Bug#702832: matlab-support: source in main even though it depends on non-free matlab
Control: tag -1 + wontfix Control: severity -1 wishlist Hi Michael, On Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 11:05:16PM -0400, Michael Gilbert wrote: That's a nice readme, but it isn't a license to circumvent debian policy. The right approach is to separate the matlab-support source package into matlab-support-free (providing your path-defining -dev package) and a matlab-support-contrib (providing the matlab wrappers) source packages. In principle you are, of course, right. However, in practical terms this would not change much. Right now, guaranteed freedoms in Debian main are not in danger. matlab-support-dev does not runtime-depend on anything outside main. Moreover, the matlab-support source package does not build-depend on anything outside main. Splitting the source package has the sole benefit of a cleaner separation, at the practical cost of another (virtually empty) source package, increasing the workload of all folks that need to touch it, size of the packages file, another tiny bit of mirror space... Two additional pointers that make me believe this view is shared by more DDs than just Yarik and me: 1. This setup has been outlined in the ITP already http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/01/msg00124.html Despite that fact that a few people commented, nobody objected this approach. 2. README file and package placement in main have been in effect from day 0. ftp-masters had no problem to accept this for inclusion. You are still correct, but without additional evidence that this move is unavoidable, I am not planing on doing the split. I've been looking for a replacement for kpdf, and my the top missing features of qpdfview are being able to select text to copy out of the document, and having a search limiting the thumbnails to the pages with that term on it. Could you also give a reference why you consider this standard? Maybe an HIG or something like that? Best regards, Adam. It was an enlightening easter egg hunt to go on, but I haven't found anything standard sounding using Exit. The closest I found where, Qt shortcut documentation using Exit, but not specifically in a file menu, and given how inconsistent the official Qt programs are in using Exit and Quit, that isn't used as much of a standard. http://harmattan-dev.nokia.com/docs/library/html/qt4/qshortcut.html GNOME Human Interface Guidelines, Standard Menus, which uses Quit https://developer.gnome.org/hig-book/3.4/menus-standard.html.en Ubuntu, Quit, but it wasn't specifically file menu, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CustomStatusMenuDesignGuidelines Doing a Google search on both Exit and Exit gives most Exit result with using instead of and, which isn't using it as a mnemonic. Bug#702854: RFP: nocache -- minimize filesystem caching effects
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: nocache Upstream Author : Julius Plenz jul...@plenz.com * URL : https://github.com/Feh/nocache * License : BSD Programming Lang: C Description : minimize filesystem caching effects The nocache tool tries to minimize the effect an application has on the Linux file system cache. This is done by intercepting the open and close system calls and calling posix_fadvise with the POSIX_FADV_DONTNEED parameter. Because the library remembers which pages (ie., 4K-blocks of the file) were already in file system cache when the file was opened, these will not be marked as don't need, because other applications might need that, although they are not actively used (think: hot standby). Use case: backup processes that should not interfere with the present state of the cache. -- Rogério Brito : rbrito@{ime.usp.br,gmail.com} : GPG key 4096R/BCFC http://rb.doesntexist.org/blog : Projects : https://github.com/rbrito/ DebianQA: http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=rbrito%40ime.usp.br -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#702734: [nvidia-detect] please move nvidia-detect out of non-free
On 2013-03-10 21:53, Filipus Klutiero wrote: nvidia-detect is currently part on non-free, like the rest of nvidia-graphics-drivers. nvidia-graphics-drivers in general is currently non-free, but nvidia-detect in particular has no non-free content. for building convenience, see below The script has no common license, but I'm offering my contribution under anything wanted. Historically the packaging is under GPL2(+), although that may not be the optimal choice for a package in non-free, especially wrt. patches. Something like BSD/MIT/EXPAT... may be more appropriate. But for your script, anything will be fine. If you send me a Copyright/License header today, I can still include it for 304.84 which I'll try to get into wheezy. nvidia-detect technically doesn't depend on anything non-free, however