Bug#396056: pdebuild: does not tell anything when package build failed
Package: pbuilder Version: 0.159, 0.160 Severity: normal I spent some time trying to see why some packages which previously built suddenly do not build any more. It is in fact not pbuilder's fault, but I have only recently activated the PKGNAME_LOGFILE flag, and it took me some time to realize that when a build fails in this case, the only information is in the log. pdebuild only exists with non-zero status, and does not even report that there was an error. IHMO, it should report that, and tell the user in which logfile to look for details. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (90, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15.4-smp-gbbde1285 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages pbuilder depends on: ii cdebootstrap 0.3.11 Bootstrap a Debian system ii coreutils 5.97-5 The GNU core utilities ii debianutils 2.17 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii debootstrap 0.3.3 Bootstrap a basic Debian system ii gcc 4:4.1.1-13 The GNU C compiler ii wget 1.10.2-2 retrieves files from the web Versions of packages pbuilder recommends: ii cowdancer 0.23 Copy-on-write directory tree utili ii devscripts2.9.22 Scripts to make the life of a Debi ii fakeroot 1.5.10 Gives a fake root environment ii sudo 1.6.8p12-4 Provide limited super user privile -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#396065: in graphical installer, boolean queries look inconsistent
Package: debian-installer Severity: minor I think it's a bit weird the way boolean queries are represented in the graphical installer. Normaly, when a program displays a checkbox, an indicative sentence follows, e.g. Do this., but the d-i gui chose to use checkboxes for a field that contains a question instead, basicaly looking like this: [x] Do this? (see attached screenshot) I think this looks inconsistent, because it doesn't follow the de-facto standard about checkboxes, where you never see a question following a checkbox. One would rather expect something like: [x] Do this. Since that would require changing the debconf template, which could be considered inappropiate, I suggest: Do this. It's probably easier to mount the partition before starting the strace and writing the log directly to it. One other thing to be aware of is that the frontend will be restarted by inittab after a crash and possibly that could overwrite an earlier trace. You may want to disable that. Bug#391717: ~/.gender and $GENDER
Miriam Ruiz said: Hi, I think it's a great idea to find a way to use gender in i18n. I think it makes the system much more user-friendly and I fully support the idea. I'm not sure if /etc/passwd and GECOS is the proper way to handle that, anyway. I wouldn't really like a gender field used for anything else than i18n. For example I think it would be a horrible idea to have the user's gender appear in finger reports. I repeat that I wouldn't like having a gender field for anything else than i18n. I don't know what the best technical solution is, but I like the idea of being able to have my system referring to me in feminine for a change, and I guess many female users whould thank that too. Thanks for bringing this topic. Well, my concern is only with i18n. Thinking again about it, I tend to agree with you in that GECOS might not be the right place. I think users should be free to modify their gender status within the system (e.g. to correct mistakes, update their status after sex change, whatsoever). After all, this represents how the user _wants_ to be addressed by her own programs much like locales do. I propose the following spec/plan: - ~/.gender file is a shell script that exports GENDER variable. - adduser creates that file when adding a new user. - so does d-i. - We modify the default bashrc script to source ~/.gender if it exists. - $GENDER variable is available to be checked from anywhere (typicaly gettext). -- Robert Millan My spam trap is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Note: this address is only intended for spam harvesters. Bug#394418: question for ARM porters: incomplete arm v3 support in etch?
