Bug#405965: Mark it SOLVED, this is not a bug.
Hi, finally i've taken some time to reproduce this bug in a Sid too. (lo interface down and an active Internet connection) So my conclusions are that this is not a bug, cause if KDE requires the lo interface up, and upping lo the system works well, the problem doesn't exist. Bug#505971: RFP: eispice -- eispice - a clone of the Berkeley SPICE 3 Simulation Engine
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Package name: eispice Version : 0.11.6 Upstream Author : Charles Eidsness [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL : http://www.thedigitalmachine.net/eispice.html License : GPL Programming Lang: C, Python, Fortran Description : eispice - a clone of the Berkeley SPICE 3 Simulation Engine eispice is a clone of the Berkley SPICE 3 Simulation Engine. It was originally targeted toward PCB level Signal Integrity Simulation; simulating IBIS model defined devices, transmission lines, and passive termination but the scope of the tool has been slowly expanding to include more general purpose circuit simulation features. The Simulator The simulation engine is written in C and utilizes the SuperLU matrix library for solving the MNA Matrices. It should run faster than Berkley Spice for most IBIS based SI simulations (it's difficult to directly compare them because spice doesn't directly support IBIS models). Models eispice contains a subset of standard spice3 device models. The intent is to one day be completely compliant with models available in the basic spice3f5 release. eispice also includes a set of unique models like direct IBIS model support, Python based Behavioral models, non-linear capacitors, etc. Refer to the User's Manual for more details about what's available in the current release. Python Other than being the only Open Source simulator that provides native IBIS model support, the most unique feature of eispice is its Python based front-end. The eispice simulator is wrapped into a Python Module (the simulator itself is written in C) which makes it possible to use the Python language to control simulations and process results. For those familiar with Berkley Spice and not Python; a Python shell can be used in place of the nutmeg and Python scripts can be run like batch-mode SPICE. One of the powers of Python is the ability to integrate different Python Modules. A great example of this is Thomas' MyHDL/eispice Mixed-Mode Example. The Plotter eispice includes a very simple plot utility or you can use the Python Plotting tool of your choice, e.g. matplotlib. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#500955: apticron: Check for IPv6 address results in Address family not supported by protocol mail sent
Package: apticron Version: 1.1.21 Severity: minor The use of '/sbin/ip -f inet6 addr show scope global' in line 86 yielded the same error as in bug #463585 in version 1.1.20. So I upgraded to 1.1.21, but it is still not fixed. As bug #463585 is archived, i send this new bug report. I suggest adding a ' 2 /dev/null' as for the IPv4 case above. The bug still exists in version 1.1.25 (the code moved to line 90). It is rather annoying to get a mail with the error message 'RTNETLINK answers: Address family not supported by protocol Dump terminated' every day, yet apticron works apart from that. Please fix this. I use a virtual private server without IPv6, if that is of any importance. Bug#500769: inkscape: textext extension should be integrated with Inkscape
Package: inkscape Version: 0.46-2.1 Severity: wishlist Putting of LaTeX formulas in the figure is really essential. The currently available feature Effects-Render-LaTeX formula currently doesn't work for me, and additionally lacks the fundamental feature - possibility to edit the formula, after it is rendered. I have found the textext extension: http://www.elisanet.fi/ptvirtan/software/textext/ which works perfectly for me. Unfortunately it must be installed either on a per user basis - in ~/.inkscape/extensions or in the /usr/share/inkscape/extensions - causing mess with the packaged files. Is it possible to integrate textext with the Inkscape? Or maybe it should be placed in another package? -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26.3 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=pl_PL.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=pl_PL.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages inkscape depends on: ii libatk1.0-0 1.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.7-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-6 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libcairomm-1.0-11.6.0-1 C++ wrappers for Cairo (shared lib ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.3.7-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgc1c21:6.8-1.1conservative garbage collector for ii libgcc1 1:4.3.1-9GCC support library ii libgconf2-4 2.22.