Bug#424877: texmacs: running Octave hangs texmacs

To display the matrix, you can enter a+0 This works with texmacs 1.0.6, octave 2.1.73 but not with octave 2.9.9. Thanks for your advice and/but, unfortunately, even with texmacs 1.0.6.10 we see a warning when used with Octave 2.1. Mmm going to http://snap.com doesn't crash here. Usually, the BadAlloc errors show up when the X server can't allocate a bitmap large enough compared to what libxul asked. Emphasis on install in the original message. Attempts to install the samba-common package while /tmp is mounted noexec fail. Given that remounting /tmp with exec allows the package to be successfully installed is pretty solid evidence that during installation some script is being directly executed out of /tmp. Steve is not saying that you're imagining things. What he's saying is that it is possible that the script that is being directly executed out of /tmp is being executed by some subsystem that Samba depends on, in which case it wouldn't be a bug in the Samba package. Bug#425355: dpt_i2o - disk IO causes very high load
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-k7 Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2 Doing any disk IO ( 10MB/s) causes the load on the system to rise into extreme areas. This is bugging me, especially since the disks (4) are on a separate RAID controller (Adaptec 2400A, module dpt_i2o). For example: If I copy a big file via NFS onto the machine, the load rises easily up to 8 (8 threads configured for nfsd). Copying the same file via scp, the load gets still up to 5, so it doesn't look like it is related to NFS. When I check with top what is causing this high load, I can see that the system is spending all the time in iowaits. I had this problem also with older kernels. I guess it was just not that worse, because I just recently upgraded the NIC from 100MBit to 1GBit, causing extra stress for the disks. Bug#425093: fix available via other package upgrades to SVN

(I know we've only just got through one transition but I'm confident that this one is painless.) We're *not* through the current transitions yet, a lot of my GPE packages are out of sync between unstable and testing still. OK. Testing is a different issue - there are a lot of transitions going on that affect Gtk-based programs which will all delay migration into testing. atk1.0, glibc, libcairo, glib2.0, gtk+2.0, pango1.0 and libxrandr need to move into testing first. Only gpe-contacts would need to be rebuilt apart from the affected libraries. Secondly, as I said before, I don't see it as good to pre-empt upstream on this. I agree - but this is an RC bug (that we saw coming) so I think it does warrant at least an attempt to fix. There isn't going to be a patch to fix this bug, it needs the transition of libeventdb and libgpevtype. Would you like me to make my SVN-derived tarballs, .deb packages and .dsc files available? (I have an apt repository on my server.) Florian appears to be saying he *will* make a release with the GPL version, but I'd still rather wait for upstream to move. Personally, I'm not confident that a release is imminent - Florian hasn't said (AFAICT) that a release is to be made any time soon. Last I heard was that he will not accept the licence change. Even ignoring community relationships, if you make up a release and then upstream do something different it would be rather messy to get back from the fork. I know a fork is possible here but the SVN code that I'm using is from the existing GPE SVN repository, so it's not a fork - yet. I haven't used an SVN r number suffix at the moment but I can quite easily make these packages as 0.73rc2+0.90svn etc. That will be easily replaced by 0.90 when it (eventually) gets released. There have been a lot of issues with GPE recently with the move from handhelds.org. I've got the updated packages installed locally and gpe-calendar is a *transformed* application with the new code in libeventdb. Memory usage is radically reduced, responsiveness is back to a reasonable level and even large imports take a reasonable length of time. The current version of gpe-calendar in unstable is a dinosaur by comparison. Users (especially embedded users) need gpe-calendar 0.90 ASAP. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ pgp67oWtHPn4f.pgp Description: PGP signature

It is much easier to build than previous versions (0.3.x) and generates PDF files from simple DocBook sources with docbook-xsl. Bug#425367: grub-update freeze system on xfs root
Package: grub Version: 0.97-27 Severity: grave I prefer use xfs as root file system. grub-install always freeze total system on linux installation or grub update. Manual installation grub always fine. I tried investigate script. Heh, mates, there are not logic at all. # XFS needs special magic xfs_frozen=false if which xfs_freeze /dev/null ; then cat EOF Due to a bug in xfs_freeze, the following command might produce a segmentation fault when ${grubdir} is not in an XFS filesystem. This error is harmless and can be ignored. EOF if xfs_freeze -f ${grubdir} ; then xfs_frozen=true ; fi fi I can't undestand, why do you need freeze total filesystem? Do you plan write t o stage1,2 or change it location in the same time? Even in this case your freeze will not well, because location of files will be changed later and grub-install will be had to rerun. If you want prevent writing in this files better use linux lock on files, rather then freeze total filesytem. No matter, this freeze is not needed at all. Later you run: $grub_shell --batch $no_floppy --device-map=$device_map EOF $log_file And you try to write to file in the same filesystem. Bingo, script is locked. And after killing script whole filesystem remain be freezed. You will not be able even to login in linux with such root filesystem. Even soft reboot will not work. Only hard reset button will help. And very strange method to detect, when filesystem must be freezed. There may be situations when filesystem is xfs, but have not xfs utils or there are xfs utils but filesystem is not xfs. I insist, all code about xfs filesystem is wrong, unnessesary and must be removed. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#425308: bug downgrade
