Bug#961424: Mouse clicks not registering in terminal and some function keys don't work

Having trouble using the mouse when running mc in a terminal (the ones
accessed with Ctrl+Alt+F*, not emulators). It seems that I can only select
areas of the screen and paste them (LMB for selecting and copying, RMB for
pasting in the command line), and as such I cannot select files, click on
functions, or access the menu bar at the top. This wasn't the case before.
This has started happening once I connected through SFTP to a device and
that connection went stale, forcing me to kill the mc process. I don't seem
to be having this issue on terminal emulators within DEs.
I also seem to be having issues with function keys between F1 and F5, when
pressing them, they don't seem to register.

Bug#953573: file-roller: Error when starting file-roller

2020-03-10 Thread Andoru
Package: file-roller
Version: 3.36.0-1

For a week now I've been unable to start file-roller. There have been a few
upgrades in the last few days, but this error persists.
Here's what I get when I start file-roller from the terminal:

> $ file-roller
> file-roller: symbol lookup error: file-roller: undefined symbol:
> archive_write_add_filter_zstd

This error seems to be related to libarchive, but I wasn't sure if I should
report this against it, or file-roller.

Bug#917519: Unable to open subsequent YouTube videos when not starting a new session

2018-12-27 Thread Andoru
Package: vlc
Version: 3.0.5-1
Severity: normal

I started noticing issues with playing YouTube videos through VLC as soon
as I upgraded to version 3.0.4-4. When trying to play multiple YouTube
videos, one after the other, VLC throws in an error saying it's unable to
open the link.
This happens as follows:
Open new VLC session -> Paste in a video URL -> Plays video -> The video
ends -> Paste in another video URL -> Error -> Paste the same video URL, or
another one -> Error -> Rinse & Repeat -> Error

This however doesn't happen if I enqueue the video URLs, for example:
Open new VLC session -> Paste in a video URL -> Pauses video playback after
it starts -> Paste in a video URL (or multiple ones), and hit 'Enqueue'
instead of Play -> Resumes playback -> Video ends -> Plays next video
without errors

Another thing that curiously doesn't trigger the error is if:
Open new VLC session -> Paste in a video URL -> Plays video -> Stops the
video before it finishes -> Hit play again, making VLC replay the same video

Hopefully my explanation makes sense.
Not sure if this is an issue only at my end, or a proper bug.

Here's what's displayed in the error window:

> Your input can't be opened:
> VLC is unable to open the MRL 'https://www.youtube.com
> /watch?v=PBFPJ3_6ZWs'. Check the log for details.

Here's the verbose log from the "Messages" window:

As always, I forgot about this bug.

Looking at this again, now with the latest version on Sid, I can confirm
that the fullscreen issue has been fixed at my end.

On the other hand, the issue with VLC annoyingly positioning itself where
it shouldn't still persists.
I've also noticed that this also happens with lxpanel, so it's not a tint2
specific issue.

This sounds more like an Qt / tint2 interaction issue. Do you have similar
> issues with outher Qt based applications?

I did have an issue like this with qBittorrent a few years back, but that I
could fix by using OBApps.
For some reason, OBApps can't detect the VLC window, so I'm unable to make
rules for it...
Other than that, I use 4-5 other Qt apps, and I'm not having any issues
like the one with VLC.

AFAIK yes, this has been fixed. Will check again to make sure, and will
reply in case it hasn't been fixed.

Bug#891273: VLC positions itself under tint2 and always plays videos fullscreen

2018-02-23 Thread Andoru
Package: vlc
Version: 3.0.0-1
Severity: normal

Ever since the beta versions of VLC appeared in Sid, I've been having this
issue where after playing a video, VLC's main window keeps getting pushed
behind tint2 (I have it set to show up at the top of the screen) and gets
slightly off-screen. Here's a screenshot to demonstrate what I
mean:https://i.imgur.com/Z6E8kp5.png (I apologise if linking to imgur
for
screenshots is frown upon here)
This makes it impossible for me to access VLC's menu, and also makes me
unable to move the window, except if I press Alt+Space and choose "Move"
from the drop-down menu.

Also, when I play a video, no matter what size it has, VLC always plays it
fullscreen, even when having that option disabled under Video in the
settings.

Bug#881715: alsa-utils: High CPU usage on the default device

2017-12-13 Thread Andoru
Okay, so I installed Arch from scratch with a minimalist set-up of OpenBox
and tint2, installed alsa-utils and alsa-tools, and made that modprobe
config file to disable HDMI output, just like I did when I did the
netinstall of Debian. Then installed vlc and played all the files I played
previously (in FLAC, ogg, mp3, etc), and both when using the default device
and when selecting Analog Front Speakers subdevice, the CPU usage rarely
passes the 5% mark. I've also tried foobar2000 through wine, and got the
same result.

Here's some info about the alsa-utils package under Arch:

$ pacman -Qi alsa-utils

So this makes it pretty clear that I wasn't talking out of my ass, and that
there's something fishy going on with Debian's implementation of ALSA, or
there was something fixed between versions 1.1.3 and 1.1.5.

Yes, I was about to do that. Though those distros all have PulseAudio by
default, so I thought of installing Arch on a separate partition and test
ALSA there.

