This is not pair programming. In pair programming the two programmers
are supposed to discuss what they're doing and learn from each other.
This is just a way to generate boilerplate with subtle bugs and
possible licensing issues.

It mitigates the risk but I'm not sure it will stop people sending us
bug reports about the driver when it turns out not to work for them.

This driver is still experimental and it doesn't bind to any devices by
default. We probably won't enable it until that changes.

Bug#1081751: RM: linux-signed-i386 -- ROM; no longer built from linux

2024-09-14 Thread Ben Hutchings
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-ker...@lists.debian.org
User: ftp.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: remove

The linux-signed-i386 source package was previously generated from
linux via the signing service. This is no longer being done, and
linux-signed-i386 hasn't been updated for ¬9 months. There is no plan
to reverse this; in fact we will soon remove all the i386 kernel
packages.

Please remove linux-signed-i386.

Ben.

Bug#1081700: dcut: incorrect set of “Supported commands” in ‘dcut’ help output

2024-09-13 Thread Ben Finney
Package: dput
Version: 1.2.2
Severity: minor

The help output from ‘dcut --help’ lists “Supported commands”:

$ dcut --help
Usage: dcut [options] [host] command [, command]
[…]
 Supported commands: mv, rm

That set of commands is inaccurate. As documented by the FTP-master team
https://salsa.debian.org/ftp-team/dak/-/raw/master/tools/debianqueued-0.9/Queue.README>
the correct set of supported commands is:

cancel
reschedule
rm

The ‘dcut --help’ output should accurately report this set of commands.

The i915 and xe drivers are separate. The xe driver is still
experimental and we don't enable it.

Please test the latest unstable version (6.10.9-1) to see whether this
has been fixed.

If not, please report the bug upstream, following
<https://drm.pages.freedesktop.org/intel-docs/how-to-file-i915-bugs.html>.
We don't patch the i915 driver or drm core, so it should be OK to do so
even though you are running a distribution kernel.

Let us know the upstream bug URL so we can track it.

Ben.

It is trivial for us to add support for additional architectures once
they are minimally supported in upstream Linux (we may also require
that dpkg recognises their triplet; I'm not sure). There is no
requirement that we define a kernel configuration for the architecture
at the same time, or ever (see x32).

Can we assume that new Debian Linux ports will be able to satisfy that
or would that be a problem sometimes?

Bug#1081356: Configuration changes for linux-6.1 in bullseye-security

2024-09-10 Thread Ben Hutchings
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-...@lists.debian.org

As with earlier releases that had LTS, I'm trying to add a backported
kernel version to bullseye-security now that bullseye-backports is
closed.

This will need some configuration changes in dak and the signing
service:

- dak should allow source-only uploads of linux-6.1 and
linux-signed-6.1-{amd64,arm64,i386} even when they will go into the
  NEW queue.

- The signing service should be configured to process source package
linux-6.1. (And it no longer needs to process linux-5.10.)

Ben.

- The Ethernet driver in question is sky2, which hasn't changed between
  these versions.
- There are 4 boots logged with the new kernel version, and in 1 case
the "No irq handler for vector" error appears.
- There are 2 boots logged with the old kernel version, and in both
cases the "No irq handler for vector" error appears.
- In all boots the Ethernet link is reported as up soon after boot,
though it's sometimes a bit wobbly (with both old and new version).

So I'm not convinced that there's a regression here.

This is annoyingly difficult to get right, as older kernel release
strings with an ABI number that needs to be stripped off while newer
kernel release strings with no ABI number but may have a number at the
start of the flavour. Having said that, I don't see us ever having an
ABI number as high as 686 so that could be special-cased.

Until this is fixed you can use the -f option to explicitly specify the
flavour to build.

Bug#1065416: Bastian's offer in #1065416

2024-09-08 Thread Ben Hutchings
Hello Stefano, Matthias, Andreas, and other committee members,

I apologise for taking so long to respond to this issue. I missed the
beginning of it as I did not have much time for Debian in February and
March this year. I've been aware of it in recent months it but until
today I had not gone back and read through the full conversation.

My answers below are mine alone. I have not discussed this with other
team members and do not speak for them.

Since the Linux UAPI headers originate with Linux upstream, I think it
makes most sense for the linux source package to remain the primary
source for them in Debian. If I understand correctly, no-one has
claimed that linux-libc-dev is causing problems other than through the
disputed Provides field.

I also don't see any convincing reason why linux-libc-dev and linux-
libc-dev-*-cross cannot continue to be built by different source
packages. I recognise that there is some duplication that could be
avoided by building them together and having the -cross packages
contain only symlinks, but in my experience of cross-building for
embedded systems an extra few megabytes on the build system is in the
noise.

Kind regards,
Ben.
