Bug#1037468: nvidia-driver: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x25:0x65:1457)

2023-06-13 Thread Allan Wind
Package: nvidia-driver
Version: 525.105.17-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

The upgrade to 12 was smooth except the nvidia-driver did not load
after rebooting on my Lenovo P51 with:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM206GLM [Quadro M2200
Mobile] (rev a1)

I get a few dmesg then a blank screen with a cursor. Not able
to change to a virtual terminal. I also also tried the version in
experimental with similar effect:

Version: 525.105.17-1

2023-06-12T06:14:43.764+00:00 vent kernel: NVRM: GPU :01:00.0:

2023-06-13T02:02:39.056+00:00 vent systemd[1]: lightdm.service: Failed with

I do have non-free-firmware enabled and hence the nvidia firmware.
Upgraded bios to latest version No difference if I use
linux-image 6.1.0-9-amd64 or 5.10.0-23-amd64.

The only semi-workaround is to uninstall the nvidia driver and
rely on nouveau. Surprisingly to me, nouveau, doesn't seem to
require the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package to be installed(?).

Bug#1006992: linux-image-5.10.0-12-amd64: Loading initial ramdisk... freezes

2022-03-09 Thread Allan Wind
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.10.103-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When I upgraded from buster (10) to bullseye (11) this host would
freeze when rebooting into a new kernel (including all point
releases of 5.10.0) and (cold reboot) by issuing /sbin/poweroff
then pressing the power button. I am pretty sure it will also
usually, but not always (<50?) freeze on /sbin/reboot into the
same kernel.

When the boot process freezing there is no output after "Loading
initial ramdisk". Removing "quiet" and adding "debug" does not
yield any debug output. I have tried dis_ucode_ldr and nomodeset
which did not make a difference with respect to freezing.

The host is running the latest UEFI BIOS and ECP. It also happens
to use ECC memory and there are no faults.

There were no issues with this host under buster (10), i.e. I
suspect a kernel change triggered this change in behavior.

I also have a P50 (previous hardware model) on the same version of
Debian and it does NOT freeze.

My current work-around is to force power cycle the host by holding
down the power button, then press the power button again then press
enter and subsequently f1 to enter the bios. Then save & exit.
Most of the time (80+%) the system would boot normally. It
displays the kernel output with quiet disabled as expected.

I did review #931639 but appears to be a different issue. Happy
to provide additional details (using this as my workstation so I
can't reinstall buster).

/Allan

Bug#984429: (no subject)

2021-08-17 Thread Allan Wind

Is Recommends enough if the package generate errors without rtkit? After I
upgraded 3 hosts to Debian 11 I got 86 instances of these errors. It was
somewhat problematic as you are trying to figure out what matters in the deluge
of errors after upgrading.

Bug#992202: tmux doesn't read tmux.conf upon login

2021-08-15 Thread Allan Wind
Package: tmux
Version: 3.1c-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I just upgraded to bullseye and on subsequent login tmux doesn't
appear to read tmux.conf. This worked fine in buster. I start 3
instances via i3:

exec i3-msg "workspace 1; exec x-www-browser; exec x-terminal-emulator -e tmux"
exec i3-msg "workspace 2; exec x-terminal-emulator -e tmux; exec pidgin"
exec i3-msg "workspace 3; exec x-terminal-emulator -e tmux new mutt"

The 3 instances show up as `tmux ls` so it is running, and I can
use the default C-b prefix instead (but my customized C-a does not
work).

The work-around is to exit all 3 instances before a subsequent
start of tmux will read my tmux.conf file and behave as expected.
(I moved ~/.tmux.conf to .config/tmux/.tmux.conf but neither
location matters for the initial start-up).

I ran strace -ff tmux and I did not see an access or open of
the tmux.conf file.

Please let me know what data I can provide to help.

Bug#989233: malloc(): smallbin double linked list corrupted

2021-05-29 Thread Allan Wind

Package: newsboat
Version: 2.13-1+deb10u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I am getting this error once in a while:

"malloc(): smallbin double linked list corrupted"

and the program exists and leaves the terminal in a modified
state. echo disabled, I think. Sorry, I did not think of

running stty to figure out what.

I have not been able to reproduce the issue. This looks
potentially interesting:

Bug#973265: Acknowledgement (pulseaudio: linux-image-4.19.0-12-amd64: load-module initialization failed)

2020-10-28 Thread Allan Wind

http://sprunge.us/MZ0QsN

I ran fuser -a on /dev/snd/* after stopping pulseaudio,
so it appears something in the configuration is now conflicting.
default.pa worked fine for over a year.

Reverted to using custom profile to select between headphone and
speaker (hoping the issue with mono audio has been resolved since
I tried last time).

