Bug#535618: Announce of the upcoming quasi-NMU for the mol package
Dear maintainer of mol and Debian translators, Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the mol Debian package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation update in the BTS. I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization bug as well as all other pending translations. (actually, I will not exactly, as the package is for powerpc architectures and I need help to build itbut Gaudenz Steinlin offered his help in doing this) The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in four days, so I will proceed with the NMU. The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail. The package is currently translated to: cs de fr ja nl pt ru sv vi Among these, the following translations are incomplete: vi If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get ANOTHER mail with the translation to update. Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report against the mol package so I can incorporate them in the build. The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Monday, April 05, 2010. If you are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS. The POT file is attached to this mail. If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU and send him/her all updates I receive. Am I the only insane here? Filing RC bugs against the version in unstable because the version in testing is broken causes the version in unstable to not migrate to testing. The net effect is that, in attempting to report the bug, you actually prevent it from being fixed for other testing users. This is extremely unobvious if you don't know how the Debian bug tracking and testing migration process works, and I'm sure you weren't doing it intentionally, but that's why the bug was closed. For the record, next time, the best thing to do is to change the version in the bug report before you send it. But in this case it's not necessary, as the same bug had already been filed several other times. We're definitely aware that the version in testing is broken. We're in the middle of a transition of responsibility for the package, but getting that fixed is a high priority. (Properly speaking, Julien probably could have merged it with those bugs and marked it closed in the relevant version, but that's mostly busy-work since the bug is properly tracked elsewhere.) -- Russ Allbery (r...@debian.org) http://www.eyrie.org/~eagle/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#558686: This bug now happens always
Since about ten days, I can reproduce always this bug using daily builds of squeeze images. Using virtualbox, the bug raises everytime the partitioning scheme is changed. Using only ext3, without lvm or raid. After raising the bug, next time I use the installer, if I choose the same partition scheme (all the directories in a partition, as an example), the bug doesn't happen, but changing to any other scheme it raises once again. I've also been using simple-cdd to do squeeze images, and the bug begun to appear since last tuesday. So there must be some package migrated to testing about those days that make it. Bug#575893: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Occasional flickering
Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon Version: 1:6.12.192-2 Severity: important Since upgrading the radeon video driver to 1:6.12.192-2 and the more or less forced upgrade of the kernel I experience occasional flickering of the screen. Using the old driver and kernel I have not had this problem. If I use the old driver or the old kernel I could not reproduce the issue, but due to the seemingly random behaviour of the flickering I might not have tried long enough, although quite unlikely. The flickering seems to occur most often just after I do some input, but again only randomly. Sometimes three times in 5 seconds, sometimes it does not happen for minutes. However, there are cases where it happens while I'm typing and cases where it happens when idle for a while. During video playback the flickering happens too. However, more often there are short (30-100 pixels or so) white-ish horizontal lines in the video output using mplayer. It with both the 'x11' and 'xv' drivers (of mplayer). I'm not sure whether this is related or not, they started happening with the same version of the video driver. The flickering is extremely annoying. I know, but I meant that migrated to testing affected to the simple-cdd builds that I do using a testing repository. So, since then, the error raises in daily built images and in the isos I generate with simple-cdd. I think that you didn't even try to reproduce the issue: No, I did not, my time is limited so I prefer when the information that I need is provided by the bug submitter (and between this and no answer at all, I hope you still prefer this). What's special in your setup? Is it again a story of default --force options used by apt-get that cupt is not using? See a console log above. Without any options. Fully reproducible with stock Debian system. No, it seems it's rather again a story of personal insults against cupt or/and against me, instead of discussing technical matters. I'm sorry if I sounded that way, it's not my intent. I have nothing considering the issue as a bug to deal with, but I don't think it warrants the important status. Bug#575895: maybe switch from transmission-gtk to something based on libtorrent, e.g. deluge-gtk?