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglib2.0-02.16.5-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libglibmm-2.4-1c2a 2.16.4-1 C++ wrapper for the GLib toolkit ( ii libgnomevfs2-0 1:2.22.0-5 GNOME Virtual File System (runtime ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.11-3The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libgtkmm-2.4-1c2a 1:2.12.7-1 C++ wrappers for GTK+ 2.4 (shared ii libgtkspell02.0.13-1 a spell-checking addon for GTK's T ii liblcms11.17.dfsg-1 Color management library ii libmagick++10 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2+b2 C++ API to the ImageMagick library ii libmagick10 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2+b2 image manipulation library ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-2 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-1 PNG library - runtime ii libpoppler-glib30.8.7-1 PDF rendering library (GLib-based ii libpoppler3 0.8.7-1 PDF rendering library ii libpopt01.14-4 lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libsigc++-2.0-0c2a 2.0.18-2 type-safe Signal Framework for C++ ii libssl0.9.8 0.9.8g-13SSL shared libraries ii libstdc++6 4.3.1-9 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libwpd8c2a 0.8.14-1 Library for handling WordPerfect d ii libwpg-0.1-10.1.2-1 WordPerfect graphics import/conver ii libx11-62:1.1.5-1X11 client-side library ii libxft2 2.1.12-3 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxml2 2.6.32.dfsg-4GNOME XML library ii libxslt1.1 1.1.24-2 XSLT processing library - runtime ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12compression library - runtime Versions of packages inkscape recommends: ii imagemagick 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2+b2 image manipulation programs ii libwmf-bin 0.2.8.4-6Windows metafile conversion tools ii perlmagick 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2+b2 Perl interface to the libMagick gr ii pstoedit3.45-4 PostScript and PDF files to editab Versions of packages inkscape suggests: ii dia-gnome 0.96.1-7 Diagram editor (GNOME version) ii libxml-xql-perl 0.68-4 Perl module for querying XML tree ii python2.5.2-2An interactive high-level object-o ii python-lxml 2.1.1-2.1 pythonic binding for the libxml2 a ii python-numpy 1:1.1.0-3 Numerical Python adds a fast array ii ruby 4.2An interpreter of object-oriented ii skencil 0.6.17-16 Interactive vector drawing program -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#500777: RFP: inkscape-textext -- textext is an Inkscape extension allowing to put editable LaTeX text or formula into the Inkscape figure
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: inkscape-textext Version : 0.4.3 Upstream Author : Pauli Virtanen [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://www.elisanet.fi/ptvirtan/software/textext/ * License : BSD (declared in the textext.py file), also own LICENSE.txt file, which seems to be BSD compatible Programming Lang: Python Description : textext is an Inkscape extension allowing to put editable LaTeX text or formula into the Inkscape figure * Long description from the textext.py file: Textext is an extension for Inkscape_ that allows adding LaTeX-generated text objects to your SVG drawing. What's more, you can also *edit* these text objects after creating them. This brings some of the power of TeX typesetting to Inkscape. Textext was initially based on InkLaTeX_ written by Toru Araki, but is now rewritten. Thanks to Robert Szalai, Rafal Kolanski, Brian Clarke, and Florent Becker for contributions. .. note:: Unfortunately, the TeX input dialog is modal. That is, you cannot do anything else with Inkscape while you are composing the LaTeX text snippet. This is because I have not yet worked out whether it is possible to write asynchronous extensions for Inkscape. .. note:: Textext requires Pdflatex and one of the following - Pdf2svg_ - Pstoedit_ compiled with the ``plot-svg`` back-end - Pstoedit_ and Skconvert_ .. _Pstoedit: http://www.pstoedit.net/pstoedit .. _Skconvert: http://www.skencil.org/ .. _Pdf2svg: http://www.cityinthesky.co.uk/pdf2svg.html .. _Inkscape: http://www.inkscape.org/ .. _InkLaTeX: http://www.kono.cis.iwate-u.ac.jp/~arakit/inkscape/inklatex.html * Packaging suggestions: Textext consists (currently) from three files: textext.inx, textext.py and LICENSE.txt. Textext may be installed without packaging, by the user him/herself, just by putting the textext.inx and textext.py into the ~/.inkscape/extensions directory. Packaging should be relatively easy, the files: textext.inx and texttext.py should be installed into the /usra/share/inkscape/extensions directory, and LICENSE.txt should be (probably?) installed into /usr/share/doc/textext directory. Bug#497293: dpatch: deprecate in favor of quilt
Package: dpatch Severity: wishlist It seems like quilt is a much better alternative to dpatch: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg256211.html http://blog.orebokech.com/2007/08/converting-debian-packages-from-dpatch.html At quilt wish: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=464663 it made the script: /usr/share/doc/quilt/examples/dpatch2quilt.sh for easy migration into quilt. Should we start deprecating dpatch and specifying that in: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/ch-build.en.html so new packages use quilt instead of dpatch and we start the transition of the remaining packages to quilt? Bug#497293: [dpatch-maintainers] Bug#497293: dpatch: deprecate in favor of quilt

