Package: ifplugd Version: 0.28-2 Severity: normal Hi, On my system ifplugd doesn't install smoothly. I'll cut and paste below the output of an installation. The problem seems to be the postinst script which has some dpkg --compare-versions calls. I briefly looked at the script, but didn't figure out what exactly is wrong. I'm just concerned when any package reports has any errors upon an installation. For now, ifplugd seems to have installed fine. Bug#373646: compiling em8300 with module-assistant would be nice
Hi Lance, What you have there looks like problems em8300 0.15.1 has with recent kernels, rather than a problem with module-assistant. I think 0.15.1 has problems with anything beyond 2.6.13 linux. (Which is why I'd like to have it updated ASAP. Unfortunately, I'm not a Debian dev, so I'm relying on Nicolas who seems to have been busy elsewhere, as of late.) But looking at the changes I've made updating the em8300 package, it looks like I did have to do something to get m-a doing things properly. Anyway, m-a support is something that has been worked on, and will be in the next revision, along with a bunch of other fixes. When I try to view such a file, firefox gives me the choice of saving it or viewing it with something lame like gedit. I most recently saw the problem with a patch or config file in a bugzilla. It happens elsewhere too, commonly. When there is no viewer for the given MIME type, firefox should use file extensions and file magic to determine the MIME type. There is a good chance that the new MIME type will have a viewer. Note that IE will _always_ prefer the file extension over the web server's MIME type, even if the web server provided a useful type. I don't expect this to go over all that well with the W3 cultists, but it sure would make more web sites work as intended. So I only ask that firefox attempt do do something useful when the server's MIME type isn't any good. How should he know if the mime type isn't good ? Divination ? Bug#372179: AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM overwrites $@
Hello Justin, Tollef, everyone, * Justin Erenkrantz wrote on Fri, Jun 16, 2006 at 09:12:11PM CEST: The point of our autoconf macro is to allow 'shortcuts', such that the argument --with-layout=Foo rewrites prefix/libexec/etc to a specific set of values (dictated by our file config.layout) and then have explicit passed parameters override those 'layout' files. Yes. But I think you would agree that having your own parsing routine that is almost a complete copy of the Autoconf one is not a common, usual way of using Autoconf, and that it's not encouraged by the Autoconf documentation to override the settings this way, nor do your own argument parsing at all. Right? The common way to do argument parsing with Autoconf is to use AC_ARG_WITH and AC_ARG_ENABLE. (Note I'm not arguing the usefulness of doing so for your needs; in fact, I understand that you do this. But if you want to be able to rely on Autoconf upgrades to not break your setup, you should push for changes to Autoconf itself so it provides enough interfaces so you don't need to do your own parsing. It's just not natural to do so.) It looks like you switched the docs to recomend using AC_ARG_ENABLE, but I'm not sure how that would address our issue. Paul pointed out that $@ won't stay constant througout the configure script. In fact, this has never been guaranteed. Apr was just lucky enough not to have been hit by it, and Autoconf wasn't careful enough to document that there is no such guarantee. (Although strictly speaking, one may argue that since the Autoconf manual doesn't give such a guarantee, you should not assume it.) Paul now fixed the documentation to state this non-guarantee more prominently (the mention of AC_ARG_ENABLE is just a hint at the macros to use instead). Let me repeat what I wrote in an earlier message in this bug report[1]: The AC_CHECK_PROG macro (for example) has overwritten the positional parameters _for years_, at least since Autoconf-2.13. From a pure Autoconf view, and I'm exaggerating here on purpose, relying on $@ to remain constant over the course of the configure script is akin to relying on undefined behavior in C. Now we all know there is a world of difference between a well-defined language such as C, and a mostly not so well defined language such as Autoconf-on-top-of-portable-Shell. But to speak of a major unexpected change as has been done in this bug report seems a bit exaggerated to me. I would even find a NEWS entry for this change in AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM to be more than necessary. We might be able to delay the AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM invocation until after we process the layout options - but I seem to recall a reason why we delayed invoking those macros. As as decent workaround, you could just save the positional parameters early after AC_INIT and restore them when you need them; good code to this end has already been posted in this bug report as well, see [2]. I see absolutely no need for Autoconf to do more for this bug. * Tollef Fog Heen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: | [...] putting some kind | of Debian-specific patch that saves and restores the positional | parameters (if indeed there's a way to do that) around | AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM. Apart from the «ewww» factor, why can't it do its work in a subshell and echo back the parameters to be set and those get eval-ed by configure? Because configure scripts are slow enough as they are; a subshell is a noticeable slowdown when done several times. Because avoiding echoing avoids the unportabilites of echo. Doing away with modifing $@ in general is needlessly limiting us to not be able to make efficient use of the only array variable that is available in Shell programming.[3] I hope this clears things up enough. Cheers, Ralf [1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=372179 [2] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=372179#msg49 [3] Eventually, Autoconf will make use of shell functions. At that time you will have no chance to have $@ survive the first shell function invocation portably (some older shells do not restore $@ after a function returns; I'm not sure whether they will be of concern any more then or not). So really the guarantee Paul gave in the message above is probably even stronger than we can give.

