Andreas Henriksson: Is there any particular reason why your package needs to deviate from which mta is pulled in by default? The package is meant for use for disconnected sites, which do not need a full MTA, so I set it to recommend the simplest I could find (I used to use it everywhere when I was on dial-up). Bug#497116: xorg: random crashes on shutdown
severity 497116 important thank you Sten Heinze wrote: Package: xorg Version: 1:7.3+15 Severity: grave Justification: causes data loss No. xorg crashes randomly on shutdown, i.e. after the desktop environment shut down (closing programs and playing shutdown sound). The screen does not return to the normal console (tty1) but stays black instead and freezes the system (only switching off helps). This happened for me both with KDE 3 and 4 (each using the latest versions available in Debian). Unfortunately no information about the crash is recorded in the log files, and I did not find a clearly reproducable pattern. It usually happens once a day, although I start/shutdown the system only about 2-4 times a day. This is extremely annoying, in particular when losing data after working on it all day. You said the crash occurs on shutdown. Which data can you loose at this point? I am using Thinkpad X40 with an integrated Intel 855GM graphics controller. Please tell me if and how I can provide further help. Please send the whole output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 31 so that we see your config, log and hardware. Is the machine pingable after the crash? Can you restart X without any problem? It would be good if you could: * send us the log of the crashed session (if X already restarted, the previous log is moved to /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old) * catch a backtrace with gdb after installing xserver-xorg-core-dbg and xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg. The easiest way is to connect through ssh from another machine, attach gdb with gdb -p $(pidof X), wait for the crash to occurs, and then ru bt full in gdb. Thus, the problem remains: is there any particular reason for /usr/lib/libecl.so not providing a SONAME? That is not something ECL has to provide. It is more a configuration option that operating systems may provide. The question is whether it is worth. You have to consider the following: with every binary release we are adding more functions and the names of old ones change. That means being a rapidly evolving project we are definitely going to break binary compatibility very frequently. I should rather say with every release. Furthermore, ECL is currently not being used as a library by any project. It is only either a runtime for compiled files or the interpreted environment itself. Do you expect SBCL to use some kind of SONAME for its core? Not really. Juanjo -- Instituto de Física Fundamental CSIC, Serrano, 113, Madrid 28040 (Spain) http://juanjose.garciaripoll.googlepages.com

Bug#496873: ITP: pure -- functional programming language based on term rewriting

Agreed. This is my first time doing a package for Debian, and I'm inexperienced with using Debian's systems. Is there something I need to do to fix this up in Debian's bug system? Version : 0.5 Upstream Author : Albert Gräf Dr.Graef at t-online.de * URL : http://pure-lang.sourceforge.net/ * License : GPLv3 Programming Lang: C, C++, LLVM Description : functional programming language based on term rewriting Long description would appear to be missing. Oops :-( Sorry. I've got this taken care of, to some extent in the package that I've been working on. I just didn't put it in the ITP report. Basically, here is a copy-and-paste from the Pure website: Pure is a functional programming language based on term rewriting. Its core is actually purely algebraic and purely functional, but the name can also be taken as a recursive acronym for the Pure Universal Rewriting Engine. Pure has a modern syntax featuring curried function applications, lexical closures and equational definitions with pattern matching, and thus is somewhat similar to languages of the Haskell and ML variety. But Pure is also a very dynamic language, and is more like Lisp in this respect. The interpreter has an LLVM backend to do JIT compilation, hence programs run blazingly fast and interfacing to C modules is easy. As a language which uses general term rewriting as its underlying computational model (instead of the lambda calculus, which most other functional programming languages are based on), Pure also offers the symbolic evaluation capabilities which you'd expect from such a language. Pure is closely related to the author's Q language and is slated to eventually become its successor, since it offers many new and powerful features and programs run much faster than their Q equivalents. (OTOH, Q still offers many more library modules right now. Most of these will eventually be ported to Pure, but this will take some time.) The package name and the long description need to clearly explain what the package can do and why anyone should want to install it. It should also explain term rewriting which is not clear to me from what you have provided so far. I think term rewriting would be kind of hard for me to explain, but I'll give it a shot. The programmer specifies rewrite rules, which are compiled to do efficient pattern matching and substitution on abstract syntax trees. The rewrite rule looks like this: pattern - expression if condition The pattern matching can be fairly sophisticated, like other languages such as Prolog and Erlang and other functional languages. The expression simply rearranges and evaluates variables/constants/sub-trees which were matched by the pattern. condition is a guard which checks for situations that cannot be handled by pattern matching alone. As Pure (and Q) demonstrate, you can actually make whole entire programming languages based on this idea of term rewriting. I think I am nearly ready to do a request-for-sponsor on the debian-mentors list if there is nothing further to do on this ITP report. Thank you for your comments to help me out since I am very new to this. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please see: http://www.openwall.com/lists/xvendor/2006/04/17/1 To make matters worse, the glibc documentation is buggy: http://sources.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2636 For scanlogd, the correct fix is to update to 2.2.6 - which, by the way, was already out by the time Debian wrongly fixed the bug. I find it likely that many other Debian packages have introduced similar bugs, though (blindly replacing CLK_TCK with CLOCKS_PER_SEC). Even though the files are no longer installed on the system, they are still part of the distribution and therefore are kept in apt-cacher's cache. They are only removed from there once they are removed from the distribution. This is in case another machine on your network wants to install them. Then you have saved bandwidth by only downloading the files once. It is nothing to do with what is currently installed on particular machine(s). Apt-cacher is a proxy cache for a group of machines to save having to download the same file multiple times for each machine. Do you have multiple machines on a network? If not, apt-cacher is probably of no use to you. Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

reassign 497110 partman-dmraid severity 497110 serious thanks On Saturday 30 August 2008, Giuseppe Iuculano wrote: Comments/Problems: I used a set of fakeraid qcow2 format disk images (http://www.themuso.id.au/ubuntu/dmraid-empty-disks.tar.bz2), but boot loader installation failed. It seems that installer recognize /dev/mapper/* as an lvm volume, and so disable grub installation. That should not happen. There is an exception for dmraid devices, which apparently no longer works. From the output you provide the reason seems to be that partitions are now created as dmraid devppartition nr. The problem is the p between the device and the partition number which AFAICT did not use to be there before. This makes the isinstallable test fail for grub-instaoller. I would not be surprised if this would make other changes necessary too. First thing that needs to be determined is what exactly has changed to add this p. Is it a change in dmraid, or in libparted, or elsewhere? When we know that we can check where changes are needed. Do you have any idea yourself where this p comes from? lilo-installaer wants to install lilo in a bad partition, /dev/mapper/sil_aiahbgbgaaajp1 , but the correct is /dev/mapper/sil_aiahbgbgaaaj1 dmraid has never been tested with lilo, so this is not very surprising. I'm reassigning this issue to partman-dmraid as that is the most specific component for dmraid support, even though most needed changes will probably be in grub-installer. Bug#496967: general: System completely blocks any input
Hi, Am 29.08.2008 um 20:20 schrieb Lars Wirzenius: pe, 2008-08-29 kello 19:51 +0200, Frank Küster kirjoitti: Any ideas how I can start debugging this? My first suspicion would be about the hardware. Mine too. You could run memtest86+ for at least 12 hours or until the first error. Can I download an iso image of a boot CD with memtest86+ somewhere? I have only this single Linux machine at the moment, and there's no chance at all that the machine works long enough that I am able to install the package and understand how to create an image. Another idea: you could test the system with another version of Debian, or with Ubuntu, Knoppix, or another live CD, and see if you can reproduce the problem with that. That's exactly what I did and why I am reporting this as a Debian bug: It never occurred when booting from a Knoppix CD, even after hours. The only thing that is different hardware-wise is that the harddisk is mostly inactive in Knoppix. Is there any live system available which can handle lvm volumes? I think I even have some free disk space for an additional partition to install the live system on harddisk. But I cannot access it from Knoppix, and didn't find information on lvm in the Knoppix FAQ. TIA, Frank -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#495144: Lowering severity
On Sat, 2008-08-30 at 01:26 +0100, Neil Williams wrote: severity 495144 important thanks I don't think grave severity for this bug is justifiable. It hangs the whole IDE so I think it is quite severe bug. And it's not just one option which noneone uses. it's quite likely that many users will try to run program that way and then it crashes. The compiled program can be executed normally outside Anjuta. The compiled program can be executed normally *within the terminal* in Anjuta. Yes you can do that, but I think that's just a poor excuse. Many of the developers want to execute program directly from the IDE because it is possible. And you can be sure you annoy lots of people if this bug is not fixed in Lenny. I've been using Anjuta regularly for years and I have not needed to use Execute Program from the build menu. If you don't use it, it does not mean noone uses it. Eg. I usually do use it. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#497042: [Pkg-mediawiki-devel] Bug#497042: mediawiki: populateCategory.php script fails with PostgreSQL
severity 497042 important thanks Le Friday 29 August 2008 15:18:33 Jaume Sabater, vous avez écrit : Package: mediawiki Version: 1:1.13.0-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Well, not really, mysql users and fresh postgresql users can still use the package.. Using PostgreSQL 8.3.3 and Mediawiki 1.13. Upgraded from Mediawiki 1.12 to 1.13. Had to execute the populateCategory.php script inside maintenance due to the changes made by upstream in the software, so that new category and categorylinks tables are populated. When doing so, it fails and leaves the pages plenty of corrupted information, displaying tons of links/pages that should not be there. Please note the segmentation fault at the end. The update.php executed before also ended in a segmentation fault error, but seemed to work fine. Ok, this issue seems to come from a custom debian patch. Bug#495257: Possible upgrade solution
