Bug#445211: installation-report: Kernel panics every time I try to boot it.
Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED] ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Could you also check and send here the parameters used by grub to boot the system ? (you can see them at the boot menu by hitting 'e' on the default entry) I'm afraid I'm not using GRUB to boot the system. I'm using LILO. Hmmm, then you probably didn't run a default install, did you? Are you in a position to test the very same install with grub? In case you aren't, could you chez the lilo.conf file in the installed system (of course not being able to boot it will require tweaking such as booting from a Live CD such as Knoppix, or the Debian Installer CD in rescue mode). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#445340: gnome-panel: Hogs memory
On Fri, Oct 05, 2007 at 07:14:09AM +0200, Mike Hommey wrote: Package: gnome-panel Version: 2.20.0.1-1 Severity: important After a few hours running, here is what top displays: 7816 mh15 0 266m 167m 6788 S 0.7 22.1 4:25.10 gnome-panel There is obviously something leaking. I think i found the culprit. My battery is half dead, and the gnome-power-manager notification icon is set up to only show up when on battery. As it happens, the acpi information switches quite randomly between on battery an on AC, meaning the icon appears/disappears quite a lot, and following gnome-panel memory usage after a while seems to indicate the memory hogging doesn't happen when the icon is made still (always display it), though the icon itself changes (switches between the charging icon and the on AC icon). So, on first hand, there seems to be a leak when a notification icon disappears. Mike -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

They both use libvte which may be in cause. Gnome-terminal (currently 2.18.2-1 here) is still as quick as before when resizing the window. Hmhm, ok. I don't really see such behavior here. But maybe I didn't understand the test case. What should I do? Maximize a xfce4-terminal window, then switch to another desktop, then switch back? Then xfce4-terminal uses a lot of cpu? Bug#444338: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#444338: README.Debian.gz has outdated sections
That could be an opportunity to re-check that file and see whether there are some things we might want to add. I recommend the following additions: - There is a bug (https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4098) where by accounts created with 'net rpc user add' are disabled and need enabling. To work around this you can do this for each account you create: smbpasswd -e new username - Beware of 'invalid users = root' in smb.conf, which is enabled by default in Debian - Upgrading from Sarge to Etch: smb.conf's 'passwd chat' changed from '*Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n .' to '*Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* .' Since Samba 3.0.23 'net groupmap modify' now needs to be 'net groupmap add'; additionally the RID has to be specified, using the form 'rid=RID' From 3.0.23's release notes: Group Mapping Changes = The default mapping entries for groups such as Domain Admins are no longer created when using an smbpasswd file or a tdbsam passdb backend. This means that it is necessary to use 'net groupmap add' rather than 'net groupmap modify' to set these entries. This change has no effect on winbindd's IDmap functionality for domain groups. Where once you might have done this: net groupmap modify ntgroup=Domain Admins unixgroup=samba-domain-admins type=domain -U root net groupmap modify ntgroup=Domain Users unixgroup=samba-domain-users type=domain -U root net groupmap modify ntgroup=Domain Guests unixgroup=samba-domain-guests type=domain -U root You now have to do this: net groupmap add rid=512 ntgroup=Domain Admins unixgroup=samba-domain-admins type=domain -U root net groupmap add rid=513 ntgroup=Domain Users unixgroup=samba-domain-users type=domain -U root net groupmap add rid=514 ntgroup=Domain Guests unixgroup=samba-domain-guests type=domain -U root

Bug#444914: [Pkg-cryptsetup-devel] Bug#444914: temporary-cryptsetup-$$ files appear in /dev/mapper
