Bug#1027317: whatmaps: lsb module is more in python 3 and so it shows a warning when detecting the distro

2022-12-30 Thread Alberto Fuentes
Package: whatmaps
Version: 0.0.12-4
Severity: minor
Tags: upstream
X-Debbugs-Cc: paj...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

Everytime i run apt it shows "WARNING: Unknown distro but dpkg found, assuming
Debian" because of /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50whatmaps_apt

On further inspection the problem seems to be in whatmaps/distro.py failing to
load lsb module

I had this package manually installed not sure why, so i just uninstalled it to
fix it

$ QT_XCB_GL_INTEGRATION=xcb_egl environment anki

this runs anki sucessfully, although the whole window is black

This is really unfortunate because it broke all programs using qt in 2 of
my computers. I tried to install latest version of the driver (460.32.03
from their website) with the same error. I also tried previous version of
the driver that worked and is the same

I saved the list of packages upgraded that provoked the failure (attached)
and there is no nvidia related packaged

Is there a way to find what is the package conflicting with nvidia driver?.
Maybe using snapshot.debian.org and downgrading (not sure how to do this
tho)

I will also put it on nvidia forums

Sorry, i changed the description as the mantainer of anki suggested

I think is qt related because every program that uses it, exits with the
same error

Thanks for your help Julian!

This is indeed weird. My 2 computers are both running testing, but they
have a different nvidia driver version, a different nvidia card, and,
mostly, a different set of programs installed

The error seems very unhelpful too. Searching it does not say much. There
seems to be a lot of getpid right before giving the error, but no idea why

Kontact is failing with the same error too

It seems to be related with pyqt5, which i checked and was among the

As i mentioned, it happens with both versions.

I can attach a strace of the debian version if you think it can help, but i
expect the lines to be similar

Anki is probably not at fault here, but as i said, both version worked
fined. Im lucky to have anki running in 2 computers running testing. I run
the version from debian in one of them and the latest version from upstream
in the other one

I updated one of the machines and it stopped working. I thought it was
something particular of that computer, but then, a week later, i updated
the other machine, and had the exact same error

I dont know if anki is directly responsible for this error, but something
in debian is, because everything worked until i updated. Can you direct me
to the right package if you think is not at fault here?

Thank you very much for your work!

Also, Im very glad upstream is collaborative with debian efforts

I hate it when the building script downloads random packages and repos in
random commit states. So your effort to make a local build possible is very
much appreciated. It also helps reproducible builds which is a very laudable
goal

Happy new year and besh wishes for you too!

Upstream Author : Joshua 'Pip' Minter - https://github.com/matanui159
* URL : https://github.com/matanui159/ReplaySorcery

  Programming Lang: C
Description : Record a video of the last 30s of your screen to save your
best gaming moments

Emulates nVidia ShadowPlay by constantly recording the screen without using too
many resources. At the press of keycombo, it will save the last 30 seconds

This is useful for saving the best moments of your gaming sessions without
recording everything or maybe being able to record a pesky bug that you cant
trigger or predict

Further info:
There is nothing similar to this in the debian archive and seems a very useful
addition

Bug#820533: appstream: Icons 64x64 is refetched in full on every change

2020-09-19 Thread Alberto Fuentes
Package: appstream
Version: 0.12.11-1
Followup-For: Bug #820533

I wish these files to be fetched. But imho, this has no place while doing apt
update. These fetches **will** block upgrading packages, which makes no sense

Just convert them on some service that feteches them once a day or something,
or even launch it every time you apt update to not change people expectations.
Or 5 minutes after doing apt update so they dont affect apt update speed... or
launch it as a trigger when apt update finishes... So many options

PS: Absolutely every desktop out there will benefit from this. Everybody will
suddenly think, wow, apt got very fast, how did they manage to do this magic?
Kudos to everybody involve. Without knowing somebody put this artificial delay
in the code

Warning: Cannot find word list "en.utf-8.spl" or "en.ascii.spl"

$ locate en.utf-8.spl
/usr/share/vim/vim80/spell/en.utf-8.spl

$ dpkg -S  /usr/share/vim/vim80/spell/en.utf-8.spl
vim-runtime: /usr/share/vim/vim80/spell/en.utf-8.spl

The package could "suggest" vim-runtime and use them if they are already
there

If could not even suggest vim-runtime if you are against that, but use them
anyway if they are there :P

Maybe its not optimal, but I mean, why not. 80% of benefit with 20% of the
work, right?

