Bug#437838: cyrus-imapd-2.3: Daemons/tools die due to Berkeley DB version mismatch
Gabor Gombas píše v Út 21. 08. 2007 v 12:26 +0200: On Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 08:07:39PM +0200, Ondřej Surý wrote: Correct fix would be to find why it didn't find libdb4.4. The reason is in the comment of the proposed patch. Every libdbX.Y Debian package installs the library as /usr/lib/libdb-X.Y.so, because that's the SONAME of the Berkeley DB 4.x libraries. The libdbX.Y-dev package however installs the /usr/lib/libdb.so symlink that points to the DB version the -dev package belongs to. That means you _can_ link to any BDB version if you use an explicit DB name (like the Cyrus configure script does) even when the -dev package is not present or if the -dev package belongs to a different library version. So, if you happen to have _any_ libdbX.Y package installed that has a version higher than the -dev package (example: you have all libdb4.4, libdb4.4-dev, and libdb4.5 installed) then the Cyrus configuration snippet will find the highest library version (4.5 in this case, since the linker will find the /usr/lib/libdb-4.5.so library), and not the version of the -dev package. And that will cause the version mismatch. The reason why this problem do not occur with other packages is that almost every other library (including the 3.x series of BDB) uses a SONAME of the form libfoo.so.X.Y.Z, i.e. the SONAME does not end in .so. I was thinking about this issue while walking to work and you are not right. If everything is ok with macro you patched, imapd is linked against libdb-X.Y.so. Only problem could be if compiler is called with -ldb instead of -ldb-X.Y, which points back to my original thought, that something went wrong in first block in m4 macro, which tests against specific version of bdb and it used fallback macro which links just to -ldb. What does 'ldd /usr/lib/cyrus/bin/imapd' says on broken binary? And 'apt-cache policy cyrus-imapd-2.3' ? Bug#439189: update-manager: Horrible death if run outside of an X environment
Package: update-manager Version: 0.42.2ubuntu22-15 Priority: wishlist If I start update-manager from the CLI of a non-X terminal (no $DISPLAY) it dies with a 'Segment violation' and produces in STDERR the attached errors. Bug#432410: util-vserver: Please upload the package

Can you say more about this? Not much more than: http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2007/07/msg00064.html Good library show two lines like this: $ objdump -p /lib/libc.so.6 |grep HASH HASH0x13e088 GNU_HASH0x194 And bad ones only show the GNU_HASH one. util-vserver is affected on amd64, alpha, ia64, powerpc, s390 and sparc. Bug#433064: wine: upstream version 0.9.43 available
retitle 433064 wine: upstream version 0.9.43 available severity 433064 wishlist thanks Since 0.9.41 has entered sid, there's no scim conflict currently, so knock down severity to wishlist, and retitle for new upstream version. if you skip releases, the damage is greater if it does happen. If you don't, users always have something to fall back on. Sounds reasonable. Bug#387703: piklab debian package
Hello, Today, I wanted to update my experimental piklab debian package¹. However, in the latest tar.bz2, I see that there is now a debian-directory. Here I can see that Stefan von Halenbach has worked on creating a debian package for piklab. This is great news, because I don't consider myself the best person for this job (I'm not a KDE-user, but find piklab-prog very interesting). To avoid duplicate work, can you explain to bugreport 387703¹ what the plans are about debian and piklab. If Stefan wants to maintain piklab for Debian, then the RFP (Request For Packaging) can be renamed to ITP (Intend To Package). Bug#387703: piklab debian package
I'm not completely sure what is the status of the debian packager for piklab. Stefan used to do it. Then Tom Schouten volonteered to do it and he made updated packages for piklab 0.14.2 Since then there are no new debian packages for the newer version of piklab. I am not sure if they are too busy or if they dropped the ball (or if I should tell them when I make a new release ?). I am sending copies of this email to them so they can answer these questions. Also note that Stefan and Tom are both rookies at making debian packages. It would probably be best if some more knowledgeable person could at least help them. Bug#393746: Letting alias be an option might be better
