Bug#512337: linux-2.6: One GNU libc test fails on a Xen kernel
Thinking about this I now remember that the -ve segment fixups are actually done by the hypervisor not the kernel. Could you reassign this bug to the correct version of the hypervisor please. Is the dom0 running Etch also? It would be worth trying the Lenny hypervisor. I can't reproduce any issue running nptl/tst-tls4 from the 2.7-18 glibc tree in a guest running the Etch kernel and Sid userspace on a Sid hypervisor. Oh wait, I'm running a 64 bit hypervisor which won't need these fixups, nevermind... I'll try and dig up another box to test on but that might me a bit. Ian. -- Ian Campbell QOTD: Who? Me? However, you would need to rebuild the Debian source package against the Build-Depends from Lenny, because experimental has the next X server core instead. I have compiled the geode driver from experimental, and it works. But only when I do xrandr -o left. If I add Option Rotate Left in my xorg.conf, nothing happens - screen is not rotated at all. Bug#512311: korganizer should depend on akonadi-server

Otherwise, resources (phonebook etc) can't be imported into akonadi and used. This renders at least the calendar unusable. I am not sure I understand this correctly, but Akonadi does not need KOrganizer to read PIM data, its resource agents (Akonadi Resources) can do this on their own. The other way around, KOrganizer can and will for most people still use its traditional access methods to get to the data, i.e. KResource plugins such as local file. Bug#506303: Patch to read supplementary groups
I'm trying to debug status2proc() function but I'm not able to find input options to force this function to execute. I would say you're not using gdb correctly. Correct, I had a problem with ldconfig. Thanks very much for your help. Not simple, if anyone reading this actually understands gperf (or wants to) they can have a crack at it. I can write the code that then copies the value in the status file and fiddles with the ps flags but that hashing has got me stuck. I wrote the code to modify hash function and read the new field Groups:. I'm sending the patch. Some comments: 1.- The number of supplementary groups depends on the process. The field of proc_t to save them can be managed with static or dynamic memory. I thought time and simplicity is more important than memory so I chose to manage it statically. I can modify it if you think it is not suitable. 2.- Related to point 1. I chose 32 as maximum number of supplementary groups. In my desktop computer the max I found was 16 but I don't know whether 32 is enough in most cases. 3.- I create a field in proc_t to save the number of supplementary groups. I initialize it to 0 into status2proc function. Should it be necessary initialize it in other places or status2proc is visited for all processes ? Bug#512386: laptop-mode-tools=Fails to reapply hard disk settings after a resume from hibernation
Package: laptop-mode-tools Version: 1.45-1 Severity: grave After doing a resume from suspend the laptop-mode settings that affect the hard disk power management are not applied. On a fresh start everything is perfect, but after a resume from hibernation, if the fans don't spin, I can hear small clic sounds from the hdd (presumably). They are perfectly correlated with the increase of the 193 Load_Cycle_Count value in the smartcl status. The load/unload cycles are extremely frequent, more than 200 per hour. Marking it as grave, it can shorten the life of the hdd a lot. In the extreme case of 200 cycles per hour I would be left with 60 / 200 = 3000 expected hours of functioning, less than a year. Doing a /etc/init.d/laptop-mode restart instantly solves the clicking. Running Debian Unstable, updated recently. Bug#512388: fbi: order of j/k keys should be reversed (and the should be documented in man page)