To save some time to those coming after me trying to use spell files
already shipped with debian on neovim

$ ln -s /usr/share/vim/vim80/spell/ ~/.config/nvim/

on nvim

:set spell

Ive been hibernating this machine successfully since I opened this bug

Yesterday, after running apt full-upgrade, I powered off the computer and
it froze in the power off screen :(

I powered it on and off again and it worked fine again

Maybe I need to do something more than adding reboot=b?

Systemd maintainer has told me that systemd is not responsible for
this bug because

/var/lib/dhcp/ belongs to this package. Is this the right place? :)

Bug#867964: systemd: dhcp ips are not renewed after waking up from hibernation

2017-07-10 Thread alberto fuentes
I filed to systemd because these files

/lib/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate-resume@.service
/lib/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service

belong to systemd

I did mentioned '/var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.leases' but im not sure who is in
charge of renewing ips or what file are used

I understand systemd services are in charge of bring up the network
interfaces... and as it is in charge of the hibernation service as well,
shouldnt it be in charge of renew the ip if its due after waking up?

Probably this bug happens because nobody took responsibility of renewing
the ip if the computer is not up when it expires

/var/lib/dhcp belongs to isc-dhcp-client

Please, could you help me find out whose package this bug should be
redirected to instead of closing it? Probably isc-dhcp-client if this
problem is not systemds

Package: systemd

After waking up from hibernation I expect the system to check
/var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.leases and renew ip if needed

It does not loses connection, since the old ip still works, but dhcp-dns server
doesnt know about the computer because it doesnt renew

Thanks for considering

Bug#524245: [xserver-xorg-input-kbd] Scroll Lock key do not light the Scroll Lock led

2017-02-15 Thread Alberto Fuentes
Package: xserver-xorg-input-kbd
Version: 1:1.9.0-1+b1
Followup-For: Bug #524245

Im not sure this package is responsible of this, because I dont even have it
installed it, but I will add to this report because this is the problem Im
having

There are few reports in ubuntu as well:
https://www.google.com/search?q=launchpad+scroll+lock

This seem to be the only bug about it in bugs.debian.org

Still happens 8y later

This is not a very common key. Actually, I just realize my keyboard have it

Problem is that this is the key synergy uses to lock the mouse on one screen

Since I dont even have this package installed I guess this is not the package
responsible for this key to work.

Anybody happen to know what package this should be redirected to? :)

Bug#854488: thunderbird: show a pop up before the migration

2017-02-07 Thread Alberto Fuentes
Package: thunderbird
Version: 1:45.6.0-3
Severity: normal

I was utterly confused when starting thunderbird telling me there was already
.thunderbird directory and refusing to start

It seems I had clicked the icon twice and the first click had triggered the
migration, copying the .icedove directory (a kinda large directory) and the
second one was finding the copy-in-progress directory

Nothing went wrong and the lock worked fine... But I was baffled for a few
minutes trying to figure out what was happening until I looked the process list
to find out a thunderbird instance copying the .icedove folder

Some popup stating the migration is going to copy the old folder would be
useful :)

Bug#836614:

This is the second time since I got this package 3 years ago that my mentor
has to make an upload, so Im not sure hes around :)

I messaged him privately a week ago, but im also putting it here in case
somebody else can review the fix in this package since the severity has
been raised

Im sorry is not not a one liner to make easier the review, but I think its
not very large fix either. I did switch to dh which I believe auto applies
the hardening

I also did some extra maintenance like dropping the -dbg package which I
believe it auto generates the new -dbgsym packages

you can review it here:

Caps lock works, but no prompt of any kind or mouse cursor on the screen

again fine

Please, dont turn this into something about morale or licenses.

This is one of those rare cases that can be fixed technically.

So far, upstream just wishes not be bothered about what debian does with
his software and rightfully so

He just chose a rather aggressive way to communicate the problem that
debian was causing him using a nagging text

Lets just find a way where our users stop pestering him and call it a day...

