Bug#513720: [mbr] Fails to boot the first partition?

I installed mbr and d-i on a USB memory stick which contains a single
partition, a primary 2 GB FAT16. On 3 PC-s, the memory stick works as
expected. On the oldest PC I have, an ECS K7S5A, I got the key to load
MBR after a few hours of struggling, but I can't do anything past loading
  mbr. The boot prompt shows
  1FA:

but pressing 1 has no effect. FWIW, pressing F prints the prompt again.
In advanced mode, I can boot GRUB, which is installed on the HDD.

Ummm, that would be really weird, how do you boot grub from the HDD using
the advanced mode? I mean, what keys do you press?
In advanced mode, the prompt becomes
1234F:
and I can boot GRUB using 2, 3 and 4.

It seems like mbr fails to load the first partition.

Well... I'd like to know what is on your HDD (where is that grub installed,
partition table? that would be hd0) and what boot program do you have on
the primary partition of the USB (I mean, what's on the FAT mbr that our
 mbr is supposed to call?)
The HDD (hd0) contains several partitions including a Windows installation and
several Debian installations. GRUB was installed by d-i in the usual way,
which is in the MBR unless I'm mistaken.

I don't know what boot program is on the flash drive's partition. Could that
be syslinux? The memory stick I used came with a FAT16 partition which I
didn't touch. I created the stick following section 4.3.2.1. Partitioning the
USB stick of lenny's installation guide.

http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s03.html#usb-copy-flexible

I did not use mkdosfs (though I could easily try recreating the partition with
it if that's what determines what's in the FAT's MBR).

Any other info you can give us?
Anything you want. Something I omitted to mention initially is that the ECS
K7S5A is a pre-2003 motherboard, which is in the beginning of advanced boot
possibilities. I guess that once mbr has started, this is irrelevant, but I
don't know. Setting the BIOS to boot from USB HDD won't work, I had to set it
to boot from USB FDD.

Bug#513786: gnome-panel: Window List broken in Vertical Panels Less Than 30 Pixels Wide

2009-02-01 Thread jsf
Package: gnome-panel
Version: 2.20.3-5
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

If the panel is placed in a vertical position, on the side of the
screen, and the panel width is less than 30 pixels, the window list
buttons display no useable information. The only thing that appears are
two dots .., which makes every button appear the same. Hence you have
no idea which button coordinates to which open window, rendering the
window list completely useless. Ideally, in this circumstance icons
would appear and the text in the buttons would reorient vertically.

This is a known bug in Gnome that has existed for years and never been
addressed. See:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86382

There are also other problems with how the window list performs in a
vertical panel that is wider than 30 pixels (also described in the above
Gnome bug report).

So, what's the status of this package?

Unchanged. Anyway, this isn’t urgent at the moment, as trang is not in

Bug#513688: [Pkg-nagios-devel] Bug#513688: /usr/share/nagios-plugins/templates-standard/nt.cfg is missing information

2009-02-01 Thread David Perfors
Hi Jan,

Thanks for the tip, that is a possibility, but when someone is
following the documentation it is confusing that it doesn't work like
they say:

Add the following service definition to monitor the CPU utilization
on the Windows server and generate a CRITICAL alert if the 5-minute
CPU load is 90% or more or a WARNING alert if the 5-minute load is 80%
or greater.

define service{
use generic-service
host_name winserver
service_description CPU Load
check_command check_nt!CPULOAD!-l 5,80,90
}

It is confusing and it took me some time to find out what the problem
was. Someone who doesn't know much about linux and just want to get
nagios running will have a hard time when things are not working like
documented.

Greetings,

David

the CPULOAD is inserted (the $ARGS1$) and the second argument is not

what about using 'check_nt!CPULOAD -l 5,80,90' in your service check?

 The following should work:

 define service {
 host_name frame
 service_description LOAD
 check_command check_nt!CPULOAD -l 5,80,90
 use generic-service
 }

I double checked it, and the following works just fine here:

 define service {
 host_name frame
 service_description LOAD
 check_command check_nt!'CPULOAD -l 5,50,80'
 use generic-service
 }

 With kind regards, Jan.

