Bug#669400: gnome: does not offer touchpad options on Eee PC X 101 H

2012-04-19 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: gnome

The dialogue accessible from the main menu via System → Preferences → Mouse
only offers
the tabs General and Accessibility but not the tab intended for netbooks etc.
like the Eee

Bug#573743: alsa-base: Microphone not usable on Eee PC X 101 H either

2012-04-19 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.23+dfsg-2
Severity: normal

All the mixers, like Alsa Mixer and Gnome Alsa Mixer, list Mic Boost for
playback but do
not offer the microphone for recording. BTW, I think the severity should be
bumped up as
the netbook can only be used for playback but not for making phonecalls or
recording
things using its (functioning) camera as long as the microphone is not working.

Bug#664461: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: Ethernet stops working after a short time

2012-03-17 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-41
Severity: normal

…especially under load. Restarting networking (via the Network Manager applet)
or
unplugging the ethernet cable do not help.

Moreover, the Hardware Monitor Gnome applet does not show any
visible bar for eth0 even though it correctly reports throughput, so it looks
as if the
driver reports the maximum possible throughput incorrectly.

Bug#596801: linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.5-686: keyboard touchpad io breaks when netbook LED switches on or off

2010-09-14 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-20~bpo50+1
Severity: important

There are 4 LEDs on the left side below the keyboard, 3 of which I can control
so they don't switch on or off: wifi (WLAN), caps lock, num lock. The fourth
one lights up when the battery
is being charged and is switched off when the charge is complete.

When an LED lights up or is switched off, all keyboard and touchpad input,
including the separate power button above the keyboard) becomes impossible.
Everything else is unaffected, so
the system can be shut down via ssh, bash and halt. But at the end of the
shutdown process it will not power off, the power LED at the power button
remains lit and the other LEDs stay as
they were. The computer still will not react to any input. The only way to
restart it is to remove both power sources: the mains transformer as well as
the battery. When power is resored,
the computer will boot if the power button is pressed, but the wifi (WLAN) LED
will be off even though it usually comes back on if it was on on shutdown. The
num lock and caps lock LEDs
will light up erratically a few times, then the system will boot normally. (So
it is advisable to turn the wifi LED on immediatly, so input won't be broken
again.)

It seems that the kernel's reaction to an LED state change causes the input
circuits to freeze, possibly by giving them some kind of wrong order.

There is a tendency for this to happen more markedly when someone is logged in
(gdm), but it (obviously) affects the command lines (F1 to F6) as well as
they become inaccessible.

Bug#526735: mplayer: 'dumpstream' should be switchable (on/off) while a stream is being played

2009-05-03 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc2-17+lenny3
Severity: wishlist

As with a good old tape recorder, I'd like to listen to Internet radio and
press 'record'
and 'stop'. Configuration should include:
- a buffer of configurable length so that if 'record' is pressed, the previous
10 seconds
or so are included in the recording
- the name of the file dumped should be configurable to contain the stream
designation and
the start and end time of the recording as well as possible ICY tags

BTW, I am using a script to listen to streams; I enclose it if anyone is
interested:
- the URL is first searched until a stream URL is found (using 'wget')
- some streams are interrupted from time to time; the script then restarts the
player
  example:
http://radio3.cbc.ca/nmcradio/webradio.m3u
= http://shoutcast1.cbcradio3.com/
ICY Info: StreamTitle='Jerry Leger - Warning
Sirens';StreamUrl='http://www.cbcradio3.com/';
(the latter is adapted to whatever is playing)
- the window title reflects what's going on
- audible signals mark the script's progress while looking for the correct URL
and while
restarting the player (so you know what's happening without looking at the
screen)

Bug#526736: mplayer: The duration of a file should be included in the output

2009-05-03 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc2-17+lenny3
Severity: wishlist

I use the following command to probe media files:

MPLAYER_VERBOSE=-6 mplayer -endpos 0 -msglevel
demux=4:header=-1:cplayer=4:decaudio=5:decvideo=5:all=-1 $FILENAME

This quickly gives an amazing amount of information --- but not the length of
the
recording contained in the file. How can I get this information without playing
the file
and looking at the on-screen display (OSD)?

