +\fBm/^[Nn]/i\fP are always accepted as negative.

  This is more detail than I think is really required to explain
  the point. You already say that just the first character is
  significant. The additional RE isn't needed.
 But this happens for any locale; it is a behaviour to document, not an
 implementation.

Ahh sorry -- I missed that. I have actually written
the (IMO) clearer:

[[
Regardless of the locale, responses matching \fB^[Yy]\fP are always
accepted as affirmative, and those matching \fB^[Nn]\fP are always
accepted as negative.
]]

  .SH BUGS
  The \fBrpmatch\fP() implementation looks at only the first character
  of \fIresponse\fP. As a consequence, nyes returns 0, and
  ynever; not in a million years returns 1.
  It would be preferable to accept input strings much more
  strictly, for example (using the extended regular
  expression notation described in \fBregex\fP(7)):
  \fB([yY]|yes|YES)\fP and \fB([nN]|no|NO)\fP.
 Why not anchor with ^ and $?

Because I am fallible. Fixed now.

Thanks,

Michael

Bug#368442: libredcloth-ruby1.8: The regexp for strong (*) and bold (**) is greedy, which produces very strange results.

2006-05-22 Thread Bas Kloet
Package: libredcloth-ruby1.8

The simplest way to show the problem is to give an example.

This is the original code:

=
Strong:
Lets do a little test *t*
this should not be bold *u*.

Bold:
Lets do another test **t**
this should not be bold **u**.
=

And this is the (relevant part of) the html that is produced:

=
pStrong:
Lets do a little test strongt*
this should not be bold *u/strong./p

pBold:
Lets do another test btstrong*
this should not be bold */strongu/b./p
=

As you can see, the html produced is not exactly what you would expect.

 Hi,

 I'm glad there is work in progress to integrate xen in the Debian kernels.
 However, the current -xen kernels are mostly unusable :
 - no System.map
 - no config.version (that means no initrd)
use initramfs-tools to generate the initrd on the box itself aka:
update-initramfs -c -k kernelversion

where kernelversion is uname -r ouput.
or use mkinitramfs if you'll do it on another box.

 - no (post|pre)(inst|rm) (this is not a real problem, at least, an
 informative message
 should warn the user about the lack of boot loader / initramfs automatic
 configuration, and point him
 to some doc)
 - no doc (the doc should give a clue on how to configure grub, that is,
 load the hypervisor as a
 kernel and then kernel and initrd as modules, or at least a link to
 xen-source.com)

you may want to read the nice summary posted on planet.debian.org:
http://blog.andrew.net.au/2006/05/07#xen1

This is a common mistake: you need to either build it as root or use
fakeroot:

$ dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot

Alternatively, you can use module-assistant:

$ m-a a-i exmap

Which will compile and install modules for the currently running kernel.

 The long awaited release. Lots of enhancements and fixes across the board.
 See the changelog for details but a few notable changes are that mkntfs now
 creates NTFS 3.1 (Windows XP) volumes by default and that ntfsmount can
 deal with symbolic links and device files.

Indeed. I was sure to have been packaged it. O:-)

 Please package it ASAP.

I will do so.

Bug#360417: bootsplash

  SB Hi!
  As seen below, the package description refers to a userland package that
does
  not exist, hence making this code essentially useless. The repository
  mentioned as a workaround in previous bug reports is no longer active. This
  package needs to be added to the main Debian archine.

  SB There is a repository containing both bootsplash package and themes:

  SB deb http://debian.bootsplash.de unstable main
  SB deb-src http://debian.bootsplash.de unstable main

  SB see also http://www.bootsplash.de/ (its in english)

Yes, I'm aware of it, and indeed those packages were the starting
point for the new Debian packages. Everything is under SVN:

http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/demudi/bootsplash

and almost ready for upload. Basically the only left task is to
carefully check the logic of the postinst script. Unfortunately I have
little time to work on it at the moment :/

Bug#368423: xfsprogs: xfs_fsr prints unreasonable error when XFS filesystem path argument ends in '/'

 Mr. Scott,
 Thank you for your rapid reply! I greatly appreciate your dedication

No problem.

 On 5/21/06, Nathan Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Is there a filesystem mounted at /mnt? (can you include your
  /etc/mtab file please).
 This example was sanitized from a real-life configuration. Of course
 all of my filesystems are XFS, and there was one mounted onto the
 directory on which I called the command when the command was called.
 This shell session which should clear things up a bit more.

