Please answer those questions. Without these answers, I'll close the

...but, as far as I know, the debian/attic/ directory has obsolete
stuff that's not used. I should actually drop that directory unless
someone knows about the rationale for its existence.

Still, console-data's config script *has* the call the "dpkg
--print-installation-architecture" but the culprit here is
dh-consoledata (from the console-common source package and used to
build console-data).

The call to "dpkg --print-installation-architecture" is still in
console-common (in
/usr/share/debhelper/dh-consoledata/common.pl). Therefore
dh-consoledata inserts it in the generated .config file for
console-data.

So, what should be done:

1) change console-common's common.pl file and rebuild console-common
2) drop debian/attic in console-data to avoid later confusion
3) rebuilt console-data with the new console-common

xfce4-terminal 0.2.90 (in experimental) now uses file system monitoring.
Could you check if it fixes the problem? (shouldn't need any extra
dependency and it's quite safe to run it atm)

Hi,

There's no reason to run Wireshark as root either, but you don't complain about
that, which you should. All that's needed is dumpcap running with capture
privileges.

So get them to install dumpcap setuid root and *both* your problems go away.

I made a patch to support SH.

Can you elaborate? Do you mean it should go in its own target?

THis would be ideal. Current tools like "crash" don't work with an
image that's been stripped with "--only-keep-debug". I'm not sure what
strip is removing that crash needs, but I'll look into it.

Stripping the modules themselves with "--only-keep-debug" seems to work
with crash, but then it saves only a marginal amount of space (from 963
MB down to 926 MB on a 2.6.29 kernel). Similarly with the vmlinux: from
69 MB down to 60 MB. Maybe strip is just confused by something in the
format of a kernel module?

Uhm, yes... Why should I not be? If you're worried about the virtual
packages it provides, I'm not partial to them. If the patch needs
improvement, I'm glad to improve on specific points, but I don't
understand what you don't like about this section.

Bug#537207: lintian: [checks/description] Wrong length with some Unicode characters.

2009-07-15 Thread Charles Plessy
Package: lintian
Version: 2.2.13
Severity: normal

Hello again,

it is unfortunate that perl function ‘length’ does not match the screen size
with some Unicode characters:

$ perl -e 'print length(","),"\n"'

$ perl -e 'print length("‘"),"\n"'

$ perl -e 'print length("‘,"),"\n"'

This triggers false positives like “extended-description-line-too-long”.

However an equivalent patch is in upstream's CVS what looks like a kind

Can we please get this in lenny?

If upstream plans to do a new release in a reasonably short timeframe,

That is reasonable.

Bug#537201: dpkg --print-installation-architecture vs dpkg --print-architecture revisited

2009-07-15 Thread sobtwmxt
Package: console-data
Version: 1.09-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

debian/attic/console-data.config uses
dpkg --print-installation-architecture
, which is obsolete and prints a warning to the user.

$ dpkg --print-installation-architecture
dpkg: warning: obsolete option '--print-installation-architecture',
please use '--print-architecture' instead.
i386

It used to have `dpkg --print-architecture', but was changed to the
current usage in #54798. Qouting the relevat part of #54798:

If you read the dpkg --help you'll see that :
   dpkg --print-architectureprint target architecture (uses
GCC)

You should be using dpkg --print-installation-architecture ... this
is
a common mistake and it should be in a debian developers FAQ if
there was one.

Without gcc, dpkg --print-architecture is failing and caused your
package
postinst to abort (note the empty arch string outputted by
console-data debug line)...

dpkg --help doesn't mention anymore the requirment for gcc for
--print-architecture. There for, I suggested either:

Well... There are still something which intrigates me. The original version of the pool of
works is running for more than two years on a Debian etch, which was upgraded to Lenny
some time ago. But the MTA is postfix, not sendmail. An not a single crash...

A possible explanation is the timeouts set up on sendmail side.

This bug only generates a crash when an inactive connection was detected by libmilter (not
by the MTA). So, if the MTA timeout for inactive connections is less than two hours, the
connection will be closed by the MTA and the filter will never crash. I'm wondering if
some of the default timeouts set by debian can't be bigger than two hours...

Can you tell me what are your timeout values ?

The bug from dbus seems to come from a bug in debhelper, so maybe there are

Hey,

I really don't see how that one can be fixed in cryptsetup. It's rather
a kernel bug. Thus reassigning the bug to linux-2.6.

Bug#537110: ITP: libdap -- A C++ SDK contains an implementation of DAP 2.0 and 3.1, Client- and Server-side support classes and a prototype implementation of the AIS

2009-07-15 Thread Youhei SASAKI
Hi, Faidon

> Could you include a brief description of DAP and AIS?
> Reading this description made absolutely no sense to me.