It seems I was not quite successful in removing these packages before the

DVDs (all programmes), so it seems I have some wring libraries still installed.
I would
like to know how you can identify packages from outside sources

1. before taking any other steps
2. once you have commented out or removed the outside sources from
/etc/apt/sources.list
3. left polluting the system after the upgrade (my situation)

Bug#518092: mplayer: SDL driver running on the 1st head in a dual-head setup causes image disruption on the 2nd head

2009-03-03 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc2-17+lenny3
Severity: normal

The image is displayed without problems due to the acceleration being available
on the
first head but some of the frames get displayed on the second head in the same
resolution
so that the video can be seen there, too, albeit only in a flickering way. This
way, of
course, it is not possible to use the display on the second head because it is
constantly
disrupted.

BTW (another bug), this video driver makes the mouse pointer disappear on both
heads in
fullscreen mode, even the option -nograbpointer does not change that.

Bug#517126: apache2: PHP (5) support cannot be installed

2009-02-25 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: apache2.2-common
Version: 2.2.9-10+lenny2
Severity: important

Apache was upgraded during the move to Lenny. My previous installation had PHP
enabled,
after the upgrade PHP still worked but MySQL access through PHP did not. The
package
php4-mysql had been removed and could not be reinstalled. php5-mysql could
be
installed, but did not work as libapache-mod-php5 was not installed ---
libapache-mod-php4 still was. I removed the latter and then:

$ sudo apt-get install libapache-mod-php5
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libapache-mod-php5: Depends: apache-common (= 1.3.34) but it is not
installable
  Depends: php5-common (= 5.2.0-10+lenny1) but
5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny2 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Now PHP support is totally gone and this cannot be remedied:

$ sudo apt-get install libapache-mod-php4
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libapache-mod-php4 is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libapache-mod-php4 has no installation candidate

Great!

And I cannot even file a bug report against libapache-mod-php5:

$ reportbug libapache-mod-php5
*** Welcome to reportbug. Use ? for help at prompts. ***
Detected character set: us-ascii
Please change your locale if this is incorrect.

Using 'Axel K. Stammler a...@users.sourceforge.net' as your from address.
Getting status for libapache-mod-php5...
A package named libapache-mod-php5 does not appear to be installed; do you
want to search for a similar-looking filename in an installed
package [Y|n|q|?]?

Sorry for filing against Apache 2 but what else can I do?

I think they should have waited a little longer until Lenny really has become
stable:
Apache PHP does not work, Java has changed so much that my programs do not work
anymore
and G Numeric rejects so of the most importnat formulas. (Sorry for the flame
which does
not concern you but maybe you could tell me how to file a bug report against
the upgrade
to Lenny.)

Bug#516645: gnumeric: Some functions not working anymore

2009-02-22 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: gnumeric
Version: 1.8.3-5+lenny1
Severity: normal

The following formula used to calculate a more or less arbitrary number which
gave me a
hint which students of mine I had neglected (i.e. not graded) for a while. I
enter my
grades in columns for every student (= row) with the latest being on the left
(i.e. I
create a new column so that the older ones move to the right).

=if(Total!$A12=,,round((15.5-D12)*(match(FALSE,if(G12:DP12=),0)-0.5)))

At the heart of the formula is MATCH, which I need to find out how many columns
are blank
in a given row before the last grade can be found, i.e. for how many lessons I
have failed
to grade this student.

Note that the formula depends on IF returning a range if used on a range. The
resulting
range of FALSE and TRUE is then searched using MATCH. A simpler way would be
this similar
formula:

=match(FALSE,isblank(H14:R14),0)

Now, with the upgrade from Debian Etch to Lenny, both of these formulae only
return #N/A.

Package: default-jdk
Version: 1.5-30
Severity: important

This package's name sounds as if it would provide the default Debian Java

but that's exactly what the package doesn't do. In fact, I find it difficult to
use
aptitude search java or anything similar to find out which package to install
to be able
to do

java class

I have been using Debian as a programmer for many years but Java seems to be
hidden
somewhere.

