Bug#481555: /etc/alternative/emacs left pointing at emacs21, not emacs22 after upgrade
reassign 481555 dpkg thanks On 2008-05-17 02:42 +0200, Ross Boylan wrote: update-alternatives showed emacs was set to manual. I reset it to automatic, and emacs now points to emacs22. This clearly indicates that this is not a bug in the emacs22 packages; update-alternatives does not play nicely if you set an alternative to manual and then remove the preferred alternative. Note that, according to your dpkg log, the emacs21 package was removed before emacs22 was unpacked. Do you know which dpkg version was installed at the time of the upgrade? Similar problems were reported as #433567 and #451872 and claimed to be fixed in dpkg 1.14.13. Sven -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#481572: btlaunchmanycurses.bittornado please fully redraw screen on ^L
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Package: bittornado Version: 0.3.17-1 Severity: minor I'm using btlaunchmanycurses.bittornado on a console-type terminal to seed files. It gives me a nice screen that keeps me up to date on what's going on with transfers. I like that. The internet connection services delivered by my DSL provider is flaky: The connection breaks down regularly once every 24 hours. These breakdowns cause syslogd to write error messages to that same console window. After briefly scanning those messages, I typically want to have that bittornado information back. So I type the customary CTRL-L. Expected behavior: This should cause btlaunchmanycurses to redraw its entire screen, so the syslogd messages are gone. Behavior seen: The screen is only partly redrawn, resulting in a garbled overall layout. Bug#445601: The 2nd Debian Openoffice.org bug triage - bug #445601
This is the first time I have heard of the backports repositories. Searching http://www.debian.org/ did not reveal any useful information, but I did stumble across the name etch-backport. Where can I find more information about the backports repositories? What are the requirements for a package to be included in this reposotory? Can I install only openoffice.org-calc from this repository? If so, how? See http://www.backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=contribute for some of the questions. You can't upgrade just one package from oo.org. -- Lior Kaplan [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG fingerprint: C644 D0B3 92F4 8FE4 4662 B541 1558 9445 99E8 1DA0 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Btw, as for this BTS ping-pong game, Max asked that you file separate bugs instead of reopening this one. This doesn't sound like an unreasonable request, so why not just do that? Robert, i don't really see the reason why this should be done. It's probably helpful to the maintainers to have a separate bug for each violation. I can imagine that working with one [1] huge report while trying to actually fix stuff can be a PITA. Well, i suppose that callign the reporter stupid, as max did is not helpful also. Nor threatenenign me to be blacklisted from the BTS. Max should really calm down, i know he is not agreeing with the firmware split, but this doesn't allow him to be impolite and threatening. I must admit, I would prefer xfs logging to syslog. When debugging the segfault in #148650, the first place I looked was /var/log/syslog. When Nothing showed up there, I started searching for the logs and discovered /var/log/xfs.log. So I would be less surprised if it used syslog. :) Actually, in the default /etc/X11/fs/config there are the following lines: , | # log errors using syslog | use-syslog = on ` which could be useful if only xfs were compiled with syslog support. :-) But we need to deal with the error-file anyway, since that setting is not mandatory. Package: libpq-dev Version: 8.3.1-2+b1 Hi, it seems like pg_config outputs quite a lot of libraries that should just be pulled in through libpgport being linked with them rather than linking all libs using postgres to them: $ pg_config --libs -lpgport -lxslt -lxml2 -lpam -lssl -lcrypto -lkrb5 -lcom_err -lgssapi_krb5 -lz -lreadline -lcrypt -ldl -lm I would think everything here but -lpgport should go, though this probably requires a little bit of testing. -- Tollef Fog Heen UNIX is user friendly, it's just picky about who its friends are -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#481578: unhide: Ignoring SIGCHLD gives tons of false positives