Package: fbi Version: 2.07-1 Severity: minor I discovered by accident that the `j' and `k' keys can be used as alternatives to `PgUp' and `PgDn'. But their function should be switched. Currently `j' (means `down' in vi) decreases the number of the displayed image, but this means going backward. However `j' should go foreward. `PgDn' in constrast does it right as it increases the number of displayed picture, thus goes foreward. I recommend to exchange the function of `j' and `k', to receive a more natural/expected control. Additionally the keys should be documented in the man page. meillo P.S. Bug#512387: fbi: fbgs -a: switch to next page while zoomed
Package: fbi Version: 2.07-1 Severity: normal When `fbgs -a file.ps' is started and one page is zoomed then (using `+') it is not possible to go to the next page (`PgUp'/`PgDn') anymore. (Except I'm at the very bottom of the page and want to go forward, or I'm at the very top of the page and want to go backward.) The problem does not exist if `fbgs' was called without the `-a' option. What IMO should be possible: - call with `-a' - zoom that page in - switch to next page (using PgDn) - zoom that page in too - switch back and forth using PgUp/PgDn This is extremely useful for working in a text section that spans two pages. meillo -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686-bigmem (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages fbi depends on: ii ghostscript8.63.dfsg.1-2 The GPL Ghostscript PostScript/PDF ii libc6 2.7-18GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcurl3-gnutls7.18.2-8 Multi-protocol file transfer libra ii libexif12 0.6.16-2.1library to parse EXIF files ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-3 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.3.7-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgif44.1.6-6 library for GIF images (library) ii libjpeg62 6b-14 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libpcd21.0.1-1 A library for reading PhotoCD imag ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-2 PNG library - runtime ii libtiff4 3.8.2-11 Tag Image File Format (TIFF) libra ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime fbi recommends no packages. Bug#512389: blosxom: preinst quite slow due to repeated dpkg-query runs
Package: blosxom Version: 2.1.2-1 Severity: wishlist During the upgrade from etch to lenny, I noticed that blosxom's preinst took quite some time. This machine is not really terribly quick, and dpkg-query takes a few seconds to run each time. Rather than calling it fifteen times for each of fifteen different configuration files, perhaps you could save the output of dpkg-query -W -f='${Conffiles}' blosxom in a shell variable, and then just repeatedly run sed over that shell variable? That should be a lot faster. (Yes, I know that the rm_conffile function is just the usual one that people copy around from package to package. It should be OK to modify it, though; I did essentially what I'm suggesting above in openssh.) Bug#512391: amarok: OSD goes to background in fvwm2 after using menues
Package: amarok Version: 1.4.10-2 Severity: normal The OSD becomes effectively invisible (==useless) because it is switched to a layer behind all other windows. I am filing this bug against amarok and not fvwm2, because the OSD starts out as always-on-top and only switches to a always-on-bottom mode after using the amarok menues (amarok triggers the switch). Running amarok with openbox did not show the same behavior, so the bug might also be in fvwm2. To reproduce: use fvwm2 as WM, open amarok and play songs (change OSD duration to a longer timespan, then quit and restart amarok to see when exectly the OSD disappeares). Now open one of the menues (e.g. settings-configure amarok or right-click a song on the playlist and select set track information) - close this window again by clicking e.g. cancel and open it a second time. The moment the second menu window opens, the OSD is transferred to the background, behind all other windows. I confirmed this behavior with a fresh user without previous fvwm2 or amarok configurations. Bug#510330: libm17n-dev should not ship .la files

I feel this is a problem when I make the package of ibus-m17n[1], which introduce extra libthai depends when building. after a quick review, I think this is a problem of the .la files in libm17n-dev, so I report a bug here. Bug#512369: fails to configure when an IMAP server is not available
