Bug#474339: dpkg crashes when the SE Linux file_contexts file doesn't match the loaded policy
On Sunday 06 April 2008 01:18, Manoj Srivastava [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: HI, I'm Ccing Manoj as he contributed the SELinux support in dpkg. Hopefully he'll be able to help on this bug. I will take a look at it, and see what I can do. However, this seems like an upstream bug in in a selinux library (libselinux1). That could be. But if it was a bug in libselinux1 then I would have expected it to occur somewhere else. Also note that the first thing I did was to rebuild dpkg with the latest packages in unstable, so it doesn't seem to be an issue of dpkg being built against an old libselinux1. I vaguely recall a double-free bug in libselinux that was fixed some time ago, but I don't think that's the case. Can you tell us what precise change you did ? So that we can reproduce it on our own machines if possible. Just edit the file: /etc/selinux/refpolicy-targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts and enter in a typo on one of the lines. NB Anything with an invalid type will do. A typo that confuses two different valid types won't trigger it. Russell has already informed selinux upstream of this issue; I'll be following the issue. I don't expect upstream to help much unless we reproduce the bug in Fedora or OpenSolaris. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Blog http://www.coker.com.au/sponsorship.html Sponsoring Free Software development -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#466570: linux-2.6: Issue is due alsa-firmware
Package: linux-2.6 Followup-For: Bug #466570 Hi, I've managed to get down to the issue and found out that this is related to the removal of alsa firmware from kernel on Debian, since 2.6.23. The reported issue is fixed by downloading the alsa-firmware package from alsa-project.org, compiling the source and installing it into /lib/firmware/yamaha You need first to create the yamaha dir, which might not be present, and to copy the .fw files. You'll also will be likely to want to install the package alsa-firmware-loaders. Maintainer can close this, as it seems an alsa bug. What would need more atention here is to prompt user and let she know that it's likely required to have the firmware files to get her hardware working. regards -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=es_PE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=es_PE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#474498: rsyslog: Collect syslog messages until /var/ is unmounted
Package: rsyslog Version: 2.0.4-1 Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: runtime-problem With the new feature of sendsigs to ignore some pids, it is now possible to let the syslog collector keep running for a bit longer during shutdown, and thus collect syslog messages related to umounting remote file systems etc. To allow this, the pid need to be stored in one of the files used by /etc/init.d/sendsigs to fetch pids to ignore. I suggest symlinking to the pid file, to make sure no pid is passed to sendsigs when no daemon is running. Here is a patch to do this. With this patch, the rsyslog script can be executed after sendsigs during shutdown. The change of dependencies make sure it will happen when dependency based boot sequencing is used. It might be an idea to change the sequence number used with manual sequencing too. --- debian/rsyslog.init.orig2008-04-06 09:46:22.0 +0200 +++ debian/rsyslog.init 2008-04-06 09:47:28.0 +0200 @@ -1,10 +1,8 @@ #! /bin/sh ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: syslog -# Required-Start:$remote_fs $time -# Required-Stop: $remote_fs $time -# Should-Start: $network -# Should-Stop: $network +# Required-Start:$local_fs $time +# Required-Stop: $local_fs $time # Default-Start: 2 3 4 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 6 # Short-Description: enhanced syslogd @@ -111,6 +109,8 @@ case $? in 2) log_end_msg 1 ;; esac + rm -f /lib/init/rw/sendsigs.omit.d/rsyslog + ln -s $RSYSLOGD_PIDFILE /lib/init/rw/sendsigs.omit.d/rsyslog log_progress_msg $RKLOGD do_start $RKLOGD_BIN $RKLOGD_OPTIONS $RKLOGD_PIDFILE @@ -118,6 +118,8 @@ 0|1) log_end_msg 0 ;; 2) log_end_msg 1 ;; esac + rm -f /lib/init/rw/sendsigs.omit.d/rklogd + ln -s $RKLOGD_PIDFILE /lib/init/rw/sendsigs.omit.d/rklogd ;; stop) log_daemon_msg Stopping $DESC $RKLOGD Happy hacking, -- Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Dear maintainer of openswan and Debian translators, On Friday, March 21, 2008 I sent a notice to the maintainer of the openswan Debian package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation update in the BTS (bug #461841). I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization bug as well as all other pending translations. The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in two weeks, so I will proceed with the NMU. The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail. The package is currently translated to: cs de es fi fr ja nl pt pt_BR sv vi Among these, the following translations are incomplete: cs es nl pt pt_BR sv vi If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get ANOTHER mail with the translation to update. Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report against the openswan package so I can incorporate them in the build. The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Wednesday, April 16, 2008. If you are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS. The POT file is attached to this mail. If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU and send him/her all updates I receive. Bug#474157: cron: fails to run jobs during DST time changes