Forgot to mention this: just because I'm the only one to report this issue
doesn't mean I'm the only one to experience it! I'm sure at least other
Debian users with the same sound chip as mine would probably experience the
same issue, if not users of other distros as well. They probably just
didn't bother reporting it as it is a sort of a minor-ish issue, or they
might've not even noticed it.

Could you (or someone else) perhaps let me know who provided the driver for
ALC887-VD? Maybe that way I could contact them directly.

What is there else that you'd like to know? What is it that I should be
doing to diagnose this? That's what I've been asking for the entirety of
this bug report!

I pretty much doubt it since I haven't got any useful info from you, nor
did I get any replies on alsa-users/alsa-dev.

Yes, I mentioned in the first post that I created a rule under
/etc/modprobe.d/ to disable HDMI audio output through the integrated chips.
But you added another reply so you probably noticed that I wrote that
afterwards.

> A clean install of

It *does* work, however, not as it should.

No, I meant specific commands to test those CLI players with the default
ALSA device (that has that issue with high CPU usage). Or at least to give
some output with which we could have a clue what's causing the CPU usage.

> Remove /etc/modprobe.d/intel-disable-hdmi.conf and try again.

I did, and unsurprisingly it did not help, the same high CPU usage on the
default device, the specific subdevice monopolises the sound card, and on
top of that, most applications that don't offer any settings for setting
which audio card/device/subdevice to use are left without sound because
they automatically choose the first card, which is the HDMI output.

Bug#881715: alsa-utils: High CPU usage on the default device

2017-11-28 Thread Andoru
Forgot to check previously, but whenever I use those CLI players you
suggested, they also monopolise the soundcard, making me unable to play
other stuff in parallel, just like how it would happen when setting the
specific subdevice in VLC. So, since I'm not able to use those CLI players
to play with the default device to see if they use the same amount of CPU
as VLC and other players/apps, this issue is still not solved.
That's why I asked you for specific commands that I can use with those CLI
players.

Call me technologically illiterate, or say that I don't know of the inner

I started VLC through OpenBox's menus, and on that menu the command to
start VLC is simply 'vlc', which probably translates to 'bash -c vlc'. If I
open a media file from the file manager, and there's no running instance of
VLC, I get "/usr/bin/vlc --started-from-file" as the command name under
htop.

Have you actually tried it on a ALC887-VD or a similar integrated chip by
Realtek?

I did not get it through Debian, I simply installed it in the default Wine
prefix.

I apologise, I think I did not mention this in the initial bug report, but
I'm not using PA, nor do I have it installed. That's why I submitted this
bug against ALSA.

Let me know if you need any additional info.

Also, in the initial report, I forgot to mention that when I select "Analog
Front Speakers" subdevice in VLC, with some decoders (particularly APE) and
when the sample rate is below 44100Hz, I can hear some distortion
(crackling on high pitched sounds), so I'm guessing the high CPU usage is
maybe due to an inefficient resampler?

Bug#881715: alsa-utils:

2017-11-14 Thread Andoru
Package: alsa-utils
Version: 1:7.7+16
Severity: normal

As the title says, I'm having a bit of an issue with ALSA, and the high
CPU (~15-20%) usage in some cases. So far on the default device, I've
only noticed this with VLC and foobar2000 (through Wine), but there are
other apps/games that might have the same problem. It's just easy to
tell if an app/ALSA uses too much CPU if you just play some audio files
and you don't have anything else that might need the extra CPU power,
like rendering the video stream or render the graphics. I can fix the
high CPU usage in VLC if I switch the audio sub-device from the Default
to a specific one (in my case: Analog Front Speakers). There is no
change in the audio quality, but the resources used instantly decrease.
The only problem with this is that I can no longer play/hear any audio
from other apps/games (so basically VLC monopolises the card). Also,
this is not possible under Wine, so I can't achieve the same thing for
foobar2000, or other Windows apps/games.
I haven't made any custom
config files for ALSA, except to disable the HDMI audio output (so that
the normal analogue output is used by default in all apps/games), and
I've done that in /etc/modprobe.d/intel-disable-hdmi.conf with this as
it's content:

___

options snd_hda_intel enable=0,1
___

The soundcard that I'm using is an integrated one, and it's a Realtek ALC887-VD.
Does anyone know what I could do to fix this issue, while still being able to
play multiple streams of audio at the same time?

Bug#864880: Drag and drop fails at times in Wine and some Qt applications

2017-06-16 Thread Andoru
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.7+19
Severity: normal

First of all, sorry if I'm reporting this against the wrong package.
Looking on Wikipedia, XDND was listed as a component of X11.
After asking on /r/linuxquestions on reddit (
https://reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/6hi5ig/does_anyone_know_what_componentlibrary_interfaces/)
someone answered saying that XDND is responsible for drag and drop actions.

I've been having this issue for a few months now, and I kept waiting in
case an update might fix this issue, but it seems that's not the case.
What happens is that most of the times when drag files or objects into Wine
apps (like foobar2000 for example), also noticed this happening in Qt apps
(MKVToolNix as an example), either nothing happens (the cursor doesn't
change and the files aren't opened by the target application, or in the
case of foobar2000, sometimes the window underneath it gets "picked" as the
target.