Bug#960646: Never mind

2020-05-15 Thread Allan Wind

This can be closed as an user error.

fail2ban is executing two statements and I was able to reproduce
the non-descriptive error message "Could not process rule: No such
file or directory'" by running:

nft add set inet filter f2b-sshd \{ type ipv4_addr\; \}

Then I ran the above command with ip instead of inet and it
worked, and blocked ips were being added chains as verified

by :

nft list table inet filter

On a subsequent restart, fail2ban was now failing with the same
error message but now using ip instead of inet so I reverted the
change I suggested initially and I was able to run the first
command as is.

Then I ran the 2nd command:

nft insert rule inet filter INPUT meta l4proto tcp ip saddr @f2b-sshd
reject

and got the same useless error message as before. I noticed
earlier that `nft list table inet filter` had the chain
as lowercase input, so I tried that and it worked. This the
relevant jail.conf configuration:

[DEFAULT]
chain = input

Previously, I used chain = INPUT with iptables. Hopefully this
helps someone else as it had me stumped.

2020-05-14 Thread Allan Wind
Package: fail2ban
Version: 0.10.2-2.1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have been using fail2ban for a long time with iptables-allports:

banaction = iptables-allports
banaction = iptables-allports

With over 50k+ IPs being banned I figured that I might benefit from the
perceived lower overhead of nftables so changed it to:

banaction = nftables-allports
banaction_allports = nftables-allports

fail2ban was immediately reporting errors when I started it:

I found, through trial and error, that the issue appears to be
nftables_family = inet so I added action.d/nftables-common.local
file with:

[Init]
nftables_family = ip

Which seem to work.

Looked at the current upstream version and it's configuration file
is significantly different to the one that ships it buster to easily
compare. It does appear though, that they set to inet so not sure
what the deal is.

Happy to help,

/Allan

Bug#960329: lightdm: Error getting user list from org.freedesktop.Accounts

2020-05-11 Thread Allan Wind

Package: lightdm
Version: 1.26.0-4
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

accountsservice was using a lot of CPU on my system from time to
time, so I purged it. lightdm does not depend on accountsservice
(like gdm3), but report errors if the package is not installed:

2020-05-11T19:01:03.247+00:00 vent lightdm[639]: Error getting user list from

org.freedesktop.Accounts:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name

I don't see anything in the lightdm configuration files that tells
me how to disable the use of accountsservice to placate the error. There
probably should be. I don't have a use for .dmrc (re #690898) but
presumably that would be a work-around.

Bug#960163: nvidia-driver: x86/modules: Skipping invalid relocation

2020-05-10 Thread Allan Wind

The good news is that I have the nvidia module working again,
and it's probably a weird edge case:

(1) nvidia-drivers version 418.113-1 is not compatible with linux
   4.19.0-5 headers and fail to load with relocation error, and

(2) When I was running 4.19.0-9-amd64 (with nouveau),
   `dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-kernel-dkms` rebuild the nvidia
   module against the -5 headers and they ended up in
   /lib/modules/4.19.0-9-amd64 which failed to load (i.e. (1)).

Since my attempt yesterday, I purged the -5 kernel, and
`dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-kernel-dkms` now failed with missing
headers. I then purged the -5 headers and installed the -9
headers and upon reboot nvidia module was loaded.

I purged linux-image-amd64 a while ago when I explored
kernel/nvidia combinations as possible work-around for another bug
#905309 (and #922497).  This meant that I didn't get -9 and hit
(1) when I thought I was doing a low-risk (stable) upgrade.

Re (1) I don't know _if_ or _how_ Debian should address this
actually, it's incompatibility with the combination of
nvidia-driver 418.113-1 and linux-headers-4.19.0-5 that only shows
up at run-time on the subsequent reboot.

Re (2) seems like a straight build defect. If linux-image version
x is installed then linux-headers x is used to build a module

for linux-image y (probably as a fallback). This fails
with a pre-build check if linux-image x not installed.

That is not the current buster kernel (which would be 4.19.0-9).

Do you have any compiler/binutils/... installed that is not from buster?

Bug#960163: nvidia-driver: x86/modules: Skipping invalid relocation

2020-05-09 Thread Allan Wind

Package: nvidia-driver
Version: 418.113-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Dear Maintainer,

I upgraded to 10.4 and on the subsequent reboot lightdm and X
failed to start, and in syslog I found the following error
message:

2020-05-10T03:28:57.914+00:00 vent kernel: module: x86/modules:
Skipping invalid relocation target, existing value is
nonzero for type 1, loc 08f75532, val c1819a08
If I try to install the kernel module with `modprobe
nvidia-current`, I get a similar error message. Tried
dpgk-reconfigure nvidia-driver and nvidia-kernel-dkms which
rebuilds the module but it makes no difference after reboot.