Hi Niko, Setting up imapproxy (1.2.6-4) ... Starting IMAP proxy: invoke-rc.d: initscript imapproxy, action start failed. dpkg: error processing imapproxy (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 I'd expect retrying in the background or even leaving it disabled, but postinst failure seems too intrusive. Well, you supplied it with localhost as the IMAP server name, or installed it with a too high debconf priority and thus implicitly accepted this setting: -- debconf information: imapproxy/imap-server: localhost It is customary for Debian packages to start a service right after installation. In fact, the code that does this in the imapproxy package is inserted by debhelper. So the same things happens in all packages that use debhelper to take care of init script installation and encounter some kind of configuration that is not compatible with the local situation. I think that it's logical that a service that can't be started after installation causes the installation to give an error. You are then given the option to correct the situation and finish the installation later. If you think services should not be started after installation, or that if such a service errors installation should be continued regardless, I think you should reassign the bug to debhelper. I'm not sure what should be changed on the imapproxy package since 'localhost' seems like a sensible default for me if the user skips the debconf questions, and I do not know of a better default that would solve your problem. cheers, Thijs -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#512397: wide-dhcpv6-server: fails to disconnect from debconf, hanging postinst
Package: wide-dhcpv6-server Version: 20080615-1 Severity: grave Justification: breaks upgrades On startup, dhcp6s does not close any stray file descriptors it may have inherited. When called from wide-dhcpv6-server.postinst, this includes fd 3, which is a pipe to debconf. The result of this is a hang on upgrade, with a process tree looking like this: 1511 pts/8Ss+0:30 \_ /usr/bin/dpkg --admindir=/var/lib/dpkg --status-fd 20 --configure libiw29 wireless-tools imagemagick libmagick++10 libplot2c2 libpstoedit0c2a ldap-utils li 22001 pts/8S+ 0:04 \_ /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend /var/lib/dpkg/info/wide-dhcpv6-server.postinst configure 20061016-2 22009 pts/8Z+ 0:00 \_ [wide-dhcpv6-ser] defunct 22031 ?Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/dhcp6s -k /dev/null -P /var/run/dhcp6s.eth1.pid eth1 I can tell that the pipe to debconf is still open: $ sudo lsof -p 22001 | grep 'pipe$' frontend 22001 root7w FIFO0,6 29433263 pipe frontend 22001 root8r FIFO0,6 29433264 pipe $ sudo lsof -p 22031 | grep 'pipe$' dhcp6s 22031 root3w FIFO0,6 29433264 pipe wide-dhcpv6-server's postinst attempts to work around this problem by calling db_stop to let debconf know that it's finished. However, it only calls it if /etc/default/wide-dhcpv6-server does not exist, whereas it sources the confmodule unconditionally (usually a good idea anyway since sourcing the confmodule has weird semantics, re-execing the sourcing script), so unless I'm much mistaken it seems that it will always fail to upgrade. Calling db_stop is at best an ugly workaround anyway. Rather than calling db_stop, I would recommend that you make dhcp6s close all its inherited file descriptors on startup. The usual idiom for this is something like this (and no, as far as I know there is nothing neater): int fd; for (fd = 3; fd 1024; ++fd) close(fd); The daemon(0, 0) call that dhcp6s already makes will take care of file descriptors 0, 1, and 2. For anyone affected by this, a workaround to allow the upgrade to proceed without inconvenient dpkg errors is to run '/etc/init.d/wide-dhcpv6-server restart' from a separate shell. Funny, I had a similar bug with openoffice on one install which I did not report (lack of time and foggy memory), the directory ~/.openoffice.org2 was owned by root. Openoffice opened, but then was unable to open files because it could not access the directory (complained about something to do with languages as I recall). I do not know if the bugs are related.