2009-02-01 Thread Adeodato Simó
* Vincent Fourmond [Sun, 01 Feb 2009 00:00:24 +0100]:

   Hello,

Would you please unblock wordtrans 1.1pre15-3.2 ? It fixes a RC bug
(#512486) in testing and several other problems, such as:

   * the package was made binNMU-safe;
   * many lintian warnings were cleared;
   * the menu files were adapted to the new menu policy.

Heh, just unblocked it without having seen this mail. Unblocked.

Bug#513751: debian-installer: lenny install - gnome-audio package is not installed by default

2009-02-01 Thread Christian Perrier
reassign 513751 gnome-desktop-environmnt
thanks

Quoting George Kirkham (kirk...@internode.on.net):
 Stefano,

The package gnome-desktop-environment only Suggests: gnome-audio,
and so will not install gnome-audio by default during the debian lenny
 install.

Would I be correct in saying that the debian-installer would have to be
configured to include gnome-audio for it to be installed. Having
gnome-audio installed as part or the debian lenny installation would
seem to be a logical to me.

Working around other packages' dependencies is not Debian Installer's
job.

I suppose that Debian GNOME maintainers pondered very carefully the
dependencies of gnome-desktop-environment and, if they did put
gnome-audio as a Suggests only, they probably have good reasons.

So, maybe you want to talk about this with them but that bug can't be
dealt with on D-I side.

Bug#512089: annoying portmap conflict

2009-02-01 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Hi Cristoph

I'll think about your comments. The problem is that there are other software
packages that do similar things. I'm not so sure that this should be the scope
of harden-servers, even though I think it is a very good thing.

Best regards,

// Ola

Yes I know that this one is annoying and I know that you can configure

you will get a more hardened system without the need to make special

 My idea is the following:
Even on servers it is nowadays not so uncommon that you have fam running
 and on desktops anyway.
A user probably have set up portmap correctly, but still cannot install
 harden-servers.
While portmap will stay in secure/loopback-only mode, harden-servers
 will stay uninstalled.
And thus the user might easily install one of the other packages that
harden-servers conflicts with, and which is really an evil package.

You see both ways have their disadvantage, but personally I'd consider
it better not to conflict with portmap and let the user install it in
order to secure him from the other packages and solve the portmap
 problem like described below:

However I appriciate your feedback on this and if I or someone else find a
very good solution to this, I will happily apply a good patch.
Well the only way I can think of right now is, that package adds some
test to debconf that checks whether portmap is bound to the loopback
 device.
Such a test might be even added as cronjob (perhaps weekly or even
daily) in order to notify the user when he installs portmap after
harden-servers or later changes the portmap config.
If that cronjob finds a non-loopback setting it might even deactivate
 portmap.

 Thanks,
 Chris.

wishlist bug to have mount.cifs implement a simpler syntax for achieving

 http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewvc/devel/xorg-x11-server/xserver-1.5.0-force-SwitchCoreKeyboard-for-evdev.patch?revision=1.1

Yes the patch was pending for the next upload of Xserver 1.5.3,

the patch has never actually been uploaded. And it's not in our

xbacklight -set sometimes has no effect. For example, when I suspend and
resume my laptop, the backlight is reset to 100%, but is still reported
as whatever I set it to before. xbacklight seems to do nothing if I try
to set it to the same value; instead, I must first set it to a different
value.

It may be a bug in the driver. If the driver doesn't reset its backlight
value on suspend/resume, xbacklight will read a wrong value from it, and
thus do nothing if the set the same value.

Did you actually ever observe the bug when not resuming from suspend?

No. I'm not sure how I would set up an equivalent circumstance, i.e. change
the backlight without running xbacklight. For example, the Fn keys for
changing the brightness on my Samsung NC-10 do not currently work.

Which driver do you use?

