Bug#603966: aribas: request to unblock

Care to explain why pre-depends is the right fix here? The version of aribas in squeeze does not depend on emacsen-common, the one in lenny does. Both of these versions install fine, however when upgrading a lenny system (wihout any emacsen installed) to squeeze we get the following: Preparing to replace aribas 1.63-2 (using .../aribas_1.64-3_amd64.deb) ... ERROR: emacsen-common being used before being configured. ERROR: This is likely a bug in the aribas package, which needs to ERROR: add one of the appropriate dependencies. ERROR: See /usr/share/doc/emacsen-common/debian-emacs-policy.gz ERROR: for details. dpkg: warning: subprocess old pre-removal script returned error exit status 2 Now this might be due to some overly eager check of dpkg. I didn't try to investigate this; the change in aribas_1.64-4 fixes this for the squeeze release without having to touch dpkg. As soon as we do not have to care anymore for that particular upgrade path we can turn the Pre-Depends back to Depends. Bug#603997: mono-gmcs: mono is locale dependent (can't compile unicode things when not in a unicode locale)
Package: mono-gmcs Version: 2.6.7-3ubuntu1 Severity: important When compiling a program with a unicode character in a string literal, or embedding files with unicode characters as a resource, Mono does not interpret the unicode characters properly, unless the locale is set to a unicode one, e.g. en_SG.utf8 This causes issues with builds done in buildds as the locale is not set in thoes buildds, or at least not set to a unicode one. There have been several cases of Monodevelop generated Gtk+ sources containing Unicode characters in their literals that require manual patching to fix. Another issue is with Banshee's embedding of translators names/e-mails as an XML resource, resulting in misinterpretation of the string when Banshee is compiled in a non-unicode locale. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers maverick-updates APT policy: (500, 'maverick-updates'), (500, 'maverick-security'), (500, 'maverick-backports'), (500, 'maverick'), (400, 'maverick-proposed') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.37-rc2-hyper1 (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_SG.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_SG.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages mono-gmcs depends on: ii libc62.12.1-0ubuntu9 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libmono-corlib2.0-cil2.6.7-3ubuntu1 Mono core library (for CLI 2.0) ii libmono-system2.0-cil2.6.7-3ubuntu1 Mono System libraries (for CLI 2.0 ii mono-runtime 2.6.7-3ubuntu1 Mono runtime Versions of packages mono-gmcs recommends: ii pkg-config0.25-1 manage compile and link flags for mono-gmcs suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#603936: Wrong spanish encoding in Debian installer
Quoting Samuel Thibault (sthiba...@debian.org): reassign 603936 tasksel tags 603936 + patch thanks Hello, Daniel Rodríguez, le Thu 18 Nov 2010 17:43:07 +0100, a écrit : Sorry, here it is. It seems the spanish translation file's utf-8 encoding got damaged by being treated with some msg tool in non-utf-8 locale. Here is a patch which should fix it. I'm not sure this is the problem. Contrary to what I mentioned yesterday, the problem is not fixed in tasksel 2.83. Indeed the tasks/po file is UTF-8 encoded, at least the usefuml part of it, but the PO file header announces it as ISO-8859-15. Additionnally, the obsolete strings, at the end of the file, do contain some ISO-stone-age encoded characters. In short, the file is a mix of UTF-8 and ISO. I just dropped the obsolete strings, fixed the file's header and commited this to my local git copy. Needs to be pushed. I'd really love seeing people abandon the stone age ISO encodings:-| signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#603974: live-installer should depend and use console-setup-udeb
In data venerdì 19 novembre 2010 00:47:56, Samuel Thibault ha scritto: Marco Amadori, le Fri 19 Nov 2010 00:29:59 +0100, a écrit : As it is now, live-installer fails in providing a proper keyboard configuration in the installed system, in fact it fails in propagating kbd-chooser debconf values. Something changed in how console-setup-udeb is handled in d-i, and for squeeze i found that depending on it and invoking the postinst would succeed. I don't understand this. How was console-setup-udeb involved in live-installer before? I didn't checked how it was handled before, maybe something changed in base- installer, of which live-installer exploits some helpers. As I understand your sentences, live-installer seems to be using the kbd-chooser udeb, and