Ah, I understand the problem now.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/mtab
 /dev/loop0 /fileshare xfs rw 0 0
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo xfs_fsr /fileshare/
 /fileshare/: Directory defragmentation not supported
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo xfs_fsr /fileshare
 /fileshare start inode=0

The problem is as follows:
- fsr does a stat on the path its given
- if its a blkdev or a directory, it does an /etc/fstab lookup to
see if this matches any of the known, mounted XFS filesystem.
- the matching algorithm does a string compare on the given name,
and this turns out to be critical here, to the /etc/fstab device/
mount-point and looks for an exact match only (fixing this will
fix the bug here)
- if it finds a mount point, it begins a full filesystem scan
- if it does not, and its a directory, it simply reports that it
doesn't know how to reorganinse a directory, and exits.

So, the root cause of the odd behaviour you see is the strcmp on
path names. That should be doing a stat and a dev/ino comparison
as this is more accurate and not susceptible to differences in
the path (like your extra '/').

I'll get this fixed up tomorrow.

cheers.

Bug#358742: Encountered same problem as Matt Boes with cyrus21-imapd / 2.1.18-1+sarge2

Package: cyrus21-imapd

Followup-For: Bug #358742

Hi,

I encountered the same problem as Matt:
Since a few weeks exactly one user is not able to store mails within
his 'Sent' folder on the mail server.
There are some noteworthy aspects:
- The bug affects replies and mails with attachement, but not
  non-reply mails without attachements
- This behaviour is deterministic
- The bug occurs for all mailboxes which are accessed by this user
- The bug occurs only on one computer! If the user accesses his
  mailboxes from another computer, the bug is not present
- The user uses Firefox (sorry, don't know the exact version)
- The bug occurs also on Outlook and Outlook Express
- two different errors are logged:
  IOERROR: locking index for user.joe.Sent: Interrupted system call
  IOERROR: reading message: unexpected end of file

Can anybody tell me if the proposed fix does work?

Bug#368358: courier-authdaemon - fails to install

2006-05-22 Thread Frederik Schueler
Hello,

have a look at the

http://buildd.debian.org/build.php?arch=pkg=gnome-schedule

buildogs, version 1.0.0-1.1

virtually all architectures failed because courier-authdaemon failed to install
and
remove correctly.

The package was obviously not installed in the buildd chroots.

I had to manually add an exit 0 to the prerm to purge it, and kill
several processes by hand.

Best regards

You could however try the new 4.4 packages when they enter

Hi Josselin!

I don't want to play ping pong, but it seems that something fishy is
going on here.

On Sam, 13 Mai 2006, Josselin Mouette wrote:
 GDM already reads the locale in its startup script. Sessions started

 would only lead to overriding the user setting if he doesn't want the

My gdm init file contains is the one from the distribution and it reads
/etc/default/locale

My /etc/default/locale contains:
export [EMAIL PROTECTED]
export LANGUAGE=en_IT:en_US:en_GB:en
export LC_COLLATE=C
export LC_MESSAGES=C

(both tried, with and without export)

Still, my gdm failsafe xterm session has
$ locale
LANG=
LC_CTYPE=POSIX
LC_NUMERIC=POSIX
LC_TIME=POSIX
LC_COLLATE=POSIX
LC_MONETARY=POSIX
LC_MESSAGES=POSIX
LC_PAPER=POSIX
LC_NAME=POSIX
LC_ADDRESS=POSIX
LC_TELEPHONE=POSIX
LC_MEASUREMENT=POSIX
LC_IDENTIFICATION=POSIX
LC_ALL=

I checked that maybe my /etc/X11/Xsession.d contains something bad: I
added a file 00testlocale to it and just called
locale  /tmp/bla
and already there the settings are as above. So the settings are *not*
reset in one of my xsession.d files.

Best wishes

Norbert

 on each upgrade of the tex-common package, i'm being asked the same
 question over and over again: Group that should own the TeX font cache?
 It seems that the answer is not properly remembered by the configuration.

I've noticed that, too. I thought I had properly catered for the
renaming:

# The groupname question has been split up, but it need not be shown again
db_fget tex-common/groupname seen || true
if [ $RET = true ]; then
 db_fset tex-common/groupname_single seen true || true
 db_fset tex-common/groupname_multi seen true || true
fi
db_unregister tex-common/groupname || true

Does anybody see what's wrong with that? If it is run a second time
(e.g. once before unpacking, once by postinst), it should just do
nothing, because $RET is not true.

Bug#368446: cupsys-driver-gutenprint fails to install/upgrade

2006-05-22 Thread Jonas Meurer
Package: cupsys-driver-gutenprint
Version: 4.3.99+cvs20060521-1
Severity: important

hello,

At upgrading cupsys-driver-gutenprint, apt-get idles forever after
running '/usr/sbin/cups-genppdconfig.5.0 -u'.

a short look at the postinst script shows, that
'/usr/sbin/cups-genppdconfig.5.0' is invoked without an option after
'/usr/sbin/cups-genppdconfig.5.0 -u'.

on the console, '/usr/sbin/cups-genppdconfig.5.0' gives an error message
without options, but maybe this is the reason for the infinite delay in
the install/upgrade process.