DAP is Data Access Protocol. AIS is Ancillary Information Services
provides some syntax and semantics.
  - syntax: the computer representation of a data object, data types
and structures at the computer level; e.g., This data is a
floating point array of 20 by 40 elements.
  - semantics: The information about the contents of an object; e.g.,
This data is sea surface temperature in degrees Celsius for a
certain region of the Earth.

This library provides C++ SDK for OpeNDAP(Opensource Network Data
Access Protocol). OpeNDAP is a framework that simplifies all aspects
of scientific data networking.

OPeNDAP provides software which makes local data accessible to remote
locations regardless of local storage format. OPeNDAP also provides
tools for transforming existing applications into OPeNDAP clients
(i.e., enabling them to remotely access OPeNDAP served data).

Generally, editors are installed on the host rather than in each chroot.
In the specific case of mahler (the MIPS porter box) the host has vi,

I found this bug in Lenny and made a fix which will keep trying to find LVM

once, to running each time in the slumber
loop. It works perfectly for Lenny and Squeeze, although it spits out a lot of

Bug#537198: wicd executes script from wireless-settings.conf before wired connection

2009-07-15 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: wicd
Version: 1.6.1-3
Severity: important

I have the following problem: each time I choose the wired
connection (this is the default), the settings of the DHCP
client get modified, which trashes the connection. This
problem doesn't occur when I start the DHCP client from
a shell, so that the problem necessarily comes from wicd.

I have a script that does such a modification, but it is used for
wireless only (beforescript settings in wireless-settings.conf,
and that's for SSID's that aren't even reachable here).

wired-settings.conf contains:

[wired-default]
afterscript = None
broadcast = None
predisconnectscript = None
dns3 = None
postdisconnectscript = None
dns1 = None
lastused = True
use_static_dns = False
default = 1
netmask = None
dns2 = None
beforescript = None
disconnectscript = None
ip = None
gateway = None
use_global_dns = False

so that no scripts should be executed.

Bug#537125: Please bin NMU dbus on all arches to fix borken debhelper pathnames

2009-07-15 Thread Loïc Minier
Hey

 debhelper 7.2.24 fixed a regression with handling of args to dh_install
 which had an explicit debian/tmp; this regression has borken dbus which
 subsequently breaks a bunch of builds. The new debhelper is now
 installed and fixes the dbus issue; could you please bin NMU it on all
 arches? (dbus has no arch: all package).

   Thanks,

Starting with 1.6 Liferea replaced the HTML rendering widget.
Previously we supported all types of Mozilla flavours, now it is
Webkit-only. The DnD support was realized by the Mozilla widget
and isn't by the current libwebkit widget. It might be worth asking
the Webkit guys to implement the DnD source.

I don't understand. Are you suggesting that the user is present in both the
NIS map *and* in /etc/passwd? Why would you do that?

Bug#537182: leftover startpar process after makefile concurrency boot

2009-07-15 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
I build a startpar version with debug symbols and tested using this
one.  I got this backtrace:

#0  0xb8086424 in __kernel_vsyscall ()
#1  0xb7ff3e53 in read () from /lib/i686/cmov/libc.so.6
#2  0x08049ace in do_forward () at startpar.c:463
#3  0x0804a961 in main (argc=4, argv=0xbfccef44) at startpar.c:669

This is the hanging code:

void do_forward(void)
{
  char buf[4096], *b;
  int r, rr;
  setsid();
  while ((r = read(0, buf, sizeof(buf))) > 0)
{
  b = buf;
  while (r > 0)
{
  rr = write(1, b, r);
  if (rr == -1)
{
  perror("write");
  rr = r;
}
  r -= rr;
}
}
  _exit(0);
}

Not quite sure why file descriptor 0 points to /dev/ptmx at that
point.

Happy hacking,

Aptitude and apt-get use different problem resolvers and it can happen
that they find different solutions. I even found that aptitude will
sometimes ignore the pining and install a package that doesn't have
the highest pin while apt-get will never do that. So it is totaly
possible that aptitude finds a solution to install something that
apt-get will refuse to install.

Interesting to see would be why apt-get doesn't want to install the
dependencies. The "will not be installed" always means there is a
problem further down the dependency chain. And then compare that with
the solution aptitude found. But I guess it is too late for that now.

Bug#537190: vlc: XML parser error when opening a valid xspf playlist

2009-07-15 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: vlc
Version: 1.0.0-1
Severity: normal

When I opened an xspf playlist (attached), I got the following error:

[0x12555b8] xml xml error: XML parser error (line 163) : Extra content at the
end of the document

even though xmllint did not complain on this xspf file (neither on
xspf files referenced in this one). Then VLC took into account the
playlist until this spurious error.