installing console-setup in the installer system. It does not do that directly, my guessing is that it was automatically cared of before. If so, then the bug is rather in console-setup, not in console-setup-udeb. I'm pretty sure it isn't the case, I checked what console-setup does in the target and it is doing it right, but its debconf database it is empty (I mean default values). From what I understood kbd-chooser ask keyboard layout question and translate its results to console-setup debconf values, then console-setup-udeb propagates them to the target system. auto-install udeb do something similar as my patch does. It depends on console-setup-udeb and explicitly calls its postinst. Depending on console-setup-udeb is just a convoluted way to fix things, as I guess what its postinst does to fix this in your case is just doing what console-setup is supposed to be doing in the installed system, already... This is probably true. My patch seems hackish even to me although it works, I hope that someone with a deeper understanding of debian-installer internals could provide a cleaner fix if possible. Bug#603798: debian-installer: /tmp is not created with 777 mode when doing manual disk partitionning
VALETTE Eric RD-MAPS-REN, le Fri 19 Nov 2010 09:20:59 +0100, a écrit : If you don't want to fix it, I do not care. We DO want to fix it. But we can't fix something that we don't understand. When we try to reproduce this bug we just get proper permissions. So there must be something that we are doing differently. It could even be a completely unrelated detail like language, chosen debian mirror, etc. That's why we need precise details to be able to reproduce the issue, and thus fix it. I seems, you should know weher you do the chmod 1777 /tmp in the installer and look if there are installation path that do not use this path. We do now where that is done, and we do already know that there are not supposed to be installation paths where it's not done. Putting it another way: we have already stared deeply at the code, and didn't find any bug with it, but apparently there's one, so we need to know which case make it happen. Bug#575582: openssh-server: privsep directory disappeared on upgrade
found 575582 1:5.1p1-5 severity 575582 serious affects 575582 upgrade-reports thanks I just ran into this on a remote upgrade. I was upgrading a (fortunately not too remote) machine using ssh + screen from my laptop. When I switched wifi AP and tried to reattach my screen, I couldn't: | $ ssh dreamcoat -t screen -DR | ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host And in auth.log: | sshd[16271]: fatal: Missing privilege separation directory: /var/run/sshd I had to reattach from a VT and continue the upgrade there, until it got to openssh-server's postinst and I could ssh in again. There were pending debconf questions, I couldn't simply wait for it to start working again. I can easily reproduce this in a minimal VM with openssh-server installed. The problem seems to be that /var/run/sshd is removed on unpacking but only recreated in postinst. One cannot ssh in to the machine in-between. I consider this to be release-critical and am bumping the bug appropriately. Bug#604002: network-manager-vpnc: vpnc always crashes when enabled
Package: network-manager-vpnc Version: 0.8.1-1 Severity: important Tags: upstream I am running Debain Sid. The KDE system tray utility knetworkmanager (package as network-manager-kde) provides the ability to control a computer's network connections via the network-manager framework. One part of this framework is support for Cisco VPN. I have configured a Cisco VPN connection and the knetworkmanager tray shows this option when I right-click on the system-tray icon. By default, the VPN is not enabled, but can be enabled by selecting the VPN in the knetworkmanager display (shown when I right-click on the system-tray item). When I enable the Cisco VPN, the knetworkmanager crashes. It does this every time I enable the Cisco VPN. It is unclear to me whether the problem is with the network-manager-kde package or the network-manager-vpnc package. The Cisco settings I have configured has worked in the past (with a previous version of the software), so I suspect that either the API of the vpnc package has changed or the KDE network-manager package has introduced a bug. I have seen a couple of upstream bugs that sound similar to this issue in the KDE bug tracker. They are for different distributions, so I believe this issue is not Debian-specific. Bug#604004: package Description: doesn't mention XSL-FO