Bug#512623: mysql: does not start (always crashes)

2009-01-22 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: mysql
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Starting mysql from the command line always results in Illegal Instruction,
then execution terminates (of course). The
parameters seem not to change anything. The situation is the same with
mysqldump. (I am trying to connect to a My SQL server
running on another machine in the local network. On that machine, incidentally,
everything runs without any such errors or
warnings.)

Bug#510846: pdmenu: Input fields (edit, setenv) should be editable using the arrow keys

2009-01-05 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: pdmenu
Version: 1.2.89
Severity: normal

I use the following command to create an input window filling an environment
variable
with its previous value as a default:

echo exec::edit,setenv:echo BASENAME=~Name:$BASENAME~;

Unfortunately if I only want to change one or two characters in the middle of
the
variable's value, I need to erase everything up to that point using the
backspace key from
the end of the line backwards. It would be wonderful to be able to use the
arrow keys to
move around and change individual characters.

Bug#503931: alpine: beeps for ages when losing connection

2008-10-29 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: alpine
Version: 0.99+dfsg-1~bpo40+1
Severity: normal

If Alpine is in an incoming mail folder and suddenly cannot access the server
anymore, it
displays a status message every 15s and asks if the connection should be broken
every 60s.
Unfortunately this happens rather often with the servers I use. So, if I write
a longer
reply or just keep Alpine open while doing something else, it often keeps
beeping every
60s.

So I set Suppress Status Message Beeping but Alpine contnues its awful noise
totally
unphased.

As I have never seen a connection reappear after 60s or more, I would even
prefer Alpine
to break the connection immediately and possibly re-open the folder. How do I
do that?

Bug#496313: openoffice.org: File opening dialogue does not always use current file's directory

2008-08-24 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 2.0.4.dfsg.2-7etch5
Severity: normal

The file opening dialogue should always start on the directory of the file
currently being
edited, so that parallel files can be opened. But it only does that if the
current file was
opened using this dialogue before. If Open Office was started with the file
name on the
command line, the directory used in the dialogue is the one used for the last
file saved or
opened in the previous session. This even applies if Open Office was started
with the full
file name including the full path to the file on the command line --- and is
very annoying
if you start Open Office through a file manager like the Midnight Commander to
edit a file
and then want to move on to another file in the same directory.

Bug#481109: yudit: please add options similar to Enscript, especially for the headers

2008-05-13 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: yudit
Version: 2.8.1-2
Severity: wishlist

The option I miss most: configuring the headers to show the modification time of
the file instead od the time it was printed (What is so interesting about that
anyway?)

enscript -b '\$% \$n (\$F \$T)'

And here are some more goodies I should love to see:

- do not show line feeds but show where a line was wrapped:
--mark-wrapped-lines=arrow
- switch to truncating lines instead of wrapping them in any way
- distinguish between landscape and seascape
- print multiple pages on one output page

Bug#480632: amule-daemon: Kad address (http://download.overnet2000.de/nodes.dat) invalid and cannot be changed

2008-05-11 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: amule-daemon
Version: 2.1.3-1
Severity: important

Kad did not start even though I had received a high ID on ED2K, so I tried to
download http://download.overnet2000.de/nodes.dat in my browser and received the
reply The requested URL /nodes.dat was not found on this server.

I then went through amulegui, amulecmd and the web interface (port 4711) but
could not change the address. Then I grepped ~/.aMule/* and
/etc/default/amule-daemon but could not find out where this address is stored.

I then tried downloading a nodes.dat file I found through a web search and
putting it into ~./aMule. This works with varying results. Sometimes Kad is
connected but most of the time it is either running but disconnected or not
running. Kad searches never give any results whatever the status. Of course,
after a few days Kad cannot connect to anything anymore because the file is out
of date.

