Bug#578476: Crashes when a broken GStreamer plugin is installed
On Tue, 2010-04-20 at 20:02 -0400, Ari Pollak wrote: severity 578476 important thanks I don't consider using the public API of gstreamer in a non-broken way to mean that pidgin is doing anything wrong here. Because multiple threads are running while fork() is called and the libpurple threads continue in the new process? Anyway, I don't think this is still a problem since 0.10.28. Nowadays it's not a simple fork() and doing things in a copy of the original process but a fork() and exec() of a different executable, which then talks via pipes to the original process. Or am I missing something here? Oh and if you do the registry updating in the main process the pidgin process will always use a lot more memory... not a good thing either ;) signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#578597: Recommend usage of dpkg-buildflags to initialize CFLAGS and al.
Package: debian-policy Severity: wishlist With dpkg 1.15.7 just uploaded to sid, there's now a dpkg-buildflags command that should be used to initialize CFLAGS, LDFLAGS, CPPFLAGS, FFLAGS, CXXFLAGS. It offers some flexibility for the local admin and for the user to override/extend the default flags used during a package compilation. dpkg-buildpackage continues to export them to not break packages but it exports the value returned by dpkg-buildflags. The desired outcome is that all package grab the values directly from dpkg-buildflags and that we can stop exporting the variables from dpkg-buildpackage. That way calling debian/rules directly and via dpkg-buildpackage should give the same result. Please modify the policy to recommend the usage of dpkg-buildflags (I would suggest to push that policy change just at the start of squeeze+1). CFLAGS=$(shell dpkg-buildflags --get CFLAGS) Note: by using this tool you automatically implement the noopt feature of DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. Cheers, -- Raphaël Hertzog Like what I do? Package: sudo Version: 1.6.9p17-2+lenny1 Severity: important We use the following sudo rule to grant a remote nagios host access via snmp to the command line of a RAID controller. snmpALL=NOPASSWD:/opt/areca/cli64* I don't know if it's needed, but here's the related snmpd.conf line: extend check_areca /opt/areca/check_areca.pl and the sudo line in check_areca.pl: [...] my $areca_cli = '/opt/areca/cli64'; [...] @output = `sudo $areca_cli vsf info`; [...] This worked fine with sudo version 1.6.8p12-4. After a system update yesterday, this stopped working and nagios reports an error. Starting the nagios check from the remote host manually shows this: We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things: #1) Respect the privacy of others. #2) Think before you type. #3) With great power comes great responsibility. [sudo] password for snmp: Command: cli64 vsf info failed, 256, aborting! and the according line in auth.log Apr 21 08:48:47 VUMEM004 sudo: pam_unix(sudo:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=snmp Removing the wildcard or downgrading to 1.6.8p12-4 resolves the problem. One thing I don't yet understand: if I execute the same sudo command locally in a shell as user snmp on the host (not via snmp) I don't get the sudo error. $ whoami snmp $ sudo /opt/areca/cli64 vsf info # Name Raid# Level Capacity Ch/Id/Lun State === 1 ARC-1210-VOL#001 Raid6 4000.0GB 00/00/00 Normal === GuiErrMsg0x00: Success. I don't see the difference, in both cases the script is executed as user snmp. Nethertheless, downgrading or removing the wildcard solves the problem, so I guess it has something to do with the update. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.4 APT prefers stable APT policy: (900, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-2-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages sudo depends on: ii libc6 2.7-18lenny2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libpam-modules1.0.1-5+lenny1 Pluggable Authentication Modules f ii libpam0g 1.0.1-5+lenny1 Pluggable Authentication Modules l sudo recommends no packages. sudo suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#457075: Salomé packaging