To explain further what I mean by what I said above, when I drag files from
Thunar (and other file managers as well, I have tried both nemo and
SpaceFM) to (or over if you prefer) foobar2000, the cursor turns into the
one used for copying files, and instead of picking foobar2000 as the target
app, instead Thunar gets picked, causing the files I selected to be copied
wherever I dragged the files.

This seemingly happens at random, as sometimes foobar2000 correctly gets
picked as the target app.

At first I thought this might be an issue with Wine, but after experiencing
this native apps too, and trying WineHQ's development builds, I realised
this bug happens at a "lower level". Other apps might be affected as well,
but I haven't tested in depth.

Hope my explanations make sense. If not, feel free to ask me for more
details.

Bug#864602: Double free or corruption error/segfault when trying to restore files from a specific partition

2017-06-11 Thread Andoru
Package: extundelete
Version: 0.2.4-1
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

I've tried to restore files from a specific partition (ext4), which worked
previously (did this a couple of months ago), but now it seems that I can
only get it to exit with this:
> *** Error in `extundelete': double free or corruption (!prev):
0x01a95000 ***

I've tried recovering from other partitions on the same system (also ext4),
and they work as expected...
At first, since I attempted this from a LMDE 2 Live CD session, I thought
it might be a bug in the specific package that was available, but then I
switched to Ubuntu and to Arch LiveCDs (here's the arch package page:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/extundelete/), and they
both gave me the same results, except that at times it segfaults instead of
returning the above error.
Here's the command I used:
> $ sudo extundelete --restore-directory /user/bin/storage /dev/sdb1

Also used the --restore-all and --restore-file, and both gave me the same
result.

So after all of this I gather that the problem is with the partition I'm
trying to recover specifically, and that this is a upstream issue.
Now I know that I should've written this to the package maintainers, but
their mailing list seems dead for quite a while, and I thought you as
maintainers might have a more direct way to contact the developers.
Regardless, I will try to post this bug on their mailing list too.

Here's the superblock info of the partition in case it helps:

Bug#820128: vlc: Hardware decode issues/Video stops after a few seconds

2016-04-05 Thread Andoru
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.2-5
Severity: normal

I've previously posted this issue on the VideoLAN forums, but since I
didn't get any answers there, I'll try to submit this as a bug report,
since I'm not aware of anything that I might've done to cause this.

So here's the post for more details:

https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13=131509

Also I noticed that there's another person who has the same issue as me
with the video not being stretched in full-screen, or when changing the
aspect ratio: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=819453 (bug
#819453)

Would've done that, but I wouldn't have wanted to be shunned for asking an
oft-asked question, since you said this issue was answered multiple times
before.

Exactly how do you think I got to post on alsa's bug report and alsa-user
mailing lists?
I asked a completely different question by the way.

Don't have an ~/.asoundrc, so I'll assume I have to do that to
/etc/asound.conf

> $ cat < $HOME/.asoundrc
> defaults.pcm.!card PCH
> defaults.ctl.!card PCH
> EOF

That's exactly the same as configuartion #2 that I've tried, and which
didn't work... Read my initial message in this bug report, please.
But I gave it a spin this time again, in case I messed up something last
time (and I did, just not with ALSA).

>
> As root:
>
> # service alsa-utils restart

That gives me:
Failed to restart alsa-utils.service: Unit alsa-utils.service is masked.

So I used this instead:

# /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

Which unfortunately didn't seem to change anything, so probably the command
I issued didn't work.
But after restarting, the sound was the same, but I found out what was
causing all these issues:
In VLC I've set up a custom device for audio output instead of "Default",
and that seemed to hold the sound blocked to one app. After changing it
back to "Default", everything works as expected (multiple sound sources,
browser add-ons sounds work, WebM/HTML5 players have sound)

This can be now closed as it's no longer a bug. The message about missing
files led me to think that the ALSA package I got was broken, thus the bug
report.

If I don't set up dmix in the config file, it doesn't work either way.

multiple times in the past.

Did they disable search engine indexing on those lists? I wasn't able to
find much useful info for ALSA and this specific issue while searching.
Also no posts over on those mailing lists turned up...

> A good start is just to throw away all the asoud.conf and .asoundrc
stuff. It overconstrains your system. The latest alsa is very tough and
should do what you need.

If I do that, I get no sound through the analog jack output. What probably
happens is that the HDMI is used for sound output instead... Somebody at
the ALSA user mailing list suggested me to use config #2 (from my first
message in this bug report) just to set the default soundcard without
setting dmix, but it didn't work...

Bug#814757: alsa-base: dmix/software mixing doesn't work

2016-02-14 Thread Andoru
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.27+1
Severity: normal

So I've been trying to fix this problem for a while now, but I can't seem
to set up ALSA in a way to enable multiple sound sources at once (2 or more
apps/programs to use the soundcard simultaneously). Despite having a dmix
entry in /etc/asound.conf, it still refuses to work the way I intend it to.
And speaking of which, here's how my asound.conf looked like:

_

pcm.!default {
type hw
card PCH
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card PCH
}

pcm.dsp {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmix"
}

defaults.pcm.rate_converter "speexrate_medium"

And here's what 'aplay -l' gives me:

 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD
Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

As you probably guessed, I'm using an integrated soundcard (that's on a
Intel B85 chipset), and I've set it to use the jack plug output instead of
the HDMI one.