This happens all the time in all the projects

Bug#819703: xscreensaver is one of those things that makes people ask me what operating system i am using

2016-04-03 Thread alberto fuentes
A shame that Jamie didnt try to work a solution out with the debian
maintainer instead of the aggressive time bomb...

Also a shame that some maintainers kneejerk reaction to just have it out

Both sides saying indirectly, im big enough and i dont need you

Developers love to have users and users love to use best programs. We are
all in the same boat here after all

As its been already mention, just renaming the program to something like
debian-screensaver (i prefer descriptive names to fun puns) should fix
it... or maybe if upstream prefer we keep the name, we can add a second
line after his email explicitly stating that the bugs should go to our bts
and not upstream

We already do that in projects like kodi...

Probably someone as smart as Jamie can come up with even better solution
that makes him happy and dont waste his time, so we can distribute his
software in the best possible way. We only want to help here and I hope we
can reach an agreement for this particular software, since this is a
recursive problem for linux distributions

We all know about the infamous "debian seems to turn simplest things into
big problems" problem, but im proud of what we try to achieve underneath...
make everything work together, so I ask you Jamie to be patient with us :)

Cheers

I removed the diversion using your line and I tried nomodeset and the
console thing (isolated in separate reboots) and it still worked...

but then I noticed the line of nolog.output from the previous email on tty1:

"modprobe: module nouveau not found in modules.dep"

So I tried to leaving the default /etc/default/grub without your
suggestions and still worked... and it produced the same output it produced
when the diversion was applied :(

This makes me think I didnt remove the diversion properly, although
dpkg-divert --list |grep nou returns nothing and your command said
diversion removed correctly previosly

I included nomodeset on /etc/default/grub and updated grub afterwards. I
dont think I have any special configuration there (it doesnt show up while
running debsumbs -ce nor any other file that seems that might affect). I
attach my grub file nonetheless

This didnt do anything

This finally did it!

sddm always starts with a weird resolution and i dont see the user or
password boxes, but i enter my password blindly, press enters and it logins
with my usual resolutions (this might have to do with the fact that xrandr
showed a ghost vga-1 along with my other two dvi-0 and vga-0)

# journalctl -b and searching for nouveau showed nothing, but in tty1
outside the logs and before the login prompt I can read the text attached
in nolog.output

How that text scape the logs is a good question. I dont have or never had
raids... not sure why is giving the other error

as useless as it might be I also attach modules-load.service.log and
divert.output showing the output of

$ sudo journalctl -b -u systemd-modules-load.service (before the diversion)

and

$ update-initramfs -u (after the diversion)

I have no idea what is triggering nouveau to load. I am the only one having
this issue or is it more general? because I dont think I have many special
configurations

Thanks for your time!

Yup, I rebooted after every install line.

Also, in the past I had to remove xorg.conf file to be able to get back to
nouveau, because some line was added there trying to load nvidia (I took me
a while to understand the post removal message was about this file)

I thought maybe it was loaded as a fallback or something

I have no idea how to debug this either, but i'll try to do the legwork to
find out whats going on... I dont seem to be able to find anything with
this new systemd logging

I attached journal.sid file in the previous mail showing the bootup log.
Theres a line saying

proc_dir_entry 'driver/nvidia' already registered

followed by a backtrace and followed by

NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine was not called for 1 device(s).

Also, the experimental segfault seems to be a different problem. Should I
open it in a different bug?

Bug#803200:

2015-12-16 Thread alberto fuentes
More info on this bug...

reading about blacklisting on

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_modules#Blacklisting

blacklist nouveau seems to be a soft kind of blacklisting, thats it, if
something depends on it, it will load it anyway

There is no mkinitcpio binary in debian, but the solution seems to be to
use some strong blacklist, like adding a file in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add the line

install nouveau /bin/false

And run update-initramfs -u afterwards... but the module keeps loading on
my machine, no matter what I do

I attach lsmod |grep nou to show the module and dependences loaded...