Hi Adam, I guess that it is not relevant to run the 5.1.3-4 build again if this version works for you. I am now starting a complete build with all modules. I've built -5 with everything but VISU and NETGENPLUGIN (which don't build), they're at http://lyre.mit.edu/~powell/salome/ . There's lots more to do, but having a version which runs seems like a big milestone. If you could test it, that would be great. This may even be worth uploading, so it gets started in the NEW queue, and if all goes well we can start using the Debian bug reporting system. It works that time, I only had to export the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable in runSalome, I have attached the patch. I could run Salome with the GEOM, MED, SMESH and YACS modules which are loaded by default. The MULTIPTR and HELLO modules work too when added on the command line. The PYHELLO module seems to have a loading problem but that is a developer example. The remaining modules do not seem to have a GUI. I plan to work on the VISU module now once the patches are sent to upstream. Thank you very much for the great work, I am glad to see a first working version in Debian. Bug#578610: network-manager: please make dhcp_timeout and association timeout configurable
Package: network-manager Version: 0.8-1winnie1 Severity: wishlist -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 As in our university the wlan hotspots needs a bit longer to associate a timeout of 25 seconds is too less. However setting it statically for everybody to e.g. 40 seconds is too much in most cases, thus I would like to ask you if you could make this configurable either via a configuration file or via nm-applet (or knetworkmanager). This holds true also for the dhcp timeout, which is per default 45 seconds. I'll need at our university at least a timeout of 60 seconds, which is again, too much for the normal user. Fatal error (6)Aborted I don't have this failure here when trying to install emacs23 (cscope is also installed). Do you know if there are some more conditions to trigger this bug? Actually, installing package emacs23 works fine, only installing emacs23-nox fails with the above assertion. Also, it looks like a memory corruption. Have you tried to reboot the machine? A different kernel? I have tried rebooting, no luck. Installing on my amd64 sid virtual machine works without problem, so looks like it is mips* specific. FYI, this is a loongson2f laptop, so both the kernel and binutils have been patched to work with this kind of machine, and related patches are being review for integration with upstream kernel source. I don't know whether those patches have any impact on this problem. What kind of patch is needed to binutils? Binutils contains the tool to generated the binaries, so if the patch changes the generated code, it means that Debian is simply not compatible with the loongson2f. I noticed the following in the binutils (2.20.1-6) changelog: * Backport fixups of Loongson2F from the trunk. Deng, does rebuilding emacs23 with the current binutils help? Rebuilt with current binutils, now it did make emacs23-nox installable on my loongson2f-based machine. So this should be a loongson2f specific problem. I wonder whether a binNMU will be helpful, as I don't know whether the patch works on non-loongson2f based machine. Feel free to close this bug or handle it as appropriate. Bug#578421: virtual-packages: Retire java-compiler, java2-compiler and java-virtual-machine
Rene Engelhard wrote: On Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 08:33:12PM +0200, Niels Thykier wrote: [java{,2}-compiler] - default-jdk. If used in an alternative in Build-Depends{,-Indep} then pick one of the options (The Java Team recommends default-jdk). And what are you going to do as replacement for whatever Java compiler, I don't care as long as it understands Java 2? Grüße/Regards, René Hi Good point. A java compiler is usually useless without the a backing Java core library, so you probably want to replace it with a JDK. Also please note that we have removed a lot of JVMs from Squeeze; currently Debian has 3 or so left. * openjdk-6 * gcj/gij * sun-java6 (non-free) * default (which is either openjdk-6 or gcj/gij) As I recall there is also a JVM implemented in .NET or so, but it does not identify itself via one of the javaX-runtime (nor the java-compiler ones) and I cannot remember its name offhand. Aside from the mono JVM (which I do not really know), all of them can run Java5 code[1], so basically it is useless to have both java-compiler and java2-compiler. On a related note: it appears that only sun-java6 provides java2-compiler (even though all others could provide it as well). If I was to replace a java{,2}-compiler to mean Any java compiler I would use: default-jdk | gcj-jdk | sun-java6-jdk [3] But I would definitely consider only using default-jdk (especially for Suggests). While that may seem a bit strange as replacement for Any compiler consider the following: default-jdk is either openjdk-6-jdk or gcj-jdk openjdk-6 is based on the same source as sun-java6 openjdk-6 