Package: meta-gnome2 Version: 1:2.28+6 Severity: wishlist Hi, it seems that libtorrent (i.e. the rasterbar flavour) is becoming the de-facto standard bittorrent library under Linux, so I'd like to suggest to switch from transmission-gtk (which uses its own library) to some alternative using libtorrent, e.g. deluge-gtk. furthermore, I've read but not yet confirmed that transmission clients are being blocked from some trackers, because of severe bugs in libtransmission. On Mon, 29 Mar 2010, Jari Aalto wrote: You didn't understand. My suggestion does not involve any manual work. It involves code changes to run patch in non-quiet mode by default and to redirect its output in a pipe that dpkg-source stores in memory. The output read by dpkg-source is only displayed if dpkg-source fails to apply the patch. That way you have the full output in case of errors and nothing otherwise (avoiding clutter). Indeed that would be even better. Would you have and estimate when that feature would appear? No. When someone provides a patch. It's not a high priority bug for me. Hi Trent, On Tue, 30 Mar 2010, Trent W. Buck wrote: I'm initially assigning this to dpkg because I don't know what other tests will isolate the problem. I *am* running btrfs, but I can't imagine how that could cause this symptom. My kernel comes from experimental, and is not hand-rolled. You can't imagine how an experimental filesystem could loose your data? I'm sorry, there's no way that we as dpkg maintainers are going to investigate problems that are likely to come from the filesystem itself at this point. It's possible that dpkg triggers some special cases that btrfs doesn't deal well with. I suggest you report your problems to the upstream btrfs maintainers, they are likely interested in a recipe to reproduce the data loss. But this bug should not be assigned to dpkg. You might want to reassign to the kernel but I doubt debian kernel maintainers are interested in dealing with it. IMO bugs against experimental filesystems should go upstream directly. Additionally, upstream of a lot of GNOME accessibility stuff has just been fired by Oracle, so this switch comes at the worst time possible, with very little upstream support. I am not so happy with changing the accessibility backend beneath our asses a few days before releasing squeeze. Personally, I'd like to see squeeze released with at-spi(1) to ensure a decent user experience, and switch to at-spi2 in squeeze+1 development. Bug#575902: udev don't create device-nodes for partitions on a multipath device
Package: udev Version: 151-3 Severity: normal Hello, I have some multipathdevices and for this devices (after configuring in /etc/multipath.conf) there are nodes created under /dev/mapper/ Now i created some partitions on this devices and the partitions are only visible under /dev/mapper/ after creation. If i remove the devices (or reboot) there are only the multipath-devices under /dev/mapper and not the partitions. For testing i have done something like that: multipath -l - /dev/mapper/SAN-SYSTEM is created parted /dev/mapper/SAN-SYSTEM - created one partition, /dev/mapper/SAN-SYSTEMp1 is now visible dmsetup remove SAN-SYSTEMp1 dmsetup remove SAN-SYSTEM multipath -f SAN-SYSTEM - now all links in /dev/mapper for this multipathdevice are gone. multipath - now /dev/mapper/SAN-SYSTEM is created but no node for the partition. If i do a kpartx -a -p p /dev/mapper/SAN-SYSTEM the node for the partition is created. I've had a look at the udev-rule (/etc/udev/multipath.rules) in lenny and i copied it to this sqeeze machine and now udve creates the devicenodes for the partition. Bug#551638: Updated patch for dselect bugs
Raphael Hertzog writes: How can the two patches work together? I mean either the package has been already seen or it's not. The second patch complements to the first one, i.e. the latter depends on and extends the former one. Currently dselect treats all unknown packages as unseen, which is clearly visible by users and causes the behaviour reported in #556889. A new package by definition has no entry in the status file so it's unknown (and thus seen) according to the first patch. What good does the second patch do then? In short the first patch makes dselect to treat all unknown packages as already seen, whereas the second one adds to it ability to distinguish between seen and unseen packages (so with the second patch unknown packages are no longer all seen by default). As you can see, the second patch contains amongst others the following change: -state-direct= state-original= (pkg-want == pkginfo::want_unknown ? pkginfo::want_purge : pkg-want); +state-direct= state-original= (pkg-want == pkginfo::want_unknown seen ? pkginfo::want_purge : pkg-want); ^^^ Otherwise I discussed your patch with Guillem quickly the other day and he would like to store the seen/not-seen information in a common place (i.e. shared by all frontends). I'm not sure there's enough time to implement this in the squeeze timeframe. Guillem mentionnend reverting part of the problematic changes if he can't manage this in time, I'm not sure I like this, I would rather commit something based on your patch. I was aware of Guillem's intentions, after all he put the magic `frontend-unified state file' phrase in the bug's #551638 description :) I think it's a nice idea, but probably not for squeeze. Even if you manage to add such a file into dpkg on time for squeeze, most probably aptitude, synaptic and any other frontend (besides dselect) won't switch to using it so fast. So how about implementing temporary