I ran `apt purge nvidia-* libnvidia*` and found that after a
reboot that I got X & lightdm running using the nouveau driver.

Reinstalled nvidia-driver and back to where I started.
apt/history.log tells me that the 10.4 upgrade was this
nvidia-driver change:

nvidia-driver:amd64 (418.74-1, 418.113-1)

allan@vent:~$ cat /proc/version

Happy to help.

That said, I am not really sure this even works. The only reference I see to
varnishlog is:

root@pawan:/# find /lib/systemd/ /etc -name varnishlog\*
/etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/varnishlog.service
/etc/default/varnishlog
/etc/init.d/varnishlog

and varnishlog.service is a dangling symlink to:

/lib/systemd/system/varnishlog.service

it seems to some type of left-over from a previous version:

dpkg -S varnishlog
varnish: /usr/bin/varnishlog
varnish: /etc/init.d/varnishlog
varnish: /usr/share/man/man1/varnishlog.1.gz
varnish: /etc/default/varnishlog

So I stopped the service the service and removed the file:

# systemctl disable varnishlog.service
# systemctl stop varnishlog.service
# rm /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/varnishlog.service

I wanted to document this, but maybe there is a cleanup process missing
somewhere?

Bug#932858: smtp.montor: hostname() doesn't accept any arguments

2019-07-23 Thread Allan Wind
Package: mon
Version: 1.3.3-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

smtp.montitor contains two two warnings from Sys::Hostname::hostname in
the Summary and Detail:

Summary: hostname() doesn't accept any arguments. This will become fatal in
Perl
5.32 at /usr/lib/mon/mon.d/smtp.monitor line 248.

Detail: hostname() doesn't accept any arguments. This will become fatal
in Perl 5.32 at /usr/lib/mon/mon.d/smtp.monitor line 181.

This is because the function is called as which implicitly
passed @_ (at call site), i.e. hostname(@_). This defect is easy enough
to fix, namely, change the two lines from:

$OurHostname =

to:

$OurHostname = hostname();

nvidia-driver 390.87 crashes the kernel on the host where I had
this issue, so I think the technical correct answer is "unknown".

This is an intermittent issue, at times minutes apart, but mostly
weeks or months. Is the required hard reboot that really makes
this awful. If it helps, I can report back in 3 months on
the unstable version currently 410.93-2.

nvidia-modeset is using 100% cpu.  The only thing unusual in syslog is:

Is this still reproducible with the 390.xx driver now in stretch?

Thanks Andreas.

I doubt NVIDIA will spend any cycles on troubleshooting issues
with an older driver.

About a year ago I reported #905309 to the forum that NVIDIA says
is the official support channel for Linux driver issues. I never
heard back.

The main reason why I filed the bug report was to document the
workaround should anyone else hit this. It is highly unusual

for a stable upgrade to cause an issue of this magnitude.

There haven't been similar reports with the 390.xx driver from
stretch-backports or with the 390.xx driver in sid (with newer kernels
than 4.9) - maybe it is specific to your card. Or some other hardware.

There is nothing we can do about bugs in the proprietary driver. And I
expect you don't want to try reporting this upstream - since you have a
working configuration now, and getting useful information if the system
fails to boot is difficult.

Bug#905309: nvidia-modeset: WARNING: GPU:0: Lost display notification (0:0x00000000); continuing

2018-08-02 Thread Allan Wind

Package: nvidia-driver
Version: 384.130-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Dear Maintainer,

I noticed the fan on my laptop was spinning at full speed which
signifies heavy load. Screens suspended, and they don't
unsuspend when I pressed the keyboard. I ssh into the machine
remotely, and see that nvidia-modeset is using 100% cpu. The
only thing unusual in syslog is:

2018-08-02T22:49:34.702+00:00 vent kernel: nvidia-modeset:
WARNING: GPU:0: Lost display notification (0:0x);
continuing.

sysstat suggest load went up shortly before 21:25 UTC (100% on 1
cpu of 8 is 12.50%)

I initiated a reboot via ssh, but my system was still hanging
after a few minutes. Hard power cycled laptop to restore
service.

I have had similar issues in the past but never narrowed it down
to the process. At best this is intermittent, maybe, months
apart. Happy to provide additional data next time this happens.
What would be helpful?

Bug#900031: linux-image-4.9.0-7-amd64 4.9.110-1

2018-07-19 Thread Allan Wind

Dear Maintainer,

As indicated earlier I reverted to -5, and it has been stable for
a few months for me (i.e. since ~2018-5-20 localtime). With the
recent upgrade to stable, I upgraded to -7 and rebooted
yesterday. Today I got my first kernel issues, and including
them here in case it is useful. Reverting to -5 again.