On Fri, Oct 27, 2006 at 09:50:44PM -0700, Steve Langasek wrote: Hello, Bug #394418 is a report filed regarding a recurring build problem with mono on arm that results from mono generating code that's incompatible with the arm v3 instruction set. Likewise, it appears shadow fails to build on elara (one of the netwinder buildds) due to an illegal instruction from xsltproc, but not on the newer buildds. I'm inclined to tag 394418 etch-ignore, because most of the arm buildds (all of the faster ones) are capable of handling newer instruction sets, and the autobuilder for stable-security on arm is among those that can. But before I do that, I want to confirm: do the ARM porters consider this reasonable? Should support for arm v3 systems be considered release-critical on this architecture? And if so, is someone available to work on fixing mono's code generation, or would mono need to be dropped from arm for etch? No objections. AFAICT, the popularity of Debian/ARM is due to the recent crop of IXP42x's. The oldest hardware that I have is ARM720, which is also v4. OTOH, we've carried 386 for a long time and there are so few of those around anymore. I'd prefer not worrying about the v3 machines, but our policy tends to be inclusive. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#394759: [Pkg-openssl-devel] Bug#394759: please ship the des binary
On Sun, Oct 22, 2006 at 10:17:59PM +0100, Martin Michlmayr wrote: Package: openssl Version: 0.9.8c-3 Severity: wishlist The openssl source code includes the file crypto/des/des.c. Do you think you could include the binary from this file in the openssl package? I'd need this binary to encrypt something for debian-installer so the firmware of a specific device will accept it and apparently I cannot do this with the openssl binary itself. So, there are a few changed between the way that old des binary works, and the new: - padding is different. - Converting the key to the real key and IV happens with a different algorithm. You need to use DES_string_to_key() to convert the key and set iv to 0. - It doesn't use a salt, so you need the -nosalt option. I've attached a patch that works for me for the padding problem, but I'm not really sure if upstream is going to accept the patch as is. For both encryption and decryption you need to use the -padolddes option, you shouldn't use the -nopad option. For the second problem it would be nice if there was an option in openssl to convert the string using DES_string_to_key(), but I guess this is easier to work around. I didn't realize that the same archive would be used for stable and unstable for the same upstream version. I see now that packages.d.o finds the orig.tar.gz for stable correctly, but it's being served off security.debian.org rather ftp-master.debian.org. Bug#396064: Please make tip22 run on arches other than mips
Am Sun, 29. Oct 2006, 16:45:53 +0100 schrieb Jö Fahlke: It would be nice for tip22 to be able to run on arches other than mips, to make cross-development easier. Some more thoughts on this. There are basicly two ways: A) Make the package Architecture: all. B) Do it like binutils, have a debian/rules binary-cross target where people needing this can build their cross-devel packages themselves. I can see these potential problems with each aproach: A) * The package needs to Depends: binutils [mips] | binutils-mips-linux-gnu. However, policy seems to allow architectures only in Build-Depends. * I don't know how the build deamons cope with a package which is Architecture: all but must be build on mips. A cross toolchain is most probably not available on the build deamon. This is probably not a big problem, since the maintainer is always supposed to upload binaries AFAIK, so the build deamons will never have to deal with arcboot and tip22. Arcboot has to be built natively anyway, so the build will always happen on mips. B) * It is less convenient for the user ;) I'd like to hack a little bit on it, but before I invest time I'd like to hear the maintainers opinion, especially whether there are any other potential problems. Bug#276833: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the webfs package
Dear maintainer of webfs and Debian translators, On 28 oct 2006 I sent a notice to the maintainer of the webfs Debian package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation update in the BTS (bug #276833). I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization bug as well as all other pending translations. The package maintainer did not respond in a week so I will proceed with the NMU. Indeed, Iñaki Rodriguez who wants to take the package over, has agreed to let me do the upload and then take the package over, after the upload. The package fixes a RC issues so I give you only TWO DAYS to update translations. The package is currently translated to: cs de fr pt vi The following translations are incomplete: de pt (even after applying pending l10n bugs, of course) If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get a copy of this announcement BCCd to you. Please review the translation. Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations for this package. Once completed, please send them directly to me so I can incorporate them into the package being built. The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is 05 nov 2006. If you are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS. You can download the pot, and any po, files from: http://people.debian.org/~lwall/i18n/pots/webfs If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU and send him/her all updates I receive. Otherwise the following will happen (or already has): 28 oct 2006 : send the first intent to NMU notice to the package maintainer. 29 oct 2006 : post a NMU announcement to debian-i18n with you (maintainer) CC'ed 01 nov 2006 : deadline for receiving translation updates 01 nov 2006 : build the package and upload it to DELAYED/2-day send the NMU patch to the BTS 01 nov 2006 : NMU uploaded to incoming 02 nov 2006 : NMU enters unstable Thanks for your efforts and time. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#395952: documentation
