Bug#383272: MLpcap test program build issue (libmlpcap-ocaml-dev)

2006-08-16 Thread Sylvain Le Gall
Package: libmlpcap-ocaml-dev
Severity: normal

Hello,

On Tue, Aug 15, 2006 at 11:51:12PM -0500, Tim Lavoie wrote:
 Hi Sylvain,

I'm attempting to use the Debian libmlpcap-ocaml-dev package, starting
with building and running the example programs. Building the test
programs appears to work fine, but the resulting programs don't appear
to do anything when run. In fact, adding a Printf.printf to the start
doesn't do anything either, nor are there error messages. They just
 exit immediately.

I believe I've got all my versions matching what is curent in Debian
testing, on x86 (AMD64, but in 32-bit mode).

Is this something you would have seen before? Please let me know if
 you have any suggestions.

This should be an issue ! I open a bug in the debian BTS.

Thanks for the report
Regards
Sylvain Le Gall

python-tmda be rebuilt to work with python = 2.4 or is it all over?

Thanks...

Its pretty easy to do that anyway... you'll note that none of the
traditional fsck binaries for other filesystems do this (libc in
particular is quite large, so not a good idea to link statically
all the time - waste of disk space if everyone did that too).

Apparently xvnc4server allows this syntax also as Ethereal trace shows
attempts to contact the server on the alternate port, but it is
not mentioned in the man file so I can't be sure.

Bug#383248: usplash: Please add a default debian splash theme

2006-08-16 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

I believe it is a bad idea to mix mechanism and policy, or in the case
of usplash to mix the splash screen implementation with the artwork
using it. I would recommend a separate package with some nice debian
artwork, instead of including it as part of the usplash package.

For debian-edu, I have made an debian-edu-artwork package with an
usplash image (still ugly, but we are working on fixing that. :). I
suggest some debian-artwork package is created to include an usplash
image, instead of adding it to the usplash package itself. This way
it is easy for all custom debian distros and users to select with
theme to install by selecting the artwork package they want to use.

Friendly,

Bug#383239: A few more details

2006-08-16 Thread Pedro Celestino dos Reis Rodrigues
Wen I say no more wireless operations are allowed, I mean that it is not
possible to make the interface go up again. Moreover, it is not possible to
remove the module. The command

modprobe -r ndiswrapper

hangs and never exits.

While not yet extensively tested, after trying to remove the module it seems
that applications relying on the network also hang. For example, it is not
possible to interact with kicker.

A reboot via telinit 6 (or other method) is allowed, but filesystems fail to
close cleanly.
After this the message

Bug#354533: problem is empty files

2006-08-16 Thread Frank Hart
It looks like there isn't a problem with experimental after all.
/usr/share/apt-cacher/apt-cacher-cleanup.pl kept complaining with the
error in the previous post until I removed all the empty files in
/var/cache/apt-cacher/packages (see attachment). So should I rename this
bug?

Bug#337938: [gmail] Bug#337938: bug in quake3-data when mirror is down

2006-08-16 Thread Marc Leeman
When I was installing quake3-data, I chose to install the shareware and
selected ftp.idsoftware.com as the mirror. However, if there are too
many users connected (like now), the installation fails, without asking
if I want to download from an other mirror.

quake3-data is due for an overhaul anyway, so we might add that too and
re-direct the user to the mirror select box when the md5 of the archives
are not correct.

- add an IMAP service to localhost:
  /etc/nagios2/conf.d/localhost_nagios2.cfg

service_description IMAP
check_command check_imap

- Start nagios

My nagios correctly reports this service as DOWN.

Can you please check whether the issue can still be reproduced with
nagios 2.5?

 Any ideas or opinions?

I would suggest to write an update-papersize.xml script (in pure
/bin/sh to avoid additional dependencies), that generates a file
/etc/papersize.xml from /etc/papersize and could be automatically
called when dpkg-reconfiguring libpaper1. The content could be:

?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?
!-- automatically generated by ... do not edit --
papersize
  papernamea4/papername
/papersize

That would allow for additional (e.g. height and width) information,
if the need arises in the future. On the XSLT side this file has
still to be parsed and some papernames have to be mapped (letter vs.
USletter).