it is clearly strongly associated with the non-free rest of nvidia-graphics-drivers, therefore contrib would be a understandable section. The main data files for nvidia-detect are the PCI ID lists (that are automatically generated from upstream's README), so to conveniently update nvidia-detect to the latest definitions, I added this package to be built from n-g-d. (The lists for the older drivers are copies in n-g-d, but they usually don't change frequently, so need no updates). I don't think the PCI ID lists would make the package non-free. Putting it into contrib would be fine, it just needs an extra sync step for every new upstream release I wanted to avoid. I would argue main may be the best choice, given that the script could evolve into something a bit greater than a versions advisor. It could certainly recommend using nouveau to vesa users, for example. Someone needs to do this ... By the way, I recommend to consider making nvidia-detect a source package. This would ease updates after nvidia-graphics-drivers is frozen. It would be best not to leave nvidia-detect untouched in stable for the duration of a whole release cycle. Hmm, currently it outputs Uh oh. Your card is not supported by any driver version up to 304.64. A newer driver may add support for your card. for unsupported hardware, and that seems fine for a stable release. We will probably have a more accurate one in wheezy-backports. Anyway, patches welcome! Andreas -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org
Bug#702860: blender-ogrexml: instructions in README.Debian are incorrect
Package: blender-ogrexml Version: 1.7.4+dfsg1-7 Severity: important The instructions in README.Debian are incorrect. First, the name of the file containing the plugin is incorrect. Looks like this changed recently, so there should have been a NEWS.Debian entry about it. Secondly, blender itself uses version-specific paths to the scripts. In addition, based on strace it appears that installing the plugin in the right path under /usr/lib/blender/scripts will automatically enable it, it might be better to remove README.Debian and move the files. pabs@chianamo ~ $ grep ogre /usr/share/doc/blender-ogrexml/README.Debian 1/ ln -sf /usr/lib/blender/scripts/ogreexport.py $HOME/.blender/scripts/ pabs@chianamo ~ $ ls -l /usr/lib/blender/scripts/ogreexport.py ls: cannot access /usr/lib/blender/scripts/ogreexport.py: No such file or directory pabs@chianamo ~ $ dpkg -L blender-ogrexml | grep export.*py /usr/share/blender/scripts/ogremeshesexporter.py /usr/share/blender/scripts/ogrepkg/armatureexport.py /usr/share/blender/scripts/ogrepkg/meshexport.py /usr/share/blender/scripts/ogrepkg/materialexport.py pabs@chianamo ~ $ strace -f -F -e trace=file blender 21 | grep -i /home/.*blender.*scripts [pid 14288] stat(/home/pabs/.blender/2.63/scripts/, 0x7101e4c0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) [pid 14288] stat(/home/pabs/.blender/2.63/scripts/, 0x7101e4c0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) [pid 14288] stat(/home/pabs/.blender/2.63/scripts, 0x7101e1b0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) [pid 14288] stat(/home/pabs/.blender/2.63/scripts, 0x7101dc40) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) [pid 14288] stat(/home/pabs/.blender/2.63/scripts, 0x7101dc40) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) [pid 14288] stat(/home/pabs/.blender/2.63/scripts, 0x7101dc40) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (700, 'testing'), (600, 'unstable'), (550, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.8-trunk-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages blender-ogrexml depends on: ii blender 2.63a-1 -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Bug#702859: Conflicting declarations of variable scheme_thread_locals
Package: racket Version: 5.2.1+g6~92c8784+dfsg2-2+deb7u1 Usertags: goto-cc While building the package using our research compiler infrastructure the following type inconsistencies became apparent: when linking racket3m gcc -o racket3m gc2/main.o libracket3m.a ... the variable scheme_thread_locals takes different types within main.o and gmp.o (part of libracket3m.a), because gmp.o was compiled without MZ_PRECISE_GC being defined. Thus the keyex field is contained in struct Scheme_Inclhash_Object, but not in struct Scheme_Object. These differences may result in undefined behaviour. Bug#702782: broken glx alternative

Bug#702871: auctex: Raise/focus window on forward/reverse search with evince
