Bug#578997: devscripts: bts.pl - [man] use normal single quotes and not backtick
Package: devscripts Version: 2.10.64 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch The manual page reads: submitter bug [bug ...] submitter-email Change the submitter address of a bug or a number of bugs, with `!' meaning `use the address on the current email as the new submitter address'. [...] In some places like above, there is uneven quotes that start with a backtick. Please prefer normal single-single or double-double quote pairs. For more information aboout the use of quotes, refer to: ASCII and Unicode quotation marks by Markus Kuhn http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/quotes.html Summary: Please do not use the ASCII grave accent (0x60) as a left quotation mark together with the ASCII apostrophe (0x27) as the corresponding right quotation mark (as in `quote'). Your text will otherwise appear rather strange with most modern fonts (e.g., on Windows and Mac systems). Only old X Window System fonts and some old video terminals show ASCII 0x60/0x27 as left and right quotation marks, while most modern systems follow the ISO and Unicode standards instead. If you can use only ASCII’s typewriter characters, then use the apostrophe character (0x27) as both the left and right quotation mark (as in 'quote'). If you can use Unicode characters, nice directional quotation marks are available in the form of characters U+2018, U+2019, U+201C, and U+201D (as in ‘quote’ or “quote”). Bug#578999: devscripts: bts.pl - Use qx() in place of backtics
Package: devscripts Version: 2.10.64 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch The following patch suggest using qx() shell call syntax in place of backtics. Motivation: 1) Improved redability. Cases like: echo this `date '+%Y%m%d'` = echo this $(date '+%Y%m%d') 2) No font problems. On a small 10 inch netbook the backtics are difficult to distinguish from other charatcers. 3) Easier typing. In non-US keyboards the backtics are not in so convenient location. Accessing the backtick requires acrobatic skills with a combination of AltGr + KEY + SPACE The patch is against Git bc4d573 -- Package-specific info: --- /etc/devscripts.conf --- --- ~/.devscripts --- Not present -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_DK.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_DK.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages devscripts depends on: ii dpkg-dev 1.15.7.1 Debian package development tools ii libc6 2.10.2-6 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii perl 5.10.1-12 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction Versions of packages devscripts recommends: ii at3.1.12-1 Delayed job execution and batch pr ii bsd-mailx [mailx] 8.1.2-0.20100314cvs-1 simple mail user agent ii bzr 2.1.1-1easy to use distributed version co ii curl 7.20.0-3+b1Get a file from an HTTP, HTTPS or ii cvs 1:1.12.13-12 Concurrent Versions System ii dctrl-tools 2.14 Command-line tools to process Debi ii debian-keyring [d 2010.03.31 GnuPG (and obsolete PGP) keys of D ii dillo [www-browse 2.0-1 Small and fast web browser ii dput 0.9.5.1Debian package upload tool ii elinks [www-brows 0.12~pre5-2advanced text-mode WWW browser ii epiphany-browser 2.29.3-1 Intuitive GNOME web browser ii equivs2.0.8 Circumvent Debian package dependen ii fakeroot 1.14.4-1 Gives a fake root environment ii git-core 1:1.7.0-1 fast, scalable, distributed revisi ii gnupg 1.4.10-2 GNU privacy guard - a free PGP rep ii iceweasel [www-br 3.5.8-1Web browser based on Firefox ii konqueror [www-br 4:4.3.4-1 KDE 4's advanced file manager, web ii libauthen-sasl-pe 2.14-1 Authen::SASL - SASL Authentication ii libcrypt-ssleay-p 0.57-2 Support for https protocol in LWP ii libjson-perl 2.21-1 Perl module to parse and convert t ii libparse-debcontr 2.005-2Easy OO parsing of Debian control- ii libsoap-lite-perl 0.711-1Perl implementation of a SOAP clie ii libterm-size-perl 0.2-4+b1 Perl extension for retrieving term ii libtimedate-perl 1.2000-1 collection of modules to manipulat ii liburi-perl 1.54-1 module to manipulate and access UR ii libwww-perl 5.834-1Perl HTTP/WWW client/server librar ii libyaml-syck-perl 1.07-1 fast, lightweight YAML loader and ii links [www-browse 2.2-1+b1 Web browser running in text mode ii lintian 2.3.4 Debian package checker ii lsb-release 3.2-23 Linux Standard Base version report ii lynx-cur [www-bro 2.8.8dev.2-1 Text-mode WWW Browser with NLS sup ii lzma 4.43-14Compression method of 7z format in ii mailx 1:20081101-2 Transitional package for mailx ren ii man-db2.5.7-2on-line manual pager ii mercurial 1.5.1-2scalable distributed version contr ii midori [www-brows 0.1.8-1fast, lightweight graphical web br ii openssh-client [s 1:5.3p1-3 secure shell (SSH) client, for sec ii opera [www-browse 10.10.4742.gcc4.qt3The Opera Web Browser ii patch 2.6-2 Apply a diff file to an original ii patchutils0.3.1-2Utilities to work with patches ii sensible-utils0.0.4 Utilities for sensible alternative ii strace4.5.19-2 A system call tracer ii subversion1.6.9dfsg-1Advanced version control system ii unzip 6.0-4 De-archiver for .zip files ii w3m [www-browser] 0.5.2-4WWW browsable pager with excellent ii wdiff 0.5-21 Compares two files word by word ii wget 1.12-2 retrieves files from the web ii xemacs21-mule [ww 21.4.22-3

