If jessie is going to release with Perl 5.18, adding them as recommendations to the perl package should be enough. If we release with something later we probably need real dependencies for one release cycle. According to the above, we could possibly drop B-Lint and File-CheckTree if we assume that user code doesn't need them. Not sure how probable that is. Bug#707591: cryptsetup: speed up initramfs by reading the passphrase early
On Fri, May 10, 2013 at 12:32:14AM +0100, Alasdair G Kergon wrote: The rest of the tools try to be careful to track any memory into which the passphrase or key is written and to wipe that memory before freeing it. What kind of scenario are you trying to cover here? When an adversary can read the main memory of the system she can read the keys directly. The current cryptsetup scripts move the pass phrase via a pipe. How do you wipe the memory in the kernel used to pass the phrase? Your proposal could document cases where this isn't done so users are aware. Documentation definitely does not hurt here. Note that the remote unlock procedure implemented in the dropbear package suffers from the very same issue. Note that I do not believe that this early pass phrase reading tool should be enabled by default. It only works reliably in the case where there is only one encrypted device and all it does is save the user possibly a few seconds. It really is an optimization not needed by everyone. I would only enable it on machines where it makes a difference to me. Helmut -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#707672: general: binary diffs of large packages
Package: general Severity: wishlist Dear Debian, At the end of a slow line it would still be nice to be able to download only the actual binary differences between versions of a package during an upgrade. Especially for larger packages. I'm sure it is possible to do technically, but it may require a very different approach to packaging. For the longer view, yes, the internet is getting faster, but it isn't always fast for everyone and it is nice to think of it as a limited resource. If Debian can make this change then that is many many bytes no longer needing to be shipped, saving energy and connection times for everyone, disk space, etc. Thanks for consideration, -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-686-pae (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Do you remember when the package has been installed initially? Could you show the user information for this account, i.e. run: getent passwd apt-cacher-ng Or just check the UID, if the UID is outside of the reserved range (100-999) then something went wrong before. You could try to change the UIDs or simply delete this account (man deluser) and then recreate it as system-user with the command mentioned before. And afterwards, you would need to adapt the permissions of the files to the new UID which the new account got assigned afterwards (i.e. like: chown -R NEWUID /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng /etc/apt-cacher-ng /var/log/apt-cacher-ng ). Bug#707678: gnome-system-tools: users-admin fails silently to delete a user if a process is running with that uid
Package: gnome-system-tools Version: 3.0.0-2 Severity: important When trying to delete a user, users-admin appeared to have worked: the user was removed from the list shown by users-admin, and no error message was displayed. However, a quick command-line check showed the user was still there. Indeed, after exiting and relaunching users-admin, the user was again shown in the list. This was repeatable. Using the deluser command in a terminal provided the answer: deluser failed because that user was currently used by a running process. After killing that process, deleting the user in users-admin worked as expected. The security risk is that users-admin failed to delete the user (when the process was running) without ANY indication that anything was wrong, and so a trusting admin -if there is such a person :-) - could be fooled into thinking a user had been deleted when it had not. -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-686-pae (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages gnome-system-tools depends on: ii dconf-gsettings-backend [gsettings-backend] 0.12.1-3 ii libatk1.0-0 2.4.0-2 ii libc62.13-38 ii libcairo-gobject21.12.2-3 ii libcairo21.12.2-3 ii libdbus-1-3 1.6.8-1 ii libfontconfig1 2.9.0-7.1 ii libfreetype6 2.4.9-1.1 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.26.1-1 ii libglib2.0-0 2.33.12+really2.32.4-5 ii libgtk-3-0 3.4.2-6 ii liboobs-1-5 3.0.0-1 ii libpango1.0-01.30.0-1 ii libpolkit-gobject-1-00.105-3 ii perl 5.14.2-21 ii policykit-1-gnome0.105-2 ii system-tools-backends2.10.2-1 Versions of packages gnome-system-tools recommends: pn