Package: docbook-xsl-ns Version: 1.75.2+dfsg-5 Severity: wishlist It's common to abbreviate “XSL Formatting Objects” as XSL-FO: both English Wikipedia uses this term (say, [1]), and the XSL 1.1 specification [2] makes a reference to it. Yet, while DocBook 5 XSL certainly allows one to produce XSL-FO, the straightforward ‘$ apt-cache search xsl-fo ’ search has no mention of the package. Indeed, the description reads: The stylesheets provide XSLT transformations for (X)HTML, WordML, HTML Help, JavaHelp, Man page (nroff), Website, Eclipse Platform Help file and Formatting Object (FO) output. The latter can be further processed to a number of print formats using FOP or TeX-based tools. Therefore, I suggest the following change: The stylesheets provide XSLT transformations for (X)HTML, WordML, HTML Help, - JavaHelp, Man page (nroff), Website, Eclipse Platform Help file and Formatting - Object (FO) output. The latter can be further processed to a number of print - formats using FOP or TeX-based tools. + JavaHelp, Man page (nroff), Website, Eclipse Platform Help file and XSL + Formatting Objects (XSL-FO) output. Bug#604007: Bad line reading interface information
package: isc-dhcp-client version: 4.1.1-P1-12 hi! I kept getting the following error message from dhclient after some uptime: Bad line reading interface information Turns out the error occurs parsing /proc/net/dev. While the syntax of /proc/net/dev seemed ok, i had absurdly high counter values on one interface: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr de:ad:be:ef:ca:fe UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:4158662212925880 errors:24951973277555280 dropped:8317324425851760 overruns:4158662212925880 frame:20793311064629400 TX packets:4158662212925880 errors:16634653146670815 dropped:0 overruns:4158662212925880 carrier:8317324425851760 collisions:20793311064629400 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:4158662212925880 (3.6 PiB) TX bytes:4158662212925880 (3.6 PiB) Interrupt:44 after resetting these counters to 0 (module unload/reload), dhclient works again. I don't know where these counter values come from, it's probably a module bug. Then again the values as such are totally valid and theoretically possible. I think dhclient should use the same data type/supported ranges for these counters if it wants to parse /proc/net/dev. btw: i tried to configure a different interface, not eth0. I.e. skipping parsing the rest of lines of interfaces dhclient doesn't deal with might be a better strategy regarding fault tolerance. regards, Chris -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#604008: package Description: doesn't mention neither XSL-FO, nor RTF, etc.
Package: fop Version: 1:1.0.dfsg-3 Severity: wishlist It's common to abbreviate “XSL Formatting Objects” as XSL-FO: both English Wikipedia uses this term (say, [1]), and the XSL 1.1 specification [2] makes a reference to it. Yet, while FOP may consume XSL-FO, and produce a wide variety of presentations, the straightforward ‘$ apt-cache search xsl-fo ’ search results in no mention of the package (neither the search for, say, “rtf” results in one.) Indeed, the description reads: Description: XML to PDF Translator FOP is a print formatter driven by XSL formatting objects. It is a Java application that reads a formatting object tree and then turns it into a PDF document. The formatting object tree can be in the form of an XML document (output by an XSLT engine like xalan) or can be passed in memory as a DOM Document or (in the case of xalan) SAX events. Therefore, I suggest the description to be changed as follows: Description: FOP is an XML formatter driven by XSL Formatting Objects (XSL-FO.) FOP is a Java application that reads a formatting object tree and then turns it into a wide variety of output presentations (including AFP, PCL, PDF, PNG, PostScript, RTF, TIFF, and plain text), or displays the result on-screen. . Bug#603741: geeqie: too much memory use: throshing
Hi Dne Thu, 18 Nov 2010 22:57:40 -1000 (HST) Ryo Furue fu...@hawaii.edu napsal(a): Hi Michal, Thank you for your quick response! | Package: geeqie | Version: 1:1.0-7 | Severity: grave | | This is no way a grave bug. Um, but thrashing is a severe problem. (Sorry I misspelt it in my subject line.) No matter what the parameter values are in Preferences, geeqie (or any other application for that matter) should not cause thrashing. At the very least, geeqie should detect the scarcity of memory and exit before causing thrashing. Well this is problematic: 1. It is hard to detect this situation generally. 