Cheers, WB

This seems like hard to implement upstream. See the thread on

It is unlikely that this feature is going to be implemented any time

Bug#382186: Proposed changes to the debconf templates

2006-08-16 Thread Emanuele Aina

Christian Perrier notò:

(putting the BTS in CC if you don't mind...it's important to keep
record of that)

Sorry. Hit Reply intead of Reply to all... :)

Do you translate even dialog and readline?

Dialog was translated to DialogueReadline has been left
untranslated, but I actually think that we should translate it because
it's hard to understand...:-)

Dialogue is not very meaningful also...I should think about
something clearer (even if longer).

I don't think this is a shortcoming of the translation, but the English
message is not very easy to understand for normal users.

My suggestion was to prioritize GNOME and KDE, as those are the right
answers for casual users.

dialog and readline are for very technical users, which know their
meaning, and are not meant to be translated as they are the name of the
two libraries used by the respective backend.

This was my proposal:

The GNOME and KDE frontends are modern graphical interfaces,
fitting the respective desktops environment (but may be used in any
X environment). The dialog frontend is a full-screen, character
based interface, while the readline frontend uses a more traditional
plain text interface. The editor frontend lets you configure things
using your favorite text editor. The noninteractive frontend never
asks you any questions.

It could be made even more clear that the GNOME and KDE items are the
answers to be selected by normal users.

Bug#382474: capi4hylafax: c2faxrecv problem with anonymous incoming calls

i have a problem with c2faxrecv and as result with faxrecv and
faxdispatch:

when an incoming fax-call provides the cidnumber, everything is
fine - the fax is converted to pdf and will be delivered via
email. but when the incoming call is anonymous (without
cidnumber) it seems that faxdispatch a) isn't called or b) cant
handle the empty string for cidnumber.

Please try with a newer version of capi4hylafax. You can recompile
it to get it working on sarge, if you know how to do
that. Alternatively, please have a fax that is not working for you
sent to me, on +31 24 360 67 12 (and email me to warn me it has
been done, so that I go looking at my logs).

hm.
i have capi4hylafax_01.03.00.99.svn.297.orig.tar.gz but only
libcapi20-dev(1:3.6.2005-01-03) and libtiff4-dev (1:3.7.2-7)

Please get

 capi4hylafax_01.03.00.99.svn.297.orig.tar.gz
 capi4hylafax_01.03.00.99.svn.297-3.diff.gz
 capi4hylafax_01.03.00.99.svn.297-3.dsc

from the pool/main/c/capi4hylafax directory of any Debian
mirror. Install packages build-essential and devscripts. Then do
(replacing $EDITOR with your favourite editor):

 dpkg-source -x capi4hylafax_01.03.00.99.svn.297-3.diff.gz
 cd capi4hylafax-01.03.00.99.svn.297
 $EDITOR debian/control
 # In the line that begins with Build-Depends, remove the parts
 # between parentheses.
 # save file, exit editor
 debuild -uc -us -b
 cd ..
 # The newly built .deb's are there. Install them and try.

ok, that worked perfectly - thank you for that information.
i now have capi4hylafax-01.03.00.99.snv.297 installed on my Sarge-System.

Incoming calls with CIDNumber and normal calls without CIDNumber
(anonymous) are handled like they should be.
Now i wait for someone to help me with those faxes, that subscribers can
send using their web.de or 1und1.de accounts. They send a CIDNumber that
results in truncated parameter strings.

I hope i will be back soon with more information.

Bug#383189: xaralx: New upstream and some ideas

So the extra packages are currently named xaralx-*?
That means, that the upcoming name change involves even
 more packages.
Do you think, that this is a good idea?
 (meaning more transitional packages, etc.)

It's not too bad: Current xaralx is only in unstable and stable, so the
transitional packages will only need to be around for a few weeks, and
definitely not in etch.