gnome-control-center none Versions of packages gnome-system-tools suggests: ii ntp 1:4.2.6.p5+dfsg-2 -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: nginx Version: 1.4.1-1 Severity: important A fresh installation of nginx 1.4.1-1 on Debian sid fails to start, despite numerous /etc/init.d/nginx start attempts, with no error message on the console. This is a bug, but it shouldn't affect the X server, or anything else except colour correction for scanning. Please report your X server crash separately, as a bug in the X server (if it turns out to be another component's fault, it can be reassigned). The X maintainers can hopefully help you debug that. Bug#628843: Bug#659878: cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device
As information at present I have a bit more time left in testing and reworking the patch I sent with #141 which has some smaller issues with signalling mostly SIGSTOP and SIGCONT and I hope that I can submit the rework during this weekend. @Serge I'm sorry but I couldn't reproduce the behaviour as You submitted with #146 and therefore I would like to ask You if You could provide me with the checksums as in the .dsc file, if You run on 32Bit or 64Bit and if You have USE_PAM enabled or not. Maybe I might be able to improve the patch or to fix that issue. Actually, the other thing you lose (I presuming caused by acting on bug #628843) is tty resizing by SIGWINCH. ttys are really useful, it turns out. No, this clearly comes from the tcsetpgrp() call inside bash returning -1 with errno set to ENOTTY because of the missing controlling tty. As per some comments in #628843, the way this bug was addressed breaks su -c to increase privledges. It also breaks su -c to become a user and execute something interactive. Root isn't going to be doing stupid things and running scripts that have been compromised (if they are, then they've got bigger problems), so what's the problem? (why on earth would root ever su to an untrusted user account?) I think this change should just be backed out, and a prominent warning about the tty exploit placed in the manpage. But this would be fixed with the patch in #141 without having any restrictions. However, I don't agree with the statement that 'root' would never su to an untrusted user account beside that, that from administrator point of view every user account is 'untrusted' and in fact it is quite often that this happens that 'root' is su'ing to non privileged users beside using a lot of starting and maintenance scripts which are invoking su. IMHO it is better to fix what is fixable to improve quality and safety instead of making workarounds and warnings. Bug#707695: grub2-common: grub-reboot documentation is incomplete
Package: grub2-common Version: 1.99-27+deb7u1 Severity: normal The grub-reboot documentation doesn't say a word about the fact that GRUB_DEFAULT=saved needs to be set in /etc/default/grub (and update-grub executed afterwards AFAICT) so grub-reboot actually does what it is supposed to do. Is there any specific reason why grub-reboot doesn't modify the GRUB_DEFAULT setting during its execution? IMHO it should also be documented that grub-reboot starts counting at 0, while this might be obvious to many people it's not necessarily true for anyone using grub-reboot, especially since there's no real interface to get a list of boot entries (other than `grep '^menuentry' /boot/grub/grub.cfg` which isn't what I call an interface) and booting into the wrong entry might by fatal in certain situations. regards, -mika- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I'm still quite uncomfortable on replacing MIT kerberos, the reference implementation of Kerberos and the default one on Debian, with another, less used and tested, alternative. Would it be possible to use MIT krb for the dynamic libcurl, and *no* krb for the static libcurl? The krb part is, after all, only used for SPNEGO, and the set intersection of people who want static libcurl and people who need krb is probably pretty small. Is there any progress with this bug? Nope. Note that in any case, I do not intend to provide static libcurl builds without the krb5 support (having shared and static builds of the same library with different features in the same package is just silly). I'd like to reach a consensus that enables me to provide the statically linked aide pkg with curl support? I've just looked into the krb5 sources, and I noticed that it does in fact support static builds. This can be enabled by passing --enable-static to the configure script (I just tried it, and it seems to work, altough I didn't actually try to use the generated libraries). The problem with this is that you can't build both static and shared in the same build cycle (at least, not with the krb5 version in Debian, maybe the new upstream release supports this?). The best possible solution as far as I'm concerned, would be that someone starts providing such krb5 static builds, either as a different source package (in which case krb5 would have to provide a -source package, like e.g. gcc, and the new package makes use of it and the Built-Using thingy), or as part of the krb5 source package itself. Now, do the krb5 maintainers think that this is actually possible? If so, are they interested in providing such static builds? Also CCed #439039 for reference. Bug#439039: Bug#495163: useless static library due to libkrb5