Leonardo Boselli [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Change the subject of my reported bug to does not run as root and severity to normal Anyway in the README.debian is written that the user running the program must be member of dialout group. By default only root is a virtual menber of that group. Please add an option to run as root. (two years ago used to work). Thanks for your report. As it is written in the user manual that is part of the distribution, under Installation, in Unix/Linux systems access to the serial or USB port is normally restricted to users in a group (in Debian, the dialout group). This means that the system administrator should add users to this group if they are to have access to that port, not that the application should be run as root. We decided to not allow root to run the application because of security reasons: a simple attack can be done by creating a file in /root/.gpsman-dir/patch.tcl to gain access or destroy data with root privileges. In case one wants to run the risk, this restriction can be made void as follows: - edit the file /usr/lib/gpsman/main.tcl - find the line if { $UNIX $env(user) == root } { and replace it by if { 0 } { I would appreciate that you contact me directly when you have problems with gpsman. I will be glad to help. By the way, I hope that a new release, 6.3.2, will be available within some weeks. It solves some bugs present in 6.3.1. I will notify you when it is ready. The presence of the libnss-mdns package causes the distributed.net client to fail with a floating point exception when it tries to perform a name look up. According to strace (output attached) the error occurs around the time that the distributed.net client accesses /lib/libnss_mdns4_minimal.so.2. Removing the libnss-mdns package allows distributed.net to function normally. I can reproduce this error at will. I have tested the i386 version of the distributed.net client on the same machine and it runs without problems so this bug seems to be architecture dependant. I am including the output of distributed.net and the error reported by the kernel in addition to the afore mentioned strace output. I spent some time tracking this down. According to the strace it crashes around the time it would normally call into the mdns nss lib. Adding some debug info to nss-mdns showed that it never actually gets to that point though. At this point i'm out of options, the distributed-net package contains no source code and it's a static binary. So i can't debug this further (without spending absurd amounts of time). Reassigning this to distributed-net as it seems to work fine with all other applications. Sjoerd -- Dying is a very dull, dreary affair. The problem with --enable-optimization-by-cpu is that the optimisation is performed at COMPILE time, so it will be relative to the machine you compile on, and may not fit on other machines. Ciao, Free Could this bug please be un-marked as fixed? It is *NOT* fixed in jackd 0.103.0-4 or 0.103.0-5. I can rebuild from source to get a working jackd for Pentium II but I thought that x86 Debian binaries should work for 486 and above sub-architectures unless flagged as CPU-specific. Bug#425257: root-system_5.15.07-4(hppa/experimental): FTBFS: architecture not supported
Hi Frank, On Sun, 2007-05-20 at 15:50 +0200, Frank Lichtenheld wrote: Package: root-system Version: 5.15.07-4 Severity: important Hi, your package failed to build from source. According to configure, Linux on HPPA doesn't seem to be supported. You should either add that support or list only the supported architectures in debian/control and not use any. OK. Let me ask some questions - maybe we can get it to work. So hppa is the Debian name for HP PA-RISC. Reading a bit about this architecture on Wikipedia, I get the felling that it's what HP-UX ran on. HP-UX _is_ supported by ROOT, but Linux on HP PA-RISC isn't (yet). So my questions: * Does the 64bit version of HP PA-RISC work in a 32bit compatibility mode? That is, how come there's no Debian architectures hppa32 and hppa64? This has implications for what `close architecture' to implement support from. * Is the HP PA-RISC a little endian or big endian machine? * Is there any common pit-falls with this architecture? * If it's not possible to get ROOT working on this platform, would there be a way to exclude that architecture when building packages? I'd rather make exceptions to `all' then provide a positive list (which is harder to maintain). Kevin, you have any idea how to proceed on this? Fons, I send you this report too, so you can say what you think. We can probably expect more of these kind of errors, since ROOT hasn't been tested on all `exotic' Linux platforms. Frank, thank you for the report. Oh, and another