Bug#575031: [Pkg-ltsp-devel] Bug#575031: creating virtual devices for fuse mounts?
hi, Am Freitag, den 23.04.2010, 13:08 -0700 schrieb Vagrant Cascadian: greetings. i'm trying to figure out how feasible it is to create some sort of virtual device for mountpoints mounted with fuse. i'm hoping this is the appropriate place for such a message... if not, please suggest a better place for such a question. as best i can figure out, KDE and LXDE use hal or udev/udisks properties for their file manager to recognize mounted devices or devices available for mounting. with fuse mounts, there is no associated device or udev event, as far as i can tell. in particular, i'm working with ltspfs, which is a remote fuse filesystem used for LTSP thin-clients. ltspfs on the client-side has udev rules to detect device insertion/removal, and then connects to the server that the user is logged into, and sets up a fuse mount server-side that the user then accesses. with GNOME, it recognizes mounts done in /media/, and so ltspfs mounts remote devices in /media and it gets recognized by GNOME's filemanager. but KDE and LXDE don't handle mounts in /media in the same way, so ltspfs mounts that happen in /media and are not recognized by the filemanager (other than simply browsing to the mountpoint, like any other filesystem). a bug reported against ltspfs in debian: http://bugs.debian.org/575031 is there some way to emulate a device, creating a virtual device in the hal/udev/udisks/devicekit namespace? a short-term approach that could be used, or a longer-term vision for how to handle these sorts of situations? with hal it was possible to use hal-add-device and a script to create a virtual device [1] but hal is dead beef upstream. take a look at what the udisks package ships in /lib/udev/rules.d/, it should be possible to write a rule that makes udisks create a virtual disk here. ciao oli [1] http://people.canonical.com/~ogra/ltspfs-hal-root.png signature.asc Description: Dies ist ein digital signierter Nachrichtenteil

Bug#579001: Option to hide nagstamon if everything is ok
Package: nagstamon Version: 0.9.2-2 Severity: wishlist Tags: upstream, patch -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, please allow me to track a bug report here that I already filed upstream as http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailaid=2972096group_id=236865atid=1101373 I’m just monitoring a small server that usually is just fine, therefore, most of the time I do not care about nagios or nagstamon. I’d appreciate an option to make nagstamon hide the status when everything is ok. This would require a way to fireup the nagstamon configuration from command line (e.g. nagstamon --configure), similar to what mail-notification does. The upstream bug report contains a series of patches implementing this feature, together with an option to turn it off. As I have to patch each release of nagstamon, I can provide an updated patch if needed. However the problems seems has been solved in upstream, and now our LXDE packaging team member Nikolas Poniros is working on this. Bug#578764: 'commit -a' safety (was: Re: Please default to 'commit -a' when no changes were added)
Jonathan Nieder jrnie...@gmail.com writes: Starting out, I can see how it would be comforting to people if ‘git commit’ would default to -a behavior if they ignore the index. That is logically a different operation, though, so it would also send a wrong message and make it harder in the long run to get used to the interface. I agree that making 'git commit' do 'git commit -a' if there are no staged changes would be a bad change. Instead, I think it would be better to focus on making the error message more helpful. Right now there is a screen full of status before the advice, which might make it easy to get scared before reading it. Here’s a very rough patch to suppress that screenful. What do you think? It's a pity that people didn't concentrate on this part: improving error message... On a bit unrelated note what I'd like to have is 'git commit -a' (optional) safety against accidentally getting rid of staged changes. I'd like for 'git commit -a' to *fail* if there are staged changes for tracked files, excluding added, removed and renamed files. If you have some staged changes you would get an error message: $ git add tracked-file $ git commit -a fatal: There are staged changes to tracked files hint: To commit staged changes, use 'git commit' hint: To commit all changes, use 'git commit -f -a' Perhaps this behavior would be turned on only if some config option, like commit.preserveIndex or something like that is set to true... -- Jakub Narebski Poland ShadeHawk on #git -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#543196: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the tunapie package