Im a little at lost, since I dont know much about this... If a third person
more knowledgeable about this reads the bug, the input (even if only
pointing a general direction to look for more info) would be really
appreciated :)

Im willing to do all the reboots needed, but im going to replace my gpu
really soon and maybe after that I wont be able to try anymore :(

Moving this stuff out of ~/.config would be nice

Following XDG* env variables or at least hardcode them

for example ~/.cache/hexchat/scrollback for scrollback or
~/.local/share/hexchat/logs for the logs

Thanks for your consideration

oh, and the other benefit of fixing the redirect is that you dont need to
backport the fix :)

Posibly a misconfiguration or a bug in apache?

Is the configuration hes using available somewhere to take a look?

I would mail him about this, but I think that by keeping it in this bug
more people can contribute to it, since im no master of apache :)

pastebinit follows redirects until it gets a 200, and thats the url that it
outputs. Following some 302 http -> https is no different

Of course, changing the url to https in the conf as OP suggests will work
as well if this is the only program using that redirect... whatever works
faster for everybody x)

Thanks!

I was asking because is common that the developer and the sysadmin is not
the same person, and this seems more of a problem for the sysadmin of the
apache service. It seems hes both!

I think theres a bug in the redirection, pastebinit should be able to
handle redirections without a problem.

I didnt find somwhere to report a bug against paste.debian.net the service,
thats why i reported it here and put Alexander on copy

Is he the one to talk about redirections?

I attach a patch that I think fix this bug. It is set to private by default

Set it to 0 in the conf if you think it would be better not to set it by
default and make the user use -P from the command line instead

Bug#799580: redirects http https in paste.debian.net

2015-10-13 Thread alberto fuentes
I put Alexander in copy since Im not sure where to report about this bug,
and maybe he knows where to forward it

I think that on top of your fix, there is a bug in https://paste.debian.net
as well

redirects links are messing with the content. Check out this example

curl -I '
http://paste.debian.net/?expire=604800=0=%23++This+file+is+part+of+systemd.%0A%23%0A%23++systemd+is+free+software%3B+you+can+redistribute+it+and%2For+modify+it%0A%23++under+the+terms+of+the+GNU+Lesser+General+Public+License+as+published+by%0A%23++the+Free+Software+Foundation%3B+either+version+2.1+of+the+License%2C+or%0A%23++%28at+your+option%29+any+later+version.%0A%0A%5BUnit%5D%0ADescription%3DFile+System+Check+Daemon+to+report+status%0ADocumentation%3Dman%3Asystemd-fsckd.service%288%29%0ADefaultDependencies%3Dno%0ARequires%3Dsystemd-fsckd.socket%0ABefore%3Dshutdown.target%0A%0A%5BService%5D%0AExecStart%3D%2Flib%2Fsystemd%2Fsystemd-fsckd%0AStandardOutput%3Djournal%2Bconsole%0A=person=text

it returns:

which messes the line breaks, and so the page is returning this error:

Could not add your entry to the paste database:
Thanks to some spammers you need to provide at least 2 linebreaks

This is what really breaks pastebinit, since it tries to follow redirects
otherwise

So many things wont work without space, but everything worked up to the
point of login... and wont work afterwards. That looks like a good point to
inform the user about the problem

I dont expect the dm to check for space all the time, but whatever layer is
failing, the session in this case, will report an error (or crash? i dont
really know what is happening) and the dm will take over again. I dont feel
we are being too friendly with the user if we show them an error for a very
common problem

Handling it soundly would be to recover. Or to be able to get the error
from the session or possible a third thing i dont know about

That would be nice, but I dont expect that. I expect a one line check for
space that will get 80% of the benefits with 1% of the time of a proper
solution

I wont defend this any longer tho... If you still disagree, please close
this bug

thanks for maintaining lightdm!

not sure who is in fault... the device had a very small disk and basically
a / partition

Its my belief that the dm is in charge of inform the user of problems
during the login, even if this erros are generated by another layer

What layer do you think should report this error if at all, Yves ?

Basically what i am asking with this bug is, should this error be reported
to the user by the DM or not at all and let the user put this puzzle
together by themselves as any aceptable and responsible grown up should be
able to do anyway??