On Mon, October 1, 2007 21:16, Dick Middleton wrote: Package: cryptsetup Version: 2:1.0.5-2 Severity: important I have a curious effect; sometimes I get an error with luksOpen such as this: Failed to setup dm-crypt key mapping. Check kernel for support for the aes-cbc-plain cipher spec and verify that /dev/mapper/vg02-devil contains at least 261 sectors. Failed to read from key storage Command failed: No key available with this passphrase. None of these problems exist - it's a perfectly valid luks partition so the cause remains a mystery for the moment however: On a subsequent attempt to luksOpen it will most likely succeed but there then remains a file /dev/mapper/temporary-cryptsetup-$$ where $$ is obviously a process number. This file can be removed with a luksClose. To reiterate, this file remains after a subsequent successful attempt not after the preceeding failure. This problem has only appeared on my system after upgrading the hardware from a k7 system to an amd64 system and changing to a Debian stock kernel (2.6.22-2-amd64) rather than a home brew (2.6.19) one. Ok, I've compared the two strace logs (they can be found in the bug report) and the error in the failure log seems to be at line 287 where some process has opened the temporary device that libdevmapper created (meaning libdevmapper can't remove it and errors out). I believe that you're seeing a race between libdevmapper and udev in the creation of the dm-* devices (and you probably see it now because you have a faster machine). The problem seems to be documented here (and the ubuntu patch to libdevmapper seems to contain some relevant code): https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UdevDeviceMapper So, I'm CC:ing the maintainers for libdevmapper and udev to ask their advice before I reassign this BR. -- David Härdeman -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#445275: gajim: Not installable with python 2.5
Le jeudi 04 octobre 2007 à 21:30 +0200, Yann Leboulanger a écrit : Gajim can work with python2.5 because pysqlite is included in python2.5. But there making a dep on python2.4 + python-pysqlite2 OR python2.5 doesn't work: it's not because you have python 2.5 installed that it's you'll use it to run Gajim, see bug #418252. It's why we now strictly depend on python2.4, I don't see how to improve things. In this case, you should depend on: python (= 2.4), python-pysqlite2 | python (= 2.5) and that should be enough for when the package is upgraded. In fact, when moved to version 2.5, python should start providing python-pysqlite2; currently the python maintainer hasn't added this field, but it should be fixed before the migration. Launch up an xfce4-terminal window and just resize it. It should be very slow compared to before. Then xfce4-terminal uses a lot of cpu? Did you check this in `top`? Is the load continuous or does it stops after the switch? Actually the one who’s taking all CPU cycles while resizing is X itself. Xfce4-terminal itself takes almost no CPU cycles at all. This makes me believe that this is related to X.org 7.3. Too bad I can’t downgrade to verify this. Regards, Mathias -- debian/rules signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

On Thu, Oct 04, 2007 at 11:47:33PM +0200, Kurt Roeckx wrote: Doing 2 rsync runs puts a higher load on the other server for no good reason. You can have a perfectly working mirror with just 1 rsync call. If you have --delay-updates, you have one large dependency on the speed of your disks while the final operation of moving updates in place completes. If you also do two stages of rsync, you only depend on the speed of replacement of each individual index file. All the replacements happen in dists/. I've actually had a version with 3 rsync's at some point, where the second one would only do dists. It's seems to take just as long to do that as the 1 or 3 rsync version, which is in the order of a few seconds. That's good, your I/O subsystem can handle the trawling each time, it's probably all in memory cache. There are still plenty of systems out there who don't have that luxury, and these usually also don't have too much free space to keep the temporary data in, so we still recommend stages to make sure. -- 2. Bug#423014: console's last three lines become inaccessible once xdm start up
Strange, I am not sure what to do with this bug then. Understandable. Will you have a chance to try the old CRT again? No - it's been junked (see below for why), that's why I replaced it. This might justify closing the bug as hardware fault. Are you sure the bug disappeared because you switched the display and not because of an upgrade at the same time? The bug persisted through an upgrade shortly before, which broke X support for the old CRT; and we (a sysadmin and I) were unable to work out what was the matter with it; but a replacement display workd fine, so we blamed the CRT. However, in investigating that, we were routinely using the console, which *was* missing its bottom three lines. So I don't believe the disappearance was due to the software upgrade. Bug#418774: dash gives Syntax error: Bad substitution on valid syntax