Bug#513793: amarok 2 (experimental) dependency problem? (amarok-engine-xine)

2009-02-01 Thread Alan Braslau
Package: amarok
Version: 2.0.1.1-1
Severity: normal

After upgrade from 1.4.10 to 2.0.1, I discovered the strange behavior
that amarok skipped tracks, playing thus every other track.
On the amarok.kde.org forum I saw that this is related to xine -
but my system was indeed correctly configured to use the xine engine.
I did notice, however, that the package amarok-engine-xine, version 1.4.10
remained installed. So I tried removing this, and, after restarting amarok,
all tracks are now played correctly.
It would appear that there may have been some interference with this old
package left around, so the bug to report is most likely a simple problem
of dependencies for the new amarok 2.0 experimental package.

Beware, however, as kdelibs5 was also upgraded at the same time,
and I do not know what influence this may have had on my experience...

Thank you! (and bravo to everyone for KDE 4.2)

2009-02-01 Thread Iain Lane
Hello maintainer,

You have had an open Mono 2.0 transition bug for over 1 month now. Are
you still intending on maintaining the package? If not, we
(pkg-cli-apps) intend to adopt. Any updates will be prepared in
pkg-cli-apps SVN.

If you wish to join the team, we will be happy to welcome you and your
package(s) :).

Bug#509966: x11-xserver-utils: iceauth fails with non-ASCII characters in hostname

2009-02-01 Thread Brice Goglin
Robert Edmonds wrote:

if the system's hostname contains non-ASCII characters, iceauth will
fail, typically with something like 'bad add command line'. please
apply the attached patch, which removes the extraneous isascii() check
 in the skip_nonspace() function.

Out of curiosity (before I consider sending the patch upstream), what
kind of non-ascii characters are your thinking about?

not sure, I checked only after noticing a glitch in an app. supposed to
take advantage from dri, and - as reported - it does work on first
wdm start - wm session open, but then it breaks on next
wm close - wdm - wm session open.
I've got same system but on other hw, with radeon, which afaikt didn't
show such problem, so far.

Any chance you upgrade your Mesa packages to something more recent? Mesa
6.5.1 is very old, we have 7.0.4 in testing/unstable and 7.3 in
 experimental...

yes, if there are bpo .debs for etch, else I'm afraid I'd wait till next
testing-stable cycle.

thanks

I´m able to reproduce the bug with different snapshot of the driver:
 git20080827.38aa450f
 git20081129.783cdb73
 git20081214.f9826a56

With all of them my system hangs. However i can access via
 ssh and reboot it manually.

Upgrading to experimental/downgrading to unstable gives the same results.
 Playng with EXA-XAA changes nothing.

I should add that i can observe all symptoms from
 #490071, #479870, #462590, #461580(except ssh).

Your X seems to be using AGPMode 8. Maybe this mode isn't actually good
for your box. Can you try AGPMode 1, 2, 4 instead? Or even add Option
BusType PCI?

Bug#498800: upgrade of aptitude before?

2009-02-01 Thread Wolf Wiegand
Hi,

this problem still exists when following the current version of the release
notes - when issuing the final 'aptitude dist-upgrade' mentioned in
point 4.5.8 of the RL, xserver-xorg-video-* will be removed.

I've attached the output from 'aptitude -s dist-upgrade' at that point,
together with the output from 'apt-get -s dist-upgrade'.

Cheers,

Wolf

Bug#509307: xbacklight: -set does nothing if it thinks the setting is already correct

2009-02-01 Thread Brice Goglin
Reuben Thomas wrote:
 Package: xbacklight
 Severity: normal

xbacklight -set sometimes has no effect.

Which driver do you use? Can you try the latest driver from experimental
and a recent kernel?

Brice

Bug#513813: python-kde4-dev: Generated file needs an extra line for UTF-8 encoding

2009-02-01 Thread Stefanos Harhalakis
Package: python-kde4-dev
Version: 4:4.2.0-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Using the pykdeuic4 the generated python script doesn't contain a coding
header. When someone uses unicode characters 127 at the qt-designer the
generated python code contains them as-is. This makes it an invalid python
script. This is easily fixed by adding a one-line header at the python code.

The attached patch fixes this simple bug.

As a bonus it also fixes another problem: The generated file starts with an
empty line. This isn't proper for scripts starting with #!. The patch
also removes this extra line.

It appears here we are up to 2.0b4
http://www.turbogears.org/2.0/downloads/current/index/TurboGears2/TurboGears2-2.0b4.tar.gz

Maybe TurboGears wants to be more stable before getting in to Debian
Perhaps TurboGears just needs to be prompted to copy tar.gz files to
files.turbogears.org
Or the watch file needs to change to point to TurboGears2 location.

Bug#513796: php5-xapian: PHP license incompatible with Xapian

2009-02-01 Thread Sylvain Beucler
Package: php5-xapian
Version: 1.0.7-3.1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.3

The PHP license is incompatible with the GNU GPL license due to
strong restrictions on the usage of the term 'PHP'.

Thus combining PHP and Xapian through the php5-xapian module is
not permitted and cannot be redistributed.

This issue was raised upstream but hasn't been resolved (and
probably can't at their level):
http://trac.xapian.org/ticket/191

It would nice to:

- check with debian-legal to confirm

- contact the PHP community so they convert these naming
restrictions into a proper trademark, making the copyright
license GPL-compatible (like other scripting languages)

retitle 513769 should provide debconf templates to generate lircd.conf

Hello,

The Eclectic One, le Sun 01 Feb 2009 02:10:57 +, a écrit :
It seems counter-intuitive that configuring the package doesn't
 actually do it.

That's however how a lot of packages work: you have to read the
documentation to know how to configure it (it even tells you where it
is :) ). That being said, the debian packaging could provide debconf
templates to build a lircd.conf file, changing the bug so.

Bug#513817: wpasupplicant: ad-hoc broken

2009-02-01 Thread Richard Scherping
Package: wpasupplicant
Version: 0.6.6-2
Severity: normal

I am trying to set up a WPA-enabled ad-hoc network between two Debian Lenny
boxes, one with rt73usb WiFi on 2.6.27.4, the other with iwl4965 on 2.6.28.

My wpa_supplicant config:

network={
 ssid=MySSID
 mode=1
 proto=WPA
 key_mgmt=WPA-NONE
 pairwise=NONE
 group=TKIP
 psk=MyPSK
}

Although I specified mode=1, wpa_supplicant sets the WiFi device to managed
mode and thus the connection does not work. This happens with both
wpasupplicant package 0.6.4 (lenny/sid) and 0.6.6 (experimental).

If there is any workaround, please tell me!

for unionfs-fuse 0.21-3 ? If yes, would you like me to sponsor you ?
(that would probably happen only tomorrow).

Hello again,

I just realized that I've been influenced by a wrong Xen tutorial.

When using the Xen hypervisor, one must replace the 'initrd' grub
keyword by the 'module' keyword.

That's all !

Sorry for the inconvenience if that change turn out to solve my problem.

I just tried on my amd64 again; I can reproduce it with 2.4.1-17 on amd64 but
(just for the record) not with 3.0.1-1...

I just started calc with an empty spreadsheet, selected sheet 2 (or 3) and it
crashed. This happens with version -16 too, but with -15 everything works
 fine.

Ah, at least someone who says this happened with -16 already...

I also noted that just downgrading the package openoffice.org-core to the -15
version is enough to get rid of the bug (you don't need to downgrade the
 openoffice.org-calc package).

OK, that's what I already guessed from the backtrace. (as a lib in -core
crashes)

Bug#513688: [Pkg-nagios-devel] Bug#513688: /usr/share/nagios-plugins/templates-standard/nt.cfg is missing information

2009-02-01 Thread Jan Wagner
Hi David,

On Sunday 01 February 2009 09:53, you wrote:
Thanks for the tip, that is a possibility, but when someone is
following the documentation it is confusing that it doesn't work like
 they say:

Add the following service definition to monitor the CPU utilization
on the Windows server and generate a CRITICAL alert if the 5-minute
CPU load is 90% or more or a WARNING alert if the 5-minute load is 80%
 or greater.

 define service{
   use generic-service
   host_name winserver
   service_description CPU Load
   check_command check_nt!CPULOAD!-l 5,80,90
   }

here I disagree with you. It's completly along with the documentation. Since
monitoring via nsclient seems not so common for users of our package, we are
using a highly abstracted command definition. The point is, how you
understand $ARGS1$, we understand is as the first string between the check
command (here check_nt) including the first ! and the next ! or end of
line (what comes first).
So you call here check_command check_command!$ARGS1$, which result
in my exmaple into the command line:

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nt -H '$HOSTADDRESS$' -v 'CPULOAD -l 5,80,90'

This is exactly what you want. I imply, that someone who is trying
such unconventional check, did also read the documentation[1] and
understand how argument macros works.

Anyways ... If you have a look at Password Protection on the page you
mentioned, you will see, that our check definition in most cases don't work.
There is used the default port (1248) of the plugin instead of the (actual)
default port of NSClient++, even the password isn't passed.
But this will not change, at least not so far in the future, because there may
many people, which configured nsclient to run on port 1248 and these checks
will break.
So feel free to create your own command definitions which are highly
customised to your own setup, I would recommand to place them in a seperate
config file anywhere in /etc/nagios[23]/conf.d/.

With kind regards, Jan.

Bug#513814: libmesh: debian/copyright and license problems

Package: libmesh
Version: 0.6.3.dfsg~rc1-1

debian/copyright doesn't contain the full text of the QPL, which

together with the original source code.

Bug#513803: opencity 0.0.6.1stable-1 uninstallable

2009-02-01 Thread Bernhard R. Link
Package: opencity
Version: 0.0.6.1stable-1

It says 'opencity-data (= ${source:Upstream-Version})' which I think can

This leads to the current experimental packages having:

 * dep: opencity-data (= 0.0.6.1stable)
which makes the package not even installable.

Disappointed,

Bug#513820: Proposal for a new 'needsponsor' tag

Package: debbugs
Version: 2.4.1
Severity: wishlist

  Hello,

While browsing for RC bugs to fix, I found that it is not easy to
find bugs which are fixed by the maintainer but in need of a
sponsor. What do you think about implementing a 'needsponsor' tag that
would precisely mean that ?

It could be a simple tag, or even a more complex object like the
'forwarded' system, where the maintainer could enter an URL for the
fixedpackage's .dsc file (for instance on mentors).

How do you like that ?

  Cheers,

Vincent

PS: I quickly browsed over bugs of debbugs and bugs.debian.org and I
couldn't find any title related to sponsor. I hope I didn't miss something.

Bug#513735: patch

2009-02-01 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Actually, this patch will not really fix anything, because the
ru_RU.KOI8-R locale needs to have been previously generated and
installed on the system, for this to work. Otherwise, declaring LANG
and LC_ALL (with or without the export statement) will always fall
back to the C locale that is the default on Debian's archive buildd
network.

The only way we could sort-of fix this would be to Build-Depends upon
locales-all to ensure that KOI8-R is always generated and installed
before we start the build. However, I don't like that solution,
because Debian derivatives such as Ubuntu don't offer that same
locales-all metapackage and I want to avoid forking the packaging.

Alternately, we could call 'locale-gen' in early building stages to
generate the locale, before we proceed with building the dictionaries.
However, I'm not sure how we'd delete the locale during cleanup after
the build process is complete.

Still, it puzzles me how we managed to build the package just fine
until recently without all that fuzz.

Martin-Éric

Bug#396458: Ma bonne foi

2009-02-01 Thread francoise colette

Bug#513815: grub: Cannot boot XEN Hypervisor + Linux : Error 19 or Error 20

2009-02-01 Thread Valentin QUEQUET
Package: grub
Version: 0.97-47lenny2
Severity: normal

Attached: my grub 'menu.lst' configuration file.

Hello the hurd,

Amongst others, I use the following Debian/Lenny packages:

grub 0.97-47lenny2
initramfs-tools 0.92o
libc6-xen 2.7-18
xen-linux-system-2.6.26-1-xen-686 2.6.26-13
linux-image-2.6.26-1-xen-686 2.6.26-13
linux-modules-2.6.26-1-xen-686 2.6.26-13
xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-i386 3.2.1-2
xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-i386-nonpae 3.2.1-2
xen-docs-3.2 3.2.1-2
xenstore-utils 3.2.1-2
libxenstore3.0 3.2.1-2
xen-utils-3.2-1 3.2.1-2
xen-utils-common 3.2.0-2
xenwatch 0.5.2-1
xen-shell 1.8-3
xen-tools 3.9-4

I have trouble booting linux-image-2.6.26-1-xen-686 :

Whichever the order of the different lines in grub configuration file
'menu.lst',
I fall in either of the two following traps:

Error 19: Linux kernel must be loaded before initrd

or:

Error 20: Multiboot kernel must be loaded before modules

Of course, when I speak about the 'order of the different lines in the
configuration file', I mean lines starting like this:

title Experiment...
root (hd0,3) # = /dev/hda2
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6...xen...
module /boot/vmlinuz-2.6...xen...
kernel /boot/xen-3... # PAE or Non-PAE

But of course I always start a configuration block with the 'title' line
just followed by the 'root' line.

Thus, it remains 3 lines of which the relative order might be erroneous:
the 'initrd', 'module', and 'kernel' lines.

Consequently, I have 6 ways to sort these 3 remaining lines.

But my 'Experiment' always fails to boot, whichever how I sort the 3
configuration lines 'initrd', 'module', and 'kernel'.

Furthermore, it always fails whether I use PAE or Non-PAE Xen Hypervisor.

Furthermore, it always fails whether I use default all gzipped images or
all uncompressed ones. (for Xen Hypervisor, Linux Kernel, and Linux Initrd)

Please, give me some hints of what's wrong on my system.

Thanks in advance.

In hope my report will prove useful.

Sincerely,
Valentin QUEQUET

So on a mere 'remove', the leftover configuration files on /etc order
php to load an extension that is no longer there.

Workaround is obvious, if you don't have any customization: just purge
the package rather than remove it.

Bug#291194: Raising severity

2009-02-01 Thread Raphael Hertzog
On Sat, 31 Jan 2009, Adrian Bunk wrote:
I just ran into this bug when using a modified tar that defaults to
 create posix archives:

The simple work-around is to modify dpkg-deb to create tar archives
used inside .deb with the option --format=gnu. Additionnaly, I think
we should remove TAR_OPTIONS from the environment.

Then the bug to support posix tar archive can again be wishlist.

That could be even be done for lenny.

Proposed patch is attached. I'd like to hear opinions
from release managers and from Guillem. I tested the patch and it seems to
work satisfactorily.

Note about the patch: it's on purpose that I didn't tag the error string for
translation, the error will never happen.

* dpkg-deb/build.c: Ensure that data.tar and control.tar

with dpkg itself. And remove TAR_OPTIONS from environment to

Bug#513752: Acknowledgement (debian-installer: lenny - System Sounds do not give sound, MP3 and CD do give sound.)

2009-02-01 Thread George Kirkham

I believe that this issue should be directed to another location.

While I have no idea why System Sounds works, I now believe that
a) a standard Debian Lenny install is installing OSS for sound, not
alsa. However what does gnome-audio require, oss or alsa ?
b) gnome-desktop-environment installs gstreamer0.10-alsa which
would indicate that gnome uses alsa.
c) does sun-java use oss or alsa ? sun-java works with standard
installation of lenny, but if I install libesd-alsa0 then gnome-audio
produces System Sounds but sun-java then does not.