I can't reproduce the bug any longer, but anyway VLC no longer
displays the playlist correctly (I'm going to report another
bug concerning this one).

When I open an xspf playlist that contains xspf files, it is displayed
as a flat list of files instead of a tree.

Bug#537191: Today kdm stopped working

2009-07-15 Thread Eric Valette
Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.2.4-1+b1
Severity: important

Today is a bad day. First dbus made the whole sstems unresponsive due to a
bug in debhelper leading to install most dbus binaries using /debian/tmp as
root.

Fixed it by copying manually by hand. then restarted. Got kdm again. But loggin
lead to a black screen with nothing doable from keyboard or mouse.

No error from X. Got this on two diffrenet machines today using different
display drivers. Here is what I updated today.

I have no clue what broke. It is not a X problem. If from kdm, I switch to
console, log as root, stop kdm, log on another console as a normal user and
start x usin startx evything works.

If from another machine I log in, restart kdm, I get the login screen again.
If I stop it agian, my console are gone. I see things from consolekit but
really have no clue.

ok found it now... but no trace of it searching in

Found it in the git repo :)

I just called
apt-get --reinstall install xserver-xorg-dev
and the package was reinstalled from the local cache.
Now e.g. /usr/include/xorg/miscstruct.h lists #include , there
is no prefix any longer.

Something seems to have altered the file automatically.

Well I just called make from the mga driver sources.

Bug#507545: NSLU2 Lenny kernel-params Skript

Are anyone waiting for me to be able to continue solving this bug?

The Default-Stop line could be empty, as the stop action is a no-op.
There is no need to waste time during shutdown or in runlevel 1 doing
nothing. Other than that, I believe the header look good. :)

Happy hacking,

That's what the upstream bug report suggests in case changing it completely to
wait for the process to finish is not wanted.

Bug#537130: Workaround

2009-07-15 Thread Joe
It looks as if copying the files from /debian/tmp to their proper
locations, then re-running the upgrade, may be enough to solve the
problem. Possibly some of the copying steps were missed. The following
reboot seemed to be clean.

For Lenny I'd recommend to stay with the madwifi driver (which was
only removed from unstable). If the error persists with 2.6.30
from unstable, please file a bug at bugzilla.kernel.org and
send the bugnumber to this bug. This needs to be fixed upstream,
the Debian kernel doesn't carry ath5k patches.

Thanks John.
This looks like it includes a second/full set of binaries - is it
possible to just scrape the dbg symbols off the binaries into the new

I'd suggest fix them, to avoid confusion in the migration audtool -> audtool2.

Bug#537184: gnuplot: Axis labels missing on terminal png after set size

2009-07-15 Thread Matthias Bock
Package: gnuplot
Version: 4.2.2-1.2
Severity: normal

When terminal is set to png, gnuplot's output files do not contain
all axis labels (numbers) after the size parameter is altered.

The problem can be reproduced by typing:

set terminal png
set output 'okay.png'
plot sin(x)
set output 'missing.png'
set size 2,2
plot sin(x)

The problem seems not to occur for PostScript.

Umh, FWIW I have had no xscreensaver problems since the offender
(sorry, I cannot find the right bug number for it) was removed. Thing
is, the crash was quite unpredictable, so I cannot really reproduce
it.

Bug#537182: leftover startpar process after makefile concurrency boot

2009-07-15 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package:  sysvinit-utils
Version:  2.86.ds1-65
User: initscripts-ng-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: runtime-problem

During testing of concurrent booting with dependency based sequencing,
I discovered a leftover startpar process stuck with read() on
/dev/ptmx. ps -ef report the process was 'startpar -f -- rsyslog'.
The startpar process had three file descriptors open, 0 -> /dev/ptmx,
1 -> /dev/console and 2 -> /dev/console.  gdb backtrace of the
startpar process do not show any symbols.

To reprodyce the process, do
'echo CONCURRENCY=makefile >> /etc/default/rcS' and reboot with
unstable.

The rsyslog version is 4.2.0-1. With the dependency based sequencing,
rsyslog was started alone and first in the rc2.d/ directory.

Happy hacking,

Bug#537181: xserver-xorg-dev: Invalid #includes for pixman.h in several headers

2009-07-15 Thread Florian Boelstler
Package: xserver-xorg-dev
Version: 2:1.4.2-10.lenny2

These headers refer to #include , which should be
 provided by package libpixman-1-dev on Lenny:
/usr/include/xorg/fb.h
/usr/include/xorg/miscstruct.h
/usr/include/xorg/picture.h

This prevents e.g. the xorg mga driver from being built from source.