Absolutely not: dpatch is way much superior in situation where the debian/ dir is versioned in a VCS and merged with upstream code at package build-time (I think of svn + prop:mergeWithUstream). Could you explain this? I would like to know the exact steps that you carry and why quilt can not cope with them. I would like to know if there is any problem that quilt can not handle that dpatch can. Moreover, looking at numbers[1][2], dpatch is roughly 2.5 more used that quilt. With that thinking you should consider using MSWindows as it is much more used than Debian GNU/Linux. I'm not saying quilt is not worth to be used, but dpatch is very used, has a strong users-base and has capabilities not actually available in quilt, so no, please let's keep both and let the developer choose what they prefer. I think dpatch is an inferior tool to solve the same problem. Ahora también puedes acceder a tu correo Terra desde el móvil. Bug#495767: phpmyadmin export produce corrupted archives
Thijs Kinkhorst a écrit : Probably one of your files from the package, e.g. /etc/phpmyadmin/*.php, has some whitespace after a closing ? or before an opening ?. Can you check if this is the case? If you run `debsums phpmyadmin` (after installing the debsums package) you can verify whether any of the files as phpmyadmin ships them under /usr are inadvertently changed. I ran debsums phpmyadmin | grep -v OK but but there wasn't any result, so I looked into the files inside /etc/phpmyadmin and found that every php files were terminated by one LF ( hex 0A ) except my /etc/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php which ended with two LF. I removed the two LFs and tried to export my database and everything worked normally. Then I tried to put back one of the two LF chars and everything worked right either. I don't understand why the presence of two LF chars can cause this problem but the most important is that the export works ;) Thanks a lot The function works well for me so I suspect the whitespace problem. cheers, Thijs -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#489726: should numpy be built with atlas?
On Mon, Jul 7, 2008 at 2:12 PM, Matthias Klose [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Package: python-numpy Version: 1:1.1.0-2 Severity: serious python-numpy now has an unconditional dependency on libatlas3gf-base, needing the specialized atlas libraries as a runtime dependency. Users still should have the option to use the standard blas and lapack libs instead of the untested/unmaintained atlas libraries in debian. The problem is that the new (1.0) numpy building system needs ATLAS at compile time to enable fast matrix-multiplication. If ATLAS is not found at compile time, numpy.core._dotblas.so is not built and slow matrix multiplication is used even if the end user has ATLAS installed. In the old numpy _dotblas.so was always compiled using refblas and the end user would still have had the option of using ATLAS. I'm not sure I understand why ATLAS is now needed at compile time, but look here: http://scipy.org/scipy/numpy/ticket/667 and here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=464784 I think python-numpy should stay as it is now and a bug-wishlist should be reported to the atlas package to encourage packaging of the new stable version (3.8.2). Filing a ticket on numpy trac may help, but the fate of ticket 667 seems to indicate that there's no will of fixing this bug upstream... thank you, tiziano -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#482100: linux-image-2.6.25-3-686-bigmem : Complete system freeze
maximilian attems wrote : that's quite sad but as aboves gives no hint on where we would perform that badly nor why those freezes that i cant reproduce happen. i'd have to close the bug. the only big difference i know about our kernels is that ubuntu uses a pata driver instead of the old ide ones. could that make the difference? best regards Don't get me wrong, I don't blame anyone for this problem, especially Debian which I love, but I can't really investigate anymore than I did this issue. As soon as I will get some time I will reinstall a stock Lenny Deb (as Etch won't install on those boxes) and try out a 2.6.26.