Package: vlc-data Version: 1.0.5-1 Severity: serious I backported vlc myself for Lenny from unstable. It used to be the case that starting a list and pressing tab would indent the current item. Right now it seems to insert a tab, and after pressing enter the next item is created at the orinal level. Bug#570618: [Pkg-alsa-devel] Bug#570618: alsa-source: PC speaker not working correctly on HDA Intel card with an Intel G45 DEVCTG chip
Could you please disable pcspkr and test the beep by controlling via the mixer? I blacklisted the module (added a line blacklist pcspkr to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf) and restarted the computer. After restarting, two things that I can't understand happened: 1. The pcspkr module still appeared in lsmod For testing you can just modprobe -r pcspkr. Blacklisting isn't needed yet 2. Although pcspkr was listed, the computer doesn't beep anymore, independently of the value of the Beep simple control in alsamixer (the control stillhas four values). Did I do the right thing or did you mean something else by disable ? Remove the blacklist entry, reboot and just modprobe -r pcspkr. rmmod pcspkr unloads the same way, I did so and the results are similar to what they were with blacklisting. Bug#533535: Bug#546045: hdparm: Specifying a disk using the by-id etc. links does not work with udev/hotplug
There's an alternative patch floating around on launchpad [1]. It's against Ubuntu's udev script but also applies against our init script. Main difference is that it also works for the non-udev case, and I see no good reason why it should not apply for both, especially as long as hdparm is also called from an init script at boot time. It would be great to have this change included in Squeeze. I'm CCing #533535 as, if applied, this change should not get lost if the init script is dropped in favor of a udev script. Bug#570755: installation-reports: Continue Back buttons switched on archive not found screen
Package: installation-reports Severity: normal A few days ago I installed debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso (md5sum: 1781299ae37a2b99b75aefa39a8ee773) from http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ on a new Dell laptop. Due to some proxy configuration I did not have a net conection even though dhclient reported one. Hence at the stage when download locations are added to apt.conf the installer reported a failure (please note that I did the install in German and roughly translated all strings back): [!!] Configuring the package manager Invalid archive mirror After the explantion (which I did not copy above) I got two choices: Continue and Back. Continue leads to the screen for selection a country for the debian archive mirror and after intermediate screens back to the one above with the error message Back returns the message that no archive mirror can be found and the installation continues. As you can see by my wording, the two buttons seem to be switched, i.e. pressing back activates the continue mechanism while pressing continue returns back to the selection process for archive mirrors. -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann deb...@helgefjell.de Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software libre: http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I have seen similar problem at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/imagej/+bug/471127 Is there any reason that you report this problem to Debian when working with Ubuntu? It might be that the wrapper script might need some adaptations and I'd be happy to include these into the Debian script if it works here. But it is hard for me to fix the wrapper for Ubuntu if I have no access to such a machine. Severity: normal I consider reducing severity to wishlist and add can not reproduce tag except there is some evidence that the problem also exists on a pure Debian machine. Per email (included below) from Charles Plessy (ple...@debian.org), I'm creating this report so the 'imagej' dependencies are listed. The problem I reported was fixed by installing default-jre and gcj-jre, Charles' speculation that tightening the dependencies may be the correct answer. These dependencies are *not* needed under Debian (just purged these to verify). So most probably this is not true for Debian and there is no evidence that this problem exists in Debian. It looks like dbus is not correctly picking up the installed modemmanager dbus policy file after installation, which leads to the flood of access denials. D-Bus uses inotify to monitor /etc/dbus-1 for changes, and there were fixes in 1.2.20 which particularly address bugs in the inotify handling [1]. So far, all bug reporters seems to have used dbus 1.2.16. 