Bug#373980: openoffice.org: OOo crashes when Anti-aliasing is switched off

The first time this happend was after a security update recently (think it was May/June 2006). IIRC ttf-opensymbol was updated, so maybe the bug is within ttf-opensymbol. No, it wasn't. There was no OOo update in sarge so there logically wasn't a ttf-opensymbol one either. Did you mean libfreetype? Bug#365902: Debian xdg menu refreshed without localization
On Sun, Jun 18, 2006 at 01:54:15AM +0200, Sven Arvidsson wrote: reassign 365902 menu-xdg quit stop Still a problem with gnome-panel 2.14.1-1, menu-xdg 0.2.3 and menu 2.1.25 using sv_SE.UTF-8 Hello Sven, the bug submitter mentions that restarting gnome-panel fix the problem, therefore this is quite unlikely to be caused by a bug in menu-xdg or menu because all what they do is generating static files and gnome-panel displaying correct menus after the restart implies that the static files are correct. A second evidence is that KDE also use menu-xdg but so far report of wrong/missing menus where always reportedby gnome-panel users and never by KDE users. In my opinion, the issue is a race-condition between menu-xdg writing the new menus and gnome-panel reading it. Since updating the menus is something that will occur independently of menu-xdg, gnome-panel should be made more robust. Cheers, -- Bill. Bug#374029: Fixing inconsisten and unusefull Build-Depends/Conflicts definition
Peter Eisentraut [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Goswin von Brederlow wrote: On the other hand the savings can be huge. Think about how many packages install latex and fonts and generate the documentation needlessly during build. Installing and purging latex as well as all the initex runs and font generation takes up a awfull lot of time I think most packages build their documentation or other architecture-independent parts as part of a general make/make install process, so it's not possible to create useful separate build-arch and build-indep targets. A lot of software has a doc dir and it is relatively simple to seperate recursing into doc from the rest. Unless the build-* targets become actually usefull nobody will put any work into splitting the build process into arch and indep parts though. Looking at the archive right now, there are only 129 source packages (in testing) that are not Architecture: all and declare Build-Depends-Indep (and quite a few of those are obviously wrong). So it seems to be a limited problem. However, if your concern is mostly to reduce installation time of documentation tools, then the current Build-Depends/Build-Depends-Indep setup seems to work quite well. I don't see where Build-Depends-Arch would fit in there. The problem currently is that it isn't even possible to seperate them even if the makefile suports it because the build target must be called. The proposal is as much a clarification and extension of the Build-Depends* fields as a mechanism to detect and use build-* targets. Only then can one split arch and indep building and have a meaningfull Build-Depends-Indep. MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? This was already reported as #326201. Reassigning and merging accordingly. In my opinion at least DynaLoader should be compiled against different perl version. This error probably affect AMD64 version only, I haven't seen this problem on same system configuration, i386 version. Error occurred on Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 Sarge for AMD64 (from debian.org); perl 5.8.4-8sarge3, perl-base 5.8.4-8sarge3, speedy-cgi-perl 2.22-1. Apparently a recompile would fix this. Bug#373710: change back /lib/python2.4/site-packages to /lib/python
Hi Fabio, 2006. 06. 15, csütörtök keltezéssel 10.52-kor Fabio Tranchitella ezt írta: ... Debian didn't changed the distribution path. Taken from debian/rules: Confirmed that it should, indeed, be /lib/python. ./configure \ --prefix=/usr/lib/$(ZOPE) \ --with-python=$(PYTHONBIN) \ --force $(PYTHONBIN) install.py build AFAIK, there is no Debian modification and the upstream build system, when called as above, will install under $PREFIX/lib/python2.4/site-packages. Do you have any suggestion/patch to workaround this behaviour, instead of exporting ZOPE_HOME inside the skeletons? Yes. Please change --prefix to --home. I can not identify how the difference is triggered exactly, but note that the original Makefile also uses --home. About my original proposal, the