Even libpixman-1-dev ships a broken header pixman-1/pixman.h, but this will be
reported in another issue.

Yes it seems that it's a bit painful.

I'll try booting my intel thinkpad with modeset=0 to check, but, for the
moment:

intel thinkpad with KMS:
cat /proc/fb
0 inteldrmfb

radeon thinkpad with fb:
cat /proc/fb
0 ATI Radeon 4c59

So yeah, it could be sufficient atm if it works ok without KMS on the
intel thinkpad.

Cheers,

Bug#523942: linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390 will not boot!

2009-07-15 Thread STEPHEN POWELL
I issued the mkinitramfs command with the exact options you specified,
then re-ran zipl, then rebooted. No change in results. But the
custom kernel built with kernel-package works just fine. Could this be
some kind of cross-compilation problem, perhaps? Do you build your
s390 kernels on an s390 platform? Or do you use a common platform
(such as i386) to build kernel images for all platforms? Has the
Debian installer been rebuilt with the new kernel image? If so, I'll
try it out to see if it works.

I doubt that this has anything to do with the problem, but I'll
mention it anyway just for grins because I'm running out of ideas.
There are a couple of departures in my environment from the typical
plain vanilla Debian install. First of all, the minidisks that I
use are CMS-formatted minidisks, not Linux cdl minidisks. They
have been processed under CMS with the FORMAT and RESERVE commands,
which creates a single implicit partition on the minidisk consisting
of the reserved CMS file. The dasdfmt and fdasd commands under
Linux are therefore not used in preparing these minidisks. mke2fs
is used, however, to create a file system on the implicit partition.
(In the case of the swap disk, mkswap is used instead of mke2fs.) Second,
with the exception of the /boot partition, which is controlled by
the dasd_eckd_mod driver, all other partitions are controlled by
the dasd_diag_mod driver. Here is my setup:

--

vdev Linux device Partition Mount Point Driver
    -  ---  -
0200  dasda dasda1 /dasd_diag_mod
0201  dasdb dasdb1 /bootdasd_eckd_mod
0202  dasdc dasdc1 /homedasd_diag_mod
0203  dasdd dasdd1 swap dasd_diag_mod

--

I would use dasd_diag_mod for all of the minidisks, if I could;
but zipl requires that the /boot partition use the ECKD
discipline. The dasd_diag_mod driver can only be used in a
virtual machine under z/VM. When I IPL, I use the CP command

IPL 0201

I know from experience that it is absolutely critical that
dasd_diag_mod get loaded BEFORE dasd_mod. Otherwise, the
permanent root file system cannot be mounted. Is it possible that
anything in the stock kernel might cause dasd_mod to be loaded
before dasd_diag_mod?

Here are some pertinent files that control this:

/etc/modprobe.d/dasd:

--

options dasd_mod dasd=0.0.0200(diag),0.0.0201,0.0.0202-0.0.0203(diag)

--

/etc/initramfs-tools/modules:

--

dasd_diag_mod
dasd_eckd_mod
dasd_mod

--

/etc/fstab:

--

#
proc/proc   procdefaults0   0
/dev/dasda1 /   ext3defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/dasdb1 /boot   ext3defaults0   2
/dev/dasdc1 /home   ext3defaults0   2
/dev/dasdd1 noneswapsw  0   0

--

/etc/zipl.conf

--

[defaultboot]
defaultmenu = menu

:menu
target = /boot

2 = old
default = 1

[debian]
target = /boot
image = /boot/vmlinuz

[old]
target = /boot
image = /boot/vmlinuz.old
ramdisk = /boot/initrd.img.old
parameters = root=/dev/dasda1 vmhalt=LOGOFF vmpoff=LOGOFF
optional = 1

--

Currently, /boot/vmlinuz is a symbolic link to
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-custom2c-s390,
/boot/initrd.img is a symbolic link to /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-custom2c-s390,
/boot/vmlinuz.old is a symbolic link to /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-s390, and
/boot/initrd.img.old is a symbolic link to /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-2-s390.
This makes "debian", the default system, point to the kernel image that works,
2.6.26-custom2c-s390; and "old", which can be selected by request with

#CP VINPUT VMSG 2

from the zipl menu points to the stock kernel that doesn't work, 2.6.26-2-s390.

The reason that I have not bothered to give these details before is that
(a) linux-image-2.6.26-1-s390 works and (b) linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390x works.
Both of these images work in the same setup as above. We need to concentrate
on that. Why would the above two images work but not linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390?

Thanks for the bug report. If you have time, could you please send us
a patch to the Debian packaging, that fixes it? That would help a lot.