Package: unhide Version: 20071102-2 Severity: important Tags: patch unhide sys works like this: * Do a syscall on a PID. * If that PID exists: * Launch ps using popen() * Verify that the PID is listed * Close the popen()ed stream with pclose() * pclose() implicitly calls wait() to make sure the ps process has finished. However, since the main() function does signal(SIGCHLD, SIG_IGN), the wait() call will just return ECHILD, regardless of whether ps has finished or not. Then, the next syscall finds the ps process that is still alive. But before launching the next ps process, the previous one dies. And we have a hidden process! Since this is a race, it behaves erratically, but I sometimes get a list of over 20 hidden processes this way. This got much more obvious after upgrading from 2.6.22 to 2.6.24. Will attach patch, as well as strace output demonstrating the problem. As it is now, I can't use unhide. Bug#283883: Help with #283883: fail to open oo.org file over samba share in KDE
Hi guys, Could you help me with this bug? I'm trying to open oo.org files over a samba share through KDE. ( I admit, I'm not a KDE user... please don't shoot (: ) The user complained that he received an file not found error from oo.org, and I'd like to figure if that's a problem in OO.org or in KDE. Quoting the mail I sent to Sune a year ago: Did you check which file path dose kio_smb passes to OO.org ? You can maybe check the same idea, with an HTML file and firefox. Because if OO.org gets the wrong path, than it's a bug in kio_smb (or some other part in KDE). Bug#477791: grub: Wrong splash image path construction
I ran into this problem too in Debian Edu, with / and /boot/ on separate partisions. /boot is /dev/hda1, and / is on LVM (/dev/mapper/vg_system-root). In this setting, update-grub generate splashimage=(hd0,0)boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz The correct setting would be splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz This make it very hard to provide a grub splash screen automatically during installation. I was working on updating the debian-edu-artwork package to provide this, but the current result is a error during boot about being unable to read the splash image. severity 481264 normal tags 481264 pending thanks Hi, [ simutrans crashes if starting time is below ~1800, but works for 1840 and later ] Thank you. I could now reproduce the problem. If I set the starting time to a low value, no cities are generated. This causes simutrans to crash when finding travel routes for passengers, or finding a random building (this should be the two problems you reported as 1. and 3.). Bug#481555: /etc/alternative/emacs left pointing at emacs21, not emacs22 after upgrade

Note that, according to your dpkg log, the emacs21 package was removed before emacs22 was unpacked. A similar issue was reported as #311288, merging. FYI, I will start NMUing plugins and components next week, and will break the remaining packages by uploading xulrunner 1.9 in unstable on May 25. Though help will be appreciated, I'll also prepare updated packages for these during this week and next. Here is the patch to implement the change. Though untested, it should work. Note that it would still generate unexpected output if xulrunner-1.9 happens to be installed during the build. Maybe a Build-Conflict would be good to add. Anyways, please upload a new package with the patch applied ASAP. Without action from your part within the next week, I'll upload a NMU. Description #: ../openssh-server.templates:1001 msgid This version of OpenSSH has a considerably changed configuration file from the version shipped in Debian 'Potato', which you appear to be upgrading from. This package can now generate a new configuration file (/etc/ssh/sshd. config), which will work with the new server version, but will not contain any customizations you made with the old version. msgstr Det ser ut til at du oppgraderer fra Debian «Potato», og denne versjonen av OpenSSH har ganske store endringer i oppsettsfila. Robert, i don't really see the reason why this should be done. But the maintainer does, and for a change this request doesn't conflict with the Social Contract. Why are we discussing on whether we prefer one bug or multiple bugs when we have actual SC violations right now that need fixing? It's probably helpful to the maintainers to have a separate bug for each violation. I can imagine that working with one [1] huge report while trying to actually fix stuff can be a PITA. I see that you sent info, but only to the BTS control bot, which prevents it from being reflected in the bug log. I suggest you re-send it. Btw, as for this BTS ping-pong game, Max asked that you file separate bugs instead of reopening this one. This doesn't sound like an unreasonable request, so why not just do that? Robert, i don't really see the reason why