is available any architecture where sun-java6 is. gcj-jdk is inferior to openjdk-6 (not only due to [1]) While sun-java6 is still superior to openjdk-6 in some cases, I believe this is only a runtime thing and not a compile issue. So by using default-jdk you get the best compiler we got and it is shorter. Of course there are users using sun-java6-jdk which will not like if apt pulls in a second JDK, so for Recommends+Depends it may be worth to use the alternatives. With a little grep-dctrl magic I noticed we 1 absolute dependency on javaX-compiler (laby), four Recommends (robocode, jde, jython, mmake) and 5 Suggests (ant, ant1.7, cup, openoffice.org-dev-doc, lab). There are also 6 Build-Depends(-Indep) cases, but I already covered those. All in all we got a total of 15 (9 + 6) uses of java-compiler and java2-compiler, so they do not appear to be widely used. ~Niels [1] gcj/gij does not implement the full Java5 API. [2] Should be updated, since gcj is a transitional package. [3] You could add openjdk-6-jdk to this list, but on architectures where openjdk-6 is available, it will be pulled by default-jdk. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#517627: Alteon NIC firmware
Ben Hutchings wrote: Jamie, You appear to be hosting the Alteon NIC firmware source and tools at http://alteon.shareable.org/, but links to those subdirectories yield 'Forbidden' error pages. Is there a reason why these are not available, or is this accidental? A configuration accident as you correctly guessed. Indexing was turned off. They are all readable now. If you build the firmware from the last source version, using the Linux-hosted GCC 2.95 (needing firmware.patch), it even runs a bit faster than the original Acenic binary :-) Somehow I never got around to submitting my version to the kernel. Don't ask me to revisit it now. The tools etc. were originally collected for a custom firmware projects (it was a popular board for that), and I decided to host them because Alteon were shutting down, and as a general principle of keeping source around. I'm not sure if the license would satisfy DFSG. It's pretty open as these things go. Lots of people hacked this chip, Tigon2, in interesting ways because of it's relatively unique openness at the time, and were disappointed when its successor, the Tigon3, wasn't open at all. It is quite a versatile dual-CPU gigE chip. I wrote on the top-level index Look at the source files yourself to understand any licensing restrictions on their use. Alteon's license may be summarised like this: you may share and develop the firmware, but it is only for use with Alteon NIC products. That last bit might refer to just advice, or a DFSG-incompatible restriction, I don't remember which. If it breaks you get to keep both pieces :-) -- Jamie -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

[...] jetty (6.1.18-1) unstable; urgency=low [Ludovic Claude] * Add myself to Uploaders. * Change the build dependency on java-gcj to default-jdk. ... So it would appear that it was deliberately changed from default-jdk. Although the request appears reasonable - perhaps gcj works again for jetty? Is really whole openjdk-6-jdk needed or just suffices to have i.e. openjdk-6-doc in Build-Depends for arch all packages ? I did dpkg-buildpackage -B -uc on kfreebsd-amd64. Is my current (commited) modification, though I'm unsure if resetting the umask to the previous value is really necessary... Yeah... me too. Resetting the previous value of umask is just a prevention decision because through the program code a lot of files and directories are created. It is necessary to study if other files/directories depends on concrete permissions so that a custom umask value would corrupt them. For all these reasons, I think current patch is a good solution. I have to read more slowly the piuparts code to understand it better, so I'll take a look to this issue. The NM plugin is designed for end user remote-access, so people _will_ use weak passwords. I won't implement PSK authentication in the NM plugin, this is a political decision. That is a shame, I guess I have to implement it myself or find something else that does. openswan-nm looks like it might do that actually. I hope you don't mind, but I think this bug should stay open to document your (upstream) decision to not allow PSK support. I would suggest that password strength checking and notifications would address your concerns about people using weak passwords. Please keep in mind that the NM plugin supports IKEv2 tunnels only. IKEv2 is not widely deployed yet, are you sure your customer uses IKEv2? I did not know that.