 I've retitled it.
Thanks

It would be nice if the user could specify, in his
$HOME/.icewm/preferences file, a shell script filename for using as a

Hm, how ist that different to those?
file:///usr/share/doc/icewm/html/icewm-3.html#ss3.3

See icewm-session description for details, you need to run that one.

where the script would be run only at IceWM's first start-up (e.g.
FirstStartupScript); other, where the script would be run only at any

Uhm... as in 3.3? The only missing feature is a missing restart
script, IIRC it should have been added to recent version, but I cannot
discover it in the CVS repository yet.

I could mount all the md manually, so correct modules were there.

hmm, i'm still wondering what's going on as you described that everything
was there. nothing shouting out of dmesg, as expected as your devices

as last resort please send the initramfs debug log,
you will get it with adding debug as boot param.
this will be a mostly silent boot and the log is at

  postrm_hook = /sbin/update-grub

No ramdisk = line there. Ok - then you use the default ramdisk
generator as decided by the kernel packages - currently initramfs-tools.

aboves do_bootloader = no indicates that grub should be used for
booting. if you want that the linux image runs lilo at the install
time of any linux-image you need to specifiy do_bootloader = yes.

and also tell us if you've run some custom ramdisk-building scripts
yourself, in addition to the stuff done automatically by the kernel
   image postinst routines?

  I do not know what is a«custom ramdisk-building scripts».
I just know I had had an issue when I switched from 2.6.12 to 2.6.15
some months ago, and I believe to remember that some line related to
*ram* was to be added or modified in some configuration file.

If unaware of it, then probably - and hopefully - you don't :-)

the posted errors were clearly from an initrd-tools generation.
this is since long not debian-kernel business.

Also, do you have lilo installed? Do you use it, or do you use GRUB
   or another bootloader?

Yes, I use lilo. Grub is also installed.

This may be the cause for the trouble, then:

the default ramdisk generator for Debian, initramfs-tools, until
recently (and perhaps still?) did not handle lilo correctly.

we handle the double installed case wrongly in the sense that
we don't check for the setting, but just omit a *big* warning.

here with this /etc/kernel-img.conf it would have been really
fine to do nothing.
anyway i'll fix for the next upgrade to double check that variable
if both grub and lilo are installed.

When I installed kernel 2.6.16 (today), grub configuration file was
automatically updated, but I had to update (by hand) /etc/lilo.conf,
and then run lilo (as root).
I use lilo, because I know how to add a kernel and modify option in
lilo. I do not use grub, because I do not know grub configuration,
and lilo works fine till now.

It should be no crime to run lilo. But it is arguable more fragile than
GRUB, and for most standard setups, GRUB is handled almost
 automatically these days.

yes grub is much easier to handle.

I see. When the installation was made, the device was /dev/md0 which is
suddenly /dev/md/0 in the initramfs boot stage without any symlinks.

It seems likely that this is actually bug #382263. Could you please try
updating mdadm with the experimental deb package provided in that bug

Bug#383267: postinst incorrectly concatenating apache/server-name with value

2006-08-16 Thread Matthew Exley
Package: apache
Version: 1.3.34-3
Followup-For: Bug #383267

I did a set -x on /var/lib/dpkg/info/apache.postinst

After doing the db_conf section, I noticed this:

+ db_set apache/server-name apu.exley.net
+ _db_cmd 'SET apache/server-name' apu.exley.net
+ printf '%s\n' 'SET apache/server-nameapu.exley.net'
+ IFS='
'
+ read -r _db_internal_line
+ RET='10 apache/server-nameapu.exley.net doesn'\''t exist'
+ case ${_db_internal_line%%[ ]*} in
+ return 10
dpkg: error processing apache (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 10
 Errors were encountered while processing:
   apache

...Looks to me like there's a missing space between var and value,
although I'm not sure

This bug also applies to apache-ssl which is failing with the same
problem (I don't know how to link the bug to two packages, my
apologies).

further checking shows the problem is in
/usr/share/apache/postinst.common, lines 163-184. The bug is manifested
by the call to db_set on line 186, but I think it's introduced in the
awk call in line 164. Actually, I'm not sure that the problem isn't in
_db_cmd itself

Bug#263610: CPU bus would be nice!

2006-08-16 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

I suspect the best way to solve this is by adding some mapping from
DMI information to modules and packages. DMI includes info on CPU,
memory, BIOS and chassis type. Check the output from dmidecode to get
an idea what kind of information is available.