* vanilla on it. I'd rather run Debian than Ubuntu but right now I have too many problems (can't upgrade kernel which is bad since it's handling my hardware better, hum, when it's not freezing I mean ;-) , had trouble with virtualbox package (both ose and sun) ending in segfault anytime I want to run a virtual machine, and finally Xorg that got crazy with my mouse : it's not responding in Opengl programs, and worst inside my virtual machines (kvm or virtualbox) ). So for now it'll be Ubuntu which is close enough in line from Debian so that I can feel at home and export most of my conf files. Sorry I can't help better, if you want any particular output I still have an image from the Debian system on a spare drive, I can boot in and perform some tests. But I'm no developer or kernel hacker, just a rookie sysadmin. I have two identical boxes, on being live and the other a testbed for the first and backup for the first. It's running on Asus P5K-E motherboards, Intel Core2Duo 6750, 4GB of ram and sataII everything (hard drives and optical drives). I understand there have been huge changes between 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 kernels, but still can't figure what's creating the problem, I tried a make oldconfig from my 2.6.24 config, thus disabling most of the new features in 2.6.25, and still I got the same problem... I'm pretty much convince that it has something to do with the way the kernel handles the cpu, especially interrupts, but I don't have the skills to gather evidences. Regards, Tom Hi, just for information, following your email yesterday I booted back the Lenny system which is having trouble with 2.6.25* kernels. I have compiled a vanilla 2.6.26-rc8 from kernel.org, using my actual config as a starter, and it's been running fine since then. I loaded all the modules I usually use (including the beta nvidia blob 177.13), two kvm machines running and it's stable. I guess there really is something special with the 2.6.25 family... Whatever it is I hope it won't show up again in the future kernels. I cloned the same system again on a different machine (still C2duo on Asus motherboard), tried a 2.6.25-7 kernel from Debian which froze the computer after 2 hours. Then I tried the vanilla 2.6.26-rc8 and it's still running fine. I am not the only one experiencing this problem, but I guess I am the only one who reported it... Bug#482100: linux-image-2.6.25-3-686-bigmem : Complete system freeze
maximilian attems wrote : okay thanks for retesting. please checkout 2.6.26-rc8 from debian linux images, see apt trunk lines http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernel if those are also freezing please send in the working config for 2.6.26-rc8. kind regards It's a bit too early to tell, but seems like 2.6.26-rc8-amd64 from Debian is working as fine as is the vanilla kernel. It's currently running on two clones of the problematic system and no freeze so far. One is stock kernel just installed from trunk repository, running in console mode without x started. The other one has been rebuilt (but with strictly the stock 2.6.26-rc8-amd64 configuration file) from trunk linux-source-2.6.26-rc8 with gcc 4.3 (Lenny default), and is running with x and nvidia's latest beta driver, doing equally good. Looks like the problem is strictly a 2.6.25 issue. I would really like to understand what's going wrong in the equation Debian Lenny - my hardware - 2.6.25 kernel ... I tried once again the 2.6.25 , using the working 2.6.26 config to build it, but only to freeze the system after a mere 30 minutes. The cpu seems to be idling even though there is activity on the box, and never coming up again. Nothing works, keyboard (ps2) and magic keys are useless, just a message telling cpu stuck for xx seconds for a while, then even this freezes and I have to hard-reboot. Exact same system and hardware, I really can't settle for a configuration problem or some weird cpufreq governor ill behavior since it's working perfectly with 2.6.24 and 2.6.26... and even the vanilla 2.6.25 is crashing the same way. Anyway, I can live with not knowing as long as my system works again and I am able to upgrade the kernel when needed. If you need anything else, or if there's a way I can rebuild a 2.6.25 with debug on to help gathering information I can do it, but I doubt it would be of any interest since we've already moved on to 2.6.26 . Of course if 2.6.25 is to be the next Stable default kernel you may come across weird problems like mine again... As this file isn't present in every users home, I think it might be created the first time one user run mcedit. the line 120 of my file ~/.mc/cedit/Syntax is : include debian-sources-list.syntax it's why, as the file /usr/share/mc/syntax/debian-sources-list.syntax isn't in the last release, this causes an error. I have found a workaround : I copied the missing syntax files from another box running debian etch. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#457044:
Jonas Smedegaard a écrit : If you dislike the confusion of the many choices (and us package maintainers disagreeing of what's best), then use the same as gets installed by default using a recent debian-installer. On IBM-compatible x86 systems that means the bootloader grub, the ramdisk-generator initramfs-tools, a kernel compiled and packaged by the Debian kernel team, and devices handled by udev. My problem is that my box is running since March 2002 and the defaults weren't the same at this prehistorical time. It has been apt-get'ed daily and rebooted many times following the successive kernels (2.2, 2.4, 2.6) an releases (Potato, Woody, Sarge, Etch and now Lenny) , by the way this means that the debian upgrade system is working very well to get through all those evolutions ;) As there was no hardware changes since the start, this means that the