Bug#708508: these bugs are taking forever

2015-06-27 Thread alberto fuentes
I had trouble following the instruction to make this work, so i installed
the upstream version to see what was really doing

I attach install.sh, a script i created to install these binaries using
the installed poppler-utils package, including the modifications included
upstream.

please, notice these bugs mention version 3.02 but zotero is using version
3.04 of these binaries now... dont know what extra thing they did to them
since...

also note, this script only work for amd64. Adjust it if you are using i386

restore · restore is the opposite of a backup. It copies backed up

everything in a generation, or just selected files. Without other options, it
restores latest backup done on the current directory

Bug#783169: alternatives

2015-04-24 Thread alberto fuentes
There is this package from kde in debian called storageservicemanager
that supposedly is able to sync google-drive folders. It didnt work to
me be, maybe due to this same api shift from google. I dont know if it
is as unmaintained upstream as this one (because if that is the reason,
this has been deprecated for a while afaik)

While not a drop in replacement, I was able to move all my files from
google-drive to sparkleshare, which is packaged in debian and it is very
easy to set up in your own server. It even allows you to save encrypted
folders on the server very easily. You can find an script to help you
prepare your server in the upstream website (which is not packaged
afaik). I used preparing your server instead of installing it
intentionally since it only creates a user in the server and allows to
connect with it via a git-shell and nothing else

the packaged version in the archive is 1.2 and upstream is version 1.4

Hope it helps somebody else ;)

Bug#777703: tt-rss: upstream stopped versioning and backported stable releases

2015-02-11 Thread Alberto Fuentes
Package: tt-rss
Severity: normal

http://tt-rss.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10t=3262

upstream stopped versioning tt-rss. I have a couple of questions regarding this

How are you going to handle this new non-release scheme?

Im running my own backported version in wheezy right now and maybe we can
figure out a way to keep this package backported to jessie once is released

Im really tempted to start running the git head and forget about the debian
packaging given that upstream does not seem to care at all

What do you think?

SUID security sandbox program that reduces the risk of security breaches by
restricting the running environment of untrusted applications using namespaces
and seccomp-bpf. It allows a process and all its descendants to have their own
private view of the globally shared kernel resources, such as the network
stack, process table, mount table.
..
Can sandbox any type of processes: servers, graphical applications, and even
user login sessions. Written in C with virtually no dependencies, it should
work on any Linux computer with a 3.x kernel version.

There is no other software that do this in the repos that Im aware of

Bug#762823: quake2: checksum and file name missing

2015-01-23 Thread alberto fuentes
On Fri, Jan 23, 2015 at 1:58 PM, Simon McVittie s...@debian.org wrote:
If you can briefly describe where you got this particular copy of
Quake II (e.g. publisher? country? original retail version vs.
some budget re-issue? etc.) that would also be good, but if you can't
 remember those details that's fine - I know a lot of people's
copies of 90s games like this have moved from PC to PC for
years without going back to the original media :-)

There is probably no need to guess. .pk3 can be easily unpackaged and
directories can be diffed (diff of binaries within probably won't tell
much i'm afraid tho)

 We could maybe add the 64-player DM maps and q2ctf4a as well;
those are a total of 8M compressed, which I think is on the borderline
between just put it in quake2-full-data and it's worth introducing
quake2-bonus-data so people don't *have* to download it. Thoughts?
(If it's separate, we should not enable the auto-download until #775080
 is fixed.)

In my opinion is not worth it to add the burden of another package to
the repository to separate it for a package that is going to be huge
already (compared to average size of a package) and that is meant to
be installed on modern desktops with plenty of available space

Thanks for working on this!!

I think there's value on this even if it is hard for the average
person to install (compared with a regular apt-get install)

Bug#762823: quake2: checksum and file name missing

2015-01-23 Thread alberto fuentes
On Fri, Jan 23, 2015 at 7:35 PM, Simon McVittie s...@debian.org
The packages produced by game-data-packager cannot be in the repository
in any case. Data is managed by game-data-packager either because it is
not intended to be redistributed at all (full games like Quake II and
their paid-for expansions), or because it is intended to be distributed
without payment, but the actual copyright license is too demanding or
too ambiguous to be safe to upload to non-free (most of the patches,
 demos, shareware, etc.).

So the number of packages in the Debian archive is not relevant here,
only the number of packages on g-d-p users' computers.

Right...