Another issue that I'm having is that the sounds/music/etc that are
supposed to be outputted by Firefox, don't get played at all (like for
example add-ons that notify me when I get an e-mail, or HTML5 audio and/or
video players, or other such stuff). Curiously the flash player seems to be
unaffected by this issue, probably because it's stand-alone to the browser
itself.

Before attempting to submit this bug request, I tried asking for help on
the alsa user mailing list (
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.user/39409), and out of that I
tried those asound.conf configurations:

#1:

pcm.PCH {
  type asym
  playback.pcm {
type plug
slave {
  pcm {
type dmix
ipc_key 9175930
ipc_key_add_uid true
slave {
  pcm "hw:PCH"
}
  }
  }
  }
  capture.pcm "hw:PCH"
}

Which doesn't change anything, still can't use multiple sound sources, and
the FF issue isn't fixed. 'aplay', however works, and plays files nicely.
If I pass it the -Dplug:dmix parameter, it gives me an error (see below)

#2:

defaults.pcm.card PCH
defaults.ctl.card PCH

This one causes sound to no longer work, and none of the soundcards
get listed at all, either in the mixer, or in 'aplay -l'

#3:

pcm.!default {
 type plug
 slave.pcm "dmix"
}
ctl.!default {
 type hw
 card 1
}

_

Which again, unfortunately doesn't fix anything, but instead whether I use
aplay stand-alone, or with '-Dplug:dmix', I get this same message:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1029:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:722: audio open error: No such file or directory

Which leads me to think this might be a bug, as the package I got might be
missing components. I apologise in advance in case this is actually not a
bug, but rather a configuration issue. All I remember is that I didn't have
this much trouble setting up dmix on any other previous PCs I owned.
Also, just in case someone might suggest a PulseAudio fix, I'm not using
it. Just straight-up ALSA.

Bug#813435: vlc: No longer shows the video title when playing YouTube videos

2016-02-01 Thread Andoru
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-5+b3
Severity: normal

So up until a few versions ago, VLC would nicely display the name of each
video that was currently playing, but for a few weeks now, all that is
displayed in the title bar is '#e62117'

Is this known upstream or is it a Debian-specific bug?

Bug#805574:

2016-01-31 Thread Andoru
I'm having the same issue when trying to rename files. I have yet to
encounter such crash when using the batch renamer, but when renaming
individual files, Thunar randomly crashes on me every 4 or 5 rename
attempts.
If I could help with anything in debugging this, please let me know!

Bug#802886:

2015-10-24 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
I'm having the exact same issue as Tareeq, and it started happening ever
since I updated the QT5 libraries, so it must be an issue with it.
Here's a log for playing a YouTube video: http://pastebin.com/6vwaha9k

I tried resizing the output a few times, so that's why so many
"VoutDisplayEvent 'resize' " show up there.

Bug#802886:

2015-10-24 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
> except that in my case I see only about 20x200 pixels, i.e. almost not at
all.

I think the size of the video that's shown is random each time you play
something or resize the window. I tried for example to go from windowed to
fullscreen (by manually clicking the menu option under "Video"), it
suddenly displayed more of the video. I also noticed that when opening
different videos, or even the same video, the size of the video shown
varies.

> I played with output in video section without success.

I forgot to mention earlier that as a temporary fix, you can untick the
"Integrate video in interface" option under "Interface" in VLC's preference
(simple view), that should enable you to see the videos and switch to
fullscreen by double-clicking.

Bug#791620: vlc: Window decoration issues with the QT5 interface

2015-07-06 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-2+b1

___

First of all, I apologise in advance if this issue is not related to VLC,
but instead it belongs to QT5 or the WM/display drivers, but so far VLC is
the only QT5 application that I noticed those issues surface to.

The issue: VLC loses it's window decorations, and is made unmovable being
stuck on the upper-left corner of the screen (screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/tGZCzqb.png) after restoring VLC from it's minimised
state. Also even though I might have a window in the background while VLC
is in front, I cannot interact with that background window unless I switch
them manually (Alt+F4 or Super+D as I set them in the WM). This seems to
happen randomly, and is not conditioned on some previous event (starting a
certain app, opening a certain window, etc.) that I know of.

What's worse is that file logging doesn't work properly here for some
reason, so I wouldn't be able to diagnose what exactly is happening. Though
there's something that shows up in ~/.xsession-errors:
http://pastebin.com/aiECtN0N

About my current configuration: As you might have noticed, I'm using tint2,
the WM is OpenBox and I'm on a device with Intel graphics, so I'm using the
open-source drivers (i915)

Bug#772503: vlc: CRC errors in FLAC files, not occurring in other players

2015-04-12 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Could you let us now the bug number so we can track it?

It's #9966 and #9863, but they're both closed and fixed. So I think I
should really report the bug there as you suggested earlier.
Will leave the bug number in here after I've done that.

2015-04-10 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Then I think it'd be best to contact upstream about it. Could you please
follow
https://wiki.videolan.org/Report_bugs to report the bug upstream?

I did, and it was already reported, so I'm guessing they're working on it.