Bug#405760: gdm: Same problem here when trying to switch from XDM to GDM but squares remain in Gnome - unusable

2008-05-03 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: gdm
Version: 2.16.4-1
Followup-For: Bug #405760

I installed GDM and Gnome c. and switched from XDM to GDM by running
'dpkg-reconfigure gdm' and setting GDM as default manager. After
crashing for a long time, GDM only showed squares. Earlier I had tried
Gnome with the same effect, so I just switched back to XDM. Seems I am
stuck with Fvwm :-(

Bug#261414: lyx: Dialogues like Find Replace or Document - Settings do not receive focus

2008-03-26 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: lyx
Version: 1.5.4-1~emiscabpo40+1
Followup-For: Bug #261414

These windows only receive the focus if they appear under the mouse
pointer by coincidence. If I switch windows they receive the focus but
(obviously) my mouse pointer gets moved. Then, when I am done e.g.
finding and replacing, I close the window using the Escape key (all
this works well), but the my mouse pointer has been moved outside the
main Lyx window, so it in turn does not have focus, forcing my to
switch back to it manually.

Very annoying if you need to use Find Replace or Table Settings etc.
more than once, so it is not a nice-to-have feature but an annoying
bug which has been around for very long.

Bug#471403: lyx: Insert - Float - Text Wrap Float does not work and is undocumented

2008-03-18 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: lyx
Version: 1.4.3-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The float just does not appear in the output (DVI or PS). This is
particularly annoying as this kind of flota is not mentioned in any of
the help documents, so you tend to insert many of these floats before
you notice something is wrong. BTW, there is no error message, either.

A workaround is provided by using the package wrapfig. Unfortunately
the caption will then always be marked as Senseless!, but it will be
printed and included in the list of figures correctly.

Bug#471302: tkping: geometry cannot be set

2008-03-17 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: tkping
Version: 1.1.1-2
Severity: normal

TK Ping's window size and location can neither be set using an option like
-geometry nor an X resource.

(I would like TK Ping to be a small (not high) but wide window at the
bottom of the screen, without a menu or the line at the bottom of the
window. It should only include the buttons.)

Bug#469738: xserver-xorg: Sometimes takes all CPU, interrupts other programs or crashes

2008-03-06 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-19
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

I use a two-head setup, and it was very difficult to get Xorg
configured. Sometimes an update will make it unusable, so I always
back up xorg.conf before each update (this helps). If I have to
restart Xorg or XDM, Xorg sometimes shuts down after a while, so I
have to shutdown the system and reset it so the video card gets reset.

Sometimes unrelated programs like GKRELLM or X Screensaver
make Xorg take 90% of the CPU time. This usually happens every 30
minutes, so I have created a script which will kill and restart
GKRELLM in such a case. This usually helps. At other times Xorg will
take all available CPU time and still just show a blank screen so that
the system has to be rebooted.

I often get the feeling that the communication with the video card is
less than optimal although it is not a newly-released card. Programs
like XAWTV complain about missing accelerations although the card has
them. Xine and M Player sometimes just show a black window; VLC runs
but with high CPU usage and not smoothly, although my video card
should actually not require that much CPU use.

The automatic start of X Screensaver interrupts everything including
communication with the IDE DVD writer so that the writing process
fails and the DVD cannot be used. This happens with simple blanking of
the screen as well as with regular screensaver plug-ins.

I have tried all configuration variations, not only with Xorg but with
X Screensaver, VLC and all CD/DVD burning software; nothing seems to
help. The video card seems alright, there is enough RAM, I have
optimised IDE access...

Bug#458313: lyx: pressing Page Up in a document with unsaved recent changes sometimes crashes Lyx

2007-12-30 Thread Axel K. Stammler
Package: lyx
Version: 1.4.3-3
Severity: normal

This usually happens in documents which are not too small (I think).
Unfortunately the bug cannot be reproduced reliably --- but it happens
rather often nonetheless. Lyx just disappeares completely without
warning. If the document had not been used before the session (i.e.
had not been used in the penultimate session) it is not even listed
under Recent Files and has to be found again (very annoying).
Sometimes a recovery is indicated, but that is the end of it.
Everything works perfectly after that --- until it happens again.

I use Xorg with Fvwm 2:
