Bug#513720: [mbr] Fails to boot the first partition?
Le January 31, 2009 08:17:43 pm Santiago Garcia Mantinan, vous avez écrit : I installed mbr and d-i on a USB memory stick which contains a single partition, a primary 2 GB FAT16. On 3 PC-s, the memory stick works as expected. On the oldest PC I have, an ECS K7S5A, I got the key to load MBR after a few hours of struggling, but I can't do anything past loading mbr. The boot prompt shows 1FA: but pressing 1 has no effect. FWIW, pressing F prints the prompt again. In advanced mode, I can boot GRUB, which is installed on the HDD. Ummm, that would be really weird, how do you boot grub from the HDD using the advanced mode? I mean, what keys do you press? In advanced mode, the prompt becomes 1234F: and I can boot GRUB using 2, 3 and 4. It seems like mbr fails to load the first partition. Well... I'd like to know what is on your HDD (where is that grub installed, partition table? that would be hd0) and what boot program do you have on the primary partition of the USB (I mean, what's on the FAT mbr that our mbr is supposed to call?) The HDD (hd0) contains several partitions including a Windows installation and several Debian installations. GRUB was installed by d-i in the usual way, which is in the MBR unless I'm mistaken. I don't know what boot program is on the flash drive's partition. Could that be syslinux? The memory stick I used came with a FAT16 partition which I didn't touch. I created the stick following section 4.3.2.1. Partitioning the USB stick of lenny's installation guide. http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s03.html#usb-copy-flexible I did not use mkdosfs (though I could easily try recreating the partition with it if that's what determines what's in the FAT's MBR). Any other info you can give us? Anything you want. Something I omitted to mention initially is that the ECS K7S5A is a pre-2003 motherboard, which is in the beginning of advanced boot possibilities. I guess that once mbr has started, this is irrelevant, but I don't know. Setting the BIOS to boot from USB HDD won't work, I had to set it to boot from USB FDD. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#513786: gnome-panel: Window List broken in Vertical Panels Less Than 30 Pixels Wide
Package: gnome-panel Version: 2.20.3-5 Severity: important *** Please type your report below this line *** If the panel is placed in a vertical position, on the side of the screen, and the panel width is less than 30 pixels, the window list buttons display no useable information. The only thing that appears are two dots .., which makes every button appear the same. Hence you have no idea which button coordinates to which open window, rendering the window list completely useless. Ideally, in this circumstance icons would appear and the text in the buttons would reorient vertically. This is a known bug in Gnome that has existed for years and never been addressed. See: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86382 There are also other problems with how the window list performs in a vertical panel that is wider than 30 pixels (also described in the above Gnome bug report). -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages gnome-panel depends on: ii gnome-about2.22.3-2 The GNOME about box ii gnome-control-center 1:2.20.3-2utilities to configure the GNOME d ii gnome-desktop-data 2.22.3-2 Common files for GNOME 2 desktop a ii gnome-menus2.22.2-4 an implementation of the freedeskt ii gnome-panel-data 2.20.3-5 common files for the GNOME Panel ii libatk1.0-01.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-0 2.22.0-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.22.0-1 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.7-16GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-6.1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.76-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libecal1.2-7 2.22.3-1.1Client library for evolution calen ii libedataserver1.2-92.22.3-1.1Utility library for evolution data ii libedataserverui1.2-8 2.22.3-1.1GUI utility library for evolution ii libgconf2-42.22.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-01:2.6.2-1 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.6-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-desktop-2 2.22.3-2 Utility library for loading .deskt ii libgnome-menu2 2.22.2-4 an implementation of the freedeskt ii libgnome2-02.20.1.1-1The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomeui-0 2.20.1.1-2The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 1:2.22.0-5GNOME Virtual File System (runtime ii libgtk2.0-02.12.11-4 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii liborbit2 1:2.14.13-0.1 libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpanel-applet2-0 2.20.3-5 library for GNOME Panel applets ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-3 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libwnck22 2.22.3-1 Window Navigator Construction Kit ii libx11-6 2:1.1.5-2 X11 client-side library ii libxau61:1.0.3-3 X11 authorisation library ii menu-xdg 0.3 freedesktop.org menu compliant win Versions of packages gnome-panel recommends: ii alacarte 0.11.5-1 easy GNOME menu editing tool ii evolution-data-server 2.22.3-1.1 evolution database backend server ii gnome-applets 2.20.1-2 Various applets for GNOME 2 panel ii gnome-icon-theme 2.22.0-1 GNOME Desktop icon theme ii gnome-session 2.20.3-2 The GNOME 2 Session Manager Versions of packages gnome-panel suggests: ii gnome-system-tools 2.20.0-2Cross-platform configuration utili ii gnome-terminal [x-terminal-e 2.22.3-3The GNOME 2 terminal emulator appl ii gnome-user-guide [gnome2-use 2.22.1-1GNOME user's guide ii nautilus 2.20.0-7file manager and graphical shell f ii xterm [x-terminal-emulator] 235-1 X terminal emulator ii yelp 2.22.1-8+b1 Help browser for GNOME 2 -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#513688: [Pkg-nagios-devel] Bug#513688: /usr/share/nagios-plugins/templates-standard/nt.cfg is missing information
Hi Jan, Thanks for the tip, that is a possibility, but when someone is following the documentation it is confusing that it doesn't work like they say: (http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/monitoring-windows.html) Add the following service definition to monitor the CPU utilization on the Windows server and generate a CRITICAL alert if the 5-minute CPU load is 90% or more or a WARNING alert if the 5-minute load is 80% or greater. define service{ use generic-service host_name winserver service_description CPU Load check_command check_nt!CPULOAD!-l 5,80,90 } It is confusing and it took me some time to find out what the problem was. Someone who doesn't know much about linux and just want to get nagios running will have a hard time when things are not working like documented. Looking in the nt,cfg file it looks like only the CPULOAD is inserted (the $ARGS1$) and the second argument is not used at all. what about using 'check_nt!CPULOAD -l 5,80,90' in your service check? The following should work: define service { host_name frame service_description LOAD check_command check_nt!CPULOAD -l 5,80,90 use generic-service } I double checked it, and the following works just fine here: define service { host_name frame service_description LOAD check_command check_nt!'CPULOAD -l 5,50,80' use generic-service } With kind regards, Jan. -- Never write mail to w...@spamfalle.info, you have been warned! -BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK- Version: 3.1 GIT d-- s+: a- C+++ UL P+ L+++ E- W+++ N+++ o++ K++ w--- O M V- PS PE Y++ PGP++ t-- 5 X R tv- b+ DI- D++ G++ e++ h-- r+++ y+++ --END GEEK CODE BLOCK-- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#513751: debian-installer: lenny install - gnome-audio package is not installed by default
reassign 513751 gnome-desktop-environmnt thanks Quoting George Kirkham (kirk...@internode.on.net): Stefano, The package gnome-desktop-environment only Suggests: gnome-audio, and so will not install gnome-audio by default during the debian lenny install. Would I be correct in saying that the debian-installer would have to be configured to include gnome-audio for it to be installed. Having gnome-audio installed as part or the debian lenny installation would seem to be a logical to me. Working around other packages' dependencies is not Debian Installer's job. I suppose that Debian GNOME maintainers pondered very carefully the dependencies of gnome-desktop-environment and, if they did put gnome-audio as a Suggests only, they probably have good reasons. So, maybe you want to talk about this with them but that bug can't be dealt with on D-I side. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#512089: annoying portmap conflict
Hi Cristoph I'll think about your comments. The problem is that there are other software packages that do similar things. I'm not so sure that this should be the scope of harden-servers, even though I think it is a very good thing. Best regards, // Ola On Sun, Feb 01, 2009 at 03:54:22AM +0100, Christoph Anton Mitterer wrote: Hi Ola. Sorry for that ultra long delay. On Tue, 2009-01-20 at 07:23 +0100, Ola Lundqvist wrote: Yes I know that this one is annoying and I know that you can configure things in a proper way. However the intention with the harden-* suite is that you will get a more hardened system without the need to make special configurations manually. My idea is the following: Even on servers it is nowadays not so uncommon that you have fam running and on desktops anyway. A user probably have set up portmap correctly, but still cannot install harden-servers. While portmap will stay in secure/loopback-only mode, harden-servers will stay uninstalled. And thus the user might easily install one of the other packages that harden-servers conflicts with, and which is really an evil package. You see both ways have their disadvantage, but personally I'd consider it better not to conflict with portmap and let the user install it in order to secure him from the other packages and solve the portmap problem like described below: However I appriciate your feedback on this and if I or someone else find a very good solution to this, I will happily apply a good patch. Well the only way I can think of right now is, that package adds some test to debconf that checks whether portmap is bound to the loopback device. Such a test might be even added as cronjob (perhaps weekly or even daily) in order to notify the user when he installs portmap after harden-servers or later changes the portmap config. If that cronjob finds a non-loopback setting it might even deactivate portmap. Bug#509307: xbacklight: -set does nothing if it thinks the setting is already correct
On Sun, 1 Feb 2009, Brice Goglin wrote: Reuben Thomas wrote: Package: xbacklight Severity: normal xbacklight -set sometimes has no effect. It may be a bug in the driver. If the driver doesn't reset its backlight value on suspend/resume, xbacklight will read a wrong value from it, and thus do nothing if the set the same value. Did you actually ever observe the bug when not resuming from suspend? No. I'm not sure how I would set up an equivalent circumstance, i.e. change the backlight without running xbacklight. Bug#513793: amarok 2 (experimental) dependency problem? (amarok-engine-xine)
Package: amarok Version: 2.0.1.1-1 Severity: normal After upgrade from 1.4.10 to 2.0.1, I discovered the strange behavior that amarok skipped tracks, playing thus every other track. On the amarok.kde.org forum I saw that this is related to xine - but my system was indeed correctly configured to use the xine engine. I did notice, however, that the package amarok-engine-xine, version 1.4.10 remained installed. So I tried removing this, and, after restarting amarok, all tracks are now played correctly. It would appear that there may have been some interference with this old package left around, so the bug to report is most likely a simple problem of dependencies for the new amarok 2.0 experimental package. Beware, however, as kdelibs5 was also upgraded at the same time, and I do not know what influence this may have had on my experience... Thank you! Robert Edmonds wrote: Package: x11-xserver-utils Version: 7.3+5 Tags: patch, upstream if the system's hostname contains non-ASCII characters, iceauth will fail, typically with something like 'bad add command line'. please apply the attached patch, which removes the extraneous isascii() check in the skip_nonspace() function. Bug#509307: xbacklight: -set does nothing if it thinks the setting is already correct
Reuben Thomas wrote: Package: xbacklight Severity: normal xbacklight -set sometimes has no effect. For example, when I suspend and resume my laptop, the backlight is reset to 100%, but is still reported as whatever I set it to before. xbacklight seems to do nothing if I try to set it to the same value; instead, I must first set it to a different value. It may be a bug in the driver. If the driver doesn't reset its backlight value on suspend/resume, xbacklight will read a wrong value from it, and thus do nothing if the set the same value. Did you actually ever observe the bug when not resuming from suspend? Which driver do you use? Can you try the latest driver from experimental and a recent kernel? Bug#513813: python-kde4-dev: Generated file needs an extra line for UTF-8 encoding
Package: python-kde4-dev Version: 4:4.2.0-1 Severity: important Tags: patch Using the pykdeuic4 the generated python script doesn't contain a coding header. When someone uses unicode characters 127 at the qt-designer the generated python code contains them as-is. This makes it an invalid python script. This is easily fixed by adding a one-line header at the python code. The attached patch fixes this simple bug. As a bonus it also fixes another problem: The generated file starts with an empty line. Bug#513688: [Pkg-nagios-devel] Bug#513688: /usr/share/nagios-plugins/templates-standard/nt.cfg is missing information
Hi David, On Sunday 01 February 2009 09:53, you wrote: Thanks for the tip, that is a possibility, but when someone is following the documentation it is confusing that it doesn't work like they say: (http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/monitoring-windows.html) Add the following service definition to monitor the CPU utilization on the Windows server and generate a CRITICAL alert if the 5-minute CPU load is 90% or more or a WARNING alert if the 5-minute load is 80% or greater. define service{ use generic-service host_name winserver service_description CPU Load check_command check_nt!CPULOAD!-l 5,80,90 } here I disagree with you. It's completly along with the documentation. Since monitoring via nsclient seems not so common for users of our package, we are using a highly abstracted command definition. The point is, how you understand $ARGS1$, we understand is as the first string between the check command (here check_nt) including the first ! and the next ! or end of line (what comes first). So you call here check_command check_command!$ARGS1$, which result in my exmaple into the command line: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nt -H '$HOSTADDRESS$' -v 'CPULOAD -l 5,80,90' This is exactly what you want. I imply, that someone who is trying such unconventional check, did also read the documentation[1] and understand how argument macros works. Anyways ... If you have a look at Password Protection on the page you mentioned, you will see, that our check definition in most cases don't work. There is used the default port (1248) of the plugin instead of the (actual) default port of NSClient++, even the password isn't passed. But this will not change, at least not so far in the future, because there may many people, which configured nsclient to run on port 1248 and these checks will break. So feel free to create your own command definitions which are highly customised to your own setup, I would recommand to place them in a seperate config file anywhere in /etc/nagios[23]/conf.d/. Bug#513814: libmesh: debian/copyright and license problems
