Bug#472822: apt-cacher: Apt-cacher needs to depend on libberkeleydb-perl
Without libberkeleydb-perl installed apt-cacher-cleanup.pl which is run from a daily cron job also fails to start since it depends on it. Installing it fixes the problem. I just noticed it today since cron sent me an error mail. Kind regards, Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#497508: aptitude: repeatedly wants to update to equal version
Hi Daniel, Daniel Burrows schrieb: Ok. Well, it looks like a problem with your mirrors to me. Each of the version 1.7-21s is actually different from the others (it has a different md5sum). Package: time Version: 1.7-21 MD5sum: b320ca25662e5621e6ddc8cad6a1343f Package: time Version: 1.7-21 MD5sum: cf0078ab0c573281d96411894d807469 Package: time Version: 1.7-21 (no md5sum?) Is this the installed version? The output of apt-cache showpkg time would help; it should say which archive each md5sum is from. The output is attached. On my system, time version 0.7-21 (from stable and oldstable) has the md5sum 09df22253b46100e61c770e89872cc3c. Neither of the packages in the above archives has the right md5sum. Is your system amd64? What I don't understand is why apt is accepting a Packages file that's corrupted. Do you get GPG failures when you update? No I don't get any Errors. But it might be that the versions on oldstable are different from the versions in stable since oldstable of amd64 was not in the main archive and all the packages were recompiled for the etch release but the version number was not bumbed. So this might be why the package has different md5s in oldstable and stable. But still apt-get should register correctly the installed version and identify it. If I understand this correctly, in the above output the installed version should have an md5sum and this would identify the installed version with the version in der Package file? So the question would be, why is apt-get not writing the installed versions md5 into the status db? You can try to play around with this, but I highly doubt it would work, since it's the kernel that has not yet detected the device. Actually, I added a line with `udevadm settle' to checkfs.sh, and it had no effect -- the USB memory stick that I plugged in before the reboot was only recognized a few seconds after checkfs.sh had run. Maybe checking specifically if any system to be checked is being connected. The only real solution to this may be an event-based init system, like upstart that is used in Ubuntu and Fedora. There's also a Debian package in experimental if you're feeling adventurous. Sven -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#497629: Rotation of pages does work on manual double sided scanning
Package: gscan2pdf Version: 0.9.25 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- I wish to scan part of a book using an epson gt-2500 scanner. The odd pages (facing) need to be rotated 180 degrees and the even pages (reverse) do not need to be rotated. However with the following settings I have a a problems concerning rotation of pages which I would like some help with: Page Options tab/Scan Document window 1. # Pages is set to # and 3 (assume 3 pages for the sake of this problem) 2. Source document set to double sided 3. Side to scan set to facing 4. Post Processing, with Rotate Facing side 180 and Rotate Reverse side not checked at all. I then click on scan and the three facing pages are scanned (and I can see they are number 1, 3 and 5 BUT: only pages 1 and 5 are rotated 180 degrees, page 3 is not rotated I then set the options for the facing pages: 1. # Pages is set to # and 3 (assume 3 pages for the sake of this problem) 2. Source document set to double sided 3. Side to scan set to reverse 4. Post Processing, with Rotate Facing side 180 and Rotate Reverse side not checked at all I then click on scan and the three reverse pages are scanned starting with page 6, and they are inserted into the right place, 6 after 5, 4 after 3 and 2 after 1. BUT: 2 and 4 are rotated 180 degrees, page 6 is not rotated. Work around: (i) On Facing side scanning, set post processing rotation for both facing and reverse both to 180 degrees; (ii) On Reverse side scanning, post processing rotation, untick (ie do not use) for both facing and reverse side rotation. Bug#496660: hal-cups-utils: Bugs perhaps fixed with the new (unstable) version of hplip
Package: hal-cups-utils Followup-For: Bug #496660 Hi, I reported a bug against hal-cups-utils (#496660). I think it might be fixed with hplip 2.8.6.b-1. The changelog says: * debian/patches/hp-makeuri-uri-only-output.dpatch: Fix URI-only output of hp-makeuri. This is required for system-config-printer to assign HPLIP CUPS backends to print queues (Fixes LP: #245199). I do not have access to the system where the bug occurs initially, so I cannot test if it really fixes it. However, I think now that #496660 should be handled for lenny (as it can break working printing system on upgrade and it is not so easy to find a workaround for the admin system). So, it would be good if someone with an hp printer can test #496660 (to reproduce and see if hplip 2.8.6.b-1 fixes it). In this