dselect-only solution for now and implementing the proper solution for squeeze + 1? In that case, if we store the data in a frontend-specific manner, the file shall be stored in /var/lib/dselect and not /var/lib/dpkg. Our goal is to prepare a split so new files should go there IMO. That's OK. I've put it in $admindir for simplicity and not to care about locking the file as the any reads/writes are done where dpkg's status database in locked. If you put the file somewhere else probably: - either you would need to add some locking - or the file location would need to depend on $admindir (like $admindir/../dselect/, but it's quite strange) - eventually you would need to drop the --admindir option from dselect (honestly I've never used it). In the mean time, I think committing your first patch would alleviate the most annoying side-effects of the current situation. I second this. I would be in favor of that, Guillem what do you think? Bug#575304: dpkg-dev: In format 3.0 (quilt) - don't use silent option during patching
Raphael Hertzog hert...@debian.org writes: On Mon, 29 Mar 2010, Jari Aalto wrote: You didn't understand. In the mean time, the suggested DH_VERBOSE would provide debugging help. when an improved solutions becomes available, the patch could be removed. In the meanwhile, I've pushed a kibi-debian-experimental branch to: http://git.debian.org/?p=users/kibi/pkg-xorg/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.git Thanks, I'll cherry-pick the changes to my reworked branch where applicable and publish that later today. Available at http://git.debian.org/?p=users/joachim-guest/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.git. This one I consider suitable for merging into the pkg-xorg's repository. At least, it does not screw things up irreversibly like merging the upstream-ubuntu branch would have done. Note that I have not included a fix for the NV_DRIVER_DATE problem since there is no complete consensus, but a patch based on your work is attached. I have made a new upstream tarball, since there were a few more bugfixes since the version in Ubuntu; the changes since then seem safe to me, and I'm already running the updated version. The xserver-xorg-video-nouveau_0.0.15+git20100329+7858345.orig.tar.gz tarball can be checked out from the pristine-tar branch. I have some work pending writing a README.Debian describing kernel requirements, incompatibilities with other drivers (especially the binary Nvidia 3D driver), the need to disable Compiz because it's probably horribly slow (did not test that!) etc. Most things are explained in the nouveau Wiki, but not everyone has permanent Internet access or feels compatible using a text browser in the case X does not start. I have now redone the work, pulling directly from upstream into the upstream-experimental branch. Since we need to make a new tarball anyway to include the ChangeLog file, and the (few) commits since the Ubuntu checkout seem rather safe, I pulled everything up to commit 7858345b. The following one (e2146d3b, Fix for the latest nouveau_class.h.) would break with our libdrm, AFAICS. Also, xsfbs is merged from git://git.debian.org/pkg-xorg/xsfbs. for all other X drivers we ship the pristine tarball, but delete the generated files on clean and run autoreconf on build. For nouveau you could do something similar I think. Could the get-orig-source target be a simple invocation of git archive, until the driver gets a real release? It's not quite as simple since we want the ChangeLog file included, but I edited debian/rules to run autoreconf at build time rather than in the get-orig-source target. Bug#575921: install_packages may write to world writable directory
Package: fai-client Severity: critical Tags: security Tags: pending When using fai softupdate, install_packages writes a list of all packages to the file /var/tmp/package, which is located in a world writeable directory. It also writes to /tmp/packages.list if FAI_DEBSOURCESDIR is set. These problems only affect FAI versions from 3.3 to 3.3.4. In case you use PACKAGES dselect-upgrade (I guess it's not used very often) in package_config it writes to $FAI_ROOT/tmp/dpkg-selections.tmp. Since FAI_ROOT is set to / if you are calling fai softupdate, this is a security problem. This problem also affects older versions. Bug#575898: tuxguitar: throws NoClassDefFoundError exception on startup
Hi reinstalling libswt-gtk-3.5-java did solve the problem, the symbolic link /usr/share/java/swt.jar was missing. I guess there went something wrong on upgrading this or another java package. Tuxguitar's startup script ony looks for swt.jar and swt3.2-gtk.jar in /usr/lib/java/, not for any other swt-*gtk*-jar, so it couldn't find /usr/lib/java/swt-gtk-3.5.1.jar. Bug#568168: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau needs nouveau bits from libdrm
Sven Joachim svenj...@gmx.de (30/03/2010): Available at http://git.debian.org/?p=users/joachim-guest/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau.git. This one I consider suitable for merging into the pkg-xorg's repository. At least, it does not screw things up irreversibly like merging the upstream-ubuntu branch would have done. OK, thanks; will probably look into it tonight. As for getting some user testing, I published binaries and advertised them on Planet Debian in the meanwhile. The xserver-xorg-video-nouveau_0.0.15+git20100329+7858345.orig.tar.gz tarball can be checked out from the pristine-tar branch. Alright, thanks. Agreed. Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#572048: My solution