Package: libmesh Version: 0.6.3.dfsg~rc1-1 Severity: serious debian/copyright doesn't contain the full text of the QPL, which is a policy violation. Also the QPL code was apparently modified for libmesh, which is probably a license violation since the QPL does not allow distribution of modified source code, only in patch format together with the original source code. Bug#513820: Proposal for a new 'needsponsor' tag
Package: debbugs Version: 2.4.1 Severity: wishlist Hello, While browsing for RC bugs to fix, I found that it is not easy to find bugs which are fixed by the maintainer but in need of a sponsor. What do you think about implementing a 'needsponsor' tag that would precisely mean that ? It could be a simple tag, or even a more complex object like the 'forwarded' system, where the maintainer could enter an URL for the fixedpackage's .dsc file (for instance on mentors). How do you like that ? Cheers, Vincent PS: I quickly browsed over bugs of debbugs and bugs.debian.org and I couldn't find any title related to sponsor. Bug#513735: patch
Actually, this patch will not really fix anything, because the ru_RU.KOI8-R locale needs to have been previously generated and installed on the system, for this to work. Otherwise, declaring LANG and LC_ALL (with or without the export statement) will always fall back to the C locale that is the default on Debian's archive buildd network. The only way we could sort-of fix this would be to Build-Depends upon locales-all to ensure that KOI8-R is always generated and installed before we start the build. However, I don't like that solution, because Debian derivatives such as Ubuntu don't offer that same locales-all metapackage and I want to avoid forking the packaging. Alternately, we could call 'locale-gen' in early building stages to generate the locale, before we proceed with building the dictionaries. However, I'm not sure how we'd delete the locale during cleanup after the build process is complete. Still, it puzzles me how we managed to build the package just fine until recently without all that fuzz.

Bug#513752: Acknowledgement (debian-installer: lenny - System Sounds do not give sound, MP3 and CD do give sound.)
I believe that this issue should be directed to another location. While I have no idea why System Sounds works, I now believe that a) a standard Debian Lenny install is installing OSS for sound, not alsa. However what does gnome-audio require, oss or alsa ? b) gnome-desktop-environment installs gstreamer0.10-alsa which would indicate that gnome uses alsa. c) does sun-java use oss or alsa ? sun-java works with standard installation of lenny, but if I install libesd-alsa0 then gnome-audio produces System Sounds but sun-java then does not. I am not sure where this issue resides, I would suggest that in the first place it would be gnome-desktop-environment . Why not default. I prefer default too. Since all_ALL exists, I assumed there was some design decision to only use the format ll_CC. 1) I definitely agree we need a -d option. We should not be exposing the user to rm -f ~/.xinput.d/*. Patch welcom for squeeze. Too late for lenny. I'll add it to my TODO list. ;-) However, we still need an all_ALL that over-rides everything else. Changing meaning is bad idea for upgrade. If we need override, why not introduce override. Adding new alias is fine so we can introduce default. Then let us at a minimum, 1) Remove all_ALL from the documentation. 2) Add a check to im-switch which warns the user of a deprecated all_ALL, if it exists. 3) Add a fake default locale that acts like a default. 4) I would prefer to use the string all for a fake locale that is meant to represent 'all' locales, instead of the string override. It is clear and simple. So, I would prefer something like this for f in$HOME/.xinput.d/all \ $HOME/.xinput.d/${LNG} \ $HOME/.xinput.d/all_ALL \ $HOME/.xinput.d/default \ /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all \ /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/${LNG} \ /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL \ /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default ; do 3) I wonder if the packages that depend on im-switch use all_ALL. Ok. 4) Is im-switch more complicated than it needs to be? Should we actually take a step back and have a look at what it is trying to solve? That is my opinion too. I have cut down as much since I took over updates. But next step is think about much simpler infrastructure with more flexibility for each package. ... any volunteer to make this happen is welcome. Bug#511248: xdg-screensaver and xscreensaver
Hi, There's more than xset s off to it. I can only blank my screen using StandbyTime (using native xorg.conf screenblanking) which is not turned off by xset s off. -dpms is needed to turn off StandBy'ing the screen. My xorg.conf contains this entry: Section ServerLayout ... Option StandbyTime 1 ... EndSection and my xine wrapper script looks like this: #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/xset -dpms s off xine $@ /usr/bin/xset +dpms s on Now the X screensaver/blanker is switched off and on properly (I know s off is superfluous in this case, I just let it linger for clarity's sake).