case, it can be an additionnal reason to allow a freeze exception for hplip 2.8.6.b-1 (already asked by the maintainer) Best regards, Vincent -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.27-rc3-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages hal-cups-utils depends on: ii cups 1.3.8-1Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii hal 0.5.11-3 Hardware Abstraction Layer ii libc6 2.7-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcups2 1.3.8-1Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.1-3simple interprocess messaging syst ii libhal1 0.5.11-3 Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii python2.5.2-2An interactive high-level object-o ii python-cupsutils 1.0.0-2Python utility modules around the ii python-dbus 0.83.0-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii python-gobject2.14.2-1 Python bindings for the GObject li hal-cups-utils recommends no packages. Bug#497259: lxappearance: Preview does not work
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi. Andrew Lee, 03.09.2008 09:53: lxappearance only works in pure gtk+ environment, not in any desktop environment except LXDE. Isn’t LXDE partially based on Xfce? If you really want to use lxappearance on XFCE or GNOME, you have to tune off xsettings-daemon in XFCE or GNOME, otherwise the xsettings-daemon will block it's effect. I have never ever heard of such a daemon and there’s definitely no such a daemon running on my system. Or is this actually some common term to refer to daemons like xfce-mcs-manager? I can not quit the latter since the whole desktop will then fall back to GTK1-like rendering. I am now closing this bug. Feel free to reopen it if it still doesn't work for you in a pure gtk+ environment. I am still not sure that I understand your definition of a pure gtk+ environment. Bug#497259: lxappearance: Preview does not work
Mathias Brodala wrote: Isnt LXDE partially based on Xfce? No. XFCE is a good and very famous DE aimed for lightweight. And LXDE is also lightweight, but less famous. LXDE is just another DE which is samller and faster than XFCE, but less functions. I have never ever heard of such a daemon and theres definitely no such a daemon running on my system. Or is this actually some common term to refer to daemons like xfce-mcs-manager? I can not quit the latter since the whole desktop will then fall back to GTK1-like rendering. I guess that's it. You can probably get lxappearance works after you quit xfce-mcs-manager. I am still not sure that I understand your definition of a pure gtk+ environment. That means without some Desktop Environment components, like xsettings-daemon. -Andrew -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#497633: Reducing noise in ~/.xsession-errors
Hi, I had a bug report about gnash putting too much stuff in ~/.xsession-errors [1]. I've just checked my own system and ~/.xsession-errors was quite big too, what is something that I hadn't noticed before. In the bug report it is suggested that debug output only should be enabled on request, is that currently supported by the code someway? Bug#497622: runs along after package removal
On 2008-09-03 08:03, Debian Bug Tracking System wrote: Please don't joke, adminis should be able to read a package description and act ad due. Stupidity and shallowness cannot be fixed by packages. Proftpd is a pseudo-package in lenny and its removing is commonly done after upgrade without breakage. Did you mind to read documentation? My error: I shouldn't do work before 09:00. I used apt-get show proftpd (without piping to pager) to print the package description and there was nothing about pseudo-package. I did not realise that two different package descriptions were printed - the second one from stable, when proftpd wasn't pseudo. And proftpd has no README. Still, does this mean, that somebody who had proftpd on etch, upgrades to lenny, and finally uninstalls proftpd, would have the same problem? What do you mean with removing is commonly done? There is no mentioning of removing the package, nor does the package look like a transitional package (e.g. dummy or transitional in the short description). Btw: The wording pseudo-package is misleading, IMHO. We use pseudo-package for wnpp, ftp.debian.org etc. in the BTS. This is probably a meta-package. The last sentence You should install ... is misleading as well, as the package already installs the packages via dependencies. How about: This is a convenience meta-package to install proftpd-basic and all modules needed for advanced features. It can savely be removed without rendering proftpd non-funcional. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#497635: gkrellm: ownership of /var/lock/gkrellm