Package: auctex Version: 11.87-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Dear Maintainer, This may be at least partially window-manager-specific, I use gnome shell. When performing forward search between a LaTeX buffer and evince, one would usually expect the evince window to pop up - which it does, but without focus. On my system this even leads to inconsistent alt-tab behaviour, so there could be a window manager bug here, but that's beside the point - evince should get focus on forward search, which it doesn't. Reverse search from evince to emacs does not even raise the emacs window. This is counter-intuitive (why would I perform a serach if not in order to see the result?) I attach a patch I use on my system, which is fairly Linux specific (using wmctrl). Not sure that it is the best solution, but pls take a look. If you apply this, maybe also Recommend wmctrl. Bug#702623: Maxima in sage is built against ecl
Le 10/03/2013 09:10, Julien Puydt a écrit : How easy is it to make the same maxima to run on several common-lisps? Now, that doesn't make everything perfect at once, since the /usr/bin/maxima shell script can't magically know which variant we want, but if there's a maxima-ecl available, that would definitely make things manageable for the sage packaging effort. We're not enforcing this because the permissions could be changed. Is there any better way to handle this than what we're doing now? I haven't tested, but it seems that this should work. I'm sure I'm missing something... Else if it already exists as a directory, and are upgrading from package version 1.2.1-2.2 or earlier, do a precautionary `chmod o-rx`? If ownership is still 'root:root', should chown to 'www-data:adm' so that log parsers retain access. Maybe a NEWS entry could advise about adding things into that group if they don't run as root or www-data but still need to be able to read the nginx logs? Some test cases I can think of are: * no log parsers in use - chmod o-rx is the important thing to do * logwatch - runs as root? changing the ownership/perms doesn't matter * awstats - the log parser part (update.sh) runs as user www-data * other CGI/PHP apps running as user www-data * other CGI/PHP apps running under separate uids - should be added to a group that has read access. If the admin already changed the user or group of /var/log/nginx, respect that, otherwise chgrp to adm and suggest they add their log parsers into that group if necessary. The alternative would be to just keep wide-open access... Wide-open HTTP logs could be a breach of privacy, reveals usernames for HTTP authentication, IP addresses of visitors, search queries or other HTML form input with a GET action, locations of potentially sensitive documents that would be otherwise impractical to guess, and provides a catalogue of installed web apps that would likely assist an attacker if this were some kind of shared host with other users. Bug#702878: linux-image-3.8-trunk-amd64: WLAN does not connect to range extender
Package: src:linux Version: 3.8.2-1~experimental.1 Severity: normal Dear Kernel team, I have a WLAN setup at home with an access point in the cellar and a range extender (Netgear WN2000RPT) in the living room. With my laptop I can connect to the access point in the cellar, but not to the range extender. I have attached diff in the output of 'dmesg' before and after a failed connection attempt to this bug report. I am not filing this bug against network-manager, isc-dhcp-client or any other userland tools, because I know the hardware works (I can connect when booting into Windows Vista which is still installed on a separate partition) and the software stack itself works, too (I can connect to the access point, not to the range extender). Thus, I believe it's a driver issue and the driver is provided by the kernel. For the record, this issue is present with both the 3.2 kernel in testing and the 3.8 one in experimental. If there is any more information you need to track down this bug, I'll be happy to provide it. Bug#702880: linux-image-3.8-trunk-amd64: Suspend locks when the laptop lid is closed
Package: src:linux Version: 3.8.2-1~experimental.1 Severity: normal Hi Debian Kernel team, when I am logged in into a Gnome session and close the lid of my laptop, the suspend process somehow hangs. It looks like it switched to VC1, because I can see some part of the boot log, but the computer is still on but unresponsive and the fan turns on high speed. However, when I suspend the system via the personal menu in the right corner of gnome-shell (hit Alt and click on Switch off), the system suspends and wakes up perfectly. I have to admit I am not perfectly sure where to file this bug, but since I am sure the kernel is involved, I am filing it here. ;) Cheers, - Fabian -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 3.8-trunk-amd64 (debian-ker...