ZOPE_HOME export: it is not necessary then, it seems however to be an upstream inconsistency, because if ZOPE_HOME is not exported, what is the point of defining it at all. (Not a Debian issue, just wanted to note it.) Attached patch that resolves the correct /lib/python path in rules. (Also please don't forget in addition to change the SOFTWARE_HOME paths in all the skeletons too.) -- Balazs Ree --- debian/rules 2006-06-18 13:45:43.0 +0200 +++ /tmp/rules 2006-06-18 13:30:37.0 +0200 @@ -84,7 +84,7 @@ # Install Zope and remove *.pyc cd z $(PYTHONBIN) install.py install \ - --skip-build --prefix $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope$(ZVER) + --skip-build --home $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope$(ZVER) find $(DEBIAN) -name '*.pyc' | xargs -r rm -r # FHS enforcement @@ -113,15 +113,15 @@ fi; else rm -f $$i~ ; fi ; \ done - rm $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/zope/formlib/LICENSE.txt \ - $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/Products/Five/COPYING.txt \ - $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/Products/Five/doc/ZopePublicLicense.txt \ - $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/docutils/COPYING.txt \ - $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/pytz/LICENSE.txt - - chmod 755 $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/DocumentTemplate/release.sh \ - $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ZPublisher/Client.py \ - $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ZPublisher/Test.py + rm $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/zope/formlib/LICENSE.txt \ + $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/Products/Five/COPYING.txt \ + $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/Products/Five/doc/ZopePublicLicense.txt \ + $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/docutils/COPYING.txt \ + $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/pytz/LICENSE.txt + + chmod 755 $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/DocumentTemplate/release.sh \ + $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/ZPublisher/Client.py \ + $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/lib/python/ZPublisher/Test.py chmod 644 $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/bin/stats.py \ $(DEBIAN)/usr/lib/zope2.9/bin/reindex_catalog.py \ signature.asc Description: Ez az üzenetrész digitális aláírással van ellátva

Just add a PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games Urgs, wait a second? Adding /usr/local/bin (where no debian package should ever put anything), /usr/bin/X11 (where only graphical stuff should be) and /usr/games (we have games doing debian archive work?) fixes the issue? That sounds seriously wrong. Reading bug 341326 it seems that any PATH=... will do that is long enough, e.g. PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/dsfasdfdsafdsa/fdsaf/fdasf/dasfdasfdas Better use something like that where there is no chance of accidentaly getting the wrong binaries, like an experimental gzip installed in /usr/local/bin. to the debarchiver cron-job command, so that it looks like this MfG Goswin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Please make this clearer in the documentation! It'd be great if you could add it in several places: - Put it in the package description. For example: Note: The Notification Area applet must be running for the NetworkManager icon to appear on your panel. - Put it in the nm-applet manpage more clearly - state that you have to add the notification area applet to the panel. The manpage talks about a notify-area, but I had no idea so far what that area is, and whether it was already existent on my desktop. - Put it in the README.Debian for both network-manager{-gnome,} The manpage points the user to /usr/share/doc/network-manager/README.Debian for the information on how to add nm-applet in your gnome notify-area, but that file doesn't discuss installing the applet at all. Bug#374301: liblocale-gettext-perl: Please extend documentation