2. If it would exit automatically, there would be dozens of bug reports why does it crash. Anyway definition for grave is makes the package in question unusable by most or all users, or causes data loss, or introduces a security hole allowing access to the accounts of users who use the package.. This situation is definitely not affecting most or all users and also does not cause data loss nor introduce security hole. | If you have limited memory resources, please decrease decoded | image cache in preferences. I'm sure it will help you. Thanks! A quick test suggests that that solves the problem. | However the default could be a bit lower for systems which do | not have much memory. To avoid thrashing no matter what the default value is, the cache size may better be determined dynamically unless the user explicitly overrides it. Yes, that's basically what I filed in upstream bugzilla. Feel free to add your comments there. -- Michal Čihař | http://cihar.com | http://blog.cihar.com signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Package: mini-buildd-bld Severity: minor Hi, newer (squeeze) schroot version produce E: OUTPUT-like output for anything written to stderr by any setup.d hook script. 99mini-buildd does log some lines (to stderr). Bug#604014: The options variable in dupload.conf is undocumented
Package: dupload Version: 2.6.6 Severity: minor I was trying to setup dupload to use an alternative ssh identity. At last I discovered that this can be achieved by setting the variable options, as shown below: $cfg{'foo'} = { fqdn = debian.mydomain.com, method = scpb, incoming = /mydir/incoming, dinstall_runs = 1, nonus = 1, options = -i ~/.ssh/id_dsa.other, }; I cannot find any reference to this variable in the standard documentation: man dupload.conf info dupload.conf /usr/share/doc/dupload/ I suggest that package documentation should be updated. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: openssl Severity: normal I've tried to research what's likely to actually be vulnerable to this issue, in terms of Debian packages or other commonly used third party apps, but couldn't find anything. Bug#603938: debian-installer: The 1st CD doesn't contain desktop nor laptop tasks
Hi, On Fri, 19 Nov 2010, Holger Levsen wrote: Result: only mail server, SSH server and standart system are available. Unfortunately, that's expected result. As discussed on So let's close this bug. There is no need and gain to keep this bug report open (against general at least), CDs wont grow in size and I'm pretty sure the desktop install sizes wont shrink. Ubuntu is taking steps to ensure that their desktop still fits in a single CD (that's the reason why the changelogs are shrinked in the ubuntu packages now, some images are recompressed, etc.). So there are possibilities, and we can tweak the tasks and the dependencies in some cases. But it's probably too late for squeeze and like most tasks touching lots of packages, it will be difficult to find someone leading such a project. Bug#603952: about the ICQ failure
Version: 2.7.3-1+squeeze1 Hi, I had some other .aol.com server set up which also died a couple of days ago, and after I changed it to login.icq.com, it worked, but not with SSL. I also tried the clientLogin option, but that's also still broken (has been for months now). Upstream web site (pidgin.im) front page says 2.7.5 fixes issues, and the changelog says: * New ICQ accounts default to proper ICQ servers. Old accounts using one of the old default servers will be silently migrated to use the proper servers. * ICQ accounts using clientLogin now use the correct ICQ servers. This is separate from the server settings mentioned above. Sadly no ticket references... I found: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/12911 where they closed it as fixed by saying turn off SSL. GD.pm is in libgd-gd2-noxpm-perl: /usr/lib/perl5/GD.pm libgd-gd2-perl: /usr/lib/perl5/GD.pm ... it is also found in a couple of other packages, which I think are all unrelated here: libgd-securityimage-perl: /usr/share/perl5/GD/SecurityImage/GD.pm libpdf-api2-perl: /usr/share/perl5/PDF/API2/Resource/XObject/Image/GD.pm libtemplate-plugin-gd-perl: /usr/share/perl5/Template/Plugin/GD.pm pdl: /usr/lib/perl5/PDL/IO/GD.pm wml: /usr/lib/wml/perl/lib/i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi/WML/GD.pm As a sidenote (I can fill a separate wishlist bug on this if you like) - I think it would be better to have springgraph in a separate springgraph package, on which signing-party depends. The man-page of apt-rdepends explicitely mentions springgraph: -d, --dotty dotty takes a list of packages on the command line and gener- ates output suitable for use by springgraph. ...and there is no reason why one would want to install signing-party for apt-rdepends. Bug#604035: dnsmasq: Documentation for case of static connection to the 'net and no resolvconf.