Dear maintainer of tunapie and Debian translators, Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the tunapie Debian package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation update in the BTS. I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization bug as well as all other pending translations. The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in four days, so I will proceed with the NMU. The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail. The package is currently translated to: cs de fr ja nl pt ru sv Among these, the following translations are incomplete: none If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get ANOTHER mail with the translation to update. Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report against the tunapie package so I can incorporate them in the build. The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Friday, April 30, 2010. If you are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS. The POT file is attached to this mail. If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU and send him/her all updates I receive. Otherwise the following will happen (or already has): Monday, April 19, 2010 : send the first intent to NMU notice to the package maintainer. Package: dpkg-dev Version: 1.15.7.1 Severity: wishlist Hi, It's currently auto creating patches for things that changed compared to the upstream version. On Mon, Apr 19 2010 at 14:57, Andrea Bolognani wrote: It seems like Xorg is undergoing a lot of updates and changes, lately, so I wonder — like Hannes did — if the bug wasn’t triggered by some bug in the underlying infrastructure, with video drivers being the most likely cause due to KMS and related changes. It crashed here after submitting a bug report for gconf2 however after submitting the bugreport for reportbug it did not crash. I tried it with gconf2 too, and works fine here. The gdb backtrace makes me think there is a problem with your GTK+ stack, and since you're using testing that might be the main cause. Did you try to contact the GTK+ maintainer? I'm adding them in the loop, so they can inspect it (I'll reassign to them in some days in case of no reply will come). No, I did not contact them as I thought - inspecting the generated eror report - that the bug did not have anything to do with GTK2. Maybe I overlooked something. Well, reporbug is in python, the traceback is for C code, inside pango/glib/libgtk, so the problem seems to be in the libraries reportbug uses not in reportbug itself. That seems to be it, since the attached patch fixes the issue at least for me on my HP Compaq 615. I'm raising the severity because of two reasons: * on this machine the Fn-keys for adjusting the brightness don't work, so with g-p-m not working either I have no way to adjust the display brightness. Combined with the fact that the brightness is set to minimal after suspending this makes the machine unusable until a reboot. * the Archlinux bug report[1] mentions two laptops with broken brightness control - so I think we have at least four *very* different machines where brightness control doesn't work without hal: ThinkPads, Macbooks, Toshiba Notebooks and HP Compaq Notebooks. Like Brian Johnson[2] I think that more or less all laptops have lost brightness functionality in g-p-m. However, if the maintainer disagrees, don't hesitate to lower the severity. While we don't want to make it _easy_ for users to shoot themselves in the foot, neither do we want to make it difficult or impossible for them to get the tool to do things that _might_ be a mistake. And what's the risk here? Accidentally committing too much is not a destructive change, and can be easily undone. Where do we stop here with the hand-holding? Would you also want a fatal error here?: $ git add foo $ git commit -- bar fatal: There are staged changes to tracked files IMO, the fact that the commit message editor is populated with a list of changed files that will be included in the commit is enough for people to see what's actually going to happen. Bug#441370: closed by Fathi Boudra f...@debian.org (reply to f...@debian.org) (stellarium-data: Contain architecture specific files in 'all' package)