reboot problem I recently met is strongly linked to the 2.6 kernel or at least to its install scripts which might have forgotten something in the upgrade process when Maximilian says most probably a missing lilo run. I answer if lilo hadn't run it would be the upgrade script fault. But as written in comment #10 lilo had run : You already have a LILO configuration in /etc/lilo.conf Running boot loader as requested Testing lilo.conf ... Testing successful. Installing the partition boot sector... Running /sbin/lilo ... Installation successful. using lilo is masochistic, grub is the default since some time. And as I just explained my box was running long before grub became the default. And I have enough problems for now without testing another boot manager -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#410671: iceweasel: firefox leaks filehandles to external applications
I have seen mutt also leaking filehandles but lftp does not. If we could know any other application that also does not leak file handles we would be able to know what code is closing these filehandles and be able to implement it in iceweasel too. Bug#457044: (pas de sujet)
I've found a work around :now I never reboot any distant machine, I never follow the stressing instructions provided : You are attempting to install a kernel version that is the same as the version you are currently running (version 2.6.18-4-686). The modules list is quite likely to have been changed, and the modules dependency file /lib/modules/2.6.18-4-686/modules.dep needs to be re-built. It can not be built correctly right now, since the module list for the running kernel are likely to be different from the kernel installed. I am creating a new modules.dep file, but that may not be correct. It shall be regenerated correctly at next reboot. I repeat: you have to reboot in order for the modules file to be created correctly. Until you reboot, it may be impossible to load some modules. Reboot as soon as this install is finished (Do not reboot right now, since you may not be able to boot back up until installation is over, but boot immediately after). I can not stress that too much. You need to reboot soon. There are so many bugs indicating boot problems for so much different reasons (394608,334831,327335,422217,462221...) that I can't take this risk on distant production servers until I get a solution to really double check the boot process before running it for true. I was unable to choose between yaird and kexec as the informations provided were contradictory... thanks for all anyway -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Jonas Smedegaard a écrit : Those tools are different approaches indeed. How do you find them contradictory? Please elaborate - I sincerely want to understand better. Sorry for being confusing. Saying contradictory I wasn't talking about the tools themselves, but about the comments #43, #48, #53 and #58. As I am myself a bit confused about how to do to ensure a correct reboot of my boxes, this friendly battle between developpers didn't help me very much. Anyway both of those tools seems very useful But my problem is still when a reboot is needed for distant machines, now I'm too afraid about that to take the risk. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#481574: Same kind of crash here

Bug#482100: linux-image-2.6.25-3-686-bigmem : Complete system freeze
Package: linux-image-2.6.25-3-686-bigmem Version: 2.6.25-3-686-bigmem Severity: important I've tried building 2.6.25 Sid kernel from sources with my working .config, resulting in complete system freeze a few minutes or seconds after starting the new kernel. Same result with different config options. So, to rule out misconfiguration I installed the 2.6.25-3-686-bigmem from Sid, it leads to the same result : complete system freeze a few minutes after boot. To rule out alien module responsibility i let the computer run in console mode, no x-server running, no external module loaded (I usually use nvidia's blob and uvcvideo from svn). I got the same symptoms : computer totally non-responsive, keyboard frozen, no input possible. The only output I got before the freeze was : === BUG: soft lockup - cpu#0 stuck for 61s! Bug#481581: [Debian-olpc-devel] Bug#481581: sugar: Sugar can power down the computer
I decided to toy around with Sugar a bit to see what it's all about, and apt-get installed sugar. When clicking on shutdown in the context menu, I was surprised to see that my computer actually shut down, despite /usr/bin/sugar* not carrying any s(u|g)id bit. Given that /sbin/halt refuses to be run by an ordinary user, where does Sugar get the privileges from? The shutdown is done by HAL power management interface called by dbus. I hunted the issue down to being caused by linux-libc-dev. When compiling againt linux-libc-dev 2.6.24-6 it works, when building against 2.6.25-1 it doesn't. The capability.h header changed a lot. We have to check how that influences jsvc. I found out this thread at linux-kernel mailing list: 2.6.25 Kernel - Problems with capabilities http://marc.info/?t=12086307762 I also saw at