Package: gkrellm Version: 2.3.1-7 Severity: minor The first user of gkrellm seems to get privileged access to the lockfile directory. Installing gkrellm doesn't create it: $ ls -l /usr/bin/gkrellm /var/lock/gkrellm ls: /var/lock/gkrellm: No such file or directory -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 806520 2008-08-12 10:08 /usr/bin/gkrellm Then I sudo adduser test, log in to X as test, and launch gkrellm. It works very nicely - an indispensable piece of software, thanks for maintaining it! But now, even after I log out: $ ls -Fla /var/lock/gkrellm total 12 drwxr-xr-x 2 test test 4096 2008-09-02 21:27 ./ drwxrwxrwt 4 root root 4096 2008-09-02 21:27 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 test test 11 2008-09-02 21:27 LCK..1001_:0.0 This lockfile directory has been created as the property of UID 1001, and isn't writable to other unprivileged users. When I log in as myself and launch gkrellm, it can't create a lockfile there. The app still runs with no obvious sign of any Denial of Service, but I can't believe this is how things were meant to be. If I change the permissions on /var/lock/gkrellm to be tmpdir-style (like /var/lock itself), things work the way I imagine was intended, with per-user-and-per-display lockfiles coexisting in the same shared directory: $ ls -Fla /var/lock/gkrellm total 16 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 2008-09-02 22:18:03 ./ drwxrwxrwt 4 root root 4096 2008-09-02 21:40:39 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 jbr jbr11 2008-09-02 22:26:12 LCK..1000_:0.0 -rw-r--r-- 1 test test 11 2008-09-02 22:18:03 LCK..1001_:0.0 It seems to me that the directory /var/lock/gkrellm should be included in the package gkrellm, with permissions as above. Bug#497398: reprepro: Exclude certain components from repository
On Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 05:39:35PM +0200, Bernhard R. Link wrote: * Moritz Augsburger [EMAIL PROTECTED] [080901 15:16]: Currently, all packages that do not match a certain component in their Section field get put into the first available component. I would like to be able to specify some components that get never included in the repository. I'm a bit undecided what would be a good way to implement this in a clean general way. The section itself is primarily a section, and unknown values there means usually just a subsection. I assume your packages in the case have a section like foo-private/subsection? Yes and no - that was the way we thought to do it when when I wrote the bugreport, but now we decided all our packages will get the same component but different sections. So we need to allow component == foo and not ( section == restricted or section == private ) [...] Without that that would need some filtering based on the section field. The questions is where to do this. (2) One possiblity would be to extend the uploaders file with arbitrary filtering (I wanted to add some more filters anyway, and just some based on fields sounds quite a good thing to start with). This would only work with include and processincoming (and not includedeb or includedsc AFAIR), though. I think this is the best idea, but the file/keyword should be renamed to soemthing more descriptive like permissions or upload-requirements. Then you should implement a bit more complex filter syntax, I thought of allow/deny statements, and the first one matching decides, eg: | allow from key-id 0xblablaa | deny component == foo-restricted | allow component == foo section == public | allow component == foo key-id 0xfoobar | deny component == foo | allow * This way, 0xblablaa would be able to upload everything, even into foo-restricted and all other. Nobody else can upload into foo-restricted. Upload to component foo is only allowed if section is public or (and then to any section) if key-id is 0xfoobar. All other components/sections are free for everybody. You could match to all fields available in the changes/control/...-files, and a field not available evaluates to true. Additionaly, there should be the key-id of the uploader requiring a signature. I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to use them with includedeb or includedsc, I think all required informations are included in them. Which of those options (1-4) would suite you? Do you see any advantages / disadvantages I missed? As I wrote above, #2 seems to be the most flexible. This results from the fact, that we have some components foo-restricted and foo-private that musn't be available to all pcs and therefore musn't be in the public repository. Currently I'm using a Log: script that scans the component name and starts a reprepro remove for packages with the wrong component, which isn't too elegant. Another possible workaround is to actually have such a component and make the pool/evilcomponent and dists/*/evilcomponenent directories not accessible for the webserver. Also ugly but in another way... Yes, both are not really clean. Schöne Grüße Moritz Augsburger signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#423457: wakeonlan: extract MAC from IPv6 address
hi! this is about the common way of autoconfiguring IPv6 addresses by creating the host-specific interface identifier (the lower 64 bits of the address)from the Ethernet address of the host. This can indeed be reversed, so the request makes sense. That's right. But I think the question is if that is always possible. The interface doesn't necessarily have to be autoconfigured. Maybe we can think of a way to handle this cases. regards Thomas Prochaska -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#497638: dirmngr: initscript kills itself for action restart