Otherwise I would not make recommendations on English.

That's fine, according to wikipedia I left you several hundred

native English speakers that you can use for other arbitrary
appeals to

authority if you'd like. :)

I'm making a recommendation based on my qualifications and
experience. I think that's a reasonable thing to do.

reject your claim of authority over what constitutes the correct
spelling
of a loan word whose source form includes diacritics not present in
standard
English.

According to the dictionary you quoted, voila is only a variant of
the primary form voilà. Primary forms are preferred over variants.

If they were universally preferred, the variants would not exist.
Your

claim was that the primary form was correct, and the others are
incorrect; I think this is presumptuous and unsupported by common
usage.

Primary forms are preferred over variants because they are recognized
as the majority usage.

or not using it at all.

Which would be a fair recommendation, but such an interdiction
doesn't carry
much weight if you don't have consensus on the question of what is
or isn't
an acceptably correct form.

I'm agreeing with your dictionary quotation.

No, you're claiming that variant spellings are wrong. I think this
is the
first time I've ever seen someone claim a word's presence in a
dictionary is

*evidence* that it's incorrect...

The dictionary states that voilà is the primary form. I support
this.

It would only waste time if we compared different dictonaries and
got into

research papers.

Yes, it would.

Quite frankly, I consider that the translators' problem, not the
maintainers'. It is quite reasonable to constrain source English
strings
with style rules concerning consistent use of vocab, forms of
address, and
UI references because these are rules that benefit the primary
audience of
the string: the user. Subsetting the language for the benefit of
translators, OTOH, is a misoptimization which impoverishes the user
experience and deprives the translators themselves of opportunities
for
enrichment.

I don't think making translators look up variants of loan words is
useful. In my experience of translation projects, loan words in
general are often misunderstood, causing an incorrect translation.
The GNOME developer's choice to spell né as ne confused nearly
all the translators, and wasn't recognized even by the French
translators.

Er, this isn't at all analogous. The *feminine* form née/nee
exists in
English, because it's used to denote the maiden name of married
women --
since there is no tradition in the English speaking world of men
changing
their surnames, there is no corresponding masculine form in common
use.
This makes ne a misspelling (of either the English or the French,
take
your pick), not a variant, whereas it's easy to find nee with or
without

accent in an English dictionary.

Oh, entertainingly, m-w.com does list né, but unlike for née and
voilà, it doesn't recognize an accentless variant. shrug While
I might

get it into my own head to be clever enough to use a masculine form in
English, I wouldn't rely on an English dictionary to support such a
usage
anyway. For that matter, I don't really care very much for m-w.com
as a
dictionary, but that's beside the point -- namely, that there is
not Debian
standard dictionary for English and you're not likely to get one
when there
are hundreds or thousands of native speakers involved in the
project who

each have their own local language preferences. Yes, we should avoid
unrecognizable spellings that are incomprehensible to translators,
but do
you really think any translator is going to have trouble finding
voila in

a dictionary?

Based on my experience, translators will find it confusing, and
ignore it, resulting in an incorrect translation. I have seen this
happen so often in translation files, that I take the time to
recommend developers avoid using uncommon forms of words. Since
you're dealing with people for whom English is not their native
language, using the most common forms of language maximizes your
chance you will be understood correctly, and thus translated correctly.

I don't mind taking the time to put in a bug report, or to provide
some additional information, but I don't have time to waste. I don't
think you're listening to what I say. That's up to you. I have work
to do.

The package in unstable is indeed fine, the python-dbus maintainer

Bug#203211: Software patents and Debian

2006-08-16 Thread Bas Wijnen
Hello,

When looking for some video-editing software, I found avidemux. According to
the wnpp bug, there is a problem with license issues regarding the MPEG2/MPEG4
codec. There is a software patent on this codec, and a paid license is needed
in order to use it, appearantly.

My question is how Debian handles software patents. I thought we didn't care
about them except if they were actively enforced, because it's completely
impossible to avoid all patented software, considering the junk that gets
patented. If that is the case, would any of you know if the MPEG[24] codec
patents are actively enforced? In other words, can this be in Debian?