Bug#512398: debian-installer: Debian Install CD should have an skip CD-boot option as for example in SuSE
Package: debian-installer Version: 20081029 and others Severity: wishlist Hi debian-installer Maintainers, It would be great to have an option to skip the CD boot integrated - `Boot from hard disk` As working for an ISP I often have to go down to the BIOS and change the boot order with an Debian GNU/Linux CD in drive in a Lights Out Environment. I'm unsure if a 60 sec timeout to boot from harddisk as in SuSE may be cool, but at least an option to do this would be a great comfort. retitle 511708 aptitude: TUI blocks after doing one set of operations (only with etch kernel) thanks 2009/1/19 Daniel Burrows dburr...@debian.org: On Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 05:28:27PM +0200, Eddy Petrișor eddy.petri...@gmail.com was heard to say: Package: aptitude found 511708 0.4.11-2 thanks I managed to install 0.4.11-2 with its dependent libcwidget1 and saw the bug was present in that version, too. Huh. I've had a report from another user that the bug *doesn't* happen for them in 0.4.11. That probably means it's even more sporadic than I thought. I think I have found a lead after reading a comment from another user: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=504063#17 I installed lenny's kernel and with this kernel the bug is no longer visible with the new version. twix:/home/eddy# uname -a Linux twix 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Sat Jan 10 18:29:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux I'll reboot and try again the etch kernel. Bug#512221: please add a symbols file to gpgme
I just want to add that an important reason for having such a symbols file is that currently libgpgme11 would currently block a new reprepro version to migrate to lenny and makes it necessary to recompile the experimental packages to use them on lenny. With this symbol file, having a new upstream release of libgpgme11 in unstable would no longer be an issue, at least for that package (and I guess most others, too, as all features that make it still depend on 1.1.8 are relatively new). Bug#483643: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#483643: problem with tmpfs
I can't find any information about the way tmpfs_size is calculated, but on two boxes, it is the half of system memory. The kernel uses half the memory by default. A different size can be specified at mount time. The problem is that on one I get /lib/init/rw and /dev/shm sized to 1.8 Gbytes and the other sized to 500 Mbytes, which seems to be very very much just to keep a few Kbytes. The capasity of a tmpfs is not the amount memory used by it. The memory used by a tmpfs is the amount stored on the file system. So neither 1.8 GB nor 600 MB is used to keep the few kilobytes. Only the few kilobytes is spent. Happy hacking, -- Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#512401: general: Java, Tk and Tkinter applications broken in Metacity window manager
Package: general Severity: important Applications implemented in Java, in Tcl/Tk and in Python using Tkinter fail to raise their own toplevel windows when working under the Metacity window manager. This is the case with gpsman and the practical result is that part of its functionality is broken (e.g., buttons that do nothing) and users can be unaware of new toplevels that are created under existing windows and are not visible by failing to be raised. You can retrieve small tests in Java, Tcl/Tk and Python from http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/tmp/Controller.java http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/tmp/Raisewindow.java [compile and run with: javac Controller.java ; java Controller] http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/tmp/testraise.tcl [run with: wish testraise.tcl] http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/tmp/testraise.py [run with: python testraise.py] These tests create 3 windows each with two buttons for raising the other two using the standard ways: tofront method in Java, raise command in Tcl/Tk, tk_raise method in Python+Tkinter. To reproduce the bug, run each program under Metacity, move the windows so that they partially overlap the others and then try to use the buttons. The Java program only changes the focus, while the other two programs do nothing at all. Under other window managers (kwin, sawfish, wmaker, fvwm2) all of them work as expected. I submitted a bug report to Bugzilla http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=567528 but the last answer to it was that I should file a bug with the language developers as they need to provide a way to send _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW (and with a correct timestamp!) when trying to bring this window to user's attention. As Metacity is used by default in many Debian distributions this problem is likely to severely affect many applications. Well, you supplied it with localhost as the IMAP server name, or installed it with a too high debconf priority and thus implicitly accepted this setting: Yes. Possibly the medium priority is too low, but that's fine tuning. So the same things happens in all packages that use debhelper to take care of init script installation and encounter some kind of configuration that is not compatible with the local situation. It could be a remote situation as well if it's not 'localhost': network outage, remote server downtime etc. I think that it's logical that a service that can't be started after installation causes the installation to give an error. You are then given the option to correct the situation and finish the installation later. The keyword for me here is 'proxy'. I think a proxy should be able to start even when the remote server is (possibly temporarily) unavailable. Just issuing a warning at startup would be fine. If the server refuses the connection, so should the proxy. But OK, I can see this probably shouldn't be RC. I added to this bug because he seemed to be experiencing the same problem I was, and I didn't pay enough attention to what version he reported running, apologies. However I determined on my end the problem in question was cache query rejections specifically. I was not aware of the allow-query-cache configuration option's changed behavior between 9.3 and 9.4 (or in my case, 9.5). Adding it explicitly to my configuration has since solved my problem.