1.2.20 has migrated to testing already, so it is likely this particular issue won't show up again (and unless someone confirms this with dbus 1.2.20, I'll keep this bug at severity important). Nonetheless, there are a couple of things we might consider: 1.) modemmanager could reload dbus manually in postinst, to trigger a reload of the dbus config files 2.) network-manager should be more clever when trying to reconnect to modemmanager and not simply try to do it brute force. It could use something like a exponential back off. cheers, Michael [1] http://cgit.freedesktop.org/dbus/dbus/commit/?h=dbus-1.2id=8a9880ffd2b81df38bb0e3492bda7a9636ac0280 -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth? signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#570713: ffmpeg: remaining vulnerabilities from bug #550442
On Sa, Feb 20, 2010 at 22:02:51 (CET), Michael Gilbert wrote: package: ffmpeg version: 0.svn20080206-18 severity: serious tags: security hi, i have just tested the latest ffmpeg update against the original proof of concepts [0] reported in bug #550442 [1]. many of them are still effective. there is some good news though; i've found that upstream has addressed all of the problems in their latest svn version. attached are my findings. can you please rerun your tests using this branch: /srv/scratch/packages/ffmpeg/upstream/ffmpeg-0.5 I'm working on getting an 0.5.1 point release released RSN which will get into squeeze. Fixing these security bugs there is a higher priority for me than fixing 0.svn20080206-18. Unfortunately I'm very busy this week and cannot promise to work on that until next weekend. reference [2] may be useful to track down the other needed patches; or it may be easier to just upgrade to a new svn (however, the patches still need to be determined for stable). I don't think its really worth tracking dos-only fixes. FFmpeg is very performance tuned, and AFAIUI upstream does consider dos-only fixes only on a best efford basis as long as it doesn't impair performance. crashers that allow remote code execution however are another issue that need to be investigated. -- Gruesse/greetings, Reinhard Tartler, KeyID 945348A4 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#569436: [Pkg-scicomp-devel] Bug#569436: Bug#569436: lapack: zgesvd seems to give incorrect results

OK, thank for your investigation. I will do that then. I had a look and the problem is that blas is compiled by default with -03. I am afraid of switching to -02 decreases the performance on a key component... However, I have a few leads: * disable optimisation for just this file But which file? From what I can see, zgesvd in Lapack seems to indirectly call several Blas functions. So, which file would you compile with -O2? We would have to dig to find out... * see if forcing gcc-4.3 brings back the initial behavior True, but this is not a permanent solution, since it is unlikely that Squeeze will be shipped with two gcc's. Probably not. * report upstream (which I will probably have to do anyway) That is true. There is a fourth option: * Use -O2 on amd64, and -O3 on the rest: this is a sane option, since Atlas is available anyway on amd64, and Atlas provides better performance than the corresponding Blas/Lapack libraries anyway. Would you be agreeable to this? I am not very happy about this neither. amd64 represents now a lot of computers... For the record, I just tried with Scilab and an old version of atlas and I get: 0.0288316 - 0.1225715i0.2941664 + 0.0112984i - 0.7517416 - 0.0002798i - 0.0345902 - 0.5162818i - 0.3585172 - 0.2455863i0.6758972 - 0.3549573i - 0.0702840 - 0.8216660i - 0.7627657 + 0.4766231i - 0.0113633 + 0.1333745i Sylvestre -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#568106: programs belong in /usr/bin/
On Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 11:39:43AM +0100, Martin Pitt wrote: It's not a question of how many versions are supported in a current release, since on upgrades people will have more than one major version installed. I just wanted to make sure that it isn't server specific and forgot a dependency. However, then a -server-dev-8.4 build dependency seems wrong. What does it need that for? I didn't do the packaging :-), so I really don't know. Copying back the bug log so that the maintainer get notified. If he does not reply, I'll investigate why it is there and if it is really needed. Bug#523749: 1.2.1-2 fixes the problem, why is 1.2.1-1 still in lenny?