Since the expansion of '/' is not defined by POSIX, dash is certainly within its rights to abort rather than fail silently. As Micah points out, IF dash needed to expand the reference containing the / then you would certainly be correct. However, the reference is contained in a part of an if-statement which is never invoked: /bin/sh -c 'if false; then d=${foo/bar}; fi' Note the if false; The POSIX spec, in the sections we have quoted above, is clear that this should NOT be an error, because that reference is never expanded. Bug#445366: RFP: yauap -- simple gstreamer based audio player (with amarok integration over dbus)
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: yauap Version : 0.2.1 Upstream Author : Sascha Sommer * URL : http://www.nongnu.org/yauap/ * License : GNU LGPL Programming Lang: C Description : simple gstreamer based audio player Yauap is a simple commandline audio player based on the GStreamer multimedia framework. There is also a DBus interface that allows yauap to act as a backend for the Amarok audio player. Yauap is free software. Rationale: Amarok dropped it's gstreamer backend[1] a while ago. Novell announced out-of-the-box support for mp3 decoding[2] in Amarok and Banshee, which has previously been lacking because of unlicensed mp3 patents preventing distribution of such software. This brought my attention to the solution, yauap With yauap Amarok will be able to use the mp3 decoder plugin for gstreamer which Fluendo has properly received patent licenses for. This way other legally-questionable alternatives available in Debian can be avoided. Anyone packaging this should probably be familiar with Amarok and work closely with its maintainers. Bug#396510: wontfix
tag 396510 +wontfix This is the slogan of the mplayer development group; to me it signifies a constant tension toward excellence, as is well shown by the endless discussions in mplayer-dev-eng re: the code improvement and fine optimization. The motto of the Gnome web site is Gnome: The Free Software Desktop ; and again this is not factually true, but is expressing their goal of proposing the best desktop (according to their definition of best). So, I agree, that it is a bit emphatic, but that is the way it is, and I prefer to keep it this way. a. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#445367: Failing vol_id for some USB keys
Package: udev Version: 0.114-2 Because of this bug, udev does not create the /dev entries (sda and sda1) for my USB key (a Creative Muvo 128Mo). I solved it (see the end of the mail) for my configuration. But here is the description of what happen. I log in a console to see kernel messages and also run udev with log in 'debug' mode instead of 'err'. After the key has been plugged, the kernel send the usual messages about a new usb peripheral and report that it will be named sda and has one partition sda1. All udev stuff is working and the genuine entries are created in /dev (the entry by-path, by-label...) until it comes to run 'vol_id --export /dev/sda'. Here the kernel raise a problem of I/O access on block 256000 and the key is removed by the kernel because of I/O errors. Finally, udev being aware of this removal, delete the sda entry of /dev. I stopped udev (/etc/init.d/udev stop), unplugged my key and replug it. I create the nodes by hand ('mknod sda b 8 0' and 'mknod sda1 b 8 1') and was able to mount the sda1 partition and read it correctly. Then, I try to run '/lib/udev/vol_id --export /dev/sda' and it fails as in the udev scripts, making the kernel rejecting my key. By the way, it works perfectly on sda1. I looked in the /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent.rules and vol_id is called once at the end. I added then: KERNEL==sd*[!0-9], SYSFS{removable}==1, GOTO=persistent_storage_end just after the line: KERNEL==hd*[!0-9], SYSFS{removable}==1, GOTO=persistent_storage_end May I suggest to include this line in the official udev script if vol_id is indeed made for scanning partition only? So with the additional line, it works for me. But you may be interested in finding why vol_id makes the kernel reject my key. If so please send me instructions on what to do or what information you may need. I test it for different kernels (2.6.18 and 2.6.21) and the behaviour was the same, always related to vol_id from udev. The ECalendar conduit, which is responsible for the synchronisation of the calendar of your PDA with the calendar of Evolution, does not synchronise the categories. Bug#445363: nvidia-glx incompatible to xlibmesa-gl-dev
Package: nvidia-glx Version: 1.0.7174-3 Tags: patch When one has nvidia-glx installed and compiles programs which use libGL, compilation works but the resulting program often does not. Below an example program. The reason seems to be that when both xlibmesa-gl-dev and nvidia-glx are installed, then the symlink /usr/lib/libGL.so is broken. Replacing this link by a link to the correct libGL.so.xxx fixes the bug. (I think the package nvidia-glx should care about this.) Bug#444807: Etch installer does not detect my hard disks but Woody detected them