There are reasons that the krb5 upstream build does not include static libs. The main problem is that more and more krb5 depends on plugins for various things. As an example, preauthentication, KDC location,' GSS-API mechanisms all support plugins. In the krb5 in wheezy, you cannot request FAST credentials in some realms without plugin support. I think it's a different set of things that fail in krb5 1.11, but generally you cannot assume that a static build of krb5 will provide acceptable functionality for general use. The reason the upstream build system supports static is because for certain test coverage analysis gcc works a lot better with static objects. So, I'm open to including static support in a special package (not libkrb5-dev), but I'd need to understand the use case and be convinced it's actually a good idea. Like the curl maintainer I'm very uncomfortable producing builds that have a different set of functionality between static and dynamic. However it's more or less inherently true that will be the case for krb5. --Sam -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? While debugging the issue, I read somewhere that GTK styles using C++ sometimes cause mysterious issues caused e.g. by mismatching libstdc++ versions within the same application. [...] I doubt that this will be backported to wheezy as it doesn't seem very important. I can't see any reason not to enable it for 3.9 onward, though. I agree that this is not very important, and has very few users. Regards -- Mathieu Parent -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#707699: [Pkg-kde-extras] Bug#707699: gtk2-engines-oxygen: emacs hangs on startup
Hi again, after choosing the oxygen style for GTK2 applications, emacs no longer starts. The process hangs before opening the window. While debugging the issue, I read somewhere that GTK styles using C++ sometimes cause mysterious issues caused e.g. by mismatching libstdc++ versions within the same application. QtCurve shows the same symptoms, so this may well be that the cause of the problem. Furthermore, this started happening about the same time as I updated libc to 2.17 from unstable (I have a testing system otherwise). I recompiled the package on my system, but that did not change anything. Some followup information: I ran emacs in gdb and caught a backtrace of the deadlock. Here it is: #0 0x7230519d in poll () at ../sysdeps/unix/syscall-template.S:81 #1 0x759efdac in ?? () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0 #2 0x759f028a in g_main_loop_run () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0 #3 0x75a31ae1 in g_spawn_sync () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0 #4 0x75a31f58 in g_spawn_command_line_sync () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0 #5 0x7fffed548ce4 in Oxygen::QtSettings::kdeConfigPathList() const () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/liboxygen-gtk.so #6 0x7fffed54f1ad in Oxygen::QtSettings::initialize(unsigned int) () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/liboxygen-gtk.so #7 0x7fffed560d56 in Oxygen::Style::initialize(unsigned int) () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/liboxygen-gtk.so #8 0x7fffed562215 in Oxygen::Style::instance() () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/liboxygen-gtk.so #9 0x7fffed5a6d36 in theme_init () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/liboxygen-gtk.so #10 0x7799cd76 in ?? () from /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 It goes on a bit, but the offending line on the style is obviously if( g_spawn_command_line_sync( kde4-config --path config, path, 0L, 0L, 0L ) path ) in oxygengtksettings.cpp. I also checked my dpkg logs, and indeed I updated libglib yesterday morning, and it was yesterday afternoon that I first noticed this problem. So it's probably some behavioural change in libglib which broke this. Should the bug be re-assigned? Bug#707701: gcalcli: Update to upstream version at github
ah -- they started with a clean import again (there was already git repo at https://code.google.com/p/gcalcli) thanks for the buzz -- might take me a bit though to have a look at it cheers!