Hi, Let's take Helvetica for example. Although Arial looks like Helvetica, they are not the same fonts in design; the differences in interface are somewhat noticeable given that the users have been familiar with original Helvetica font. Compared with Arial, however, Nimbus Sans L font, provided by gsfonts/gsfonts-x11 package, is the real clone of Helvetica. Using a different name is just a trademark issue. Therefore, I don't think it is a good idea to treat Arial as a replacement of Helvetica interface given that Nimbus Sans L already exists. Well, Arial et al fonts are designed as replacements in design, but this is just a company decision of Microsoft. And in order to get rid of trademark issues, these fonts do be designed with similar but different interfaces. Why should we follow such a not-so-wise decision? p.s., for the reference of defoma aliasing functionality, I'm not familiar too. I'm sorry for that. On 8/22/07, Thijs Kinkhorst [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Tuesday 21 August 2007 05:27, Hongzheng Wang wrote: Hi all, Although Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New are designed to be replacements for famous Times, Helvetica, and Courier, they are not the same fonts. After all, the differences are obviouse if the users are familiar with original Times, Helvetica, and Courier. In addition, gsfonts package has provided aliases, which are design-compatible with original ones and are good enough in many cases. So, I think msttcorefonts package had better provide a user decided option (prompt in configuration) for adding aliases. And, setting the priority to be as same as that in gsfonts might not be good because it will confuse users. I'm not eager to add a configuration question - any such question further complicates and lengthens Debian's installation processes, so there should be good cause. In this case, since the fonts were designed to be drop in replacements of the original Times, Helvetica and Courier I do not see the problem with adding the Aliases. Could you let me know which concrete problem you're facing? I may consider lowering the priority - but I haven't found a reference for priorities yet. Do you have an indication of the scale of these priorities? Thijs -- Hongzheng -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#439200: update-manager: missing man page
Package: update-manager Version: 0.42.2ubuntu22-11 Severity: normal update-manager (and -notifier) don't have a man page. This is especially annoying as those programs cannot be started as 'ordinary user' from the command line, but rather have to be started as 'gksu update-manager', which is not obvious for first-time users. The man page should also tell how to access the settings. Especially to kde users it is not obvious, that update-manager's settings are changed by running a seperate program called 'Software Properties' from the kde -- settings menue. It might be helpful, if the man page would also describe how to acces the program from the menu. In kde it is kde - Settings - Update Manager. Bug#439203: Doesn't give any explanations of the severities and what they mean
Package: reportbug-ng Version: 0.2007.08.20 Severity: serious --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Too many users files bugs with a wrong severity because there is no explanation when choosing severity in reportbug-ng. Another bug reporting tool does this quite nicely like this: 1 criticalmakes unrelated software on the system (or the whole system) break, or causes serious data loss, or introduces a security hole on systems where you install the package. 2 grave makes the package in question unusable by most or all users, or causes data loss, or introduces a security hole allowing access to the accounts of users who use the package. 3 serious is a severe violation of Debian policy (that is, the problem is a violation of a 'must' or 'required' directive); may or may not affect the usability of the package. Note that non-severe policy violations may be 'normal,' 'minor,' or 'wishlist' bugs. (Package maintainers may also designate other bugs as 'serious' and thus release-critical; however, end users should not do so.) 4 important a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a package, without rendering it completely unusable to everyone. 5 does-not-build a bug that stops the package from being built from source. (This is a 'virtual severity'.) 6 normal a bug that does not undermine the usability of the whole package; for example, a problem with a particular option or menu item. 7 minor things like spelling mistakes and other minor cosmetic errors that do not affect the core functionality of the package. 8 wishlistsuggestions and requests for new features. That other tool do also require a detailed justification for choosing a justification for the report. For example, if I choose 2 grave, I need to answer one more question: You are reporting a grave bug; which of the following criteria does it meet? 1 renders package unusable renders the package unusable, or mostly so, on all or nearly all possible systems on which it could be installed (i.e., not a hardware-specific bug); or renders package uninstallable or unremovable without special effort 2 causes non-serious data loss causes the loss of data on the system that is unimportant, or restorable without resorting to backup media 3 user security holeintroduces a security hole allowing access to user accounts or data not normally accessible 4 unknown not sure, or none of the above - and if unknown is chosen, the severity is automatically downgraded to normal. Reportbug-ng makes it too easy to file bug reprots with a escalated - or wrong - severity. I might have filed this bug reprot with a wrong severity, but I forgot what the severities meant. /Sune --- System information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed =-+-=== python| 2.4.4-6 python-central (= 0.5.8) | 0.5.14 python-qt3| 3.17.3-2 python-soappy | 0.11.3-1.8 xdg-utils | 1.0.1-2 -- Do you know how may I ping a 3X mailer? Bug#439204: Playlist gets a little mixed up - Songs are shown at wrong places