After I accidentally clicked both mouse buttons (LMB and RMB), I get an
assertion failed message prompting me either to continue using the program
or to stop it. Seems there's no difference if I loaded any soundfile or
not. Also doesn't happen in menus and option windows. Here's the backtrace

Bug#491557:

2015-01-04 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: audacity
Version: 2.0.6-2
Severity: normal

Don't have anything of use to add to this bug report but I'm having the
same issues, I hear a loud pop when I open Audacity, although granted it
happens randomly (so not every time I start Audacity)
Sometimes this is also comes along with a ALSA daemon failed or something
along those lines. (I forgot the error message)

I also get a pop occasionally when I play a sound file. It seems to happen
the most when I previously stopped the playback in a loud portion of a
file, and then play again at a random position.

Bug#774181: audacity: Always appends the .aiff extension when exporting to WAV

2014-12-29 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: audacity
Version: 2.0.6-2
Severity: normal

For some time now I've been having issues with the Export feature. Every
time I want to export a project to a WAV file, it appends .aiff as
extension to whatever filename Audacity constructed. This gets especially
annoying when I forget to remove the extension, and click on Export
directly, and then the pop-up window asks me if I really want to save the
file with the .aiff extension.
Don't know what caused it to behave this way but I know for certain that it
doesn't do this under Windows.

2014-12-07 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: vlc

Not sure if this is indeed a bug but I'm getting some curious CRC errors
with this FLAC file (and two more from the same album) made by me:
https://mega.co.nz/#!jZdgWKLQ!4-3MD6Uvgy8tAGZQ6rNBq6YZKrSLoHx-N-Ke8bWwWcQ
It occurs around 0:41-0:42

Log:

The file seems to be playing flawlessly in other media players such as

Bug#765830: vlc: Cannot select just one channel in Stereo Mode

2014-11-23 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
I confirm that it is solved in 2.2.0~rc2-1
Thanks to all that have participated to fix this issue and also sorry again
for posting the same issue twice :P

Bug#769071: Cannot seek/skip in YouTube (possibly HTTP too) streams.

2014-11-23 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.0~rc2-1
Severity: normal

This issue still persists in 2.2.0~rc2-1

Also tested on VLC 2.1.5 (stable) on Windows, and seeking works fine in all
mainstream YouTube formats (webm+mp4, 360p, 720p, 1080p - the last one
got it through keepvid).

Bug#769739:

2014-11-18 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
I suppose this is fixed by 7529f9c0c3d4418a1bc0af2640ce24c450f0e9b1
[1]. Could try if this changes fixes the issue for you?

 Cheers

Thanks for the answer, but unfortunately no, after applying what was
changed according to the diff to the local file (don't know how to
view/download individual files in VLC's own GIT implementation) and
restarted VLC, nothing changed, except the lua errors point out earlier in
the bug report don't show up anymore.

Here's the full log:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=14243586289186258847

Also tried to send another message to this bug report, but for some reason
it wasn't accepted, here's what I wanted to add last time:

Strangely the webm format still plays properly with VLC 2.1.5 (stable) on
Windows. Can't check under Debian as I have no way of getting binaries for
that specific version. If it would be useful/required to test 2.1.5 on
Debian, in the end I could compile it.

Bug#769739: vlc: Can't play videos in webm format on YouTube

2014-11-15 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.0~rc1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Since updating to 2.2.0~rc1-1, I cannot play any videos in the webm format
on YouTube, getting this in the message window (verbosity 1):
__
lua info: youtube.lua: debug: parse(): js_url before //
s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/html5player-ro_RO-vflJ1gY7_/html5player.js

lua info: youtube.lua: debug: parse(): js_url fixed (added http:)
http://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/html5player-ro_RO-vflJ1gY7_/html5player.js

lua error: youtube.lua: pick_url(): Couldn't locate video signature,
YouTube won't work without it.

core info: stopping playback

Playing any video on the mp4 formats seems to work just fine (except on
music videos or heavily copyrighted stuff of the sort which is expected
not to work)

I also have another similar problem (
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=769071) with all YouTube
videos and this notice was posted in regards to youtube.lua:
http://jslover.secsrv.net/VLC/playlist/youtube.lua

Could this issue be related to YouTube screwing things up?

Bug#769071: Cannot seek/skip in YouTube (possibly HTTP too) streams.

2014-11-11 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.0~rc1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I updated to the latest vlc version on unstable (2.2.0~rc1-1) and
afterwards I played a YouTube video (will leave some sample YouTube URLs
below), and I tried skipping to a certain part of the video but it doesn't
jump to it. Instead the time counter runs off counting from where I
skipped, but there is no video or audio (I'm left with the last streamed
frame on the screen).
Seeking/skipping locally stored video files works fine.

Sample videos:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=8bJIJwimSbk
https://youtube.com/watch?v=krXBaxD2BrI
https://youtube.com/watch?v=UAA-9S8MJn4
https://youtube.com/watch?v=HNxnRqLskXo
https://youtube.com/watch?v=DWefOzTZ268
https://youtube.com/watch?v=h6D4MMWjrmM

It seems that no particular format works when seeking with VLC at all, so
it's not just an issue mp4 videos as in the previous bug that I submitted.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Cleared the plugin cache (there was none)

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Nothing changed as expected.