Bug#878032: postgresql: apt-get purge of 9.4 removed service for 9.6

2017-10-08 Thread Allan Wind
Package: postgresql
Version: 9.6+181
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I recently upgraded my server which pulled in 9.6. Then I manually
migrated the configuration and data and then I purged the old version
with:

# apt-get purge postgresql-9.4  postgresql-client-9.4 postgresql-contrib-9.4
postgresql-doc-9.4

Surprisingly that also stopped my 9.6 instance and the service disappeared:
disappeared:

# systemctl |grep postgresql
  system-postgresql.slice
 loadedactive active
system-postgresql.slice

To restore service, I did

# dpkg-reconfigure postgresql-9.6
# systemctl |grep postgresql
  postgresql.service
 loadedactive exited
PostgreSQL RDBMS
  postgresql@9.6-main.service
 loadedactive running
PostgreSQL Cluster 9.6-main
  system-postgresql.slice
 loadedactive active
system-postgresql.slice

To me this appears to be defective, and apologize if I missed an existing
report or if this should be filed against another package.

Bug#873573: avahi-daemon: packet loss

2017-08-28 Thread Allan Wind
Package: avahi-daemon
Version: 0.6.32-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I installed Debian 9.1 on a Lenovo P50 and with no customizations other
than what the installer afforded me I was observing packet loss every
few minutes. ssh to this host would hang for seconds to minutes at a
time, say, every few minutes. I installed mtr on a remote host, and
within 200 to 250 packets it would report significant packet loss.
tcpdump showed that ping packets were not being received on this host
for almost a minute. tcpdump from remote host showed pings being sent
every second but no response. I duplicated packet loss with a 3rd
remote host. Replaced the cable and switch between this and remote host,
and were still able to reproduce the issue.

By chance, I booted this host into recovery mode, and added my ethernet
interface to /etc/network/interfaces then systemctl start networking.
Then retried the mtr scenario and found no packet loss. I then
bi-sected between recovery (rescue.target?) and graphical.target to
determine that if I did not start avahi-daemon or services that depends
on it I would not be seeing packet loss along these lines (commented out
lines would cause packet loss):

#!/bin/bash
systemctl start basic.target
systemctl start anacron.service
systemctl start apache2.service
#systemctl start avahi-daemon.service
systemctl start console-setup.service
systemctl start cron.service
#systemctl start cups-browsed.service
#systemctl start cups.path
systemctl start dbus.service
systemctl start hddtemp.service

systemctl start ssh.service
systemctl start systemd-ask-password-wall.path
systemctl start systemd-logind.service
systemctl start systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service
systemctl start systemd-user-sessions.service

Finally, I apt-get pruge avahi-daemon and rebooted and not seeing any
packet loss since.

ifconfig did not show any errors on this or rmeote end.

2016-09-08 Thread Allan Wind
Package: libscrypt0
Version: 1-2.2
Severity: grave
Tags: upstream
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

The use case of the -dev library, as documented in the README.txt, is:

#include
#include
#include

#define PASSWORD "test"

int main() {
char mcf[SCRYPT_MCF_LEN + 1];
libscrypt_hash(mcf, PASSWORD, SCRYPT_N, SCRYPT_r, SCRYPT_p);
assert(libscrypt_check(mcf, PASSWORD) > 0);
return 0;
}

You compile the program with:

gcc -lm -lscrypt scrypt-test.c -o scrypt-test

and it fails with:

allan@vent:~/src/yaxto$ ./scrypt-test
scrypt-test: scrypt-test.c:10: main: Assertion `libscrypt_check(mcf, "test") >

Bug#514540: aptitude: Option:Aptitude::UI::Minibuf-Prompts and limits not playing nice together

2015-09-08 Thread Allan Wind
Hi Manuel,

I cannot reproduce this any more, and concur with your
conclusion to close it.

Btw, when I tried to reproduce it I added this file to
.aptitude/config (forgetting the ;):

aptitude::UI::Minibuf-Prompts "true"

which gave me the error:

E: Syntax error /home/allan/.aptitude/config:6: Extra junk at end of file
E: Syntax error /home/allan/.aptitude/config:6: Extra junk at end of file
[Ok]

The error message should probably not be duplicated. Aptitude
subsequently overwrite the configuration with what it could
parse which means I lost my configuration. The latter appears to
be Bug#472701.

Bug#787859: rss2email: Most links wrap

2015-06-05 Thread Allan Wind
Package: rss2email
Version: 1:3.9-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After I upgraded to jessie the rss2email package starting
wrapping most links (irregardless of what body-width). When I
subsequently use urlview to extract urls for browser user, it
only finds the partial urls which are usually invalid. This
essentially renders the package useless.

I attached an example output which shows that [[link]] line
breaks after key-.

Not sure this has to be markdown instead of just plain text with
rfc compliant links, but that is different discussion I guess.

Bug#787791: xdg-utils: xdg-open incorrect browser update-alternatives

2015-06-04 Thread Allan Wind
Package: xdg-utils
Version: 1.1.0~rc1+git20111210-7.4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I tried to open a link in Pidgin which was configured to use the browser
Desktop Default. Instead of using Iceweasel as expected it opened the link in
Chrome. Checked on update-alternatives and I have iceweasel as my preference.
Then I tried to check on xgd-settings which was unhelpful:

allan@vent:~$ xdg-settings get default-web-browser
xdg-settings: unknown desktop environment

Maybe use the same logic as xdg-open which has:

detectDE

if [ x$DE = x ]; then
DE=generic
fi

Although maybe defectDE should just return generic? There are many copies of
this function it seems. I run xmonad without a desktop environment.

Downloaded the Pidgin source to figure out that it calls xdg-open. The man
page for xdg-open is unhelpful to figure out where it is getting that setting
from so I traced the script to figure out that it calls `xdg-mime query default
x-scheme-handler/http`. The man page for xdg-mime is unhelpful to figure out
where it gets its information from, so I trace that script to finally find the
source as /usr/share//applications/defaults.list. To me it is weird that a
configuration file lives in /usr/share.

The defaults.list file contains no references to Iceweasel, so not sure if
Iceweasel should populate that file. It didn't, btw, when I reconfigured
iceweasel.

I noticed that trace shows that the per-user file
$HOME/.local/share//applications/mimeapps.list.  Neither man -k
mimeapps.list or mimeapps yield anything, so I copy this to the
file and call it a day:

[Default Applications]
application/xhtml=iceweasel.desktop;
text/html=iceweasel.desktop;
text/xml=iceweasel.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/ftp=iceweasel.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/http=iceweasel.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/https=iceweasel.desktop;

I had to look in that file anyways to figure out what to configure, so using
xdg-mime just didn't seem worth it, now that I think about what program I could
have used.

I noticed that xgd-open sets the BROWSER variable to what seems most sensible:

BROWSER=x-www-browser:firefox:seamonkey:mozilla:epiphany:konqueror:chromium-browser:google-chrome:www-browser:links2:elinks:links:lynx:w3m

but then never used. I already configured my system preference with
x-www-browser so xdg-open should really consult that data source.

Shouldn't xdg-mime have an easy way to query its entire database? I would have
zero chance of guessing that I needed to configure x-scheme-handler/http, or
the rest of them.

Anyways, feel free to down-prioritize, I am probably the rare exception running
without a desktop environments, and split what would be helpful to individual
tickets.

Bug#730202: fail2ban should not use space in ident when logging to syslog

Package: fail2ban
Version: 0.8.6-3wheezy2
Severity: minor

Gergely tells me in Bug#725668 that syslog(-ng) will split the ident
from message on space, so rather than ident being fail2ban.filter it
will be fail2ban.filter and the message becomes : INFO instead
of the expected INFO This cause problems for syslog-ng which has
filtering and flexible logging capabilities.

The level, INFO, btw, should not be encoded in the message string, but
leave that for syslog to record in whatever what it is configured.

It looks like the action is here:

server/server.py:
def setLogTarget(self, target):

if target == SYSLOG:
# Syslog daemons already add date to the
message.
formatter = logging.Formatter(%(name)-16s:
%(levelname)-6s %(message)s)
facility =
logging.handlers.SysLogHandler.LOG_DAEMON
hdlr =
logging.handlers.SysLogHandler(/dev/log,

  facility = facility)
where the proposed formatting line should be:

formatter = logging.Formatter(%(name)s:
%(message)s)

Not sure if there is anything else to do to pass the correct logging level to
syslog.

At work we filter on priority and include that the level as a

odd.

Bug#619349: Starting HTTP accelerator: varnishd failed! dpkg: error processing varnish (--configure)

2011-03-22 Thread Allan Wind
Package: varnish

Starting HTTP accelerator: varnishd failed!
invoke-rc.d: initscript varnish, action start failed.
dpkg: error processing varnish (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
configured to not write apport reports

However I was able to stop and start varnish just fine via
/etc/init.d/varnish {stop,start}

I ended up commenting out everything in configure) section of
varnish.postinst, stopping varnish then running dpkg --configure.
Although I am certain this actually reproduce the issue.