@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.7.2 (Debian 4.7.2-5) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.8.2-1~experimental.1 ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.8-trunk-amd64 root=UUID=fcfe4b79-8543-4b30-a687-7c018a18437c ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [30405.688221] [drm] ib test on ring 3 succeeded in 1 usecs [30405.852045] usb 1-6: reset high-speed USB device number 2 using ehci-pci [30405.956077] ata5: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300) [30405.956147] ata6: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300) [30406.128057] ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) [30406.156045] ata2.00: configured for UDMA/100 [30406.192058] firewire_core :09:01.0: rediscovered device fw0 [30406.244054] usb 7-1: reset low-speed USB device number 2 using uhci_hcd [30407.160190] psmouse serio1: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1 [30407.976042] ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) [30407.992823] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133 [30407.992981] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Starting disk [30407.999800] PM: resume of devices complete after 2363.356 msecs [30408.000171] PM: Finishing wakeup. precautionary - That would mean we assume that making the change won't break anything. We're setting this for new installs but forcing it on already deployed systems wouldn't be a good idea. We could add a NEWS entry to recommend making this change. It's definitely not a good idea to force it to happen. On Tue, Mar 12, 2013 at 7:53 AM, Steven Chamberlain ste...@pyro.eu.orgwrote: Hi, On 12/03/13 03:33, Michael Lustfield wrote: In debian/nginx-common.postinst we have: configure) logdir=/var/log/nginx # Ensure existance and right state of log files and directory if [ ! -d $logdir -a ! -L $logdir ]; then mkdir $logdir chown www-data:adm $logdir chmod 0750 $logdir fi This should create the log directory if it doesn't already exist. Bug#702782: broken glx alternative
Hi Andreas Andreas Beckmann a...@debian.org writes: On 2013-03-11 12:07, Gaudenz Steinlin wrote: The only solution I currently is to drop the nvidia alternative and to show all the nvidia driver version as individual options in the glx alternative. This avoids the double alternative redirection which leads to this problem. IIRC that was needed to avoid putting internal knowledge about the nvidia packages layout into to many places ... but for other reasons as You could still manage the alternatives from the nvidia package, but instead of doing it with the nvidia alternative just directly add it as another option to the glx alternative. well maybe we should introduce an update-glx command for wheezy+1. That might at least work around the problem. The glx alternatives in experimental manage the module blacklist, too, and therefore need an update-initramfs -u after reconfiguring the alternative. I noticed that it also updates the initramfs. But at least for live systems I think you want to completely blacklist all of nouveau and nvidia in the initramfs to be able to choose the right module later during boot. The alternative to this is to do it in the initramfs itself. But also then the blacklist handling for the initramfs is not needed. I actually prefer the approach I proposed in #685617 because it does not depend on the alternative for the kernel module. If I understand that correctly the video kernel module in the initramfs is only needed to display a graphical boot screen (eg. plymouth). Or is there anything else to it? please try dpkg-reconfigure glx-alternative-nvidia after manually changing the nvidia alternative Yes that works. But with the package from experimental it also updates the initramfs. Which takes some time if done during boot and is quite useless unless your next boot is on the same hardware. To just fix the alternative update-alternatives --set glx /usr/lib/nvidia is enough. But it's IMHO still a bug that you have to fiddle with the glx alternative just to fix the nvidia one. Bug#702885: linux-image-3.8-trunk-amd64: Samsung NP900X3C display does not resume from suspend
Package: src:linux Version: 3.8.2-1~experimental.1 Severity: important Since upgrading to kernel 3.8.2-1~experimental.1 my Samsung NP900X3C freezes when I try to resume from sleep/suspend. I noticed that the caps lock key was usually still working (however, on one occasion it wasn't, so I presume the machine had totally locked), so I tried ssh'ing in and discovered I could recover it by restarting gdm3. I realise the ability to restart X makes it look more like a userland bug, and that these Samsung Ultrabook/laptops are notorious for broken ACPI behaviour, but this problem seems to be specific to kernel 3.8. On downgrading to 3.2.39-2 or 3.7.8-1~experimental.1 the problem goes away. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 3.8-trunk-amd64 (debian-ker...