question, I looked at the amd64 build logs (I know this is slightly off topic, but anyways), and towards the end it said g++ -O2 -pipe -Wall -m64 -fPIC -Iinclude -DR__HAVE_CONFIG -pthread -I/usr/include/mysql -DUSEPCH -include precompile.h -o mysql/src/TMySQLServer.o -c mysql/src/TMySQLServer.cxx In file included from mysql/src/TMySQLServer.cxx:23: /usr/include/mysql/my_global.h:353:24: error: asm/atomic.h: No such file or directory make[1]: *** [mysql/src/TMySQLServer.o] Error 1 rm utils/src/rootcint_tmp.cxx utils/src/RStl_tmp.cxx make[1]: Leaving directory `/build/buildd/root-system-5.15.07' make: *** [build-arch-stamp] Error 2 For some reason, the MySQL header includes `asm/atomic.h' which for some reason isn't available. I realise that this is a problem with MySQL on that platform, but what to do about it? The file should be in the `linux-kernel-headers' package, which I assume is installed on the amd64 machine. What I don't get, is why this header is included. The relevant code is #ifdef HAVE_ATOMIC_ADD #define new my_arg_new #define need_to_restore_new 1 C_MODE_START #include asm/atomic.h C_MODE_END #ifdef need_to_restore_new /* probably safer than #ifdef new */ #undef new #undef need_to_restore_new #endif #endif The symbol HAVE_ATOMIC_ADD is not defined by ROOT itself, so it must come from MySQL. I'm surprised that this didn't work. In the past we've build the packages on amd64 with no problems. I see ia64 fails because gfortran is not available, and g77 should be used instead. I guess a Build-Depends like gfortran [!ia64] | g77 [ia64] | fortran-compiler would do the trick? I should also exclude root-plugin-hbook on kfreebsd-amd64. The kfreebsd-i386 architecture never really got support upstream. It is unfortunate, because it should be close to the BSD architectures that is support. mips and mipsel have the same problem as hppa. Oh, and one last comment. How come, if I do a search on http://experimental.ftbfs.de/build.php for root-system and architecture any, I get nothing? | Automatic build of root-system_5.15.07-4 on meitner by sbuild/hppa 98-farm | Build started at 20070520-1519 | ** | Checking available source versions... | Fetching source files... | Reading package lists... | Building dependency tree... | Need to get 20.5MB of source archives. | Get:1 http://ftp.de.debian.org experimental/main root-system 5.15.07-4 (dsc) [2327B] | Get:2 http://ftp.de.debian.org experimental/main root-system 5.15.07-4 (tar) [20.5MB] | Get:3 http://ftp.de.debian.org experimental/main root-system 5.15.07-4 (diff) [57.1kB] | Fetched 20.5MB in 1m23s (245kB/s) | Download complete and in download only mode | ** Using build dependencies supplied by package: | Build-Depends: debhelper (= 5.0.37.2), po-debconf, libssl-dev, comerr-dev, libxpm-dev, libfreetype6-dev, libpcre3-dev, zlib1g-dev | libz-dev, python-dev (= 2.1), libjpeg62-dev, libpng12-dev, libtiff4-dev, libungif4-dev, libxinerama-dev, libpacklib1-dev [!kfreebsd-i386], gfortran | fortran-compiler, libxmlrpc-c3-dev | libxmlrpc-c-dev, fftw3-dev, libkrb5-dev | heimdal-dev, krb5-user |

Bug#423022: Bug#422851: grub-probe -t partmap doesn't work with software RAID
At Sat, 19 May 2007 15:13:58 +0100, Sam Morris wrote: In addition, it would be nice if the 'out of disk' error could be deferred until grub actually tries to read a block that is out of range, as grub-legacy does The problem is that it actually tries to do that, because the RAID superblock is located at the end of the partition. (even through it doesn't 'see' the RAID partition as such, I can still boot from it without complaint). That's probably because you have RAID1. The only difference between a RAID and a non-RAID is that there is a RAID superblock at the end, you can just mount a RAID1 partition as normal. This is how grub legacy was always able to boot from RAID1 partitions. This won't work with RAID0 or RAID5 however. I wonder if d-i warns the user that they may be creating an unbootable system if the partition that contains /boot does not exist wholly within the first 7.8 GiB/128 GiB/128 PiB (depending on the addressing mode in use) of the disk? :) I think that 7.8GiB limit has been gone for a long time now, I don't think there will be a lot of installations on such machines. My guess is that the 128 GiB limit is still a problem. Jeroen Dekkers -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#425386: xmms2: Last.fm plugin just plays noise
Package: xmms2 Version: 0.2DrHouse-3.1 Severity: normal I've tried using the lastfm plugin together with jack output. Playing a local file via jack output works, but streaming via jack will result in just quirky noises. It may be that the sampling rates or audio formats are not adapted properly: Example stream: lastfm://globaltags/rock Note that I also have to set the volume manually via xmms2 volume port1 100 xmms2 volume port0 100 every time I want to use the jack plugin. lastfm streaming works with the alsa output plugin And the xmms2d output from xmms2d -v -o jack, in case you need it: --- INFO: src/xmms/log.c:35: Initialized logging system :) INFO: src/xmms/ipc.c:868: IPC listening on 'unix:///tmp/xmms-ipc-friedel'. Bug#425387: laptop-mode-tools: nice load will only be set for ondemand governor
Package: laptop-mode-tools Version: 1.33-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi, in /usr/sbin/laptop_mode instead of a variable a fixed value is used so the behavior is not what it should be, at least for those who don't use the ondemand governor.