Actually it seems to be more complicated. The dvipdfm adds new known
papersizes a6, b6, b5, b4, b3, and b5var. a6 stands for
ISO A6 paper. But the b* are not from the ISO series as one might
expect but from the JIS series. In (x)dvipdfmx one has aliases isob5

Well,

even --silent won't make the commonname mismatch disappear.

OTOH I don't feel like disabling warnings for SSL setups that at least
theoretically enable man-in-the-middle attacks - the user isn't supposed
to feel safe when in fact he isn't.

If the upstream server supports APOP, CRAM-MD5 or similar authentication
schemes, just not using SSL might be the easiest way to get rid of the
messages.

Is that an option?

Rafael Laboissiere wrote:

Package: libslang2

The slang_install_prefix was corrected to /usr in version 2.0.6-1,
closing Bug#353282. This means that some scripts that rely on
slang_install_prefix being correctly set to /usr fail when using
libslang2  2.0.6-1.

This is the case of jed's site.sl, as discussed in the thread initiated by:
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-jed-devel/2006-May/000703.html

Now, when the jed package is built, the dependency on libslang2 is
automatically set by dh_shlibdeps to libslang2 (= 2.0.1-1).  This
happens because this line in slang2's debian/rules:

   dh_makeshlibs  -V ${LIBSLANG} (= 2.0.1-1) --add-udeb=${LIBSLANG_UDEB}

We could circumvent the problem by forcing the dependency to libslang2
(= 2.0.6-1), but then we get an annoying Lintian warning about
duplicated dependencies (because we use ${shlib:Depends}).

At any rate, I am not sure that this is really a bug, but we (the JED
Debian group) think that tightening the makeshlibs -V option to 2.0.6-1
makes sense. Feel free to close this bug report if you think otherwise.

But isn't that what debconf is all about? We give the maintainer the

As you imply, though, we must check whether they have changed anything

 I have some quite large mboxes used for sorting out incoming mail. In
 previous versions of KDE I used korn to see how many new messages are
 in each of the boxes, and it was working fine until I upgraded to the
 current version of KDE. Now when I run korn, top shows that kio_mbox
 processes use 100% CPU and load average gets over 2.5, and the systems
 slows down considerably for several minutes. This repeats every time
 korn rechecks the mboxes for new mail. I wonder what kio_mbox are
 trying to do, but they're doing it very inefficiently, because e.g.
 gbuffy is working without problems on the same mailboxes.

  this is upstream bug 118926, and upstream claim it's fixed for KDE
3.5. Note that over a certain size, mbox are inneficient, because they
need to be parsed from line 1, whereas maildirs is only a matter of
directory listing (for the 'new mail' problem). so if your mailboxes are
*really* large, you may want to switch to maildirs anyway.

From what I saw/read under this and related bug reports the fishy
thing is that gdm doesn't propagate the language when you don't choose a
locale setting within gdm. I certainly didn't and there was at least one
poster (not sure wether here or in a related bugreport) who said
when he chooses a language through the menu of gdm, that language is
properly set.

The last thing of course is done through gdm's Xsession script, so I
think I'm right if I say that gdm does _not_ propagate the locale
setting read in it's init script. For whatever reasons, maybe the
environment is cleared with code in the source of gdm.

 Please, can you:

I agree. Wouldn't it be better to say:

Bug#368449: Please package documentation

2006-05-22 Thread Simon Josefsson
Package: gnutls13
Severity: wishlist

GnuTLS comes with extensive documentation. None of it is included in
Debian.

May I suggest to create a gnutls-doc package that contains:

 1) The GnuTLS manual in Info, HTML and PDF formats
 2) The man pages for the API
 3) The gtk-doc API manual in HTML and devhelp formats
 4) Example code (see doc/example/ in the source archive)

The manual is available under a GFDL-free license, and it does not
need latex2html or any other tool that is not in main.

If you need help with the cdbs stuff to include the files, look at the
source package shishi; it is a package for another project that
contains similar documentation style.

Thanks,
Simon

severity seems exagerated,
as packages are work under progress.
xen is far from stable itself ;)

Well, I suppose the gravity could be downgraded as you can generate a
initramfs image with initramfs-tools (didn't know this one, I mainly use
yaird). However, lacks of config and System.map are IMO a grave problem.

The other problems I report are mainly here for the records, I don't
exactly need doc etc (I used to compile a xen kernel myself before this
package was uploaded) but I think they are needed before this package
hits testing. I don't think the kernel team (or Bastian ?) needs help on
this, however I should be able to provide a patch if necessary.

you may want to read the nice summary posted on planet.debian.org:
http://blog.andrew.net.au/2006/05/07#xen1

Very nice summary indeed. I didn't noticed it (hard to find in google,
as most planet debian blog posts), but I'll point newcomers to it the
next time I'm asked how to do xen in debian :)

In the output of the lsof command, hpiod MUST be listening on a TCP socket
like this: TCP 127.0.0.1:somenumber (LISTEN).