Bug#611751: mon is not logging anything to syslog

2011-02-01 Thread Allan Wind
Package: mon
Version: 1.2.0-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

I recently noticed that mon no longer generates any syslog output. This
renders it useless to me as I alert based on those syslog events. When
printing out $@ after the eval in syslog() I found it complained about
modifying @_, and s// returns if the replacement succeeds opposed to the

Bug#611772: STATEDIR should probably be /var/lib/mon and stop should send a SIGHUP

2011-02-01 Thread Allan Wind
Package: mon
Version: 1.2.0-1
Severity: minor

mon can store state data on shutdown and retrieve those again when it
starts-up.  /etc/default/mon contins STATEDIR=/usr/lib/mon/state.d
however this directory is not writeable. It might might make sense to
default it to /var/lib/mon instead. In order to give mon a chance
to write state information on shutdown either call save_state via the
API or send it a SIGHUB prior to SIGTERM.

permissions of the linked file.

It complains about the private key yet the permissions in the above and the

In any case the actual problem, I think, is that the public key should not

 That was a bit unusual path.

# echo 'aptitude::UI::Minibuf-Prompts true;'  .aptitude/config

(You now get an error message about ~Abad query)

(You now get the same error message about ~Abad query, or in other words
last search was not cleared)

   (at a quick check, the minibuf prompt for limits appears to work, but
there might be something I'm overlooking)

In case there is more to it here is my entire config:

Without the suppress I could not use the tablet under etch (X11 7.1) and
with it I could not really use it under lenny (X11 7.3, wacom_drv

Wacom driver cannot maintain the same baseline behavior across upgrades
then I suggest the Debian package either remove the Suppress option from
xorg.conf and/or generate a warning about it.

Bug#513992: xserver-xorg-input-wacom: Option Suppress 0 causes latency and unreliable clicks

2009-02-02 Thread Allan Wind
Package: xserver-xorg-input-wacom
Version: 0.7.9.3-2
Severity: normal

When upgrading from etch to lenny with the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

...
Section InputDevice
Identifier Wacom Cursor
Driver wacom
Option Device /dev/ttyS0
Option Speed 4
Option Suppress 0
Option Type cursor
EndSection
...

I found that mouse clicks were registering intermittently (3/4), but
improved if clicking really deliberately (holding the mouse key down).
Double click rarely worked (1/10). This was verified by running xev
where no events were being generated on some clicks yet the indicator
light on the wacom device would show a click. The press events also
seemed to show noticeable latency when the mouse click was registering.

Compiling the latest upstream version of the wacom driver (0.8.2-2) did
not make any difference. USB mouse worked fine.

In order to restore normal operation I had to remove the Suppress
option. The Suppress option was required in the past, but I have not
noticed any downsides when removing it now so it appears to be a good
work-around.

Bug#513781: iceweasel: -new-tab steals window focus

2009-01-31 Thread Allan Wind
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0.5-1
Severity: normal

I just upgraded from etch to lenny and noticed that iceweasel now steals
the window focus when invoked with -new-tab. The work-around suggested
here:

http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubufox/+bug/272171
browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground: true

does indeed stop the browser from stealing the window focus, but it also
has the undesired effect of openings tabs in the background instead of
foreground.

I am used xfce and neither Activate focus stealing prevention or
Honor the standard ICCCM focus hint made any difference (on or off).

Bug#459764: mysql-server: mysqld fails to stop and start after upgrade (5.0.32-7etch3 - 5.0.32-7etch4)

I resolved this by resetting the debian-sys-maint password:

mysql -u root -p mysql

were $password is the one listed in /etc/mysql/debian.cnf.

 That's the problem. Did you modify the password of the debian-sys-maint
 user or the file /etc/mysql/debian.cnf in the past?

No, although I did have a password commented out in /etc/mysql/my.cnf:

...
#password = ...
password = ...
...

and neither of them worked.

 Starting mysqld manually and setting a new password for the mentioned
 user (which you have to set in /etc/mysql/debian.cnf as well) should fix
 this problem.

It did.

 I'm quite sure it's not related to the security update, something else
 much have gone wrong on your system.

The log provided shows the server starting up and shutting down just
fine prior to the upgrade. Here's the aptitude log with the timestamp

This was not a production machine, so the only loss was the time to

Bug#445915: feh --thumbnails and --full-screen does not work together

2007-10-08 Thread Allan Wind
Package: feh
Version: 1.3.4-2
Severity: normal

I am trying to get feh to display ~1.5k images using the --thumbnails
mode with the images that do not fit off-screen, and when I click on an
image I would like that image displayed zoomed (in/out) to fill the
entire screen.

If I use --full-screen (-F) or --geometry 1920x1200 then the thumbnails
window is forced into full screen which results in thumbnails that are a
few pixels wide. Setting --thumb-height 64 --thumb-width 64 makes no
difference, nor does setting --screen-clip 1.

The (imperfect) work-around is to press v after you click on an image.
This sets full screen mode, but only for the image window and not the
one contained the thumbnails.