On Tue, Oct 02, 2007 at 05:37:05PM +0100, Chris Austin wrote: I have used every floppy version of the Etch installer I can find, starting with those at the link http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/installer-i386/current/images/floppy/ However I have only used the boot.img and root.img floppies, because the names of the other floppies, namely cd-drivers.img, net-drivers-1.img, and net-drivers-2.img, suggest they are only relevant for cd installs or net installs, which I am not using. So that's the problem. Even if the name is misleading, you will need at least one of this driver images to access your hard disks. Unfortunately, these floppies do not contain all the necessary components to run the installer through the end. You either need to get access to the other components and packages by read them from a CD or from the network. My plan is to boot from floppy, get a basic system working on the Linux drive, then download all .deb's I need to the Windows drive, because it is difficult to get dial-up Internet access in Linux. This is doable, but not really straightforward. I'd like to explore alternatives first: * Is your CD-ROM drive working? The netinst CD-ROM contains everything you need to get a minimal system running. The CD1 contains everything you need to get a basic desktop system working. * Does your machine have USB ports? You might try to use an hd-media installation then. IIRC, you can start an hd-media by using a floppy disk if your BIOS does not support booting of an USB stick. Cheers, -- Jérémy Bobbio.''`. Bug#445380: dpkg-dev: dpkg-source cannot handle diff with space in file name
Package: dpkg-dev Version: 1.13.25 Severity: important Tags: patch Problem Description === When trying to create a source package from an upstream tarball, where the debianization requires patching of files with names containing spaces, the resulting diff.gz will be incorrectly representing such files. This results in an unusable source package, because 'dpkg-source -x' uses the 'patch' command to apply the diff to the extracted orig.tar.gz. Because patch does not recognize the incorrectly contained filenames, it does not restore the correct files. Cause of the Problem To support file names with spaces, the 'diff' and 'patch' commands use a trailing tab character (\t) after the filenames. Dpkg-source uses a manual diff on all files, when creating the diff.gz. In doing doing this, it manually assigns labels to be used for the files inside the diff (using the -L option), this circumvents diff's own undocumented trailing tab-character behaviour, causing the above described problem. Solution of the Problem === The attached patch solves the problem, by appending a tab character (\t) to the labels that dpkg-source assigns using the -L option. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-2-386 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages dpkg-dev depends on: ii binutils 2.17-3 The GNU assembler, linker and bina ii cpio 2.6-17 GNU cpio -- a program to manage ar ii dpkg 1.13.25package maintenance system for Deb ii make 3.81-2 The GNU version of the make util ii patch 2.5.9-4Apply a diff file to an original ii perl [perl5] 5.8.8-7Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii perl-modules 5.8.8-7Core Perl modules Versions of packages dpkg-dev recommends: ii bzip21.0.3-6 high-quality block-sorting file co ii gcc [c-compiler] 4:4.1.1-15 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-2.95 [c-compiler]1:2.95.4-27 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.3 [c-compiler] 1:3.3.6-15 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-4.1 [c-compiler] 4.1.1-21The GNU C compiler -- no debconf information dpkg-source-1.13.25-fix-filenames-with-spaces.diff.gz Description: Binary data
Bug#445371: amarok-engines: please provide gstreamer based alternative.
Package: amarok-engines Severity: wishlist Hello! Amarok dropped it's gstreamer backend[1] a while ago. Novell announced out-of-the-box support for mp3 decoding[2] in Amarok and Banshee with OpenSuse 10.3, which has previously been lacking because of unlicensed mp3 patents preventing distribution of such software. This brought my attention to the solution, yauap With yauap Amarok will be able to use the mp3 decoder plugin for gstreamer which Fluendo has properly received patent licenses for. This way other legally-questionable alternatives available in Debian can be avoided. It would be great if (when yauap is packaged, see RFP bug #445366) amarok-engines provided this alternative, preferably as the default alternative if it's technically equivalent to the other backends.