I'm a bit confused about the state of DST handling; there was a patch applied in Debian revision -53, but the patch is large (and combined with other changes) so the (intended) effect of the changes aren't entirely clear to me. As I recall, that patch also seemed to have been applied in the ISC release. As I can see here's the openbsd patch included into debian version -53: http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/usr.sbin/cron/cron.c.diff?r1=1.3r2=1.4f=h Thanks; my current understanding is that the original patch worked when the time was manually changed by 1-3 hours, but didn't work for real DST changes (the details aren't clear to me). I guess you are right. The core change is in set_time routine which didn't detect DST change before because time() always returns seconds since epoch. Now they use localtime(), save tm_isdst flag and check it. When the flag changes -- here comes the DST change. BTW, I think there's a new bug here: http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/usr.sbin/cron/misc.c.diff?r1=1.8r2=1.11f=h We might use the following code to calculate GMT offset which seems cleaner to me than the original sendmail code they are using: int get_gmtoff(time_t *clock) { struct tm *ps; time_t tmp1, tmp2; ps = localtime(clock); tmp1 = mktime(ps); tmp2 = timegm(ps); return(tmp2 - tmp1); } Petya.

Bug#474498: rsyslog: Collect syslog messages until /var/ is unmounted
Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: Package: rsyslog Version: 2.0.4-1 Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: runtime-problem With the new feature of sendsigs to ignore some pids, it is now possible to let the syslog collector keep running for a bit longer during shutdown, and thus collect syslog messages related to umounting remote file systems etc. The change of dependencies make sure it will happen when dependency based boot sequencing is used. tags 474500 moreinfo unreproducible thanks On Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 10:36 AM, Peter Walser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Package: uptimed Version: 1:0.3.10-3 Severity: normal After more than 200 days running, the server power was shut off. No big problem. After booting /var/spool/uptimed/records was gone (or overwritten) and only the current boot is now visible. Is the file opened at start and closed on normal shutdown (whith start-stop-daemon)? No. The records file is only open when necessary. The daemon doesn't write directly to that file either. It writes to a temporary file and then moves it in place of the old records file. I don't see how that could lead to file corruption unless you've been unlucky enough to kill power exactly at the moment of the update... Which leads me to think that the default update interval of 60s is probably overkill and prone to that kind of situation... I suggest to open the file, write whatever and close immedately every time. Which is exactly what is done, afaik. Suggested cronjob workaround (not tested): @daily /etc/init.d/uptimed restart How's that suppose to help? Out of curiosity, what filesystem are you using on your system? In particular what file system is used on /var/spool/uptimed ? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That's not the same thing. The code behind this popup ensures all data has been properly synced to the usb drive before unmounting it. What's missing is a command to poweroff the usb port afterwards. Do you have any references about the correct way to safely remove USB devices on Linux? eject /dev/sd? used to work, but it doesn't anymore. echo 0 /sys/bus/usb/devices/???/power/state used to work too, but apparently it has been removed from recent kernels, and I don't know what's the new way of doing it. Bug#474498: rsyslog: Collect syslog messages until /var/ is unmounted
Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: [Michael Biebl] Isn't this problematic (at least for start), as rsyslogd is in /usr (because it uses libz)? Yes. You are right. For starting, it should depend on $remote_fs as long as it need a mounted /usr/. I did not think of that. But to make sure it can start before /usr/ is mounted and after it is umounted, I would recommend moving it to /(s)bin/. That would only be possible if libz was moved to /lib (which I can't decide). Also, there are plugins for rsyslog (like mysql or postgresql support), which definitely require a mounted /usr, and those libs will surely not be moved to /lib. Right now, those plugins are in separate packages, so the rsyslog core package (minus libz) could be installed to /sbin. Problem is, that the LSB header is static (definitely a limitation of this spec!). What would be required, is dynamic dependencies (i.e. if plugin-foo is installe $remote_fs is require, otherwise $local_fs). I don't see, how I can achieve what you want (given the plugin nature of rsyslog) within our current limited init system. Now, it prefers them equally, and specifies text/html before application/xhtml+xml, which leads to servers such as Apache serving text/html in preference to application/xhtml+xml. Bug#474498: rsyslog: Collect syslog messages until /var/ is unmounted
[Michael Biebl] Isn't this problematic (at least for start), as rsyslogd is in /usr (because it uses libz)? Yes. You are right. For starting, it should depend on $remote_fs as long as it need a mounted /usr/. I did not think of that. But to make sure it can start before /usr/ is mounted and after it is umounted, I would recommend moving it to /(s)bin/. Bug#474515: does not handle duplicate provides
[Peter Eisentraut] $ sudo update-bootsystem-insserv info: Checking if it is safe to convert to dependency based boot. error: Problems running insserv: insserv: script postgresql-8.2: service postgresql already provided! Yes, to avoid surprises, I decided to let the check done before enabling insserv refuse to convert if such settings are present. I am not sure if it is the correct thing to do, but thought it best to err on the safe side and stick with the existing boot sequence when such setting is found. Now if insserv doesn't handle that, we have a big problem, because it would make the dependency based boot system unusable for systems that have PostgreSQL installed and want to upgrade between major versions. I didn't find anything in the LSB specification that would disallow that. So I think insserv needs to be fixed. How do you believe insserv should behave when it encounter two packages with different dependencies and the same provides header? What dependency three should it build? I'm not sure, so I decided to reject such configurations until it was clear to me. The insserv program itself actually handle this (as in it generates some boot order), but I am not sure if it is the correct one (as I am not sure what would be the correct one). The code to reject such situations is only in the code to check if it is safe to activate insserv. If the insserv behaviour is OK, the check for this can be removed. Bug#474502: delo: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation update
Package: delo Version: N/A Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Please find attached the french debconf templates update, proofread by the debian-l10n-french mailing list contributors. If you do not already use it, you might consider using the podebconf-report-po utility, which helps warning translators about changes when you modify some debconf templates in your packages. The usual policy when using it is sending a warning to translators when you plan to upload a version of your package with debconf templates changes (even typo corrections). Then leave about one week for them to update their files (several translation teams have a QA process which requires time). podebconf-report-po will take care of sending the translators the needed material as well as getting the translators adresses from the PO files. All you have to do is just using the utility..:-) Example use (from your package build tree): $ podebconf-report-po This will go through debian/po/*.po files, find those needing an update, extract the translators data from these files and prepare a mail to send to these translators (you can also use the --languageteam switch to also mail the mail addresses listed in Language-Team field). You can also use this utility to request for new translations: $ podebconf-report-po --call This will send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with all the needed information and material for new translators to add new languages to your supported languages. Bug#474175: IPv6 support works well
Hi, I managed to add --enable-ipv6 into the configure script for this and build it (on my Mips-based router with 32M RAM, running Debian from a USB stick, so that was a challenge in itself). The capture of IPv6 traffic is working just fine. so this really should be a trivial build change. Bug#474519: nginx: support Debian's /doc/ URL-to-directory mapping
Package: nginx Version: 0.5.35-1~bpo40+1 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hi, in the default installation of nginx, the /doc URL space is not supported. I'd like nginx to support it, simply to not need to install a different webserver to access package information. The attached patch accomplishes that, and contains a hack to make gzip-compressed files easier to use. It's only a hack because nginx does not support the notion of an encoding (yet?). It also has variable time scaling, allowing dynamic adjustment of audio playback speed. Please see the package 'wsola' for more information. .