Package: dirmngr Version: 1.0.1-3 Severity: important Although this appears similar to bug #495437, initscript kills itself for action stop, I think it may have a different cause so I have opened it as a distinct bug. The problem seems to be that start-stop-daemon is invoked (via lsb-base killproc function) without reference to the pid. Start-stop-daemon normally detects this and does not kill itself, but the restart action invokes a recursive call of the initscript - which then gets killed because killproc is defaulting to kill on --name dirmngr. This is the reason why logrotate fails with the following error. The dirmngr postrotate includes a call to the initscript with try-restart : /etc/cron.daily/logrotate: /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d: line 446: 26551 Terminated ${INITDPREFIX}${INITSCRIPTID} ${saction} $@ error: error running postrotate script for /var/log/dirmngr.log run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1 Although I've read the history of #495437 I am not sure of the intended usage of killproc here, and it is possible the error still lies in lsb-base, so I haven't ventured a patch for this problem. Bug#497642: aptitude: Allow user to add a note (a small text) to individual packages
Package: aptitude Version: 0.4.11.8-1 Severity: wishlist Hi. I want to suggest the following feature to aptitude: Allow one user to add a small string of text (one line should suffice) as a note to each package. Optionally, it would be great to be able to use the search system to look for packages that match a certain string in its note field. The example use cases are the following: * Alice is a power user who from to time wants to compile her favourite desktop environment when still is in beta stage. For that, she needs to install some development packages that normally she doesn't have installed. When she upgrades the whole system, she sees some packages that look unfamiliar to her, and doesn't remember why she installed them. She wants to add a note to herself like installed to compile FooBar 2000. * Bob and Charlie share a machine that acts as their email and web server. They install from to time to time a package to do some tests, or to run some web application. Bob installs MediaWiki, and the math plugin requires TeX. Since TeX is not a common package for a server, adds a note to Charlie stating Required for MediaWiki's math plugin, don't remove. This wish is a bit related to the old #149311, but I think that my suggestion is a bit simpler to implement, without using tasks (another line in pkgstates should be enough, I think). Thanks a lot in advance. -- Package-specific info: aptitude 0.4.11.8 compilado en Jul 4 2008 17:26:43 Compilador: g++ 4.3.1 Compiled against: apt version 4.6.0 NCurses version 5.6 libsigc++ version: 2.0.18 Ept support enabled. Bug#497204: hmm
tag 497204 + moreinfo thanks Hi, I installed the report builder, but it didn't show up in ooo base. I tried But unopkg (aka the package postinst)worked? to register it manually, but without success. However, when I upgraded What did you do? ooo-java-common to 1:3.0.0~ooo300m3-3, it started working. Therefore, the dependency on ooo-java-common should be adjusted to =1:3.0.0, IMHO. Hrm. The point is, the report-builder itself claims to work with OOo starting from 2.4 onwards. That means it should support -report-builder-bin and whatever rest being 2.4.1-8. But here, you seem to have parts of 3.0 installed (binaries) and parts of 2.4.1-8 (-java-common). And then the 2.4.1-8 -report-builder-bin. Hmm. I wonder how to resolve that, because as said the SRB is supposed to also work with a clean 2.4.1 (that was the whole point of the -report-builder-bin splitout in 2.4.1-7) so I do not want to add a stricter depends or conflict against older OOos. (at least not in -report-builder(-bin) itself; maybe in -core or so) Regards, Rene -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#497313: [Splashy-devel] Bug#497313: Bug#497313: splashy: deb hooks don't rebuild initramfs for all installed kernels
Mark Hedges schreef: 1) When I installed splashy with apt-get I was running my custom kernel. When I removed splashy I was running the stock kernel, but it rebuilt initramfs for the custom kernel. So it did not by default only rebuild the initramfs of the current kernel. You're right. It is not updating the initramfs of the current kernel (the one you are running), but it is updating the initramfs of a kernel which is sorted as highest by some algorithm I do not remember the details of. What is most important is that it will always be the same kernel, whatever one you are running at the moment. I think the sorting is such that under normal circumstances (as in: you just track the debian kernels) it will update the newest kernel. 