this should be done. But the maintainer does, and for a change this request doesn't conflict with the Social Contract. Why are we discussing on whether we prefer one bug or multiple bugs when we have actual SC violations right now that need fixing? What does it gain to close the bug that contains the history of the problem ? It's probably helpful to the maintainers to have a separate bug for each violation. I can imagine that working with one [1] huge report while trying to actually fix stuff can be a PITA. Well, i suppose that callign the reporter stupid, as max did is not helpful also. Nor threatenenign me to be blacklisted from the BTS. Max should really calm down, i know he is not agreeing with the firmware split, but this doesn't allow him to be impolite and threatening. IIRC he was threatening Markus, not you. 15:22:53 maks svenl: don't fuck with the bts or get your email blacklisted kthx Anyway, I suppose by now he realises that was completely inappropiate, and actually counterproductive. Nice of you to have such good faith in the socialness of the members of the kernel team. I have learned not to have such faith myself though. Now can we please get this over with? fine with me, but then, as always, the other side will never forget, and issues will not improve until they recognize that their behaviour is not appropriate, which i have some serious doubt they have the strength of character to do. Package: exim4-config Version: 4.63-17 Severity: important Hi I changed the hostname on my home server. Bug#480587: xcompmg works with x.org 7.2
I made two changes to my system and tested composite again. I got hit by a bug in the current ati driver and ended up reverting my system to x.org 7.2 (and a hand-picked ati driver). I also commented out XAANoOffscreenPixmaps in my x.org. Now xcompmgr doesn't cause x.org to eat as much cpu (about 5-10%), but xfwm4 composite still causes a major hit. Is there actually a reason why it shouldn't just take the newer format and merge, adding fields only the older format defines? I realise this sounds like a bad idea, but I do genuinly wonder why it wouldn't work... mind you, I don't have much experience with the different changes file formats... It wasn't an arbitrary decision - when I discussed this with Raphael Hertzog on IRC before making the changes, he advised that mergechanges should only attempt to merge changes with the same format; I've added the dpkg list to CC for further input. I have taken a short look at the package. This is the first mozilla-pugin source package I have taken a look at, I am not familiar with the best-practices. - Eyeing example packages (venkman) there seems to be some black magic involved, like writing a chrome.d file and generating the correct symlinks in {/usr/share,/var/lib}. Which i why I do not intend to sponsor this. Anyway, I think the following might still be helpful. There are a couple of things that probably need to be fixed: #1 The version number. You (claim to) have taken a svn snapshot and labeled it 1.3.9a. This is going to make problems if you ever want to upload the released version of 1.3.9: - [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp/$ dpkg --compare-versions 1.3.9a-1 \ '=' 1.3.9-1 || echo beta version sorts after release beta version sorts after release - 1.3.9~svn20080307-1 (with 20080307 being the checkout date) would sort correctly and would correctly label this as svn-snapshot. #2 The generation of orig.tar.gz. Please document exactly and in detail how the orig.tar.gz was generated in debian/README.source. This should show how to package a released version (using the .xpi as input), too. #3 There is no seamonkey package in Debbian, you probably should depend on iceape-browser instead. (Not that the package currently works with iceape-browser, there is a magic symlink or chrome.d file missing somewhere.) cu andreas -- `What a good friend you are to him, Dr. Maturin. Bug#481601: Debian-specific patch to Polipo: please revert