On 28 Oct 2006, at 10:59 pm, Ulrich Eckhardt wrote: Package: am-utils Version: 6.1.5-2 Severity: wishlist Greetings! I'm currently looking for something that mounts CDs automatically and came across the am-utils package. I believe it can mount CDs or floppies, but I'm not sure. It can, yes. You can use it to automount pretty much any kind of filesystem, although I personally have never used it for mounting local devices. I've certainly made sure I build the Debian package with support for physical devices. That is also my criticism: In the package description, it should mention that it both manages network filesystems and local filesystems like CDs and floppies, unless it can't, which I'm still not sure about. Further, the fact that I still can't say if it really does that is somehow striking, how can it be that this is hidden so deeply in the documentation? I think it's probably just a by-product of what 99.9% of people use it for. Now, assuming it can mount CDs, I'd also expect that to be a primary use for it and it should be documented as one typical example (e.g. in section 11 of the included HTML docs or as an example setup script). We've tried using it mount USB drives at work, and actually it doesn't do a very good job of it. It works fine automounting local filesystems which you expect to remain mounted forever once you've mounted them (so I'd have no problems with using amd to automount local fixed disks) but when we tried using it for USB drives we came across a snag, and that is the automatic unmounting. For local removable media, you want the unmounting to happen quite quickly after you stop using the device, but typically with NFS filesystems you want them to hang around for a while (especially in large installations). Unfortunately, there's no way to specify separate unmount intervals for different mount types, so it just didn't work for us, and I suspect this problem would also bite other users. In the case it can't mount CDs, I'd at least mention that it is designed to mount network filesystems and perhaps even suggest a different tool for CD/floppies. Such as the stuff that Gnome and KDE come with? I'll have a think about your suggestion and see what I can come up with. Bug#263169: letter from Russia
Dear Friend, Please excuse me for inconvience cause by this message. My name is Valentin. I'm student and I live with my mother in city Kaluga, Russia, located 200km from Moscow. My mother is invalid. She cannot see and she receive pension from government very rare which is not enought even for medications. I work very hard every day to be able to buy the necessities for my mother, but my salary is very small, because my studies still not finished. Due to the deep crisis in our country, the authorities stoped gas in our district and now we cannot heat our home. I don't know what to do, because the winter is coming and the weather will be very cold. I am very afraid that the temperature inside our home will be very cold and we will not be able to survive. Therefore I collected several e-mail addresses and thanks to the free internet access at our local library I decided to appeal to you with prayer in my heart for small help. If you have any old sleeping bag, portable stove, electric heater, warm clothes, electric water-boiler, canned and dried food, vitamins, medicines from cold, any hygiene-products, I will be very grateful to you if you could send it to our postal address which is: Valentin Mikhayline, Rileewa Uliza, 6-45. Kaluga. 248030, Russia. If you think that it would be better or easier for you to help with some money, please write me back and I will provide you with details how to send it safely, if you agree. This way to help is very good, because in this case I will be able to buy a portable stove and heat our home during the winter. I hope to hear from you very soon and I pray that you can help us. I also hope very much that this hard situation will become better in our country very soon. From all my heart, I wish you all the best. I wish that all your dreams come true and your life will be full of hapiness. God Bless You, Valentin and my mother Elena, Kaluga. Russia. -- No virus found in this incoming message. Bug#396071: segfaults when attempting to take a screenshot while wget is running
Frans Pop wrote: reassign 396071 cdebconf-gtk-udeb thanks On Sunday 29 October 2006 17:23, Robert Millan wrote: If you hit the Screenshot button while wget is fetching [1] your mirror's Release file, d-i will segfault. Inmediately after that, you see [2], and after a console switch, the d-i logs [3]. Known issue and the reason why the screenshot button is disabled when a progress bar is running. Apparently we are disabling the screenshot button too late here. Reassigning to cdebconf-gtk-udeb as that is what causes the crash, and it would be good to investigate the actual cause of the crash and seeing if we can solve that. Disabling the button was only a workaround. Note that in the mean time we may need to fix this in choose-mirror after all by displaying a progress bar at this point. Accessing the GdkWindow by a thread while the window is being updated by another thread in the gtk_main_loop() causes crashes, and this is the reason why i made the screenshot button disappear during a progress_xxx() call, in fact past experiments aimed at gaining exclusive access to the gdkwidow led to deadlocks between threads. Robert, did you press the button before the progressbar was displayed or were you able to press it while the progressbar was running? In a similar BR (#389088), Cristoph Haas wrote I just tried it again and it seems to have been a timing issue. After pressing the Next button the Screenshot button is still available for about a second. If I click on the Screenshot button very quickly then the installer (component) segfault. Before the actual partitioning happens the Screenshot button gets deactivated. So I think we can blame it on the timing Since these two bugs are very similar, i'm going to merge them; tomorrow i'll look for a fix for this bug. cheers Attilio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Gregor PS: Ripping with -g instead of -d works fine. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