That somenumber MUST match what was inside the /var/run/hplip/hpiod.port

Bug#368411: tex-common keeps asking the question about group on each upgrade

2006-05-22 Thread Norbert Preining
Dear Vladimir!

On Mon, 22 Mai 2006, Frank Küster wrote:

  It seems that the answer is not properly remembered by the configuration.

Does this happen when you do the follwoing:

Please get tex-common 0.22 and 0.23 (maybe you still have them in
/var/cache/apt/archives)

dpkg -i tex-common_0.22_all.deb
dpkg -i tex-common_0.23_all.deb

Now is this asked again?

If yes, please do:
dpkg -i tex-common_0.22_all.deb
export DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer
dpkg -i tex-common_0.23_all.deb 2 debconf.log

and send us the file debconf.log

Here on my PC I can up/down grade at will without getting any questions.

Best wishes

Norbert

That's the point of dpkg-*re*configure: It always shows all questions,
regardless of their seen flag. The flag is only honored when invoked by
dpkg upon installation/upgrade.

Hm. If the system was previously autodetected as being single-user, and
is now detected as multi-user (or the other way round), doesn't it make
sense to show the question again? The new multi-user setup might
require a different groupname.

Bug#363059: Bug #363059 still not fixed: Fails to install, missing dir to create alternatives.

2006-05-22 Thread Magnus Holmgren
reopen 363059

I think you made a mistake somehow. In debian/rules you (still) delete the
usr/share/icons/default directory soon after dh_installdirs create it:

# Don't overwrite system's default xcursor
rm -r $(CURDIR)/debian/crystalcursors/$(ICONDIR)/default

I think you should change this to

rm -r $(CURDIR)/debian/crystalcursors/$(ICONDIR)/default/*

or patch Makefile not to copy index.theme there.

Ironically, all *_src/Makefiles create the default directory if it doesn't
exist.

Pardon, the package works.

This don't make the included files broken.

Bastian

Bug#368411: tex-common keeps asking the question about group on each upgrade

  question over and over again: Group that should own the TeX font cache?
  It seems that the answer is not properly remembered by the configuration.

 I've noticed that, too. I thought I had properly catered for the
 renaming:

 # The groupname question has been split up, but it need not be shown again
 db_fget tex-common/groupname seen || true
 if [ $RET = true ]; then
  db_fset tex-common/groupname_single seen true || true
  db_fset tex-common/groupname_multi seen true || true
 fi
 db_unregister tex-common/groupname || true

 Although we should check here for groupname_singe and _multi, too,

Why should we? There's no point in setting the seen flag of a message
to its current setting, is there? We don't set any seen flag to false,
nowhere, do we?

 We should check before whether this question has been seen or not...

 So it should be

 while true; do
   db_fget tex-common/groupname_$groupname_variant seen || true
   if [ $RET = false ] ; then
 db_input $cache_debconf_priority
 tex-common/groupname_$groupname_variant || true
 db_go || true
   fi

I guess I'm just blind (frustrated by my measurements going wrong
today...), but: How should that have effect? If the question is
already seen, it won't be shown again anyway.

However, I have some other questions to think about:

- will there ever be a wrong entry in groupname, i.e. a non-existent
  group, from earlier invocations of the script? I guess no, but for
  upgraders we cannot be sure. Does that need special treatment?

- If the answer given the first time is a non-existent group, the loop
  is executed once more. However, I expected that the question would
  not be shown again, except when dpkg-reconfigure is used.

  However, this is not the case: The question is shown over and over
  again, during a fresh installation, until I enter a new value.

Anyway, if it turns out that Ralf's idea can be implemented without side
effects, dropping the whole stuff completely would be much nicer.

Bug#368450: cupsys: want dvi conversion built in by default

2006-05-22 Thread Francesco Potorti`
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-15
Severity: wishlist

Please, install the dvi filter by default in the Debian package.

It was not immediate to discover about it, and it took some time to
guess how to install it, as there are no explicit instructions.

It works, so again, please install it by default in the distribution.

At the very least, please add these instrucions to a
/doc/cupsys/examples/filters/dvipipetops.INSTALL file:

To use the dvipipetops filter:
- create an /etc/cups/local.convs file and add the contents of
  dvipipetops.convs to it
- add the contents of dvipipetops.types to /etc/cups/mime.types
- uncompress dvipipetops, give it exec permissions and put it in
  /usr/lib/cups/filter
- restart cups with /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Now you can directly print .dvi files with cups without first converting
them to ps.
