Bug#496603: referenced change
The change: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/kernel-svn-changes/2008-July/010621.html describes the removal of SATA_SIS in favour of PATA_SIS, so I shall try that. Bug#497108: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#497108: /usr/bin/nm-vpn-properties belongs to the network-manager-gnome package
On Mon, 2008-09-01 at 12:22 +0200, Michael Biebl wrote: No, you are right, the network-manager package has no GNOME dependencies although it ships nm-vpn-properties, a GNOME application. This is actually a bit of a hack. The monolithic NetworkManager source tarball was split into a core part and GUI/GNOME part in version 0.6.5. Unfortunately nm-vpn-properties remained in the core network-manager package. We had the option to split nm-vpn-properties into yet another package, make the network-manager binary package depend on GNOME libs, or cheat a little and exclude the GNOME dependencies from network-manager. We chose the last option. We assumed, that anyone using nm-vpn-properties will also use nm-applet from network-manager-gnome, which will pull in all the necessary dependencies. Another reason was, that in the upcoming 0.7 release, nm-vpn-properties will be dropped from the network-manager core package, so a separate binary package seemed like a bit of overkill. And making the network-manager binary depend on GNOME libs was also not an option, given that it is used by KDE only desktops. Hope this clarifies the situation a bit. Absolutely, thanks for the insight. It's effectively okay for me in the end since aptitude installed the 'network-manager-gnome' alongside (because it's a Recommends). It turned out that I was investigating a bug (all my gnome app starting in 'offline mode', fixed) and exploring the network-manager binaries in a X-less root shell: nm-vpn-properties unexpectedly asked for a display. I thought I would notify. Case closed it seems :). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#497384: mcabber: should have libgcrypt11-dev in Build-Depends
Package: mcabber Version: 0.9.7-0.1 Severity: minor Hi! mcabber directly uses libgcrypt11-dev and checks for it in configure, but it doesn't directly Build-Depend on it but rather depends on libotr2-dev to pull it in. This does yield a problem because the stable version of libotr2-dev doesn't have that dependencies - and direct dependencies should always be set directly and not be pulled in through others. So long, and thanks for taking care of the package, Rhonda -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#497365: libc6 man pages don't mention real bug reporting procedure
Hi, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Package: manpages-dev Version: 3.07-1 Severity: wishlist File: /usr/share/man/man3/getopt.3.gz Just looking at pages like the above, which I suppose is libc6 related, it is very hard to find out where to report bugs to. Yes, This is true. http://www.kernel.org/doc/man-pages/ is mentioned, but that is for things wrong with the man page itself. But for bugs like please implement unsetting auto_abbrev like on Getopt::Long.3perl the real place to learn where to send bugs is (my guess:) /usr/share/doc/libc6/BUGS and thus http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/ , Yes, that's the right place. but one could never figure that out just looking at /usr/share/man/man3/getopt.3.gz ! Therefore there is a whole class of man pages that don't say the real party to contact. The real party that I want people to contact here is the documentation maintainer -- i.e., me -- but that is for *documentation* bugs. Once upon a time, there was no COLOPHON, and people didn't know where to report documentation bugs. (and in response to your bug, I now added the word documentation to the COLPHON to make it clear that the referred-to website is only for information about reporting documentation bugs. Reporting code problems is more difficult. Yes, if it's a system call bug raise a bug at the kernel.org bugzilla, and if it's a glibc bug, then raise a bug at sourceware.org. But those paths often *won't* gain quick traction, since what is really required is to CC relevant individuals on the report. And finding those individuals requires some effort -- e.g., looking for names in the source, or looking in the VCS to see who touched the relevant source files. In the man pages, I can't practically identify those individuals for each documented interface. Hi Guido! Can you always cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED], please? There's now way in getting added programs via .Xsession or similar. AFAIK there's no *-session which manages ~/.Xsession or similar. This means that zhone-session is not different from the rest of the world. One either has to modify /etc/init.d/zhone-session or /usb/bin/zhone-session. I'd be nice if the later would at least source e.g. /etc/zhone-startup or something similar. one can use /etc/X11/Xsession.d of course so having an extra config file is not necessary. This is a general option, not something user-specific. While I agree that we need something user-specific, I don't sure we should spend time implementing it. ATM zhone-session is just a hack, so hopefully soon customization to its start will be done through a proper Xsession and WM. Thx, bye, Gismo / Luca pgp4XBJ62HsCL.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#497318: installation-reports: Debian testing i386 20080831 on Compal FL90 (PM965): Success after issues