[Fathi Boudra] not a bug, .mo files aren't arch specific. I'm fine with you refusing to fix this, but thought it best to get the facts right. The .mo files are architecture specific. They are either little or big endian, depending on the architecture they were generated on. As far as I know, the gettext library is able to read files using both endian types, but read the non-native endian type files slower than those with native endianess. So this bug is about speed, not the ability to read the files. Notice the 'little endian' output from file: % file /usr/share/locale/el/LC_MESSAGES/stellarium.mo /usr/share/locale/el/LC_MESSAGES/stellarium.mo: GNU message catalog (little endian), revision 0, 488 messages % See URL: http://www.gnu.org/software/hello/manual/gettext/MO-Files.html for details. Hi Petter, On Sat, Apr 24, 2010 at 2:27 PM, Petter Reinholdtsen I'm fine with you refusing to fix this, but thought it best to get the facts right. The .mo files are architecture specific. I don't refuse to fix this bug. As I'm preparing a NMU for stellarium, I cleaned up its bugs a bit. About this issue specifically, there's many packages [1] in the archive shipping locale files in arch. independent packages. I think a better approach is to move the discussion on debian-devel mailing list and mass-bug filling the related packages, depending of the result of the discussion. What do you think ? [1] Note: I didn't checked the exact number. Cheers, Fathi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#441370: closed by Fathi Boudra f...@debian.org (reply to f...@debian.org) (stellarium-data: Contain architecture specific files in 'all' package)
[Fathi Boudra] I don't refuse to fix this bug. As I'm preparing a NMU for stellarium, I cleaned up its bugs a bit. Fine with me. This issue do not affect my usage of this great package. :) About this issue specifically, there's many packages [1] in the archive shipping locale files in arch. independent packages. I think a better approach is to move the discussion on debian-devel mailing list and mass-bug filling the related packages, depending of the result of the discussion. What do you think ? This has been discussed on -devel already, and I do not see the advantage of bringing it up again. See URL: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/01/msg00452.html for the start of the last thread. Not sure if any conclusion was reached nor if anything was added to the developers reference to document best practice. I think in the face of the problems revolving around 10.02 described above in this bug we can ignore snapshot.d.o since it would only resolve in issues and bug-reports about 10.02 where we then have to point out that 10.04 is already in debian. The important difference is that --no-add-needed is the default behavior of of GNU binutils-gold. Please provide all needed libraries to the linker when building your executables. How to do explicitly link against libfreetype6 (or maybe libfontconfig1) library? I've been unable to do so correctly. Well, you are trying to build mensis in a way which isn't really supported. It expects to dlopen freetype rather than link with it, and that's all the Makefile/configure script was written to handle. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#564943: scrotwm key bindings
On Sat, Apr 24 2010 at 15:23, Andrea Bolognani wrote: I think it's not video drivers, because I tried to run scrotwm with two X servers -- one on Nvidia and another on ATI with the same result. In both cases it was 1:7.3+20 from stable. Scrotwm itself was installed on both stable and testing. So, if I understand correctly, you have a mixed stable/testing setup, with Xorg from stable and scrotwm from testing Yes. and another one which is pure stable, except from scrotwm, which is obviously not available from stable? Yes, it is pure stable, but it acts as an X server only. All the clients, including window managers are installed on the first box, which is mixed stable/testing. So, as I mentioned above, I have two X servers from stable with two different drivers and one scrotwm from testing, which connects to X server via tcp socket. Could it be that this mixed setup is the cause of the bug? I’ve ran scrotwm on several pure testing setups, some with Intel and some other with Nvidia graphics, without hitting the bug. Today I set up a container with pure testing inside and tried to run scrotwm from it. Same thing. So, it looks like you're right -- X server upgrade may help. But now scrotwm is the only window manager I tried which does not work properly with xorg from stable. Maybe we should not work around and leave the bug unsolved, while we have a test case. -- ~dd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