Here's what errors I get into stdout:

Bug#769143: vlc: Cannot select left/right channel in Stereo Mode

2014-11-11 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.0~rc1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

This has been happening even in the 2.1.X stable versions of VLC.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Going into Audio - Stereo Mode - Left/Right

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Choosing any of those two doesn't do anything, VLC still plays both
channels regardless.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

To have either the left or the right channel to be duplicated, and the
other to be discarded.

2014-10-18 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
It's not just you. I'm getting the same error when trying to adjust the
gain on a project with multiple tracks.

By the just me question, I meant the way the buttons show up in the Crash
Recovery window after I re-open Audacity. :)
Screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/vqvG63d.png

Does the failed assertion error show up if you only open a single-track
project?
Here it happened on both a single and multiple track project, stereo and
mono tracks as well.

__

Also, I need to correct a phrase I wrote above, it didn't make much sense,
I'll put the correction between asterisks:

This leaves me unable to click on anything, as the clicks aren't registered
by the OS, *however* the cursor works fine (I can move it around).
If I try to select Continue on that window * (using the keyboard) *, I am
finally able to click, but *after getting rid of that window, * no matter
what I click in Audacity, be it a menu, button or a widget, the error shows
up again* and if I select the Continue button, Audacity crashes with a
segfault.:

thanks a lot for the bug report! :-)

You're very welcome, it's the least I could do to help FOSS gain more
popularity :D

If you want to help, you can compile the example I submitted in the
upstream report and confirm the problem there, so at least the status can
upgrade from new to confirmed. Maybe that makes it receive a little
more attention.

By example I assume you mean the attached patch. I'll try to compile it
later today. Should I use the source of the same version I currently have
installed (through debian's own sources), or should I use a specific
version from somewhere?

upstream report =?

2014-10-17 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: audacity
Version: 2.0.6-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I've opened an audio file in Audacity today, and wanted to adjust the
panning to a track and it immediately popped up a window saying An
ssertion failed!, after which this was layed out:

../src/common/wincmn.cpp(3271): assert
!wxMouseCapture::IsInCaptureStack(this) failed in CaptureMouse():
Recapturing the mouse in the same window?

Here's a screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/9tBvG58.png

This leaves me unable to click on anything, as the clicks aren't registered
by the OS, the cursor works fine however (I can move it around).
If I try to select Continue on that window, I am finally able to click,
but no matter what I click in Audacity, it causes it to pop up that window,
and if I select the Continue button, Audacity crashes with a segfault.

Here's the backtrace dump:

Sorry for the late reply, but indeed it fixed the problem for me as well.

Does anyone know where was this issue fixed? Was it a bug in the debian
packages or was it upstream? Just out of curiosity :)

2014-09-29 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Okay, now I've tried to play a 320p stream in webm and mp4 from YouTube
(can't link to those as those links I get in keepvid.com expire after some
time, so you'll have to use that tool yourselves), and the webm one streams
smoothly while the mp4 one at times stops to buffer. I've looked at the
codec details of each file to check if perhaps the mp4 file has a larger
bit rate, but it's not even that case (~340kBps for webm compared to
~330kBps for mp4), so indeed it might be related to that bug you mentioned.

Thanks. I can confirm the issue.

It looks a lot like #7186 in vlc's trac to me. At least I see the
same problem with the stream mentioned there.

That bug seems to be over 2 years old.
What are the next steps that I should take?

2014-09-27 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Thank you for checking. I'm reopening the bug report and adjusting the
versions accordingly.

Thanks for reopening the bug too :)

Is there a publicly accessible stream somewhere that we can use to debug
the issue?

Yes there is, but at the moment I only have YouTube videos, as I forgot
where I previously watched HD content outside of YT. If those are not
satisfactory, I could host them on my webspace, but it's too slow to stream
those videos (just ~150kBps download)
So for the YouTube videos that I've tried now:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=4JMMlgVipnc - Log: http://pastebin.com/JHsYrebM
- Loads slowly and stops constantly to catch up, hence the buffering
messages.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=HCq59HQRtC8 - Log: http://pastebin.com/uV11PNw7
- Works fine for a few seconds, then stops and after a few seconds the
stream gets dropped.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=OhobMdqM3yk - Log: http://pastebin.com/0SimDcU8
- Just like above.

___

Here are also some videos that I uploaded and encoded, they all have 10FPS
and apparently VLC's HTTP streamer can keep up with it:

Bug#762377: vlc: Videos over HTTP stream very slowly in 2.2.0-pre3

2014-09-21 Thread Andoru Ekkusu
Package: vlc
Version: 1:2.2.0~pre3-dmo2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

x What led up to the situation?

After upgrading/updating Debian's VLC packages last week, I noticed that
VLC no
longer plays streamed videos (over HTTP), and the connection is dropped
after a
few seconds on any HD stream, which did not happen with the previous
versions
(2.1.3-2.1.5)
The specific feature that I use to access HTTP streams is under File -
Open
Network Stream or by pasting the video URL from the clipboard.

x What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?

At first I thought it was an issue only with videos on YouTube (since that's
where I watch most of the streamed videos), but I've tested out HD streams
from
multiple sites/servers and the same happens.