clone 497318 -1 reassign -1 hw-detect retitle -1 check-missing-firmware: asks the same files again after refusing the first time thanks On Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 04:47:24PM -0400, Filipus Klutiero wrote: Then there is an issue with the non-free firmware loading feature. d-i asks whether I want to load iwlwifi 3945 firmware at the right time, but then (maybe only when I deny loading it) re-asks for that firmware pretending that the HDD requires it. This is similar to #491712. This is not the first image I test that contains this bug. If you answer No the first time, then the firmware will still be requested later on, so the second time check-missing-firmware is run, it will be asked again. Looks avoidable by recording the firmware files that were previously denied. Finally, the worst issue is detection of network interfaces. At first, d-i asks whether I want to try detecting Ethernet on FireWire, which is according to d-i something I would improbably use, or something like that, since no Ethernet interfaces were detected. This is abnormal, because I have an Ethernet card, a 802.11 card and a Firewire card on this machine. The Ethernet card, Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02), works fine with Linux 2.6.26. I chose not to try detecting that, and if I remember correctly, the normal flow of d-i was then broken and I had to change some answers to continue. d-i wouldn't want to detect the Ethernet card even when indicating to use tg3. Later, d-i correctly showed eth0 (Ethernet), wlan0 (802.11) and eth1 (1394), but showed all of them as Firewire ethernet. I can't remember exactly the sequence of prompts, but I don't mind reinstalling. *sigh* I thought that we had fixed this in hw-detect 1.66, uploaded on August, 26th. Right at the begining of the installer, could you switch to a console (Alt+F2) and use nano to add set -x to /bin/hw-detect and /bin/ethdetect. Please send back the resulting logs (gzipped). Bug#497271: trigger: Homepage do not exist any more
Hi, tags: +pending thanks On Sunday 31 August 2008 15:05:53 Stefan Ritter wrote: Package: trigger Version: 0.5.2-2+b1 Severity: minor Hi, in the debian/control file is a link to http://www.positro.net/trigger/ that do not exist anymore. I think http://sourceforge.net/projects/trigger-rally/ is the right page. thanks for the info, that's fixed in the debian/games svn repository since some time. However since also the packages will get renamed to trigger-rally instead of trigger, this will only get uploaded after lenny. Bug#497342: nvi No Longer Opens Files with O_NONBLOCK, Causing XTXTBSY Errors
On Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 04:14:21AM +0200, Jan Christoph Nordholz wrote: Thank you for your prompt reply, Jan. Performing the following steps on the Debian nvi packages 1.79-26 and 1.81.6-3 produces different results. that's strange - I can reproduce it with both versions here. I just tested three Debian installs, on two different computers, and I still get different behavior from 1.79* and 1.81.6-3. I've appended partial output from reportbug --template nvi (1.79*) on each system to this email. I.e., as long as nvi has the file itself open for writing (no matter whether that access is exclusive or not) instead of a backup file, execve() cannot succeed. Ok. Looking closer at the straces I attached to my previous emails, I found these differences: 1.81.6-3 221:open(bin/myxplanet, O_RDWR) = 4 222:fcntl64(4, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0 1.79-26 ~~~ 93:open(bin/myxplanet, O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK) = 3 100:fcntl64(3, F_GETFL) = 0x800 (flags O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK) 1.81 opens the file Read/Write; 1.79 opens it read-only. That made me wonder how 1.79 writes. A new strace involving an edit and a :w shows that 1.79 writes by opening the file again as write-only: 1.79-26 (Extra) ~~~ open(bin/myxplanet, O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_TRUNC, 0666) = 7 fcntl64(7, F_GETFL) = 0x1 (flags O_WRONLY) fstat64(7, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0755, st_size=0, ...}) = 0 mmap2(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb7f99000 _llseek(7, 0, [0], SEEK_CUR)= 0 write(7, #!/bin/bash -eu\n\n\nENV=~/.xplanet/..., 1410) = 1410 fstat64(7, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0755, st_size=1410, ...