the capset man page: These two functions are the raw kernel interface for getting and set- ting capabilities. Not only are these system calls specific to Linux, but the kernel API is likely to change and use of these functions (in particular the format of the cap_user_*_t types) is subject to change with each kernel revision. The portable interfaces are cap_set_proc(3) and cap_get_proc(3); if possible you should use those interfaces in applications. If you wish to use the Linux extensions in applications, you should use the easier- to-use interfaces capsetp(3) and capgetp(3). So at commons-daemon-1.0.2~svn20061127/src/native/unix/native/jsvc-unix.c if (syscall(__NR_capset, caphead, cap) 0) { may not be the supported interface to set capabilities. Bug#479534: Screen blanks during splash-enabled boot
Package: usplash Version: 0.5.8-3 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Hello everyone! I have been using usplash ever since I installed Debian on my new computer, and except for minor flaws (that are already tracked) it worked fine. However, for about 2 weeks my screen just blanks very early during boot (less then a second after grub's boot menu) and stays blank until GDM starts X. I don't know if this issue is really caused by usplash. However, when I use nosplash as a kernel parameter, everything works just fine (except for the more ugly boot). So I assume this is somehow related to usplash. Unfortunately, I don't know how to investigate this early stage of the boot process. Please let me know how to provide additional information! For now, the only thing I can do is to describe the symptoms and implications: Most interestingly, when doing a splash-enabled boot, it blanks my screen completely. By this I mean that it puts the screen into some kind of suspend state. It turns the backlight of my laptop's LCD off! It does not merely fill the screen with black content. Other aspects of the boot process don't seem to be affected by this issue. For instance, I'm using LUKS encrypted partitions so cryptsetup asks me for their passwords during boot. When usplash still worked, it used to display appropriate prompts for that. Now, even though I don't see these prompts they still seem to work. I can enter my passwords and continue the boot -- all while staring at a blank screen. (To figure out the right time to enter the passwords I watch the HDD activity indicator LED on my laptop. Once it stops blinking, it's time to enter a password.) One more thing I noticed only recently is that all terminals seem to be broken after a splash-enabled boot, so I cannot change from my Gnome session to a console using Ctrl-Alt-Fx. All the terminals just show a blinking _ in the upper left corner and don't react to input. However, i can use GDM to create additional Gnome/KDE sessions and switch between those using Ctrl-Alt-Fx. Just FYI, this is a sample entry from /boot/grub/menu.lst: title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.24-1-amd64 root(hd0,5) kernel //vmlinuz-2.6.24-1-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/cryptoroot ro quiet splash vga=792 initrd //initrd.img-2.6.24-1-amd64 Of course, in the original file the kernel line does not contain a linebreak. I have a separete boot partition. All grub stuff and all installed Linux kernels come from Debian packages. The only tweaks I did are in menu.lst itself and they are compliant with update-grub. I also tried to get rid of the parameter vga=792, but that did not affect this issue. As shown below, I have different usplash themes/artworks installed. I tried to switch between them using the alternatives mechanism. That does not seem to affect this issue. The one that has been working for me earlier is usplash-theme-debian. Did not test the others before. Hope this was the right place to send this report. If not, please let me know where else I should report this issue! Otherwise, can anyone suggest a reason why this does not work for me but for others? And maybe provide a workaround? Bug#477363: tomcat5.5 5.5.26-1 can not start
Package: tomcat5.5 Version: 5.5.26-1 --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Just want to confirm this bug, since apperently I was not quick enough to report it. In the following some thoughts about it. But you probably got it all sorted already. If so, just ignore this comment... Suggested Bugfix: I fixed the bug by adding an appropriate entry for commons-logging-api.jar to the CLASSPATH of jsvc. Hence I changed line 122 of /etc/init.d/tomcat5.5 to: JSVC_CLASSPATH=/usr/share/java/commons-daemon.jar: $CATALINA_HOME/bin/bootstrap.jar: $CATALINA_HOME/bin/commons-logging-api.jar (Linebreaks added for the sake of clarity. In the original file this is all on one line, with no whitespace in between.) Additional Information: Even before I fixed the bug the init script would always print: * Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat5.5 [ ok ] Apparently, it prints that right after the Tomcat daemon is forked with jsvc. However, Tomcat always crashed at startup and never actually was up. Maybe, the init script should wait until Tomcat