For more details and for the log that VLC outputs during streaming (and
dropping the connection) I previously posted a thread on VideoLan Forums
(where
I didn't get any answer). Here's the thread:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13t=121661

And here's the transcript from the thread:

After I updated VLC to the latest version on the unstable repos in Debian,
I cannot watch YouTube videos anymore as they keep stuttering and loading
very slowly (this mostly happens when watching HD videos, this didn't
happen before I upgraded though), to a point where the connection drops.
HTTP streaming might be affected by this too. Here's how the log looks:

--
core debug: net: connecting to r14---sn-c0q7ln7y.googlevideo.com port 80
core debug: connection succeeded (socket = 13)
http debug: protocol 'HTTP' answer code 206
http debug: Content-Type: video/mp4
http debug: stream size=80906441,pos=1250884,remaining=7967
http debug: this frame size=7967
http debug: Connection: close
http debug: Server: gvs 1.0
http debug: trying to seek to 1093302
core debug: net: connecting to r14---sn-c0q7ln7y.googlevideo.com port 80
core debug: connection succeeded (socket = 13)
http debug: protocol 'HTTP' answer code 206
http debug: Content-Type: video/mp4
http debug: stream size=80906441,pos=1093302,remaining=79813139
http debug: this frame size=79813139
http debug: Connection: close
http debug: Server: gvs 1.0
-

It keeps repeating the same messages and floods the log window, which
didn't happen before when streaming (yes, it was set to Verbosity level 2)
. Also the CPU usage is unusual, takes up 20-30% extra per CPU.

Bug#741554:

2014-03-27 Thread Andoru
Thanks for replying, however I doubt the soundcard is damaged, I had
similar bugs under Ubuntu a few years back and afterwards moved back to
Windows, and the card works properly there. Just to make sure I looked at
the card and it seemed to be properly plugged in, I tried to push it a
little bit more but it didn't move.
The sound itself works, just that unexpectedly this error flows into
streams when listening to music. So far it hasn't happened when watching
videos (yes, the audio was turned on) and no applications so far have
caused me this error except the above example with DosBox + MUNT and other
midi interpreters/players.

You haven't given any explanation as to why you're closing this bug report,
you don't know whether it is truly a bug or what's actually going on, and I
don't know what info to give more to troubleshoot this issue I'm having.
Please reopen the bug, and let others help by properly troubleshooting my
issue or give a better explanation why you closed this bug report.
Don't go ahead and close bugs just because you feel they're solved.
Actually you haven't even given me a resolution to begin with.

I'm not using a mailer, I'm sending those messages right from my mail
client so there's nothing to check.

And I repeat in case you forgot:
I'm NOT using Pulse Audio, all that you saw when I listed the installed
packages with pulse in their names are simply *DUMMY packages* to prevent
programs from requiring Pulse Audio, and prevent things like SDL compiling
against it. There's nothing to set up in Pulse, only in ALSA.

Also if I were to follow your logic, it would mean that the minute I play
something through this soundcard, it should shoot a jet of errors the like
I gave earlier in this bug report, but that doesn't happen. I'll remind you
(once) again:
Sound WORKS fine for an undetermined period of time (ranges from 5 minutes
of playing music to 2 hours so far), right after which this error pops up
in multiple rows, I hear repetitively the last sample played, and the whole
OS/PC becomes UNRESPONSIVE.

By how many times this has happened by now I'd also appreciate a way to
shutdown ALSA so I could use the PC again. I tried both
$ alsa force unload

and

$ sudo invoke-rc.d alsa-utils stop

Both which show the ALSA has stopped, but the annoying repetitive sounds
don't stop and the system is still struggling with 100% CPU load.

2014-03-20 Thread Andoru
Today I run into another ugly bug that rendered the PC useless.
It happened right after trying to run a game under DosBox using MUNT
(DosBox = enviroment emulator for old MS-DOS software, MUNT = sound module
synthetizer emulator)
The error (again it flowed continously flooding the terminal window from
where I started DosBox) was:
ALSA-lib pcm.c:7843:(snd_pcm_recover), underrun occured
Might be related to an issue in MUNT's own qt-interfaced player. Whenever I
play something after 5 seconds it stops and reports:
snd_pcm_writei failed: Broken pipe
ALSA audio: Processing thread stopped

Bug#741554:

2014-03-18 Thread Andoru
Hmm, you must be thoughtful to notice a system event which causes
your bug. I can't help at this stage as there are no similar bugs
 reported in the net.

There is a comprehensive howto at
 http://www.johannes-bauer.com/linux/dolby/

 Maybe it helps?

Whoops, I just realised that I haven't replied to this last time, sorry.

I haven't noticed anything peculiar happening right when the audio goes
berserk. I'm not sure how to look at system events in real time in case it
hiccups again, nor what log to look at after this has happened. I've tried
to look at everything under /var/log/ to see if something turned out, but
found nothing in regards to alsa.
Also that link offered no help to me :(
I don't use (and don't have) and optical cable or DTS hardware, just plain
'ol headphones through line-out.

librcc0 0.2.12 is still uploaded to sid. moc should work flawless
now.

Nope, still gives me a segfault when installing again (after
updating/upgrading) with apt-get. Seems I have librcc 0.2.9-3.1+b1

 What tells:
 $ dpkg -l | grep puls

How did you try to start alsamixer?