I recently encountered this freezing problem with lenny. After wasting some hours because I suspected there's something wrong with the serial port or Xorg configuration, I found that it is this known AND even fixed problem, but the fixed version (1.2.1-2) didn't make it to lenny somehow. So, in case you need another confirmation: 1.2.1-1 version IS so broken that it is unusable - one touch and X freezes. 1.2.1-2 fixes the problem and makes stuff work. Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.9.1-2 Severity: important Hello everyone, I experience the following problem with the intel driver on my ThinkPad X40: When KMS is disabled (e. g. by commenting the modeset option for the i915 module), the whole system hangs at X startup. The screen is blank, no keys have any effect (not even Alt+SysRq combinations). This happens whether kdm or startx are used. When enabling KMS, the system works okay (no XVideo, somewhat less stable). Unfortunately, the X-server seems to crash before writing any info to syslog or Xorg.0.log. The attached file is from the system running with KMS enabled. I will try to gather some more info by ssh-ing to the machine and starting X. If there is any other way I can supply more information, I will gladly do so. Tagged as important as it breaks X (without KMS) or means loss of quite some functinality (with KMS). Bug#547993: dpkg-dev: dpkg-buildpackage -nc incorrectly forces binary-only builds
retitle 547993 dpkg-buildpackage should support -F (full build) thanks Hi, On Tue, 22 Sep 2009, Russ Allbery wrote: However, pdebuild doesn't provide a way of passing certain options only to the initial dpkg-buildpackage invocation (which is a separate bug that I'll also report), and -nc is passed to the dpkg-buildpackage run in the chroot as well. This triggers the following limitation: -ncDo not clean the source tree (implies -b if nothing else has been selected among -B, -A or -S). But there is no option to select a normal build that includes both the source and binaries. This seems wrong to me. Why the restriction? -nc is obviously safe in this case; the source package was just freshly unpacked, so running the clean target is pointless. I recently changed -nc to allow -S also. In the commit I said: commit 18dacea0fab9d81e85a5a7d4e9ec25435df7aa5b Author: Raphael Hertzog hert...@debian.org Date: Fri May 15 16:28:45 2009 +0200 dpkg-buildpackage: allow options -nc and -S together This combination is generally not recommended as you want to ensure that a source package contains only source and not any intermediary files left-over by the previous build. Nevertheless it can be useful from time to time and instead of bluntly refusing, we now simply warn the user and let the build proceed. -nc still implies -b if nothing else has been specified as it's routinely used to test if a fix is working by restarting a previously interrupted build where it failed. So it seems to be mainly a matter of convenience for the user who are restarting an interrupted/failed build. I don't understand why -nc should have anything to do with whether or not the build is binary-only, but even assuming that you want to keep that linkage for backwards compatibility, I think there should be another option specifying the sort of package build that's done in the absence of any of -B, -A, or -S. Yeah, the best way might be to add -F for full build. Cheers, -- Raphaël Hertzog Like what I do? Bug#570767: d-i-bootimages missing, needed for pxe out of the box setup
package: debian-edu severity: important tags: moreinfo User: debian-...@lists.debian.org Usertags: debian-edu Hi, the Debian Edu Lenny release currently sets up PXE booting out of the box, by making use of a d-i-bootimages package, which is not available in Debian. This is annoying as PXE booting is a quite a nice feature and having the d-i bootimages on the DVD is needed as we want to fully support DVD installations without network. This bug lacks important information and context, but should serve as a means to track and fix this for squeeze. cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Bug#503832: [SQL-Ledger] Re: Questions Re sql-ledger debian package
On Thu, Feb 18, 2010 at 11:18:48AM -0700, Izzy Blacklock wrote: I am not entirely sure what the technical problem is but it has something to do with variable reassignment in loops, and properly thought-out scoping fixes the problem. The problem seems to occur when a variable (usually in my experience, a reference) is freed at the end of the loop but still implicitly in the current scope until some time later. At that point you get an error echoed. This is a bug but probably not a very high priority one for the Perl team because, quite frankly, no sane code would ever trigger it. This sounds much like http://rt.perl.org/rt3/Ticket/Display.html?id=50142 which is also referenced by the initial message in http://bugs.debian.org/503832 Quoting Dave Mitchell in the the first one: --- The bug itself has always been present, because items pushed onto the stack aren't reference counted, and so can get prematurely freed. Perl has just got better at detecting this and panicing rather than ploughing on.. --- At the end of the day, I need a functioning sql-ledger and right know it looks like that means I need to compile perl without threads. According to Dieter this is a problem for other projects as well, so maybe there is a need to provide a debian package of perl without threads. I wonder if it really is related to threads support at all. FWIW, I see the same panic on Perl 5.11.4 without threads with the testcase from [perl #50142]: #!perl @ARGV = qw(foo); foo(@ARGV); sub foo { my $x = shift(@ARGV); my $y = shift; } __END__ Is there any evidence that sql-ledger works better on a non-threaded than a threaded Perl 5.10.x ? -- Niko Tyni nt...@debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. It looks like something had created /usr/lib/perl/5.10 as a regular directory before you upgraded, and dpkg will not replace a directory (even an empty one) with a symlink. This is the first report of this failure mode I've seen. Do you have any idea what could have created the 5.10 directory, probably on January 19th? Ping? I don't really know what to do with this bug. Nobody else has run into this AFAIK and it seems it can only be triggered by creating a directory under /usr/lib/ behind dpkg's back. Not sure how we could guard against this. Maybe have perl-base.preinst that refuses installation if the directory already exists and is not a symlink. I'm inclined to think this isn't worth the complication but other opinions are welcome. package: cdimage.debian.org severity: wishlist User: debian-...@lists.debian.org Usertags: debian-edu x-debbugs-cc: debian-...@lists.debian.org, Ronny Aasen ro...@skolelinux.no Hi, as discussed several times already we would like to build Debian Edu images with the same tools on the same box as the regular Debian images are build, and to make them available just like all the others. Debian Edu is currently available for i386, amd64 and powerpc, for our Lenny release we released three images: a double-layer source DVD (5.3GiB or so), a regular DVD for amd64+i386 and a combined netinst-cd type for amd+i386+powerpc. For Squeeze doing roughly the same seems sensible, though maybe an additional sid CD image would be nice. For setting it up and debugging problems, Ronny Aasen and me would like to get access to the machine to do the dirty work. Currently our build setup is managed in svn and we use a patched version of debian-cd. Obviously our goal is to get rid of the patches ;-) What VCS are you using, are you using one? ;) Do you have documentation? We have http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/HowTo/MagicCDBuild and our stuff is in svn://svn.debian.org/svn/debian-edu/trunk/src/build/CD-administrator Ronny is a long time Debian Edu contributor, developer, CD build master and ftp archive maintainer. Bug#531955: More General Lack of NSS Support
I don't believe this is attributable to NIS, but a more generalized problem (and I would expect the general problem to effect current versions of the passwd package too). I'm running into a similar sort of difficulty here, except the package I've got interacting in a bad way is libnss-db. Mainly, `useradd` doesn't get the user/group DBs rebuilt when adding users/groups. This will almost certainly be a problem for any of the NSS modules that change where users/groups are stored or their formats. Looking at the list of packages, this will almost certainly effect anyone who has one or more of: libnss-db, libnss-extrausers, libnss-ldap, libnss-ldapd, libnss-mysql, libnss-mysql-bg, libnss-pgsql2, or libnss3-1d packages installed. I'm unsure whether this is a flaw in `useradd`; or whether this is a fault with libpam/libnss for not defining APIs to modify entries, in addition to retrieving them. -- (\___(\___(\__ --= 8-) EHM =-- __/)___/)___/) \BS (| e...@gremlin.m5p.com PGP F6B23DE0 |) / \_CS\ | _ -O #include stddisclaimer.h O- _ | / _/ 2477\___\_|_/DC21 03A0 5D61 985B -PGP- F2BE 6526 ABD2 F6B2\_|_/___/3DE0 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#570772: squeeze: partition sizes to small for recommended packages
[Holger Levsen] Default partition sizes are too small for workstation+thin-client-server installation (/opt, /var/ and /usr/ are too full). The cause is probably that all recommended packages are installed, and this require more space. There are three strategies for solving this: - Clean up recommends in Debian packages, to avoid installing so many packages. An example of such issue is fluid-soundfont-gm recommending fluid-soundfont-gs, while we only want to install one of them. - Change how we install packages, asking tasksel and other parts of d-i to not install recommended packages. I believe this is straight forward, but then we do not get the recommended packages we might want to have installed. - Extend partition sizes to make room for the extra packages, which will increase the disk space requirement and make it harder for us testing the installation in virtual machines (I do not have more space to spend on the virtual disk. :). I suggest we try to implement them in that order, and see how far we get by asking for recommended packages to be changed to suggests where it make sense before we decide if we should drop recommended packages during installation or extend the default partition sizes. I suspect changing a few huge packages might be enough (the sound fonts packages are enormous. :). Package: installation-reports configuring console keymap issue: installing in expert mode: when I select German as language, Germany as location and Germany - de...@utf-8 as value for locale, and switch to virtual console, it seems the console is configured to german keymap, correct so far, syslog tells the same. In german we have umlauts (öäüß), which are correctly displayed on the console, when I type them, but it seems they are not completely deleted, when I delete them. When I have typed them in error in an console-command (let's say I typed cat /var/log/syslogä), and delete the umlaut (which leads to cat /var/log/syslog, which should be correct), the command does not work (no result or error message file or directory not found). Reason is: the command which is executed, has an additional character at the position, where the umlaut has been typed and deleted, but this additional character cannot be seen on the console at that time. You can see, that such character exists, when after executing the command you type Arrow up to show the last executed command. There you see an additional character at that position, where the umlaut has been typed and deleted (here it is displayed as an square).