Package: rhythmbox Version: 0.10.1-1+b1 Severity: minor --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I guess this is some kind of corner case. Symptom: Songs appears at wrong places Scenario: I use a automatic, filtered playlist with the following restrictions: * Rating = 4 * Genre does not contain XMAS * Length = 15:00 The List is sorted descending by last-played. Play is set to 'random-by-age'. Lucas Nussbaum wrote: Package: wireshark Version: 0.99.6pre1-1 Severity: important Hi, I cannot open any capture file from inside wireshark using the File - Open ... dialog. The 'Open' button stays greyd out. If I save a capture to a filename, then, I can open that filename using File - 'Open recent'. So the problem is not with opening files, but more with the Open dialog. I don't experience such a problem; the Open button turns sensitive when a capture file is selected. But I see there is a problem when the file name is entered in the Location text entry, the Open button doesn't get sensitive that way. Bug#439197: Build-depends libpri-dev version not specific enough
Martijn Grendelman wrote: Asterisk 1.4.11~dfsg-1 uses a patch named use-libpri-bristuffed, that makes the build process depend on a version of libpri-dev that supplies the file /usr/include/bristuffed/libpri.h. If this file is not present, the build fails. /usr/include/bristuffed/libpri.h is present in libpri-dev 1.4.1-1 and up, but not in 1.4.0-2 and before. Asterisk build-depends on libpri-dev (= 1.4). I think this should be changed to (= 1.4.1). You're absolutely right, thanks. Fixed in r4246, will appear in Debian in 1:1.4.11~dfsg-2. One more thing: even though the build-dep is updated, the binary asterisk package that is built, still gets a Depends: libpri1.0 (=1.4), so one can upgrade Asterisk without upgrading libpri. Many Perl packages, but also Perl itself and widespread things like sed, joe, cvs, dict... There are also countless packages that are under the GPL without mentioning the version at all (more than 2,000 but I was unable to get a precise number), they should therefore be considered version 1 or above. This is why I believe it wouldn't hurt to ship the GPL-1 with base-files, even if most people are going to use any later version. It can be found here: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-1.0.txt I delegate this decision to the policy group, as explained in base-files FAQ. As your proposal does not require a change in debian-policy, you would only need two seconds and no objections. However, my personal opinion is that the GPL v1 should be considered obsolete and we should deprecate it. The FSF would probably tell you that the GPLv1 has bugs which have been fixed in GPLv2 and GPLv3. We would be happier if we had less licenses to consider, not more. Bug#439223: mcelog: annotate-output for timestamping suggestion does not work
Package: mcelog Version: 0.8~pre-2 Severity: normal the README.Debian says: However, if you'd like to timestamp mcelog's output to get a very rough idea of the time the MCE was logged, you can (...) pipe mcelog's output through annotate-output This suggests to replace /usr/sbin/mcelog --ignorenodev --filter by /usr/sbin/mcelog --ignorenodev --filter | annotate-output in /etc/cron.d/mcelog. This will not work at all: 1) as of annotate-output v1.2, it will fill /var/log/mcelog with started / ended at entries every 5 minutes. 2) It will actually discard the mcelog output, as this example shows: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo foo | annotate-output 13:54:40 I: Started 13:54:40 I: Finished with exitcode 0 What I do now is use logger -t mcelog instead of annotate-output. This has the side effect of sending the output to syslog instead of /var/log/mcelog, though. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (200, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-amd64+deb-3 Locale: LANG=fr_LU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_LU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages mcelog depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.14 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.6.1-1GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii makedev 2.3.1-83 creates device files in /dev ii udev 0.114-2/dev/ and hotplug management daemo mcelog recommends no packages. -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#438459: libsmbios-dev dependency
Joachim Breitner schrieb: Hi Michael, Hi Joachim! I just came across this bug. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have a dependency on libsmbios-dev only on those platforms that have it (amd64, i386)? e.g.: Build-Depends: libsmbios-dev [i386 amd64] Hmm, isn't that exactly the way how we currently do it? We have a Build-Depends for i386 and amd64, and the configure script automatically switches the dell-backlight feature on, for those plattforms where libsmbios-dev is installed.