}) = 0 fsync(7)= 0 close(7)= 0 The only way around this would be to make a full copy of the original file, work on that and atomically copy the changes back on :w... but I don't remember a nvi version that did that. It looks like vim uses that method with its .swp files. I think the nvi developers should either revert to the old dual-open or switch to the vim temporary file method, but not keep the file open for writing any longer than need be. Explanation: At this point etch proftpd was removed, but not purged, so successive installation of proftpd-basic retained the old configuration files, which were of course not compatible with the current -basic package, because additional modules are missing. Note that the old configuration files indeed loaded ALL modules by default, including the now missing ldap/mysql/pgsql files. This situation requires a by hand intervention to fix configuration. Note that installing proftpd-basic IS NOT the suggested way to upgrade, and is not supported anyway, this is the precise reason why lenny proftpd pseudo-package exists. In a new installation proftpd-basic would work without problems and an upgrade/dist-upgrade would also work correctly with default configuration or also other custom configuration (becauses all available modules would be installed as well). Forcing a configuration purging would also be incorrect anyway. The only pratical hack would be checking consistency among configuration and available module and gratiously stop with a message: nothing so much different from the rough diagnostic by proftpd at loading time. In other words, the answer is: you CAN install proftpd-basic to upgrade but DON'T do that, or you will be in any case on your own. What it would be appropriate is simply a proper message by proftpd daemon - i.e. an improvement by upstream in order to have a better diagnostic. All other actions done in your report simply trashed things more than that. Note that proftpd packages are conservative about configuration files they find, only minimal well-known changes are done, all the rest is an admin duty. -- Francesco P. Bug#497400: munin-node: hddtemp_smartctl should also find SATA drives
Package: munin-node Version: 1.2.5-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch I just found out that munin does not list the HD temperature of my SATA drives. I just duplicated the IDE section in hddtemp_smartctl and changed it for sd* drives. Seems to work fine on my etch box (witch recent smartmontools installed). I applied my change to the hddtemp_smartctl.in file I found in munin-1.2.6 and attached the resulting patch (untested for this version). This issue was once discussed upstream http://munin.projects.linpro.no/ticket/530 and rejected due to breakage of SCSI drives. But I guess this was a result of the change to the smartctl parameters which seems unnecessary for recent smartmontools. Bug#483417: Patch for the l10n upload of ttf-mathematica4.1

Please feel free to use all of it...or only the l10n part of it. I'm confused a bit with the patch. It looks the patch is duplicated, i.e. the first half is same as the rest of it but this is not a big problem. (I manually removed the last halfof the patch.) Then it seems ja.po and sv.po are not the same as those in bug reports. Is this intentional? I'd like to wait until the situation looks clear and sorry if I misunderstand something. also sprach Jérémy Bobbio [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008.09.01.1458 +0100]: While the md devices were creating formatting inside the installer, the seemingly long delays left me wondering if the installation was going to hang. A message informing a user that these steps could take a while might ease concern. What seemingly long delay? Creation should be quick, and the formatting should take as long as with any other filesystem. Please be a lot more precise with your reports. After installation, cat /proc/mdstat showed md1 : active(auto-read-only). Had to issue sudo mdadm --readwrite /dev/md1 to correct. It will turn off auto-read-only as soon as you write to it. md1 is not listed in mount output. Is it maybe your swap? gparted (GUI) does not recognize all partitions correctly and lists several of them as 'unknown'.\ fdisk -l complained of invalid partitions (listed above). Which ones? Also note that /dev/md* are not partitions. Not 100% confident these arrays are safe for data. They seem fine. You provide very little information and expect us to read between lines or to ask questions. This steals a lot of time. Please try in the future to provide everything that's relevant. Bug#483464: aptitude: section descriptions are not translated to the locale encoding
On Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:43:23PM +0200, Michal Politowski [EMAIL PROTECTED] was heard to say: In the pl_PL locale with the ISO-8859-2 encoding, the package sections descriptions from aptitude-defaults.pl are not translated to the locale encoding but the utf-8 strings are displayed as is, which produces unreadable descriptions. Do you get this only in the section descriptions? Bug#497401: libunique assumes dbus-launch(1) is installed, as well as libdbus.