I've just asked upstream to comment on this issue. In the mean time, would this be a possible solution: can the postinst of the new package force a restart of all the services (possibly including gdm et al to restart user sessions) which depend on the system bus? It's a bit ugly, but a. if this is an etch-lenny upgrade they will probably all be restarted anyway and b. it's still better than an actual reboot. Bug#494031: Please try building paraview
Hi, I've proposed a patch [0] to fix an RC bug in paraview [1] (FTBFS on sparc). Unfortunately, after applying the patch, the package build fails in random places for me (not related to the initial problem) in roughly half of the build attempts (in the other half the package is built successfully). It might be some weird issue with the build system or toolchain, there is also a chance that my hardware is broken (even though until now I was not able to notice any problems while building other packages). If you have a chance and a reasonably fast sparc box (it takes about 6 hours to build on my SunBlade1000), please try building paraview from sid with the patch [0], preferrably a few times, and report if you encounter any failures. Bug#497167: [PATCH] add support for -L pdftex
Package: transfig Version: 1:3.2.5-rel-3.1 Hi, although fig2dev is able to produce a .pdf and a .tex file from a FIG input, transfig is currently cannot create a Makefile for such case. Bug#497168: grub-installer cant change grub settings
Package: grub-installer Version: 1.32 Severity: grave When I install Debian on computer with other operation system, and want to setup grub not on main boot section but only on Linux partition (hd0,4) to use bootmanager from other OS, If user mistakenly choose wrong partition (in my case it was (hd0,3) ) he will get error message, after it will be possible to go back to menu and try again steps, But it will be not possible to install grub at all (on right partition). I suggest that grub-installer should detect possible Linux partitions for installing and show them to user. Or at least show partition list on page where user must enter partition number. And the best if it will also allow to reset grub partition if its not possible to install to what user enter. I am using expert install from 28.08.2008 debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso in Graphic and Text modes, tried both grub and grub2. System was successfully installed only after reboot and new install with correct (hd0,4) settings. Ubuntu also have this problem. I can try again to re-install system if it will be needed for testing. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#497110: boot loader installation failed when dmraid=true
(No need to CC me on replies.) On Saturday 30 August 2008, Giuseppe Iuculano wrote: Frans Pop ha scritto: First thing that needs to be determined is what exactly has changed to add this p. Is it a change in dmraid, or in libparted, or elsewhere? When we know that we can check where changes are needed. Do you have any idea yourself where this p comes from? I don't know where this p comes from, Well, I assume that the p stands for partition. It is a somewhat common separator. The question is why it is showing up suddenly now and what is responsible for adding it. this is an ls -la after partitions (from network shell installer) [...] But in the next reboot , from network shell installer: What exactly do you mean by network shell installer? That is not really a meaningfull term for us. If this is some Debian Installer image, then please specify exactly what image you were using (full URL of the image you downloaded is good). I guess the two boots were with the exact same version of the installer and the same boot options? If that is the case then something is really broken. Exactly at what point of the installation did you do the 'ls -la'? Was this before or after partitioning? The best point to do it would be after hardware (disk) detection, but before partitioning. Obviously we cannot really support something that is so unpredictable. From the info so far I would say that the problem is either in dmraid or maybe in the device-mapper (either user space or kernel). I suggest that you try to determine what causes the difference by saving and carefully comparing the output of dmesg, various dmraid commands, maybe info available in /proc/, the output of fdisk -l for the underlying real devices, etc. What is also suspicious is the missing partition 2, which I suspect is an extended partition. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#496967: general: System completely blocks any input
Hi, Am 29.08.2008 um 23:44 schrieb J.A. Bezemer: Boot with init=/bin/sh and wait. Still hangs? - kernel or hardware problem. It didn't hang for nearly an hour, and now again with the first couple of scripts in /etc/rcS.d executed it is running for 20 minutes. I'll give it 15 minutes after each change and then try the next couple of scripts. By the way, is there a possibility to stop a process in /bin/sh? I executed while true; do uptime; sleep 10; done and couldn't stop it with Ctrl+c. I invoked bash as a workaround. Open case and put a big fan in front. Replace power supply. It's a laptop, and the sensors didn't report anything suspicious. It hangs with battery only and with external power only, that doesn't matter. I have switched back to i810 in my xorg.conf and it is not able to detect my graphic card. I have traced the problem in gdb. xf86MatchDevice is called with drivername set to intel. In xf86CallDriverProbe, drv-PciProbe!=NULL and I get into the last else. drv-Probe is NULL so I don't get into the old probe method and foundScreen is FALSE.