Package: liblocale-gettext-perl Version: 1.05-1 Severity: wishlist I currently try to figure out how liblocale-gettext-perl works, so I started reading the man page, however, it just gives you a summary of the options. 1. Please either add the quick tutorial of /usr/share/doc/liblocale-gettext-perl/README.gz in the man page or put at least /usr/share/doc/liblocale-gettext-perl/README.gz in SEE ALSO. 2. So I marked up a test string in the source to see how it works. So I am at Step 4 in the tutorial. Now this is the point where additional information would be highly welcome. First, why do you mention msgfmt(1) here? At this step it is not needed and you actually refer to it again in Step 5. Then I don't think the suggestion to hand-write the .po-file is not very sensible as it causes lots of (unnecessary) work and is error prone. As an (sensible) alternative you write: You can use the xgettext(1) utility to initially construct this file from all of the gettext() calls in your source code. It was designed for C but it works OK with perl. I was (so far, still reading the xgettext man and info pages) unsucessful to create a useful .po-file. (So I don't know how you define OK) The main problem is how I tell xgettext which are my strings. First it seems to not like non-ASCII characters (I have some german comments atm) (got that working --from-code=ISO-8859-1). Then the file is almost empty, only the string in my $d = Locale::gettext-domain(rechnung); i.e. rechnung is offered for translation. (Which is of course wrong, as it is the gettext-domain, not a string in the programm). I tried playing with the -k option, unsucessfully. The only way to get all strings (and many more, unfortunately) is the -a option (and it gives a ton of warnings as well). Next I started reading the gettext info pages. They have a section regarding perl and even some examples (in /usr/share/doc/gettext-doc/examples/hello-perl) but those look differently from the documentation in this package. Finally I found, that -k --keyword=get seems to be the proper options (I could not get $d-get to work). 3. To aid along this, a small example (with a Makfile, like in the gettext docu above) should be included. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.11.deb-7-grsec Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages liblocale-gettext-perl depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii perl-base [perlapi-5.8.8] 5.8.8-4The Pathologically Eclectic Rubbis liblocale-gettext-perl recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software libre: http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#372179: AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM overwrites $@
(Trimmed Cc list a fair bit) * Ralf Wildenhues | Hello Justin, Tollef, everyone, | | * Justin Erenkrantz wrote on Fri, Jun 16, 2006 at 09:12:11PM CEST: | | The point of our autoconf macro is to allow 'shortcuts', such that the | argument | | --with-layout=Foo | | rewrites prefix/libexec/etc to a specific set of values (dictated by | our file config.layout) and then have explicit passed parameters | override those 'layout' files. | | Yes. But I think you would agree that having your own parsing routine | that is almost a complete copy of the Autoconf one is not a common, | usual way of using Autoconf, and that it's not encouraged by the | Autoconf documentation to override the settings this way, nor do your | own argument parsing at all. Right? The common way to do argument | parsing with Autoconf is to use AC_ARG_WITH and AC_ARG_ENABLE. I think the problem with that is APR wants a way to switch the defaults for prefix, exec_prefix, etc. Autoconf provides a set of defaults here. Those can be overridden by passing --prefix=, --exec-prefix=, etc to the configure script. For APR's --with-layout option to work correctly, it must be able to hook in between the defaults setup code and the option parsing code. Except that means it needs to parse the command line arguments itself (which isn't really a big deal when it's just looking for --with-layout=$opt or --enable-layout=$opt, but still a bit wrong). So, since this is hard and would require APR to reimplement parts of autoconf (the option-parsing code as well as doing the necessary hacks to get --with-layout into the --help output, for instance), it's not really an option. Currently, if configure is passed --sbindir=, it just overrides $sbindir without flagging that at all. If it, in addition to changing $sbindir, it'd set ac_param_sbindir either to 1 to show that sbindir is derviced from a command line argument or to the value passed on the command line. If we had this, APR_LAYOUT could check if ac_param_sbindir was set, and if so skip setting sbindir from the layout. Would this be an acceptable solution for both the APR and the autoconf people? -- Tollef Fog Heen,''`.