I of course knew that, but still mixed it up :/

Does the same rationale referring to size still apply?

if the difference of size with and without extras is not big, I don't
think is worth it to worry about it. The target platforms are modern
desktops with plenty of space. (modern as in an hd or sd card bought
in the last 10 years)

Anyway, up to you!

Thanks again for the work on this!

Could you please elaborate where did you see 'IORW'?

If you add the IO_RATE it shows as IORW. I attach capture

Bug#774930: htop shows IORW. Man page says IO

2015-01-09 Thread Alberto Fuentes
Package: htop
Version: 1.0.3-1
Severity: minor

IORW can be confused with IOWR, but both seems okay as long as the they match
what says in the man page as searching IORW in the man page shows nothing

Also, RBYTES (IO_RBYTES) says Bytes of read(2) I/O for the process but a better
explanation would be nice because sometimes it shows decimal numbers. As in
1.88. Not sure how to read 1.88 bytes, but is probably due to refreshing times
and being the number of bytes read divided by the number of secs it took to
refresh?

Thanks!

I think this is a very nasty regression that will hit relatively few
people but will really piss them off.

Not sure why you think they will be few people affected. I think almost
everybody is going to be hit by this at least once... probably more than
once. Computers have hard drives attached. They are checked at
semi-random intervals. If the hard drives is relatively large, it can
take from 20min to more than 1h to check.

I was biten by this once a month until one time I had to do a
presentation and the computer refused to bootup without checking the
disks, then decided to write the bug and disable checking on the disks
risking corruption

In my experience, systemd has introduced various different *new* ways in
which the boot can get stuck in some long-running operation (which
might just be waiting for a timeout). If we don't want to alienate
users, we should raise the severity of this bug (and broaden its scope).

While I agree and something generic and well implemented should be put
in place, i would be well off with a hack to interrupt it.

It would take less than 15 min to implement it to the systemd people to
avoid this 10+ years regresion. Calling a pre-script,or pre-service or
however systemd works

echo 'press ctrl - C to interrupt'; sleep 3;systemd-f*ck

I dont know the details of how it would go in systemd but I dont think
this hack cant be put in place with the mighty systemd, can it?

The major problem is that the computer refuses to bootup without doing
the preventive check. Not even a reboot because you missed the ctrl - c
screen will help and you are forced to wait like is 1999

At the very least I would add 'patience is a virtue' or 'go outside and
play!' under the check. There is no reason not to joke about it :P

Happy holidays

Bug#758902: systemd: Please make ^C interrupt systemd-fsck

File systems created with mk2fs on fresh Wheezy and Jessie installs have
mount-count and time based file checking disabled. That's quite a few
people who are never liable to experience a surprise fsck.

My hunch tells me that there are more fs pre-wheezy than post-wheezy
out there, considering Wheezy was only released ~1.5 years ago

Disabling perodic checking (which upstream doesn't regard as conferring
any particular benefit) eliminates the surprise factor. Without elements
of surprise and inconvenience to combat there is no need to overstrive
for a solution. A fsck can always be run by a user as part of regular
 maintenance.

Well, I just learned this. It's good to know that upstream think is
safe and good to know that the default was changed as well. I wish the
defaults of my partitions had changed on the upgrade as well

Wishlist is about right for this bug; there isn't a lower severity
 level.

hehe.

At least is mentioned once in this bug that the *recommended upgrade
path* for your ext fs includes to disable the automatic check on the
fs, and so prevent this bug from happening in the future

[...]
The first statement is misleading; new Wheezy and Jessie users would
disagree with it. They also realise that the consequences of enabling
mount-count or time based file checking falls on them, not someone else.

If it is indeed misleading let me rephrase it.

The system refuses to bootup until the check is done to anybody that
has a partition formated with defaults values provided by debian
before ~1.5 years.

For example, if you are installing wheezy, but you are using a /home
partition from a previous installation, you are still affected by this
bug

IMOH, It's a really bad attitude to not take into account most of the
user base of your installations, especially in transitions like the
systemd one, where there's already plenty of bad blood

I love debian very much, and so this is nothing i can't deal with...
but I understand people which are at the edge

Cheers

I believe that more information on how to reproduce this bug is needed.

Installation halts in my system as well. Im not sure whose fault it
is, but I can do the tests you need me to do to find out.