Subject: dnsmasq: Documentation for case of static connection to the 'net and no resolvconf. Package: dnsmasq Version: 2.55-2 Severity: minor Tags: upstream patch *** Please type your report below this line *** /usr/share/doc/dnsmasq-base/README.Debian mentions these cases. (4) In the absence of resolvconf, if you are using dhcpcd ... (5) In the absence of resolvconf, if you are using pppd ... Another important case is this. (5.5) In the absence of resolvconf, if you have a static connection to the Internet you may have nameserver addresses in /etc/network/interfaces. dnsmasq does not acquire these addresses. Namerserver addresses should be specified on the command line with the --server option or in /etc/dnsmasq.conf with the server option. A similar circumstance must prevail in systems other than Debian. Seems that the FAQs relating to nameservers can be incorporated into man dnsmasq. Regards, ... Bug#600755: [Pkg-shadow-devel] Bug#600755: Autologin fails with login from shadow 4.1.3.1
On Mon, 15 Nov 2010 23:29:01 +0100 Nicolas François nicolas.franc...@centraliens.net wrote: I did not reproduce this. Could you check if there are some information logged in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/auth.log. The problem has been solved on the Gentoo bug tracker: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324419 It was a configuration issue. Including the console device for the CONSOLE option in login.defs causes the login program to fail: CONSOLE console:tty1:tty2:tty3:tty4 But shouldn't this still be considered a bug? The previous versions of login did not have trouble when reading the same login.defs configuration file. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#34182: Shipping compiled ncurses examples
On 2010-11-19 09:59 +0100, Thomas Dickey wrote: On Fri, 19 Nov 2010, Sven Joachim wrote: We're already passing --disable-rpath to configure, and adding --disable-rpath-hack does not help either. :-( Here's my analysis why this is so: irrespective of these options, aclocal.m4 computes LD_RPATH_OPT=-Wl,-rpath, and later LOCAL_LDFLAGS=${LD_RPATH_OPT}\$(LOCAL_LIBDIR). This is not a problem for the regular programs since progs/Makefile.in does not use LOCAL_LDFLAGS, but test/Makefile.in adds it to LDFLAGS, so we lose. In test/configure there is no option at all to disable RPATH. Any ideas? I can add an option. test/configure was originally a minimal script, without the various features needed in ./configure, but I can see it'll grow a little more. Actually rpath is not a problem when running test/configure, but I could not get it to use the just compiled-but-not-yet-installed ncurses library. Because it is built out of tree, the libs are not adjacent to the headers which is expected by the --with-curses-dir configure option. It would be good if this could be made to work, because the simplistic solution of just copying everything from obj/test has the drawback that cruft files like Makefile creep into the binary package. And we can only run make install in the test directory if we had run test/configure before, see the recent discussion on bug-ncurses.