@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.7.2 (Debian 4.7.2-5) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.8.2-1~experimental.1 ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.8-trunk-amd64 root=UUID=051093c4-6567-4984-a8ea-3ffbd736402f ro elevator=noop quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [ 139.684324] r8169 :02:00.0: System wakeup disabled by ACPI [ 139.685734] snd_hda_intel :00:1b.0: irq 50 for MSI/MSI-X [ 139.907624] usb 1-1.5: reset full-speed USB device number 3 using ehci-pci [ 140.002530] btusb 1-1.5:1.0: no reset_resume for driver btusb? In any case, I am using indeed using xterm if you would still be willing to investigate for me. I have now reverted to 4.00.03jw4 due to frequent segfaults that also appear to be related to altscreen. The issues are reminiscent of what's described in bug [#666052](http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=666052), but I experienced no segfaults until I upgraded to Wheezy and, in the process, upgraded GNU screen. Bug#702830: fldigi: Does not even launch under MINT
Hi Sam- You've filed a bug against fldigi in Debian, but the subject line Does not even launch under MINT suggests that perhaps you're running a Linux Mint distribution, not Debian. Is that correct? If indeed you are running Mint, then you'll need to file a bug with the Mint bug tracker[0], not this Debian bug tracker (even if it is the Mint Debian Edition). If I misunderstand and you actually are running Debian not Mint, then please confirm that and also describe the failure in more detail; specifically, paste the text output that occurs when you try to run fldigi from a terminal window command-line prompt. 73 de KA6MAL -Kamal [0] https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/ On Mon, 2013-03-11 at 20:09 -0400, Sam wrote: Package: fldigi Version: 3.21.48-1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, *** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? * What was the outcome of this action? * What outcome did you expect instead? *** End of the template - remove these lines *** -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.0 APT prefers testing-updates APT policy: (500, 'testing-updates'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-powerpc Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages fldigi depends on: ii libasound2 1.0.25-4 ii libc6 2.13-38 ii libfltk-images1.3 1.3.0-8 ii libfltk1.3 1.3.0-8 ii libgcc11:4.7.2-5 ii libhamlib2 1.2.15.1-1 ii libpng12-0 1.2.49-1 ii libportaudio2 19+svn2021-1 ii libpulse0 2.0-6 ii librpc-xml-perl0.76-3 ii libsamplerate0 0.1.8-5 ii libsndfile11.0.25-5 ii libstdc++6 4.7.2-5 ii libx11-6 2:1.5.0-1 ii libxmlrpc-c++4 1.16.33-3.2 ii libxmlrpc-core-c3 1.16.33-3.2 Versions of packages fldigi recommends: ii extra-xdg-menus 1.0-4 Versions of packages fldigi suggests: pn libterm-readline-gnu-perl | libterm-readline-perl-perl none -- no debconf information signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#701112: (no subject)
On 12/03/13 13:57, Michael Lustfield wrote: precautionary - That would mean we assume that making the change won't break anything. We're setting this for new installs but forcing it on already deployed systems wouldn't be a good idea. We could add a NEWS entry to recommend making this change. It's definitely not a good idea to force it to happen. I think there is a duty to fix it on upgrade, otherwise having fixed version installed will not be an indication that the system is patched for CVE-2013-0337. Of course if owner/group/permissions were changed in any way since the older nginx package version was installed, I would leave them alone. Otherwise, if removing world read/execute permissions, changing the owner/group to www-data:adm eliminates most risk of anything breaking. The only problem I foresee is the last (unlikely, and inherently secure) example I gave in [#44], where world readable logs are assumed. That could be so easily fixed by adding appropriate users into the adm group, or overriding owner/group/permissions of /var/log/nginx afterward. Bug#702872: Segfaults immediately on attempting a radius connection
Hi, On a 64 bit wheezy system, the radius module immediately segfaults when attempting Radius authentication. I found the issue. In radius-1.2.5/radius.c PHP_FUNCTION(radius_create_request), 'code' is declared an int, but zend_parse_parameters is passed rl, asking to parse the parameter into a long: if (zend_parse_parameters(ZEND_NUM_ARGS() TSRMLS_CC, rl, z_radh, code) == FAILURE) { This fails on 64 bit platforms. This case is actually documented in http://svn.php.net/viewvc/php/php- src/trunk/README.PARAMETER_PARSING_API?view=markup which explicitly warns against this causing segfaults around line 75. The attached simple patch hence resolves the issue and I can confirm that both my application and my minimal testcase do not crash anymore. I'm planning to just upload the attached NMU to resolve the problem as soon as possible as the module is currently unusable, there are two unacked NMU's against the package already and we're close to release.