$ dpkg -l | grep puls
hi libpulse0 1.0
 all Pulse Audio dummy package
hi pulseaudio 1.0
 all Pulse Audio dummy package
ii vlc-plugin-pulse 2.1.2-2+b1
i386 PulseAudio plugin for VLC

I started alsamixer by just typing 'alsamixer' in the terminal as I
remember doing last time.

Are you running a midi device?

Nope.

Bug#741554:

2014-03-18 Thread Andoru
You can install librcc0 from sid with no doubt.

$ apt-cache policy librcc0
librcc0:
  Installed: 0.2.9-3.1+b1
  Candidate: 0.2.9-3.1+b1
  Version table:
 *** 0.2.9-3.1+b1 0
500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ testing/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.2.9-3 0
500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy/main i386 Packages

You have just kept pulseaudio on hold. To really uninstall it run:

 # apt-get remove --purge libpulse0 pulseaudio

They're just dummy packages that prevent apps that require libpulse from
installing it. If I remove them further packages I install that depend or
suggest pulse will install it back.

After removing pulsaudio it should work ;-)

alsamixer worked after I installed the dummy packages so I'm not quite sure
about that.
Anything else that I could do to diagnose this weird issue?

Bug#741554:

2014-03-17 Thread Andoru
According to [0] it should help to switch the pcm in pulse?

 [0] http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=202t=57132

Nope, I also removed pulse yesterday (since I don't really need it anyway) to

try and see if it solves the problem, and it didn't, all it resulted is in
some breakage (no /etc/asound.conf, the speaker icon disappeared from the
notification bar, can't control the PCM volume, only Master). But anyway,

I'll have to discuss that on the distro's forums for solutions, even though
I didn't get any answers yet.

Yesterday (after removing pulse) I've watched videos all evening without a
single problem, but as of today I tried to listen to some music (under VLC

as cmus doesn't work after removing pulse) and the (alleged) bug resurfaced
again.

I tried to run aplay -v as that topic you linked suggests, but it returned
this:

ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '1'
ALSA lib conf.c:4248:(_snd_config_evaluate) function
snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings

ALSA lib conf.c:4248:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat
returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:4248:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer

ALSA lib conf.c:4727:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such file
or directory
ALSA lib pcm.c:2239:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
aplay: main:722: audio open error: No such file or directory

I guess there's an alsa configuration problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
Here's the guide I followed for removing pulse from the distro:
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=23930

Also, the videos were mostly from YouTube that I watch through VLC (as I don't
like the flash player for eating all the resources and skipping a lot of
frames as a consequence), so the sound stream is also 44100Hz same as the

music I listened to. (all of it was from CDDA)

Thanks for your reply Elimar,

 Try moc ;-)

Hehe, I did that now, but it reports Segmentation fault
I installed it through apt-get.

The default card should be card '0'

aplay -v ist only for cinematics ;-) Please post the output of

 # aplay -l
 # aplay -L
 # lsmod | grep snd

The output would be insteresting at a working _and_ a none working
 sound please∵

Thanks, I'll build moc myself after I fix my audio problems, and give it a try.

 - The output generated while sound is working.
 - The output generated while sound doesn't work.

The output of what? Also just to make sure I was clear: sound works all the
time, just that when the error occurs, sound hiccups and I get the long row

of errors and an unresponsive TTY7

Anyway, this all looks reasonable. You should be able to control
pcm amd master via alsamixer with no problems.

For some weird reason I can't even start alsamixer. I know very well it worked
after getting rid of pulse.

 What tells:
 # modinfo snd_mpu401_uart

 I don't have a CMI8738 card handy for testing.

Bug#741554: alsa-base: Invalid PCM pointer with CMI8738

2014-03-13 Thread Andoru
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.25+3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I've been having this problem on CrunchBang 11 Waldorf which is based off
Debian Wheezy (I think)
I've had to restart the PC 4 times because of this. Every time I try to listen
to something, at random points it hiccups (basically keeps repeating the last
few ms of what I was listening, probably what was on the buffer) and the whole
OS becomes unresponsive, CPU raises at around 95-100% at which point I can't do
anything but turn the PC off. The GUI (TTY7) becomes very unresponsive (for
example when I move a window from one place to another, it slowly creeps to the
destination. Also TTYs 1-6 are unusuable as they get flooded with this error:
[X.XX] cmipci: invalid PCM pointer: 0x
X = random number that keeps increasing.
I was mainly listening to music over VLC also tried cmus. On the 3rd and 4th
time after restarting I tried I changing the output module from pulse (knowing
it can be problematic at times) to alsa but that didn't fix anything.

   * What led up to the situation?

Nothing in particular, this has been happening since I installed the distro. It
even behaved this way in the LiveCD session.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I tried to add the unstable repositories in the hope that a more recent version
of ALSA might have fixed this bug but it was not the case.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

At first, since it took some time for the error/bug to show up, I thought
updating fixed everything, but after 1-2 hours of listening to music the
problem resurfaced.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Sound to work continiously without this error popping up and rendering my PC
completely unusuable.

I'm not sure if this is a debian-specific bug as I haven't exited the Debian-
sphere, but if this isn't related to Debian itself, please prompt me to send
this to ALSA instead.
Thank you in advance.