I am not sure where this issue resides, I would suggest that in the
first place it would be gnome-desktop-environment .

Thanks,

George.

 Hi,

X has been crashing on me about once per day since upgrading to
 (debian lenny's) 2.6.26. I don't recall this happening on 2.6.25,
though I can confirm that if desired.

Note that I have since confirmed that it's not a kernel regression; it
does happen under 2.6.24 through 2.6.26.

When the X server crashes, the screen goes black, gdm attempts to
restart a few times (and fails), and I'm dumped back to console. I
then have to reboot in order to get a working X. This is on a
thinkpad x40 running lenny with gnome. I've attached the Xorg.log
and Xorg.log.old. Dmesg doesn't contain any useful information
 regarding the crash.

I would be more than happy to test patches.

I've tested newer intel drivers (2.5.x), and they crash as well.

Any news about this? Did you try Intel 2.6.1? a more recent kernel?

I think it's best to state this URL in the copyright file.

Bug#513242: im-switch: inconsistent quasi-loacale behaviour

2009-02-01 Thread Harshula
Hi Osamu,

On Sun, 2009-02-01 at 01:11 +0900, Osamu Aoki wrote:

all_ALL is meant as fallback default as I remember.

Perhaps def_DEF would have been a more appropriate string?

That is still awkward. Why not default.

I prefer default too. Since all_ALL exists, I assumed there was some
design decision to only use the format ll_CC.

  1) I definitely agree we need a -d option. We should not be exposing the
  user to rm -f ~/.xinput.d/*.

Patch welcom for squeeze. Too late for lenny.

I'll add it to my TODO list. ;-)

However, we still need an all_ALL that over-rides everything else.

Changing meaning is bad idea for upgrade. If we need override, why not
introduce override. Adding new alias is fine so we can introduce
 default.

Then let us at a minimum,

1) Remove all_ALL from the documentation.

2) Add a check to im-switch which warns the user of a deprecated
all_ALL, if it exists.

3) Add a fake default locale that acts like a default.

4) I would prefer to use the string all for a fake locale that is
meant to represent 'all' locales, instead of the string override. It
is clear and simple.

So, I would prefer something like this

for f in$HOME/.xinput.d/all \
   $HOME/.xinput.d/${LNG} \
   $HOME/.xinput.d/all_ALL \
   $HOME/.xinput.d/default \
   /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all \
   /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/${LNG} \
   /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL \
   /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default ; do

  3) I wonder if the packages that depend on im-switch use all_ALL.

  Reverse Depends:
uim-common,im-switch
skkinput,im-switch
scim-pinyin,im-switch
scim,im-switch
kinput2-common,im-switch
imhangul,im-switch
gtk-im-libthai,im-switch
gcin,im-switch
fcitx,im-switch

I do not think they should use all_ALL to set im-switch beavior (I know
this may not be followed as I know.)

/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default was meant to be the system default fall
 back.

Ok.

  4) Is im-switch more complicated than it needs to be? Should we actually
take a step back and have a look at what it is trying to solve?

That is my opinion too. I have cut down as much since I took over
updates. But next step is think about much simpler infrastructure with
more flexibility for each package. ... any volunteer to make this
happen is welcome. (I think use of alternative was overkill at least
 for ~/.)

I'll add this to my TODO list too. ;-)

cya,

Bug#511248: xdg-screensaver and xscreensaver

2009-02-01 Thread Martin van Es
Hi,

There's more than xset s off to it. I can only blank my screen using
StandbyTime (using native xorg.conf screenblanking) which is not turned off by
xset s off. -dpms is needed to turn off StandBy'ing the screen.

My xorg.conf contains this entry:
Section ServerLayout
...
Option StandbyTime 1
...
EndSection

and my xine wrapper script looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/xset -dpms s off
xine $@
/usr/bin/xset +dpms s on

Now the X screensaver/blanker is switched off and on properly (I know s
off is superfluous in this case, I just let it linger for clarity's sake).