Package: libunique-1.0-0 Version: 1.0.0-1 Severity: normal I'm trying to create midori packages. As a convenience to dbus-using midori-users, I built it with libunique support. However, *I* do not use dbus, so if I try to run the same binary on my system, I get $ midori (midori:25212): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Unable to open a connection to the session bus: Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session (midori:25212): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Unable to connect to the running instance, aborting. An instance of Midori is already running but not responding. $ $ env | grep -i dbus $ which dbus-launch As you can see, either midori or libunique does not correctly handle the situation where the app was built with libunique *SUPPORT*, but dbus is not available at runtime. It seems to me that if this is wontfixed, I'll have to either make midori depend on libdbus-bin, or create two separate binary packages: midori (for dbus users) and midori-nounique (for everyone else). If libunique is correctly reporting the error to the application (midori), and midori isn't understanding the error, please reassign this bug to midori 0.0.21-1 and I'll chase the issue up with the midori developers. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_AU.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages libunique-1.0-0 depends on: ii libc6 2.7-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.76-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.11-3 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libx11-6 2:1.1.4-2 X11 client-side library libunique-1.0-0 recommends no packages. libunique-1.0-0 suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#497339: gdm: Login disappears when switching user
Le lundi 01 septembre 2008 à 10:18 +1000, Russell Weatherburn a écrit : The situation I have found is that I have two users who switch between VT7 and VT8. Since changing to Lenny, I have found that VT7 appears to be stable, but the user who logs into VT8 can run the session for a period of time, however if the users xscreensaver comes on and locks the screen and the switch user button is clicked the VT8 session will disappear. In this case, are there errors in the /var/log/gdm/:1.log and /var/log/Xorg.1.log files ? A similar situation I have also seen when using vnc4server, however it occurred with VT7. VT7 became unusable, however switching users and using VT10 was possible. What do you mean by unusable? If this bug should be pointed elsewhere, please let me know. It is probably a bug in your graphics driver causing a crash when you switch to or from another VT. Cheers, -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. Bug#497404: matchbox-keyboard: accidentally repeats keys if there is heavy load
Package: matchbox-keyboard Version: 0.1-1 Severity: normal On my openmoko freerunner matchbox-keyboard often repeats keys if there is heavy load. On my keyboard layout the keys are so large that redrawing the keys alone often seems to take considerable time. I can workaround the issue by increasing repeat_delay in mb_kbd_ui_event_loop(). My guess is that if the release event is delivered late to matchbox-keyboard it will generate spurious key repeats. Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce this on my desktop machine even if I add load to the system. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Gnome-terminal is able to use multiple fonts as needed to display unicode characters. Testing with current gnome-terminal and Vim, this does indeed work correctly. As such, I'm closing it. Well, currently both cat and emacs -nw can show the character correctly in the same gnome-terminal, but vim still only shows a question mark. I see no reason to close it. I closed it because Vim *is* working correctly for me in gnome-terminal. The source of this regression is known. Pending upload to unstable. -- Martin-Éric Racine http://q-funk.iki.fi
Bug#497406: can hang for long time at boot
Package: aiccu Version: 20070115-9 Severity: normal It seems that aiccu does not background itself until after it's gotten a connection, or given up. Normally, this does not cause a long delay. My laptop is offline right now, and when I try to start aiccu, it takes it only 20 seconds to fail to start. I think that sixxs is down (can't get to their website etc). This may explain why aiccu was today hanging for a very long time when started (observed on multiple systems) including on boot. A user reported a hang of 15 minutes, though it looks like after an hour plus, it finally gave up and let the boot continue. For systems where nothing in the boot process depends on a functional ipv6 network, I'd really like to be able to configure aiccu to start entirely in the background, avoiding any unpredictabe delays of this sort. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages aiccu depends on: ii debconf 1.5.23 Debian configuration management sy ii iproute 20080725-2 networking and traffic control too ii iputils-ping3:20071127-1 Tools to test the reachability of ii iputils-tracepath 3:20071127-1 Tools to trace the network path to ii libc6 2.7-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgnutls26 2.4.1-1 the GNU TLS library - runtime libr ii lsb-base3.2-20 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip Versions of packages aiccu recommends: ii ntp 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-7 Network Time Protocol daemon and u aiccu suggests no packages. -- debconf information excluded -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#497363: This issue is RC
severity 497363 serious thanks Hi, This zombie issue with facter/puppet should be considered an RC bug and an update to facter 1.5.1 should be done with a request to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for a release exception. The justification is that this release of facter causes a pretty severe zombie problem, resulting in puppet to break (effectively it stops responding and memory usage accumulates). The only way to get puppet back is to login to every machine and kill it and restart it. This gets old fast. I would be surprised if people disagreed with me that this violated the following two release criteria[0]: * makes unrelated software on the system (or the whole system) break * makes the package in question unusable or mostly so The following release criteria, if I were maintainer, would also be one that I would apply: * in the maintainer's opinion, makes the package unsuitable for release As the person who uploaded 1.5 as a NMU, I would be happy to NMU 1.5.1 to fix these issues and request the release exception. Please contact me right away if you would prefer that I not do this. Micah 0. http://release.debian.org/lenny/rc_policy.txt signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#489287: fix for /boot/grub/core.img issue
Robert Millan wrote: Hi, We believe that these three bugs are all caused by the same problem, which is now fixed in latest upload to experimental (1.96+20080826-1). If you can, please try that version and confirm that the problem is fixed for you. If it's not, tell us about it as soon as you can. This seems to have fixed my problem. Bug#497408: drop gpicview dependency
Package: lxde Version: 0.3.2.1+svn20080509-4 Severity: serious Hi, we're trying to remove gpicview from lenny because it is too buggy (see #495968 for the discussion). Your package is the only reverse dependency. Could you please remove the dependency?