is in an up state before exiting. It should issue an error message if Tomcat crashes during startup. (I had to read the syslog to figure out what was wrong.) Is there a way jsvc could be used to achieve that? How do other services do it? I noticed that there are even more JAR files in $CATALINA_HOME/bin/. However, Tomcat only seems to require those mentioned above for startup. Don't know what the others are for. Maybe /etc/default/tomcat5.5 could be used to integrate those and other jars, when needed. It could setup a CLASSPATH variable for Tomcat startup that would be used be the init script. -- Michael Riedel --- System information. --- Architecture: amd64 Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-1-amd64 Debian Release: lenny/sid 500 testing www.debian-multimedia.org 500 testing security.debian.org 500 testing ftp.nz.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends(Version) | Installed -+-= java-gcj-compat-dev (= 1.0.30-5) | OR java2-runtime| libtomcat5.5-java (= 5.5.26-1) | 5.5.26-1 adduser(= 3.34) | 3.107 libecj-java | 3.3.0+0728-8 jsvc(= 1.0.2~svn20061127-6) | 1.0.2~svn20061127-6 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#477658: [cryptsetup] problem related to resuming from encrypted swap partition
Package: cryptsetup Version: 2:1.0.6-1 Severity: normal --- Please enter the report below this line. --- Hi everyone! I'm running a Debian system with both encrypted root and swap partitions. I have been experiencing a problem with suspend-to-disk and the subsequent resume operation that involves the encrypted swap partition. I tracked the problem down to a bug in the cryptsetup package. In the following, I'll try to explain the problem and suggest both a workaround and bugfix... Problem: I don't know the exact suspend-to-disk method i use, since I simple select Hibernate from Gnome's shutqown dialog. However, it is apparent that the swap partition is used to store RAM contents and that initramfs is doing most of the resume work. In case of an LUKS encrypted swap partition cryptsetup has to provide access to that partition during the boot. For that purpose cryptsetup installs a hook script for initramfs-tools, namely /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/cryptroot. That script is supposed to identify all partitions that may need to be decrypted by initramfs during boot. This includes the root partition and any swap partition used for resume. In my case information about the swap partition to use for resume is found in the configuration file /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume. I think, the Debian Installer created this file. Usually it only contains one line, in my case: RESUME=/dev/mapper/cryptoswap. Line 69 of /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/cryptroot tries to use this file to determine which partitions to decrypt during boot. However, the sed scrypt used seems to be buggy. It assumes whitespace where none is present: device=$(sed -rn 's/^RESUME[[:space:]]+=[[:space:]]+// p' \ /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume) Therefore the encrypted swap device is never added to the list of devices to encrypt during boot. Workaround: The trivial workaround of adding appropriate whitespace around the = in the configuration file does not work very well. While this is a worksaround for the mentioned bug, it does break other scripts. There is at least one script that tries to source the configuration file and then use the contents of the environment variable RESUME. However, the syntax for setting an environment variable does not allow any whitespace there. To enable both kinds of usage of the configuration file I added a duplicate line, and thus changed it to: RESUME = /dev/mapper/cryptoswap RESUME=/dev/mapper/cryptoswap This actually fixed my problem of resuming from my encrypted swap partition. However it seems quite messy! Suggested Bugfix: IMHO the bug should be fixed in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/cryptroot itself. I did not try that yet, since I did not want to modify any files outside of /etc. However, changing line 69 to either of the following might do the trick: device=$(sed -rn 's/^RESUME[[:space:]]?=[[:space:]]?// p' \ /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume) device=$(sed -rn 's/^RESUME=// p' \ /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume) Alternatively the script could be modified so that it sources the configuration file and then uses the variable RESUME to determine the device to decrypt. As mentioned, that seems to be the way other scripts do it. Conclusion: I don't know if my use of encrypted partitions is correct let alone typical. But for me it seems to work, except for the mentioned bug. So I'd be happy to see it fixed. Otherwise, could anyone point me to a better way to resume from an encrypted swap partition? BTW, I don't report Debian bugs too often. Sorry. I already tried to report this last week, using reportbug and sendmail, but it didn't seem to work. Now I'm trying with reportbug-ng and icedove. I appologize, if this should be duplicate after all.