2007-05-23 Thread Allan Wind

I have pam-ssh configured as my sole authentication source. I found

functionality does not work. Not sure if the environment variable is

Bug#422532: xorg.conf: Option Speed does not work

2007-05-06 Thread Allan Wind
Package: xserver-xorg-input-wacom
Version: 0.7.4.1-5
Severity: important

I have the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (among other things):

Section InputDevice
Driver wacom
Identifier Wacom Cursor
Option BaudRate 19200
Option Device /dev/ttyS0
#Option HistorySize 200
Option Mode Relative
Option Speed 4
Option SendCoreEvents true

The speed option is how you set sensitive of the tablet, and in my case I need
it 4 times after than normal for comfortable use. With this version of the
driver x-movement becomes erraticly fast, and the y-movement does not change.

As a work-around I downloaded linuxwacom-0.7.6-4 and replaced the drive with

Bug#422453: libpam-ssh: Leaks information when configured as sole auth module

2007-05-05 Thread Allan Wind
Package: libpam-ssh
Version: 1.91.0-9.1
Severity: important

If you replace pam_unix.so with pam_ssh.so as the module for
authenticating users, say, /etc/pam.d/common-auth contains only:

auth required pam_ssh.so keyfiles=id_dsa

then login will say Login incorrect when user does not exist, and the
following is logged to syslog:

May  5 23:28:10 [EMAIL PROTECTED] login[14755]: FAILED LOGIN (1) on 'tty1'
FOR `UNKNOWN', Permission denied

Login should behave the same if the user exist or not as not to leak
information.

If you stack this module after pam_unix but still authenticate against
your ssh keys, then pam_unix will generate a false event indicating that
authentication failed.

Bug#422454: libpam-ssh: Option to set login prompt

2007-05-05 Thread Allan Wind

If this module prompts for a password then it uses SSH passphrase:,

pam_unix.so, so the end-user do not get a different prompt based on the
back-end authentication source.

dbmode=multi, while the sarge version (that I elected not to use) comes
with dbmode=single.

The work-around used here was: `indexer -Ddrop; indexer -Dcreate;
indexer` resolved it pretty quickly.

Bug#405963: aptitude: Interactive search/limit should erase last query by default

2007-01-07 Thread Allan Wind
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-2
Severity: wishlist

I use the search and limit functionality of aptitude a lot, and wanted
you to consider to change the functionality slightly as follows. When
you invoke search the 2nd time have two states based on the first
character. (1) If it looks like a query then erase the previous buffer,
insert the character and continue in insert mode at end of buffer. And
as now (2) if the character is navigational (arrow keys), or backspace
then go into edit mode and reuse the last query with said changes to the
buffer.

mutt works as described in the above, and I found (1) to be normal use
case in both applications.

Bug#405970: aptitude: Empty group not saved

2007-01-07 Thread Allan Wind
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-2
Severity: minor

If you clear (ctrl-k) the package Options | UI Options | The default grouping
method for package views the selection does not survive a restart of
aptitude. I think it causes the option to not be written to
.aptitude/config rather than be written with a value. And the
restart detects the missing value and populates the default value
filter(missing),task,status,section(subdir,passthrough),section(topdir).

If modify .aptitude/config and set:

aptitude::UI::Default-Grouping

it works as expected.

Bug#389405: mutt: Content-Disposition cannot be changed

2006-09-25 Thread Allan Wind
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.9-2sarge2
Severity: wishlist

I frequently compose messages via resend-message (^E) from my collection of
sent messages. One of these messages have a Content-Disposition of attachment
(for some odd reason), and mutt remembers the Content-Disposition but does not
allow me to easily change it. I have edit_headers set and it does not show
even with:

ignore *
unignore from to reply-to cc date x-bogosity content-disposition subject
hdr_order from to reply-to cc date x-bogosity content-disposition subject
[...]
set edit_headers

Adding the header manually is ignored. edit-headers (E) in the compose menu
does not show it to me.

The only work-arounds that I found is via an edit (e) of the raw message. So
you either send the message to yourself and edit (e) it, or postpone (P) then
navigate to the postponed ($postponed) message where you edit (e) it. Finally
in both case you can do the resend-message (^E) to send the message.

I have used mutt for years, and this is the first time that I needed this so
obviously this is low on the priority list. It should be possible using the
normal header stuff (IMHO). It's somewhat related to #199709 in that you do
not see this attachemtn problem as a mutt user.