Thanks,
Bas Wijnen

Ps: Please keep me CCd, I'm not on the list.

Bug#358543: postinstall of apache and apache-ssl 1.3.34-3 also fail - db_* workaround may help

The same bug is in versions 1.3.34-3 of apache and apache-ssl.

The workaround (quoting the db_set lines) worked for apache-ssl, but the
postinstall script of apache needed another quoting of other db_* lines.

For me, an strace -f of the dpkg -i command revealed the error (when
looking for the exit error code).

Bug#383280: libimage-size-ruby1.8: This sentence no verb

2006-08-16 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
Package: libimage-size-ruby1.8
Version: 20040618-1.1
Severity: minor

Hi!

The long description lacks several things: like a verb for the first
sentence. The formating doesn't work neither, the second line will get
added to the first, as it's a whole paragraph.

What it is missing most is what the package is about. Yes, it's in the
package name, and the synopsis (short description), but the long
description shouldn't have to depend on those.

Pretty please make the long description a bit more verbose.

 Thanks in advance.

The bug appears to have been fixed.

However, users of non-MIME-capable MUAs (or those who access their mail
archives with traditional Unix text processing utilities) would probably
appreciate it if Thunderbird didn't use =?UTF-8?B?..?= encoding in the
headers. Mutt seems to only encode words containing non-ASCII characters,
and it prefers ISO 8859-1 whenever possible.

Example: Mutt encodes the From line Marko Mäkelä as

From: Marko =?iso-8859-1?B?TeRrZWzk?= [EMAIL PROTECTED]

while Thunderbird encodes the whole string in UTF-8:

From: =?UTF-8?B?TWFya28gTcOka2Vsw6Q=?= [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is related to 381389 (a bug in dh_python). But until that is fixed
you can work around it by updating your python to 2.4.

(basically `apt-get install python` from unstable)

I'll leave this bug open until I can build-depend on a new debhelper.

Bug#381389: Reproduceable, and not smart-notifier's fault

2006-08-16 Thread Brian Sutherland
On Sat, Aug 12, 2006 at 12:17:21PM -0300, Margarita Manterola wrote:
I can reproduce this in my machine. It's due to the fact that
/usr/bin/python points to python2.3 in my box, and smart-notifier's python
version is current. Changing this in /var/lib/dpkg/status, fixes this
 bug.

Therefore, as discussed with Pierre Habouzit, this is a bug in dh_python,
which is not placing the correct version in the Python-Version field, and

It looks to me like this is what happens:

smart-notifier has XS-Python-Version set to 2.4 but the binary
package gets Python-Version current if built with python2.4 as the
default python.

In my tests with python2.3 as the default, Python-Version is set to 2.4.

In both cases there is no python dependency (only python2.4).

So anyone installing smart-notifier built with python2.4 as the defualt
on a machine with python2.3 as the default experiences breakage when
python-central tries to compile the bytecode for python2.3.

It seems to me that dh_python should set Python-Version to x.y if
XS-Python-Version is x.y regardless of what the current default python
is. At least that is what I would have expected.

 I'm reassigning to debhelper (I'm sorry :-/)

:) No worries. Just my luck to update this in the middle of a python
transition!

See the upstream report (FireGL Vx200 is based on the X1xxx series).
You'll have to use the vesa or fglrx driver.

Bug#383284: rails routing error on base project

Package: rails

Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After following the instructions /usr/share/doc/rails/README.Debian, the
welcome page has

Routing Error
Recognition failed for /rails/info/properties

under the javascript fold out (About your applications env.). This is
the case in both Firefox and Konq., and occurs with both WEBrick and
Lighttpd. This did not occur on the previous version (1.1.4), and
rolling back to this package confirms this. Creating a simple scaffold
using ruby script/generate scaffold Users creates the correct files but
encounters routing errors when run as well.