There are just too many reasons why you should not have applied it. 1. You did apply a patch relating to security without an explicit ack From upstream. I hope it is clear from the recent OpenSSL debacle why this must not be done. 2. You did apply a patch without first trying to get it applied upstream. You did send me the patch, but only after you applied it. You should only ever apply a patch *after* the patch was rejected upstream *and* you fully understand the reasons why, and believe that these reasons do not apply to Debian. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but taking this approach would have avoided the recent OpenSSL debacle. 3. You changed Polipo's behaviour without documenting it The Debian binary of Polipo now behaves differently from the upstream binary. This will confuse your users and will confuse your friendly upstream when he tries to help your users with debugging. What is more, it will create a rather glaring security hole for anyone who replaces his Debian binary with an upstream binary (which is something people sometimes do, when they need a more recent version). 4. Your patch, while technically correct, will lead to bugs in the future. Your patch manipulates the process' *user* mask, which must never be manipulated by a program. The umask is a global process feature. It will cause a rather glaring security hole if I ever decide to use threads in Polipo. The proper way to do what you need is to use open(O_CREAT) with the right permissions (but obeying the umask), then pass the file descriptor to fdopen. Of course, the permissions should be configurable by a config variable. Any one of the above reasons is enough to ask you to revert this patch. Then, I embedded the NIC firmware in it taken from another image, according to the instructions at http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Debian/BuildImage. This procedure could have been easier. Perhaps a script to embed the firmware. I then followed tbm's instructions at http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/install.html which went mostly well. The only glitch was that locale generation seemed to take forever, and I had to log in to a separate shell and kill the processes. This might have been my fault though, for selecting too many locales to generate. Also, I might not have been patient enough. I did note however that it only stuck on the UTF-8 locales, not the ISO-8859-x ones. Apart from this, everything went fine and the system booted up after installation. -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. Bug#481606: ITP: miktex-tools -- package manager for TeX
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Paul Gevers [EMAIL PROTECTED] As my first contribution to Debian I intend to package the MiKTeX tools from Christian Schenks MiKTeX project. * Package name : miktex-tools Version : 2.7.2960 Upstream Author : Christian Schenk * URL : http://miktex.org/unx * License : GNU General Public Licence, Other/Proprietary License Programming Lang : C++ Description : MPM (MiKTeX Package Manager) is a command-line program used to install TeX packages from a web-based MiKTeX package repository. MPM was originally intended to be a tool for MiKTeX users. But the program can be helpful for users of other TeX systems too, because many of the MiKTeX packages are system-independent. Several additional utility programs are also included: * initexmf is used to configure MiKTeX. * md5walk is used to calculate the fingerprint of a package. * mpc (MiKTeX Package Creator) is used to maintain the contents of a custom package repository. * mthelp is a utility to lookup TeX package documentation. Information about MiKTeX tools can be found at http://miktex.org/unx/. This package is quite large and unfortunately also involves libraries, but I believe that I nearly coped with that. I do have some issue figuring out how the License should read. The text in the project itself says: Copying conditions for MiKTeX To the best of my knowledge, all software in this distribution is freely redistributable (libre, that is, not necessarily gratis), within the Free Software Foundation's definition and Debian Free Software Guidelines. If you find any non-free files included, please contact me. That said, MiKTeX has neither a single copyright holder nor a single license covering its entire contents, since it is a collection of many disparate packages. Therefore, you may copy, modify, and/or redistribute software from MiKTeX only if you comply with the requirements placed thereon by the owners of the respective packages. To most easily learn these requirements, I suggest checking the TeX Catalogue at: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/catalogue.html (or any CTAN mirror). The Catalogue is also included in MiKTeX in doc/html/catalogue/, but the online version will have updates. Of course the legal statements within the packages themselves are the final authority. Should I really check every single file in the project for Debian? I did it in vim: vi test2.ged :set fileencoding -- answer was latin-1 :set encoding -- answer was UTF-8 :set fileencoding=UTF-8 :set fileencoding= -- answer was UTF-8 ZZ 3) created a brand new database, OK, so let's try to go step-by-step on this one. llines - /tmp/llines-test - y - enter first person -ok a - p I'm using vim and en_US.UTF-8 as locale, you were using de_DE.UTF-8 when you reported the bug, please, keep using it and if it fails again, try with en_US.UTF-8 so we can see if l10n has any guilt on this. 0 INDI 1 NAME Felipe/Wiel 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 DEC 1982 2 PLAC 1 DEAT 2 DATE 2 PLAC 1 SOUR And then I said 'y' to add this person to the database. - enter second person -ok n 0 INDI 1 NAME Girlname/Girlsurname 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 15 MAY 1983 2 PLAC 1 DEAT 2 DATE 2 PLAC 1 SOUR And then I said 'y' to add this person to the database. that's exactly what I did (except, that 'y' is 'j' in the german version) - try to make second person spouse of first person - 'failure in memory access' (program stops) Now, what steps did follow to try to marriage them? llines test2 b - 2 (as long as they are not linked to each other I can choose them) h - 1 leads to a few seconds without response and then the programm stops saying message: 11: memory access error create memory excerpt[y/n]? 4) as it was obviously not possible to marry the two persons ;-) in lifelines, I did it manually by editing the .ged file as follows: I copied your database from item 4, I created a new database (llines-test2) in the same way I did for one, and then I read the database (u-r-filename-y) and b-1 didn't crash, I could see first PERSON married with second PERSON. crazy that is exactly what I'doing, but without success... OK, so, we have three things to look out. a) If 3.0.62 solves your problems with encoding. ok, I will try b) Find out what steps you used to try to marry person 1 and 2 see above (b-2-h-1) c) Find out why the database you created crashed with you but not with me ok, so first step would be to try 3.0.62 if that fails, we'll have a look at l10n. BTW: I also tried all this with a ISO-8859-1 encoded database (by hitting 'u' -- 'o' and typing codeset=ISO-8859-1 (without the quotation marks :-)), but it was all the same. Why you didn't use u-c ? I simply didn't know that :-) (was a mixture of what I knew from former versions and what was in the manual) BTW, can you seed what are the options in your u-c screen? sure (of course the german output, I'll put the translation to the lines): Länderspezifische Einstellungen (1/19) - country specific settings │ Interne Zeichentabelle: UTF-8- internal charset. Bug#481505: please distribute usr/lib/libmarc-charset-perl/Table.pag as a sparse file
On Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:43:08AM -0400, Daniel Kahn Gillmor wrote: Package: libmarc-charset-perl Version: 0.98-2 Severity: normal I tried to install libmarc-charset-perl on a machine with a small disk, and it wants to chew up a full 410MB. If I don't know how to distribute a file as a sparse file within the .deb framework, but if it's possible, i'd like to learn. The files in the .deb are actually inside a tar archive (data.tar.gz), which gets created by dpkg-deb. Sparse files aren't handled efficiently by default without the tar '-S' option. While it's possible to inject this option into the build system (TAR_OPTIONS=-S dh_builddeb), dpkg then thinks such a file is corrupt: dpkg: error processing ../libmarc-charset-perl_0.98-2_i386.deb (--install): corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive This means that the sparse file would have to be encapsulated somehow in the .deb and then installed in place with maintainer scripts. This is certainly doable and possibly even justified with such significant space savings. However, I think a better solution would be to change the SDBM storage format in Marc::Charset::Table into something else, preferrably something that's architecture-independent (see #429030) and doesn't use sparse files. This is an upstream issue, of course, but it would help the case if we had a better suggestion to offer :) FWIW, the attached trivial patch changes the backend to GDBM_File while still passing all the tests. This fixes the sparse file problem, but it's probably not a viable alternative for upstream because gdbm linkage is optional while sdbm comes with Perl. And it's still architecture-dependent. I suppose an architecture-independent alternative would be to use nstore_fd and fd_retrieve from Storable, which means that the whole database is slurped in for just one lookup. This is probably an unacceptable regression. Better suggestions welcome. -- Niko Tyni [EMAIL PROTECTED] diff --git a/lib/MARC/Charset/Table.pm b/lib/MARC/Charset/Table.pm index db65c8a..a67862c 100644 --- a/lib/MARC/Charset/Table.pm +++ b/lib/MARC/Charset/Table.pm @@ -34,7 +34,7 @@ UCS code point.