2) What happens if I rebuilt the initramfs of kernel A to include splashy, but then I boot kernel B and remove the splashy package, then reboot to kernel A? Won't the kernel load the boot screen that was included? But I've removed it so what will happen after switching root? If you boot an initramfs with splashy included while it is removed from the root system, splashy will be started from initramfs as usual. The process will probably just survive the root-switching. There will however not be a splashy-update command on the root file system, so the progress bar will not be updated. Splashy will however timeout at some point. You will also still be able to kill splashy manually. So nothing dramatic will happen. You can also change the kernel command-line from grub and add nosplash to supress splashy. I think there should be a splashy update that wraps update-initramfs (or yaird or whatever you have selected) and keeps track of which kernels have splashy installed. That sounds much to fragile. Then `splashy_config -s theme` can call that automatically. (That was something that took me a while to figure out that I needed to do BTW.) [ this is not relevant for the current discussion, but it is probably a good idea to let splashy_config rebuild the initramfs as if it were a package update] As I explained before it was agreed under all maintainers supplying initramfs additions that rebuilding more than one initramfs on upgrades/removals is not going to happen by default. This is what was the concensus. Also `normal' users will find their system working as usual. It will only give (minor) problems if you start installing custom kernels. As I said, there is the possibility to configure initramfs-tools to rebuild all initramfses on removal, why isn't that a solution for your use case? How about: This is a convenience meta-package to install proftpd-basic and all modules needed for advanced features. It can savely be removed without rendering proftpd non-funcional. It is commonly used as such in many other cases. And if an admin is not able to manage such things, well it is better for the world if he moves to go fishing or so. After all, they read the documentation when originally installing proftpd, but probably not when upgrading. (I do not read all package descriptions on upgrade.) [Noel David Torres Taño] I readed all the headlines that reportbug showed me and didn't saw that, but I'm happy it's a known issue being worked on and am sad that it is a nearly unresolvable issue at today's date. The boot system need a radical change to work better with the new event based and async kernel, and this issue is one of many problems related to the async events. What about this? If all you want is to add sleep 5 in your boot sequence, you do not have to edit checkfs.sh to do it. Just add a new init.d script doing the 'sleep 5', and symlink it in at the correct location in /etc/rcS.d/ (ie before checkfs.sh). Bug#486136: [epiphany-browser] Epiphany crashes with password manager
reopen 494348 found 494348 2.22.3-3 merge 494348 486136 thanks Package: epiphany-browser Version: 2.22.3-3 I believe the bugs #486136 (crash on password manager) and #494348 (doesn't remember password) are the same. Bug#497375: [evince] Form input not visible after leaving editing mode
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi. Sven Arvidsson, 02.09.2008 15:04: On Mon, 2008-09-01 at 11:55 +0200, Mathias Brodala wrote: Editing PDF documents with forms works fine, but I am not able to see the text I entered into form fields after leaving the editing mode. However, this worked just fine before. I think this is related to the latest version of libpoppler (0.8.6-1) but I was not able to verify this since the previous version (0.8.5-1) ist not available anywhere anymore. (Not even on snapshot.debian.net which, in fact, was very outdated.) The version from Testing makes Evince die with a Segfault. Hi, I can confirm that poppler 0.8.4 works fine with forms. The regression has been confirmed and fixed, there's already a new release out with the fix, 0.8.7 :) http://poppler.freedesktop.org/poppler-0.8.7.tar.gz Hm, I cannot confirm this issue to be fixed. Admitted, I just replaced the poppler_0.8.6.orig.tar.gz with the archive above and recompiled the package, but the input is still not visible after leaving the form field. (I couldn’t wait because I need this feature really much ATM.) Bug#497653: dh_auto_configure, Perl XS modules and DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt
Package: debhelper Version: 7.0.17 The dh_auto_configure and/or dh_auto_build scripts don't currently support DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt (policy 4.9.1) with Perl XS modules. Neither Makefile.PL nor Build.PL build systems look at CFLAGS (set by at least dpkg-buildpackage), so they need special treatment. The XS templates in dh-make-perl 0.48 have this: $(PERL) Makefile.PL INSTALLDIRS=vendor $(MAKE) OPTIMIZE=$(CFLAGS) LD_RUN_PATH= $(PERL) Build.PL installdirs=vendor config=optimize=$(CFLAGS) OPTIMIZE=$(CFLAGS) $(PERL) Build but based on my tests with liblocale-gettext-perl and libauthen-dechpwd-perl, these would also do: $(PERL) Makefile.PL INSTALLDIRS=vendor OPTIMIZE=$(CFLAGS) $(MAKE) LD_RUN_PATH= $(PERL) Build.PL installdirs=vendor config=optimize=$(CFLAGS) $(PERL) Build which would mean just dh_auto_configure needs changing. -- Niko Tyni [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