Bug#374418: [intl:fr] nagios2 debconf templates translation

2006-08-16 Thread Thomas Huriaux
Hi,

 W: nagios2-common: select-with-translated-default-field nagios2/httpd cs.utf-8
 W: nagios2-common: select-with-translated-default-field nagios2/httpd fr.utf-8

Please don't mark the Default: field as translatable, unless really
needed (default language, default country, etc.).
In your case, you should remove the underscore from the following lines:
  _Default: apache2
  _Default: false

Just run debconf-updatepo, the translations will be automagically fixed.

Translators, you have nothing to do to fix your translations.

Bug#383285: apache: Error 10 in postinst

2006-08-16 Thread Vincent Bernat
Package: apache
Version: 1.3.34-3
Severity: important

Hi !

This bug may be related to #366843.

When configuring, apache fails in postinst with error 10.

Here is the end of sudo /usr/share/debconf/frontend sh -xv
/var/lib/dpkg/info/apache.postinst configure :

+ db_set apache/server-name localhost
+ _db_cmd 'SET apache/server-name' localhost
+ printf '%s\n' 'SET apache/server-namelocalhost'
+ IFS='
'
+ read -r _db_internal_line
+ RET='10 apache/server-namelocalhost doesn'\''t exist'
+ case ${_db_internal_line%%[ ]*} in
+ return 10

I don't understand why server-name and localhost are concatenated at
the third line. This is the result of $* (maybe this is IFS related
?). I have this bug on two different systems.

Not sure, but I usually track testing (but sometimes use sid also).

You'll have a version of dpkg that logs package
installations/upgrades/removals in /var/log/dpkg.log then.

Bug#203211: Software patents and Debian

My question is how Debian handles software patents. I thought we didn't care

Some days ago I saw a Legal Mini-FAQ[1] for FFmpeg which says, among
other things:

Q: Since FFmpeg is licensed under the LGPL, is it perfectly all right
to incorporate the whole FFmpeg core into my own commercial product?
A: You might have a problem here. Sure the LGPL allows you to
incorporate the code. However, there have been cases where companies
have used FFmpeg in their projects, usually for such capabilities as
superior MPEG-4 decoding. These companies found out that once you
start trying to make money from certain technologies, the alleged
owners of the technologies will come after their dues. Most notably,
MPEG-LA (licensing authority) is vigilant and diligent about
collecting for MPEG-related technologies.

Anyway, ffmpeg[2] is included in Debian

Hi Daniel, Kel and all the others,

I'm using the init.d script from Russell Stuart[1], to start my
ipw3945d. It works very well, because it uses the original Intel
scripts.
In my eyes starting a deamon over init.d is the best way, but I hope
you will be able to choose the best way for _this particular_ daemon.

Removing /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.2/xineplug_inp_smb.so solves it indeed.

Bug#383288: failure to add rules for one port results in multiple rules added for other ports

Package: fail2ban
Version: 0.6.1-10
Severity: normal

I just ran into a situation where fail2ban could not add a rule for
the SASL subsystem. Thus, it flooded the log, trying again and
again, and each time, it would execute the fwstart rules for the
other ports, so I ended up with several dozens of SSH rules added by
fail2ban's SSH target's fwstart configuration option.

If a rule fails to execute, maybe only retry it, not all rules?

I just had a look at the PO. I looks to me the merge didn't work properly.
E.g. an obvious mistake:

This renders the German PO unusable.

I will work on updating the whole PO-File, but it will take me a while. I am

Bug#383291: cupsys: cups-driverd list enters an infinite loop

2006-08-16 Thread Joshua Pritikin
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.2-1
Severity: important

I am unable to add printers. I tracked the problem down to cups-driverd.
To test, I run cups-driverd like this:

/usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-driverd list 1 1 ''

Debug output and strace shows that it reads all the ppd files. Then
it enters an infinite loop. I tried removing the last ppd files by
renaming linuxprinting.org/Xerox to .Xerox. This rename had the
intended effect that cups-driverd no longer scanned the Xerox ppd
files. However, it still entered an infinite loop after Tektronix.

I also tried moving away the whole linuxprinting.org-gs directory.
This had the intended effect that none of the linuxprinting.org-gs
ppd files were scanned. However, cups-driverd still entered an
infinite loop, as before.

This is a very serious problem. Not being able to add printers
makes me look like a fool. ;-)