The only 3 valid options are nothing, checked (minized) and

Bug#356317: xsltproc: partial processing if input document contains DOCTYPE or xmlns

2006-03-10 Thread Allan Wind
Package: xsltproc
Version: 1.1.12-8
Severity: normal

The first part of a stricly xhtml document would look like this:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd;
html xmlns=http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml; xml:lang=en lang=en
...

however if I then use that against the following stylesheet:

xsl:stylesheet version=1.0 xmlns:xsl=http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform;

xsl:output method=html/

!-- identity translation --
xsl:template match=node()|@*
xsl:copy
xsl:apply-templates select=node()|@*/
/xsl:copy
/xsl:template

xsl:template match=/html
xxx
/xsl:template
/xsl:stylesheet

then only the identity translation occurs, and not the /html match (the exact
match does not seem to matter, they are not used). If the DOCTYPE line and
xmlns attribute is removed, then the stylesheet works as expected. sabcmd
(sablotron) behaves the same (incorrect) way with the xmlns attribute is
included (but works fine with the DOCTYPE line).

2005-08-23 Thread Allan Wind
Package: mozilla-firefox

After the security upgrade clicking on the Display your books icon to bring
up the bookmark sidebar cause the browser to crash every time.

The Bookmarks menu item works fine.

I tried to move the .mozilla directory aside before starting firefox after a
crash, however it still crashed (after adding the icon back to the toolbar).

You add the icon by right clicking on toolbar (say the home icon), then select
customize. Drag the book looking thing to the toolbar. I have not changed my
extensions, but currently have Live Headers 0.10 installed from Debian and
these downloaded out of band:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ egrep 'em:(name|version)'
.mozilla/firefox/*/extensions/Extensions.rdf
   em:version=0.2.1
   em:name=Locate in Bookmark Folders
   em:version=0.5.2.039

   em:name=Cookie Button
   em:version=1.2.0
   em:name=OpenBook
   em:version=0.5.9.6

I tried to disable my extensions to make it as vanilla as possible, however
doing so crashed the browser. After that just selecting the Tools | Extensions
menu causes a crash.

Bug#308276: cupsys-driver-gimpprint: Should ijsgimpprint be recommended?

That could be, but that was the only way I could get it working.

 You can use ijsgimpprint with the CUPS system. Printing looks like
 this (oversimplified somewhat!):

 cups - foomatic - gs - ijsgimpprint

 Printing with cupsys-driver-gimpprint is like this:

 cups - rastertoprinter

 (rastertoprinter is the gimp-print driver name). This is the easy
 option, which I highly recommend (I don't fully understand all the
 foomatic stuff either!).

 The driver you want should be under EPSON:
 Epson Stylus Photo 2200 - CUPS+Gimp-Print v4.2.7 (en)

With that I get a cancelled job and the associated error message is:

Unable to convert file 0 to printable format for job 27!

Replacing gs-gpl with gs-eps made no difference when I tried this
earlier.

 There's a setup guide in the gimpprint-doc package which you might
 find useful.

I only found it marginally useful when I read it a couple of days ago.
Configuration is easy, it's getting it working that is the hard part.

Anyways, unrelated to the issue that I filed.

 There is a missing dependency here, but it's not in this package.
 What is the output of `dpkg --get-selections | grep foomatic`?
 It should be added as a Depends or Recommends to whichever package
 makes

  Epson Stylus Photo 2200 Foomatic/gimp-print-ijs.

 available to CUPS.

foomatic-bininstall
foomatic-db install
foomatic-db-engine  install
foomatic-db-hpijs   install
foomatic-filtersinstall

either foomatic-bin or foomatic-db-engine I would think, but I suppose it could
also be foomatic-filters-ppds.

May  8 23:33:31 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cupsd[19058]: StartJob() id = 7, file = 0/1
May 8 23:33:31 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cupsd[19058]: Unable to convert file 0 to
printable format for job 7!
May 8 23:33:31 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cupsd[19058]: Hint: Do you have ESP
Ghostscript installed?
May  8 23:33:31 [EMAIL PROTECTED] cupsd[19058]: CancelJob: id = 7

So I just purged all cups, ijs and foomatic related packages and reinstalled
only the cupsys, cupsys-bsd, cupsys-client, and cupsys-driver-gimpprint
packages along with their dependencies. Configured it as before and it just
worked :-)

Bug#308276: cupsys-driver-gimpprint: Should ijsgimpprint be recommended?

2005-05-08 Thread Allan Wind
Package: cupsys-driver-gimpprint
Version: 4.2.7-10
Severity: normal

I think a depency on ijsgimpprint is in order (not sure which is
appropiate). At least, I could not get my Epson printer working
till I installed the package.

Bug#281831: lvm2: opendir errors at boot

2005-03-16 Thread Allan Wind
I do not recall seeing this with 2.6.10, however it is an issue with
2.6.11.3. Can we raise the severity? It stops the boot process
(and asks for the root password or ^D).
